World Thinking Day Celebration

World Thinking Day is celebrated on 22nd February every year by Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Leaders to think of our sisters in guiding across the world on the anniversary of our founders Lord and Lady Baden Powell’s birthday. This year’s celebration had a pancake twist! We started our celebration with an action story which explained to the girls why we celebrate World Thinking Day. The girls were then randomly arranged into mixed section groups for pancake tossing relay races. The first race just had one toss, the second 2 tosses and the third race each girl needed to toss the pancake 3 times. The Rainbows were very confident and led the Brownies and Guides. All the girls had an opportunity to taste pancakes before joining in a circle to sing a few traditional guiding songs and renew our guiding promises. We finished our celebration by each section singing their closing song: Goodbye Rainbows, Brownie bells and the Guides and Leaders finished with Taps.

Our waiting list for Rainbows and Brownies continues to grow at an alarming rate. If you can spare an hour or 2 a week or are willing to help behind the scenes with admin etc. we would love to hear from you. For more information regarding volunteering please contact: Sarah Little Clemsfold District Commissioner ggclemsfold@gmail.com or visit girlguiding.org.uk. For girls to join please visit girlguiding.org.uk ================================================================= TOASTIES YOUTH CLUB. Needs adult volunteers to help run the club. No experience needed. Friday evenings: 6pm to 8.30pm (term time only). DBS check will be done. Contact: Donna Puttick. email: donna.puttick@horshamyouth.org.uk www.4theyouth.org.uk 3

The Broadbridge Heath Community Speedwatch group was created to address the issue of speeding within the village. Support for the scheme, both on-line and on the streets, has been overwhelmingly positive. Community Speedwatch (CSW) is a national initiative where active members of local communities join with the support of the Police to monitor speeds of vehicles using speed detection devices. Vehicles exceeding the speed limit are referred to the Police with the aim of educating drivers to reduce their speeds. In cases where education is blatantly ignored and evidence of repeat or excessive offences is collated (even across county borders), enforcement and prosecution follow.

In conjunction with Sussex Police, eleven locations across the whole village, have now been assessed and approved for speed monitoring. These locations were all identified by residents as areas of concern for speeding, and include the new A281 dual carriageway, roads around Shelley School, and “rat-run” routes out of the village. Suggestions for additional sites are always welcome. We now need more volunteers to join the scheme, so that we can proactively reduce the issue of speeding through our village. If you would like more information, please visit the scheme website where you can also sign up to the village CSW scheme – www.communityspeedwatch.org bbhspeedwatch@gmail.com —————————————–————————————-————————————

Letters to the Editor Philip Turner writes: I should like to follow up on the comments of both Sandra and Ken in last month’s BBH Mag regarding the roadworks at Broadbridge Heath and the results we are experiencing to date. The works were started last April and were supposed to have been completed by end of October, 2020. There is still no sign of this happening and we are now in mid March. What I have seen so far is that traffic on what was the bypass and is now the new A264 has increased enormously as has the noise and air pollution. Plus our daily frustration with continuing and increasing speed and reckless driving which I have complained about to our police and local MP’s several times but no action has been taken. I understand the master plan was to combine both old and new parts of the village (Wickhurst Green) but from what I can see, the old and new sections are now even further apart than they were prior to the works being started. In fact, at WG we are completely cut off from the old village, and from the Tesco store, from the retail park and from the leisure centre. I could see no sense in the plan when it was devised back in 2008-2009 when the population of this village was a fraction of what it is today and I see even less sense in it now, 10 months later. But in the bigger picture, we now have a much more pressing and important issue to address, Coronavirus. Which makes our discontent with the roadworks small by comparison. 5

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com STOOLBALL Broadbridge Heath’s Junior Stoolball Academy will be during the 2020 summer holidays. It is open to boys and girls from Reception upwards who want to learn more about this marvellous, action packed game. The children will be taught by qualified coaches and learn how to bat, bowl and field. The Venue: Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club. The Dates: Wednesday 5th, 12th & 19st August 2020 The Time: 10.00am to 11.30am The Cost: £3.00 per session For further information or to book your place please contact Sally Booker at sallybooker1@btinternet.com BOWLS The winter season for Bowls will soon be over but our Bowls Club remains open in the summer. In fact this is a great time to "get into" the game as the membership fee is waived for newcomers over the summer until the winter season starts in September. This means you can play for over four months at members rates - plenty of time to test the waters. Why not try our Bowls4Fun evenings? They are every Wednesday (Sept-Apr) or Tuesday (late Apr to Sept), from 6.45 pm to 9:30 p.m. It is a relaxed evening with music playing on the rinks. You don't need any special clothes or shoes. We provide the bowls and you can play in socks until you decide if bowls if for you. Everybody is entitled to 2 free evenings (thereafter £3.50 until end of Summer). Bowls can be provided and a qualified coach is on hand to go through the basics with you. Many of our players started bowls in this way, went on to join the club and now regularly play in leagues and matches. Others just come to Bowls4Fun for an enjoyable social night out/to try something a bit different and they are just as welcome. We have a junior section which meets at 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning, - again, bowls can be provided and coaches are on hand to guide the youngsters (minimum age 8 years). One of our Juniors, James Loader, recently won the the EYBDS County School of Excellence finals! We have a regular social side to the Club as well, with over 60 people attending the Quiz Night in February, with a race night and more events planned on a monthly basis. So, there really is something for everyone!! Come and try for yourself this excellent local facility with members restaurant and bar. You can find us next door to the Bridge Leisure Centre at the back of the Tesco car park. Contact: horshamindoorbowls@gmail.com for further information. 6

CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB

http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp Since the last edition of the village magazine, the remains of the fallen oak tree have now all gone & the replacement mobile cricket cage has been ordered; with any luck it will be in place prior to the season starting. Although with the world in turmoil due to the outbreak of Coronavirus & the cancellation of sporting activities all over the UK, who knows when the season will actually start. Our league season is due to get underway on Saturday 2nd May; prior to that we have two friendlies schedule for the 18th & 25th April. Only time will tell whether these will actually be able to go ahead. We will start pre-season ground preparation in the next few weeks, assuming the weather will allow us to get out on the ground; the top common is still very wet from all the rain we have had this winter, which might delay us getting equipment on to it. In preparation to get playing, we are still continuing with our indoor nets at the Hove Country Ground indoor school – we have two session left; Friday 20th March & 3rd April. If anyone fancies a run out with a view to restarting their cricketing activities, then please call our Chairman, Tim Wells, on 07740101983. All new players, of any ability, are more than welcome. The Club have continued to punch about their weight in the indoor league this year; with all matches now played, they have finished joint top with Three Bridges. A playoff to see who will be crowned champions wasn’t able to go ahead, so it will now be planned for after the summer season. The eventual champions will go on to play in the Sussex-wide indoor finals. Tim Wells

Parish Point of View Mark Lavender. The new Vicar. St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Firstly, I would like to thank all at St John’s for the welcome my family and I have received each time we have ‘popped over’ to Broadbridge Heath in advance of moving in April. From the impressive baking to the painting and decorating of the vicarage we have really felt part of the church even before being licensed. We are moving from Orpington, on the edge of London, where we have lived for the past 4 years and where I have served as Curate at St Paul’s Crofton. Before that we were part of St Matt’s church in Tunbridge Wells for 8 years and going back further we attended an Ichthus congregation in central London. I trained for ministry at Ridley Hall in Cambridge but prior to that I was a Head of Science in secondary schools for 10 years. Ali, my wife, is a qualified speech and language therapist, our daughter Hannah is currently studying at Sheffield University and our son, Nathan is just finishing studying music at the Brit School in Croydon. As a family we love board games, cinema and camping. Individually, some of us (you’ll have to work out who!) enjoy parkrun, good wine, reading, curries and live music. We are passionate about experiencing God in worship and are excited at the opportunity to do that with all at St John’s. I look forward to serving the parish of Broadbridge Heath as vicar and helping to enable the community in the ever-expanding village so that we can grow in love for one another and support one another, particularly in the current climate of uncertainty around the coronavirus. Please know that we will be praying for you, for God’s goodness to break into our everyday lives for all who seek Him, to find Him. God is Good. Mark Lavender (The new vicar of St John’s church, Broadbridge Heath) ——————————— Praying for Our Local Streets. At St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. If you would like something prayed for, email us: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk This month we are praying for: Church Lane, Wickhurst Lane, Castle Road, Oak Lane, Onslow Walk, Weston Avenue, Bentley Gardens, Caffyn Place, Gratwick End.

We’ve been having so much fun lately. First, we went to a Group Meeting. This is an annual opportunity to get together with other WIs in our region.

There are displays, showing off each WI’s special skills or interests and time for a good old natter with colleagues we don’t often have a chance to meet. Then there is a speaker. The Group Meetings generally offer something special and this year was no exception. We were entertained by the Dowager Lady Crabtree (pictured right). Her talk, entitled ‘Glad to be Grey’, is a celebration of maturity and the many advantages of getting older. There were tips on how to survive the advancing years, including her suggested cure for insomnia, the answerphone message for all grandparents, how to cope with intimidating antique shop assistants and her hatred of bar-codes. It was hilarious! The following week we enjoyed another excellent speaker at our usual monthly meeting. This time we heard from Ann Kaye who worked at the BBC for many years as a producer, presenter and senior broadcast journalist before going freelance. She set up the first national commercial all-speech radio station (now TalkSport) and also lectures in radio production, media and communication skills. There was plenty of laughter as Ann entertained us with anecdotes (which included a bit of name dropping!) and played us some of her very funny collection of outtakes and radio ‘bloopers’. Laughter really is the best medicine and we have lots more lined up for this year so if you’d like to join in all the fun you can usually find us at St John’s Hall every second Tuesday afternoon - or get in touch to check where else we’ll be in the coming months. You’ll be made very welcome.

