News from Shelley Primary School The building works are coming to an end at Shelley Primary School. The whole school site should be finished by the end of this year. We would like to thank all local residents, parents and particularly the children for their patience and understanding while the work has been carried out. The children are really enjoying their new surroundings and it has made a huge difference to the school. We look forward to making use of the our new Community Room once COVID restrictions allow, which will benefit the whole community. On a similar note, we have been working with the local charity ‘Horsham Matters’ and are please to confirm that we will shortly be able to act as a donation point for them. The donation point will be based in our school reception – we will send out further details once we have the point set up. We hope to continue working closely with other groups in the community to provide support over Christmas and beyond during this particularly difficult time. Children recently took part in a charity day where they could wear something yellow or spotty for Children in Need. We are pleased to announce we raised £264.50 through donations. ——————————————————————————————————————

Sadly, there will be no Christmas Fayre at the Village Centre to look forward to this year and, for many people, this Christmas will be very different. But keeping safe and well has to be everyone’s priority so that we’ll be able to make up for it in 2021. Staying positive and looking forward will get us through this, as well as focusing on what we have instead of what we don’t have. For example, we are so very lucky to have the technology to keep us in touch with family and friends. I can’t help thinking about how hard it must have been for families in the pandemic a hundred years ago when most people didn’t even have a phone never mind television, the Internet or any of the other things we enjoy! All of us at Broadbridge Heath WI are still finding ways to stay connected. It’s not so long ago that we were getting together in socially distanced small groups, and we’re not going to let bad weather and a second lockdown stop us from keeping in touch safely. We’ve just had our AGM – electronically and, thanks to technology, we’re looking forward to virtual quizzes and virtual coffee mornings, a poetry writing competition, recipe sharing, a craft workshop, and we are even linking up with other WIs to join them at some of the events they are organising. So, we are certainly keeping busy. Our next event is a virtual play reading. We’ve chosen a play about a Townswomen’s Guild putting on a performance of a Christmas Carol. It’s a comedy but I have no doubt it would be just as chaotic and hilarious if we were doing Macbeth! Keep safe and do get in touch with us if you’d like to join us. We always welcome new members. 1st Broadbridge Heath Scouts Last term and over the summer, whilst we were away from face-to-face Scouting, the Scout Hall has had some much-needed improvements, thanks to a S106 grant from the new estate developers. The wooden floor has been replaced and the garden has been revamped including building some fire pits which we are all looking forward to using. A recent, much appreciated, donation from the Broadbridge Heath Magazine has enabled the Group to buy modern maps and compasses - essential for getting the whole Group out on more hikes. This term 1st Broadbridge Heath Scouting resumed in various guises - the Beavers and the Cubs with online meetings and the Scouts meeting outside. For the next few weeks’ with Scouts will also meet online and then, assuming the guidance does not change, we are hoping to resume indoor meetings for the Scouts after half-term to allow them to continue their meetings regardless of the weather. This year we asked our Scouts, Cubs and Beavers to observe the two minute silence on their doorsteps. Our GSL was the able to lay a wreath on behalf of the whole Group and the Committee The Beavers have enjoyed a “Journey Through Time”, creating their own 2020 Time Capsules whilst learning about some of the changes that have been seen in the village and applying practical skills such as knot-tying and map-drawing. Our Beaver colony continues to have a substantial waiting list so do sign your child up in good time if you think that they may be interested in attending once they turn six. The Cubs have had a busy half-term, working hard on their badges. They are looking forward to starting the “Great Indoor” badge, which they will be able to engage with whatever the rules are about meeting in person. The Scouts have managed to socially distance for outdoors meetings and have been hiking and taking advantage of the fire pits.

At the end of term we will be saying a sad but grateful farewell to our Beaver leader, Sharon. The Beavers have enjoyed a fantastic programme while she has been “Birch” and she leaves the colony in great shape. If there is anyone in the area who would be interested in becoming a Beaver Leader please drop a line to James, our Group Scout Leader (gsl1bbh@horshamscounts.com) - on-going support will be provided and we have a willing rota of parent helpers. 7

