JOHN MURRAY OAM (CHAIRMAN)

WELCOME TO THE SUMMER EDITION OF INTOUCH MAGAZINE WHICH BRINGS TO A CLOSE OUR 60TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR. INVICTUS GAMES SYDNEY 2018 Bankstown Sports was proud to join ClubsNSW in sponsoring the INVICTUS GAMES in Sydney from October 20-27. The games were a great success and we are happy that we could support all the participants in a small way. RESTAURANT AWARDS It’s a chef’s hat off to Helmut Gundendorfer and his team who scooped a major prize at the recent NSW Restaurant & Catering Australia Awards for Excellence for Greenfield Station Bistro. Greenfield Station Bistro was awarded winner of the Family Dining Restaurant category and the night was capped off when Basement Brewhouse also was given an Honourable Mention in the Burger Bar category. As finalists in the National Savour Awards, Greenfield Station Bistro then took out Silver in the Family Dining restaurant category nationally. On the subject of restaurants, Bankstown Sports participates in Bankstown Council’s Scores on Doors hygiene and food safety program where Environmental Health Officers assess food businesses against a food safety checklist and assign a star rating reflecting their performance. I’m pleased to say it was 5 stars all round for all our dining venues. Well done. MPS VISIT To get an insight into our club during its 60th Anniversary year, CEO Mark Condi and I recently took NSW Labor Leader Luke Foley MP and Tania Mihailuk MP, Local Member and Patron, on a tour of Bankstown Sports, including our newly minted Flinders Centre. It was a

privilege to take Luke and Tania on a tour of the club and Mark explained the results of our diversification plans and the response to the Bankstown Sports’ ongoing commitment to the local sporting clubs and the community. CARPARKING Our 24-hour carpark validation program is now in place. While we have 1200 spaces, we have introduced this measure to make sure that parking spaces are available for our members, patrons and guests who frequent the club, Flinders Centre and Travelodge Hotel Bankstown. We can’t have our secure undercover carpark, serve as a commuter carpark. So remember, when you next visit the club and all its wonderful facilities, make sure that you hand your carpark ticket to reception staff for it to be validated. AGM At our Annual General Meeting on 5 November we recorded another positive result for the 2017-18 financial year. While profit is not our sole purpose, it is important that the club and our associated venues are run efficiently and at a profit, so that we can continue to make a significant contribution to our community. FLINDERS CENTRE The Flinders Centre, is now the landmark it deserves to be in the Bankstown CBD. It really is an impressive structure. Without getting too technical, the office tower’s 5-star NABERS rating and smooth integration into our existing facilities means it’s an asset now and for the future. We welcomed our first commercial tenants, St George Bank Business, ANZ Business Bank, Unity Bank and a UFC Gym with more exciting tenants for the new year.

I would like to thank Jason Clare MP, Federal Member for Blaxland who will contribute to our history, by inaugurating the Flinders Centre on Monday 10 December 2018. The completion of this state-of-the-art commercial building was part of our masterplan for the club’s precinct and vision established fifteen years ago. The project would not have been possible, but for our CEO Mark Condi. This building bears testimony to Mark’s tenacious drive and commitment to diversification. Paynter Dixon, our builders, did an excellent job designing the structure to exacting standards and overcoming all the challenges and hurdles in completing the project, on time.

CLUBS & COMMUNITY The Clubs & Community Awards recognise the outstanding social contributions made by NSW clubs in their local communities. The Awards, celebrated at a dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the ICC Sydney on 13 October, was an opportunity to share our success stories, and celebrate them. While Bankstown Sports was a finalist in four categories, our security team should be congratulated for taking out the ‘Collaboration For Safety In Our Community Initiative’. The CCTV security surveillance program has now been recognised for its contribution to emergency services and the local community. CHRISTMAS It’s at this time of year that friends and family gather together to celebrate Christmas, and look forward to the New Year. As it’s a season of giving, it’s also a time when we should think about those who don’t have the support of loving family and friends. So offer a smile and say hello to a stranger when you are next in the club this festive season. I will be. BANKSTOWN SPORTS INTOUCH DEC, JAN & FEB 2019

Top awards are food for thought AN AWARD FOR GREENFIELD STATION BISTRO AND BASEMENT BREWHOUSE SHOWS OUR FOOD OFFERINGS ARE RIGHT ON TRACK.

