About the Artist

JOHN BANOVICH is known internationally for his large, dramatic portrayals of iconic wildlife, Banovich’s life-sized elephant painting “Once Upon A Time” drew global attention to ivory poaching and his deep knowledge of wildlife and unwavering commitment to conservation continues to raise awareness about imperiled species. Under the umbrella of his Banovich Wildscapes Foundation, money generated through artwork sales has been channeled back into support efforts that promote habitat protection, science-based wildlife management and sustainable tourism.

Banovich’s work is in important museum, corporate and private collections and has appeared in numerous prestigious venues including the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, National Cowboy & Western

Heritage Museum, National Museum of Wildlife Art, Wildlife Experience Art Museum, Salmagundi Club, Museum of the Southwest, Natural History Museum, Gilcrease Museum, traveling exhibitions sponsored by the Society of Animal Artists, Artists for Conservation and showcases hosted by Safari Club International and Dallas Safari Club.

In the press, Banovich’s work has been showcased on Forbes, CBS Entertainment Tonight, The Outdoor Channel, The Great American Country Channel, Orion Entertainment, PBS, Southwest Art Magazine, Western Art Collector Magazine, Cowboys & Indians Magazine, Sporting Classics, Western Art & Architecture, and most recently NBC has written about his dedication to his conservation work and named him an NBC Cause Celebrity.

“Art is a uniquely human expression of creativity. It helps us understand our past, people who are different than us, and ultimately, ourselves.”

– John Banovich

AS I WRITE THIS I am on my way back to the USA from my 4th trip to Africa in the last 13 months. I once again felt that coveted sense of total freedom since COVID restrictions have eased and African travel is once again safe and unencumbered. My family has joined me three times in the last few years, and I am forever grateful that they continue share a love for this continent nearly as deep as my own.

Safaris today are all about family, connecting us to what really matters. I was reminded of this in June when my wife Amy, and our two daughters traveled to Africa with 30 of our close friends and their families. There was no greater joy for me than to share Africa’s ancient rhythms and extreme beasts with family and friends and know that Africa seized our souls and a part of us all will remain there forever. As my daughters will attest, a safari is not just a place you go to, but rather it is a state of mind. A space where we disconnect and then reawaken to what really matters. When designed well, you will come face to face with yourself along the way. Now that COVID has released its grip on our lives, our luxury travel brand division, Wildscapes Travel, has never seen such an interest in impactful luxury travel experiences. We craft safari experiences with the same compositional objectives that I explore in my oil paintings, weaving a story that envelopes you and sets you on your own journey and moment. Playing out like a movie, with you in starring role, no two adventures that we design are alike. Each journey is a unique fit to the personalities and preferences of our guest’s past experiences, objectives and safari dreams. To fulfill such high expectations, myself and each member of the team are involved in every stage in designing, planning and executing an EPIC adventure. Most importantly, each of our guests leave with the understanding that because they were there, they left Africa a better place.

Just being on safari makes a profound difference for the people and animals that call Africa home. Our wild places are under extreme pressure to remain suitable habitat for wild animals to thrive, but with our support of important public/private partnerships we are able to help protect keystone African landscapes. The mission of our Wildscapes Travel Company and our Wildscapes Foundation is to conserve wildlife and wild places through coexistence and

understanding that the animals that live there can be an economic asset to the people who live among them. Safari is conservation at its core.

I invite you to experience the “journeys of an artist” with your family and friends on safari and discover your own self in the process.

WILDSCAPES TRAVEL

A luxury travel company focused on community, culture and conservation.

FOR JOHN BANOVICH, ART AND TRAVEL ARE TWO PASSIONS INEXTRICABLY INTERTWINED. His lust for natural beauty has lured him across the globe, and to his mind, the quest is inseparable from the art; it’s a quintessential part of the process.

To convey the vividness, you must first experience it with all your senses, to embody it, and then pour it forth onto the canvas. You are a channel for the planet’s breath-taking beauty; it comes through you. And this intimate process of being exquisitely present and letting it permeate your being, is to let your soul be washed with the world’s magnificence.

As John shares the beauty of his experiences in art, so it came naturally to want to share them through travel. To take people to the source – to these places that inspire his work – is to share what moves him to pay homage in paint. This desire to take his artistic immersion, and apply it to travel, is how Wildscapes Travel came to be.

