As we begin to move cautiously back to some sort of normality, we are now revisiting last year's programme to look at the things we weren't able to do and see whether we can start to do some of them now. A few of us have already spent a lovely afternoon sketching in the Garden of Remembrance at St Mary’s Church while others took part in the Federation Quiz.

INSPIRING WOMEN

In July every year we have a garden party and this year is no exception. The big difference though, was the challenge of making it plastic free. The WI want to raise awareness of the overuse of ‘Single Use’ plastics, and their effect on our environment and climate change, so the Public Affairs Committee and the Climate Change Ambassadors held a ‘Single Use Plastic Free’ picnic in Chichester and invited local WIs to hold their own single use plastic free picnic as part of the WI plastics campaign. The aim was to try to make it as single use plastic free as possible. Well, Broadbridge Heath WI is always up for a challenge, so we decided to go one better and make it completely plastic free. No easy task. Look how many products are wrapped or packaged in some sort of plastic! Jam and butter, homemade scones and use of proper crockery and cutlery were easy but the clotted cream proved more difficult. After a bit of research we found that our local farm shop could supply it. So I took my largest dish down to the farm to have it filled with fresh clotted cream - just like my granny used to do! In fact it felt much more special without having all that ‘litter’ around. Many of you will be soon be getting together with family and friends, and maybe having barbecues or picnics. How about having a go at making them plastic free? I’m not saying it’s easy, but it’s definitely worth it. The more we refuse to buy things wrapped in plastic, the sooner suppliers will have to find environmentally friendly alternatives. Let’s get back to paper bags and glass bottles……… We are really looking forward to meeting up again properly and having lots of fun. If you’d like to join us, you’ll be made very welcome. BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com CRICKET PRACTICE NETS STILL EVERY TUESDAY EVENING Well, we got through the wet and cold May, I can put away my umpire’s thermal vest and jumper and we can at last enjoy the warmth of summer. However, the 1st XI did drive all the way to Bognor on the 22nd May for a proverbial 6 pointer only for it to hose down on arrival and the game cancelled. Unfortunately, the improved weather since has not helped the 1st XI as it’s played 6, lost four, rained-off two so far this season. So, that puts us down at the bottom of our division with the two teams down there with us the two that were rained-off. Still, despite inconsistent availability (the bane of most sports clubs these days) we have been going well in most games (except Rustington) and just need someone to do what the opposition always seem to have – someone who gets 50+. However, Tom Hughes has continued to look good and go well so it just needs him to get a few more ! Alex Round too is shaping into a good all-rounder. For the 2nd XI it is a much different story as they are unbeaten and third top in their division behind Rudgwick, who it’s good to see back playing local league cricket. In their last two games, the 2nd XI have only needed four batsmen to pass the opposition score with John Barnett 66no against local rivals Barns Green III’s and Chairman Tim Wells being not out in both matches – 42 and 48. With bowling, Mark Greaves-Lord took 4-34 against Barns Green and Carl Brewster 4-23 against Roffey IVs. Our home fixtures for the next few weeks are: Saturday 19th June – 1st XI v Crawley Eagles IIs Saturday 26th June – 2nd XI v Rudgwick Thursday 1st July – Sussex Slam v Slinfold (T20) Sunday 4th July – Club XI v President’s XI Saturday 10th July – 1st XI v Rustington Development of the club’s facilities continues with the arrival of a new storage container to replace the previous leaky one. That’s sure to ensure another dry spell. Like the football club, we are also always looking for volunteers to help, especially with ground maintenance. So, if you fancy a go with boys’ toys like sitting on a roller for half an hour or driving our new gang mower on a Friday afternoon, getting a tan in the sunshine and fresh air, then let us know. As ever, don’t forget, if you are a new cricketer to the village or used to play and fancy giving it another go, come along any Tuesday evening and give it a go. Alternatively, give Ian Stocker a call on 07570800795. He’d still love to hear from you. Colin Case 5

