Smelling the roses Tanunda’s Howard Haese isn’t bothered by thorns on rose stems, which is a good thing with the amount of time he spends in his glorious rose garden. Mr Haese and his wife, Joan moved into their home two years ago and found the lawn in bad shape, so they planted roses. “I decided to put roses in because you can smell them from the kitchen,” Mr Haese said. “I like them because of the different colours and perfumes you get.” An interest in manicured vineyards soon turned to an interest in roses for Mr Haese and has now become a
full-blown hobby. He said planting vines and roses go together because roses in a vineyard will show signs of mildew disease before vines. The hobby has been successful, with Mr Haese winning Barossa Beauty three years ago at the Barossa Rose and Flower Show. The following year, he won Grand Champion of the show and after the next hot, dry summer he only exhibited one rose but won First Champion and Grand Champion. A romantic at heart, Mr Haese picks the roses for his wife and gave her a single
red rose for Valentine’s Day this year. Heavy rains drenched the roses soon after planting, which helped the 21 different varieties to flourish immediately. Apart from a good watering, Mr Haese said regular fertilising was important in the health of roses. His favourite variety is a Charles Mallorein, because of its red colour and fragrance but he said the longest lasting rose was the Kardinal, which is also a red variety. The 84-year-old said getting out into the garden helped him stay active.

Makeover turns house into Mrs Alison Evans was in her element when she and her husband, Colin bought their Angaston home eight years ago. Alison’s passion for renovating and decorating was put to use on the home, which is the fourth they’ve owned along Moculta Road. The home has been through many renovations and Alison said they put eight
years of hard work into it, but like any home renovator or decorator would know, there is still more they would like to do. Walking into the garden, it is obvious the couple’s talent and passion for making their home beautiful extends outdoors. Kapunda stonemason, Mr Ian Otterspoor, replicated the existing stone for the retaining wall, which surrounds the relaxing outdoor dining area. The couple always get good comments from guests enjoying a platter, breakfast or lunch in the garden next to the water feature. The pavers in the outdoor dining area were aged to match the stone, but the most impressive feature is seeing the lights on at night. The house has been through many changes since Alison and Colin moved in, including walls being knocked down to create larger spaces and the addition of a kitchen and bathroom. Alison designed the sleek kitchen – along with the rest of the home – and cleanliness was on her mind at the time. “I didn’t want a gap between the cupboards and the ceiling because it gets too dusty,” she said.
Amongst the modern renovations, many personal touches can be found in the home, including this original lamp shade. Owners, Colin and Alison Evans with ‘Joe’. Alison describes the style of the home as traditional with a touch of modern, which can be seen in the original decorative living room ceiling and family antiques scattered around the home. She worked with what she already had when decorating the home and said she should’ve been
an interior decorator because she enjoys it so much. Her talent is evident throughout the houses, with many personal touches added to the spacious rooms. The couple plan to stay in the home for a long time – hopefully long enough for a wedding on the property and visits from grandchildren.

Autumn Home Ideas 2012 Plan and plant wisely The foundation member of the region’s garden club is calling on Barossa gardeners to plant wisely. That’s one of many tips Tanunda gardener, Mrs Desma Schiller has shared as the Barossa Valley and Districts Garden Club celebrate 20 years of operation. Mrs Schiller and her husband, Kevin moved into the Tanunda township after living on the farm. Together they transformed a blank canvas into a garden that has colour all year round. “The garden had no end of roots, there was claret ash all through the block,” said Mrs Schiller. “It was a big job to get rid of it.” Since then they have endured drought and grasshoppers but are still proud of their garden.
While gardens are generally about the ‘look’, Mrs Schiller said she likes the relaxation and pleasure it provides. “It can be hard work, but it can be pleasurable,” said Mrs Schiller. “There’s always something flowering all year round.” The front lawn of their Tanunda home died and has since been replaced with an array of natives and ground covers. The rear yard is lined with roses and Mrs Schiller has her own shade house too. But the current result is the outcome of trial and error. “I like trying new and different things,” said Mrs Schiller. “Learn from other people, walk around your neighbourhood. Autumn Home Ideas 2012 Creating an office at home Operating a business from home can be a great option for professionals with a young family. There are plenty of benefits – you don’t have to travel to work, you can save money from the wear and tear on your vehicle and if you want to pop the roast on and finish off the last bit of business for the day you can. But according to local businesswoman, Mrs Kath Newland it is important to strike a balance between your work and the home life. Together with husband, Andrew they converted part of the car shed at their Light Pass property five years ago allowing Kath to operate her PR and marketing consultancy business. The office, which is away from the house, comprises a kitchenette and sufficient space for work stations, storage and office files and supplies. “The beauty of it is I can go to work and move out of the house into a new area,” said Kath. “You need to keep it separate. Lots of my friends work from home and for them it’s either a door you can shut, or something you can close, otherwise you can become a slave to it.” Kath said there are many aspects that need to be considered when it comes to setting up a home office. “You have to have the appropriate lighting,” said Kath. “We also considered desk space, so we could grow if we needed other people. Also think about storage and filing cabinets.” Kath said it is important to consider the IT aspects including phone access, a sound computer with sufficient provision for security and backup as well as a printer/ scanning station. Also consider the temperature in the room – heating and cooling can play a big part to your ability to work effectively. While she is really happy with the office, Kath admits there are a few things she would look to change. “I’d put in another window so when you are working you can see out the window… it is more inspiring,” said Kath.
Mrs Kath Newland in her office at Light Pass. “Natural light is important too and if you work at night you need good light.” Some may say a cluttered desk is a good sign of a busy person but for Kath, being a mum to two children and having the ability to “drop everything” means she may not leave her workspace how she would like it to be. “I do spend a fair amount of time out here,” said Kath. “I try to keep the children out of here. When they were little I worked around their sleeping hours and we did have
toys in here when they were quite little but now they are five and seven I try to keep them out. “It works well to have the office away from the house and if you are away from the computer you can block it out.” But most of all, when it comes to establishing your own home office, planning is vital. “It’s your own work, so make it a space that’s inviting and comfortable,” said Kath.