While members,

guests and regular patrons of Bankstown Sports all know how good the food is at any one of our 10 dining venues within the club, it is gratifying to be recognised outside of our own doors. While the club was thrilled to be NSW contenders for several Restaurant & Catering Australia awards we were even more excited when Greenfield Station Bistro was awarded winner of the Family Dining Restaurant category. The night was capped off when Basement Brewhouse also was also recognised in the Burger Bar category at the Awards. Restaurant & Catering Australia CEO Juliana Payne congratulated the individuals and businesses recognised as part of the Awards and praised their contribution to the NSW hospitality industry.

“I’d like to congratulate all the individuals and businesses who have received Awards for their exceptional contribution to the NSW hospitality sector,” she said. “The quality of all entries to this year’s Awards for Excellence ceremony was outstanding. “It’s fantastic to see the enormous passion of all business-owners as well as their staff whose daily hard work and dedication goes into producing an unforgettable culinary experience. This sense of passion and pride is what truly makes the hospitality sector in NSW stand out and makes the Awards for Excellence a special event,” she said. While Greenfield Station Bistro was one of our early moves in the hospitality space in the 1990s, Basement Brewhouse is one of the most recent so it shows that Bankstown Sports is

still an industry leader in the food and beverage space. Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer says keeping up to date with trends while keeping patrons happy is key to the success of the Bankstown Sports food offerings and those at our associated sporting clubs. “It’s recognition that our restaurants are up there with the best of them,” he says. “We have been a club industry leader for a long time and to receive hospitality industry recognition is both a reward for the food and beverage team at Bankstown Sports and acknowledgment that we are offering members and their guests the best there is to offer.” Some of the winning businesses in NSW competed at the National Awards for Excellence held at Luna Park on Monday, 29 October.

The quality of all entries to this year’s

Awards for Excellence ceremony was outstanding.

Greenfield Station Bistro is our unique, railwaythemed dining experience complete with authentic railway carriages featuring an up-market menu accompanied by fine wines. The Victorian-era, high arch entrance and priceless collection of railway memorabilia sets the mood. In contrast, Basement Brewhouse features up to 30 craft beers and ciders, wine and cocktails on tap, plus a delicious burger menu and a gourmet delicatessen. A microbrewery also produces our own Basement Brewhouse beers, which are exclusive to Bankstown Sports and its associated venues. Both award-winning venues deserved the recognition they received.

We Won! BANKSTOWN SPORTS IS RECOGNISED FOR ITS CONTRIBUTION TO LOCAL EMERGENCY SERVICES AT THE 2018 CLUBS & COMMUNITY AWARDS.

Bankstown Sports’ security surveillance program has been recognised for its contribution to emergency services and the local community at the 2018 Clubs & Community Awards. Held at the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour on Saturday, 13 October, the annual ClubsNSW awards were presented at a glittering ceremony, and recognise the outstanding social contributions made by clubs in their local communities. There are thousands of stories about the amazing relationships clubs have with their local communities, and the event was a chance to share them. ClubsNSW CEO Anthony Ball praised all clubs who participated in the event. “Clubs make an enormous

