Volunteer earns royal thanks Barrhaven resident receives Duke of Edinburgh’s Award DANIEL NUGENT-BOWMAN daniel.bowman@metroland.com

Add years of community service with a mix of skill improvement and a pinch of waiting, and the recipe for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has been a lengthy process for Alexandra Spiess. The Barrhaven native received the prize from His Royal Highness, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, at a ceremony in Toronto on July 26. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is given to those aged 14 to 25 for their commitment shown in community service, skill development, physical recreation and adventurous journey. See GREEN, page 2

“I don’t think that will ever happen for me again,” said Spiess about getting an award from a member of the Royal Family. “That is the cherry on top of the icing.” Now 28, Spiess was one of the older recipients of the award. While she achieved all the necessary criteria prior to her 25th birthday as required, Spiess wasn’t able to make it to Toronto for any ceremonies in the past. But that doesn’t mean those memories have vanished, particular when it comes to the adventurous journey portion – spearheading a camping trip in Algonquin Park for five other people. “I definitely think, more than anything, what the award means to me is not about just getting that pin at the end of the day,” she said. “It’s about what I achieved. “That canoe trip for me was the last thing that I completed… I hadn’t grown up doing adventure camping with my family. I was a little bit daunted by the task. “What the award allowed me to do was set the goal, and then gave me a way to work towards it.” To prepare for the trip four years ago, Spiess took outdoor courses to make sure she knew about proper nutrition and navigation techniques. To secure the award, Spiess was a leader for the Girl Guides of Canada, improved her creative and non-fiction writing practice and study, attended a week-long Fo-

rum for Young Canadians in Ottawa, was a member of the Ottawa Women’s Hockey League and took swimming, downhill skiing, jazz and dance classes. She also started a recycling program while at John McCrae Secondary School. “Every week I arranged to have it collected and brought outside as part of the community service,” she said. “It seemed a shame when those bins were already available and the city trucks could come by and take it.” CARLETON GRAD While graduating from Carleton University with a degree in English and humanities, Spiess worked as a Senate page. She now works as a political officer in the Department of Foreign Affairs and is about to leave for Indonesia, where she’ll post at the Canadian Embassy for two years. Spiess said all of her recognized experiences have helped her along life’s path. “Several days in the back woods of Algonquin with the same people all day long, you learn a lot about teamwork and people skills and conflict resolution,” she said. “It was really helpful from that point of view.” The award was founded by His Royal Highness Prince Philip to encourage personal development and community involvement for young people. Since its establishment in Canada in 1963, more than 500,000 young Canadians have taken the challenge.

Manotick native Brad Fritsch tees off during the RBC Canadian Open at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver. Fritsch was one of just five Canadians to make the cut. finished their round,” he said. “There were just a couple holes where it was almost impossible to get it up to the green from the rough – the longer par 4s.” As the golf season winds down, Fritsch said he’s focused on his upcoming events on the Canadian Tour and North Carolina’s eGolf Professional Tour. Fritsch, who is an honorary

member of Manotick’s Rideau View Country Club, sits 12th on the Canadian Tour’s Order of Merit with almost $26,000 through July 28. His goal, he said, is to put himself in the best position possible to earn his PGA Tour card for 2012 when qualifying school roles around in December – a far different set of expectation

prior to when he first teed off in Vancouver. “The more you put yourself in good situations in regular tournaments coming down the last couple holes of an event and maybe leading, you’ll be able to perform under pressure,” he said. “Putting yourself in nervous situations is the best thing possible.”

