Harmonizing Perspectives: Inspiring Connection Through Land-Based Learning (The Glen, Winter 2024)

At BVG, an enchanting story unfolds as the lively spirit of our BG's harmonizes with the whispers of the beloved land and valley that surround us. It tells a special tale of stewardship that goes beyond our classroom walls.

Influenced by Indigenous perspectives, our preschoolers navigate a landscape where reverence for the land is fundamental. They see its teachings as priceless treasures, fostering a commitment to safeguard and nurture. As these young explorers interact with the natural world, their connection deepens, and the roots of stewardship firmly anchor.

Simple acts of kindness mark milestones in their educational journey, from feeding birds to pondering why our valley is their chosen haven. Winter Solstice brings a celebration where preschoolers engage in cultural rituals and share a song about Nanabazhoo, created by Gookomis Dr. Jagcue Lavalle — shared with us from Dr. Hopi. While learning each note and learning to use Anishinaabemowin, the Ojibwe language, we respectfully used Dr. Hopi's cherished zhiishiigwan (shakers) curated from across the globe. This continued infusion of compassion and the boundless curiosity of preschoolers magically enriches our learning experience and connects us to something bigger.

Guided by a diverse and culturally responsive curriculum, our little learners embark on a journey of discovery, seamlessly integrating cultural insights into their education. They tread lightly on the land, leaving no tracks while expressing gratitude to Mother Earth. In this expansive outdoor classroom, autonomy thrives, natural intuition ignites, and the understanding of a greater interconnectedness takes shape.

In a realm where curiosity and kindness know no bounds, we recognize the importance of listening to history, appreciating the present, and safeguarding the future. As we celebrate our preschoolers' remarkable journey, a question arises: How can we empower the next generation to embrace land-based learning and Indigenous perspectives, ensuring a legacy of sustainability, understanding, and continued reconciliation for generations to come?
