Distributing the rider’s weight: Under the rider’s weight the air cushions continually mould to mirror the horses individual conformation and working muscles. All Bates Saddles feature a generous panel, designed to ensure a large “footprint” on the horse’s back, maximising the weight bearing surface of the saddle and resulting in a reduction in pressure per sq cm/inch and increased comfort for the horse. Coupled with a wide and even chamber, the performance panels support the horse’s working muscles and maximises movement in the shoulder area.
Features a rigid head to maintain clearance over your horse’s wither, whilst possessing lateral flexion to work with your horse’s muscular movement with every stride. The lateral flexion, combined with the unique anatomic shaping of the tree, ensures the saddle does not impede on the horse’s muscles in work. Precision engineered to be lightweight, symmetrical and ultra durable the Elastiflex tree is guaranteed against breakage for the lifetime of the saddle, deemed to be 10 years.

The design registered stirrup bar removes at least one thickness of leather from under your thigh, ensuring even closer contact and maximising your comfort. Bates Stirrup Leathers have been developed with rider comfort and safety in mind. They are extremely supple and slimline, featuring a stainless steel riveted buckle design, reducing the thickness of leather under the rider’s leg, eliminating any interference, while the webbing core ensures they will not stretch and cause unevenness. Bates Stirrup Leathers will perfectly match your Bates Saddle. Also available with contrast stitching to match the Bates Elevation range
Bates Stock Stirrup Leathers are designed to complement the Bates Kimberley Saddles and feature the customary 1 1/4 inch width with a superior webbing core for added strength. A traditional sleeve enables riders to ride with the buckle near the stirrup iron.
Bates Webbers are revolutionary stirrup straps made without buckles to reduce the lump under the rider’s thigh and provide closer contact to the horse. The single thickness under the leg removes excess bulk and interference, facilitating the accurate delivery of leg aids. Made in luxurious Bates leather to match your Bates saddle, with a webbing core to ensure they will not stretch and cause unevenness.

Bates saddles, featuring the revolutionary EASY-CHANGE™ Fit Solution, offer the highest flexibility for achieving an optimal fit and the ultimate performance for your horse.
After the initial saddle fit, we recommend that you have the fit of your saddle checked within the first three months, as it will settle in the head during the initial riding period, as is standard with all new saddles. Following this initial settling in period, your saddle fit should then be assessed every six months throughout your saddle’s life to ensure the saddle continues to fit correctly as your horse changes shape according to its age, level of fitness and work programme.
Checking for sufficient clearance
It’s always recommended that you seek professional advice on your horse’s saddle fit, where possible. However, the following information can assist you in not only assessing your saddle fit, but understanding when simple adjustments should be made. In order to check the clearance, bearing and balance of a saddle it is important that the saddle is initially positioned correctly.
Your saddle should bear evenly on your horse’s back, providing a close fit. Run your hand between the horse and the panel of the saddle to check for even bearing. If your saddle features the CAIR® Cushion System it’s important that a rider sits in the saddle to check the bearing, as the air panels become dynamic under the rider’s weight.
Ensure your horse is standing square and is on level ground. In order to check the clearance, bearing and balance of the saddle, it’s important the saddle is initially positioned correctly. Locate your horse’s shoulder and check to see that the nail of the saddle is approximately three fingers distance from the edge of your horse’s shoulder.
Check that the deepest part of the saddle is central and level to ensure perfect saddle balance.

Cari ng f or y our B ates S ad d l e Proper care is crucial to maximising the performance of your Bates saddle. It is a natural product and its life is reliant on maintaining a certain level of moisture.
helping to seal in the moisture and protect your saddle. Bates Leather Cream can also be used to replenish and rejuvenate the moisture content in your saddle, however a leather balsam penetrates deeper into the leather and offers a surface barrier, protecting against wear, water and sweat.
Your saddle should be regularly cleaned, using glycerine saddle soap and a damp cloth or sponge to remove dirt, which may otherwise scratch the surface. Cleaning should always be followed with a rich, wax-based dressing, such as Bates Leather Balsam. We do not recommend the use of oil on your saddle.
Apply your leather balsam or cream heavily in high wear areas, such as the top of the saddle flap where the stirrup leathers will rub. You may apply your dressing to all areas of your saddle that are not suede, including the padded inserts and girth straps.
Prior to riding in your new saddle, it is recommended that you liberally dress your saddle with Bates Leather Balsam, allowing it to soak in overnight. The overnight process ensures maximum penetration into the leather,

Treated in this manner, you will achieve the traditional, rich patina of aged worked leather and can expect years of excellent service from your saddle.