Plans for a mosque on Woodroffe Avenue are back on the citys radar. The president of the South Nepean Muslim Community (SNMC) hopes a site plan for the mosque will get approval within weeks. “The city has given us input and we have resubmitted our site plan,” said Emdad Khan, adding that the redrawn plans incorporate suggestions from the city’s planning department. The site is on the west side of Woodroffe Avenue, between Longfields and Claridge drives. Khan said the SNMC has the $500,000 required to pay for some of the site services – water, sewer and electrical hook-ups – but needs to raise about $350,000 more. A digging ceremony was held on the property last weekend. “It was a symbolic (act),” Khan said of the groundbreaking. “It’s to keep the momentum going because people ask when we are going to start building.” Khan estimated there are about 8,000 Muslims living in south Nepean. Today, those who wish to pray in a communal setting meet at the heritage building near the corner of Jockvale Road and Strandherd Drive. Khan said about 300 people usually attend Friday prayers there, which means the space is crowded and hot due to lack of air conditioning. Once the Woodroffe mosque is built, Khan says up to 750 people may attend Friday prayers each week between noon and 1 p.m. Traffic access to the new mosque would be via Woodroffe and via some neighbourhood streets to the west that are yet to be constructed.

Considering he didn’t have any expectations heading into the RBC Canadian Open, Brad Fritsch was pretty pleased with the final result. After having to play in a Monday qualifier in Surrey, B.C., the Manotick native was only one of five Canadians to make the two-round cut at the national championship, held at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver from July 21 to 24. “The week before in Winnipeg, I played really well,” the Canadian Tour member said. “I didn’t set any goals for the week. I’m playing well, I’m just really curious to see if I can play well on a different stage.” Fritsch finished the event at 15-over par, good for a tie of 71st. Making his fourth Canadian Open appearance, Fritsch said he had an idea of what to expect. But considering it was his first time playing in the event since 2008 and the tournament was held on a course with thick, U.S. Open style rough, he was proud of how he fared. “I held up well, especially Friday,” he said of his even-par 50. “Friday was tough. It was the day of the cut and I really wanted to play on the weekend. I just played really solid and didn’t allow any mistakes.” During the tournament, there were a few veteran players who suggested the rough course was too penal, but Fritsch thought it played fair for everyone. The 33-year-old said he really only had one poor round. That came on the Saturday of the tournament when he had trouble finding the fairway off the top and shot 80. “I found some of the comments from certain players a little over the top, but they were probably taken right after they

Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind has announced the birth of the latest litters of puppies. Within several weeks, these puppies will require foster homes to learn what it takes to become a “good dog before entering formal training to become guide dogs or assistance dogs to help someone in need. Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind is seeking foster families for the latest arrivals. You must be home most of the day or obtain permission to take the dog to work with you. You require access to a vehicle for veterinary appointments and training sessions. All food and veterinary

expenses are provided. This is a 12- to 18-month commitment, raising and training the dog in your home, with the expectation for daily long walks in all conditions. When the dog is ready to enter into formal training at the national training centre of Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind in Manotick, you must be prepared to give up the dog so that it may continue its journey to aid as a guide dog or assistance dog. Information sessions for this program will be held on Aug. 12 and 26, and Sept. 9. For more information, contact Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind at 613-692-7777 or email info@guidedogs.ca

Growing support for Haiti DANIEL NUGENT-BOWMAN daniel.bowman@metroland.com

When Grace Agostinho travelled to Haiti in January 2010 to visit an orphanage she raised money to help build, she figured she had witnessed all the country could handle. But given that her trip was one week prior to an earthquake that crippled the country, the owner of Manotick’s French Café knew Haitians were only enduring the beginning of a crisis. “I thought it was the worst,” said the Greely resident, recalling her first trip through tears. “All my sales went to Haiti the next day.” The earthquake also tore down Agostinho’s orphanage, which was home to 35 children, and just like that the connection she had with Haiti shifted into overdrive. Agostinho first began devoting her charitable efforts to the Caribbean island nation three years ago after reading a newspaper article explaining the plight of orphans and widows. “I’m international,” she said when asked what intrigued her about helping Haiti. “I’m Portuguese, I own a French cafe. Ev-

