THE FAMILY CAREGIVER

M

BY BARBARA SMALL

Long-distance Caregiving

any families are dispersed across the country – or even around the world – which can make caregiving a family member even more challenging. I experienced this first-hand when my own parents were both ill and needing care. They lived near Duncan; I lived in Victoria; my sister in Prince George; and my brother on the Sunshine Coast. So, whenever we were needed for caregiving, I drove up, my sister flew in and my brother took the ferry. We did this for two years. Long-distance caregiving often involves specific concerns different from those of families who live near each other. Below are some suggestions for making caring from a distance easier: • Call the care recipient often and regularly. Listen closely to their comments or complaints, and ask questions that can alert you to changes in their health or routines. • Establish a support network in your family member’s hometown with contact people who can check in with your family member on a regular basis and alert you if they notice any changes. This person could be a close friend, neighbour, minister, doctor or others who regularly visit them. Keep this person’s contact information with you at all times and ensure that they have your contact information. • Gather information about services, resources and other options for care available in your family member’s community. Do this in advance, even if you don’t need these services right now. Have the information on hand before a crisis happens. Use the Internet, check with their local health unit or pick up a copy of the local telephone directory. • When you do visit, make the most of your time. Plan in

advance for what you need to accomplish during the visit, in addition to visiting with your family member. • Some communities offer telephone assurance programs, usually staffed by volunteers, who check in on frail and disabled persons living alone. Many volunteer organizations also have friendly visitor programs that provide regular visits to people who aren’t able to get out. • In a non-emergency situation, evaluate whether you need to travel or if someone locally can handle the situation? This will free you for emergency situations or times when it is essential for you to be there. • If another family member lives locally, and you are not the primary caregiver, you can still help by researching available resources and information about the illness or condition, offering to help financially or being an emotional support for the primary caregiver. Ask them what their biggest stressors are and see if SL there is a way you can help relieve these, even from afar. Next issue: BC Caregiving Guide, 2nd edition. he world was a different place when a team of Canadian hockey players lined up in Toronto against the Soviet Union on the night of September 4, 1972. An ocean away in Munich, Canadian Olympic Track and Field coach Don Steen was among a group of Olympic coaches and athletes who wanted to watch the game. “Because the game took place in the middle of the night in Germany, access to and from the Village was restricted by locked gates so we had to resort to climbing fences to get to the media centre.” After watching Team Canada’s vic-

tory, the Canadians made their way back to their dorms. “We jumped back over the fence and went to bed. Unbeknownst to us, shortly after we went over the fence, Palestinian rebels did the same. I got woken up by a couple of athletes banging on my door and declaring all hell was breaking loose.” “Our dorm was right next to the Koreans who were beside the Israelis. I peeked around the corner of the Korean building and saw this guy wearing a hat and carrying a machine gun, obviously one of the rebels. He was close enough for me to talk to. A policeman pulled me back and, within minutes, the Village was on lockdown. The rest

of the story is history. Despite the tragedy, the athletes did not want to leave, and continued on with the competition, though security really tightened up at that point.” Having a front row seat to one of the most notorious terrorist attacks in modern history is just one act in the remarkable life of one of Canada’s greatest competitors and coaches. Born in 1935 into an athletic family, Don grew up in Vancouver first, and later Burnaby, attending school in both cities. Though he became best known in the field of athletics (track and field) his first love was basketball. “I was very heavily into basketball,”

says Don. “I went to Sunday school as a youngster and the son of the minister had been a professional athlete in California. He took me under his wing and was very instrumental in teaching me the game, though I have to say I didn’t need much convincing. When I was going to Lord Byng High School, my basketball buddies and I used to pick the lock of the women’s gym at UBC. The security guy got so tired of catching us there, after a while, he just told us to make sure we locked up when we left.” While playing for Burnaby South, Don achieved a scoring record during the provincial championship tournament that stood for 11 years; was named tournament MVP once; and twice named to the all-star team. He even made it onto the Vancouver Clover Leafs, a Senior-A men’s basketball team, when he was just 16 years old. Don also competed in high school rugby and track and field and continued his winning ways by representing Canada in both rugby and track and field. After graduation, Don accepted a track and field scholarship to attend the University of Oregon, where he obtained both a Bachelor and Master’s of Science degree. During his time there, Don was coached by Bill Bowerman and had a teammate named Phil Knight. That pair would later team up to form a little shoe company called Nike. While at university, Don had one final hurrah with the sport of basketball. When he was entering his last year of college eligibility, he asked his track coach if he could try out for the basketball team. “My coach did not think that I had any chance to make the team, so he told me to go ahead. Well I did make the team, much to his chagrin, and really enjoyed playing that year.” Though Don set the Canadian record for the decathlon, a grueling two day-long competition involving 10 different track and field events, he was denied a chance to compete in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 due to a lack of funding for Canadian athletes.

This became more than a full-time job, communicating with hundreds of schools all over the province and all the various sports commissions, and putting on championships for the many sporting groups.” Along the way, Don became involved with BC Blind Sports and Recreation Association. In 10 years, I can see them all bragging about how much stronger they are now than they were when they were in their sixties. “Working with these athletes has been very rewarding for me, though you need to find new ways to do things. When you are teaching a discus thrower who is visually impaired, you cannot just tell them to watch you. Location Location Location L Housing

BY VERNICE SHOSTAL

ike buying a new home, selecting a retirement residence is an important and personal decision that requires time and thought. Location is often a priority. For some, relocating to be near a support network, usually a son or a daughter, is a comfortable choice. At times, it may even mean moving to another province. A location in the hub of downtown close to all amenities may be a priority for some, while others are happiest staying close to their own neighbourhood, where they can stay in touch with friends and an environment familiar to them. A select few may even prefer a location with a natural setting offering a lake or ocean view. To be near her son and daughter-in-law, Betty Lunn relocated from downtown Victoria to the Alexander Mackie in Langford. “It wasn’t an easy decision,” says Betty, but because her family had a long way to come to see her, they encouraged her to move closer to where they lived. “Why shouldn’t I be near them?” she finally decided. Living near her family, Betty is happy with the change. Being near a loved one makes all the difference. At the Nanaimo Seniors Village, Irene Bonkowski says, “My husband was placed into the care building at Nanaimo Seniors Village, and I was finding it harder and harder to get up to see him with bus schedules and rides, so I decided it made sense to move into the assisted living building, so we could be closer to each other.” The change suits Irene perfectly. Both Gwen Colbourne and Tom Howe moved from Vancouver Island to the Royale Astoria in Coquitlam. While Gwen has several children in Coquitlam, Tom has a grandson nearby. Another factor in their choice of residence is the flat land. Both have scooters and enjoy the level terrain – a perfect location. All the way from Quebec, Kay Roth, a resident at Cedar Springs Retirement Residence in North Vancouver says, “When my husband passed away two years ago, I found myself in our condo in Montreal with my closest family members living in Vancouver. I had to make the difficult decision to leave the city where I had lived my entire life as well as life-long friends. Though it was a difficult decision to make, I realized that being close to my family made the most sense and with the help of my son, daughter and daughter-in-law, I made it happen.” Kay agrees that “Change is very difficult, 8120 1

