Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice & Management in Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part 3) Susan Ware The new modular Bartlett Part 3 programme has now been running successfully for a year and is designed to meet the new ARB and RIBA criteria for Part 3 and the new practical experience requirements.
The Bartlett School of Architecture 2013
This six-module part-time programme can be taken over 12, 18 or 24 months to suit students’ employment and work/life commitments. The programme is made up of five modules, each delivered over a six-week period, and which can be taken in any order; each module is assessed in a different format. The sixth module is composed of a case study, career appraisal and evidence of work experience. Each student’s experience of learning and development in professional practice will differ, depending on the type of project, type and location of practice and management processes undertaken, and the preparation for the examination must therefore be approached in a structured way, whilst recognising the diversity of the profession and the construction industry. Module 6 is delivered through one-to-one tutorials where students have the opportunity to explore, analyse and reflect upon their professional education and experience with their tutor. We aim to educate a generation of architects who are equipped to practice in an increasingly challenging environment. We do this by providing teaching and learning which encourages students to develop the skills beyond those required at threshold level by the professional criteria through reflection, appraisal, critical enquiry and research. We ask students to examine the role of the architect in the changing global construction industry to examine the effect of politics and economics on the design and procurement of the built environment in future practice. The programme is delivered through a comprehensive series of 50 lectures given by experts from practice and from within the Faculty. In addition, the teaching in each module is led by a 308
director who is either a member of the Professional Studies team or an expert from practice. The school draws extensively from long standing connections with practice and the construction industry. The programme aims to provide students with the skills to be competent to practice and demonstrate the knowledge, ability, judgment and integrity needed to fit an architect for his or her professional duties and to understand how an office organisation is managed for this purpose. Professional criteria are used to establish evidence of candidates’ fitness to practice, demonstrated through their professional, procedural and technical awareness, understanding, knowledge and ability and have achieved a threshold of competence (in terms of knowledge and ability) and professionalism (in terms of conduct and responsibility) that is consistent and relevant, and will safeguard clients, building users and society. Continuing Professional Development – CPD at the Bartlett A series of 50 + lectures take place on Tuesday evenings from January to May as part of the Part 3 programme, these lectures are available either as a full CPD update course or as groups of themed lectures. The lectures cover the key topics required by ARB and the RIBA for the maintenance of competence to practice. Bartlett 3+3 Programme These Friday afternoon CPD events take place twice a year and are aimed at those who completed their Part 3 three or more years ago. Experts in planning, energy, contracts, employment law and so on present a number of short update talks covering legislation and practice matters which have changed in the last three years or so. The event is followed by an opportunity to network and discuss informally.
