herDaDe Do esPorÃo www.esporao.com history & Philosophy Located in the heart of the Alentejo region, the Herdade do Esporão estate was established in 1267. Having passed through various families and counts of the region, the property has been owned by the Roquette family since 1973. Their first wine was bottled in 1985.

Herdade do Esporão are keen to preserve what is genuine and traditional, but seek to combine this with innovation. At the heart of all their projects is the preservation of the environment and biodiversity.

Wine production is overseen by the well respected and highly experienced winemaker David Baverstock, who is at the forefront of modern Portuguese winemaking. His philosophy is to create authentic and exciting wines, taking full advantage of Portuguese heritage and grape diversity and combining it with a contemporary approach.

Vineyard & climate Herdade do Esporão is characterised by the diversity of its volcanic and schist soils. Warmed by the Alentejo sun, which is tempered by cool Atlantic breezes, the Estate stretches for over 1800 hectares and includes 500 hectares of vineyards and 82 hectares of olive trees.

Sustainable production methods are used throughout and a large area of vineyards is currently being converted to organic production. Currently there are over 200 grape varieties planted at Herdade do Esporão, of which 31 account for 98% of the total production.

monte Velho Meaning ‘Old Mountain’ Monte Velho wines are emblematic wines from Alentejo and are market leaders in Portugal.

herDaDe Do esPorÃo sustainability and Biodiversity Esporão aim to adapt all agricultural activity to organic methods in the next five years. Currently integrated pest management and better agricultural methods are achieved by gathering data from weather stations, soil humidity sensors and using fully automated irrigation systems. There are approximately 100 soil profilers installed to assess the level of water in the soil. Irrigation is then adjusted to cause the plant to experience water stress during the grape’s growth phase, thus achieving lower but higher-quality yields. Herdade do Esporão have also created a manmade dam known as the Caridade dam which further enables effective irrigation systems for the vines and has attracted new wildlife to the estate. There are now over 111 different species of animals on the estate including wild pigs, foxes, deer, corkscrew tails, otters, wild cats, hares, rabbits and a huge variety of birds. experimentation & commitment to indigenous Varieties Esporão was the first wine company in the world to sign the “Countdown 2010” initiative, with one of their commitments being to encourage and protect the cultivation of a wide range of original genetic grape varieties to help discover alternative solutions for the future. Their Ampelographic Field (lab-vineyard) is testament to this commitment. This 9 hectare vineyard is planted with a collection of over 200 Portuguese, and some foreign, grape varieties, which are in danger of becoming extinct. This intense experimentation and collaboration between the winemakers and the viticulturists results in wines such as the ‘Monocastas’ range. The constant trials and research in to how each variety responds in different soils and micro-climates results in very small quantities of unique, high quality single varietal wines being made each vintage. torre do esporão Herdade Esporão’s roots date back to the pre-historic times of megalithic cultures and the Bronze Age. Even during the Roman occupation, the wines of Esporão were exported throughout the Empire.

At the heart of this estate, in the scorching Alentejo heat, lies the Esporão Fortified Enclosure, which includes the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Chapel and a curious fortified gate, with a winding staircase that leads up to the ramparts. The Tower of Esporão is thought to have been built by Morgado Álvaro Mendes de Vasconcelos between 1457 and 1490. The main purpose of such towers had originally been for housing; however above all, they were a symbol of lordship and military power. Today the tower it is a symbol of Esporão.

Verdelho A grape variety rarely seen in Portugal, but extremely well adapted to the terroir of Herdade do Esporão. Aromas of pineapple, peach, white blossom and fine minerality. Aged for 2 months on lees.

Alicante Bouschet Blackcurrant, chocolate and mocha wrapped in earthy aromas.

Robust tannins and persistent finish. Matured 12 months in American oak, followed by 12 months bottle ageing.

Touriga Nacional Late Harvest A rich, complex, concentrated wine produced using Semillon grapes which have been affected by Botrytis Cinerea.

Planted in 1988 it is one of the oldest vineyards of this variety in Alentejo. Orange blossom aroma delicately wrapped in cocoa notes.

Matured 12 months in American oak, followed by 12 months bottle ageing.

Petit Verdot Complex aromas of moss, cigar box and subtle leather. Matured 12 months in American oak, followed by 12 months bottle ageing.

Syrah Aromas of black fruit, cocoa and subtle tobacco notes. Matured 12 months in American oak, followed by 12 months bottle ageing.