especially when you get older, however, the fact that I always focus on the joy that today will bring helps immensely.” Verna Bridge chose the Legion Manor in Victoria to live closer to her daughter. “It was too much travelling for them if I was going to visit at their place,” she says. “They would have to come and get me and bring me back. They have a life, too.” Moving to Legion Manor makes it much handier for them, Verna says. Veteran Harold Wheeler chose the Legion Manor because of its proximity to amenities. Harold and his wife, Elsie, moved from their acreage in Sooke to the Legion Manor because “it is near a little village, near a hospital and other amenities.” The Berwick Retirement Community near most of the places they frequented was the perfect location for Les Moreside and his wife, Gwen. “This was handy and familiar to us,” says Les, “medical doctor, dentist, bank, principal issues on a regular basis day by day.” Les still drives and continues to golf at two of his favourite courses near the residence. Nancy Duncan chose Berwick Royal Oak because it was near her old neighbourhood. “Living in the area and attending the Commonwealth Centre regularly, Berwick Royal Oak really appealed to me.” For Nancy, continuing to regularly visit her local recreation centre was a priority. Jeannine McDonell and Sylvia Markell, two residents of Summerhill in North Vancouver, also chose the location because it was near where they had lived before. “I lived within eight blocks of here for 50 years,” says Jeannine, “so everything was familiar.” The bus service right outside the door is the same bus she took to work every day. She knew the doctor, dentist, library, church and everything else she was familiar with. Sylvia Markell says, “The location is perfect. I can walk everywhere and it is close to my doctor and dentist. Moving here was almost like moving next door.” Lifetime residents of Burnaby, Bob and Virginia Rutherford, liked the location of the Mulberry, where they are near the church, garden club, financial institutions, doctors, bridge club and dear friends. A large stone on their original homestead near a school close by explains the history of the “living orchard” and the Rutherford family – a pretty good reason to stay in Burnaby. On Friday, July 19 at the Edgemont Concert, featuring The Adam Woodall Band, more than 200 seniors from recreation centres and retirement residences around Vancouver got giggy with it in the first-ever Seniors Flashmob. Organized by Jennifer Abbott, founder of Hear at Home Mobile Hearing Aid Clinic, the Seniors Flashmob had to be kept under wraps until the last minute to preserve the element of surprise. The oldest participant was 94 years old, and it was open to seniors at all mobility levels. Activities co-ordinators at various facilities said that the seniors, who had been rehearsing for months, had never been so excited about an event! portant. They moved from Ladysmith to Oak Tree Manor in Nanaimo because it was an ideal location according to Alfred – right downtown where they are blessed with many beautiful parks. Since the building sits on top of a hill, residents have a beautiful view from the large deck, says Alfred. “We can see the ferries and sailing ships coming back and forth. Nature has a lot to do with it.” Seniors choosing residences because of location do so because of proximity to something important to them – living close to loved ones, enjoying the convenience of amenities and a city bus (even though the residence may have its own bus), staying close to their old community, or choosing a natural environment. Although factors such as cost, availability and level of care are important issues to consider in choosing a retirement residence, a suitable location helps seniors continue to enSL joy the good life.

hile some people resist a move into a residence for fear of losing their independence, it is a decision more seniors are choosing to make every year. The various residences one can choose from need to be checked out, evaluated, and selected based on a wide variety of criteria to make the best choice for each individual. Many seniors are fortunate to be able to enlist the aid of family members to help them with their decisions. According to Wayne Melvin, General Manager of Berwick on the Lake in Nanaimo, “Right now we find that approximately 60 per cent of our incoming inquiries originate from adult children looking at options for their parents.” For some people, much of the choice has been taken away from them by a bad turn of health, but this is not true in every instance of those who are ill. “If coming from acute care, in many cases, the senior is obliged to take the first bed available, so choice often gets ruled out,” says Loraine Coffin, General Manager of Renfrew Care Centre in Van-

couver. “In some instances, we do have a potential resident who is still in the home environment. Many times they are not well enough to come to visit the facility, and rely on the family to assist in the decision making.” Though there is always the potential for things to go sideways, people working on the front lines feel the more involved family members are in the process of making a choice the better. According to Christa Castillo, Director of Sales for Sunrise Senior Living in Victoria, “The families guide and provide the reality of the situation when the parent thinks they really do not need assistance. More support from family members assures the seniors they are not alone. Especially in cases when there is memory impairment; it is good to have someone represent the needs and preferences of the senior.” Wayne agrees, adding, “Many times family will be able to ask questions or raise concerns that may not have dawned on the potential resident.” Another consideration that must be

taken into account in this multi-cultural province is providing care for seniors from different backgrounds. Sometimes this can complicate the care process greatly, and not just due to language barriers. The care of senior family members is not universal across the world, and expectations are just as diverse as the lands from which these seniors originate. “Many cultural groups experience a very hard transition to care for their parent,” says Loraine. “It has been an expectation of certain cultures that the child or spouse would always be there to provide care, but at the point of admission to a facility such as ours, the parent’s care is far more complex and demanding than home support can provide. Added to that is the increased stress of working outside the home and family pressures. We provide flexibility in visiting hours and try to accommodate families, within reason, to participate in their loved one’s care. We value the family input. In many instances, the family can be of excellent assistance when behaviours are challenging.” No matter the amount of care required

or type of residence, one thing everyone agrees on is that good communication and an honest, open approach works best. The senior needing to move, the family members trying to help and the facility workers themselves all have one thing in mind: finding the best living situation for each individual. At Sunrise in Victoria some families visit first without the parent. “Sometimes we do have children come ahead or have a tour of the home first,” says Christa. During those times, the children can be very honest and realistic of their parent’s situation and their needs without embarrassing their parent. And then we ask them to come for a second tour with the parent and tour them again with a more resident-focused tour. Because the seniors are always nervous or have previous perceptions of a care home, this is the time to gently introduce our home.” Pre-planning is important says Wayne: “The best way to make things work well is cooperation and collaboration. Bringing everyone together to discuss the process in advance is always best. Talking about the transition process, from downsizing to selling their homes, arranging how their new home will be furnished, or planning for future care needs.” Each family is unique and not all siblings see eye to eye on even basic issues, let alone major decisions regarding the care of their parents. While no personnel at a residence would want to interfere with family dynamics, each has its own techniques to help siblings when there are disagreements. “When there are challenges between family members, we always identify the Power of Attorney and the Healthcare Representative when it comes to making decisions on behalf of the resident,” says Christa. “There are always family meetings, and we encourage all parties to be at least part of the conversation.” “There are times when a child is not in favour of the move or is not sure about our home. We invite them to come have a tour and ask all the questions they may have to be more confident in making the right decision or to be on board with the rest of the family.” Berwick on the Lake takes a similar approach. “We do see families from time to time that do not always agree on what is best for mom or dad,” says Wayne. “When this occurs, I usually describe myself as ‘Switzer-