STOOLBALL Broadbridge Heath Ladies Stoolball Team is running this year, all a little rusty from no play in 2020. This year, to get the teams back into the swing of the game The Chanctonbury League have decided to make this season just friendly games, this gives our clubs time to recruit new players in a non-competitive environment, so NOW is the time ladies of all ages to dust of those trainers and come down to Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club on a Friday evening 6.30pm to 8pm for some fun. We are a friendly bunch always looking for new players to join our team, mothers, daughters, grandmothers all are welcome, you might not want to play but can help with scoring and umpiring, an important part of the team too. Our home games are played on a Monday evening at the Cricket Club if you fancy just popping down to see the set up come on 12th July and finally 2nd August. INDOOR BOWLS The doors are open again at your local Indoor Bowls club! Finally, Horsham Indoor Bowls Club is able to be open again and is welcoming new members. Come along and try something new! We have a Bowls4fun session on Wednesday evenings (arrive by 6.45pm) which is a great way to get into the game ... no pressure ... relaxed ... fun! We also have regular roll ups and competitions - something for everyone. For more information please contact admin@hdib.club or see our website hdib.club. OUTDOOR BOWLS Why not come along to the bowls green located behind The Ghyll (Leisure Centre) in Pevensey Road, Southwater, RH13 9XZ. YES! You can now come to church! In-person church services have now resumed. Until the end of lockdown you can ‘book’ you place in to come to services in the church by emailing: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk. After restrictions are lifted feel free to just come along!

Everyone is welcome. We have a traditional communion service at 8:30am every Sunday followed by an informal contemporary service at 10:30am. Services last around an hour and will be there will be free coffee and tea in the church hall. We don’t take ourselves seriously so be prepared to come and have fun while we worship God together as well as praying for our community and country.

Our theme for the Summer term is ‘Being a Christian in the workplace’

You can find us on Church Road, Broadbridge Heath: look for the triangular shaped building.

Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender With the so-called ‘Lockdown Freedom Day’ approaching on 19th July (at time of press), I wonder what that word means for us? Watching the recent England vs Scotland game at the Euros reminded me of the line in the film Braveheart: “they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!” Clearly there will be far less restriction on our movement and socialising, and it will give us a new freedom to plan our lives and see our friends and family. But what about the deeper aspects of our experience over the past 15 months? Will it bring freedom from fear? From anxiety or even guilt? The bible talks a lot about freedom. In particular, it says that “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free”: freedom from feeling condemned, freedom from the past, freedom from control and from the burdens of life. Life in Christ offers freedom to love others and to live life to the full without worrying about the expectations of others. For too long, the perception of the church has been one of restriction, judgement and guilt but the truth of the bible and the good news of Jesus cannot be further from this. My prayer for us as we finally begin to enjoy more freedom again over the Summer, is that you experience the love of your Father in heaven who desires to give you freedom from all fear and for us to move on from this year in the knowledge that we are deeply loved and given the opportunity to live life to the full. Have a wonderful Summer Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender, Vicar, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath. 8

HAVE YOU TRIED THE NEW LOCAL BATTERY RECYCLING COLLECTIONS? Recycle your batteries on your bin collection day with the Horsham District Council collection service.

Place your batteries in a small, clear plastic bag (such as a sandwich bag) and place the bag on top of your green-top refuse bin or your blue-top recycling bin on collection day. To ensure minimal use of plastic bags, store batteries until you have enough to fill a sandwich bag and have it securely closed. Please do not place one or two batteries out for collection as there is a risk the bag could blow away. Place your batteries inside a food bag such as a sandwich bag, and place the bag on top of your refuse or recycling bin on collection day. Batteries we can collect: AA , AAA, D, C, 6v, 9v, Button, Mobile phone batteries, Laptop batteries with the terminals taped. Batteries we cannot collect: Replaceable batteries left inside an electrical appliance. These should be removed and placed out for collection in a separate bag on top of your rubbish or recycling bin. Batteries with trailing wires. Children's ride-on toy batteries. Corroded batteries. Motorbike batteries. Industrial batteries. Sealed lactic acid/gel batteries. 12v leisure batteries.