eryone has a story.” Through independent efforts like spaghetti dinners and garage sales, plus a change box and painting sales at her cafe, Agostinho has raised over $50,000 – with the help of the Ottawa-based Foundation for the Sustainable Development of Haiti. The money allowed her to return to Haiti on July 12, where she started up her latest effort – an agriculture project in Caracol, located on the northern coast of the country. “My heart goes out to these people because I know them better,” she said. “I can’t leave them. They need help forever.” Agostinho said she chose to base this project in Caracol instead of the capital of Port-auPrince because those in the bigger city were crammed in like “a can of sardines.” “They’re still in despair but less frustrated,” she said, while comparing Caracol to Manotick and Port-au-Prince to Ottawa. Overall, the trip was a success, she said while showing off about two dozen pictures on the wall of her cafe. She was able to donate $600 worth of goat, vegetables and

French Café owner Grace Agostinho has raised over $50,000 for relief efforts in Haiti over the last three years. For her latest project, the Greely resident has started an agriculture program in Caracol, on the northern coast of the country, and is in search of a tractor to donate.

rice, which a priest prepared for 100 people one night. While she explained that she wants to give hope to women and children in the country – particularly since those who attend school have very few educational options past Grade 6 – it’s the farming that she has put her greatest emphasis on re-

cently. Agostinho is now in search of a tractor, which is needed to cultivate the harsh soil. She said that she vows to find a good one and then ship to Haiti, just like she did with an old ambulance from Montreal. But for those willing to donate supplies – bicycles and clothing

included – she cautions that they will only be accepted if in good condition. “If it’s not good for you, it’s not good for them,” Agostinho said. “It needs to be functional. “I want to give them hope and make them sustainable.” Agostinho said she’d like to return in November in time for the farming season and bring her children, Vanessa, 20, and Samuel Rodrigue, 14, with her. While her whole family has been very supportive, she said the experience would be beneficial for her children just like it was for her husband Guy Rodrigue, who accompanied her in mid-July. “He can talk from his own heart,” she said. “He is with me now.” While she can’t afford to travel to Haiti as much as she wants to, Agostinho knows she wouldn’t be able to go at all if it wasn’t for members of the local community – and she’ll continue to push for both them and Haitians. “They’re behind me and they trust me. There are results there, whatever I do,” Agostinho said. “I’ll do the best I can and won’t stop.”

Manotick residents play key role in EX film DANIEL NUGENT-BOWMAN daniel.bowman@metroland.com

The SuperEx had been a staple at Lansdowne Park since 1888 until a decision to suspend the summertime amusement was made last February. Now a film documenting the 122-year history at the site will premiere at Lansdowne on Aug. 18. tons from forging ahead on their project. While Robert had produced two smaller documentaries in the past, including one about the Carleton Place Canoe Club, he admitted that this one became a different animal. Originally the film was supposed to be 44 minutes – an hour’s worth of television time – but morphed into a 100-minute production because of all the interesting interviews and footage, taking nearly a year to complete. Robert said he has enough material for a six-hour mini-series and wouldn’t rule out the possibility if asked to do so.

“It was such an important part of Ottawa’s heritage and history,” he said. Robert described the film as being for “plain old Ex lovers,” something that certainly the Presleys can relate to. While Lyn has yet to view the film, she expects the premiere to pull at the heartstrings of many people. “It will be a lasting memory of some of the things at Lansdowne Park, which if they hadn’t done this, some of those memories would be lost,” she said. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at www.memoriesoftheex.com. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

The SuperEx midway will be missed by kids and adults this summer.