land.’ We talk to different family members and offer an avenue that removes the emotional component, or historical rifts that may hinder families as they navigate through the process.” One area that has definitely changed in choosing a residence is the advances made in social media and modern technology. Not only do the residences have websites, often with virtual tours, but family members of potential residents are turning to smart phones, laptop computers, tablets, Skype and other methods to stay in touch, help siblings who live farther away and even make life better for their parent in the care home. Wayne says his wife calls him a computer nerd with social skills. “We had a family member approach us this week to set up a video link so a 97-year-old resident could virtually attend a memorial service for a beloved cousin in Ontario. We are constantly updating our website and I would suggest, in the not too distant future, we will have virtual tours available.” But despite advances in technology, nothing replaces the human touch. “We have a website with pictures and information provided,” says Loraine. “Many families have accessed this site prior to contacting the facility. One thing I always stress is to trust their own instincts. For instance, do you feel welcomed? Does the facility smell? Does it look clean? How do the residents look… are they appropriately dressed, engaged in activities? Does the staff smile, say hello? These observations are very valuable and of considerable assistance in making a decision as SL to choosing a facility for care.”

ogs have a reputation as man’s best friend. Owning a dog has many benefits: they provide a reason to go out for a walk; a chance to experience their excitement about life as they chase a well-thrown ball or stick; and, of course, unconditional love. Organizations, from health care facilities to schools and day care centres, recognize the positive impact of a well-trained dog. Many of these allow pet visits and dog therapy under the auspices of Pacific Animal Therapy Society (PATS), Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS), Animal Assisted Therapy (ATT) or other approved dog therapy societies. PATS is an animal therapy program operating primarily on Vancouver Island. Sadey Guy founded the organization in 1988 after retiring from nursing. Twenty-five years later, PATS has grown to 300-plus volunteers who visit 90 facilities. “I was inspired to start the program when I saw the difference my own dogs made when they visited folks in facilities

who were not returning to their own homes,” says Sadey. At the Vancouver Island Health Authority, PATS volunteers take their own pets to visit retirement facilities, assisted living residences, group homes and other facilities. These pets must first pass a behaviour test (administered by a veterinarian), ensure that all their vaccinations are up to date and go through an orientation with their handler. PATS volunteers have many stories to tell about the impact their pet visits have on residents. Wearing blue PATS kerchiefs around their necks, these dogs bring love and laughter into the lives of many. In addition to visiting residential care facilities, there are animal therapy programs. These programs support approved therapy dogs visiting patients in acute-care facilities like Victoria General Hospital. Dogs enrolled in this program must not only pass the PATS guidelines, they must also follow strict Infection Prevention and Control guidelines around

cleanliness, grooming, hospital and patient access. Dog therapy is a welcome addition to the therapies used at Victoria General Hospital’s Neurological Rehabilitation floor. Patients there have had a brain injury or stroke and are learning how to navigate day-to-day life again. A therapy dog is assigned to an approved patient and visits the ward for 20minutes, as arranged. Patients are generally on this ward for six to eight weeks. “This can be a difficult time for many patients as they adjust to their disability,” says social worker Heidi Meseyton. “I find that an animal therapy dog can be beneficial, especially for patients who are vulnerable to isolation or who are having difficulty coping emotionally.”

Rico is a two-year-old Bernese mountain dog who spends time specifically on this Neurological Rehab ward with his owner, Magrit Whittome, a volunteer of nine years. Rico is the third generation of Magrit’s Bernese dogs that has performed therapy duties. His predecessors, Queno and Bianca, visited VGH for seven years and the stories of their relationships with patients are legendary. Magrit’s dogs have brought comfort to a dying child; encouraged a non-communicative patient to speak; and helped families cope with sadness. “Magrit’s therapy dogs have had such an impact and are fondly remembered to this day by staff, volunteers, returning patients and visitors,” says Petra Slaughter, coordinator of volunteer resources. “I can’t thank Magrit and her fourlegged angels enough for all the joy, peace and hope they bring to the hospital.” Up until recently, Rico was spending time with a patient who had difficulty communicating and was isolated and with-

drawn, as it was very frustrating for him to try to speak. He lit up when Rico came to visit — the interactions appeared to lift his spirits and give him some much-needed affection. This patient has now returned home. Therapy dogs also work with patients on “functional enhancement.” This therapy is for patients who are returning home and need to build their strength, flexibility and mobility. Rachel Oates, a physiotherapist working with patients at Aberdeen Hospital, has used therapy dogs to help patients improve physical function. “Patients can build their range of motion by grooming a dog who stands at the patient’s shoulder height so they must lift their arms up,” says Rachel. “Patients also improve their standing balance by throwing a ball for a dog and waiting for them to return it — they enjoy watching the dog so much, they tend to stand longer, building their ability.” Rachel says the therapy dogs bring a sense of fun and positive energy, so patients stay with their exercises longer when working with the animals, and remembering commands helps build cognitive function. MAKING THE MOST OF THE DIRECTORY O

ur goal in designing this guide is to develop an easy-to-read resource that helps those seeking housing and care solutions (for themselves, a friend or family member), to establish a solid starting point for understanding the seniors housing market. The directory is arranged into regions, with residences listed alphabetically within each region. We use three housing categories to define the residences – Independent/Supportive, Assisted Living and Licensed Care.

Independent/Supportive Living

 (I)

Independent/Supportive Living includes a combination of housing and hospitality services for retired adults who are capable of directing their own care. Housing units typically provide a private living space with a lockable door, monitoring and emergency support, optional meal services, housekeeping, laundry, social and recreational opportunities. Housing units may be rented, owned or life-leased, depending on the structure of the residence. The Independent/Supportive Living category includes privately owned, non-profit and subsidized housing.