social contribution to the areas in which they serve, and the stories we heard were nothing short of inspirational,” he said. Bankstown Sports prides itself on being firmly embedded in the community, believing that residents and local businesses should benefit from our presence here. It is our aim as a communitybased organisation to ensure we are driven by innovation and collaboration to provide products and services which meet and exceed member and community needs. As part of that, over the years, Bankstown Sports has developed strong ties with the Bankstown Police Area Command (PAC) and is committed to assisting in any way possible. program with a dedicated Security and Operations team, as well as a network of 24-hour surveillance cameras which monitor the club and the Bankstown CBD. Our staff constantly monitor these cameras and assist the local police with their investigations, by sharing footage, gathering and transferring information on persons of interest, identifying individuals who have caught the attention of police, and general surveillance of the local area. It is estimated that this service, which is provided at no charge to Bankstown Police, saves CanterburyBankstown Council an average of $300,000 each year on staffing and service costs. Bankstown Sports CEO, Mark Condi says these partnerships allow the club to execute our vision. “We believe these ongoing partnerships are an

integral service and assist with the role we play in executing our vision of ‘Making a difference for our community’,” he said. Bankstown Sports Club is dedicated to continually strengthening its relationship with government bodies, local and state police commands, border force and Council. In March 2018, it was announced that Canterbury Bankstown Council will be installing 22 new CCTV cameras in the precinct of Paul Keating Park, about 700m from Bankstown Sports. Bankstown Sports’ security department will be working alongside Council with the installation and monitoring of these cameras, providing continued support to the safety of the local community. “Bankstown Sports values being part of the law and order of the Bankstown community and our central location assists with this support,” Mark said.

Service to Sport MEDAL & AWARDS

WE CELEBRATED ANOTHER YEAR OF HARD WORK, DEDICATION AND THE REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE VOLUNTEERS FROM OUR 45 ASSOCIATED SPORTING CLUBS.

On Monday

22 October 2018, The Grand Ballroom was transformed into a 1950s diner in celebration of Bankstown Sports’ 60th Anniversary for our annual Service to Sport Medal and Awards night. The event honours our volunteers and celebrates the success of our associated sporting clubs, both on and off the field. Guests were treated to canapes on arrival served by roller skating waitresses and later enjoyed a three-course feast. During the evening, rock ’n’ roll band Out Of The Shadows was present to replicate the unforgettable atmosphere of the ’50s.

Congratulations

to all of our richly-deserving medal and award recipients.

Volunteer of the Year

Our first award of the night was the Young Volunteer of the Year, which went to Josh Webbey from Birrong Sports Football Club for his dedication to coaching junior members. Josh has been with the club for 17 years and currently holds the role of Football Coaching Co-ordinator. During this period, he has volunteered his time delivering three training sessions to three different age groups each week and often spends his Saturdays travelling and co-ordinating different games whilst also playing himself.

Mette Kitiona, who has been involved with Bankstown Jets Touch Association for five years, was named Volunteer of the Year on the big night. Mette has been referred to as the “Mum” of the club due to her caring nature and ability to go above and beyond for the club. Mette often transports children to and from weekly training sessions during the local competition, assists in facilitating the Junior State Cup and is the brainchild of the Pasifika event which brings together the NSW Rugby League, local community and sporting groups to celebrate the Pacific Islander culture.

Young Volunteer of the Year

G.O.A.L. Awards

Bankstown Sports AFL was named Club of the Year for their outstanding work with recruiting and retaining players, their ambition to achieve good results in our Governance and Operations Accreditation Level (G.O.A.L) program and the strong emphasis they place on participation.

We recognised nine volunteers who had made outstanding contributions across our award categories of Xero Heroes, Governance Gurus, Social Superstars and Portal Immortal. Baulkham Hills Netball Club was also awarded Most Improved Club for their progress across the five key areas of G.O.A.L.

Greenfield Station Bistro

Christmas Day buffet lunch

For those

interested in a Christmas feast, and who isn’t, Christmas Day features several delicious dining options to enjoy. At Greenfield Station Bistro, there is a buffet lunch and Christmas entertainment ($92 adults, $27 children 3 - 13 years, under 3 free. Bookings essential). Bankstown Sports member Gary Hook says Greenfield Station Bistro has been his family’s venue of choice for years now, as it is convenient, there is ample food and entertainment – and no one has to do the dishes afterwards! “We always used to go to my niece’s at

Engadine but for a change we went to Bankstown at my sister’s suggestion. My niece likes it and her husband likes it too,” says Gary who has been a member for about a decade.

