GOOD AFTERNOON ALL AND I HOPE EVERYONE IS SAFE AND WELL DURING THESE TOUGH TIMES. I HOPE BOTH SETS OF SUPPORTERS CAN ENJOY THE GAME FROM THEIR OWN HOMES THIS AFTERNOON. I’ll start by apologising for the unacceptable display on Tuesday night. I can assure you that the players know of my sheer displeasure in their performance and I will continue to strive to improve our predicament. I must say their reaction in training has been good and now it’s all about turning it into a result in a tricky game this afternoon. The quality is there but we just now apply ourselves and get points on the board, ultimately that is the only way we’ll get ourselves out of this situation. Make no mistake and I won’t sugar coat it, this is a really tough match. I have plenty of admiration for Gary and his staff, they’ll be right up there at the end of the season for sure. They move the ball well, they score plenty of goals, so if we aren’t up for it, it’s going to be a tough afternoon. All I can ask is that you stick with us and I’ll ensure the boys do everything they can to turn things round. We’re all going to have to rally together and be as one if we’re gonna get out of this. That’s enough from me, enjoy the game.

AFTERNOON ALL AND I HOPE YOU ARE ALL WELL. I want to welcome all the players and staff from Torquay United. It’s going to be a really difficult game this afternoon, they are obviously the team at the top, so it’s on us to show what we’re made of. Although it’s becoming a broken record, so we have to start putting in performances. Tuesday night was a low night for us all, so we have to try to do everything we can to lift the mood around the place. I can only apologise that we let you down again on Tuesday, the attitude is there but we have to start showing it in matches. We’ve got some new faces around the place and they are helping our cause. There’s a long way to go and I know we can do it, but we have to act now. It’s about looking ourselves in the mirror and taking the league and the matches by the scruff of the neck. Stick with us and we’ll do everything we can to turn things around. Bye for now,

BOREHAM WOOD POSTCARD Unfortunately for me with Boreham Wood being our closest away day, I’m always up at the crack of dawn on Boxing Day or New Year’s Day for our trip to Meadow Park. This means for me the standout feature of a trip to Boreham Wood is a big nap in the car all the way down the M1! It’s usually a nice day out as a good number of fans make the short journey and everyone’s always in good spirits around the Christmas period. However, I’ll be honest, Boreham Wood isn’t my most memorable trip so I’ll keep this one short and sweet. Visits: 2 Goals: 1 (they scored it) Celebrations (the chocolates): At least 25 As disappointed as I was to see us lose in our game against them on the 2nd, I mainly appreciated seeing us play after what felt like forever off with no Christmas games. However, I think it’s fair to say it was another Boreham Wood game that will not be going down in the history books!

Ian Hendon HENDON WAS A DEFENDER, WAS PRIMARILY AT RIGHT-BACK BUT SOMETIMES PLAYED IN THE CENTRE OR IN MIDFIELD. His career began with Spurs. He made his first-team debut in 1989 and made seven appearances for the club over the next four years, also going on to represent the three lions at under 21 level seven times. He had loan spells with Pompey , Orient and Barnsley before joining Orient on a permanent basis in the summer of 1993. He spent three and a half years at Brisbane Road, with a brief loan spell away at Birmingham City in 1995. He later played for Notts County, Northampton Town, Sheffield Wednesday, and Peterborough before joining then North London side Barnet FC in 2003 , having been on loan there six months previously. Joining up with his mentor Peter Shreeves, who had coached him at Tottenham and Sheffield Wednesday, he captained the club in their return to the Football League in his second season and remained a key player for four years. At the end of the 2006–07 season, Hendon faced a dilemma. Initially, he was not offered a new playing contract by Barnet but was given the chance to join Fairclough’s coaching staff. Nevertheless, he featured in the early fixtures of 07-08 season, before dropping back as new players arrived. He remained registered as a player until the end of the 2008/09 season when he retired as a player to go into management.

Performances improved under Hendon, he made a number of loan signings including Paul Furlong, , Jake Cole and Yannick Bolasie that helped to drag The Bees away from the relegation battle and to mathematical safety with four games to spare. He declared his desire to take the job permanently and was given the job on a two-year deal in April 2009. The Bees started the 2009/10 season in superb form and were top of the league at one point, but Hendon was sacked on the 28th April 2010 , after a disastrous run of form left the Bees in serious relegation trouble. The last game of Hendon’s reign was a 1–0 defeat to Accrington Stanley. On the 28th May 2010, he was appointed the manager of Dover Athletic, but just 18 days later quit the club to become assistant manager to his former Bees teammate Andy Hessenthaler at Gillingham. In July 2011 he was appointed, by new manager Sam Allardyce, as development coach at West Ham. In December 2012, he was promoted to the role of first-team coach following the departure of Wally Downes. On the 28th May 2015, it was announced Hendon would be returning to Brisbane Road as Leyton Orient’s new manager, following the club’s relegation to League Two. Following a poor run of results, Hendon was sacked in January 2016.

