James R. Andrews, M.D. Dr. James Andrews is internationally known and recognized for his scientific and clinical research contributions in knee, shoulder and elbow injuries, as well as his skill as an orthopedic surgeon. He is a founding partner and the medical director of Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and President and Chairman of the Board of the Andrews Research and Education Foundation. Dr. Andrews has been a mentor for more than 250 orthopedic and sports medicine fellows and more than 45 primary care sports medicine fellows. He is heavily involved in education and research in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, and he has made major presentations on every continent and authored numerous scientific articles and books. Dr. Andrews serves as the Co–Medical Director for Intercollegiate Sports at Auburn University, Senior Orthopaedic Consultant for Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Alabama and Senior Orthopaedic Consultant for the Washington Football Team. Dr. Andrews also serves as the Medical Director for the Tampa Bay Rays.

A press conference was held at Gulf Breeze Hospital to announce the opening of a world-class clinic in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

2007

James R. Andrews, M.D. performed his inaugural surgery in the Andrews Institute Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC).

2007

Sports Medicine Outreach began affiliation with Andrews Institute and continued contracted coverage for Escambia and Santa Rosa county public high schools.


In 2007, Baptist Health Care in Pensacola opened a world-class institute for orthopedics and sports medicine in northwest Florida, with the leadership and reputation of internationally renowned orthopedic surgeon James R. Andrews, M.D. The creation of the Andrews Institute has secured northwest Florida as a cradle for musculoskeletal treatments and research.

2010

Gulf Breeze city leaders allocated $500,000 to initially fund the Andrews Institute Eagle Fund Continuum Project.

2014

Sports medicine contracted coverage expanded to include the northern Okaloosa County public high schools.

2016

Sports medicine contracted coverage began for all Walton County public high schools in the fall.

2016

Andrews Institute Regenerative Medicine Center opened with a $350,000 donation from the city of Gulf Breeze.

2017

Sports medicine contracted coverage expanded to include all Okaloosa County public high schools in January.

Encompassing nearly 127,000 square feet, Andrews Institute includes numerous multi–specialty clinical departments, an ambulatory outpatient surgery center and on-site diagnostic imaging that compliments the services of its 30+ affiliated physicians. Dedicated research laboratories and conference facilities support the Andrews Research & Education Foundation’s mission to be a leader in the field of musculoskeletal research and education. An on-site rehabilitation clinic provides physicians the unique ability to have easy access to monitor and assess the progress of patients through their rehabilitation. On-site performance training provided by EXOS, a leader in the field of human performance, compliments Andrews Institute’s clinical services.

Andrews Research & Education Foundation MISSION STATEMENT To be a leader in the field of musculoskeletal research and education in order to advance the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and enhance human performance and quality of life for people of all ages.

RESEARCH STUDIES AND CLINICAL TRIALS

RESEARCH The Andrews Research & Education Foundation (AREF) partners with a wide variety of industry thought leaders to conduct research pertaining to orthopedics, biomechanics and regenerative medicine. AREF has participated in research studies and clinical trials that use a multidisciplinary approach to find solutions for osteoarthritis, surgical implants and regenerative medicine.

Regenerative Medicine Center Designed and built to pioneer the translation of regenerative medicine treatments from early clinical and animal studies to evidence-based patient care. Provides clinical space to offer current evidence-based and regulatory-compliant treatments, and houses a tissue processing and storage facility to participate in developmental stem cell studies.




Surgical Skills Lab A dedicated space for training physicians and medical professionals on both the latest surgical and non-invasive procedures and devices currently utilized in the field of medicine. Equipped with C-arm, arthroscopy stations and staging capabilities for open procedures, the lab is utilized to simulate a complete surgical experience, perform cadaveric research testing and provide hands-on training to supplement educational conferences.

Biomechanics Lab Provides movement capture data integrated with force and electromyography (EMG) data over a range of activities from ergonomics to professional sports actions. The lab is equipped with 3D high speed cameras, force platforms, an instrumented treadmill and surface EMG to provide comprehensive evaluations that encompass a wide range of activities and sports specific movements.

IHMC Partnership The Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC), Pensacola’s cutting-edge research center, and AREF collaborate on human-performance. Andrews Institute physicians and IHMC scientist collaborate on research into areas ranging from optimizing physical and cognitive performance to developing technologies aimed at helping high-performing humans like professional athletes, astronauts and fighter pilots.

The fellowship program offers physicians the opportunity to train with board-certified physicians in all areas of orthopedics and sports medicine. Fellows are mentored under the expert guidance of Andrews Institute physicians in arthroscopic surgery, total joint reconstruction and musculoskeletal ultrasound guided procedures. While training to become the next leaders in orthopedics and sports medicine care, Fellows are important members of the team dedicated to the care of Andrews Institute patients.

EAGLE FUND

The Eagle Fund is a program developed as a partnership with AREF and EXOS with the purpose of supporting active duty wounded or injured members of the Special Operations community. The Eagle Fund provides our participants with physical therapy, performance training, nutritional support and massage therapy through the EXOS Accelerated Return to Duty Program. The majority of the program is funded through our State of Florida Department of Health grant, with other funding coming from private donations.




Andrews Institute Rehabilitation Andrews Institute Rehabilitation provides the most comprehensive range of rehabilitation and therapeutic services available in Northwest Florida. Licensed and certified professionals implement a progressive approach to injury treatment that combines patient education, customized exercise, manual therapy, aquatic therapy and a full range of modalities. We work in close proximity with your referring physician resulting in a more efficient and effective recovery process.

Andrews Institute Sports Medicine Outreach The Andrews Institute Sports Medicine Outreach department provides

athletic trainers and team physicians at no cost to all 23 public high schools in a four-county area, as well as Chipola College, Pensacola Christian Academy, Pensacola Christian College and the University of West Florida. Andrews Institute certified athletic trainers work with coaches, administrators and event planners at each school to establish emergency action plans, provide education and promote awareness of sports medicine education including heat illness and sports concussions, and athletic trainers place a great emphasis on continuing to grow relationships with area Emergency Medical Services to provide best practices and preparedness for collaborative care.

State-of-the-Art IP and OP Operating Rooms Andrews Institute Ambulatory Surgery Center The Andrews Institute Ambulatory Surgery Center is a specialized facility and was designed from the ground up to be optimal for outpatient procedures. Our eight operating rooms have complete digital equipment including the latest state-of-theart technology utilizing high definition camera and video systems. This equipment allows your physician the ability to view the most finite detail as it relates to your procedure. Our surgery center utilizes innovative anesthesia and pain management techniques to make surgery a more pleasant experience. The anesthesiology department is a leader in this field and conducts numerous training seminars around the globe in addition to participating in research and training initiatives. This expertise allows the patients to have a more comfortable procedure and recovery.

Andrews Institute physicians have access to state-of-the-art operating rooms at multiple locations, including the Andrews Institute Ambulatory Surgery, Gulf Breeze Hospital and Baptist Hospital.


Transforming Baptist for the Future Baptist is building a new main hospital at the intersection of Brent Lane and I-110 in Pensacola, Florida. This new facility will keep us close to our current main hospital location and will offer greater access, enhanced technology and a concentration of related services, making it easier and more convenient to deliver better care to those we serve. We expect to open this new hospital in the summer of 2023. Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine is proud to be an affiliate of Baptist Health Care.
