Back a few years ago, when I was still in elementary school, every school classroom had a globe in it. Every chance we would get, we would give that thing a good spin—sometimes slapping it several times to really get it going.

And then we would use our finger to try to stop it at the exact place we were located.

Of course that was basically impossible. Even if you did get it stopped on the right continent, the possibility that your finger was in the right part of that continent was basically slim to none. /// SEE PAGE 3

Haskins graduates challenged to serve with empathy, humility

DEL CITY—Fourteen people graduated from the Haskins School of Christian Ministry, Aug. 14, in a ceremony at Del City, Sunnylane Southern Baptist. Graduates received diplomas and certificates from the online school in pastoral and church ministry.

Students were challenged in a message by Todd Fisher, pastor of Shawnee, Immanuel and current president of Oklahoma Baptists. Fisher preached from the Apostle Paul’s farewell address to the Ephesians (Acts 20:17-38)

Dear Oklahoma Baptist family, My name is Michael Staton and I have the pleasure of leading the Executive Director Search Committee. I would like to provide you with a brief update on where we are in the process, as well as to express my sincere appreciation for the men serving on this team with me.

Not only is this process a considerable time commitment, but it is a tremendous weight that rests upon our shoulders. I am immensely thankful for these men who have served so faithfully and joyfully as we labor together at the task set before us.

Throughout the summer, we have met to address the most important aspects of this process. Not only have we spent time in Bible study and prayer, but we have also examined Scriptural attributes of a godly leader. Further, we have called upon Oklahoma pastors and directors of missions to gain their insight and input while extending our reach even further to key leaders across the country to seek advice and NE learn from their expertise.

A massive earthquake that struck Haiti Saturday morning, Aug. 14, and has left more than 1,200 dead has spurred Southern Baptists to coordinate relief efforts.

She is incredibly smart and helpful, but she is also a bit stubborn and even sarcastic. Just miss one of the turns that she told you to take, and she is relentless in getting you back to where you should be. And if you have ever made the mistake of yelling at the woman who lives in your phone, she will just keep telling you what to do. (Not that I have ever yelled at the woman in the phone, but I have heard of lesser men being guilty of such roguish behavior.)

But I have digressed. Unlike a map that we unfolded or a globe that we spun, the map on our phone always puts us at the focal point, and the rest of world just sort of exists around us. There is the circle that represents us and the line that represents the road we are on. And there is that woman who keeps telling us how to get to where we want to go.

But through it all, that circle that represents us remains the focal point.

That’s actually a pretty good depiction of how a whole bunch of folks live their lives these days. The problem is if you are intent on you being the focal point of your life, then you really aren’t living.

Life is always lived best when it is focused on those around you.

If you want to know what that looks like, look at Jesus. You can never go wrong living like He did.

According to a new Pew Research Poll, a vast majority of the population still uses social media. The new survey showed that the social media apps “YouTube and Facebook continue to dominate the online landscape, with 81 percent and 69 percent, respectively, reporting ever using these sites.”

This continued widespread use of social media means a lot of people are spending a great deal of their daily lives on social media. Moreover, it also means a lot of people are talking about many things these days.

As author Amy Jo Martin said, “Social media… gives a voice and a platform to anyone willing to engage.” From politics to sports, foreign policy to theology, you do not have to look far these days to find people using social media to amplify their voice.

Christians are among those riding this wave of so-

cial media, many of whom are attempting to be a faithful presence on social media and be salt and light in the online world.

Now that we are 15-plus years into this cultural experiment of social media, it’s a good time to reflect on the good, the bad and the ugly of what has come from our involvement.

Popular pastor and author John Piper wrote a valuable article in 2009 about why he was joining the social media bandwagon. He said, “I see two kinds of response to social Internet media like blogging, Facebook, Twitter, and others.