Assisted Living  (A) By law, all Assisted Living residences must be registered with the Assisted Living Registrar of BC. Assisted Living residences offer housing, hospitality services and personal assistance to adults who can live independently but require regular help with daily activities. Accommodation can range from private rooms with lockable doors in a home, to an apartment-style building with private self-contained suites, usually their own bathrooms and cooking facilities. The residence provides a place where people can eat together and socialize. Assisted Living operators provide five hospitality services: meals, housekeeping, laundry, social and recreational opportunities and a 24-hour emergency response system. Residents also receive personal assistance with activities of daily living, such as eating, dressing, bathing, grooming, mobility and reminders or assistance with medications. Assisted Living is intended for people who are able to choose and direct their own care. Assisted Living services are delivered in both publicly funded residences (subsidized by VIHA and BC Housing) and in non-publicly funded (private pay) residences, in which residents are responsible for all costs. Some residences have both publicly funded and non-publicly funded units.

Licensed Care  (C) Licensed Care units provide accommodation, care and supervision for retired adults who are no longer capable of directing their own day-to-day activities. Licensed Care settings typically provide a combination of housing and hospitality services, as well as extensive support services. These settings include intermediate care facilities, multilevel care facilities, extended care hospitals and private hospitals. Services may be delivered by private or non-profit organizations. Some units offer government subsidized care options. Care levels are determined by the health care requirements of the individual and could include: Complex Care; Intermediate Care Levels I, II, III; Multi-level Care; Extended Care; Special Care; Palliative Care or Respite Care. Great effort is made to be as accurate as possible, however, mistakes can occur and we apologize for any errors or oversights. This information should be used as a guide and reference only. We have provided contact names and phone numbers so you can verify that the information is correct and current. A COMMUNITY OF COMPANIONS BY JOHN THOMSON

SENIOR LIVING

“W

ill I like these new people? Will I fit in?” These are big questions for seniors facing the big move – transitioning from a house or apartment into a retirement residence. Fortunately, BC’s retirement facilities have programs in place to ease their anxiety. Whether it’s called the Friendship Ambassador Program or the Welcome Team, all of them use their existing residents to make the new folks feel at home, a buddy system if you will. “It was hard to get used to at first but I soon fell into it,” says Helen, a four year resident at the Mulberry Retirement Residence in Burnaby. Like many seniors she was initially apprehensive about the move but her fears disappeared the minute she met Barbara, one of five veteran residents who make up Mulberry’s in-house welcoming committee “We tell them how long we’ve been here and tell them about the building and what it’s like and introduce them to everything,” says Barbara. We take them all through the building and outside too. They introduce themselves to us and tell us what they like and we tell them what’s here and the different programs you can get into.” Barbara’s no slouch. She’s brimming with energy. She sets the tone by example. “I’m not one to sit and watch television. I want to do things. I’m in every activity. I’m in the gardening club. I’m in arts and crafts, the knitting club. I’m so busy in here doing things.” All day activities are a staple at BC’s retirement residences. Arts and crafts, card games and crosswords stimulate the brain. Low-impact exercises get the blood moving. Day trips are popular. Some facilities bring in speakers to talk about current affairs, art history and scams that prey on the elderly. The name of the game is to bring people together in a common interest. “If you get people who are similar you can get them to do things,” says Dr. Andrew Wister, chair of Gerontology at Simon Fraser University. “Sometimes it’s not a lot. It’s a nudge and then when you get people saying ‘this isn’t bad, it’s fun’ you get a critical mass.” That’s what happened at Berwick-on-the-Lake, a mixed-use facility in Nanaimo. Back in 2012, management floated the idea of a singing venue. One resident joined and then another and today the 12-member acapella Berwick Chorus meets every two weeks to sing its heart out. “We sing songs from many different genres including folk, jazz, campfire songs...but no Justin Bieber,” laughs choir leader Sylvia Wende. When asked what people get out of it Wende is quick to point out singing improves articulation, strengthens brain and language development and, above all, brings people together in a shared activity.

“Simply put, they get to spend an hour together with others doing something they enjoy, sharing their love of song and experiencing a return to memories, times, places and loved ones associated with the music.” Oftentimes the facility’s physical layout helps. At the All-Care Residence in Sidney there are 88 apartments on four floors with approximately 20 people on each floor. Each floor has its own dining room and the intimate space, smaller than most communal dining rooms, promotes a sense of inclusion. Remember college days? Kitty corner to a nature trail, The Alexander Mackie Retirement Community in Langford has instigated an activity called Walkie Talkie whereby residents are encouraged to pair up and take advantage of the natural surroundings. “They make lifelong friends here,” says Executive Director Lawrence Saracuse. “When you see Virginia you see Mary.” But what if Virginia is shy and Mary values her alone time? Staff are quick to respond and will ask them what are they

interested in. The intention is to customize a program to their liking but it doesn’t always work. BC’s retirement facilities may offer lots of activities but participation isn’t mandatory. No one is forced to attend. “When they’re ready to come they’ll come,” says Barbara. Keeping connected with old friends, especially at the move-in stage, is important too. “We’re very open to having people coming in and out,” says Alexander Mackie’s Lawrence Saracuse. He points to the common areas – the horseshoe pit, gazebo and greenhouse – where residents can meet their friends. Over at the Legion Manor Victoria, Executive Director Greg Askham says he’ll go the distance to accommodate outside friends. “If a lady wants to have her bridge club come in she’s more than welcome to do it,” says Askham. “Have your bridge up in your suite and we’ll bring coffee and snacks.” But having friends visit the facility can be challenging. Transportation is a major impediment. A lot of seniors don’t drive anymore and that makes them dependent on busses, taxis or hitching a ride with family. As a result many residents like Barbara meet their friends in a location that’s mutually accessible. “Sometimes we meet at different places, “says Barbara. “ I usually go up to Metrotown,” she says, referring to a nearby mall. Their main contact with the outside world is through their families. Barbara’s son calls her from Edmonton every morning. Helen’s son takes her on weekend outings. Both ladies use the Internet to keep in touch. “I enjoy it here but you have to have an outside interest too,” says Helen. Vicki Salter, Marketing and Communications Consultant at Terraces on 7th, a Vancouver retirement residence, says management has to make it a welcoming environment if they want visitors to come by. Greg Askham Executive Director of Legion Manor Victoria agrees. “Are the staff friendly? Are they outgoing? Are they laughing? That’s what makes a building” says Askham. “The ambience is not only created by the appearance of the building but by its staff,” and that he says, makes it easier to SL meet people and make new friends.

Beauful surroundings inspire. We love working here. We think you’ll love living here.

