SPORTS PETANQUE On Sunday, March 4, the Gawler Petanque Club hosted members and friends of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for their annual challenge. It was perfect weather for a great afternoon of Petanque, fun and laughter with the Gawler Petanque Club being the champions (yet again) with a score of +56 against the Engineers’ score of -56. The afternoon began with

lunch, and we thank Bakers Delight, Gawler, for their kind donation of bread. After lunch we enjoyed two games of Petanque to decide the championship, and a fun shooting competition to finish. The club usually meets at 1.30 pm on Sundays at Essex Park, Victoria Terrace, Gawler (next to tennis courts) unless the forecast temperature is 30°C or over, when we meet at 9.30am.

SHOWCASING OUR LOCAL HEROES

Barossa and Light cricket By MIKE TEAKLE GAWLER Central (460) secured the A1 minor premiership with their mammoth 288-run win over South Gawler (272). In a dominant batting display, the Tigers had contributions from most of their side with only three players languishing in single figures. Ty Stock (112) finished the season as he started it with tons of runs and opening partner Jamie Mccafferty backed him up with 59 while Aaron King (87) just keeps delivering. A late innings cameo from Ben Tobitt (56) batting at nine ensured South’s miserable season lasted right to the end. David Golder’s six wickets came at a high price (96) for the Lions. Sandy Creek’s slim hopes of playing finals were dashed when Kapunda (196) bundled them out for just 154 despite a resilient 65 from Corey Roberts. Gilbert Valley (105) celebrated their return to the finals by ending last year’s premiers Nuri’s (78) season. Tom Vater was the best for the Bulls, taking 4/12 from 12 overs including both Tiger openers. Ben Burgess (81) guided Angaston (215) to a comfortable win over Tanunda (102 and 1/101) despite Christian Gattemayr (57 not out) standing firm in the Magpies second dig. Light Pass (201) claimed the A1 reserves minor premiership despite losing to Truro (245) as Truro captain Toby Eggleton (88) carried his team to victory and fourth place on the ladder. Last-placed Eudunda/Robertstown (9/242) defeated second-last-placed Greenock (9/219 declared) thanks to 102 not out from J R Mosey who was well supported by his captain David Cluse (54) and Sam Nietschke (43). Freeling’s comfortable 83-run win over Lyndoch sees them finish second and preparing for a second semi-final clash with Light Pass. Other notable performers include Sandy Creek Yellow’s Gavin Werner who carried his bat (166 not out) in the Cockatoo’s (264) win over Lyndoch (104). In the A4s, Nuri opener Andrew Reusch’s 72 not out wasn’t enough to prevent the Tigers losing to Mallala. Continuing the not out trend, Gilbert Valley’s Chris Busch (96 not out) came agonisingly

close to a century in the Bulls win over Eudunda/Robertstown.
