“WELL SUPPORTED” AND “SUCCESSFUL”: PHOTOS AND REPORTS OF THE VILLAGE FETE By our reporter, Paul Muggeridge.

The fete was well supported. The weather was mixed (some sun and some showers) but this did not put people off.. The Arena shows were well received with great performances by the Horsham Bluebelles Majorettes and by the Mystery Guests who were a Rock choir. I can attest that the cakes were very good from the WI tents: I bought mine from the Bombshells as the other WI group had more or less sold out)! Another successful fete, well done to the Gala Association!

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows This month the rainbows have been completing activities towards their Explore Skills Builder. They have taken their teddies travelling around the world and learnt how to keep warm when outdoors. The guides joined one of our meetings to complete an A-Z challenge.

2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides This month the guides have been litter picking in the community, played rounders on the common, held a ready, steady, cook evening with interesting results and started to our county’s 40th anniversary challenge. Our waiting list for Rainbows and Brownies continues to grow at an alarming rate. If you can spare an hour or 2 a week or are willing to help behind the scenes we would love to hear from you. What a great day out we had at Fontwell races, celebrating our Federation’s Centenary. Apart from the lovely food and the thrill of the horses thundering past the post right behind us, some of us even won some money - not enough to get excited about but better than losing! Next on our agenda was the South of England Show. I’ve said before, we may only be a small WI (some have hundreds of members) but we certainly have some very talented ladies who bake, sew, flower arrange, paint, craft and write so we regularly submit entries and equally regularly, we bring home rosettes. If you went to Ardingly, I hope you stopped by the WI marquee for a cuppa and a slice of cake (all made by members). And if you also checked out the amazing entries from WIs across the region, you may have seen our entry (left), which gained us a rosette. We also got a couple of Certificates of Commendation and once again our very talented artist Maureen (that’s her top row on the left at our recent art class) was awarded yet another rosette for this beautiful painting. We’re now concentrating on the Village Fete and heading to our kitchens and gardens so that you’ll have lots of wonderful things to buy. More on that next time… Meanwhile, don’t forget to go and see the ‘Ocean Bombed’ bandstand in the Carfax on 6 July. All done to highlight the scandalous amount of plastic in our oceans. You don’t need any skills to share in the fun and friendship that WI has to offer so if you’d like to join us, you’ll be made very welcome. For more information, our contact details are on the back cover or come along to St John’s Hall on the second Tuesday of each month at 2.30.

Did you come to see us at the Village Fete last month? Many of you did because we sold out of our delicious home-bakes made by our members, as did our afternoon WI ladies. There’s obviously something people love about a WI cake!

As well as selling our cakes and biscuits, we also ran a free to enter competition for a bottle of champagne and to keep the little ones quiet we had cake decorating and puzzles. The fete seemed to be a huge success, well done to the Gala Committee, they did a sterling job! The West Sussex Federation WI (WSFWI) recently held a photography competition. All winners will have their photographs featured in the 2020 WSFWI calendar. I am delighted and very proud to announce that Debz, our Treasurer and leader of our photography club, submitted 2 of the winning entries! Both photos were taken locally in our beautiful surrounding countryside. They are titled ‘Lazy Days on the Canal’ Way and Arun at Loxwood and ‘Autumn Thoughts’ Warnham Deer Park. Huge congratulations to Debz!!

For our August meeting it’s wine (or your favourite tipple) & nibbles at the ready and brains into gear for our popular, fun quiz night. It’s a good excuse, not that we ever need one, for a chin-wag, lots of laughing and hopefully showing off our extensive general knowledge… or, probably a truer reflection, learning rather a lot! The Broadbridge Bombshells have been running for just over a year now, so we thought we’d ask for some feedback from our members on what they have enjoyed. The comments were so positive and rewarding to read… “Meeting as a group and catching up with friends” “Quiz nights – fun and light hearted” “Crafts although I’m not very good at it” “Trying new things that are outside of my comfort zone” “Socialising” “An evening out with others that varies each month”. It can be difficult to walk into a room of people you don’t know, but you will always receive a very warm welcome with us! Why not come along and see us, your first 2 meetings are free! Last Tuesday of the month, 8pm. Check out our website and Facebook page for details of meetings. BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club Close season is a quiet time for players but not so for the clubs committee members with lots of preparation to do before we start all over again with our first senior league match scheduled for Saturday 3rd August with an FA Cup match 7-days later. In recent weeks members have been busy furnishing the internal changing rooms in the new pavilion with benches and hooks, these were scavenged from the old Leisure Centre, the metal brackets were modified and repainted in the club colours and the wood was stripped down and re-varnished, the end result looks mighty impressive. Members attention has now turned to furnishing the bar area and here too we're using a lot of reclaimed material, with the oak bar-top coming from the former Rudgwick Social Club and stainless steel shelving retrieved from the old Leisure Centre. The club passed the FA Ground Grading inspection on the 23rd August although we are not yet clear to play matches as work has not yet finished on the pitch and the inspectors will need to return before the start of the season to check on the pitch and goal posts before we get the green light to start playing matches. Before then of course we have to take ownership of the facilities and we still don't have a date on when that will be. Countryside have given us special permission to do some of the work inside the pavilion but there are still concerns about the condition of all three pitches, a concern I'm sorry to say we raised in this magazine 12 months ago and with less than seven weeks to go now before our first match we are all beginning to get nervous that is won't be ready in time.