The menu includes starters of fresh Queensland tiger prawns, Tasmanian salmon and Italian antipasto plus there’s Caesar, Greek, Middle Eastern and Thai chicken noodle salads.

“My niece would find it good because it saves her all the trouble as before that she used to prepare all the food and there were lots of things she had to do. It’s very convenient.

Mains range from roast turkey breast to honey-glazed ham on the bone. There is also a marinated leg of pork, grilled salmon fillet, or chicken pad Thai and cashew nut beef stir fry. Or opt for souvlaki or crumbed calamari.

“I think the food is good too, there is good quality and it’s a wide selection. There’s a little bit of entertainment, too, which we all enjoy. It’s not too raucous and the atmosphere is great. I’ve already booked for next year.”

For sweets choose Christmas pudding or American pancakes, or the chocolate fountain with marshmallows and fruit skewers, or an assorted cheese platter. BANKSTOWN SPORTS INTOUCH DEC, JAN & FEB 2019

One of the best watering holes bar none WHETHER IT’S CRAFT BEER AND A BURGER, COCKTAILS AND CHARCUTERIE OR GOOD WINE AND A REUBEN SANDWICH, BASEMENT BREWHOUSE OFFERS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. EAT & DRINK BASEMENT BREWHOUSE

Given the

large population living in the Greater Bankstown area, it would be reasonable to expect a few of them to like a craft beer and a burger or two. And it’s not just preaching to the converted. Two years after its opening, Basement Brewhouse is still converting newcomers to this cosy, comfortable surrounds with a focus on good food and house-made beers. And the staff in the Brewhouse are not taking the success lying down either, coming up with new ales, lagers and pilsners to keep things fresh. Burgers too are always getting a continuous lift, with a craft beer and new burger special making the chalkboard every month. The emerging craft beer community is not all male either, with an increasing number of women appreciating flavour profiles that can range from bitter and sour to fruity and floral. The latest limited release at Basement Brewhouse is Mosaic Pale Ale with hints of tropical stonefruits and sweet berries. While the last limited release was a more wintery New England IPA is a “juicy” beer at 6-7%, the Mosaic comes in at just 5%, making it a more sessionable celebration of spring and summer. While making new brews in large batches is the most common method at Basement Brewhouse, the addition of two new 1000-litre bulk tanks allows the Brewhouse to make smaller batches, while a new nano system of 50 litres is “purely to play with”.

What’s On At Basement Brewhouse Basement Brewhouse, and it’s held its own. BANKSTOWN SPORTS CEO MARK CONDI

Staff are given high-level training in craft beer so patrons can turn to a well-informed staffer for some informed opinion about what is on offer. Customers can communicate their likes and dislikes, and that can influence new beers coming on line via the nano system which is capable of producing four batches per month. Keen Basement Brewhouse craft beer lovers, and those on the lookout for beer tastings, will be alerted via the Untappd app and social media. “It’s a new audience at Basement Brewhouse, and it’s held its own,” says CEO Mark Condi. “A lot of local business teams like it as they can come down for a late or extended lunch, they can do their team building, or hold a function, and then relax into the evening.” While the “barrels” are cosy spaces for eight or so, the function space is big enough to accommodate 50 people or can be divided into two rooms of 25 people, overlooking the club’s keg room. At most other breweries, the beer comes first, food is secondary and comfort comes a distant third, a milk crate if you are lucky, but that’s not the case at Basement Brewhouse. Everyone can feel comfortable in the Basement Brewhouse environment. “I think it all matters,” says Mark. “You can have a great craft beer sitting in the most comfortable seat in the house with a great burger. And that’s a great recipe for keeping people coming back.” Basement Brewhouse has also started to can its own brews. At present there are two styles of beer available at the Brewhouse, a Pale Ale and Kolsch. The cans are also available from the bottle shop, Bankstown Sports’ associated venues and other selected clubs.

