Design

The Bartlett School of Architecture 2013

The process of design is at the core of architecture, painting and sculpture and yet today the term extends far beyond the realm of these classical disciplines. If we examine the complexity of urban life, our experience encompasses all facets of the environment: physical, experiential and climatological. The imaginative leap that is required to create a piece of design often recalls poetry, prose, music and dance, these are sometimes subliminal and at other times direct references, blended with technological and historic data required to make a piece of architecture. The expectations of this School are therefore a reflection of Renaissance ability where the attention to scientific detail must be underpinned by an understanding of cultural context. The emphasis is not only on the production of artefacts but also of ideas that lead to all manner of speculation about the future. The drawing is now a means of expression but the advent of CADCAM, digital fabrication digitisation and computational script demand a mastery of not only the historic means of representation but also the tools of the 21st century and beyond. From the new foundation programme to doctoral research, the Bartlett School of Architecture encourages and emphasises design experimentation that is informed by social responsibility and stimulated by the creative dialogue between writing and making. The relationship between the drawing, text, artefact and building are multidirectional. For example, the drawing may lead to building, but writing may also lead to making and building may lead to writing and drawing. It is impossible to summarise all the influences that are brought to bear in the production of the work you see in the Bartlett Book, yet it is all the result of serious and well-researched endeavour. The Book represents only the tiniest fraction of work undertaken throughout the year and it is near impossible to describe the level of commitment demonstrated by both students and staff in the 18

production of these drawings, models and installations. The work must be seen as a celebration of imagination and activity and also a very serious contribution to the debate as to how society might live in the future. Each year The Bartlett awards a number of prizes, some very historic and others kindly donated by contemporary practice. I am delighted to announce that this year Make are awarding three new prizes to our first year BSc students. Professor Christine Hawley Director of Design