Welcome to the family. Welcome home. Our residents move into bright, quiet, one or two bedroom suites. Incredible meals cooked from scratch, not only a delight to the palate, but a reminder of the fresh local ingredients used in days gone by. Meandering paths through wooded meadows and gardens bring peace and pleasure. Housekeeping, laundry services and recreation let them know we're here to spoil them. The laughter of children in the distance brings smiles all around.

uthor of Bog Tender, Coming Home to Nature and Memory George Szanto, whose parents escaped Hitler’s Vienna before he was born, decided – after a lifetime of working and travelling in the US and Europe – to retire on a bog on Gabriola Island. Rather than filling in the wetland that cuts his property in two, George embraced the bog as a site of his inspiration for writing. Born in Derry, North Ireland, George grew up in Ireland, England and, later, the US. “My growing up was not my issue,” says George. “I only began life when I met Kit, a couple of weeks after I graduated, on a passenger boat on the St. Lawrence River that was to take me to Europe for a year.” An American citizen, George never considered living and working in Canada until he met the Canadian woman with whom he’d want to spend the rest of his life. Of the people George met on the boat, he “has memories only of one woman – a beautiful blue-eyed blonde from Vancouver.” En route, George and Kit became bridge partners and friends. While George was on his way to Germany, Kit planned to live and work in Europe for a year, specifically in London and Paris. Each went their separate ways when they reached Europe, but the pair met up again in Paris, and continued a relationship while George attended university in Germany. The romance resulted in a marriage at the town hall, the Mairie in the sixteenth arrondissement in Paris. “We had no bog in mind, no southern Gulf island off the coast of Vancouver Island,” says George. “We had nothing but the packs on our backs and enough money plus tickets to get us back to Canada and the United States.” George’s first interest in literature was sparked when he learned to read as a child: “Books gave me many new worlds to explore.” At the age of 12, George began to write. His first short piece was a detective story. He showed the story to his Grade 6 teacher, who had him read it to the class. “It was a bit of a sensation,” says George. “None of her students had ever written a story before. It may have been the adulation I received then that prodded me to keep going with this story-writing business. I could invent all kinds of people and places, and incidents, create them right out of my head.” Later, George attended colleges in Dartmouth, Geothe

University in Frankfurt/Main, Université d’Aix-en-Provence, France and, finally, received a doctorate from Harvard in 1967, where he also began his teaching career. His next job was with the University of California and, finally, McGill University in Montreal for 26 years, where he retired as Professor Emeritus. A national magazine award recipient

and winner of the Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction, George is the author of seven novels, two collections of short stories and several academic books, essays and plays. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, he co-authored three books on the Island Investigational Mystery series with Sandy Frances Duncan: Never Sleep with a Suspect on Gabriola Island, Always Kiss the Corps on Whidbey Island and Never Hug a Mugger on Quadra Island. The next novel in the series, Always Love a Villain on San Juan Island, will be published in the fall of 2013. “And the series will go on,” says George. In the meantime, he continues to work on two more novels, sub-genres George says he has never tried before. One is “a big fat old-fashioned novel involving three families covering a period of 44 years,” and the other “a caper story set in the 1970s.” In Bog Tender Coming Home to Nature and Memory, George relates to the flora and fauna on Gabriola. Dividing his book into 12 months of the year, like French author, Marcel Proust whose memories were awakened when he tasted his aunt’s madeleine cake, George’s activities and interaction with life near the bog restore memories of his earlier life. Each month, the Island’s environment triggers vignettes from George’s past – family, people, personalities, travels and work experiences. From a symbiotic relationship between nature and writing by the wetlands, George unearths a lifetime of personal stories. Finishing his Mexico trilogy and having two chapters of Stones particularly honoured are, for the writer, among the most noteworthy achievements in his career. Another highlight: “My publisher for Bog Tender informed me a couple of weeks ago that the book was No. 1 on two of Amazon’s bestseller lists.” When he’s not writing, George likes to fish, something he learned from his father. “I’m primarily a freshwater fisher because I love the mysteries that still and flowing waters hold,” he says. “Fishing has often been part of the subject matter of my fiction, but not till Bog Tender did I make water part of the fabric of what I wrote.” Writing gives George a sense of empowerment over one small section of the universe – his story. “There’s something almost God-like in writing. You start out with nothing and when you’re finished, you’ve created a new part of the cosmos, something that was simply never there before.” “Without stories, we are nothing,” says George “not a community, not a people with history, not a civilization. There have, therefore, always been stories, oral or written, as long as people have gathered together, from what’s told around a campfire to what’s produced by a printing press. And that’s how people have survived.” With Kit never far away, George Szanto continues to chronicle his community and civilization, creating stories and preserving SL contemporary history on his bog on Gabriola Island. AN INCURABLE PASSION BY PENE BEAVAN HORTON

“M

y grandfather was a great gardener,” says Helen Lang, Sidney’s 91year-old columnist of “Over the Garden Fence” in BC’s Peninsula News Review newspaper. “When I was three years old, I raked and dug and planted seeds with my grandfather, and he planted the love of gardening in me,” she says. “Then, during the Great Depression, I used to help my mother garden. She had a huge vegetable garden that fed us. I loved it because I was doing it with her.” Helen has been gardening ever since. “It’s an incurable disease,” she says. “You never get over it …thank goodness!” Having the opportunity to write about gardening is an added joy.

“I’ve been writing the column for about 31 years,” she says. “I remember the day the editor of the Peninsula News Review came to see me in my little garden shop outside Sidney Super Foods, now Fairway Market. He asked if I’d like to write a garden column. I jumped at the chance. Then I went home and told my husband Jim.” “‘How much is he paying you?’ ‘Paying me? I didn’t think about being paid.’ ‘He has to give you at least ten dollars a column,’” Jim said firmly. “So I went back to the editor and said, ‘My husband says I have to ask for at least ten dollars a column.’ ‘I only pay five dollars for a syndicated column.’

‘That’s okay,’ I said hurriedly. ‘I’ll do it for nothing.’ ‘No you won’t,’ the editor told me. ‘You’ll do it for ten dollars.’” Money is not, and never has been, Helen’s No. 1 concern. She was thrilled with her garden shop, the interaction with her customers, writing the column and the interaction with her readers. Jim figured in her columns as “Himself.” A second marriage for both, lasting 40 happy years. She had children, and so did Jim. When they married, the children became “theirs.” The family moved to Sidney from Prince George, and lived on Melissa Street. Jim interested himself in municipal affairs, and Helen gardened. When Himself answered their phone

in Helen’s absence, he always gave the distraught caller one of two bits of gardening advice: “You’re using too much water,” or “You’re not using enough.” And it worked! “At least no one appeared at the door threatening to shoot him,” Helen says with a smile. When Himself died in 2005, Helen was desolate. After losing Jim, Helen bought a condo in Sidney, and she now gardens on her balcony – potatoes, carrots and peas, some lilies and clematis. She keeps her readers abreast of what’s happening to her beloved plants, and answers their gardening questions. “The column is the focus of a great deal of my life,” she says. “If I go for a walk, that’s what I’m thinking about. I certainly feel that my readers are friends of mine. I get feedback from our writers’ group, who read my column, and they tell me their friends are reading it too. It has made me so many connections.”