For us, travel is a work of art. You start with a blank canvas and fill in all the intricacies, adding layers and washes and details until finally you step back and it’s a whole picture –one our clients will hang in a special place in their

hearts, forever. We treat the planning process with John’s characteristic attention to each exquisite detail, believing that the end result should be nothing short of a masterpiece.

It goes without saying that John has been travelling this year – heeding Africa’s call, he sought out soul-expanding experiences to share, both on canvas and in life. Travel has changed – but we’re here to show you it’s far from impossible – and in fact, there’s better reason than ever to get out into the big wide world.

“Having the opportunity to see the land and wildlife with my family by someone so passionate was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I plan on doing every year. I wouldn’t have wanted to be shown Africa by anyone besides John.”

Moving, revealing and inspiring you to seek a deeper understanding of the world around us through TRAVEL. Creating itineraries at luxury conservation properties that will be available exclusively for Banovich Wildscapes Travel.

LUXURY WITH A PURPOSE

The wilderness needs no invitation to rewild. Without people around, the natural order of things has expanded more fully into its governance. To behold abundant wildlife with no mitigating human factor is more remarkable than ever, and as the world opens up, there is advantage to being the first out there – to experience these places in this magical state, before things return ‘to normal’.

And your being there can make a true difference. Conservation relies on tourism, and these vast tracts of wilderness need our support. Just as John’s art gives back, so does our travel. Each destination is chosen for its conservation ethos and for how its custodians ensure that their presence uplifts the communities and wild places they serve.

Similarly, we select each property and experience for its excellence, ensuring that we work only with those that are aligned with our style and standards. John was delighted to find on his recent travels that our partners are committed to going above and beyond to make the process as seamless as possible – and to reward you with the safari of a lifetime.

For John’s little girls, the unwalled world of the wild has been a classroom unlike any other. The beauty of travel shared with family cannot be overstated, and especially in a time when circumstances have distanced us from one other. To come together, to reconnect in a place of space, peace, and nature… there is no greater balm for the soul.

To our mind, the antidote to being confined is to escape to where untamed expanses know no bounds, and unfettered freedom beckons. All the things we love most about Africa have only enriched in this quietude, and our heart has grown ever fonder. She is waiting, and we are ready to take you to her. Would you care to join us?

"Having a leader like John who is so smart and knowledgeable and has experienced Africa more than almost any American is spectacular. The fact that he loves the animals, the people and the land and has built his livelihood around expressing the beauty of Africa makes him beyond spectacular to put the ultimate Safari together. You will never be the same if you go on this trip.”

PRIVATE FAMILY SAFARIS TO SHARE UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCES

Sharing incredible moments with the different generations of your family is the ultimate way to reconnect, explore, and unwind with those closest to you. At Wildscapes Travel, we design with intention to customize itineraries to accommodate families traveling together who are seeking a world class safari experience. The luxury of an African Safari with your family is beyond the sumptuousness of your suite, it is the pristine setting and watching your children have a life changing experience. Luxury is also knowing that shared memories marked by nature, culture, wildlife, and wide-open spaces prove invaluable for multigenerational travelers.

There are many safaris we craft that focus on learning about the importance of African wildlife conservation, which can be an eye-opening experience for a child. When you set off to explore the bushveld, special game drives will be tailored just for a family or a group of families. On a family safari in Africa, the little ones will be kept entertained at the safari lodge’s many activities where kids can interact with the local culture, have up close and personal animal experiences, enjoy campfires, and play in the plunging pools on the deck as the sun sets over the Savannah.

6 WILDSCAPES TRAVEL

Seeing Africa through the eyes of children is magnified tenfold when they discover a different world. For them, the prospect of a real life “Lion King” is fascinating. From the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara, we will introduce you to Africa’s incredible terrain and the rare and beautiful wildlife that calls it home. From lions and elephants, meerkats to monkeys, prepare to be captivated.

If you’d like us to design an African safari experience to suit your family’s needs, we have a vast range of family experiences up our sleeves that we’d love to share with you.