Autumn Home Ideas 2012 Advice, approval – the keys to adding to your home Adding to your home can be an exciting time. Where to put the deck, verandah and the extra shed you have wanted for sometime. However, it is important to not only gain expert advice but also take into account the state’s development requirements for approval. Councils across the region are kept busy assessing applications, inspecting building sites and ensuring new additions to homes meet planning and development guidelines. According to The Barossa Council’s Mr Peter Morgan, building and health services manager, there are legal and practical aspects that need to be considered – even if you are tackling a simple extension or extensive renovations. “Everyone knows most structures require development approval… usually it’s to people’s own detriment to construct something without development approval,” said Mr Morgan. Mr Morgan said one of the biggest mistakes people make is not gaining approval for portable pools. “Inground, concrete or fibreglass pools obviously need approval but the pools that people aren’t aware of are those you buy from variety stores that hold more than 300mm of water and have a filtration device,” said Mr Morgan. “It’s not the small inflatable pools for children, it’s the larger ones you set up for the whole summer and pack away for winter. The standards for these portable pools don’t necessarily meet Australian standards.” Mr Morgan said the pools laws in SA can be confusing, especially for older pools because the date of installation has to be determined first to determine what rules apply.
The Barossa Council’s planner Mr Phil Harnett and building inspector, Mr Claus Williger assess work being carried out on a new home. In addition to swimming pools, spa pool safety needs to be considered and when selling the property assistance can be sought through a registered pool safety assessor to ensure the pool/spa meets the required safety standards. Verandahs, irrespective of the size and sheds, larger than the average tool shed (15m2) require a development application. Council planner, Mr Phil Harnett said while most tradespeople will submit your application to Council for the installation of sheds and verandahs, the onus is still on the landholder.
But with any addition or alterations to your home it is important to consider matters such as stormwater collection and disposal, your neighbours, the visual impact, where your septic system is located and if you are in a bushfire zone. “You can build on the boundary, in most instances, but it’s good to be aware of problems this can lead to later,” said Mr Morgan. “On a level block it is a good idea to keep the floor of the shed at a reasonable height above natural ground level, same as the house, for drainage purposes.”

• Fences: In most cases they don’t require development approval. However, if over 2.1m they do. If they are for front yards, on corner blocks, advice is needed to take into account driver’s line of sight. • Retaining walls: Do not require development approval if under 1m, but it is a good idea to gain engineering advice. • Trees and fences: You need to consider future growth of trees and your neighbours. While it is a civil matter, council staff are able to provide limited advice in this area. • Rainwater tanks: Tanks that exceed 10 square metres (floor area) require approval from Council. Don’t let the overflow run into your neighbour’s property. If the tanks are required for fire fighting purposes they must be made from noncombustible material. • Decks: If they exceed 500mm in height or are within 900mm of a boundary, approval is required as privacy needs to be taken into account. In bushfire prone areas all decks need approval.