She recalls telephoning an avid bird-watcher friend and telling him that there were a bunch of pelicans on Sidney Wharf. “Bye, I’m off to see them!” he shouted. Helen immediately called him back: “April Fools …” His reply was unpublishable. Fiercely independent, even at 91, Helen is more likely to smack a hand that offers help than take it. “Thank you, I can do this myself,” she says. Her philosophy? The more you accept help, the more you’ll need it. Her life hasn’t always been easy, but she says, “I’m a tough old bird! A survivor, with an incurable disease – gardening.” SL Readers with a passion for everything garden are welcome to call Helen at 250-656-5918.

SENIOR LIVING

The World’s Worst Hotel

I

’ve stayed in some pretty horrible hotels in my day, including a few that should have been condemned by God as well as the local health authority. On a package deal to the Dominican Republic, I was assigned an unpainted cinder-block cell with a bare light bulb hanging from the ceiling and a curtain for a door. Across the road was a bar furnished with car seats where the hookers hung out. In Chalk Farm, a suburb of London, England, I stayed in a Bed & Breakfast that had neither a bed or breakfast but a pullout couch in a closet with a laundry tree outside the door used to hang your clothes. Near Djamma El Fna Square in Marrakesh, Morocco, I stayed in what amounted to a boarding house with bales of hay for beds and a washroom that was down the hall, out the door and in the building next door. I once stayed in a shabby motel that formed a semi-circle in front of the screen of a drive-in theatre. It was late and the electricity was off when I checked in. I woke up looking at 20 TVs all piled against one wall where they’d been stored for safekeeping over the winter. The tap dripped all night and the toilet overflowed in the morning. Yes, I’ve slept in fields along the Mediterranean coast of Spain that were more attractive than a lot of hotels I’ve checked into. WWW.SENIORLIVINGMAG.COM

In Amsterdam, I stayed in a hippie hotel in the ’70s – all wood, narrow staircase, and the fire escape was a thick rope tied to the roof and running past my window to the street below. And everybody smoked dope in their rooms all night. But this may as well have been The Fairmont Empress compared to that other hotel in Amsterdam, the worst hotel in the world. “Welcome! This hotel has been proudly disappointing travellers for 40 years. Boasting levels of comfort comparable to a minimum-security prison, it also offers some plumbing and an intermittently open canteen serving a wide range of dishes based on runny eggs.” And that’s not a client complaint, that’s a rousing endorsement from the hotel itself. This hotel is not just horrible; it’s popular, famous and frequently filled to capacity with backpackers. Why? Because of a checklist of amenities, few other hotels have: • A basement bar with limited light and no fresh air. • A concrete courtyard with high buildings on either side. • An elevator that hardly ever breaks down between floors. • A bar serving slightly watereddown beer. • Amusing witticisms about guests’ sexual preferences scrawled on most surfaces.

• A Luxury Ambassadorial Suite featuring the one and only bathtub. • Doors that lock. Room service is described as a bag of chips left behind by yesterday’s guests. The window curtains are designated “eco-towels.” The bridal suite is a room with two separate bare bunks and there’s a “Dust Hall Of Fame” in the lobby. “Stairs not lifts,” the management assures guests, “open windows not air conditioners, and no clean towels.” Hotel motto: “Similar to hell but without the proper heating.” Seriously, how did this dungeon become an icon of Amsterdam tourism and the subject of a bestselling book The Worst Hotel In The World? Honesty in advertising. I know that sounds like an oxymoron in today’s world – people trying to sell you something by telling you the truth – but it worked 15 years ago when an ad firm took over the hotel’s ad account.

Realizing the company was not going to renovate or enhance the clean and cheap hotel they were quite proud of, the ad firm went crazy with the world’s rarest commodity – “honesty.” Ridiculing fancy boutique hotels, this presented its own objects d’art display with a fork with a missing prong, a three-legged chair and a mug with the handle chipped off. Shoving it into the face of five-star hostelries, it boasted: “Spas, room service, luxury products, an award-winning restaurant and fitness center – all things we must avoid in order to save the planet.” The ad campaign started slow. “Now A Door In Every Room.” And later “Now A Bed In Every Room.” Then it ramped up a bit with “Now Even Less Service” and then ‘Now Even More Noise.” Then it got ridiculous, “Now 5 Watts Extra In Every Light Bulb.”

Then it went off the rails: “Now Even More Dog Poop Near Our Main Entrance.” As a result of the ad campaign, bookings at the hotel doubled, the ad exec became an industry celebrity and every backpacker headed for Holland wants to stay at the World’s Worst Hotel, if only for the bragging rights. Never having given a thought to telephones in the room, mini-bars, satellite TVs or fridges, the hotel now considers itself the most accidental, eco-friendly hotel on the planet. “Leave your dirty towels on the rack, we won’t wash them. Throw them on the floor, we still won’t wash them.” And this hotel is hardly resting on its laurels or standing pat with the good hand it’s been dealt. New motto and solemn promise to its customers in the future: “We can’t get any worse, SL but we will do our best.”

Pandora Box contest, and in 2006, The Tickled by Thunder contest. Always creative, Ruth is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, and has been writing poetry for over 30 years. “I have drawers full of my poetry,” she says. But Ruth often felt she had the potential to write longer pieces than poems. Seven years ago, she took some writing courses, setting her on a path filled with stories. Her tutor, Joelene Heathcote, encouraged the writing of her first novel, Wait Until Morning. “She told me I was a good writer.” The physical challenges of writing do not deter Ruth from fulfilling her passion. Her arthritic hands still enable her to grasp a pen, so she writes her ideas in longhand. She then records the story into a tape recorder and pays to have the text transcribed. Laboriously correcting the transcript manually, she has the corrections added to her digital manuscript. Finally, she gives the digital file to her editor. After the editor’s work, she reviews the proposed edits and, after discussion, accepts – and sometimes rejects – the edits. Once the manuscript is complete, Ruth works with her publisher to approve the layout and cover design, before the work

The trials Ruth has overcome in her life ultimately shaped her first novel. ome people cannot remember. Some people do not want to remember. Sometimes it is better not to remember.” With these opening lines from Wait Until Morning, Ruth Adkins weaves a tale roughly based on her own experiences of despair – and the power of bewildering societal forces that she could not oppose. Those experiences eventually led to her blossom as an expressive writer. Ruth is a determined and accomplished octogenarian widow living in View Royal. So beset with the difficulty of rheumatoid arthritis in her hands and fingers, she can no longer type. Nevertheless, Ruth has won awards for her poetry and stories, from Beginnings Magazine (New York), to winning the 2006

and the class structure of the time. Her romantic and independent spirit put her into desperate conflicts with her mother, her filial duty to a doting father and her love for a flamboyant husband. Ruth ultimately suffered a nervous breakdown and a personality collapse, and meandered into the depths of mental disorder. Her psychiatrist knew she had a gift for writing and encouraged her to write as part of her healing. “He knew it would be therapeutic,” she says. These days, the writing process is too daunting for her to waste time and energy on competitions for short stories and poems. Although she knows readers may benefit from her experiences, she writes because she must: “I am obsessive about my writing. I have to do it.” Ruth’s second book Beyond the Cornfield, to be published in the fall of 2013, continues to explore the themes of despair SL and survival.