“In June this year when we had the pleasure of taking 8 very special families on safari, and we knew exactly where we wanted to take them. Alex Walker’s Serian, and Angama Mara Safari Lodge in Kenya. Why? Because Serian is a charismatic collection of exclusive and intimate safari camps in the prime wildernesses of Kenya and Tanzania. At night, you can feel a lion’s roar resonate in your chest cavity because the air is not clogged with distractive sound, and its clarity lets you see straight to the sparkling heavens. Angama Mara, a lodge suspended in mid-air between heaven and earth, and considered by many as the loveliest game reserve on the continent where days are filled with hot air ballooning, walking safaris, cultural visits to neighboring Maasai villages – or simply relax and do nothing at all.”

John Banovich is not your typical wildlife artist. With a mixture of past lives as varied as the oil paints on his palette, John has paved a unique path that has led him to the top tier of the art world, and to the forefront of global conservation initiatives. Born out of a lifetime spent in wild places — both as a hunter and a nature observer — his oil paintings depict raw and timeless beauty from the natural world in detail and a scale that is unmatched. These works of art, sought after by collectors globally, have allowed John to spend a career in close observation of “big things with big teeth,” as well as raise awareness and funds to support over a dozen crucial conservations projects on three continents. He has been a friend and mentor of mine for nearly 15 years, and it’s a proud, full-circle moment to feature his work in Modern Huntsman, as well as have him paint an original for us, which you see on the cover. After a recent visit to John’s Seattle studio, I had the privilege of joining him in Kenya and Tanzania to document his process in the field, and discuss his views on conservation challenges that lay ahead — among other things. What follows in an excerpt of that conversation, and the rest will follow soon in the short documentary we produced in partnership with Safari Club International. For now, may his words and work inspire you to see some of these wild places for yourself while you still can. moment to feature his work in Modern Huntsman, as well as have him paint an original for us, which you see on the cover. “Known for their cheeky attitude, the black rhino is said to ‘Charge first and ask questions later.’ It seems ironic that this evolutionary marvel is on the brink of extinction simply due to the black market demand for its keratin based horns. Having survived for nearly 10 million years, what would African feel like if this was the last century for Faru? (Swahili for Rhino )”

I love painting the spirit and movement of water!

Water is the lifeblood of our bodies, our economy, and our society. It makes life on earth possible. In Botswana’s Okavango Delta it turns a harsh desert into a thriving oasis. Thousands of animals and people celebrate the season of pula, (rain in swahili), when the Angola rainfall makes its 2,500 mile journey from the highlands of Angola to the Okavango Delta, forming a wellspring of life in the sands of the Kalahari, bringing with it sustenance and hope.

I titled this painting “Disruption“ as the giant bull truly disrupts anything in his path and all are at his will. He has lived to see the worst and best that the African veld has to offer and it shows in his torn ears, aged wrinkles and wise face. The white faced whistling ducks add a sense of movement and energy to the composition and bring your eye into the old bull. Also notice the cape buffalo in the background and then look deep into the background and find the Kudu, like Africa this painting slowly unveils its inhabitants so that you must search carefully for each of its treasures.

“The Serengeti is a vast ecosystem and harbors one of the largest migrations on earth, the great wildebeest migration. It is awe-inspiring to witness and has been going on for millions of years .

With the exponential rise of the human population, wildlife migrations are finding themselves severely threatened. Just a few decades ago the wildebeest migration would move through the western corridor in late June or early July and was estimated to lose nearly 250,000 animals to bushmeat poaching.

Today, with a large amount of financial capital and the hard work by many people at the local, national and international level the migration numbers of wildebeest, zebra, Grant’s and Thompson’s gazelle have returned toward historic numbers. With plenty of prey for the large carnivores to survive on and perhaps with a forward-thinking Tanzania and Kenya administration and international support, it will go on ad infinitum.”

“My raison d’être often finds me capturing the wild and raw sides of nature, where just surviving the night is a landmark event. The tallest animal to walk the planet today is an old bull giraffe. Often standing 19 feet tall and weighing in at over 3,000 pounds, these colossal giants have few enemiesunless they reside in one of the very few areas in Africa where lions specialize in giraffe hunting. Spectacularly powerful, a giraffe can deliver a kick that will kill a lion outright. The lion’s undertaking of such a formidable and large prey is one of great risk requiring finely honed skills, a great degree of patience and bit of luck.” – John Banovich