“One says: These media tend to shorten attention spans, weaken discursive reasoning, lure people away from Scripture and prayer, disembody relationships, feed the fires of narcissism, cater to the craving for attention, fill the world with drivel, shrink the soul’s capacity for greatness, and make us second-handers who comment on life when we ought to be living it. So boycott them and write books (not blogs) about the problem.

“The other response says: Yes, there is truth in all of that, but instead of boycotting, try to fill these media with as much provocative, reasonable, Bible-saturated, prayerful, relational, Christ-exalt-

ing, truth-driven, serious, creative pointers to true greatness as you can.”

Piper’s assessment rings true even today. I think Christians are finding out the hard way that it’s more likely than not that social media will have a net negative effect on the people who participate in them.

Jesus said, “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you” (Matt. 7:6).

There are a lot of Christians today casting their pearls of wisdom on social media. They then seem to act surprised when people trample it under their feet. I would therefore encourage Christians to manage our expectations of the social media world. Think about it. It’s highly likely those pearls you put out there will get trampled upon, even if you hope it will spread salt and light.

I have heard reports of Christians, who were once active on social media, taking a break from it. Others are deciding to get off social media altogether.

But if, as the polling data suggests, social media is here to stay, Christians will need to learn to be even wiser about what we say and what we do online.

After all, we don’t want our precious pearls like the Gospel to be trampled on social media.

I planned a hike that went up into some hills with lots of bluffs and rock outcroppings with indentations that look F D SThey don’t go back very I Ecaves.

Early on, I taught him that bears don’t like loud noises, so he brought one of those rachet-type toys that make an awful racket when twirled. Then my friend and hiking partner, Roger Larkey, took a vacationV to O Alaska E S he bought me a bear bell.

I C where In case you don’t know about bear bells, every time you take a step, they jingle. To a bear, it sounds like the Salvation Army bell ringers are on their way.

The noise of the bells warns the bears of your arrival.

Park rangers teach that if you’re out hiking in the woods and come upon some bear droppings, take a stick and stir them around, examining the contents. If you see fresh berries, you’re OK. If you see fresh berries mixed with little bells, run back to the car as fast as you can.

As an adult, I understand this freedom in a different way. I wake up knowing the dangers the world poses.

If I let my mind meditate on all the things that can go wrong, I walk in fear and bondage to these thoughts.

But God has his own bear bells in His Word, the Bible.

Jesus taught us, “If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31- 32, ESV).

When you have the truth hidden in your heart, and you come into a situation that causes you to fear, the Holy Spirit will ring that truth by bringing Scripture to your mind. You will have knowledge of the truth, and it will remind you of the One who holds that truth.

From Genesis to Revelation, these truths ring out. In Genesis 15:1 when God was calling Abram to become Abraham, He gave him some reassurance in the form of a truth: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward” (Gen. 15:1, NIV). Abram could now walk with the knowledge of peace.

God’s truths continue to ring throughout the pages of His holy Scriptures. In the book of Revelation, John was confronted by the resurrected Jesus Christ. He writes, “When I saw Him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then He placed His right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last’” (Rev. 1:17). And John could walk with the knowledge of peace.

God has given you truths to hide in your heart when you come into situations that cause you stress. It could be a diagnosis of cancer, relationship problems, mounting bills causing financial stress, job loss, struggling with an addiction or a number of other issues.

Ask God to show you a truth in the Bible that applies to your situation. Memorize it, meditate upon it, quote it out loud and share it with others. Soon you will hear that truth ringing in your ears like bear bells, for the lies of Satan cannot stand the truth of the Scriptures.

When you have trust in Jesus and a knowledge of His Word, His truth will ring daily in your life, and you will have freedom to enjoy the day.

“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).

Revival. Revitalization. Replant. Plant.

It wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that virtually every Oklahoma Baptist church is in the need of—or in the process of—one of these four areas. Here’s a quick description of each: Revival—The local church shows signs of life, but a God-given jumpstart is needed to refocus every member on the mandate to love and follow the Lord with all their heart, to rekindle the mission of sowing the seeds of the Gospel with their neighbors, and fan into flame the Holy Spirit’s presence within them. Oftentimes, a vocational evangelist, visiting pastor, ministry team or associational leadership is brought in to be used of the Lord to help.