Ahead of the pack Basement Brewhouse

is a unique member of the Independent Brewers Association, the national peak body representing Australian independent brewers, says its CEO Alexis Roitman. While two-thirds of our members have their own taprooms, only one is situated in a major club. The Basement Brewhouse is offering a real point of difference, appealing to younger demographics and extending the reputation of Sydney’s inner west as a craft beer haven. Plus the brewhouse is quite a spectacle. It’s a state of the art facility which really highlights how a brewery operates. “What Basement Brewhouse is finding is that it’s patrons are an interesting mix: from club members who discover the beers and ‘convert’ to indie beer, to craft beer fans who seek them out as a brewery destination. “The great thing was that until recently, the only place you could try their beers was at the Brewhouse, which is a fantastic drawcard. However, I understand they’ve just

created their first packaged beer run and have begun placing the IBA’s Independence Seal on their cans. So this means takeaways may also be possible and no doubt in future, limited-release, special runs of unusual beer styles will be available only at the brewhouse to encourage fans who might have a can of pale ale at home to drop by the club and see what’s brewing,” says Alexis. “We’re really pleased Basement Brewhouse is going from strength to strength. It’ll be exciting to see what they do next.” Despite the name, the Brewhouse isn’t just about greattasting craft beers, either. There is also a selection of tapped and bottled wines and cocktails. Basement Brewhouse is open from 11am-late every day, the kitchen operates from 12pm-9pm Sunday to Thursday, and 12pm-11pm Fridays and Saturdays. ENJOY GARY PUCKETT

Listen to the soul of rock ‘n’ roll. SIXTIES SINGER GARY PUCKETT AND HIS UNION GAP BAND STILL GOING STRONG.

If fame

is measured by how long your act lasts then Gary Puckett and the Union Gap are one of the most successful acts in history, still performing long after others have faded into the background. Starting in the 1960s and still going strong, Gary Puckett is one of the few artists whose first five releases went gold. Elvis is among the others. At the height of his fame Gary Puckett and The Union Gap achieved prominence worldwide, plus six consecutive gold records and Top 10 Billboard appearances, with hits including Young Girl, Woman Woman, Lady Willpower and Over You among others. Gary’s musical story began when he was small, his mother played piano and his father was a saxophonist when they met in their high school band. Later, after they gave up touring, his father focused on barbershop quartets while his mother performed in a group called the Sweet Adelines. Music lessons beckoned and Puckett was drawn to the piano. He added guitar to his repertoire as a teenager, then dropped out of college to work in bands, including one called The Outcasts. Gary had pitched a song demo to a writer and producer, who came to see Puckett’s new band, the Union Gap, perform at a bowling alley and next thing they knew, they were signed to Columbia Records.

In his career since, Gary has performed on more than 30 TV shows, including Good Morning Australia. He has also played a command performance at the White House for Prince Charles and Princess Anne by special invitation of President Nixon. While The Union Gap disbanded, Gary continues to tour the US and internationally, including joining the Monkees on their 1986 national reunion tour. Gary’s current band lineup is Woody Lingle (bass and vocals), Jamie Hilboldt (keyboards and vocals) and Mike Candito (drums and vocals).

ENJOY JOHN WILLIAMSON

The voice of Australia still on song JOHN WILLIAMSON CELEBRATES HIS 52ND ALBUM, BUTCHERBIRD, WITH A STUNNING NEW SHOW.

Few artists

describe Australia in song as well as John Williamson. His voice and unique sound are as recognisable and important to this great land as the Southern Cross is to the flag.

Over that period, John, an ARIA Hall of Fame member, has won a raft of awards including multiple ARIAs, APRAs, MO and Golden Guitar Awards and has sold more than 4 million albums in Australia.

