ABOUT THE CONFERENCE (2023)

The tenth annual Get Engaged: Student Action and Youth Leadership Conference brings together 105 students and staff members from across the Open Society University Network (OSUN) of partner institutions, including the following:

Get Engaged: Student Action and Youth Leadership Conference is organized by the OSUN Civic Engagement Initiative in partnership with the CEU Community Engagement Office, the Bard College Center for Civic Engagement, and coordinators from across OSUN.

The conference focuses on building a global network of student leaders who are equipped to act in and tangibly impact their communities. Get Engaged exposes students to a wide range of skills, ideas, and experiences to help them lead community-based projects, hone leadership styles, and network with international partners. The conference provides an inspirational and practical space that encourages young people to grow in their roles as agents for change.

The Open Society University Network (OSUN), envisioned as a longlasting network of diverse institutions committed to addressing global challenges collaboratively, offers a new model for worldwide higher education. The network is global in demographic and geographic scope, so it is active where it is needed most. It strives to integrate curricula and research across institutions and to incorporate civic engagement into higher education.

With a belief in the public purpose of higher education, civic engagement across OSUN promotes best practices and bold new initiatives to help students, faculty, and institutions realize their full potential as community actors and educators.

The Civic Engagement Initiative (CEI) is building an international community of higher education institutions that strives to center civic and community engagement boldly within universities while creating pathways for institutions and communities to collaborate in responding to urgent shared concerns.

We respond to the mental health crisis facing Palestinian youth through the use of art therapy, meditation, self-expressive painting, self-reflection, and nature.

We make science accessible to Palestinians with little or no prior access to these resources by hosting events and educational campaigns about physical and mental health, both on campus and in marginalized areas across Palestine.

We mobilize the Lebanese authorities to remove asbestos waste in Chekka, Lebanon through art justice and advocacy campaigns.

Sara Yousef Mansour, Gun Violence in Ain El Helwe: Emergency First Aid and Psychological First Aid

We provide first aid training to teachers and therapeutic activities for children in Lebonon’s Ain El Helwe Palestinian refugee camp in response to widespread gun violence and the trauma it causes.

We improve the psychosocial wellbeing of vulnerable refugee children in Afghanistan and Lebanon through formal and informal educational sessions.

We provide temporary shelter to people in Aleppo, Syria by using debris from the February 6 earthquake and ongoing war.

AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN BULGARIA

We organized charity events and now teach English to low-income students.

AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL ASIA

Salima Almazbekova, Jash Kanattar (Young Wings from Kyrgyz)

We coach high school students in rural Kyrgyzstan in problem-solving, public speaking, leadership, and diplomatic and critical thinking skills through a Model United Nations conference simulation.

We showcase female leaders in IT by highlighting their experiences and challenges through video and audio podcasts.

Shakhzoda Mirakova, EcoChange

We raise awareness in Uzbekistan of practical ways of saving the environment and developing a deeper connection with the natural world.

Hawa Taban, Leadership Program for Kyrgyz Youth (LPKY)

We provide leadership training to 30 male and female high school students in Osh, Kyrgyzstan.

Sophia Siddiqi, AWIDC (Afghan Women in Data Conference)

We empower Afghan women in Kyrgyzstan to pursue careers in data and STEM through workshops, conferences, and networking events.

We help students who have faced forced immigration to share their stories toward creating a sense of belonging and community for them at BCB.

Sanskriti Shrestha, Karow Language Project

We teach German language to refugees in Karow, Berlin, to enable their navigation of a new and alien world.

We started as a WhatsApp group during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and have grown into a worldwide platform leading workshops on academics, health, and skill acquisition for children and teens.

We offer an in-person empowerment seminar dedicated to uplifting black women and girls through documentary filmmaking, writing, and discussion on systemic issues we face such as colorism and texturism.