Revitalization—The local church is on a downward trend, struggling in some or many areas and needs the supernatural work of God to restore health in the body by evidence of submission to God’s Word, right relationships among members, and a renewed commitment to the Great Commission (Gratitude to Mark Clifton of the North American Mission Board for that definition). In most situations, outside assistance is needed to help the church identify areas of concern and chart a path forward.

Replant—The local church is on the brink of disbanding, and the members discern God’s leadership to dissolve their current ministry and work with other churches or denominational bodies to begin a brand new season of ministry in their community (Mark Clifton, NAMB). This action is a wonderful way to honor the legacy and history of those who have gone before in the church family by closing that chapter of the church’s past and looking ahead to a new future. There are no coincidences when it comes to people God has called to serve. It is up to them to rise up and answer that call, no matter what challenges and dangers they may face.

Baptist Village Communities (BVC) is beyond blessed to honor a faithful leader who has answered this important call for more than 37 years.

Steve Thomas was presented with the Will and Nora Baskett Legacy of Love Award at the BVC Board of Directors Meeting on August 10. The award is BVC’s highest honor.

The Basketts were truly pioneers in the aging services field and highly influential in establishing Baptist Village Communities in 1958. They humbly gave their time and resources to enhance the lives of Oklahoma’s senior adults.

This same sacrificial spirit is embodied by Steve Thomas.

Thomas started his BVC journey in 1984 at Baptist Village of Hugo where, interestingly, Baptist Village Communities began 63 years ago. He eventually worked his way to leading as campus director until 1994. It was then that God called him to lead in the same capacity at Baptist Village of Owasso, BVC’s largest campus. He served in this role until 2005, when God again led him to Oklahoma City as BVC director of operations.

Thomas now serves exceedingly well as senior vice president–operations for Baptist Village Communities.

“Mr. Thomas is truly a dedicated servant. He is a very talented leader and serves the long-term care

profession with great distinction,” said Bill Pierce, BVC president.

Eddie Miller agrees. A long-time member of the BVC Board of Directors and current chairperson, Miller understands the important calling to minister to those in need. He serves as co-founder, president and CEO of Bios Companies Inc., which provides people with life-changing services and opportunities.

“It is no surprise to me Mr. Thomas received this award. His commitment to this very important ministry is evident in the love he provides each day,” Miller said. “Seniors in Oklahoma benefit from his commitment and leadership. He elevates the care for all.”

The real heroes in this story are the frontline caregivers who have pushed through their own fears, putting the good of others above their own.”

Thomas served wholeheartedly during the darkest times of the pandemic—including in the trenches alongside the frontline caregivers. But as God often does, He used the trials and tribulations to strengthen perseverance and faith among the team.

“God has shown up for us over and over and has been in every detail as we manage every crisis. He has met every need,” Thomas said. “We’ve been in a vice. And I think that being under this kind of pressure for so long has been transformative for us as individuals and as teams. In the end, God put the team together that was needed for a time such as this. God has not allowed us to be overwhelmed or overcome. He has made us stronger…together.”

State Missions Offering ‘shines light in the darkness’ /// PREVIEWED ON COVER >> by Staff As the annual Edna McMillan Oklahoma State Missions Offering (SMO) emphasis and week of prayer (Sept. 5-12) arrive, churches across Oklahoma are coming together to highlight our shared work to shine the light of the Gospel.

As part of SMO promotion and state mission education, Oklahoma Baptists produced four new videos for the 2021 offering, three of which focus on specific impact areas of the SMO.

Church revitalization in the Panhandle and beyond This has been a challenging year for people across Oklahoma, but God is faithful and is at work in every part of the world. The 2021 Offering video focuses on one such area, the Panhandle of Oklahoma and a church that is seeing new life in the wake of the pandemic.

