Happy New Year! Looking at our smiles and the groaning food table below, you can see we had a good time at our Christmas lunch - you probably think that all we ever do is eat, drink and have fun. OK, that is what we do a lot of the time but we also raise awareness and campaign on issues of local, national and international concern.
With over 220,000 members, the WI is recognised as a powerful force for change. So while most of us are making (and breaking) New Year resolutions, WIs across the UK are discussing the resolutions we want to progress in 2020. Our list includes: Increasing stem cell donor registration - to provide life-saving cancer treatment. Female crash test dummies – women are significantly more likely to die, or be seriously injured in car crashes because test dummies are all based on male shapes. End modern slavery - tens of thousands of victims are hiding in plain sight in the UK. Time to talk about death and dying – 64% of us think we avoid talking about death, yet it can really help people to get the end of life care they would want.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL: Broadbridge Heath Football Club As the year comes to a close, we can look back over a 12 month period of frustration, anticipation and finally excitement as the Clubs long-term ambition of having a home of our own finally came to fruition. Frustration because of the time it took, our expectations were that we would have been in situ long before the dwellings in Cook Way were occupied and the years dragged on and on. Anticipation because the pavilion was finished in August 2018 and we were just waiting for the developers and the District Council to agree when we could take ownership and Excitement having finally moved into the pavilion on August 5th, a day before our first league match of the season. Since then it's been full on, hardly a day goes by without some of our volunteers working on the facilities whether that's constructing something, routine maintenance, cleaning, working in our bar and kitchen, managing and coaching one of our teams or doing administration work, the jobs are endless and a big thank you to everyone involved, without you this wouldn't have been possible. The Social Club is taking shape and if you haven't already visited us, then why not pop along one evening and take a look, although not fully established we are open Sunday from 12,00 midday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and when the first team are playing at home on Saturdays the social club and bar is open from midday.
We also have a choir singing in the club on Tuesday mornings from 10.00 until 12.00 and they'll be delighted to hear from you should you wish to join in. The room is also available for other community groups to hire during the day so if you are looking for a venue then please get in touch we'll be delighted to show you around. Just a short report from me to make sure we are not forgotten during this very wet winter. At our recent AGM, 1st XI captain Tom Endacott notified his decision to stand-down to concentrate on his playing. Tom has been a star performer for us in recent seasons and it’s important that after injury, he returns to top form as we try to establish ourselves as a strong team in a competitive Division 6. As a result, James Round was elected as the new captain and James follows a strong family tradition in the club with his dad and brother both playing too. Meanwhile, our winter indoor team is still going well in the Crawley League with a win over Crawley ‘B’ but a defeat to Three Bridges ‘A.’ By the time you read this our indoor nets at the Hove County Ground will have started so please let me know if any readers would like to join us. Finally, our Awards Evening is on the 23rd December at the clubhouse. Now it’s back to watching the cricket in Australia on TV, particularly the fabulous weather in Perth. News from your Horsham District Councillors in Broadbridge Heath We hope the residents of Broadbridge Heath had a very peaceful and merry Christmas. A new year is upon us again and 2020 will bring a lot of change to this country and to Broadbridge Heath. A new government will bring unprecedented change, whether you voted for or against it, we will all be impacted by their actions. As your District Councillors we will be working to make sure that the council is prepared to deal with whatever comes next. The biggest challenge for the council will not be Brexit, but rather how we deal with our finances. At the time of writing it is not clear what changes if any will be made to the council’s income, but we will be keeping a close eye on this as more information comes to light. On a more local scale, this year should see the major highways work and major development in the village come to an end. As your District Councillors we are looking at ways we can become more engaged in the village and tackle more of the issues that matter most to you. Look out for information on some upcoming councillor surgeries. There are a number of local issues that we will be consulting on this year, especially as we move closer to the Local Plan Review and we look forward to engaging with you on them. So, Was That It? Phew! It’s January and we’ve done Christmas and are now looking ahead to the New Year (but not the credit card statement!) and wondering what lies ahead. Perhaps you’re excited or perhaps you are fearful of the future. But let’s just pause and think about what has just happened……. We start the Christmas process in about October (or at least the shops do) and then we race about getting presents, making arrangements, perhaps go to nativity plays and carol services, eat Christmas dinner, watch the festive episode of Dr Who and then get ready for New Year – quickly followed by getting back into the normal routine. Christmas rapidly becomes a hazy memory – but is that really it? Shouldn’t the wonder and excitement of Christmas be something that stays with us for a bit longer? Is Jesus confined to a few weeks a year – we get him out for a nativity play and some well-loved songs and then put him back in the loft with the decorations until next year? One of the songs in the Shelley School KS1 nativity had the words “Jesus is the greatest gift in history” and if that’s true then He clearly isn’t just for Christmas but is someone we can enjoy and know all the year round. In John’s gospel we read that “God so loved the world that he gave His only son that whoever believes in Him shall be saved and have eternal life.” God wants us to know him so much that Jesus was given to live as a normal human to show us how we can experience God’s love – not just at Christmas but all year and all of our lives. And, we can choose to receive and enjoy this gift or to put it back in its box in the loft. My prayer and hope is that you enjoy the truth of Christmas throughout the coming year and that 2020 brings you many blessings. ——————————— Praying for Our Local Streets. VILLAGE ROADWORKS UPDATE. Note from the BBH Mag Editor: This information is supplied by the contractors and was correct at the time this magazine went to press (15th December 2019).Let’s all hope the work is completed soon; it’s been difficult time for many residents. =============== Planned works for January 2020:
1. At Farthings Hill the footways outside of Hendy Ford and the Shell petrol station will be completed. The old footways on the north side of the roundabout will be removed as pedestrian access around the roundabout will be provided by the new footways and traffic signal controlled crossing points. 2. Resurfacing works to the Newbridge roundabout can now take place following the stopping up of the old access into Billingshurst Road. These works are planned for mid-January 2020. In addition to this resurfacing work the footways to the north and west of the roundabout will be widened and re-surfaced. Countryside Properties and their Contractors, Walker Construction, are expected to start construction works on the new Neighbourhood Centre downgrading on the C622 in January. They will provide dates and more information in due course. We continue to liaise with them on temporary traffic management and handover of the closure on the C622. Please remember that businesses are open as usual at Tesco, the Bridge Leisure Centre, Bridge Retail Park and in the village of Broadbridge Heath. We would like to thank the local community for their continued patience during these improvements as we realise that works of this nature can be inconvenient. Our site will be closed during from 20th December and reopen on Monday 6th January to complete the remaining works. The team would like to offer our warm wishes over this festive period and are looking forward to completing the Broadbridge Heath Major Improvement Scheme in the early part of 2020. New Year’s resolution Last month we had a General Election and whether we are happy or not with the result I am sure most would agree that the people sent a clear message for the Government to sort things out so that we can move forward. As we enter another year it’s time to consider our New Year’s resolutions. If you’re having difficulties deciding what yours are, here’s our advice. We can usually improve our lives somehow, and there will certainly be ways we can move forward. So what is a good starting point? First, look at last year and ask yourself if you were happy with the way it went and if not, what could be improved? Base your resolutions on this. For example, if you believe you worked too hard make it your resolution but also include how much downtime you should have. This is more meaningful than giving up chocolate for example, and the more meaningful resolutions are more likely to be achieved. As an adviser, I always feel you should include a financial resolution, outlining your goals. We aim to achieve this for our clients when we hold their annual review. I also believe that any resolutions should be written down and all goals defined clearly. So don’t leave them to the last minute, take time to really think about what you want. If you feel there is too much to expect to achieve in one year, consider what steps you can take towards making it happen.
