The Top Ten Scams in the
Credit Card Interest Rates/Debt Reduction Services
Consumers are being inundated with telephone calls with a guarantee of lowering their credit card interest rates. Consumers are deceived into thinking it is their credit card company or bank calling when it is not. These are for profit companies calling who will charge you a high upfront fee for something that they cannot guarantee. Consumers are also turning to debt reduction services for assistance in these hard economic times. These companies often require upfront fees, make promises that are too good to be true, will only deal by telephone or internet and insist that you make immediate decisions or provide financial information before services and fees are discussed.

Job Hunter Scams/Mystery Shopping Scams/ Work At Home Scams
Scams targeting job hunters vary and include attempts to gain access to personal information such as bank account and Social Insurance Numbers and require a fee in order to be considered for the job. Two of the most popular schemes are work at home offers and mystery shopping. Some work from home schemes promise to teach the secrets to making money online, others claim you can make money assembling items at home. The company asks for an upfront fee for information or products. In another scenario the consumers thought they could make some extra money by becoming a mystery shopper and evaluating the customer service of various stores. The victim is asked to evaluate their shopping experience at a few stores as well as a money wiring service such as Western Union or MoneyGram by wiring money back to the scammers. A seemingly real looking cheque is supposed to cover the costs, but ends up being a fake. The victim is out hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

Phishing, Vishing and Smishing
You may receive an email that looks like it is from an organization you know such as your bank. The message may say that there is a problem with your account or that your account information has to be updated. You will be asked to click on a link and then be transferred to a very professional looking website where personal identity information and bank account information will be asked for. Vishing is when a consumer is contacted by telephone and asked to call a toll free number. When the consumer calls the toll free number they are asked to punch in a credit card number or provide personal information. Smishing is when a text message is received on a cell phone or other mobile device. The key common tactic is to get the consumer to either fill in personal information or download malicious software on to a computer to compromise security and put your identity and money at risk.

Lottery/Sweepstakes Scams
We have all received letters and emails saying that we have won millions of dollars in a lottery or sweepstakes located outside of Canada. Sometimes you have to send money upfront in order to purchase tickets, and sometimes you have to provide personal identity information, your bank account or credit card information. The newest scheme involves receiving a cheque that represents a portion of the total winnings. In order to get the rest, the victim has to deposit the cheque and then wire thousands of dollars back to the scammers supposedly to cover taxes or other bogus fees. The victim wires the money, but the prize never arrives.

Vacation Scams
Typically the consumer receives a telephone call or email informing them that they have won a “free” trip and must claim their prize immediately. Some consumers are also being contacted about a travel club membership supposedly worth hundreds of dollars. In both scenarios the consumer is asked to pay an upfront fee. Don’t be fooled by a professional looking website, mailer, emails, seminars or presentations. Few legitimate businesses can afford to give away products or services of real value or substantially undercut other companies’ prices. Ask for all details in writing including the terms, conditions and costs associated with the travel so that you can make an informed decision.

Cheque Overpayment
A scammer contacts a seller to purchase goods or services, which they have found, advertised on classified sites like Kijiji or Craigslist. The scammer sends payment in excess of what was agreed upon and advises the seller to deposit and return the excess funds back to the scammer or a third party. By the time the deposited payment is returned as counterfeit or stolen and charges back to the seller’s account, the scammer has received the funds and merchandise. Businesses as well can be the victim of this scam. The scammer will contact the business and want to purchase a large amount of merchandise and offer to pay by cheque or credit card. Again the scammer pays a higher amount and asks the business to wire back the overage.

Consumers and businesses have searched online and have come across companies that are willing to lend money no matter what your credit rating. If so, does it also state that it would only cost you a small fee to do this? Before you jump up and send in that processing fee or security deposit, be warned that this is likely a scam and advance fee loans are illegal in Canada. You should never have to pay a cash advance for a loan. Many people have filled out the application for their loan, wired their hard earned money and then have never heard back from the company. Now, the consumer is out the anticipated “pre-approved” loan but also the processing fee as well.

