Broadbridge Heath Parish Council We wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year, and hope that despite the challenges an enjoyable Festive Season was had. We hope you enjoyed our first Christmas Tree outside the new Parish Office, the Christmas lights all over the village were a joy to see! And our thanks to everyone who supported the Parish Council voluntarily last year. In December we were able to support Horsham Matters with their Donation Crate’s and Collections, and we will continue to look at ways the Parish Council can support local initiatives for the community. As we start the New Year, Parish Council meetings will continue online via Zoom. Details can always be found on our website with forthcoming agendas also in the Noticeboard outside One Stop. Please like and follow our Facebook page (Broadbridge Heath Parish Council) where we will share timely news and village updates. HGV Lorries The Parish Council is aware of the disruption and damage caused by HGVs repeatedly ignoring the new road signage and entering the Wickhurst Green development along the old by-pass and we are seeking a solution. The problem is caused by HGV drivers not having up-to-date satnav systems that show this road is not a through-route. We have explored options including re-closing the road for a temporary period or introducing build-outs to deter HGVs however these options would either cause excessive disruption to residents or be ineffective to those HGV drivers who clearly persist in trying to follow their satnavs. Other options include prohibiting HGVs altogether from the area. Unfortunately it may take several months before any solution is in place as any works will be required to pass through formal Highway Authority channels and consultation. In the meantime the opening of the bus link has provided opportunity for some HGV drivers to use it as an ‘escape route’ however we appreciate other HGV drivers are still getting stuck along Sargent Way. We are also monitoring the numbers of cars that are abusing the bus link, are reporting offenses via Operation Crackdown and have engaged with our local PCSO to patrol this area routinely. Wickhurst Green In respect of the remaining works on the Wickhurst Green development, we have been working closely with HDC and Countryside and are happy to say that these are now nearing completion, with all remaining open spaces and the allotments to be complete around the end of January, ready for transfer to the Parish Council. Land preparation work is also now being carried out on the school site to enable WSCC to take ownership and the DfE to provide a primary school. A formal application for the school is expected in due course. Best Wishes for 2021 Lucinda – clerk@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk Olivia – assstclerk@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk 3

Although Christmas is over now, I thought you’d like to see all these beautiful Christmas table decorations! We had a lovely time in December learning how to make them at an online workshop run by one of our very talented members. We also got together for the play reading I mentioned last time. It really was a huge amount of fun – and one or two ladies quite surprised us with their thespian talent. We all laughed so much, we decided this is something we will definitely have to do again. We joined our sister WI, the Broadbridge Bombshells, for one of their meetings on the ‘Ghosts of Hampton Court’. It was a brilliant evening, as Sarah (who works at Hampton Court) entertained us with some of the many stories about the ghosts who reportedly inhabit the famous palace. There were lots of other activities, keeping us in touch in the run-up to Christmas, including a poetry writing competition and, of course, our recipe sharing. As we start a New Year, we’re planning more online events to make sure everyone stays connected until we can all meet again face to face. We’re looking forward to some more virtual quizzes and virtual coffee mornings, but most of all, we’re looking forward to the time when it is safe for us to get back together again and catch up over a cuppa. Christmas will have been a very strange and sad time for many of us as we had to make sacrifices to ensure everyone stayed safe and well. It will have been worth it. We will get over this.

So happy New Year and let’s all hope that 2021 will bring a better year for everyone. Keep safe and do get in touch if you’d like to join us. We always welcome new members. Broadbridge Heath WI email: BBHWI@uwclub.net phone Maureen: 01403 268963 or Wendy: 01403 217152 6