“I have always admired the sepia photographs of Native Americans by Edward S. Curtis and have long been inspired to capture that simplistic but powerful depiction of a subject. When the Duncan family asked me to create something powerful for their newly finished ranch near Houston Texas I was excited to explore some of the ideas I had been carrying for some time. The subject was to be the big five but when I viewed the contemporary line of the great room and dining area I knew that a close cropped, intimate view of a Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Cape Buffalo done in sepia would create a contemporary depiction of the subjects and a perfect fit. Strong, Dramatic and Compelling. Once installed they fit the space even better than I had hoped. A perfect marriage between art and space.”

come into their own at about 5 years of age. These two males now possess strong, sinewy muscularity, giving them the strength they need to take down large prey such as buffalo and eland and to defend their territory from invading males. Their body is equal to the mass of an industrial sized refrigerator but with the agility of a yoga master. They possess retractable, scalpel like claws and four inch, dagger like canines that can slice through bone. Millions of years of evolution have honed this heavily armed beast into the perfect tender killer that we see on the plains of Africa today.”

“After a gestation period of about three months,

lioness will go off on her own and seek an isolated, sheltered place to give birth to between two and four cubs. Born with their eyes closed, these four-pound bundles of fur grow quickly and by six weeks, they are busy exploring their shelter. They begin to eat meat at this age, and soon their mother introduces them to her pride. Joining a group that may include several litters of cubs of similar age is a time of social bonding that will be the collective lifeline for years to come for the world's only social cat.” – John Banovich

“There is an old African proverb that says “An elephant never tires of carrying its tusks.” I say, the author must never have met the elephant tasked with carrying the world record tusk which weighed over 120 kilograms. Man has had a fascination this “White Gold” for centuries. Used in everything from billiard balls, piano keys and other expressions of exotic wealth, the legal sale of ivory was banned worldwide at the 1990 CITES meeting. Unfortunately the ban made illegal ivory that much more expensive, hitting its peak in 2014 selling at $2100 per kilogram, and that much more exploited. Today we are losing approximately one elephant every 15 minutes and according to the Great Elephant Census, the population numbers at only 352,000 elephants, pushing the worlds largest land mammal to the brink of extinction in many ecosystems.”

2 Childhood is all about fun. Everything is a game and playtime is each day’s top priority. Games sharpen his abilities and teach him the skills he will rely on one day.

3 He has become sexually mature and his father aggressively tells him “it’s time go; run away and never return”. Alone and leaving behind all he has known he enters a world filled with new dangers around every corner, but one day everything the light touches will become his kingdom.

4 Now he must be brave. Out of his banishment he will rise to greet the dawn of a new era, becoming a tender killer existing in a beautiful but brutal land. He will face hostile enemies alone and his most dangerous encounters will always be with man.

5 He is now grown and battle hardened. He has found another male to join forces with and as a coalition they possess the strength, speed and refined skills to take not only the largest of prey, but to claim their own territory. He is mature enough to understand his fears and to overcome them. He believes in himself and there will come a day soon when others will too.

6 Now in his prime, he has beat the odds. Over the years he has not fallen to disease, poison or predation by a hyena. He has not been bitten by a snake, wounded, trampled by a buffalo, killed by a sibling, outside male or his own father. Not speared by a Masai or shot by a hunter. He has arrived at this moment, his moment, a glorious and celebrated moment and through his own grit and determination he has realized his ordained destiny to become a “King.”

7 He has now taken fancy to a beautiful lioness who has welcomed his advances, will bear his children and become part of his pride. For several days these two will be together sowing the seeds of a pride of their own.

8 He now has a territory and pride to call his own where all of his needs are met and everything he sees has become his. These are his days of “Camelot.”

9 A king’s time as ruler rises and falls like the sun and the sun has set on his time. Three strong outside invaders arrive, more powerful and more driven to overthrow his reign and claim his kingdom.

10 Again a nomad he is forced to live in the “marginal areas” as he no longer has a kingdom of his own. Life on the edge is hard and leads to a serious decline in strength and condition. Prey that he once had dominion over, he now must walk humbly past and settle for smaller scraps.

11 He has triumphantly reached the end of his journey and as he takes his last breath we celebrate the fact that he has lived a rich and full life. His legendary character and spirit will live on in the many generations of his children. As he slips away he will eventually become one with the earth and like all of us, become part of the great circle of life. “Long Live the King”.

“I have always said the day I leave this earth, there will be a lion on my easel, and Enthronement of a King is a painting that I thought might be my last. It tested me in every way—physically, emotionally and creatively. It is a work I had wanted to do for nearly 15 years. Watching wild lions over the last several decades has stirred within me an overwhelming fascination and wonder.

