Frances Farquharson of Invercauld

Frances Lovell Oldham was born in Seattle, and was a direct descendant of George Washington's sister but more about that later. Before the war she was an editor at Harper's Bazaar and came to the UK to be fashion editor of Vogue. She married The Hon James Rodney and later married Captain Charles Gordon. Frances then married Captain Alwyne Farquharson of Invercauld Frances Farquharson was well-known for the innovative outfits she wore to the annual Braemar Gatherings and was one of the first people to understand the design potential of tweed, and she also had a passion for tartan. In the 1950's Frances Farquharson of Invercauld put her very personal stamp on Braemar Castle; upgrading the soft furnishings, decorating many rooms in her favourite shades of pink and yellow that was inspired by her great friend, the surrealist designer Elsa Schiaparelli. So many requests were received to see round the Castle that in the 1960's, Captain Alwyne and Mrs Farquharson decided to open Braemar to the public for the first time. The Castle remained open as an important visitor attraction for the district until 2004. Her entire wardrobe, from pre-war Parisian shoes and evening dresses to the flamboyant tweeds she wore in Scotland, was donated to Aberdeen Art Gallery. Some of

The Kate Whiteman Collection of Jewellery The next 76 lots of jewellery form the major part of the collection of jewellery belonging to the late Kate Whiteman. It is an interesting mixture, covering different styles, periods, countries and jewellers; almost a list of ingredients for a recipe for an interesting collection. The word recipe is appropriate in this instance as Kate was a respected food writer who edited books for the Roux brothers, Raymond Blanc and Pierre Koffman. She was also the author of over thirty cookery books herself. A career of over thirty years covered many food fads and travel was also varied. Her grandmothe,r who was Italian, started off the taste for gastronomic life and when Kate was left a number of pieces of jewellery from her grandmother’s estate this probably started her varied collection of jewellery. The Georgian ruby and diamond ring (lot 109) itself is an attractive piece of period jewellery with added interest of being an intaglio. This was possibly an inherited piece along with the Indian bangles, the princess ring and the other antique pieces. Travel abroad; researching food would bring an interest in Greek and Roman art which was carried through to the pieces by Ilias Lalalounis which are very much inspired by antiquity as well as the two gold coins mounted as brooches. More modern jewellers were favoured as being different and bold in design. Stuart Devlin supplied the family with a number of pieces of silver but there are two interesting items of jewellery from his workshop that show his versatility in materials and design. The long coloured gold chain of the standing figures made in the 1970’s if not instantly recognised as Devlin would in current time

thought to have been inspired by Gormley. Theo Fennell designed and made the novelty brooch of the champagne flute (lot 118) with diamonds for the bubbles. More conventional pieces from his workshop are earrings and bangles set with various gems. Time is always valuable and a good watch is essential; the Jaeger le Coultre “Reverso” (lot 115) would cover day and evening wear as the swivel action has a diamond set face for evening and plain for day wear. Longines, Baume et Mercier, Chopard and Raymond Weil watches also form part of the collection. Kate’s legacy as an author will be around for many years through her books and I am sure her jewellery will be appreciated just as much for the variety, quality and flair.

83 EAA396/12 ILIAS LALALOUNIS - a Greek gold Byzantine bull’s head ring of torque design, composed of a ropetwisted coil with stylised bull’s head to one terminal, stamped indistinctly and with maker’s oval mark Approximate finger size H (UK)/4 (USA), 6.6g Note: Ilias Lalaounis (b. 1920), was born into a family of Goldsmiths and watchmakers, joining the family business, Zolotas, in 1940. As a fourth generation jeweller, Lalaounis has earned a reputation for creating luxurious gold jewellery that offers a unique interpretation of ancient civilisation translated into a modern idiom. Lalaounis’ unique aesthetic is inspired by influences as diverse as the Neolithic, Mycenaean, and Byzantine styles, while his creations are founded on a revival of ancient Greek jewellery techniques. In 1969, Ilias Lalaounis pursued an independent enterprise, and his eponymous company was founded as a separate entity. The new company produced a collection every six months, with each collection consisting of about 150 pieces in both 18 and 22K gold. Lalaounis’s regular use of pure gold helped to distinguish his work, and soon branches were expanded through Europe and in cities throughout the world, including New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong. In 1993, the company’s workshops were moved to new, purpose-built facilities while the building was altered to house a jewellery museum. Today the Ilias Lalaounis Museum’s permanent collection includes over 4000 pieces of jewellery and micro sculptures from over 50 collections designed by the museum’s founder between 1940 and 2000. Although Lalaounis has received many prizes for his art, the most noteworthy honour was bestowed by the French Academy of Fine Arts in 1990; Lalaounis remains the only jeweller ever to be elected as a member of the Academy.