When an independent film documenting the history of the SuperEX premieres at Lansdowne Park on Aug. 18, Lyn and David Presley won’t miss it for the world. While the Manotick residents are both past presidents of the Central Canada Exhibition Association (CCEA), the SuperEX means much more to them than being board members. “We met each other at the exhibition and my husband was a concessionaire there before we married,” Lyn said. “His father played in the band at the exhibition so my husband was at the exhibition every day of his life.” With stories like that, the pair will both be prominently featured in interviews for Memories of the Ex: 122 Years at Lansdowne, a privately-funded filmed produced by Robert and Sharon Newton. “David was kind of a source of knowledge for them,” Lyn said, noting that her husband passed on various contacts that were used by the producers. “We just tried to help them as much as we could and steer them in the right direction.” Lyn said she remembers watching the night-time fireworks on top of her family’s nearby house and notes that this will be the first time her husband has not been to the SuperEX since he was a toddler. Last February, the CCEA board announced to suspend the SuperEX for 2011, marking the first time since 1888 that no exhibition will be held with the exception of during both world wars. The decision was made because of the redevelopment plans at Lansdowne Park and high cost of operating at a temporary site for 2011, the SuperEx’s website read. But that didn’t stop the New-

Lansdowne opponents were heard

P

eople who follow the Lansdowne saga know better than to say “It’s over.” But Justice Charles Hackland’s ruling in favour of the city last week certainly marked a turning point for the beleaguered redevelopment. Many issues brought up by community groups over the last couple of years received a thorough legal vetting. And whether you agree or disagree with the ruling, it’s beneficial to step back from the issues and listen to the perspective of a neutral third party. There were some missteps, Hackland said. City council could probably have benefitted from reading the Deloitte report, which was never made available to councillors. But at the end of the day, that (and other minor missteps) wouldn’t have changed the outcome, Hackland said. Furthermore, it wasn’t done to subvert the public interest, the justice said. The city acted in good faith. Those rulings will likely hold some weight if Glebe resident John Martin follows through on his threat to launch his own court case. Hackland already spilled a significant amount

of ink insisting that the city followed its own procurement rules when it accepted the sole-sourced bid from the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG). The auditor general and a consulting law firm agreed. So it is difficult to imagine what leg is left for Martin to stand on if he wishes the court to rule that the city broke that law. And perhaps it is for the better if his case goes nowhere. For sports fans in the city, it would be difficult to believe that OSEG’s deals for Canadian Football League and North American Soccer League teams would still stand if OSEG wasn’t the one redeveloping the stadium. Residents’ concerns are important and serve to provide a voice of dissent that can result in meaningful improvements to the project. Their voices have been heard – both through this court case, and the Ontario Municipal Board hearing before it. Changes have been made. It will never be perfect, but at least we can look forward to grass – and sports – at Lansdowne once again.

How to kill your intuition D

espite and because of claims that we make the bulk of our decisions intuitively and within a matter of milliseconds, I am on a purposeful quest to quash my intuition. It hasn’t served me well, it’s expensive, and it needs to be put in its place. The thing is I’m a notorious joiner. Nothing gets my blood going like signing up for things. Oh, the sweet thrill of the registration process! In the past three years I have forked over hundreds of dollars for the following: French classes (twice); cooking classes; teacher’s college application fees (three times); ashtanga yoga; swimming lessons; boot camp; gymnastics boot camp; and several trial gym memberships. Sadly, I have yet to see the inside of a GoodLife Fitness, I have plateaued at an intermediate level in French since 1999, I am not a qualified teacher, and I still don’t know how to cook or swim proficiently. My husband, the more reflective within our spousal unit, always attempts to curb my impulsivity. BRYNNA LESLIE Capital Muse myself and my family to be less rash in future. I’ve decided to change my extemporaneous ways once and for all. Yes, I’ve become a list-maker. For the last six weeks, I have balanced the pros and cons of every life-altering decision, including but not limited to, the following: how I spend money; what I eat for breakfast; who I work for; how I pass my vacation time; and how often I shower while camping. Gruelling though it may be to list the benefits and pitfalls of Cheerios each morning, it has triggered a more thoughtful approach to breakfast. By taking a step back and examining the ingredients list on the box, I am more likely to return it to its habitual place – at the back of the cupboard – and