QUinta Dos mUrças, Douro, Portugal Assobio ‘Assobio’ means ‘wind that whistles through the valley’.

Assobio Branco

A Douro DOC wine, blended from ‘Old Vines’. Grapes are handpicked and foot trodden in traditional lagares. Matured 12 months in oak, followed by 12 months bottle ageing.

A Douro DOC blend of Viosinho, Rabigato and Gouveio. Citrus aromas with mineral notes on the palate.

Vintage 2011

A Douro DOC blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Tinta Francisca. Aromas of fresh fruit with hints of black cherry.

Produced from a blend of ‘A grade’ grapes (Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Cão), this vintage port is fermented in traditional granite lagares with foot treading. Aromas of dark berry fruit and violets with and elegant palate and velvety finish.

Assobio Tinto

10 Year Old Tawny

A Douro DOC blend of Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional. Aromas of spicy liquorice, cherries and dark chocolate. 20% aged in oak for 6 months.

Harvested from vineyards with an average age of 20 years, only ‘A grade’ grapes are selected. A very complex nose with hints of fig, walnut and a touch of vanilla.

Assobio Rosé

QUinta Dos mUrças www.murcas.com history & Philosophy Documents indicate that Quinta dos Murças existed as early as 1714. In the early 1800’s – 1900’s wine was produced, but in 1950’s wine production advanced significantly under the guidance of the young agronomist José de Freitas Sampaio. He revolutionised the farm’s cultivation and vinification techniques, and introduced the first ‘vinha ao alto’ (vines planted on vertical terraces) in the Douro. Today the farm is run by the family owned Esporão company. David Baverstock, who is at the forefront of modern Portuguese winemaking, oversees the winemaking and aims to take full advantage of the great Douro terroir and grape diversity, and to combine Portuguese tradition with some of the most advanced vinification techniques.

Vineyard & climate The 156 hectare farm (60 hectares planted under vine) contains predominantly indigenous grape varieties, with vines aged from 15-70 years old, and classified as Grade A (the region’s top classification). Stretching along 3.2 km of the right bank of the River Douro in Cima Corgo, the landscape is inhospitable, rough and virtually untameable. Flora shyly sprouts among the rocks resting on stony and schist soils, making the vines less vigorous and verdant than in Baixo Corgo.

The climate is more severe here than in the other Douro sub-regions: 9 months of cold and 3 months of intense heat. The Quinta’s winery is typical of the region with traditional ‘lagares’ for grape treading and fermentation. The winery has undergone complete modernisation, including gravity fed operations for wines such as Assobio.

PerelaDa www.castilloperelada.com history & Philosophy Perelada is one of Spain’s most dynamic wineries. It is still family owned and run, based in the 14th Century Castillo Perelada, in the small town of the same name, in the heart of the Denominació d’Origen Empordà. Perelada is one of Spain’s principal Cava producers, creating premium Cavas in the Alt Penedès region of Northern Spain. They also produce premium still wines in the small Empordà DO – 2,500 hectares, on the Costa Brava, which has become one of the most prestigious DO’s in Spain. Chief Winemaker Delfi Sanahuja produces elegant, exciting and highly acclaimed wines, capturing the essence of the region.

Vineyard & climate Catalonia forms the north-eastern corner of Spain and borders France alongside the Pyrenees mountain range. It includes nine Denominació d’Origen, including DO Penèdes, where Perelada controls 300 hectares of vineyards at high altitude, and the soil and climate are ideally suited to the production of grapes for Cava.

In Empordà, Perelada own 125 hectares within five vineyards: Finca La Garriga, Malaveïna, Garbet, Espolla and Pont de Molins. These vineyards produce exquisite single vineyard wines, as well as the 3 and 5 Fincas wines that offer exceptional value. Within Empordà there are many soil variations, ranging from sandy and gravelly to stony terraces.

cims De Porrera history & Philosophy The Priorat DOCa is situated in the most southern province of Catalonia, Tarragona.

The region was elevated in 2009 to Qualified Designation of Origin (DOCa) status. The only other region with this Classification in Spain is Rioja.

‘Cims’ is Catalan for ‘summits’ which reflects how the vines and winery sit at the summit of the Porrera village. Cims de Porrera wines are still made in the old village co-operative where the facilities have been fully modernised to maximise the full potential of the region’s unique vineyards.

