Director’s Welcome

Director’s

Welcome To some, birthdays are to be endured and quickly forgotten. As Warwick Sport approaches its sixth anniversary, we have, however, something to be proud of and to celebrate. With a membership in excess of 10,000, supporting over 70 sports clubs and a significant programme of sports development, our next birthday should provide an opportunity for Warwick students and staff, past and present, to reflect on a short, but successful history. The dedicated Warwick Sport staff, supported by officers of the Students’ Union, have worked enthusiastically to enhance the opportunities available at Warwick to pursue sport and physical activity. The aim has been to provide these opportunities to all, regardless of individual skill level or aspiration, yet endeavouring to create a climate that allows and encourages individuals to be the best they can and wish to be. ‘Sport For All’ has been our aim, but increasingly we are eager to support our talented athletes through a sports’ bursary and scholarship scheme and the identification of Focus Clubs’ that receive additional support and funding because of their sporting successes and ambition to compete at the highest levels in student sport.

Warwick Sport

We are now into the final few months leading up to the UK hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. These events will not only be the greatest showcase of sporting talent seen in this country for generations to come, but also will provide the inspiration to millions to become involved in sport. We must harness this excitement to encourage more and more of the Warwick community to participate in sport and physical activity. Our outstanding stock of sports facilities continue to be maintained at an ever higher standard, with new facilities being added on a regular basis. In the current academic year we have invested in 4 new synthetic clay courts next to the Indoor Tennis Centre. Adjacent to the Lakeside Residences we have opened 3 new netball/ tennis macadam courts and an outdoor gym complex, contributing to a planned area for outdoor social activities. The Warwick Sporting story continues to prosper. We hope, likewise, that our sporting family continues to grow and prosper.

Sports Officer’s Welcome

Officer’s Welcome

Alright! I’m Chris your Sports Officer and it is an absolute pleasure to welcome you to Sport at Warwick. What a year lies ahead! With the Olympics quickly approaching, many more people will have their eyes on Sport. At Warwick we are more than ready for this! We have 73 Sports Clubs that offer all ability levels the chance to get involved in Sport. With this number of clubs it is no word of a lie that there is a Sport for everyone at Warwick. Each club can offer you a different atmosphere; level of competitiveness and the opportunity to get to know people just like yourselves that you may otherwise not meet. Our clubs compete nationally against other top universities across the country in BUCS leagues; but if you are after sport at a more casual level our E & Y leagues also offer the chance to play sport recreationally!

Chris Sury Students’ Union Sports Officer

When looking back on my three years at Warwick I can relate some of my best memories to Sport at Warwick. I truly believe that one of the best things you can do as a student is join a Sports Club, of which I am guilty of joining many! Whether you are a complete beginner, an elite athlete or want to pick up your Sport again I urge you to get involved! I promise you that you will not regret your decision! Clubs range from Trampolining, Sub Aqua, Skydiving, Judo and Football to the infamous Warwick Snow. Even if you want to sail a boat or ride the waves you CAN do this at Warwick! Of course, Sport at Warwick also offers some great socials! Whether this is the weekly socials on Wednesday nights, club meals or TOUR, the Sports community is a great place to be!

The calendar of Sport is one of the most exciting on campus. This includes massive Sports tournaments in One World Week and the huge Varsity series against Coventry University; ending in the largest Sports Ball in the country!

Clubs offer a great chance for people to personally develop themselves. Sportswomen and Sportsmen at Warwick are active in the local communities, and break records year on year when raising money for charity. There is also the chance to gain coaching and refereeing qualifications in many sports. It is certainly not an understatement to say that we have everything here ready for you to check out. Great facilities including a pool, athletics track, indoor tennis centre and climbing walls to name a few, they are top class and are the envy of many other Universities! If you want to get fit then check out the range of classes like spinning and aerobics!

Now go get the ball rolling!