Travel & Adventure

Biting the Big Apple BY RICK AND CHRIS MILLIKAN

D

octors recommend moderate physical activity and mental stimulation for good health. Our recent New York City experiences toned up our bodies… and wondrously expanded our minds! Of countless art museums, we visit the big three: Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), Metropolitan and the iconic Guggenheim. Headsets guide us through their renowned collections. The Impressionists prove especially interesting. Like intrepid scientists, these 19th century artists investigated the properties of light seeking to capture fleeting impressions of early morning meadows, snowy valleys, rain-soaked fields, sunbaked mountainsides and smoke-filled train stations. At MOMA, we study Cezanne and Pissarro’s pastel landscapes of French countrysides, Monet’s swirling wallsized depictions of his own garden’s water lilies and Van Gogh’s shimmering renditions of evocative scenes such as Starry Night. Inside the Met, impressionist masterpieces document their fascinating era: Renoir’s reflections on social life; Degas’ intricate world of ballet and horseracing; Manet’s vivid portrayals of Spanish culture. From over 80 shows playing on and off Broadway, we pick two awardwinning musicals. In the first, aspiring DJ Huey Calhoun and friends passionately integrate 1950s rock and roll on Memphis radio. Next, Billy Elliot tap dances his way out of a struggling coal town with a tour-de-force London performance. Dazzling choreography, catchy musical scores and those uplifting plotlines of Memphis and Billy Elliot trigger standing ovations… and inspire optimism. 50 48

The authors stroll through Washington Square.

Central Park inspires miles and miles of rousing exercise. From our perfectly located park west hotel, we explore this vast green gem afoot… and during a bike tour. The tour begins inside the park as guide Richard recounts park history: “These old photos show the huge fanfare when Central WWW.SENIORLIVINGMAG.COM

Park opened in 1857. Olmstead and Vaux designed this stylish 843-acre park to compete with those in Europe. It’s been popular ever since!” Spinning along shady East Drive, we pass a 3,500-year-old obelisk rising among a grove of huge elms; just yesterday we’d discovered an elaborate

bronze sculpture portraying Alice in Wonderland’s quirky characters just below. Further on, Richard leads us onto a pathway toward idyllic serenity under a stone bridge. “Few know about this wilderness haven! You’re standing under some of the park’s 24,000 trees – and beside schist boulders first excavated to create early subways.” Our single file procession exits the park into Harlem’s light Sunday traffic. Cars are double-parked along this borough’s wide streets due to attendance in its 350 churches. Seated inside a small neighbourhood church, rousing gospel music and a passionate sermon stirs our congregation. Distinctive brownstone homes line these streets, occasional gaps providing space for community gardens. Street names eulogize distinguished citizens. Statues memorialize abolitionist Frederick Douglass, jazz great Duke Ellington and civil rights advocate Adam Clayton Powel Junior. Over 80 shows play on and off Broadway. Theatre-goers gather to see Billy Elliot.

“Another great trip yesterday. I loved the entire day.”

We pass legendary Apollo Theater, where stars like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughan and Michael Jackson launched careers. Posters still list top acts and Tuesdays’ amateur nights. Just beyond Bill Clinton’s glassy offices, New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research boasts collections reflecting the richness of black culture. A soul food restaurant’s smorgasbord provides salad fixings, collard greens, cornbread, candied yams, fried chicken and more. Plates loaded, a Dutch couple compares travel in the Netherlands and Manhattan with us. We all agree NYC motorists consider pedestrians and cyclists courteously. On our return, Richard leads us to the lush Great Lawn, venue for countless famous performers. Our ride continues to the park’s western edge to see The Dakota, turn-of-the-century apartment block where John Lennon lived – and died.

This financial district’s sleek skyscrapers overshadow gothic Trinity Church. Clearly etched headstones, from the 1600-1800s, dot its restful burial ground, including those of Alexander Hamilton and Robert Fulton. Our nautical guide notes, “The Colossus of Rhodes inspired Bartholdi to conceive this similar gigantic statue. He created Libertas to greet world travellers at the entrance of New York harbour.” We learn the unveiling ceremonies excluded most women, outraging the suffragettes. Also shocking, when completely revealed in her flowing gown and cloak, Liberty was wearing slave sandals! On up the East River, we pass under the Brooklyn suspension Bridge, an 1883 marvel and first of Manhattan’s 16 bridges. When the United Nations Building appears, we reflect more on NYC’s international perspective. Fit for the Adventure Tips on Buying Exercise Machines

H

ome exercise equipment offers a convenient, effective workout with the added bonus of comfort and privacy. But before you buy, consider the following: Treadmills are popular machines because walking and running are familiar, natural movements anyone can do. With their greater shock absorbency, treadmills are easier on joints than asphalt and concrete. Look for more than a 1.5-horsepower motor (especially if you’re over 185 lbs.), a deck that’s 20” wide for comfort and safety, and about 60” long to fit the stride length of most runners and walkers. Treadmills can require up to 30 square feet of space. Plan to spend more than $800. Cheaper treadmills are jerky, noisy, break down too often, lack adequate shock absorption and may not last for joggers or heavy people. Elliptical trainers offer no impact to the body, so they’re easier on joints. Less

impact also means less wear and tear on the machine, and that translates to low maintenance costs. The dual action of arms and legs increases energy expenditure, providing a more efficient calorieburning workout: You require less time to achieve more results. Low electrical usage makes an elliptical trainer cheap to operate. And if your home is small, it won’t take up valuable floor space. Expect to spend $1,000 or more. Stationary bicycles (upright and recumbent models). Recumbent cycling (in a semi-reclining position) uses more of the glutes and hamstrings than upright cycling. Instead of a bike seat, the recumbent cycle’s wide chair is much more comfortable and allows you to work out longer. Upright bikes need very little space, usually not more than 10 square feet. For good quality, expect to pay $300, minimum. Recumbent cycles take up twice as much room as upright models and may be pricier. For a smoother, quieter