How can we be living in this modern world and still share it with giant, free-roaming cats? They are magnificent in every way, and there is no doubt I was put on this earth to tell their story—the raw, truthful and unfiltered side.

The power of lions forever draws me near. They are neither cruel nor compassionate, express neither joy or sorrow. Lions know who and what they are and never apologize for it. Lions simply are the King of Beasts.”

“To see a large cape buffalo bull is always an awesome sight. But to see three “mbogos" each with over forty inch horns side by side is really quite impressive. This trio was found in Botswana’s Okavango Delta as a large heard foraged along the Kwai River. What appeared as a somber moment turned dramatic as something set them off and they thundered across the shallows of the rivers unbridled edge.”

“The baobab tree has been called the tree of life. With its layered, translucent bark resembling human skin, it’s as if it truly is a living, breathing creature. In the rainy season, it swells as it takes up water, storing it in its fibrous, somewhat hollow inside to use in times of drought. Reaching up to nearly 100 feet in circumference, these behemoths dwarf anything else on the African landscape. Early one morning, I saw this magnificent baobab as the sun’s rays slowly descended her limbs. She radiated a brilliant orange light, looking just like an awakening queen.”

“‘Bahati Ya Kawinda’ is Swahili for ‘lucky hunting.’ This piece features a family of lions on a fresh warthog kill. Even though this is small prey for two adults and three cubs, it probably was an important hunting lesson for the cubs that before long will be capable of capturing prey on their own. And as with most kills in East Africa, it does not take long for scavengers to show up hoping to steal a tidbit for themselves.” – John Banovich

“The idea for the paintings, ‘The Defensive Line’ SOLD OUT and ‘The Offensive Line,’ originated in the titles, and having played football, I remember the feeling of lining up against a lineman that outweighed me by 75 pounds. African buffalo seemed to be the best candidate for that role, given their bad attitude and helmet-shaped horns. On safari in 1994, I came across a pride of lions and a herd of buffalo engaged in such a test of wills. Positioned 30 yards apart, they began to size each other up for what would be the world’s greatest confrontation.” – John Banovich

“There is no greater bond in the big cat world than between pride males. Male lions often start out their lives as litter mates, and these two brothers will grow up together and leave the family pride together. If they successfully conquer all of the threats facing a lion in the wild, they will finally arrive at the day when they rule over a territory and have a pride of their own. Like all brothers, they will fight over the small stuff, but reconcile their differences fairly quickly. One day, as new heirs defending their own pride, they will face an enormous amount of challenges, but because of their deep connection, they will go to war for each other, defining what the word ‘partners’ truly means.” – John Banovich

“‘Mosi oa Tunya’ is a work I completed from my recent study of the mighty Victoria Falls‘The Smoke that Thunders’ where I was given permission from the Chief Warden to walk the edge of the entire falls (5781 feet) on the Zimbabwe side. This intimate view was my favorite one and it gave me a whole new level of understanding of the magnificence of this Wonder of the Natural World.”

Understanding that things are never as simple as black or white and that everything must find balance in the world. Embrace your differences and accept yourself and others unconditionally. на Туньше translates from Russian to “Fisherman on the River Toonsha,” an upper tributary of the Serebryanka, mostly within the Zapovednik of the Sikhote Alin biosphere reserve in the Russian Far East, one of the last refuges on earth for the Siberian tiger. Also known as the Amur tiger, its numbers in the wild have dwindled to approximately 420, making it one of the most endangered of all great cats. It is a place I know well as I have tracked tigers in this wild, remote wilderness on several occasions with researchers from the Wildlife Conservation Society…even finding a fresh tiger kill of a large sika deer stag. Toonsha was the original name of the creek (indigenous or Chinese) before the Russians renamed so many things. The term “Рыбак” is a local slang word for fisherman, a familiar sight as tigers are opportunists who are attracted to movement and unlike lions, seem to really like water.”

CAUTION IN THE WIND

Miles per Hour’demonstrates the powerful speed and endurance of the North American pronghorn.

