NEW VICAR ANNOUNCED FOR ST JOHN’S CHURCH Members of St John’s Church in Broadbridge Heath now know who will be their next vicar. It was announced in the Sunday services on 19th January that the new vicar will be Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender. Mark and his wife Ali have two children who are both at college, and he is currently a Curate at St Paul’s Church, Crofton, near Opington, Kent. Mark Lavender was appointed following the retirement, last year, of the previous Vicar, Paddy Beresford.

Rev. Dr Mark Lavender

One of the two Church wardens, Liz New, told the ‘BBH Mag’ that it’s hoped the new vicar and his family will be able to take up the post very soon. She said “We shall be able to give more details about when we expect them to move to Broadbridge Heath when we know more”. It’s likely that they will live in the vicarage opposite the church. A licensing service for Rev. Lavender will be held at St John's Church on Thursday 26th March at 7.30pm. New Parish St John’s Church is part of the Church of England and there has been a church in the village since a Mission Church of iron and wood was licensed in 1904. It was used until 1957 when it was declared unsafe and demolished. Between 1957 and 1963 church services were held in the Village Room in Wickhurst Lane. The present Church of St John (Apostle and Evangelist) was opened on November 2nd 1963 and was part of a group of churches including St Mary’s in Horsham town centre. But in November last year the Church of England granted the congregation the right to operate on its own as a separate parish church. A Consecration service for the new ‘Benefice and Parish of Broadbridge Heath’ will be held at the church on Monday 24th February at 7.30pm. 4

Creating a Buzz Enthusiastic volunteers have been hard at work recently, creating new habitat in Broadbridge Heath for bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other pollinating insects!

With massive declines in wildlife and the loss of 97% of the UK’s wildflower meadows, a huge effort is now needed to restore nature.

If you would like to help with this vital work, please contact: David Bridges - mobile 078 408 71755 or visit our Facebook page www.facebook.com/Broadbridge-Heath-Wildlife101976274668495/ 5

News from your Horsham District Councillors in Broadbridge Heath This month we would like to give you some information on how you can have your say on the upcoming Local Plan review. The Government has instructed all local authorities to build a significant number of new houses in the coming years. In order to provide the housing, Horsham District Council has to come up with a Local Plan. The Horsham District Local Plan will set out how the District will deliver these developments in a sustainable way, addressing climate change issues and supporting the delivery of community infrastructures, transport links and opportunities for local, well paid jobs. The new Local Plan will guide development in the District until 2036. When the Local Plan is released we encourage every resident to read the plans and give their views on it. At the time of writing (mid January) we aren’t sure whether sites in Broadbridge Heath will be included in the Plan. In the past we have seen developments go up without the infrastructure to support this. As your District Councillors we oppose development in the area that doesn’t benefit our residents or provide the infrastructure to benefit our residents. You may also have thoughts on development in other parts of the Horsham District and where houses should be built outside of Broadbridge Heath. You will be able to give your thoughts on the entire plan during this consultation. Horsham District Council will be consulting on the first draft of the Horsham District Local Plan 2019-2036 in February to March 2020. You can find out more and sign up for updates at www.horsham.gov.uk/localplanreview. Best wishes, Matthew Allen and Louise Potter

http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp Hard to believe but despite the deluge over the last 4 months or so (approx 18 inches reported by Southern Water) the new year brings thoughts of this year’s coming cricket season. Our new league fixtures are due to be published shortly and preseason friendlies have already been booked with Findon and Scaynes Hill for the last two Saturday’s in April. In preparation, our indoor nets have just started with Friday evenings at the Sussex Indoor School at Hove and we are still playing in the Crawley Indoor League, although that has been slow to get going post-Christmas. Meanwhile, the news from the paddy-field they call the Top Common is not so good. Sadly, an oak tree which was over a century old has collapsed across the stream and crushed our batting cage. Fortunately there was no other damage to our property and the Parish Council are helping with the tree’s removal. I understand that there may still be a little movement in the tree as it lowers still further so if anyone is walking their dog in the area please pass well-clear. Colin Case

KINDEROOS; A village group for babies and toddlers.