“When God called me here, they had 23 people,” said Russell Steel, pastor of Guymon, Grace Southern. He shared in the video that God had a purpose for him to lead this small church, which grew to more than 65 people on Sundays—until the 2020 pandemic caused them to close the church building doors, possibly permanently.

Thankfully, as Griff Henderson, Oklahoma Baptists northwest regional ministry partner, shared in the video, funds through SMO are available to help churches like Grace Southern keep the doors open and grow to make a community impact toward advancing the Gospel.

“Since the pandemic, we have had seven souls come to know Jesus as personal Savior; we’ve had nine baptisms,” Steel said. “I think for a little church, that’s fantastic.”

The video reports Grace Southern is now ministering to women who have been incarcerated and are now faithfully attending the church. Steel said this was one “open door” Grace Southern did not have before Oklahoma Baptists helped revitalize the church.

“God bless you. Thank you! We are so appreciative of every little bit of help,” said church member Loveta Carter, concluding the video.

Another OSU student shared the Gospel with Robinson that night. Though he heard the Gospel “all his life,” this was a new experience for him.

“I wanted to follow this Jesus they were talking about,” he said.

DEL CITY—Fourteen people graduated from the Haskins School of Christian Ministry, Aug. 14, in a ceremony at Del City, Sunnylane Southern. Graduates received diplomas and certificates from the online school in pastoral and church ministry.

Students were challenged in a message by Todd Fisher, pastor of Shawnee, Immanuel and current president of Oklahoma Baptists. Fisher preached from the Apostle Paul’s farewell address to the Ephesians (Acts 20:17-38) “I want to challenge you to go to your place of ministry, your ministry context and serve with humility,” Fisher said. “Listen to what the apostle said, ‘But I count my life of no value to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of God’s grace.’

“Listen,” Fisher continued, “one of the worst things we see among ministers at times is entitlement. Do not be the minister that thinks that because they have a title of pastor (or ministry leader), that you have something owed to you.”

Fisher said that, like Paul, Christian ministry leaders need to respond to the challenges of ministry in humility, not thinking too highly of oneself. “Nothing in ministry is beneath you,” he said. “We have got to be ministers who genuinely care for our people. Roll up your sleeves; be with your people.”

Luis Carlos Lozano, who is serving as a church leader at Primera Mision Hispana at Pauls Valley, First, received a diploma in pastoral ministry in the Spanish language track of the Haskins School.

“I am very happy,” Lozano said. “This (graduation) has been a very special event in my life. God is big, and what He is doing among us is big. He is working through our people, so that we can reach more people for Christ.”

Jared Jackson, student and groups pastor at Sand Springs, Angus Acres, earned a Certificate in Pastoral Ministry. He said he appreciated the instruction he received from the Haskins School.

“This (graduation) means a lot to me, and I had my family’s support with it,” Jackson said. “Having this school to help me become the best pastor I can be, the support from all the professors and teachers, anytime I needed help, I was able to contact them, and they were there for us.”

Jackson said he plans to continue in student ministry and to grow in his faith.

SHAWNEE—Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) celebrated the arrival of new and returning students Saturday, Aug. 14, during the University’s annual Move-In Day. The day was the kickoff to Welcome Week, a special week each year where new students are welcomed into the Bison family.

As new students and their families arrive to their dorms in their vehicles, upperclassmen greet them with cheers of celebration and shake their cars to welcome them officially to Bison Hill. The upperclassmen, also known as Welcome Week Workers or Tri-Ws, then whisk away all of the students’ belongings to their dorm rooms, allowing the new students and their families to enjoy the moment as they are warmly welcomed into the OBU family.

Later that day, following a separate student orientation and parent orientation, families and friends shared a special time to say goodbye to their students and pray together, before heading home.

Shonn Keels, associate pastor at Oklahoma City, Putnam City, has a new book that will officially be released in 2022.