In brief Sport at Warwick is for everyone. You can train and improve yourself at your chosen sports, make life long friends, party, and raise money for charity. Do not hesitate and get involved now!

Chris Sury Sports Officer

The Bear Rock has hosted rounds of both the British Indoor Climbing Championships and the British Youth Championships. The main hall has multitude of high quality routes ranging from grade 3 to 8a with new routes being set on a weekly basis. These are normally set by local or in-house route setters. This ensures we have minimum disruption to climbing in the centre because of the setting and this never takes place during our busy periods on weekday evenings. The routes themselves also reflect our customer base with the majority of our routes being around the grade 6 area but whatever your ability the Bear Rock has what it takes to cater for your needs.

Inclusive Fitness Initiative

The Inclusive fitness Initiative (IFI) is a programme that supports the fitness industry to become more inclusive, catering for the needs of disabled and non-disabled people alike. The university achieved accredited status in October 2009. The IFI model is driven by developments in four key areas of fitness provision, underpinned by research conducted in 1998, which has led to a holistic approach, ensuring that you should expect a truly inclusive experience when visiting an accredited inclusive fitness facility.

● Inclusive Fitness Equipment

● Staff Training

● Inclusive Marketing

As a consequence you will find accessible facilities, equipment that is appropriate for the vast majority of disabled people, a positive culture and staff attitude and a facility that understands the value of a diverse and inclusive customer base.

Warwick’s The Place to Be

The University of Warwick has over the years invested a significant amount of money into a capital development programme that adds value to the student and staff experience. In having this fantastic facility stock and partnership with Warwick Conferences it has enabled the University to capitalise on developing a successful events programme on site. This type of business allows the University to maximise the opportunities to develop strategic partnerships, generate income and create positive regional and national exposure, which in turn has a positive impact on the student and staff experience by reinvestment into our programmes and developing a profile around the Warwick brand.

These are just a few examples of the clients that the University has been working with over the last 6-12months. In working with Warwick Conferences we are looking forward to increasing the number of clients we work with and the ambition is to turn some of them into strategic partners, for some long term outcomes. In delivering and growing this client list we would like to open up the opportunity for members of Warwick Sport who are thinking of pursuing a career in event management or even just have an interest to come and get involved!

Warwick’s The Place To Be

13

Over the past year we have had some very positive news around the 2012 Olympics. The University of Warwick has now been confirmed as a training site for the Olympic Football tournament in 2012 and we will during a period of 6 weeks host some of the World’s most talented players here on campus. They will train at Cryfield on the same pitches that you, our members, use for competitions and training. This will see the University linked with the City of Coventry Stadium who have been selected as a host city complex for the Olympic Football tournament. With this news the University has invested in a new irrigation system at Cryfield which will allow us to improve and maintain the pitch standards throughout the year. Looking back over the past year the University has hosted some fantastic events and the list is growing each year, providing opportunity to raise the profile of the University and the facilities we have available. Below is a snapshot of some of the clients we have worked with:

In developing this programme of events we would like to share the opportunities they create for personal development and vocational experience. During the year there will be events taking place on campus that we would like you as members of Warwick Sport to be part of. The BUCS sporting programme is available to the 2.3 million students across the UK. Over 100,000 students regularly compete in BUCS competitions, leagues and events. BUCS delivers 50 sports to these students and universities and organises 150 individual final or championship events each year. The seasonal programme begins at the start of the academic year in October with the National Surfing Championships in Newquay; and continues until the following July with the final events including, cricket, archery and athletics competitions. Over 70 Warwick teams compete in BUCS team sports and competitions each year and the finale for many is the BUCS Championships. There really is no better feeling than donning your Warwick kit and representing your university. We had a great deal of success in the 2010-11 season with Warwick team’s winning no fewer than 9 BUCS leagues including Men’s Cricket being promoted to the premier league. Currently ranked 21st, the University has ambitions to become a top 15 sporting institution.