Their focus is to produce only two premium wines which truly reflect the Priorat region.

Vineyard & climate Each vineyard is situated on the steep, rocky slopes above Porrera village at an altitude between 400 and 600 metres. This rugged and steep terrain and the age of the vineyards (between 40 and 100 years old) demands meticulous harvesting by hand. The vineyards are harvested and vinified separately, and the wines remain in their separate tanks until final blending.

The combination of unique black, slate soils, a rich variety of micro-climates and vines more than 100 years old, results in wines that are widely recognised for their exceptional quality.

Oscar Tobía Tinto Reserva

BoDeGas toBÍa www.bodegastobia.com history & Philosophy Bodegas Tobía is a recent newcomer to Rioja. Established in 1994, its founder and moving spirit is Oscar Tobía, who comes from a local family of wine growers based in San Asensio. His aim is to make original and distinctive wines which also respect their origins – Rioja – but with a modern slant. Oscar was the first person in Spain to create a barrel fermented rosé wine. He continues to produce innovative wines which are highly acclaimed and rewarded around the world, and often used as benchmark examples by the Rioja Institute.

Oscar has undertaken several research projects, both on his own behalf and for the benefit of the wider winemaking world; these include the role of micro-oxygenation in winemaking, and the development of ‘smart’ vats where the Carbon Dioxide produced by fermentation is used to pump over the must.

Vineyard & climate La Rioja DOCa is located in the centre of Northern Spain, nestled in the valley of the Ebro and sheltered by two mountain ranges from the cold northerly winds and fierce southerly winds that sweep over the Iberian plateau. The valley has many different soil types, including ferrous, calcareous and alluvial. Bodegas Tobía manage 80 hectares of old, low yielding vineyards, planted in 15 communes across the region. This allows them to create wines of great quality, showing the complexity, originality and essence of Rioja and its indigenous grape varieties.

BoDeGas fontana www.bodegasfontana.com history & Philosophy Bodegas Fontana, owned by the Cantarero Morales family for over 30 years, has been a major contributor in bringing about changes in the area, achieving recognition for Uclés as a new zone with the ‘Designation of Origin’. Jesús Cantarero, the current owner, has brought together a highly experienced, eclectic, multi-national team of wine professionals, including Sam Harrop MW, who produce authentic, contemporary wines of great purity and freshness. The wines offered range from expressive, organically grown varietals to terroir-driven, single-vineyard selections with real depth and complexity.

The team at Fontana works in a truly inter-disciplinary way, integrating every decision from vineyard to market and combining a deep understanding of the Castillian terroirs with a global outlook. Their aim is to produce interesting wines that represent a modern interpretation of the local winegrowing traditions, conveying a true sense of place while always offering outstanding quality and value.

Vineyard & climate The Fontana estates are located in Uclés, the most Northern tip of Castile-La Mancha, an area known for both its fresh, aromatic whites as well as outstanding reds from the Tempranillo grape.

At an altitude of 700-900 meters, the wines of Uclés show the purity and freshness typical of the North with the intensity and ripe, velvety tannins of the Mediterranean. Fontana manages its estates sustainably and as integrated ecosystems, taking advantage of the low levels of disease in this dry, continental climate. No pesticides are used, organic manure is the only fertilizer applied and weed control is done by light, superficial tilling.

Tempranillo Intense aromas of ripe berry fruit and liquorice. Medium-bodied with beautiful balance between fruit concentration, fresh acidity and fine tannins.

Syrah Ripe blackberry aromas, with spicy notes of freshly ground black pepper. Intense fruit, juicy and full-bodied with fine tannins and a refreshing finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon Intense aromas of cassis with refreshing hints of pepper. Fruity and fresh, full-bodied, with firm but fine tannins.

Dominio de Fontana – Vinos de Finca Single-estate wines produced from the 400-hectare estate in Uclés at 700-800m altitude.

Blanco Intense and expressive aromas, combining grassy and gooseberry notes of the Sauvignon Blanc with notes of fennel and white pepper from the Verdejo. Concentrated and textured on the palate, with depth, freshness and a persistent, mineral finish.

Roble Aromas of ripe berries, pepper, spicy notes of clove and a touch of vanilla. A rich, juicy wine with concentrated fruit flavours and long finish.

Crianza Deep garnet colour with powerful, complex aromas combining the ripe berry notes of the Tempranillo with the cassis from the Cabernet Sauvignon. An elegant and sophisticated wine with a velvety texture and great length.