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL: Broadbridge Heath Football Club As predicted in last month's edition our season came to a premature end for the second time since September having already started a month later than normal and then being forced to close for 14-days following two of our players returning positive results for Covid-19. Will our teams complete their season or will it be yet another year of null and void football results, who knows but as long as we all stay safe and well that is the priority? This season we have purchased a video system that allows us to video all matches, home and away. The system is also used to help improve coaching techniques by showing various moves within the match to the players, helping them to understand what the coaching staff expect from them and in turn improving their own game. At the moment it's mainly used by the senior section although it is our intention to also use it to help improve the coaching of our junior players while also capturing those magic moments during a game and sharing them on social media platforms such as Twitter and FaceBook. There have been some very entertaining games played at The Countryside Stadium, whether that's The Frist Team, under 23s, under 18s or The Veterans there have been moments of real quality and some of the goals scored will be remembered for a very long time. One in particular immediately springs to mind, scored by Craig Goodsir in the first teams 4-1 home win over AFC Uckfield, who at the time were unbeaten and top of the division. Goodsir received the ball in his own half wide on the left, he spotted the Uckfield keeper a long way off his line and struck a left foot shot from the halfway line that soared over the retreating keeper into the net, not a bad strike for a defender and a clip that's been viewed over 10,000 times on social media. Away from the game, work is still ongoing on the two outside pitches, the contractor was back mid-November to do some more groundwork, fertilising and verti-draining the area and at the moment it's looking alright but then again it was in reasonable condition this time last year, it wasn't until late January early February that the leatherjackets did the damage, so let's keep everything crossed that the same won't happen again this time? With the latest Government and FA COVID Guidelines in place and more restrictions likely to follow before we start playing again, the club are seeking volunteers at all levels to help with various tasks, so if you can spare some time don't be shy, please do get in touch. Meanwhile keep an eye out on our website, Twitter or Facebook for more information on Club Opening Times, Match Days and other events. https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/broadbridgeheathfc 8

As the winter approaches and covid still prevents recreational sport, there are still important matters for us as a club to pursue. They include the purchase of our own outfield mower and the installation of pitch drainage, particularly along the Warnham side of the ground. We are making good progress with both those key improvements and hopefully both will be completed in time for next spring. Both will help us improve the outfield significantly and perhaps then enable us to offer the provision of local pitches to the village Junior Football Club – or, if no longer needed by them, another local junior team. Multi-sport-use of the Top Common is further key to the funding and development of the site. However, the elephant in the room (or should I say rabbit) remains the infestation of the furry creatures and that is the MAJOR issue we need to resolve but before we go too far with the above improvements. Meanwhile, there is still no news on the winter indoor league in Crawley and indoor net practice at the Country Ground, Hove. Colin Case

At St John’s we are determined to ensure that we celebrate Christmas as well as we can this year. There will inevitably be restrictions on how we can meet together but by no means is Christmas going to be cancelled! The Christmas message is one of light in the darkness and hope for the world, in the person of Jesus Christ, God’s gift to us – his presence - and how much do we need that this year! God wants us to know that he shares in our suffering as well as our joy and he wants to bring joy and hope through the message of His son. We will be offering a number of ways of celebrating Christmas to the community over the coming weeks: 9 lessons & Carols Service – Sunday 13th December We will be pre-recording our Carol service this year in order that as many people as possible will be able to access it by watching it online. We are delighted that a number of local community groups have offered to take part including BBH Football Club, Shelley and Tanbridge Schools, One Stop, Tesco and the local councillors. Simply go to our Facebook page to find the link and enjoy spotting familiar faces from BBH! Advent Calendar Trail – throughout December Each day during December join us around the village as the Christmas Nativity story will be revealed in a new window from the 1st - 24th December. Positioned in different homes around Broadbridge Heath will be 24 different advent calendar-style window displays. See if you can spot them all! Maps will be available on our Facebook page, St. John’s church website and the church notice board. Christingle – Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd December We would like to offer the opportunity to either make a Christingle at home, or to use the space in our church hall to build your own. On Monday and Tuesday 21st and 22nd December from 10am until 12 we will be handing out Christingle kits from the church building to either take away or to make in church where we will have Christmas carols and hopefully mince pies – provided restrictions are lifted by then. I want to wish you and your family all the best for a joy-filled Christmas and a hopeful New Year From Revd. Mark Lavender and all at St John’s Church. Broadbridge Heath. Praying for Our Local Streets. At St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. If you would like something prayed for, email us: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk This month we are praying for: River Walk, Howard Place, Tilney Drive, Dereham Way, Morton Ave, Rochford Grove, Windrum Close. 11