Every Friday between 2-3 pm, our very own Kevin Ziants hosts a Zoom call for the team. We learnt during the first lockdown how important it is to talk and see your friends, even if it’s just via a computer screen. Most of the team talk on a daily basis on messenger but seeing each other and having a laugh is battling COVIDs effect on the mind. Our 80-year-old players, Sid Tobias and Bob Fisher give their recollections of their footballing youth, very fascinating. We have new guests every week, most recently Ian Getty, from Walking Football Northern Ireland. Not forgetting our host and red wine connoisseur, Kevin Ziants. We had fabulous recollections from Peter Speroni, Mike Moate, Tom Bentley of being taken by their parents to their first matches. You can join us every Friday, everyone is welcome! TODAY’S OPPOSITION The history of Torquay United begins with the merging of Ellacombe, Babbacombe and Torquay Town. The elevation of Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle to the Southern League at the end of World War I prompted the emergence of a new Torquay United in 1921. We immediately joined the Western League and finished sixth in that first season. In 1925, we reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, only losing out to Reading after two replays. Two years later, we were crowned champions of the Western League and the club successfully applied for full membership to the Football League. Our first game was a 1-1 draw with Exeter at Plainmoor, with the players now changed from the early light and dark blue ensemble to a black and white kit similar to the famous Newcastle United strip. Now referred to as the Magpies, United’s first ever league goal was a penalty from Herbert Turner, but that credible early draw was swiftly followed by a painful 9-1 defeat
at Millwall. Our first league campaign ended with United finishing bottom of Division Three (South). Fortunately, our re-election to the league was immediately confirmed and the 1930s was a decade of quiet consolidation, with the club never finishing higher than tenth place. When the Football League resumed after World War II, United found a goalscoring hero in the form of Sammy Collins, who helped us finally break the top-ten duck in 1949. Collins would go on to become the club’s record scorer with 219 goals from 379 games. The famous Yellow and Blue shirts we all love today became a reality in the 1954-55 season and the new-look kit played its role in a fabulous run to the fourth round of the FA Cup. After humbling the mighty Leeds United 4-0, a record 21,908 crammed into Plainmoor for a narrow loss to Huddersfield, and that remains our highest ever attendance. The new era of manager Eric Webber saw United come within goal difference of winning promotion to Division Two for the first time ever but we were pipped by Alf Ramsay’s Ipswich Town on the final day of the 1956-57 season. A change to the league structure and abolition of the regionalised system placed United in the newly-formed Division Four and the date of April 27, 1960 would finally see the club win promotion from the bottom league. Players like Don Mills and the Northcott brothers of Tommy and George were the heroes of the day and we survived our first season in Division Three before dropping down the following year.
The emergence of young goalscorer Robin Stubbs kept us near the top of Division Four and 1965 paired us with the mighty Tottenham Hotspur in the third round of the FA Cup. Just over 20,000 people witnessed a stunning 3-3 draw, courtesy of a brace from Stubbs. Although the replay at White Hart Lane was a heavy loss, the episode was a fitting end to 15 years of Webber management. Frank O’Farrell swept in as his replacement and guided the Gulls back to Division Three in 1966 and we were only denied a place in Division Two by a poor finish to the 196768 season. We were eventually relegated back to Division Four in 1972 and it would be 19 years before the club graced the third tier again. The 1970s was something of a non-event but Bruce Rioch’s arrival as boss coincided with another run to the fourth round of the FA Cup, where we lost out in a 3-2 thriller with Sheffield Wednesday. We then hit rock-bottom in 1985, finishing at the foot of Division Four for the first time in 57 years. That campaign of misery was immediately followed by another two disastrous seasons and we were extremely fortunate to earn reelection to the Football League. The introduction of a relegation system to the Conference was obviously a concern in the 