Gemma Bridle, a volunteer at Kinderoos writes: 2020 will be our 10th year of successfully running Kinderoos. We began in 2010 and since then the group has expanded to more volunteers, more children regularly attending and plenty more activities taking place each week. We are a community run group that hold weekly sessions every Thursday at the St John’s Church Hall for children of ages new born to 4yrs These children and their parents can enjoy a morning of playing, arts and crafts, soft play, sensory room etc. We also have an annual Christmas party where the children can enjoy snacks, playing and meeting Father Christmas. Those in charge of the group are volunteers who have been fully trained in First Aid and have children that attend Kinderoos each Thursday. We believe Kinderoos is fantastic for the community as it is a safe haven for children where they can enjoy a morning of fun, broaden their social skills and is also good for parents to meet like-minded people.

If you wish to come along for a session at Kinderoos then please contact 07423 580652 or check out our Facebook Page Kinderoo Baby & Toddler Group. We look forward to celebrating our 10th Birthday this year, and to the many years ahead! 9

Parish Point of View Brian New, Assistant Priest, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Is the Bible a love letter? In a time which many may have forgotten or not experienced – before emails, texts and mobile phones - people used to write letters to one another to keep in touch, announce events and, most importantly as Valentine’s Day is coming, to express their love for each other. There was the excitement of putting pen to paper, the care about how to say things to the loved-one and then the anticipation of receiving a reply – usually a wait of days rather than the seconds it takes now. And, once the reply was received, reading and re-reading it to get every gram of meaning from the pages and then carefully composing the next response. Well, I see the Bible in much the same way – to me it is a long love letter from God to us in which, over and over again, He tells us how much He loves us and wants us to get to know Him better. It was written down by many people over many years, yet all of them inspired to write about how God has impacted on their lives and the lives of others. Now, I’m not saying there aren’t parts of the Bible that are hard to understand or read (there are!), but the whole sweep of it is about God’s love for us and His determination not to give up on us. Of course, as we were reminded at Christmas and will think about again at Easter, the ultimate expression of God’s love comes in Jesus – given to remove any barriers between us and God. Jesus is called “the Word” of God – a love letter in person. And a person that we can all meet and know today. If you have a bible (maybe gathering dust) on your bookshelf, why not read it and see for yourself, perhaps starting with Luke’s Gospel in the New Testament? ———————————

January is a bleak month when we need something to look forward to so we kicked off the decade with our New Year Lunch – excellent food and plenty of time to relax and enjoy some socialising. Next month we’ll be popping popcorn and eating ice cream at our film afternoon. You’re very welcome to join us, by the way. Just come along to St John’s Community Hall at 2.30. We’re there every second Tuesday in the month.