As you read this, we hope you all continue to keep safe and well during these difficult times. As we moved out of October and into November, our minds shifted away from the autumn colours and leaves towards thinking of what November brings. Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day are very important days in our village calendar. The village Lamppost Poppies were put up at the beginning of November and we hope you agree what a beautiful impact they have in the village as you enter from all roads. With the national restrictions in place, the village Remembrance Service was slightly different this year, but on behalf of BBHPC, a wreath was laid with other village representatives at a small service held by Rev. Mark Lavender at our War Memorial. The Memorial and Flag is a prominent place in the village, and it was great to see it looking so impressive and being chosen this year by many as a place to stop, reflect and pay their respects. For those residents who may be unaware, many roads in the Wickhurst Green development are named after Broadbridge Heath casualties of the two World Wars; on our Memorial are the names of the young men of our village who were sadly lost in those conflicts of the last century (31 from World War I and 8 from World War II). The Lamppost Poppies will remain in place until the end of November. Thank you to village volunteer, Malcom Dickie, for helping our Environment Officer, John Pilkington, in putting them up.

If you use social media, please follow and like our Broadbridge Heath Parish Council Facebook page for village updates and news; if you don’t at present, why not give it a try! Remember our Website wwww.broadbridgheath-pc.gov.uk also holds lots of information. Stay safe, from BBHPC. 12

Can you make a difference? Fun and Breaks is looking for a volunteer in Broadbridge Heath to help support a 10 year old girl to attend a drama group in Horsham. The session is after school on Tuesdays during term time and will hopefully recommence, with safety measures in place, in the new year. During school holidays other activities can take place such as a visit to the park, going for a walk or out for a snack. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age, be willing to have a DBS check and, for this opportunity, they will need to be a car driver. Full training and ongoing support is given and travel expenses are paid. We have volunteers around the county who have built up lovely relationships with children and families and this has made a big difference both to families and volunteer’s lives. Please look at our web pages if you have some time to spare www.westsussex.gov.uk/fab and email fab@westsussex.gov.uk if you would like to know more. This is a specific request but we need volunteers in all areas of the county.

News from your Horsham District Councillors in Broadbridge Heath We hope that you have all been keeping safe and well in what continues to be a very difficult year for many. We would like to say a huge thank you to the community hubs for their continued support for residents struggling to access food and medical supplies due to needing to self-isolate. If you or your business are struggling financially at this time, please go to the HDC website (Horsham.gov.uk) to find out about, and apply for, the range of support they can offer. The Local Plan continues to be a key focus at HDC, with the Cabinet expected to set out their preferred developments when they meet in January. This will then come to full council to be voted on in February. As you may well be aware, the Rookwood proposal has been particularly controversial, and we are very grateful to all of you who have written to us with your views on this and other proposed sites. As a result of concerns raised by residents, a revised proposal for Rookwood has been produced. Details of this have been reported in the local press and you can also find a summary of the changes by the Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture here: https:// www.horsham.gov.uk/news/2020/10/rookwood-wildlife-and-open-spaces-put-atthe-heart-of-a-new-alternative-plan. In the last year, more than ever, we have all become very aware of just how important our green spaces are. Rookwood is a green lung for the Horsham community, and we are very concerned about the impact its irreversible loss would have on residents as well as the ecological impact. No decisions have yet been made so please keep making your views clear to the relevant cabinet members, especially Claire Vickers, Cabinet member for Planning and Development (Claire.vickers@horsham.gov.uk) and Jonathan Chowen, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture (Jonathan.chowen@horsham.gov.uk). If you are interested in becoming more involved in the Rookwood campaign, then please visit the Keep Rookwood Green page (https://www.keeprookwoodgreen.org/) to find out more and sign a petition. We wish you all a very safe and happy Christmas and New Year. Cllr Louise Potter – louise.potter@horsham.gov.uk Cllr Matthew Allen – matthew.allen@horsham.gov.uk

MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

This year has not been at all easy, although many people have at least found some positive aspects to our current situation. Christmas is now looming, probably the biggest family event of the year, and many are finding this lockdown harder than the first due to the cold dark days and not knowing what restrictions might be in place over the festive period. So what would my advice be? The first lockdown gave many of my clients some valuable time to re-evaluate their lives. Now might be the ideal time to set some projects and targets for yourself. If you have struggled with mental health over this period, you are certainly not alone, and setting goals can help to focus the mind on the positives rather than the negatives. Regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact: it relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood*. So include some exercise goals, you don’t have to run the marathon, it could be as simple as a daily walk.

Also, it's vital to have your goal written down and clearly defined. As Pablo Picasso said, "Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success." So take this time to set down targets for next year. Make sure these goals are achievable regardless of which restrictions might still be in place from time to time. If you need our help please ask. *helpguide.org Karen MacDonald is an independent financial adviser with Monetary Solutions ( www.monetarysolutions.co.uk ).