ride, resistance on either bike should be provided by a belt circling the flywheel. The brake-pad type of resistance won’t survive heavy use. Stair climbing machines – Look for a stable frame and smooth stepping action. Your workout will be less jerky if there is independent step action (pushing one step down doesn’t automatically force the other step up). Some have arm involvement to work upper body muscles, offering a greater challenge. These machines can be pricey: Spending less than $2,000 may not guarantee good quality. And space may be a problem. Some machines need up to 20 square feet. Poor exercise technique can aggravate or cause problems in the knees and low back. Stair climbing also creates a rapid rise in heart rate. The very unfit or those with heart problems should be careful. Try to buy locally and support your community’s merchants. Stores specializing in fitness equipment are the best source for quality merchandise. Only topof-the-line products are stocked because they don’t want the hassles of returns and repairs. In-store purchasing also allows you to try the equipment – impossible through a website or television ad. Buying locally also means faster service and maintenance, and easier access to parts. SL

COMMUNITY LIVING

Photo: Frances Litman

COURAGEOUS and OUTRAGEOUS

“Community is when human beings come together in the shelter of each other.” –Ram Dass

A

re you still living at home alone, and wondering why the days seem long and the nights longer? Does it feel like it takes too much energy to get out and visit that friend you haven’t seen in a while? Have you thought of living in a community? I have lived in my house for 34 years, and I can’t believe the amount of detritus that has accumulated here. Luckily, I don’t have a basement to fill! The idea of moving into a senior’s residence offers an opportunity to recycle “stuff” that has been amassed for years. Recently, I found out my kids don’t want “the good china” – a family heirloom that was very important to my generation when I was their age. Auction houses don’t want it because there are lots of families like yours and mine. If you have things you haven’t used for two years, you don’t need them. Maybe someone else will find your “trash” a treasure. If the thought of moving into a residence and recycling your stuff doesn’t get you excited, how about the thought of having a housekeeper, a cook, and lots of new friends? It’s time to invest in your future. What you do today determines who and where you will be two, five, 10, 20 years from

now. People who have a larger network of friends and acquaintances live longer, live happier and have less chance of contracting major illness. Make your life the centre of an ever-widening circle, rather than the typical shrinkage common as we age. When I spoke with several seniors at a local residence for active people 55+. I asked two questions: “Why did you come here?” And “Why do you stay?” The answers were similar: “I came because I realized I could no longer do things safely on my own.” And “I stay because of the people. When I want to talk, there is always someone around.” We are not meant to live alone. Living in community simply means we are constantly making new contacts, learning new things, acquiring new skills. This issue of Senior Living is packed with resources about community living – take adSL vantage of it!

Reflections THEN & NOW

W

hen I was a teenager, I never thought I would grow old. Only old people did that! At the time, I considered 40 old, and 50 really old. I was convinced I would never live long enough to reach such ancient heights. I travelled with a pretty fast crowd in those my younger years, and none of us ever thought of living much past 30. So, we tried to cram what we considered living into those years between 20 and 30, figuring that was our limit. There was an old saying bouncing around – even over-used – then: “Live fast, die young, and have a good looking corpse.” If you said it right to bright-eyed trusting young girls, it sounded very dramatic. Kind of “James Dean-ish” as we sighed and stared off into the distance. The Brylcreem added a shiny touch and the cigarette dangling from the lips gave the whole scenario an “Amboy Dukes” flavour. We thought we were pretty good actors and, sometimes, the girls would almost swoon. We considered ourselves too tough to ever grow old. “Then” would always be “then” and tomorrow was never much thought about. That was about 60 years ago… and now I think I am far too young to die. It seems the more we get, the more we think we deserve. They tell me the older you get, the more you deserve to change your mind. So now, I am having second thoughts. I wasn’t such a hot looking guy when I was young, so I don’t think dying young would have made a great deal of difference. At least now there is more of me than there was then. I no longer use Brylcreem, so I couldn’t slip or slide out as easily as I may have done then. I’m afraid now if I stared into any ladies’ 58 56

eyes and said something deep and dramatic, they would call the police. I’ve lived three quarters of a BY century and I am still a young man, although no one believes me. My wife just asked me if I have taken my meds (talk about something fracturing the moment!). When I was a teenager, like most, I thought the world was my oyster. I thought nothing would ever change… that things would always remain exactly as they were and, as mentioned, never dreaming I could or would grow old. I was determined! So maybe sometimes I use a scooter or wheelchair and, when I do walk, I need to do so with a cane. So what? I’m just saving the best for last! And maybe my eyesight is not as good now as it was then, but I can still see. Just because I don’t wear leather or cowboy boots anymore, and just because I no longer smoke doesn’t take away from my vigour and vim. I think collected years have nerve – openly flaunting themselves in front of we who refuse to grow old. “Down with years” I say. On second thought, looking back is far more fun than looking ahead. So, I guess I shouldn’t be so derogatory about years. Nevertheless, when they become a gang, it’s very disconcerting. I’ve had many second thoughts over the past three quarters of a century. Many of them have kept me out of jail, and out of the army, and out of all kinds of other things. A few occasions of second thoughts have even saved my life… even though I once thought dying young was very adventuresome and romantic. Many say we have guardian angels to waylay certain dangerous and often unrealized instances in the devil-may-care lives some of us insisted on embracing. WWW.SENIORLIVINGMAG.COM

ON SECOND THOUGHT

Well! By my count, I have 75 of them who are now breaking in No. 76. One for each year of life because each year had its moments – including the day of my birth. I recruited guardian angels early. In the distant past, I used to hang out in certain restaurants and pool rooms and street corners. I now hang out in my recliner, at the refrigerator or near the bathroom door. Not quite as romantic. As a svelte 165 pounds with slicked down hair, cigarette dangling from a sneering lip, slouched against a wall on a neon shrouded street, I was daring life to even think of allowing me to grow old. Now, being svelte-less, smokeless, overweight and Brylcreem-less… and certainly older… I sheepishly pretend that the “greaser” of old was not really me. He was an imposter without any true credential other than a silly cliché and a hidden fear of tomorrow. So, I’ve been sitting here having second thoughts… if not third or fourth or fifth thoughts about yesterday, today and tomorrow. And I come to the same conclusion of a very wise man who lived many years ago. His name was Solomon and he said: “Behold, all is vanity and grasping for the wind” (I think that’s how it goes!). In looking back, I think Solomon was havSL ing second thoughts too. Sadly, Gipp passed away on April 15, 2013. He left us with some unpublished writings, so we are honouring his love of Senior Living and its readers by continuing to publish his work for as long as we can.