More people want to add another living area to the home, like a standalone entertaining area, but if attaching it to the house that too requires some forward thinking. “People need to consider if the house is steel or timber framed,” said Mr Morgan. “We generally need to go back and look at the original plans of the home to see if it is suitable to take the additional loads.” Council’s building surveyor, Mr Claus Williger said businesses tend to focus on the design of their own product and don’t consider where it will be built or what it is going to be connected or attached to. “You need to look at what it is attached to and the stormwater,” said Mr Williger. Mr Morgan encouraged people to contact their local council in order to gain as much information as possible before they start planning their construction. He said summer months tend to be their busiest for development applications, especially before Christams and encouraged people to plan ahead to avoid delays. “All development applications are generally looked at from a planning perspective first for example zoning, amenity etc and then follows the building rules assessment,” said Mr Morgan, who added Council are also occasionally obliged to seek advice from other authorities such as CFS or a heritage advisor. But even if you haven’t got a project planned for your home in the near future, it is suggested you routinely look at cleaning gutters, especially box gutters and ensuring stormwater pipes are connected in preparation for the rains. “Last summer when we had the big rains, 75 per cent of Council’s annual building complaints were received in one week and not surprisingly they were all stormwater related,” said Mr Morgan.

Barossa’s tropical paradise In an area prone to a frosty climate, Tanunda resident, Mr Steve Angel has managed to create a flourishing tropical paradise in his backyard. Moving into the property four years ago, Mr Angel began creating a microclimate to protect the tropical plants from their enemy – frost. Mr Angel built a wooden fence to create a courtyard around the plants and as the larger elephant ears and palm trees grew in height, he began planting more delicate trees under their protection. “When we first moved, a lot of people didn’t think we would be about to grow these plants here,” he said. “Everything is only three years old so I am still creating the microclimate but even when they are hit with frost, they die back and regenerate.” Mr Angel said the best way to prepare the plants for the Barossa’s climate is to buy them locally. “If you buy from local nurseries, the plants are already acclimatised,” he said. “A lot of the things in my garden have come from snippings from friends’ gardens – it is also a personal

touch because I always think of the person I got it from when I look at it.” Being an interior designer has helped Mr Angel with the garden layout, which he describes as an “all-contained room effect”. “For me, design doesn’t stop inside. Being an interior designer, I also like to extend it to the exterior.” The garden is set out as a series of rooms, an outdoor kitchen with a barbecue, a dining room with a table and a lounge room with a seating area and fire pit. “In this weather, I hate being in the house where it is cold,” he said. “A lot of people don’t use their gardens through winter either and we have a simple box, a fire pit, where we can roast legs of lamb in the cooler weather.” Mr Angel said his vision is to grow his plants bigger to create walls and develop his microclimate. “In my opinion, you can never finish a garden, as it grows, it changes.” Mr Angel’s garden will be on display to the public as part of Australia’s Open Garden Scheme on December 1 and 2.

Autumn Home Ideas 2012 Making a feature of ‘redundant’ spaces Have you got an inconvenient corner in one of your rooms that you are not quite sure what to do with? Older homes in particular have recessed spaces, often either side of the chimney, sometimes when the chimney itself has been removed or, in the kitchen where one of those vast, old fashioned ranges once stood. In the past we’ve tended to despair over these nooks, filling them with bookcases or other items of furniture, but in the search for a point of difference, interior designers and often enterprising home owners themselves are finding new and exciting ways to turn recessed spaces into innovative focal points for the room. Of course a great deal will depend on how deep and wide the recess is, and its place within the room.
Given the right circumstances they have been successfully converted into additional seating space, dining booths, even emergency accommodation for the unexpected guest. One suggestion is to drape heavy curtains in front of the recess – normally tied back – to provide a theatrical appearance. You can also let the curtains fall across if you happen to want a daytime nap without trailing off to the bedroom. The addition of light within the area allows you to get stuck into a favourite novel or magazine in perfect seclusion. A mirror covering the back wall of a recess is an ideal tool for creating an optical illusion. Plants placed in front will suggest an entrance to a garden; ornaments and the careful choice of floor coverings will give the impression of a passageway to another room.

The bright colours and traditional works by Aboriginals are making their way to homes and offices across the region. Aboriginal art reflects the dreaming, culture and traditions of the tribes in their particular part of the country. Each painting is unique and comes with a description of not only the artist but the story behind them. In many cases, the designs used in the works have been passed down from generations and reflect symbols and colours that would have been painted on women’s bodies for special ceremonies. The artists use acrylic paints on canvas, a contemporary adaptation to methods developed more than 40,000 years ago. While for years the women’s work was done
to tell a story and for private purposes, today it makes an interesting point in homes and offices. when you get into it,” said Peter. “Aboriginals are no different than local artists trying to get three to $400 for a painting. “Each painting comes with a story that is related to that painting.” Peter said Aboriginal artwork offers a different perspective than other artwork. “People buy art for varying reasons. When you buy Aboriginal art,
it comes with a bit of history of our country,” said Peter. “I’m actually quite surprised by the amount of people I have shown it to and like it.” Pe t e r s a i d i t i s important to look for authenticity of any artwork. Aboriginal art usually comes with a photograph of the painter with a signature and a description of the piece.