pull out the oatmeal or protein-packed muesli instead. The absence of temerity has also given my bank balance a boost. First, I’ve come to realize that camp showers are expensive and more often than not unnecessary. Second, instead of succumbing to daily Rogers-On-Demand movie requests and fee-per-use swims at the public pool, I’ve discovered many free or cheap day trip vacation alternatives for me and the kids. Finally, I’ve foregone debit and credit card purchases, prudently crafting a budget and determining how much cash I will require each week for groceries, toiletries and miscellaneous extras. The “pain” of handing over cold, hard cash which has been carefully considered in advance is much more real than the delayed anguish that often comes with perusing a Visa statement. As a result, I’m more cautious with my spending. I delete Groupon ads, and yes, I am that woman who returns things to the cashier at pointof-purchase because I’ve gone over my self-imposed limit. For me, impulsivity and intuition are too closely related to differentiate. The next time someone tells me to

“listen to my gut,” (or my heart or my bowel), when making a decision, I’ll try to resist. In my experience, my gut doesn’t tell me much except when I’m hungry. Instead, I’m putting it on paper, delaying my response, and being more speculative about the rumblings in my various organs. It may take a bit more time at first, but in the long term I know I’ll save hundreds of dollars, benefit my health, and, most importantly, quash my infamous reputation.

The 2012 Great Boys of Fire calendar features 12 of Ottawa’s finest firefighters, and will be ready for sale this September. Keep your eyes open for one of the several signing events this fall. You can also meet some of the calendar models at the Women’s Show, Sept. 24 and 25 at Lansdowne Park and at Carlingwood Shopping Centre from Oct. 6 to 8. The calendar will sell for $20, and all proceeds will go to the Care Grows West Campaign at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. Care Grows West is a $35-million fundraising campaign to expand health care for one of Canada’s fastest growing populations. The campaign will help support the building of the Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre and a brand new wing of the hospital, scheduled for opening in May 2012. The Child and Youth Friendly Ottawa competition was held at the Cedarhill Golf and Country Club in south Nepean last year. The organization will host the same tournament at the same location on Aug. 10.

Locals tee off for youth fundraiser kristy.wallace@metroland.com

Julianna Cronk believes Ottawa’s youth are capable of amazing things and that’s why over the past few months, she’s been helping to make the 11th annual Mayor’s Charity Golf Classic a success. “We want to try and extend an invite to everyone who takes a vested interest in youth success in the city,” said Cronk, an events assistant at Child and Youth Friendly Ottawa (CAYFO). “At CAYFO we’re building youth capacity and celebrating achievement in Ottawa.” The Mayor’s Charity Golf Classic will take place on Aug. 10 at Cedarhill Golf and Country Club in Barrhaven. Even though the fundraiser has been around for more than 10 years, Cronk said it’s been held at Cedarhill the last few years because they have had a great partnership with the club. “Every year we’ve always been very close to selling out,” Cronk said. “And with the support of Mayor (Jim) Watson this year, it’s been fantastic.” CAYFO, an Ottawa-based charity, builds youth capacity and celebrates youth achievement. Programs are created by and geared towards youth. Cronk said money raised from the tour-

nament will go towards CAYFO’s wide range of programs, including the Ottawa Youth Commission, which works with the city to ensure that young people’s voices are heard. Every year, Cronk said the tournament has helped raise about $30,000, which is the target once again. “In terms of foursomes, there are only a handful of spots left,” she said, adding the tournament will feature more than just a round of golf – participants will also have a chance to test their skills against youth in various ‘youth challenges’ that will be set up. “The youth challenges are always something people go on and on about,” she said. To register, email golf@cayfo.ca or call 613-244-3803. Foursomes are $800 and single players is $225 – which also includes the cost of lunch and dinner. For more information visit CAYFO’s website at: www.cayfo.ca . “The event shows how involved and fantastic youth are in the city,” Cronk said. “We break past the stereotype and really show off how fantastic Ottawa youth are.”

Nothing is more important to me than planning my family’s future.
