THE MOST BASIC MINDFULNESS TOOL (THAT REALLY WORKS) BY KEALAH PARKINSON
It’s the halfway point in my 60-Day Journey through MiniMindfulness, & the tools I’ve been using have been both mundane & transcendental—& sometimes surprisingly both. I’ve learned that I can be more mindful than I realized; that I can actually meditate (yes, even with 2 small children underfoot); that my mindful practice is called a “practice” for good reason, since I still need redirection in getting it right, or rather in accepting it for what it is. The tool I used today is actually quite mundane. In fact, it is the most rudimentary tool in my toolbox, one I use when I am at my most frazzled. Yet it can do wonders to center me. This tool is simply the act of making a specific statement— stating whatever I am doing in that moment. I call these “Kealah is” statements. Insert your own name & try it today: “(Your Name) is … reading.” “(Your Name) is … sitting.” Etcetera. Keeping these statements as simple as possible makes them even more effective, I find. It takes my entire consciousness & focuses it directly in the here & now. It’s profoundly simple, & yet it really does work to center me, almost as wholly as the sacred 3 conscious breaths I have blogged about previously. Today, I used it very briefly to re-focus during high chaos: computer in my lap, cat nudging my arm, television blaring kids’ shows, noisy kids’ toys competing for background noise, both kids alternating between loud laughter & whimpering whining & demanded requests that continuously crashed my focus away from the deadline-driven writing I was trying my darnedest to complete. “Kealah is … sitting,” I thought, & it all faded into the background. “Kealah is … typing.” And my fingers clicked away. Crown Point Auto Repair and O’Reilly Auto Parts Help Out A Local Couple Bill Wilson, owner of Crown Point Auto Repair, saw a plea on Facebook from a couple looking for an honest mechanic. A month ago the Indiana couple broke down on their way home after their Dodge Ram pickup overheated on Interstate 80-94. They were stuck there for over 3 hours before they were able to let it cool down enough to drive it to a friend’s house who was close to there. Wilson contacted them and towed it to his shop at 1510 N Main Street. After inspecting the vehicle, he then noticed that the vehicle needed much more work than what the couple would be able to afford to have done, which included the A/C compressor, a belt, a bearing and some
suspension work. He called Mandy, the O’Reilly Auto Parts Store Manager, spoke to her about the couple and their vehicle, the store was able to donate the parts to Wilson and he donated the labor to have their vehicle fixed. They partnered up to repair the couple’s vehicle. The repairs ended up totaling $2000, four times more than they could afford, they were not aware of all of the repairs being done, free of charge to them. When the couple came to Crown Point Auto Repair to pick up their vehicle, they left without paying a cent that day. Wilson stated, “It was the right thing to do.”