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows We have continued this term with our outdoor meetings learning how to send morse code messages. The Rainbows took their teddies on an international adventure and enjoying an evening playing parachute games. After half term seven girls made their promise as Rainbows. 2nd Broadbridge Heath Brownies At BBH Brownies this term we have been able to meet outdoors face to face, and had a go at making and playing our own homemade mini golf courses! It was a lot of fun! We have a lot more fun outdoor activities planned including making and excavating our own fossils this term. 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides Continuing with our outdoor meeting, the Guides have made buddy burners, worked out which item cost the most in out tasting test: supermarket v branded. The Guides were given ingredients but no recipe to create a tasty dish and Scarlett has earned a Guide Bonze Award. Well done Scarlett.

If you can spare an hour or two a week or are willing to help behind the scenes with admin etc. we would love to hear from you. The Group is continuing to enjoy face-to-face Scouting. Our Scouts have been working hard on their camping skills and enjoyed a recent axe-throwing activity at the District campsite. The Cubs and Beavers have enjoyed a range of activities including wide games, backwoods cooking and a litter pick around the village. The members who moved on from Beavers to Cubs or Cubs to Scouts have now been invested and we will be looking to bring in new Beavers shortly. We are looking forward to a full range of activities in the second half of this term including hikes, beacon building and badge work. We are always on the look out for volunteers to join our friendly team on Committee or as Group Leaders – if you would be interested, even in a very small role, please contact our Group Scout Leader James by email at gsl1bbh@horshamscouts.com. We are particularly looking for a Beaver Leader or Assistant: on-going support will be provided and we have a willing rota of parent helpers. 11

Broadbridge Heath Parish Council Website: www.broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk Email: clerk@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk Facebook: Please Like our page, Broadbridge Heath Parish Council The Wildflower Meadow by the downgraded bypass is looking great with many pollinating insects moving in. There is lots of Yellow Rattle in flower, which we are informed is a key species to help control the ranker grasses. We received the necessary permissions from WSCC to maintain this area, and the winding path and border has now been cut in and we are pleased to see the path being enjoyed by residents. Top Common area continues to develop and has seen some Ragged Robin wildflowers in bloom and Greater Spotted Woodpeckers breeding. Local volunteers will be hoping to meet up again over the next couple of months to help with the ongoing maintenance and keeping the paths clear for walkers. These are ongoing projects of the Parish Council; thank you to our volunteers and David Bridges for his continued advice and support. Photo: Ragged Robin wildflowers.

We arranged a Village Litter Pick on June 12th supporting the Great British Spring Clean. Thank you to those of you that gave your time; it was great to hear your feedback and meet some new residents. Thank you again to those that regularly Litter Pick and help keep our village tidy, supporting the Parish Council. Please do get in touch and let us know any areas you regularly litter pick. We have recently had a Basic Ecological Survey carried out at the Ducky Pond and look forward to receiving the Full Report to ensure any future work follows recommendations. They were joined by damselflies and sticklebacks whilst they carried out the survey! Recently a BBQ was left unsafe in one on of our open spaces and fortunately, a nearby resident was quick to intervene. We wish all our residents a fun and safe summer, however, please help us care for our village by not lighting fires or placing BBQs on the ground. Please use the bins provided and if they are full, report them and/or take the rubbish home. Thank you. =============== An extract from the Parish Council Chairman’s Report, by Cllr Terry Oliver (May 2021). The full report, including words from Cllr Knight (Recreation Committee) and Cllr Clark (Planning Committee) can be found on our website and we would like to invite you to read it. This has been a year like no other. COVID-19 has changed the way we all live, work and communicate. It has impacted on the Parish Council on how we hold meetings, the focus of our activities, co-ordination of community support through the links and communications we have across the village, and beyond. One rewarding feature of the last year for me has been the way our community has pulled together and organised themselves into a support network, extending throughout the village and operating at street-level.