I was chatting to someone over Christmas and when I mentioned the WI, she said it “wasn’t for her”. I’m surprised when women say that, as there’s something for everyone. But then I thought about how and why I joined because, if I’m honest, I never thought the WI was for me either. When I moved here from London, I met someone who invited me to a meeting as a good way to meet people and make some new friends. It was fascinating. The speaker brought along some rag rugs, told us their history and showed us how to make them. Before fitted carpets, rag rugs would cheer up a cold floor and keep your feet warm. They could even be used as blankets if it was really cold. Old sacks were used as backing for strips of fabric to be pushed or pulled through. These days they are made for pleasure but they were born out of necessity and although no one had heard of recycling in those days, the rugs were a perfect example of it – not just by recycling your old clothes but the rugs themselves were also recycled. When the one in the kitchen wore out, it was moved to the scullery and the one from the bedroom would come down. As they were moved around, there was always a new one on the go and from an early age, children were taught how to measure fabric around a match box before cutting out the strips to be used. This traditional craft is enjoying a resurgence with the technique now used for wall hangings, bags, cushion covers, even pictures. What’s more, people are now recycling other materials like plastic bags, leather and recycled knitting wool. So, apart from making lots of new friends and having fun, I am always learning something new. It’s a bit like Marmite, before you say you won’t like it, try it. You might be surprised. 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides The guides finished Autumn term playing games in the dark at our campsite, first aid skills builder badges and a pamper evening. The girls took an active part in the village Remembrance service. This term the girls are looking forward to fire building, creating a short movie based on our promise, thinking about plastic pollution, making wax food wrap and a sleepover at Flip Out. 2nd Broadbridge Heath Brownies It has been a busy term for the 2nd BBH Brownies, the girls have been getting to grips with the new programme activities and so far the response has been very positive! We have been completing the Sussex Central 40th Birthday challenge and have enjoyed many different activities across different categories, I think the most enjoyable one so far was a Tea Party for the families of the girls, which involved making sandwiches and decorating cakes. The girls were very well represented at the Remembrance Day service and the Division Carol service. We finished off the term with Christmas craft activities and a visit to the Panto in Horsham. We are always looking for volunteers so if you would like to help any of our units then please get in touch. 1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows The rainbows finished the Autumn term creating their own marble mazes, creating their own paper from different types of recycled paper, to help them remember their promise we created promise potions and karate tennis. The girls will be choosing which activities they would like to complete when we start the new term. Our waiting list for Rainbows and Brownies continues to grow at an alarming rate. If you can spare an hour or 2 a week or are willing to help behind the scenes with admin etc. we would love to hear from you. For more information regarding volunteering please contact:

Broadbridge Heath Major Highway Improvement scheme A statement from West Sussex County Council During the last few months, West Sussex County Council and Jackson Civil Engineering have been pushing hard to complete the Broadbridge Heath Major Highway Improvement scheme’s work at Newbridge and Farthings Hill junctions. Just before Christmas, 18th December, we were able to partially open the junction at Newbridge to allow two-way traffic on the new connector road at Billingshurst Road and also the full traffic signals at Farthings Hill. This has been a challenging project to deliver, and we are grateful to local residents and businesses for their understanding. On return in the new year, the team now has some works to finish on the footways at Newbridge and Farthings Hill, which we anticipate will complete (subject to weather conditions) by the end of January/early February, 2020. A county council spokesperson said: “We hope people will see all the improvements we have made/are making, in line with the principles set out in the Horsham District Council Local Plan. The county will be undertaking some post-opening monitoring surveys, which are expected to take place during May / June 2020, subject to the completion of the parking areas and bus gate outside the new Neighbourhood Centre (Countryside Properties and Walker Construction) which complete the downgrading of the old bypass (C622).” BBH Mag Editor writes: These roadworks have brought much change to the village. We would like to hear your views on it now that the work is nearly complete. Write to the BBH Mag Editor by email at bbh.mag@gmail.com before 15th February.

Karen

MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

A financial education People often reveal to me their lack of understanding about money, a matter that consumes a major part of our life. Reports suggest that money worries are the biggest triggers of stress in the UK*1. Many people claim they wish they were taught about finances at school but it has only been part of the National Curriculum since 2014.

For example, statistics reported last year*2 are alarming: In 2017 around 6.5 million adults in the UK had no cash savings. Money Charity carried out a survey*3 to assess people’s understanding of finances, and the results were as follows: 17% of under 35’s believed the bank of England base rate was over 10%. (It’s 0.75%) 14% of under 35’s think it’s better to start pension savings in your 50’s than your 20’s. (This makes it much harder to save enough) 43% of under 35’s don’t understand that 5% inflation would erode the value of money in a savings account which pays 3% interest. How would you tackle these issues? A good question to ask would be, “If you lost your income tomorrow due to sickness or redundancy, how would you survive?” A good financial education could help you plan and ensure you’re prepared for this dilemma. If you want to achieve a better understanding of this subject, our advice would be to seek help. At Monetary Solutions we offer a free without obligation consultation, which can help to educate you on what is available. *1Independent 28th May 2018 *2Statista 5th Nov 2019 *3Money Charity 15th January 2020 Karen MacDonald is an independent financial adviser with Monetary Solutions (www.monetarysolutions.co.uk).