Right To Play Right to Play are the official Warwick Sport Charity; and throughout the year clubs and individuals raise money for this very deserving and worthwhile charity in a number of different ways. Over the past two years thanks to initiatives such as the Right to Play naked calendars, skydiving’s Great Warwick Jump and Trampolining’s ‘Bounce-athon’ to name but a few, Warwick Sport has raised in excess of £10,000. To recognise this success, alumni Leo Matlock won Right to Play’s inaugural ‘Red Ball Award’. Warwick Sport plans to continue this relationship with Right to Play over the coming year and help raise even more money to help support the fantastic work they do. With much of the ethos on club sports previously being of a participatory nature it was decided that with the ever improving performance of many of the clubs at Warwick that a programme would be piloted to give increased support to a small selection of clubs. These clubs received additional support in the form of individual coached fitness sessions, a Warwick Sport staff mentor and increased finances and services to further their development and performance as a club. “As part of this programme, we were assigned a mentor, Lisa Infantino of Warwick Sport, whose support and assistance were invaluable to the great improvements the club has been able to achieve this year. We’ve increased member involvement, improved the image of the club, and our first team finished second in the league and drew

with Coventry in an outstanding Varsity match. More than anything, being designated as a focus club gave a sense of being taken seriously and helped to direct and energise the intentions of the exec. With the addition of government money the amount received was in excess of £37,000. This generous donation will secure this scholarship fund for many years to come. In the first year of operation we were able to support a significant number of our University students, all of whom were competing during the academic year 2010/ 2011 at least at age-group international level in major championships through to World competition level. Specifically, funding supported sports men and women from the following sports: Biathlon/ Triathlon, Sailing, Canoe Slalom, Lacrosse, Equestrian Vaulting, Floorball and Rowing. Applications for this fund are reviewed on an annual basis.

Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) TASS is a Government funded programme that represents a unique partnership between sport and higher and further education. It will enable young talented athletes to maintain the right balance between academic life, training and competition by providing scholarships up to the value of £3000 for students. The programme awards Scholarships to talented athletes that are committed to combining their sport and education. It aims to reduce the drop out of talented athletes from sport and supports and develops the talent of today for sporting success in the future. Advice and support is offered to all athletes and opportunities are available to take part in athlete workshops to help individuals reach their potential. Festival of Sport The year starts with a week of sporting fun, this is your opportunity to try our facilities for free, sample numerous taster sessions, meet the clubs and attend team trial. This is a great chance to use the fantastic sports facilities including the pool, gym, sports halls, synthetic pitches, tennis courts and much more. Varsity This is one of the year’s competitive highlights. Varsity sees the sporting might of Warwick take battle against bitter rivals Coventry University in a variety of sports, with only one University able to take the Varsity shield back to their respective campus. With last year’s Varsity being very close, the pressure will intensify once again. Help Warwick retain their undefeated title by either participating or supporting the mighty Warwick. Look out for the dates in term 2, this is not to be missed. One World Week Sport This year One World Week Sport will kick off on 20th January and end on the 28th. With over 5000 participants, the week celebrates the common language of sport and the many international students that we have on campus. The tournaments are always huge and a lot of fun. One World Week Sport is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and play the game you love, make sure you don’t miss it. Student Sports Committee Want to get involved with running sport at Warwick, with great opportunities to meet people, to have responsibility for projects and budgets, gain vital experience in management and have a great time in the process. If so then why not look into joining Sports Committee, the