Cllr. Terry Oliver

Since April 2020 members of the public were able to access Zoom meetings as we moved to online for all council meetings. This has remained our mechanism for all meetings, whether in lockdown or not, for the past year. The Parish Council’s Website has been a source of information for the Community. A Covid-19 webpage was set up in April 2020 and has continued to provide up-to-date links to the latest information as well as sources of help and practical support for those who have needed it, making use of local links. A council priority has been the increased use of the Council’s social media presence during this time, such as Facebook, which have helped keep residents informed. The Parish Council is committed to encouraging effective local community engagement, and to developing relationships between the Council, individuals, and voluntary and community groups. The Broadbridge Heath Parish Council Community Partnership Forum has been established to link more directly with local community groups and voluntary organisations who offer service to residents of the parish. This forum was initially formed by the Council to ensure that our residents were receiving the necessary individual support during the pandemic. 13

However, it quickly became clear that this forum certainly has a life beyond the current crisis by providing the Council, on a monthly basis, with up to date information on the community’s voluntary current activities and their future aspirations and possible needs. Two areas the Council currently funds are youth support work through ‘4theYouth’ Horsham, and lonely and vulnerable people support through Age UK [West Sussex] Village Agent scheme. It is hoped that other community based initiatives can be partly, or wholly funded by the Parish Council. Photo: The Village Centre

The work of the Council on delivering projects has been severely curtailed due to the pandemic. However, the Council’s flagship project, the complete refurbishment of the Village Centre, was completed in May 2020. This project was started some five years ago and involved many hours of dedicated work by both the Village Centre Trustees and Parish Councillors for which I would like to thank them on behalf of the community. It was also hoped that with the completion of this refurbishment, the Parish Council’s new Monster Play Area would also be completed; however, due to the pandemic and some site access issues, this will now hopefully be completed during the autumn. Over the last twelve months the Parish Council has been actively working with Countryside Properties plc and other developers, together with all other interested parties, in trying to secure the transfer of community facilities like the Parish Office, allotments, play areas and green open spaces. I can report that matters have been, and continue to be, challenging for the Council. Equally, I acknowledge the whole community itself continues to face the results of delays which are not all associated with the pandemic. However, progress has been and continues to be made by the Council, by working with others on a daily basis to deliver the best outcomes for the whole community of Broadbridge Heath. Our expectations now are that most facilities will be transferred to the Council during the next 12 months. 14

The Council will communicate with residents, as and when each facility is in the ownership of the Parish Council. We are currently working to ensure that the day-to-day management and maintenance is in place and ready to commence following the date of transfer. Finally, I would like to thank the councillors who commit a lot of time, often unseen and unrecognised, to Parish Council activities. This involves attending meetings, ensuring proper, responsible decisions are made, facilities are maintained, and managed, and new initiatives developed. And, of course, thanks to the committed team of Parish Council staff, Lucinda (Clerk), Olivia (Assistant Clerk) and John (Environment Officer) who have continued working, also often unseen and unrecognised, for the benefit of the village throughout this difficult year.

Please continue to look at our Website, Notice Board, and like our Facebook page for Parish Council news and updates. Photo: Village Litter Pick

BBH Bombshells WI

What a great May meeting we had with the return of fascinating speaker Sarah Slater. Last time she told us stories of the ghosts of Hampton Court Palace, but this time it was all things rude & saucy at the Royal Courts. And my goodness what a raunchy lot they were those rich, privileged degenerates who ruled our country back then. We learned that it was positively expected of a king to take numerous mistresses, but not for a queen! And that Victorians really weren’t prudes at all: Queen V did have 9 kids after all! Further back in time we learnt that prostitution had it’s own version of the Yellow Pages & was completely legal. And that sex toys were definitely already invented but made of wood or leather! At our next meeting on Tuesday June 29th we will be welcoming another speaker with a talk called "Colour Me Beautiful", Kathy is a colourist and can give you great advice on what colours you should be wearing. Colour can have a huge impact on how we look, feel and how others perceive us... who knew? If you would like to come to this meeting you would be very welcome to join us. Your first meeting is free! For more information email our President, Rowena. We also continue to enjoy coffee mornings, informal walks, book club and wine club. And exciting news: Cocktail club has it’s first outing very soon to Kaya Cafe. Website: www.broadbridgebombshells.co.uk email: bbhwi1951@gmail.com ================================================================