Vendimia Seleccionada Deep garnet colour with aromas of ripe berries and floral, blueberry notes. Elegant, complex wine with round palate, velvety texture and great finish.

BoDeGas fontana

The team at Fontana has an integrative, non-dogmatic understanding of the world of wine. Instead of seeing art and science in opposition, it seeks constant learning and an ever deeper understanding of nature, carefully applying technology where it contributes to more sustainable viticulture and to crafting more authentic and expressive wines.

Mesta Range of estate bottled, organically and sustainably grown single varieties.

D.O. Uclés Created in 2006, the D.O. Uclés is among the newest and smallest quality appellations in Spain, reflecting homogenous growing conditions in its 1,700 hectares of high-altitude vineyards. Located at the most Northern tip of Castile-La Mancha region, the appellation is formed by rolling hills in a beautiful landscape dominated by oak trees and sheltered by mountains and vast pine woods to the North.

The region has a continental climate with temperature variations of over 20°C between day and night. In combination with generally deeper and cooler soils than areas further South, the D.O. Uclés produces expressive wines which combine freshness with silky tannins The appellation follows ambitious environmental policies and is among the first in the world to measure its carbon footprint.

Quinta de Quercus Quinta de Quercus is a single-vineyard wine made from the best parcels of the Quinta de Quercus Estate: the 24.3-ha ‘Camino Las Morras’ and the 20.9-ha ‘Viña Ocaña’. Scattered with centenary oak trees, both parcels are hillside plantings of around 30 year-old Tempranillo vines, farmed sustainably to achieve perfectly balanced wines.

This award-winning wine reflects the vineyard’s 800m altitude in its distinct freshness and elegance, while also displaying excellent concentration, purity and depth.

Verdejo Intense, fresh notes of grass, fennel and white pepper. A crisp wine with excellent balance and slightly mineral finish.

Rosé Pale strawberry colour, with intense, fresh berry aromas and subtle floral notes. Excellent concentration of fruit is balanced by crisp acidity and elegant finish.

Tempranillo Bright ruby red, with aromas of red berries, rosemary and a touch of liquorice. Vibrant and juicy, with round texture and pleasant finish.

Oveja Series The Oveja Series is a ‘dynamic’ range of limited releases. Single bottlings of exciting experiments from the vineyard, showing the potential of the area and grape varieties. Quantities and grape varieties bottled will vary year to year. The sheep on the labels represent the region and its heritage, and are a symbol of Fontana’s honest approach to winemaking.

Quinta de Quercus Quinta de Quercus is a single-vineyard wine made from the hillside plantings of 30 year old Tempranillo.

Its intense nose combines aromas of blackberries, rosemary and hints of spicy cloves. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, its juicy fruit flavours and muscular tannins are perfectly balanced with fine oak complexity and vibrant acidity on the long finish.

A clean, youthful, subtle wine with lovely citrus fruits, white peaches and herbaceous hints. The palate is dry with balanced acidity and a creamy texture. This is a polished, well-structured and elegant wine.

Restrained notes of dark fruits with a hint of chocolate. Rich and fullbodied with a plum fruit and savoury character. The tannins are soft and the acidity is well balanced. Spice and tobacco richness complete the finish.

Clarendelle Rosé Attractive floral nose with aromas of violets, roses, raspberries and strawberries. Dry wine with good intensity of fruit, balanced acidity, creamy texture and an attractive, long finish.

clarenDelle www.clarendelle.com history & Philosophy In 2005, Prince Robert de Luxembourg created the first premium brand of Bordeaux wine: Clarendelle, named in honour of his great-grandfather, Mr Clarence Dillon. Inspired by Haut-Brion and produced by Clarence Dillon Wines, in conjunction with the winemaking team from Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion, Clarendelle is a family of blended wines made from traditional Bordeaux grape varieties. Vineyard & climate The Bordeaux wine region lies in the south west of France, near the Atlantic coast. The vineyards are moderated and heavily influenced by their proximity to the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Gironde estuary. Its mild climate with temperate winters and long warm summers is ideal for making world-class, classically constructed wines. The region has a variety of soils ranging from gravel and clay to limestone and sand. Vines are planted at a density of 3300-5000 vines/hectare.

Yields are on average 55 hl/ha.