committee responsible for helping run most of the above events and much more. Email sports@warwicksu.com if you are interested. Ernst & Young Leagues Throughout the year these football, netball and cricket leagues provide weekly fixtures and a chance to stay active, meet great friends and really enjoy sport. Teams are generally based around flatmates, course mates or just complete randomers. Just ensure you sign up online early in term 1 and these games will be the highlight of your week. Tours One of the highlights of being a member of our many sports clubs are the tours that they embark on throughout the year. Each club has a unique tour experience and you are always guaranteed to have a great time as well as get to know your team mates just a little bit better. Some clubs will take part in organised multi sports tournaments in the UK and abroad in which you get to play Universities from across the country, others such as the cricket club look further a field to South Africa or India in search of a new challenge whilst Warwick Snow organise huge trips to ski resorts for in excess of 600 students. Wherever the tour takes you, for however long, they will give you memories that will last a lifetime. Sports Ball A great part of being a member of a sports club is the social life. Your sports mates become your best friends. Sports ball is a night of celebrating the year’s sporting achievements, along with plenty of banter. A superb dinner, guest speaker, a live band, all you’re best mates and everyone looking fabulously dressed in their smartest clothes. Sports Ball is one of the best nights throughout the year. Summer of Sport Sport at Warwick isn’t all about winning and as an antidote to the intense cauldron that is Varsity, over the final few weeks of the 3rd term, the Summer of Sport provides a laid back approach. Each event is all about what Warwick Sport stands for – getting active and getting involved. Countless activities and tournaments all over campus allows you to do just that, getting house/hall mates, colleagues, course and team mates together to do battle in small sided team games and other fun activities.

Achievements Achievements 2010-11 We celebrate all who participate in Sport and activities at Warwick at every level; it is amazing to have over 50% of the campus community who are members of Warwick Sport. From our very own awards to International medals, join with us in congratulating all of the amazing achievements that our staff and students accomplished in 2010-11. Here are just a few of the success stories for the academic year 2010-11.

Frances Peters Changes Class of Boat in Preparation for 2016

Warwick Judo bring home 4 medals in BUCS National Champs On the last weekend of term two, Warwick Judo made the journey to Sheffield to compete in the British University Championships leaving Warwick triumphant with four individual medals. Warwick dominated the 100kg with David Ooi, Phil Hartley, Robbie Ripamonti securing gold, silver and bronze. Jack Gray took individual bronze in the U81kg category completed a memorable BUCS Championships for the Club.

Due to a re-evaluation of the class of boat that will be in the 2016 Olympics, Frances has had to change focus and re-shuffle teams within the Olympic squad programme. The most exciting part of this decision was the inclusion of a women’s high performance ‘’skiff’’ class which she describes as a faster, more exciting, harder to sail, boat. Since December Frances has made the transition into a ladies skiff class, in a new partnership. They got their selves a headstart on this process and are currently top girls in the UK in this class, and are still on the Olympic development squad. They are training or racing almost every weekend throughout the year.

Warwick Panthers Ice Hockey Crowned National Champions

Warwick Sport

For some, it had been an event four years in the making. Having been denied the title by Cardiff and then Nottingham for successive years, the Panthers had remained undefeated in the league and were ready to finally etch Warwick’s name onto the title trophy.

Warwick’s Women Become British First American Football Team The Warwick Wolverines have become the first ever British women’s American Football team. Consisting of several enthusiastic young women from the University of Warwick, they are a pioneering team for the British University American Football League’s (BUAFL) new “Women’s 5 on 5” initiative. The initiative aims to get more women involved in a non-contact version of the sport. BUFAL Director Andy Fuller said, “The team at Warwick have been at the forefront of the league’s initiative. Given the pedigree of the university, the commitment of the girls and the quality of the coaching staff I have no doubt they will emerge as a benchmark of the programme in Great Britain.”

Varsity XXI will not be forgotten anytime soon. It was the 21st Annual instalment of the series but 2011 was different incorporating 3 showcase events spread over 3 months. Warwick were firmly on the back foot after the Ice Hockey, Basketball, Netball and Karting but American Football and Rugby Union clawed Warwick back to 10-10 going into Varsity Day. Results came in thick and fast and it could not have been closer. For the first time Football would be the main event and Warwick did not not disappoint with the Mens 1st team winning in a gripping penalty shootout. In what was another close contest but Warwick were able to maintain their perfect record against their city rivals overcoming Coventry 38-32.