Community Speedwatch (CSW) is a national initiative where active members of local communities join with the support of the Police, to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices. The Broadbridge Heath CSW scheme tries to address the concerns of residents from across the whole village, targeting specific roads where speeding issues have been identified. With the easing of lockdown, our volunteers have been able to start their roadside sessions again, including at our new location on the Billingshurst Road by Kingsmead Road. This has unfortunately proven to be a very busy location for the team, with almost 50% of motorists found to be breaking the speed limit during one recent morning session. When you consider that it only takes 1 minute longer to drive the whole length of the village at 20 mph than it does at 30 mph, can you really justify being in that much of a rush? Contact us: website communityspeedwatch.org email bbhspeedwatch@gmail.com 16

Hello Everyone, We hope that you have been keeping well and enjoying the glimpses of summer. We have had a few residents contact us recently who are struggling with their mental health and wellbeing. We know that this is something that has risen significantly in the last year and we wanted to make you aware that HDC offers a number of support services to residents. Please visit the HDC website (Horsham.gov.uk) and click on the Community and Wellbeing link for more information. You can also call the Health and Wellbeing team on 01403 215111 or email at info@horshamdistrictwellbeing.org.uk. We are also very pleased to say that a new Wellbeing Centre has recently opened in the Forum (Unit 4 The Forum, RH12 1PQ), which provides free support and services to those looking to improve their general health and wellbeing. We were recently made aware that the application for a Retirement Village at Wellcross Farm, which is just on the BBH ward boundary, has been successful on appeal. The development had previously been refused by Horsham District councillors when it went before the planning committee last year, but this decision on appeal means that they now have permission and so the development will go ahead. We do not yet have any information on timescales, but will keep you updated. We have been very disappointed by the lack of progress towards resolving the issues on the downgraded bypass and around the Neighbourhood Centre. We have recently heard from WSCC that progress is still being made towards the TRO to prohibit use of the road by HGVS and towards Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology being installed at the bus gate. The necessary data has been collected and the details of the options are being discussed with senior directors. We know the difficulties that these issues continue to cause residents and will continue to press to help get them resolved as soon as possible. Very best wishes, Louise and Matt Cllr Louise Potter – louise.potter@horsham.gov.uk Cllr Matthew Allen – matthew.allen@horsham.gov.uk 17

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

Investments in property We love our homes: most people can relate to property and how values can go up and down, so it’s a great starting point when talking about personal finances. Whilst your house might sometimes not increase in value at all for several years, it will do so generally over the long term, although this is not guaranteed, and it can go down. In fact in simplistic terms this is typical of many investments. When someone buys a property they often borrow money to fund this, which is called a mortgage. There are two types of mortgage: a 'capital and repayment' mortgage which you pay off as you go along; and an 'interest only' mortgage whereby a savings plan or the sale of a property is used to repay the loan. A key thing to remember is that the quicker you repay the debt the less it will cost you. A lot of people are surprised to find out how much of a saving can be made by repaying a mortgage over say 20 years rather than 25 years. Often people extend the term so that they can borrow more, but even if you take out a mortgage over 35 years rather than 20 years, for example, this does not necessarily stop you making overpayments to pay it off over a shorter term. However, some mortgages have a yearly maximum that you can repay without incurring a penalty so check first. 'Interest only' mortgages were popular in the past but in the meantime some people have decided to keep the property after all, so face a problem as the mortgage expiry date gets closer. People often ask us for solutions realising they should have acted earlier. My advice is that the earlier you act, the easier it is to make a plan to remedy the problem. If you would like help with this, your initial consultation is free and without obligation, so call 01403 280788 or email karen@monetarysolutions.co.uk.