1986-87 season and we only escaped the drop by holding Crewe to a 2-2 draw on the final day, in a match that was held up by defender Jim McNichol being bitten by a police dog named Bryn. Paul Dobson would go on to equalise for the Gulls in the time subsequently added on. Cyril Knowles assumed the helm for the following season and steered United to the newly-created play-offs, but we lost out to Swansea 5-4 on aggregate. Among those helping the Gulls to battle away at the right end of the table was teenage winger Lee Sharpe, who was sold to Manchester United at the end of the campaign. The Sherpa Van Trophy became familiar to the Yellow Army when Dean Edwards scored twice over a two-legged semifinal against his hometown club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and took United to Wembley, but Bolton were too strong in the Final. A wonderful start to the 1990-91 season took us clear at the top before Christmas but a lull in form saw John Impey introduced as manager. A finish of seventh place booked a place in the play-offs and Burnley were defeated in the semi-final.
The Kevin Hodges era briefly stabilised the club and we even flirted with promotion after a record-breaking run of eight straight wins but a late stutter thwarted automatic promotion. Another play-off campaign beckoned but Colchester triumphed at Wembley to deny United. Wes Saunders came in as boss and certainly boosted the financial coffers, selling star striker Rodney to Crewe for halfa-million. On the pitch, we just missed out on the play-offs in Saunders’ second season but a dip in form led to Colin Lee taking over. The struggle continued, however, and we eventually needed a desperate last-day win at Barnet to avoid relegation. Next into the hot-seat was Leroy Rosenior and he would guide a talented young side to promotion in a thrilling 2004-05 season. Sadly, the return to English football’s third tier was brief and a period of decline for the club resulted in a disastrous campaign that saw us relegated out of the Football League in 2007, the first time in 80 years we had been a Conference outfit. A major revamp behind the scenes rescued the club from the brink of extinction and a new consortium containing lottery winner Paul Bristow helped to stabilise a financial crisis at Plainmoor. On the pitch, the Gulls were left disappointed at Wembley again, this time losing the FA Trophy Final to Ebbsfleet. The pain was heightened by a play-off semi-final loss to bitter rivals Exeter City, but the following year was one to savour. Former midfielder Paul Buckle was in charge and he steered the Gulls to the fourth round of the FA Cup and a play-off final win over Cambridge. The Yellows were back in the Football League and a season of consolidation was followed by two thrilling campaigns. The final year under Paul Buckle ended with United reaching the League 2 play-off final at Old Trafford but Stevenage proved too strong. The 2011-12 season, the first under Martin Ling, the new manager brilliantly rebuilt his squad and only missed automatic promotion on the final day before losing to Cheltenham in the play-offs. Sadly, Martin Ling fell ill midway through last season and Alan Knill took over on a temporary basis, steering the Gulls away from relegation on the final day of a traumatic campaign. The club then parted company with Ling and installed Knill as permanent boss.
Wembley once again beckoned and Blackpool were the opposition. Edwards and Wes Saunders scored in a 2-2 draw and goalkeeper Gareth Howells would score in the penalty shoot-out before Dave Bamber missed for the Tangerines.
The Alan Knill era proved unsuccessful and a poor start to his permanent tenure ended with the club sacking their manager in December 2014. Chris Hargreaves was appointed boss in the January but the mountain was too much to climb, and United suffered relegation to the Conference.
A managerial merry-go-round resulted in Neil Warnock briefly taking the reins to rescue the plummeting Gulls from a double relegation out of the Football League. Unfortunately, the pattern was set and United finished bottom in 1996, only escaping relegation because Conference Champions Stevenage Borough failed to meet League ground regulations.
Having finished the 2014/15 campaign in mid-table, the club faced a challenging summer as our very existence hung in the balance at one stage. In the end, a consortium of local business people, fronted by chairman David Phillips took over and began the task of building some solid foundations for future growth.