If you could spare some time on the regular basis to help run the club, then we'll be pleased to hear from you. CRICKET Some people might remember that last month I said that the weather had so far enabled us to play all our games and we were having to hose the square. Well, that’s all changed in June as it was too wet to play our most recent home match and now we can’t get on the ground because of the water. Every year I get a summer weather forecast from a local friend who follows flora, fauna, etc and he is generally pretty accurate. Earlier this year he told me that there would be “some periods of very hot and dry and some of wet and cool.” He’s pretty accurate so far ! On the field of play, both sides have had mixed fortunes. The first XI were the first team this season to beat Crawley Eagles IIs with Abhishek Chaudhary 56* and then in the next match they were bowled out for 79 by Steyning IIs. In the T20 Trophy, we 8

beat Southwater (Doni James 83*) and then lost to Roffey II, both opposition clubs being above our own league status. Suffice to say that the 1st XI performances are a bit like that earlier summer weather forecast and if it continues it’s going to be a tough run to the end of the season. The 2nd XI too have had fluctuating results but veteran and captain Ian Stocker has again been leading from the front with wickets and runs. Our upcoming home league fixtures for are as follows: 22nd June – 2nd XI v West Chiltington III 29th June – 1st XI v Findon II 6th July – 1st XI v Clymping I 13th July – 2nd XI v Steyning III 20th July – 1st XI v Goring II Off the field, the Club have just held a very successful Quiz Night and hopefully, by the time you read this, you will have seen our stall at the Village Fete. Then, on the 7th July, it’s our annual President’s match where members old and new get together on what is usually a warm, sunny day – so plan a family BBQ with confidence. Finally, I did not receive any ideas about controlling the increasing rabbit population which is doing its best to dig up the Top Common and devour the crops in the neighbouring fields. So, as the new buzzard population are having little impact from the air, we are looking to have a go on the ground with some local ferrets. Updates to follow.. Colin Case STOOLBALL

Parish Point of View John Bailey. Lay Reader St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Call me frivolous, but I was more amused than shocked to hear a senior government minister confess to a serious indiscretion in his past—one for which, by his own admission, he could have gone to prison. It remains to be seen whether a lapse of judgement twenty years ago will dash his hopes of being the next Prime Minister—by the time this issue of BBH Mag hits your doormat we will know more. However, it’s surprising what public figures seem to get away with these days. And I suspect that many people around the country – whatever they think of him or his politics – will have a degree of sympathy. The fact is that most of us have at least one indiscretion in our past—something that would be embarrassing or even get us into trouble if it came to light. Scripture is pretty unsentimental about human nature. It recognises that we each face a constant barrage of temptation: an impulse to put our own interests first, to cover up our mistakes, to get our own back on those who we feel have wronged us. And, however much we try to be good people (and most of us really do try), we repeatedly lose the battle of wills with our own dark side. It follows that all of us, at some point, will earnestly wish we had acted differently in the past. The tragedy, of course, is that we can’t change the past. Neither can we can change who and what we are. But the good news, and a key part of the Christian message, is that we can be changed. It takes something bigger than our selves – something outside our selves – to do it, but that inner transformation is on offer to each and every one of us. Countless people down the centuries have discovered in Jesus the power to heal those memories of guilt and failure. Such transformation is not cheap. It does not simply anaesthetise. Rather, it shines the light of understanding and acceptance on9 which we can build a freer and happier future. Whether our leaders have learned from their admitted mistakes is a matter for their individual consciences. For the rest of us, it’s my prayer that we will each find release from our “if-onlies”. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. ———————————

MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

When did you last review your investments? Now the summer holidays are here, you may have a little more time to review your investments Investing isn’t something you can do once and then forget about. Once you’ve chosen a fund to invest in, it’s important to keep it under review. Even if a fund was a top performer when you chose it, it may not maintain that performance in the future. What can we do about this? Personally, I try to select funds with a proven track record (ideally at least 3-5 years) and a good Crown rating. What are Crown ratings? Reviewed twice a year, the ratings consider three key measurements to derive a fund’s performance: alpha, volatility and consistently strong performance. The top 10% of funds are awarded five FE Crowns, the next 15% four Crowns and each of the remaining three quartiles given three, two and one Crown(s) respectively. We frequently review existing investments for clients and often see funds whose rating has fallen since it was first invested. When a rating falls, this should raise questions in the investor’s mind, but you may not know this has happened. I believe that the lesson to learn here is the importance of reviewing holdings regularly, and ensuring that any investment is invested over a range of sectors and funds. Then if things go wrong you aren’t so exposed to any one fund. The information in this article is for information only and must not be considered as financial advice. We always recommend that you seek independent financial advice before making any financial decisions. Karen MacDonald is an independent financial adviser with Monetary Solutions Limited.