Broadbridge Bombshells WI look back on 2020

Hate to bang on about it but Covid19 put paid to pretty much all of our plans to get together face to face in 2020. However, we were not to be deterred and held all of our meetings post March 16th online instead. None of us had never heard of Zoom before lockdown, but even the worst technophobes amongst us managed to take part in the meetings. So the highlights… Quantum Meditation and Gin Tasting with Helen from The Gin Kitchen in Dorking, were both held before lockdown… then all of our plans had to be hastily rearranged. Amongst the quizzes and a game of Scategories we also had a ‘show and tell’ evening which was a novel way to find out about our fellow Bombshells. Our virtual speakers have been David Allen on the subject of ‘The Weird and Wonderful World of the Law’ and Sarah Slater on ‘The Ghosts of Hampton Court Palace’. Our craft-along sessions have also been quite successful and we made fragrant, fizzy bath bombs and Christmas Tree centre piece decorations. Sadly there was to be no Christmas Fayre selling our fabulous homemade bakes and mulled wine, and no Christmas knees up which has always been a huge success. This year we will be having our Christmas celebrations online and will be getting together for a Murder Mystery/Christmas Bake Off/Festive Supper Club, so it will still be fun! Although 2020 hasn’t been the best, in true WI spirit we have made the best of it.

If you are interested in becoming a Bombshell please do contact us, although we cannot know what next year will bring, if we get our way we have numerous exciting activities planned. Hopefully we will be able to run these face to face, but if not contingency plans are always in place! Here are some of the exciting things we are looking forward to in 2021: Saucy Burlesque; Up Cycling; Easter and Christmas Crafts; Tai Chi; Rounders; Quiz and Film Night. First meeting is always free so please do get in touch!

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL: Broadbridge Heath Football Club At the time of writing, we are still playing football although I realise that by the time this is printed and distributed that may no longer be the case with the global pandemic causing so much disruption to all our lives but as long as we remain safe and well that's is the main thing. Our wet winters continue to disrupt our football teams with the juniors in particular hit hard with both matches and training postponed on a regular basis, the only solution to these times does appear to be artificial pitches but the cost to install one currently prohibits us from going down that route. The senior sides have not been affected by the wet weather anywhere near as bad as the junior teams with the drainage on pitch at The Countryside Stadium the envy of most clubs in our league and despite losing matches earlier in the season due to some of or players testing positive for COVID, we are now up to date with our fixtures. We continue to pull in the crowds for home matches despite the pavilion and bar being closed under Tier 2 rules. In our last home match before Christmas over 150 people turned up to cheer the team to a 6-1 victory against Eastbourne United, a team who defeated us 3-0 on the opening day of the season. We unfortunately lost our Under 23 manager Mitchell Garrett who took on a coaching role at Wimbledon FC and we wish him all the very best at his new club, but we are delighted to have found a replacement in Howard Wrate and Steve Coveney who both have a lot of experience managing and coaching at youth level and we wish them every success. In their first match in charge the team put on a performance to impress the new management winning at Oakwood by 7-1. Our Under 18 team continue to do well in the Southern Combination League North Division, currently in third place having only lost one match so far. This is quite an achievement for such young players considering the majority of the side were playing Under 16 football last season but they have competed well and have shown true quality with six of their players having already played for the Under 23s and one player Ben Cooksley having played twice for the First Team. Meanwhile the club are seeking volunteers at all levels to help with various tasks, so if you can spare some time then please do get in touch. CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane, Broadbridge Heath

Just a few words to keep the cricket club in readers consciousness as the village wades its way through covid (still Tier 2 as I write) and the non-stop rain. TEAs. Many readers might recall the recent national publicity given to the Sussex Cricket League’s decision, taken at their AGM, to cancel the requirement for the home club to provide tea between innings. Such sustenance has long been a tradition of the game but last season’s covid arrangements of players bringing their own food to eat on the outfield worked so well the AGM carried the vote to change history. The national outcry and issues with the Zoom vote counting forced a rethink and a subsequent new vote reversed the decision – so no change so long as the covid restrictions have been lifted by April. Here at the Heath we were probably going to continue to provide sandwiches and cakes anyway ! The uncertainty of the covid situation means that although recreational sport can continue in West Sussex at the moment under Tier 2, the planned Winter Indoor League at St Wilfred’s School, Crawley has been cancelled. Completely understandable but a real shame as it provides competitive local cricket in which we usually do well against the bigger local clubs. Without waders we can’t do much work at the Top Common at the moment but we did manage to have the outfield verti-drained before the rain set-in so hopefully that will help the ground cope with the water. Colin Case ============================================================== 1st Broadbridge Heath Scouts Despite the challenges this half term the Scout Group has continued to meet, with Scouts meeting in person and Cubs and Beavers meeting over Zoom. The Section Leaders continue to assess the situation and are hopeful that the Cubs may manage to meet outside in the New Year.