Emergency Scams: Also known as the grandparent or friends scam.
The victim receives a distressing telephone call or an email from a friend or family member claiming that they have gotten into trouble with the law or have been robbed while on vacation. The victim is then asked to wire thousands of dollars for bail, lawyers fees or to replace money or items stolen. If you have been a target or victim of this scam you should report it to the Canadian AntiFraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Quick Tips • Always check with the BBB for a report on a company that you are considering doing business with. • Do not provide your credit card or bank account number to any unknown firm. • Control your information-limit what information you provide on a social networking website. • Always shred any unwanted documents, unsolicited mail or credit card applications that contain personal information. • Do not open email attachments or click on links from any unknown person or company. • Be cautious of companies or individuals who offer you get rich quick investment schemes.
A perennial problem that has plagued businesses for decades involves deceptive sales for directories. Commonly the scammer will call the business claiming they just want to update the company’s entry in an online directory or the scammer might lie about being with the Yellow Pages. Businesses across the Maritimes have reported receiving a very misleading invoice from a company that looks very much like the legitimate yellow pages. This invoice is not a bill but a solicitation for a listing in an alternative business directory. The business is later billed hundreds of dollars for listing services they didn’t agree to or for ads which they thought would be in the Yellow Pages. Be very wary of the information that you give out over the telephone and read all invoices carefully before agreeing to anything or simply paying for it.
• If you have won a prize, do not send money to the promoter for taxes or other fees.
Home improvements may be on your agenda, but finding a contractor with reasonable costs and availability may be a challenge. During the spring thaw, unscrupulous and unqualified people often show up to homes with offers to do everything from landscaping to roofing to chimney cleaning. Some may offer to pave your driveway with leftover materials, or even remodel your home for a low price. These fly-by-night operators use high-pressure sales tactics and in some cases even frighten consumers into expensive, unnecessary work. Often times the work is shoddy and consumers end up paying legitimate companies to redo the work.
• Never agree to wire money back to a firm or individual if they have overpaid you for a good or service.

• Never agree to provide an upfront fee for a “guaranteed” loan. • Before signing anything, read it carefully. • Never let your debit or credit card out of your sight when conducting a transaction at point of sale. • Carry only the identification that you need. Put other identification such as Social Insurance Number, birth certificate and passport in a safe place.

5 Red Flags You Are Being Scammed
S
cams and frauds take many forms and shapes, but all fraudulent activities have the same purpose – to take advantage of the victum. While many frauds and scans use creative and innovative strategies and approaches to rip people off, most of them fundamentally use the same tactics. In most of the case of fraud and scams that are reported to the Better Business Bureau one or many of the following five red flags could have been an indicator to the victim that they were about to be ripped off.
1 – Limited Opportunity
Many frauds are designed to get you to feel like you are getting a great deal or are part of an exclusive “club.” By playing up the “one time only” or “limited time only” opportunity, scammers hope to force you into quickly making a decision to take advantage of the great deal without having time to do your research or think about the legitimacy of the opportunity.
Protect Yourself – Don’t let the “limited time” opportunity ever be your reason for spending money. Always take the time to comparison shop and do your research on the opportunity and person pitching it, before spending your money.
2 – Unsolicited Contact
In most circumstances the con artist will come to you first with the intent of pitching some type of opportunity or coaxing you into divulging personal or financial information. Unsolicited contact may come in the form of a mailed letter, a fax, a phone call or voice message, an email, a link on a website or via an online social networking site.
Protect Yourself – Always be wary of situations in which someone is offering you an opportunity that you did not personally seek out yourself, whether by mail, fax, phone, email or via online social networking.
4 – Money Transfers Required
A large majority of scans contain scenarios in which cheques will be written and money must be wired or transferred to another party. Lotto, prize winning and employment scams often require that the victim cash a cheque or transfer money under their name to the con artist. Protect Yourself – Know that wire transfers are untraceable, so if the opportunity is a scam you will lose your money and it will not be found. Be wary of scenarios in which you are asked to cash a cheque and return a partial payment for any reason.
5 – Something Doesn’t Feel Right
This is probably the most important and most often overlooked red flag when it comes to frauds and scams. Almost everyone who becomes a victim at some point in the process of being scammed disregarded his or her gut feeling that something was off or wrong with the situation. Protect Yourself – Use common sense and listen to your gut instinct– it is usually correct!
3 – Personal Information Required
There are very few situation in which personal information such as your name, address, birthday, Social Insurance Number (SIN), credit card numbers, banking information, Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) or passwords are ever legitimately required by a business or organization.
Protect Yourself – Never give out any of your personal information (especially your SIN, PIN account numbers and passwords) to anyone, unless you have a personal reason to initiate a conversation in which such information is required. Always pay attention to what information you are giving out, and ensure you are giving it to a trusted party with the appropriate security and protective measures in place to store it.