United’s board and management insisted that their stay in the sixth tier would be a brief one, and Owers was immediately given the funds to put together a side capable of bouncing back at the first attempt.
The Board of Directors appointed former player Kevin Nicholson to turn the season around and save the club from relegation. At one point United were twelve points from safety but with the addition of some canny signings, Kevin Nicholson and his squad were able to avoid relegation from the National League. ‘The Great Escape’ was celebrated with a 2-0 win away to Bromley. The next season proved to be equally as difficult as the team found it difficult to turn the result their way. Many games were lost by just one goal. Just like the season before, Kevin Nicholson and his coaching team were able to turn the season around and stay in the National League. The summer of 2016/17 was a season of change at the Club. Kevin Nicholson signed fourteen new players to revamp the playing squad. After three defeats in the first four games, Kevin Nicholson and the Club parted ways. Assistant manager Robbie Herrera took the reins and led the team for the next six games picking up two points. After an extensive search for a new management team, the Club appointed Bath City manager Gary Owers as Head Coach, and former Reading U23 coach Martin Kuhl as his Assistant on September 13th 2017. Despite strengthening United’s squad with a number of signings, Owers was unable to lift United out of the

However, one win in the next six games, culminating in a 1-0 home defeat by Chippenham, signalled the departure of Owers, and within 24 hours, former Yeovil Town and Bristol City manager Gary Johnson was announced as his replacement. Their was surprise and delight in equal measure amongst United’s fan base at the appointment, and Johnson’s impact was immediate. Three wins and three draws preceded a record-breaking ten match winning streak, which lifted the club up from 14th into 1st place. What seemed like a season-long battle for top spot ensued, with United, aided by the goals of reinvigorated striker Jamie Reid, fighting it out with Woking for pole position on a weekly basis. As the season entered it’s final stages though, it was Johnson’s men who held their nerve as Woking faltered. A late equaliser in the match between the two sides looked to be vital, and sure enough, a 2-0 victory over Eastbourne the following weekend secured the club’s first championship title since 1927, and with it, promotion back to the National League at the first attempt. With the club now in better shape than it has been for many years on and off the field, Torquay United’s loyal band of supporters can finally look ahead to the future with optimism once again.

Three wins and three draws preceded a record-breaking ten match winning streak, which lifted the club up from 14th into 1st place. Under his guidance they remained there for the majority of the season, before finally clinching the National League South title, and with it promotion, in April 2019.

Shaun MacDonald SHAUN MACDONALD EMERGED FROM THE SHADOWS TO BECOME ONE OF THE KEY MEMBERS OF UNITED’S 2018/19 TITLE-WINNING SQUAD. Following spells with Gateshead and Blyth Spartans, MacDonald joined the club in July 2018 following a successful post-season trial. After sharing the ‘keeping duties during the opening months of the campaign, MacDonald would go on to become the club’s undisputed first-choice keeper. Shaun was recognised for his brilliance during the season by being named as the National League South’s ‘Player of the Month’ for December 2018.
Kyle Cameron AFTER JOINING THE CLUB IN JULY 2018 Kyle Cameron would go on to become one of the division’s star performers as United swept towards the 2018/19 National league South title. After spending his youth career with Newcastle United. Cameron spent time on loan at Workington, York City, and Queen of the South and has also been capped by Scotland twice at Under-21 level. A natural left-footer, Kyle put in a number of commanding displays throughout the season and notched his first goal for the club with a towering header in the vital 1-0 away win at Concord Rangers in March 2019. Kyle was rewarded for a fantastic campaign by being named in the 2018/19 National League South ‘Team of the Season’.
Asa Hall MIDFIELDER ASA HALL BECAME THE FIRST UNITED CAPTAIN IN OVER 90 YEARS TO LIFT A CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY following the 2018/19 National League South title success. Hall brings a wealth of experience to the squad having made over 300 first team appearances turning out for teams such as Luton Town, Oxford United, Shrewsbury Town, and Cheltenham Town. He was part of Gary Johnson’s squad that earned the Robins a return to the Football League in 2016, prior to being reunited with his former manager again last season. Asa’s calming presence, not to mention important goals, helped steer United towards the National League South summit last season, and he was recognised for his influential performances by being named in the 2018/19 National league South ‘Team of the Season’. United’s captain will now be hoping that history repeats itself once again as he leads his team back into the National League in 2019/20.
Danny Wright ALTHOUGH DANNY HAS NEVER PLAYED IN A UNITED SHIRT BEFORE Stints at the top tier of non-league football with Cambridge, Wrexham, Forest Green, Gateshead and Kidderminster had seen Danny earn himself a reputation as one of the most feared strikers at that level, however the Football League remained uncharted waters, until his move to Johnson’s Cheltenham Town saw the Gloucestershire outfit reclaim their League Two status at the first time of asking. Aided by the likes of future United colleagues Asa Hall and Aaron Downes, Wright’s 22 goals in 44 games played a large part in seeing The Robins secure the title by twelve points, with the target man proving equally effective in the EFL, as he notched 11 goals during in first season amongst the sacred 92. A move back into the National League with an ambitious Solihull Moors side in 2018 would once again see the best brought out in player and team, with another double-figure tally seeing Tim Flowers’ men go within touching distance of securing promotion. Danny jumped at the chance of renewing his successful partnership his former Cheltenham boss – with a Football League return very much on the agenda for all concerned.