The François family came from France to settle in Tuscany in the 18th century. Since then, they have played a vital role in the development of the Tuscan wine industry. In 1924, Castello di Querceto was one of the 33 founding members of the Chianti Classico Consortium. Since 1978, the company has been directed by Alessandro François who ensures that the characteristics and potential of each vineyard are reflected in every wine he produces.

Castello di Querceto is famous for its expressive red wines and offers Chianti wines at all levels which are classic in style, a true reflection of the Sangiovese grape with only a small percentage of Canaiolo and no international varieties. In addition, the range includes two exceptional SuperTuscans, a Vernaccia, traditional method sparkling and an unusually off dry Vin Santo.

Vineyard & climate The vineyards of Castello di Querceto sit at 470 metres above sea level and extend over 190 hectares, of which 60 hectares are planted with vines and 10 hectares with olive trees. Most of the vineyards were planted between 1975 and 1985. The 60 hectares of vineyards are divided into 22 different lots, individually chosen for their specific micro-climatic characteristics. The entire harvest is handpicked and yields are maintained low. Castello di Querceto favour ecologically friendly viticulture methods, opting for very short pruning and thinning out the grapes if necessary. They have a preference for using organic fertilisers and fighting phytopathogens in a natural and integral way.

Morandé produce four distinct ranges – entry level wines that are lively and approachable, through to premium, interesting, creative wines with true varietal characteristics.

Vineyard & climate Morandé constantly seek innovative techniques, such as high-density planting, hitherto unknown in Chile. This method triples the quantity of vines planted compared to a conventional vineyard, which creates competition between the plants and limits their growth. Overall, the same number of kilos per hectare is obtained but a higher quality grape is achieved. Morandé hold strong ethical values manifested in their judicious use of water in irrigation, good agricultural practices and strong social responsibility.

casablanca The main geographical feature of this valley is the influence of the sea which enters from the Pacific Ocean and produces a morning mist which acts as a temperature moderator. This characteristic favours optimal vineyard development, whilst also requiring special management in order to achieve the desired ripeness. The varieties that grow best in this valley are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. maipo This valley has the greatest wine producing tradition in Chile and is famous worldwide. It has a temperate climate with a dry, hot summer, rainfall concentrated between April and September, and is almost frost-free. The soils are alluvial in origin, stony and with good drainage and average fertility. Its climatic conditions favour the development of red wine varieties, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. house of morandé ‘House of Morandé’ is Morandé’s iconic wine from the San Bernardo vineyard in the Maipo Valley and their commitment to excellence is obvious. Maipo

Vigno To reclaim the heritage of its ancient vines and traditions, a group of traditional Vignadores de Carignan have established the first appellation from Chile – dry-farmed, old-vine Carignan, from Maule (the ‘g’ in the ‘Vigno’ signifies ‘Carignan’).

Morandé’s ‘Vigno’, created by Pablo Morandé, is predominantly Carignan, with the addition of some Syrah and Chardonnay, aged for 26 months in new American oak casks. Due to a blend of three different grape varieties from sixty-year-old extremely low yielding vines planted in different soils, at different altitudes and different sun exposure – this wine is outstanding.

history & Philosophy Founded by the three Michelini brothers in 2008 in the Gualtallary area of Tupungato in the Uco Valley, 80 kms south of the city of Mendoza. Vineyard & climate The Zorzal terroir is free draining, rocky, limestone soil, with chalk-streaked stones. Situated at high altitude (1,350 metres above sea-level) the vineyards benefit from bright sunlight, but with cool, clean evening breezes from the Andes to moderate the temperatures and maintain healthy vines.

Low rainfalls and steep slopes require drip irrigation from underground aquifers using the pure waters of the Andes. This desert climate causes the vines to stress and produce small, concentrated berries. Lagarde is one of the oldest and most traditional wineries in Mendoza and one of the founder members of the first DOC of Argentina. Today, third generation family member, Sofia Pescarmona runs the winery, with Juan Roby as winemaker. Lagarde only use their own fruit to offer four ranges of wine from entry level through to their top-tier wines.

Vineyard & climate Lagarde is located in the region known as ‘Zona Alta del Rio Mendoza’ in Luján de Cuyo and is considered the ‘First Growing Zone’, and best region of the country to produce high quality wines.

The first vineyards were planted in 1897 and 1906. Lagarde own 230 hectares all located between 850 and 1071 metres above sea level. 100% of the fruit comes from their own vineyards, which with their ideal altitude, produces wines with purity, freshness, acidity and good tannin extraction.