In 1957 he obtained a post at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and studied for a Diploma of Art in gold and silversmithing, after which he spent a two-year fellowship at Columbia University, in the United States. Devlin returned to Australia to teach, but quickly rose to fame in 1964 after winning a competition to design the first decimal coinage in Australia. In 1965, he moved to London and opened a small workshop, in which he adapted and devised new techniques to produce a wide variety of textures and filigree forms. His popularity grew in London’s West End, where he held a prestigious showroom in Conduit Street between 1979 and 1985. Among his most popular commissions, Devlin has designed coins and medals for 36 countries throughout the world, including precious coins for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. In 1982, Devlin was granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment as Goldsmith and Jeweller to Her Majesty the Queen. Devlin was also made Prime Warden of the Goldsmith’s Company (1996-97). Devlin now works in Littlehampton, West Sussex.

The cover engraved ‘’Foaled April 15th 1893 Died Feb 18th 1908, Winner of the Derby St. Leger and Eclipse Stakes, also the Ascot Gold Cup Provenance: Persimmon (18931908) was an exceptional thoroughbred race horse and sire, who held a brief but illustrious reign over the world of British horse racing. Born of the St. Simon progeny, Persimmon was bred and raced by Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (and afterward King Edward VII). Persimmon made his debut at Royal Ascot in the Coventry Stakes (1895), where he also earned the first of what would become a series of racing victories. Persimmon went on to win the Richmond Stakes in that same year, but the pinnacle of the stallion’s career came at the 1896 Epsom Derby, where Persimmon surged forward to beat his rival, St Frusquin, in a thrilling “neck and neck” showdown. This victory acquired additional significance as it was the first horse race ever to be filmed by Robert W. Paul and Birt Acres. Other major

wins included the 1896 St. Leger and Jockey Club Stakes, as well as the 1897 Ascot Gold Cup and Eclipse Stakes. However, Persimmon’s Ascot Gold Cup and Eclipse sweep came with a price- the hard turf in both races led to career-ending injuries in his hocks, at which point he was retired from the track and sent back to the stallion paddocks of Sandringham, where his stud fee was set at 300 guineas. Persimmon continued to achieve success off the racetrack with an impressive stud career, in which he proved a champion sire on four occasions and champion broodmare sire twice. Persimmon’s most outstanding offspring was the extraordinary filly, Sceptre, who won every classic race in 1902, except the Derby. In addition, Persimmon exerted considerable influence in the pedigrees of some American classic winners during the years of World War I. Despite the hazards of transAtlantic shipping during the war, many first-rate breeding animals were imported from England by

American breeders, including Persimmon’s daughters (Lisma, Dreamy II, and Perfect Peach) and sons (All Gold and Out of Reach), as well as his grandson Corcyra. In early January 1908, Persimmon fell and fractured his pelvis and thigh. The stallion never recovered from the injuries incurred in this accident and later died on 18 February 1908, at the relatively early age of fifteen. A life-size bronze statue by Adrian Jones has been erected in his memory at Sandringham, where it continues to inspire and influence the world of equestrian sport. Note: James “Jimmy” McMenemy (18801965) accomplished a prolific football career that spanned over twenty years with Celtic F.C. (19021920) and Partick Thistle F.C. (192023), in which he made 515 appearances, scored 168 goals, and amassed numerous victories and honours. During his time with Celtic F.C., McMenemy was part of the legendary squad that won the 1904 Scottish Cup Final by defeating the Rangers 3-2 (after being down 2-0). In addition, he was a member of the Celtic squad which achieved the impressive performance of winning five consecutive Scottish League championships (between 1905-6 and 1909-10 seasons), and four during the 1914-18 war. Jimmy went on to win an additional five Scottish Cup medals (1907; 1908; 1911; 1912; 1914) before leaving Celtic Park and later collecting another with Partick Thistle in 1921, which remains the club’s one and only Scottish Cup victory. McMenemy scored five goals for the Scotland national team, thus earning the nickname “Napoleon,” while also accumulating seven consecutive Glasgow Charity Cup successes (from 1911-12 till 191718), as well as many Glasgow Cup honours.

