ILLUMINATION

WELCOME! Welcome to ILLUMINATION, a night of light, changing perspectives, and changing lives, benefitting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh. Tonight’s extraordinary event could not happen without the efforts of our board of directors, host committee, young professional groups, staff, volunteers, and LUXE Creative. Our sponsors and contributors have also made this evening possible. So much of what you see has been generously donated, including time, talent, and services. Funds raised tonight will directly support our vital one-to-one mentoring programs for children throughout Allegheny, Washington, and Greene counties. All of us at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh are excited, optimistic, and proud of our accomplishments. We continue to be recognized as one of the leading agencies among 350 affiliates nationwide In 2016, we served a record 1,483 children and we are on target to reach an additional 100 children for 2017. Despite our progress, the demand for our services exceeds our capacity, with a waiting list of more than 250 children seeking mentors. Your support tonight and throughout the year enables us to expand our services to reach more kids in need without compromising our superior quality. The true signs of our success lie in the stories of individual matches, like Deji and Jordon who will speak at tonight’s event. We are grateful to our board, staff, volunteers, families, and donors for helping us change lives for the better, forever. With your assistance and crucial support, we can accomplish so much. We thank you for entrusting us with the privilege and responsibility of such significant and essential work. Your generosity will impact the future of the Pittsburgh region for generations to come.

ABOUT BBBSPGH Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh has been recognized as the premier mentoring organization in the region for over 50 years. Thousands of children have been matched with responsible, caring adult mentors since 1965. The BBBS program unites staff, volunteer mentors, and parents and guardians, who work together to deter problematic behaviors in children before they are able to take root. Through role modeling, participatory guidance, and friendship, volunteers spend time with children facing adversity, offering additional consistent and caring support to their lives. Big Brothers Big Sisters enrolls children between the ages of 6 and 13. Once matched, a child may remain in the program until high school graduation, although many of the relationships are so remarkable that they last a lifetime. The children served face enormous challenges within their schools, families, and communities. A large percentage of children reside in high-risk environments where substance abuse, criminal involvement, and school dropout rates are significant. The majority of participants live in single-parent homes. The agency offers three core programs: Community-Based, Site-Based, and mentor2.0. Each program offers a unique opportunity to change a child’s life for the better, forever. Child safety is the top priority. Professional staff conducts indepth volunteer interviews, rigorous screenings, trainings, and thoughtful pairing of each “Big” and “Little.” The staff also provides ongoing support and supervision of each match to help ensure both the quality and safety of the relationship. Bigs and Littles may attend sporting events, take in a Broadway show, go to the zoo, watch a movie, or any other of the multitude of options that Pittsburgh has to offer. But it is not the activity that is important. Whether a match is cheering on a Pittsburgh sports team, swimming in a local pool, or simply running errands, what matters most is becoming a supportive friend for a child—someone to share the moments that spark imagination, wonder, and joy.

OUR STORY

BIG BROTHER JOHN & LITTLE BROTHER VINNY This match story began more than 40 years ago, when John’s father died when he was 7 years old. Seeking a father figure for John, his mother found him a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters. He was matched with Jim, and to this day, talks about the bond they formed and his fond memories of their relationship. John recognized the powerful impact of mentoring, and as an adult, he decided to provide a similar experience to a young boy who also lost his father. In 2014, John was matched with 8-year-old Vinny, whose father had passed away several years beforehand. Vinny’s mom was looking for what John’s mother had sought for her young son—a male role model who would offer friendship, support, and guidance. From the beginning, the relationship between John and Vinny was relaxed and easygoing. They quickly felt a bond over their similar past and they also realized that their families are originally from the same village in Italy! While John and Vinny do a lot of ordinary things together—playing basketball at the YMCA, visiting a local park, and attending BBBS events—their relationship is anything but ordinary. A significant loss in their past brought them together, but their focus is on the future. Someday, Vinny hopes to pay it forward. Youth in our community, especially young boys, need strong mentors like John. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or know a positive male role model, please visit www.bbbspgh.org/beabig.