The Scouts have been working on the map and compass skills with a series of hikes which culminated in a 10km hike for their last meeting of term. They have also managed a cooking challenge and a fire safety evening alongside some virtual meetings. Our Senior Scout has gained his Chief Scouts Gold Award, a real achievement as he heads onto Explorers. The Cubs and Beavers have been working on their Great Indoors badge, completing a variety of activities including new crafts and learning new skills along the way. All three sections are looking to start a full program next year, investing new Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and organising a wide range of activities. Our Beaver Colony continues to have a substantial waiting list so please do sign up your child in good time. We are searching for a Beaver Leader, if there is anyone in the area who would be interested please drop a line to James, our Group Scout Leader (gsl1bbh@horshamscouts.com) - on-going support will be provided. 9

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows After half term we continued Rainbows online during the second lockdown. The girls enjoyed a Diwali themed evening taking part in a yoga session and making salt dough diyas. As it was coming up to St Andrew’s day the girls made shortbread and designed a family tartan. The girls have enjoyed a few Christmas crafts and bingo. We are delighted that three girls made their Rainbow promise online. Two Rainbows have completed their Rainbow Gold Awards before they move up to Brownies which will be presented to them in after Christmas. We are looking forward to going back to our outdoor meetings in January. 2nd BBH Brownies We all enjoyed the activities that have been organised so far for the badges, and as we have finished those we went back in time and had a look at Brownie pockets, and talked about different scenarios that they could use the items in their pockets. Our Zoom meeting was a huge success and we used this opportunity for our new girls to make their promise and become official members of our Unit. We will look forward to having face to face meetings soon. 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides Back on zoom from half term due to the second lockdown. The Guides have also made shortbread, completed the Take Action skills builder and played games such as Dobble, Taskmaster and Scattergories. Four girls made their Guide promise online. We enjoyed meeting our American penpals for the first time over zoom. The girls played games and chattered about similarities and differences between the 2 nations. We are looking forward to returning to outdoor meetings in January. I am very proud to have 2 Guides moving up to Rangers who have completed their Guide Gold Awards.

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

2021 is here! I’ve heard so many people say that they couldn’t wait for the new year to arrive and put 2020 behind them. There can’t be anyone for whom this last year has not been an unusual one. I know that for myself the most important thing as I sit writing this article is that my family are all well, I can still afford to put food on the table, and I do fully recognise the significance of this. But what has happened in the UK financial world? In the first quarter of 2020 the Dow Jones and the FTSE 100 saw the biggest quarterly drops since 1987, plunging 23% and 25% respectively. Interestingly as I write (14/12/2020), the Dow Jones is higher than it began the year whilst the FTSE 100 has still got some way to go, but then again the Dow Jones does include Apple and Microsoft. The UK Government has helped the housing market by increasing the stamp duty threshold to £500,000 for anyone completing on a residential property before 31st March 2021, to save property prices from a drop. The Bank of England Base rate, which influences savings accounts, credit cards, loans and mortgages, has been cut to a current rate of 0.1%. The rate was already at a record low following the financial crisis of 2008/2009, and cut further in August 2016 following the Brexit vote. There is even talk of negative interest rates for the UK which could mean lenders paying customers to borrow money and savers earning a negative return. Other countries have already had this. Many people are predicting increases to taxes in the future to pay for all the aid being provided. Maybe now it’s time for you to consider all the tax benefits available if you have savings on deposit, or investments in place. At Monetary Solutions we offer a free without obligation consultation so why not pick up the phone today.