Having parted company with former manager Jim Gannon earlier in the week, Stockport County have appointed their new manager. Gannon departed the Hatters last Thursday, having joined the club in January 2016, leaving 5 years and two days after originally being appointed. Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll has described his recent isolation period due to Covid 19 as “probably the worst seven days of my life”. The former Hitchin Town, Bedford Town, St Albans City, Dunstable Town and Hemel Hempstead Town midfielder missed his sides’ 4-2 loss away at Maidenhead United on Tuesday because of a further Covid case in his household. The former Stevenage manager said that he was hit hard by it, but feels a lot better now, but still feels tired and aching. Sarll joined the Somerset side in June 2019, guiding the Glovers to a fourth place finish in the National League last season, on a points per game basis, before of course being knocked out of the playoffs at the quarter final stage by Barnet at Huish Park.
Marcus Bignot has been appointed the interim manager of Aston Villa Women. During his playing career, Bignot played for the likes of Telford United, Kidderminster Harriers, Crewe Alexandra, Bristol Rovers, Queens Park Rangers, Rushden and Diamonds, Brackley Town and Solihull Moors, as well as having a decent managerial career at the same time, managing Birmingham City Ladies and Solihull Moors. After retiring from playing in 2016, he managed Grimsby Town, Barrow and Chester, before arriving at National League North side Guiseley in May 2018. The 46 year old former defender will remain as co manager of the Lions alongside Russ O’Neill, as well as retaining his coaching role within the England Under 19 side.

In a club statement, Manchester United have revealed their disgust at the racial abuse received online by two of the clubs players, Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial, after Wednesday nights’ embarrassing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sheffield United at Old Trafford. The result was a major blow to their title challenge this season, with both players having started the game, with Tuanzebe being substituted off with 8 minutes of normal time still to play. Several of the duo’s teammates, as well as former Red Devils’ legend Rio Ferdinand and the club itself (through a statement), have all responded via their respective social media accounts, showing their disgust towards the comments. Charity Kick It Out also responded, saying that those responsible must face the consequences.
Gary Neville, the co owner of League 2 side Salford City, has offered a refund to Cambridge United. This comes after United had already arrived at the Peninsula Stadium for Tuesday night’s scheduled fixture, which was subsequently called off as a result of a last minute pitch inspection, revealing a frozen pitch. The new date for the rearranged fixture has yet to be arranged, and the exact amount that will be given is unclear as of time of writing. United currently sit top of the table, one point off of second placed Forest Green Rovers, having played one match more. City, however, sit in seventh place, the bottom playoff spot, three points off of the automatic promotion places and four off of Cambridge.
League 1 side Doncaster Rovers have signed former Tottenham Hotspur player John Bostock. Subject to a controversial £700,000 transfer to Spurs from Crystal Palace in 2008, Bostock only made four appearances at White Hart Lane, none of which were in the top flight. Instead, he was loaned out several times, notably to Brentford, Hull City, Sheffield Wednesday, Swindon Town and Canadian MLS side Toronto FC. After his release in 2013, he had a spell in Belgium with Royal Antwerp and OH Leuven, before two spells in France with Lens and Toulouse, with a spell at Turkish side Bursaspor in between. After spending some time on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, he has now returned to England on a permanent basis.

THE BEES HAD A GLORIOUS CHANCE TO OPEN THE SCORING AFTER THREE MINUTES AS ALFIE PAVEY WAS SLIPPED IN ON GOAL, HIS STRIKE WAS SAVED BY THE DOVER ‘KEEPER. UP THE OTHER END, AHKEEM ROSE WENT THROUGH ON GOAL BUT DRAGGED HIS SHOT WIDE OF SCOTT LOACH’S GOAL.

It was soon three as Rose picked up a loose ball and volleyed past Loach, leaving him with no chance. The Bees had a mountain to climb and tried to reduce the arrears immediately after half time, as James Dunne had an effort deflected behind. It was 3-1 with half-hour left to play as half time substitute Michael Petrasso scrambled one home from a cross into the box. Flowers’ side continued to try and find a way back into the match but couldn’t create any real clear cut chances, as the game became scrappy on the difficult pitch. Dover almost sealed it with two minutes on the clock, but Loach made a fine stop with his legs before the ball rebounded onto the post. Ultimately, the Bees left themselves with too much to do and left Kent with nothing.
HOW IT HAPPENED The next chance came the way of Tim Flowers’ side, as good hold up play from Pavey allowed Myles Judd to strike just wide of the far post. But the next attack saw the hosts open the scoring, as Will De Havilland poked home on the rebound after Loach made an initial stop from a flicked header. It was a carbon copy just minutes later, as the Bees were punished from another set-piece as De Havilland poked home from almost the same position to add a second goal of the evening.
