The Bartlett School of Architecture 2013

The Bartlett has extensive studios, workshops, seminar and lecture rooms, exhibition spaces, computing facilities and environmental laboratories. Specialist facilities in the School of Architecture include DMC London, Media Hub, an advanced computing cluster with printing/plotting and scanning (CADCAM), robotics and an exceptional workshop. All are staffed by teams of exceptionally skilled and experienced designers, makers, teachers and technicians. As of 2013 all these facilities are being brought together under one new identity – Bartlett Manufacturing and Design Exchange. B>MADE consists of: Digital Manufacturing Centre (DMC) DMC London is the Bartlett School of Architecture’s state-of-the-art digital manufacturing centre. The centre’s advanced 3D modeling facility brings together key technologies in 3D printing, including two ZCorp 3D printers, two Selective laser Sintering (SLS) printers, and an Object Connex 500 multiple polymer printer.

Workshop The Bartlett workshop, run by a team of craftsmen and architects, plays a crucial role in design education and research. The workshop contains a wide range of machinery for modelling wood, plastic and metal. The workshop’s principal equipment consists of: one table saw, two band saws, one planer, one wood lathe, four pillar drills, two TIG welders, two metal lathes, one milling machine, one vacuum former, one plastics bender, an extensive stock of hand tooling and 15 workbenches. Artificial Sky & Thermal Labs Bartlett students also enjoy access to advanced equipment in thermal monitoring and lighting simulation, facilities that are run by the Faculty’s School of Graduate Studies. Over the summer of 2013, The Bartlett will be recruiting for a new Technical Director of B>MADE who will lead these unrivalled facilities into a new era of interdisciplinary research and production.

Media Hub The Media Hub is the central resource within the Bartlett School of Architecture for photography, audiovisual, moving image and 3D scanning. The facility offers tuition in and access to equipment and techniques central to the production and representation of architectural ideas. Principal equipment, tooling and facilities include wet darkrooms, lighting studio, new 3D scanning support, 4D animation. CADCAM & Robotics The Bartlett has invested over £1.5m in state of the art equipment for B>MADE in recent years, including two large CNC milling centres, a large CNC flatbed router, three industry standard laser cutters, a large vacuum former, two desktop robotic arms, and one large robotic arm. Orders for a waterjet cutter and more robotics have been placed for next academic year. Image: Tom Svilans, MArch Architecture, Unit 23 360
