BAPTIST HEALTH SOUTH MIAMI HOSPITAL PHILANTHROPIC IMPACT 2021-2022

Last year, thanks to your generosity, the Center for Women and Infants was able to:

Purchase 65 NICView 2.0 cameras that help families feel more involved right from the start. The cameras reduce the distress and anxiety mothers can feel when being separated from their newborn, provide visual stimulus support for the mother-baby bonding process and help families learn their newborn’s routine for a smooth transition at home. Fund the donor breast milk program, which ensures that babies who need human milk have access to this resource Studies show that babies fed human milk have better outcomes and less risk of infection

The hospital fed more than 7,760 oz in donor milk and purchased equipment to maintain it for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) population thanks to philanthropic support

Provide more than 1,000 take-home HALO® SleepSacks to babies born at the hospital. This is an important step to ensure that families do not experience a preventable tragedy, as accidental suffocation and strangulation of infants can be largely attributed to sleep environment risks associated with loose bedding and blankets Sleep sacks provide parents a safer and more effective way to swaddle their newborn

Fund staffing of a medical director for the High-Risk Maternal Fetal Unit Pre-Term Labor Program, providing specialized care and attention to high-risk patients from prenatal diagnosis to the treatment of complex conditions.

Employ two bedside transition nurses dedicated to leading the Bedside Transition Nursing Program at the hospital Bedside transition allows for a mother and newborn to remain together immediately after delivery without having to separate them - improving maternal newborn bonding through skin-to-skin contact that helps maintain temperature and metabolic levels, while also promoting breastfeeding.

Thanks to your support, bedside transition is improving maternal newborn bonding and enhancing the overall experience for more than 2,000 patients.

BAPTIST HEALTH SOUTH MIAMI HOSPITAL PHILANTHROPIC IMPACT 2021-2022 PAYING IT FORWARD

For Sofia Holtzman, it was the four grueling months she spent at the South Miami Hospital NICU with her twins Luke and Gabrielle that led her to support Baptist Health

Born at 24 weeks, the infants were not expected to survive. Sofia and her husband Ryan practically lived in the NICU Level 3, where the most critical preemies are treated She credits the staff with caring not only for the newborns, but also for the couple. “They would walk in and see it in your face: ‘Are you okay? Do you need to talk? Is there anything you need?’” she recalls. “Things like that, they were very cognizant of ”

With the help of Baptist Health’s neonatal physicians, Luke and Gabrielle pulled through, and today are healthy, active kids. Thankful for her family, Sofia now comforts NICU parents and encourages her kids to show their gratitude to the staff. “I think that everybody should get involved in some way,” she says “Whether it’s volunteering your time, making a financial commitment or just a kind gesture it all makes a difference.”

Your generosity makes a meaningful difference in the lives of Baptist Health patients each day Thanks to your support, we are driving impact through philanthropy by helping purchase innovative technologies, funding research and clinical trials, offering advanced educational opportunities to clinicians and enhancing the patient experience.
