Police officers will patrol city parks and enforce curfew during the spring and summer months as part of the youth engagement strategy, which was launched on Friday, June 4. Ottawa police plan to deploy officers – including bicycle patrols – throughout the summer to target complaints of criminal activity and disorderly youth. Bylaw officers will also patrol problem parks and enforce violations of city bylaws, such as noise complaints and restricted access between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. The City of Ottawa’s Youth on the Move program will also focus on engaging teens to foster increased respect and understanding between youths and their

communities. Outreach workers will frequent city parks from June to the end of August and will meet regularly with police and bylaw officers. Engaging youth through recreation, education and outreach is part of the program’s goals. Police are asking Ottawa residents to report ongoing youth problems in park areas to help identify emerging trends and problem areas. Where applicable, parents will be held accountable for their children’s actions through the enforcement of curfew and restitution for damage. The summer initiative builds on the experience of last year’s youth engagement strategy.

Navigating Roundabouts.

JULY 17

The City of Ottawa is installing more and more roundabouts. Roundabouts are actually pretty simple to use and, more importantly, safer than traditional intersections. Because navigating roundabouts is new to many residents of Ottawa, the following tips will help steer you in the right direction. TIPS FOR DRIVERS • Reduce your speed when approaching a roundabout. • Watch for pedestrians and cyclists and be prepared to stop if necessary. • When approaching a roundabout, you will see a yield sign and a thick painted dashed line (yield line). Look to the left for approaching traffic within the roundabout and be prepared to stop. Vehicles in the roundabout have the right of way. • If another vehicle is stopped at the yield line, do not stop on the crosswalk. Keep the crosswalk clear for pedestrians. • Enter the roundabout when there is an acceptable gap in traffic. • Once in the roundabout, you have the right of way over all entering traffic. • Do not attempt to overtake other vehicles, including bicycles. • As you approach your exit, use your right turn signal to indicate your exit. • As you exit the roundabout, maintain your slow speed and watch for pedestrians and cyclists. For tips for pedestrians and cyclists or to learn about navigating two-lane roundabouts, please visit ottawa.ca/roundabouts. Ad # 09-2083-8829 | 394308