“Anyone Fancy a Gin?” – by Fiona Smithers-Green The answer was a resounding 'yes please' at the Broadbridge Bombshells' WI February meeting. We had Helen, one of the founding members of a local gin distillery in Dorking called 'The Gin Kitchen' as our guest speaker. Helen told us the story of how her little business started and grew… Helen and Kate are two friends. Both mums with young kids, and both with day jobs the idea of starting a business was not particularly at the top of their list, but the idea to buy a small still and start to play around with developing their own distinctive gin as a hobby turned into a reality and then into a business opportunity. They met in Kate's kitchen to experiment with different botanicals... the substances which gives gin the distinctive flavour. Usually herbs or spices, but can be anything e.g. citrus peel, lavender or spruce... Helen said there were quite a few failures before their first successful gin was distilled. But by using the failures to work out what was working and what was not, the recipe for their first gin was perfected and the uniquely named Gutsy Monkey Gin was born -distinctively warm, with hints of citrus, ginger and pepper it is truly delicious. Still not necessarily seeing this a business opportunity, and more of a hobby, every costly attention to detail was followed in the packaging and presentation of their first gin, it is contained in beautiful but expensive white bottles with hand painted original designs in place of labels, and a poem to describe the attributes of the gin on the reverse. As all the hard work had been done exclusively in Kate's kitchen, the name for their venture became 'The Gin Kitchen' in its early existence was now up and running, and a quality brand was in its infancy. The next step was to see if the gin would sell, so the friends offered their gin to their local pub who loved it and decided to buy a few bottles... from these small beginnings the business started to grow, they moved premises into the shed in the garden of their local pub, and then once again into the premises they are currently operating from. Kate gave up her job and now works full time in the business and they now employ 5 people. A huge positive for business is the friends' unique cheeky way of marketing their product which has always paid off... a visit to Fortnum and Mason gave them a big break when they took a bottle of Gutsy Monkey for the cellar manager to try. He loved it and wanted to make it 'Spirit of the Month' but they had no way of meeting the amount of bottles needed as their still was too small. As luck would have it their next gin 'Dancing Dragonfly' was starting production and he liked this one just as much, it became 'Spirit of the Month' and was the best selling of all time. Another two gins followed: The Ginger Cat Gin and Blushing Monkey Pin Gin. Check out our website and Facebook page for details of meetings. MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath

Keep calm and carry on Well just as things began to settle down after Brexit the coronavirus hit. With a flood of information the truth is vague and the markets in crisis because they have no idea how it's going to affect us. I’ve been amazed by the panic buying but one of the best marketing tools I have seen this week is a stationery company giving out sanitiser with every order.

So our advice would be: The current dip in the financial market, caused by the virus, should stabilise when normal life is resumed. But no one knows what's going to happen in the markets. Many previous disasters have had similar looking knock-on effects, for example 9/11 caused the Dow Jones to plummet following the attack, but it rebounded quickly. There was a similar story with the Gulf war: in October 1990 the FTSE tumbled but soon increased again by March 1991. When the markets fall they can also rebound within days: as I am writing this (14th March) the market has fallen radically within the last week but the Dow Jones surged nearly 200 points yesterday (not back to its original high, but still a big increase for one day). Therefore, investors have to be careful when markets tumble: if they take money out of the market and then a big increase occurs they will lose out. This applies equally to switches and transfers, most will take funds out of the market for a few days until they are completed. So, our advice is always to sit tight. Also, the last few weeks have reminded us that we never know what's around the corner and the importance of planning ahead as markets can turn very quickly. At worrying times like this, financial advice can be essential. The most important role for us is being a sounding board, “a problem shared is a problem halved”. So if you would like to review your investment please give us a call. We offer a free without obligation consultation. Karen MacDonald is an independent financial adviser with Monetary Solutions (www.monetarysolutions.co.uk). To discuss the above or any other financial matter, please call us on 01403 288078 or email karen@monetarysolutions.co.uk

The Parish Council has been sponsoring an Age UK Village Agent for some time and her services to the village are greatly appreciated. Age UK Horsham District will be providing advice and support to anyone over the age of 50. Please contact them on 01403 260560. We will endeavour to continue to provide our Parish Council services to the community, and to help the residents of Broadbridge Heath to stay safe during these unusual, evolving times. These are uncertain and difficult times and our thoughts are with those affected and all the people working tirelessly to care for them.