The referee ruled that the ball had not gone out of play, even through photographic evidence later showed that the ball had actually crossed the line, and the goal stood. 288 EY337/2 An early silver mounted coconut cup unmarked, the deep coconut shell bowl with engraved armorial sheild, with applied scalloped rim inscribed ‘James Graham obyt 1650’, the interior of bowl silver gilt lined, raised on a knopped stem with spreading foot with scalloped rim 16cm high Note: This cup has been later inscribed in memory of James Graham, 5th Earl and 1st Marquis of Montrose (1612 - 1650). James Graham was an important and now considered rather romantic figure in Scottish 17th century history and after a long and indeed successful involvement in the Covenanting wars was hung in 1650. From 1638 Montrose was an active enforcer of the Covenant and served in the covenanter’s army in the bishops War. In 1640 - 1641 he was imprisoned by the Duke of Argyll. During Scotland’s intervention in the English Civil war James Graham was created Marquis and made Lieutenant General by King Charles. His prowess and brilliant military strategy were to prove of great note and with only a small force (of Royalist and Irish troops) would win six decisive battles between 1644 - 1645. In 1645 with the defeat of King Charles at Naseby, his support would dry out and would flee for sanctuary on the continent. Returning to Scotland in 1650 in support of King Charles II and indeed trying to make his rule a reality, an expedition that would later be disavowed by Charles. Montrose later surrendered himself, in belief of his safety, to Macleod of Assynt but was taken as prisoner to Edinburgh and on the 10th of May 1650 was sentenced to death by Parliament and was hung on the 21st May 1650.

It is now firmly ascribed to James Mitchell. James Mitchell’s marks along with James Welsh are the only maker’s marks in Scotland to include a figure within the punch. It has long been debated what these figures are holding, a bag of coinage, precious metal, or tool of the craft, There seems little doubt it does signify a connection with the craft and trade. One theory for this has always been that Scottish makers would have retailed these types of wares rather than made them, so they would carry the mark of their English maker rather than Scottish retailer. With the rise of specialist candlestick makers south of the border it seems a credible

explanation. However the style, proportion and decoration of these sticks is rather unusual and definitely points to a Scottish design and manufacture. The fluid spiralled shell details to the bases and proportions of the slender stems, while reminiscent of English examples is rather quirky in its designs, so there is little doubt these were made in Scotland rather than just retailed. The placement of the marks to the underside of the plain foot rim in the domed angles is obviously trying to mirror that of English examples but the thin applied foot rim allows little space and the marks are often off struck. While James Ker would be an obvious candidate for retailing English wares (with his family and political connections in London) he is by the same token a very likely candidate to have made them being perhaps Edinburgh’s premier goldsmith of the era. 5. VALUE ADDED TAX

Lyon & Turnbull carries on business with bidders, buyers and all those present in the auction room prior to, or in connection, with a sale on the following General Conditions and on such other terms, conditions and notices as may be referred to herein.

Value Added Tax on the hammer price is imposed by law on all items affixed with an asterisk or double asterisk. Value Added Tax is charged at the appropriate rate prevailing by law at the date of sale and is payable by buyers of relevant lots.

6. PAYMENT

In these Conditions:

(a) pay to us the total amount due in cash or in such other way as is agreed by us. We accept cash, bank transfer (details on request), Switch or Debit Cards and Visa or MasterCard (please note there is a surcharge of 1.5% (VAT included) when using credit cards). We do not accept American Express.