Exceptionally fast, this Great Plains ungulate runs at speeds up to 60 mph, second only to the cheetah. Even more impressive is that it can actually maintain a high speed longer than any other, making it a true marathon runner, and has the longest land migration in the continental United States. The sole survivor of the ancient Antilocapridae family, dating back 20 million years, the pronghorn is 30 mph faster than its closest competitor alluding to an extinct cheetah-like predator which would have hunted it on the plains. I wanted to capture the greatness of a massive

WILD CHILD Collection

I have always been fascinated by the power of a hand drawn line. A well-placed line creates lost and found areas, defining contour, shapes and boundaries, leading the eye to interpret in three dimensions. Mimicking musical notes on a page, lines evoke a reaction in our heart, mind and soul and can narrate a story with precision.

I started drawing at approximately age three with wax crayons and today I reconnect with my inner child using conte’ crayons, invented in 1795 by the French Painter Nicolas-Jacques Conte’ (1755–1805). The conte’ crayon’s ability to maintain integrity while creating soft and hard edges quickly became a medium that artists, young and old love to sketch with.

Born of my deep love for my own children and the desire to create something simple and beautiful for their rooms, with a nod to my inner child, I am so pleased to introduce and share my new sketch series called WILD CHILD.

I have been sketching in the field for many years, and nothing trains one’s eye to truly see and understand a subject better than drawing from life. I use my sketches and studies for future works. Some may manifest into finished paintings and others remain in their original status, suspended in time, as an illustration. Born in Milan Italy, Riccardo Tosi had the opportunity to experience Africa from a very early age. Childhood was spent following his father, conservationist Professor Guido Tosi, as he traveled throughout Africa admiring the wonders of it’s wildlife. Africa remained in his blood and mind even as he traveled and worked throughout Asia. Eventually destiny brought him back to Africa, which he now calls his home. After working in the hunting and security industry, Tosi found his passion for wildlife photography. He now runs the anti poaching and conservation operations of a private concession in Tanzania and is constantly working to preserve and protect African wildlife through his art.

“My earlier work was much more literal, but over time I’ve preferred to not ‘overwork’ the clay. With this looser style, collectors will continue to notice something they hadn’t seen before, even if it’s just a partial fingerprint or smudge. These slight ‘imperfections’ are a reminder of the hands-on sculpting process, kept frozen in the finished bronze.” For me, it’s less about creating a perfect replica of the animal, and more about sculpting a narrative or moment in time.” –

THE BANOVICH WILDSCAPES FOUNDATION & THE KENYA WILDLIFE TRUST

has a long history of of supporting important scientific research to preserver large conserveration landscapes and benefitting rural community development. Our P.R.I.D.E. (Protection, Research, Implementation, Development, Education) Initiative now encompasses Laikipia Predator Project, Mara Predator Conservation Programme and the Chem Chem Lion Project.

Through the generous support of a BWF donor we were able to provide a large grant for the The Kenya Wildlife Trust's Mara Predator Conservation Programme (MPCP). In 2022 we were pleased to work with the Behring Global Educational Foundation to further our shared vision and mission. The Behring Global Educational Foundation has been dedicated to improving the education, health and well-being of individuals globally by providing comprehensive, needs-based solutions enabled by innovative and proven business models and technologies. Over the years, Founder Ken Behring and John Banovich engaged in projects that shared their passion for wildlife and wild lands. We are pleased to continue to work with the BGEF board and Ken's sons, David and Jeff to carry on this dream.

The MPCP efforts are geared to achieving three key objectives; human wildlife conflict mitigation has a through innovative conflict mitigation strategies adopted by communities, community outreach to enhance the understanding of the role of predators and conservation education implemented through Wildlife Clubs initiated in schools around the Mara. During this reporting period, MPCP’s community team of Lion ambassadors. continued to work within the communities to collect data relevant for decision making in terms priority actions to prevent conflict and engage communities in awareness meetings. The ambassadors were also issued with copies of Ole Peenko’s book series to enable them visit schools in their zones to read with the children. The Wildlife Club schools were also engaged through the distribution of our 3rd series of Ole Peenko’s book.

MPCP’s community team worked tirelessly throughout 2022 implementing a series of planned activities aimed at achieving set objectives of reducing human wildlife conflicts, outreach to communities and conservation. During the month, the key activities implemented include: poison response training, lion ambassador’s 3rd review and a patrons training.

MPCP’s Community work is focused at engaging people that live around protected areas in the Mara in activities to mitigate human wildlife conflict, outreach and awareness and conservation education to achieve coexistence with predators. In May, the community team were engaged in a series of community feedback barazas, organized a wildlife clubs open day interaction and facilitated the installation of 3 water tanks in schools amongst other activities.