Autumn Home Ideas 2012 Couple transform Greenock cottage
Natasha and Scott Goldsmith at their Greenock property. They have transformed the cottage into a home which includes a low maintenance yard and plenty of living space.
Scott and Natasha Goldsmith purchased their Greenock house in 2006 as a spur of the moment decision, but the blank canvas has given them a chance to make it their own home. Situated on just over 1,000 square metres, the couple have managed to keep the yard nice and open and provide room for the shed, vegetable patch, chook house and entertainment area. Scott and Natasha have done quite a lot to the home that was built in 1996 and certainly have their own personal signature on it. “We’ve done everything,” said Scott. “The gravel down the driveway, a new room out the back, new pergola, a chicken area, room in the shed and opened up the kitchen.” One of the significant aspects that Scott and Natasha did was enclose the verandah on the back of the home and turn it into a second living area. “The back room, with office and entertainment area – we mainly live in there,” said Scott. “It is good having the two separate living areas.” Scott’s father and grandfather were both builders and Scott admits he learnt a lot from them. He was also a former owner of a landscape business. “It is very hard for someone to look at a blank piece of dirt and know what they want to achieve,” he said.

One aspect that Scott takes great pride in is the outside entertaining area, which he built from scratch. It includes a kitchen with an island bench for the barbecue and sufficient space for a table and the spa. “We love to entertain out there,” he said. “It took a while. For Natasha, she likes that the home is different to everyone else’s. “It’s not the normal standard brick home, I like that it is actually different,” said Natasha. “I love the home and the big back lawn and the fact that the house looks small.” Fond of entertaining, Natasha said the entertainment area is really nice and great when there’s children around. “It’s like being in the middle of nowhere, you can’t see the neighbours and we have all those gum trees at the back,” said Natasha. “It is a very private yard and you can sit back and relax.” Having done a lot of the improvements on the home by themselves, Natasha said there is a real sense of achievement seeing it completed. “It was pretty plain when we got here,” said Natasha. “The longer you live somewhere the more inspiration you get. I watch Better Homes and Gardens – it’s one of those things though you don’t know unless you try.”

Autumn Home Ideas 2012 Imagination comes to life Personal style is an important factor of any home and a good way to put your own stamp on a house is to build it from scratch. Diane Auricht decided to enlist the help of Bartsch Builders at Tanunda to make the home of her imagination a reality. The Tanunda home, which she moved into in November, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, is a combination of Diane’s own plans and a Cavalier Homes plan. The mixture of styles is unmistakable when walking through the doors, from the unique and modern exterior to the interior with distressed timber floors and Diane’s traditional furniture. Long windows throughout the house eliminate the need for lights during daylight hours and what seems like an ultra modern home on the outside,is actually warm and inviting on the inside. Diane’s love of a modern look with earthy materials was achieved with her personal furniture, pieces handed down to her and the cutting-edge design of the house. Her building experience – which Diane said could not have been better – came about when she went to Bartsch Builders with a plan and James Bartsch helped her get it down to an affordable size. “The building experience was great and because they’re local they were extremely accessible,” Diane said. Diane’s favourite area in the house is the combined living, dining, kitchen and small study space. “I wanted one living area because I find that’s how you live. “You tend to congregate around the kitchen.” Diane decorated the entire house with her sister, Peg, who Diane said had been a big help. She chose to integrate the study area into the main living area so she wouldn’t be tucked away into a corner of the house when accessing the computer. The colour scheme, which was chosen by Diane with the help of Chris Bartsch, is neutral to allow for

The home features distressed timber floors and Diane’s traditional furniture, like this hall stand. timelessness and the introduction of colour with accessories. The large windows and open spaces in the home achieve Diane’s brief of light and breeze. “It’s nice and bright so I don’t have to put many lights on and it cools down beautifully at night.” The kitchen’s large stand-alone bench space eliminates the need for the difficult cleaning of corners, a must for the self-confessed messy cook. The exterior styling with the corrugated iron roof and timber detailing comes from Diane’s love of natural, earthy materials. “I’ve always liked the modern look and it’s something that’s a little bit different.” After spending so much time working on the house, Diane’s plans lived up to her expectations. “I spent a lot of time imagining what it would look like and it turned out really well.”