All members of the public on our premises are there at their own risk and must note the lay-out of the accommodation and security arrangements. Accordingly neither the auctioneer nor our employees or agents shall incur liability for death or personal injury (except as required by law by reason of our negligence) or similarly for the safety of the property of persons visiting prior to or at a sale.

(a) "Auctioneer" means the firm of Lyon & Turnbull or its authorised auctioneer, as appropriate; (b) "deliberate forgery” means an imitation made with the intention of deceiving as to authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source but which is unequivocally described in the catalogue as being the work of a particular creator and which, at the date of the sale, had a value materially less than it would have had if it had been in accordance with the description; (c) "hammer price" means the level of bidding reached (at or above any reserve) when the auctioneer brings down the hammer; (d) "terms of consignment" means the stipulated terms and rates of commission on which Lyon & Turnbull accepts instructions from sellers or their agents; (e) "total amount due" means the hammer price in respect of the lot sold together with any premium, Value Added Tax chargeable and any additional charges payable by a defaulting buyer under these Conditions; (f) "sale proceeds" means the net amount due to the seller, being the hammer price of the lot sold less commission at the stated rate, Value Added Tax chargeable and any other amounts due to us by the seller in whatever capacity and however arising; (g) "You", "Your", etc. refer to the buyer as identified in Condition 2. (h) The singular includes the plural and vice versa as appropriate. 2. BIDDING PROCEDURES AND THE BUYER (a) Bidders are required to register their particulars before bidding and to satisfy any security arrangements before entering the auction room to view or bid; (b) the maker of the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer conducting the sale shall be the buyer at the hammer price and any dispute about a bid shall be settled at the auctioneer's absolute discretion. (c) Bidders shall be deemed to act as principals. (d) Once made, no bid may be withdrawn. (e) Our right to bid on behalf of the seller is expressly reserved up to the amount of any reserve and the right to refuse any bid is also reserved. 3. INCREMENTS Bidding increments shall be at the auctioneer’s sole discretion. 4. THE PURCHASE PRICE The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon. Antiques, Jewellery & Silver and Pictures (Not Fine Sales) 17.5%. All other sales (Fine/Special/Collections) 25% up to £25,000 / 20% thereafter. VAT will be charged on the premium at the rate imposed by law.

(2) Any payments by you to us may be applied by us towards any sums owing from you to us on any account whatever without regard to any directions of you or your agent, whether express or implied.

10. COMMISSION BIDS

(2) You shall at your own risk and expense take away any lots that you have purchased and paid for not later than 3 working days following the day of the auction or upon the clearance of any cheque used for payment after which you shall be responsible for any removal, storage and other associated charges.

While prospective buyers are strongly advised to attend the auction and are always responsible for any decision to bid for a particular lot and shall be assumed to have carefully inspected and satisfied themselves as to its condition we shall if so instructed clearly and in writing execute bids on their behalf. Neither the auctioneer or our employees or agents shall be responsible for any failure to do so save where such failure is unreasonable. Where two or more commission bids at the same level are recorded we reserve the right in our absolute discretion to prefer the first bid so made.

(3) No purchase can be claimed or removed until it has been paid for.

11. WARRANTY OF TITLE AND AVAILABILITY

(4) It is the buyer’s responsibility to ascertain collection procedures, particularly if the sale is not being held at our main saleroom.

The seller warrants to the auctioneer and to you that the seller is the true owner of the property consigned or is properly authorised by the true owner to consign it for sale and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims.

7. TITLE AND COLLECTION OF PURCHASES (1) The ownership of any lots purchased shall not pass to you until you have made payment in full to us of the total amount due.