The soils of the different vineyard areas are a result of the decomposition and disintegration of rocks and minerals from the mountains. The alluvial clay, sand and rock soils are low in organic material, naturally controlling vigor and yield. Lagarde use the pure mountain spring water from the melting snow caps high in the Andes to irrigate, distributed via an elaborate, ancient canal system, which pre-dates the Columbian Incan Empire. Lagarde was the first winery to plant and produce Viognier as a single varietal.

Vineyard & climate The Elephant Hill vineyards enjoy the spoils of a temperate, dry climate and an extended growing season. Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa vineyards have a slightly warmer climate than the coastal sites, perfect for the ripening of Syrah grapes. Cooled by afternoon Pacific Ocean sea breezes, the single vineyard on the Te Awanga coast grows grapes with lively acidity, excellent maturation and ripeness. This moderated climate results in intense flavour development ensuring distinct wines are produced representing the terroir of Te Awanga.

PennY’s hill www.pennyshill.com.au history & Philosophy As the land acquired in 1988 for the establishment of vineyards by Tony & Susie Parkinson sat on foothills at the base of Penny’s Hill, east of McLaren Vale, so the vineyard was named. In 1991 they planted the initial narrow-rows of Shiraz, aimed at minimum crops for maximum quality, and with the 1995 vintage the decision was made to bottle and label a small quantity of wine under the distinctive ‘red dot’ packaging. More so McLaren Vale’, Penny’s Hill is now an established premium estate producer of award-winning, fruit driven wines which reflect the outstanding diversity of terroir upon which McLaren Vale has grown its reputation.

thomas Goss history & Philosophy One of the original McLaren Vale pioneers, Thomas Goss (1810-1890), his wife Mary Ann (18131891) and their children arrived in South Australia from Devonshire in 1849. After success in the Victorian gold fields, Goss established an iconic farming property, ‘Ingleburne’ in McLaren Vale, which is now home to some of the region’s leading vineyards. Descendants of Thomas Goss then ventured into the neighbouring Adelaide Hills, where the cool climate was perfect for white varietals. Today these wines are a tribute to the persistence of Thomas Goss and his family's long contribution to the region.

history & Philosophy Situated in the Cape Winelands of South Africa the barrel-vaulted cellar buildings of Eikendal Vineyards form a distinctive landmark on the R44 route, positioned between the historic university town of Stellenbosch and the residential suburbs of Somerset West. Since 1981, the 76 hectare wine farm has been under the ownership of the Saager family of Zurich. The Swiss owners recognised the great potential of the area and wasted no time in modernising and extending the vineyards and the cellar facilities. Since 2006, winemaker Nico Grobler has been producing an exciting range of premium South African classic varietals and blends.

Vineyard & climate The winery is positioned in the so-called “Golden Triangle” of South Africa’s red wine production.

Eikendal have excellent terroir, with ‘koffieklip’ coffee stone and sandy soils with a good layer of clay beneath. The close proximity to the sea of False and Table Bay provides a cooling and humidifying effect, aerating the vines leading to less disease pressure, and cooling down the vines at night. Extended ripening periods leads to better quality grapes and a reduced loss of natural acidity. Eikendal take a minimal intervention approach in the vineyard, only using chemicals when absolutely necessary. Their vineyard team have been on the estate for generations, and are exceptionally skilled and trained. Straddling the slopes of the Helderberg mountain range, some of the Cape's finest wines are produced here.

The Estate is situated near Bonnievale in the southern part of the Robertson wine region, 150km from Cape Town and 70km from the South Atlantic Ocean. Wines from this area have become household names both in South Africa and internationally. Van Zylshof is a small estate where father-and-son team Chris and Andri Van Zyl believe in producing limited quantities of handmade, quality wines, using time-honoured methods combined with modern techniques. Since 1984, the Van Zyls have concentrated on planting only the best clones available of Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They produce an entry level range that provide easydrinking, good quality wines that offer excellent value for money.

Vineyard & climate The Estate comprises of 40 hectares, 35 of which are currently under vineyards of lime-rich soil on a gentle southern slope above the Breede river. Deep, rich soils, combined with a moderate climate influenced by the Breede River and cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean, create perfect conditions for the cultivation of noble grape varieties, producing wines that are elegant with good acidity and minerality.