The MPCP community team carried out activities geared at achieving the three core objectives: human wildlife conflict mitigation, understanding and appreciation of the roles of predators through community outreach and engaging communities in conservation education through the wildlife clubs. During this period the community carried out the following activities: Lion ambassadors fourth reviews, established live fences around recycled plastic pole bomas, Lion deterrent lights evaluation questionnaire, carried out feedback barazas for the remaining 5 zones, an antipoison campaign in 5 markets and a reading of Ole Peenko books at schools.

132 RICCARDO TOSI
BANOVICH WILDSCAPES FOUNDATION

The MPCP initially supported only nine primary schools in the Mara, following a high demand from neighboring schools, MPCP extended its conservation education to other five new schools (Olesere primary, Enkeju Enkoirien primary, Olare orok primary,Talek boys Secondary and Maasai Mara Secondary school) hence increased the number of wildlife clubs to fifteen wildlife clubs in total with over 500 members.

MPCP so far designed, printed and distributed Volume I, II, and III series of ole peenko’s books to more 500 wildlife club members in fifteen schools across the Mara. The main objective of the books was to increase wildlife club members access to correct information on wildlife conservation, co-existence with wildlife and also improve reading skills of primary school children.

The adoption of the first book edition (“Ole peenko’s journey and other stories”) which features stories that resolves around human wildlife conflicts and coexistence, was printed and distributed during the outbreak of COVID-19. The second and third editions (Ole Peenko learns from Naserian and ole peenko survives the drought and other stories) is a follow-up to the first edition focusing more on climate change and issues facing communities in the greater Mara ecosystem in regards to Human wildlife conflicts respectively.

JOIN US IN CONSERVATION

FOUNDED IN 2007 BY JOHN BANOVICH , Banovich Wildscapes Foundation is the culmination of tireless conservation efforts over the past two decades. Through his career as an artist, Banovich has inspired a deeper understanding of the world and its wildlife, encouraging successful conservation efforts and awareness of endangered species and their habitats. Traveling across the world seeking inspiration for his work, John has utilized these opportunities to research wildlife and to learn about associated conservation challenges at the local, regional, and national levels in the United States, throughout Africa, including Rwanda, Namibia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, as well as India, Indonesia and Russia.

making a difference for wildlife

COMMUNITY: Creating a viable source of income for rural communities and offering additional choices to their agriculture, livestock or worse, bush meat poaching. We continue to donate shoes, art supplies, books and medical supplies and equipment to assist in the enrichment of the programs and to bring clean water in countries like Rwanda and Kenya. This past year we contributed to build bomas in an effort to mitigate the human/wildlife conflict that continues to rage in Kenya and Tanzania.

BIG CATS: Critical to the survival of big cats, is the gathering of important scientific information and data to understand the influencing trends on their populations. The purchase of GPS collars and other research has led to a better understanding of the East African cheetah population as well as lion populations in the Manyara region of Tanzania including the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks as well as the human and livestock dominated landscape of the Laikipia ecosystem. We continue to seek ways to Incentivize local communities to co-exist with predators and other wildlife.

RHINOS: Baby rhinos that are orphaned in the wild rarely survive. Our goal is to rescue, heal and to provide a totally secure environment where they can grow, roam free, and breed to ensure that there will always be rhinos in Africa.

PRIMATES: For years we have focused on hands-on medical care for the critical species of sick and injured mountain gorillas residing in the National Parks of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This past year we underscored our mission of supporting the communities with the restoration of the maternity clinic in the Congo.

“The African Community & Conservation is proud to have John Banovich as an ACCF Ambassador and extremely grateful for the generous support from the Wildscapes Foundation, to help beat the drums of hope for the Grumeti Fund’s sustainable programs in Tanzania!”

– Brady Forseth CEO (ACCF)

NORTH AMERICA: BWF has long supported ecological research on grizzly bears in Yellowstone Park, genetic research on grizzly bears in Alaska, conventional and satellite radio-telemetry of wildlife, and the use of remote sensing to map vegetation and wildlife habitat. This research has led to guiding conservation policy and management, developing wildlife habitat suitability and connectivity models, and completing largescale conservation area designs for regions in the United States, Canada, and Tibet.