8. REMEDIES FOR NON-PAYMENT OR FAILURE TO COLLECT PURCHASES (1) If any lot is not paid for in full and taken away in accordance with these Conditions or if there is any other breach of these Conditions, we, as agent for the seller and on their behalf, shall at our absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights we may have, be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights and remedies: (a) to proceed against you for damages for breach of contract; (b) to rescind the sale of that lot and/or any other lots sold by us to you; (c) to resell the lot (by auction or private treaty) in which case you shall be responsible for any resulting deficiency in the total amount due (after crediting any part payment and adding any resale costs). Any surplus so arising shall belong to the seller; (d) to remove, store and insure the lot at your expense and, in the case of storage, either at our premises or elsewhere; (e) to charge interest at a rate not exceeding 1.5% per month on the total amount due to the extent it remains unpaid for more than 3 working days after the sale; (f) to retain that or any other lot sold to you until you pay the total amount due; (g) to reject or ignore bids from you or your agent at future auctions or to impose conditions before any such bids shall be accepted; (h) to apply any proceeds of sale of other lots due or in future becoming due to you towards the settlement of the total amount due and to exercise a lien (that is a right to

TERMS OF SALE The seller acknowledges that lots are sold subject to the stipulations of these Conditions in their entirety and on the Terms of Consignment as notified to the consignor at the time of the entry of the lot. 14. STANDARD VENDOR FEES AND CHARGES (Subject to VAT) (1) Commission: 15% of the first £3000 and 10% thereafter is charged on the selling price of each lot (subject to a minimum charge of £30). Loss and damage warranty: 1.5% on value of lots sold. Photography: max £40 mono per lot, max £250 colour. Internet Service: £10 per lot. (2) If a vendor wishes to withdraw a catalogued lot, a withdrawal fee will apply at the auctioneer’s discretion; this will be charged at 10% mid estimate. 15. DESCRIPTIONS AND CONDITION (1) While we seek to describe lots accurately, it may be impractical for us to carry out exhaustive due diligence on each lot. Prospective buyers are given ample opportunities to view and inspect before any sale and they (and any independent experts on their behalf) must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of any description applied to a lot. Prospective buyers also bid on the understanding that, inevitably, representations or statements

by us as to authorship, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or estimated selling price involve matters of opinion. We undertake that any such opinion shall be honestly and reasonably held and accept liability for opinions given negligently or fraudulently. Subject to the foregoing neither we the auctioneer or our employees or agents or the seller accept liability for the correctness of such opinions and all conditions and warranties, whether relating to description, condition or quality of lots, express, implied or statutory, are hereby excluded. This Condition is subject to the next following Condition concerning deliberate forgeries and applies save as provided for in paragraph 6 “information to buyers”. (2) Private treaty sales made under these Conditions are deemed to be sales by auction for purposes of consumer legislation. 16. FORGERIES Notwithstanding the preceding Condition, any Lot which proves to be a deliberate forgery (as defined) may be returned to us by you within 21 days of the auction provided it is in the same condition as when bought, and is accompanied by particulars identifying it from the relevant catalogue description and a written statement of defects. If we are satisfied from the evidence presented that the lot is a deliberate forgery we shall refund the money paid by you for the lot including any buyer's premium provided that (1) if the catalogue description reflected the accepted view of scholars and experts as at the date of sale or (2) you personally are not able to transfer a good and marketable title to us, you shall have no rights under this condition. The right of return provided by this Condition is additional to any right or remedy provided by law or by these Conditions of Sale. GENERAL 17. We shall have the right at our discretion, to refuse admission to our premises or attendance at our auctions by any person. 18 (1) Any right to compensation for losses liabilities and expenses incurred in respect of and as a result of any breach of these Conditions and any exclusions provided by them shall be available to the seller and/or the auctioneer as appropriate. (2). Such rights and exclusions shall extend to and be deemed to be for the benefit of employees and agents of the seller and/or the auctioneer who may themselves enforce them. 19. Any notice to any buyer, seller, bidder or viewer may be given by first class mail in which case it shall be deemed to have been received by the addressee 48 hours after posting. 20. Special terms may be used in catalogue descriptions of particular classes of items in which case the descriptions must be interpreted in accordance with any glossary appearing at the commencement of the catalogue. 21. Any indulgence extended to bidders buyers or sellers by us notwithstanding the strict terms of these Conditions or of the Terms of Consignment shall affect the position at the relevant time only and in respect of that particular concession only; in all other respects these Conditions shall be construed as having full force and effect. 22. Scottish law applies to the interpretation of these Conditions.