After 48 years in the music industry, touring continuously for that period, John’s career is stronger than ever and he is still writing and recording new songs.

The Butcherbird tour will again see John take his audience on a journey through the country, combining humour, romance, environmental issues, travelling songs and campfire stories woven together by the master storyteller’s songs.

John celebrates the release of his 52nd album, Butcherbird, with a national tour of the same name which comes to Bankstown Sports on 23 March. “My new album Butcherbird has come up amazingly well, considering I didn’t plan or promise another of all new songs,” he says. “Everyone is very excited and so am I! For me, it’s all about entertainment, just like my concerts and I can’t wait to get on the road with this new tour.” John’s Bankstown Sports show will feature his latest original compositions complemented by songs from a massive back catalogue of constantly requested favourites from an amazing career spanning four generations of fans.

Since he wrote his first song, Old Man Emu in 1970, which went to No.1 for five weeks, he has continued to create enduring hits including True Blue, Rip Rip Woodchip, Salisbury Street and Hawkesbury River Lovin’, to name just a few of the 500-plus songs he has written. New songs such as Don’t Forget Me When I’m Gone and Looking For A Story will bring his audience to tears, balanced by the humour of songs such as When My Horse Came In and Simpson Desert. Never one to shy away from controversy or issues he’s passionate about, Pigs On The River will be applauded. It’s no wonder he is one of the most sought-after live performers in Australia.

STAY

Linger a little longer WITH CONFERENCES AND SPORTING EVENTS TO ATTEND, GREAT RESTAURANTS TO ENJOY, BARS TO LINGER AT, AND SHOWS TO SEE, WHY NOT STAY A WHILE.

It is

the ooh-ah moment when the glass “Willy Wonka” lift breaks through the ceiling that you know your stay at Travelodge Hotel Bankstown is going to be special. While it does not literally break the ceiling, the lift passes through two levels of the main complex at its home in Bankstown Sports and into sunlit, 180-degree surrounding views, which are a site to see. Like many of Sydney’s best features – the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, the glittering Harbour, the Blue Mountains – you probably pass it by thinking, “That looks nice, I should have a look”, and proceed to go about your business and do nothing about it. And while it may not be our famous Bridge or more famous Opera House, Travelodge Hotel Bankstown has become a destination of the southwest and an indication that the region is growing up. Currently at 162 rooms, and soon to add more, Travelodge Hotel Bankstown is in a prime location, with all the facilities required of a major business hub. While a first-class destination on its own, it is now set to offer ideal accommodation for conference visitors, and interstate and overseas guests of the first-class tenants now taking up residence in the 9-storey, 5-star NABERS-rated Flinders Centre. While business is taken care of, it is also an ideal spot to take the family for a break, or an indulgent stay after a wedding or other event at Bankstown Sports. When you arrive you will receive a

friendly greeting at reception, as you rise in the lift you will notice the famous Bankstown Oval. The beds are clean and comfortable and you can gaze out the window and wind down with a complimentary tea or coffee. Travelodge Hotel Bankstown not only accommodates new visitors to the Flinders Centre, it’s also ideal if you want to stay over after seeing one of the excellent live shows staged in The Theatre at Bankstown Sports. But that’s not before heading to one of the club’s fine restaurants or casual diners that dot the venue, be it burgers at Basement Brewhouse, dumplings at Lucky Cheng’s, a Chinese feast at Peking Square, pizza at La Piazza, or fine dining at Platform 1 – your choice. You could even stop for a snack after your show at the fresh-looking Cornerstone Coffee and Kitchen before heading up to your room. Every morning there is a buffet breakfast in the Greenfield Station Bistro with a variety of tasty cooked and continental options, plus pancakes for kids big and small, with friendly staff ensuring plates are full, and the toast is hot. Checkout is as easy as dropping the hotel swipe card into a box, validating the complimentary carparking ticket before loading the car below and heading home to reality. Next time you say, “That looks nice, I should have a look”, as you pass the Travelodge Bankstown, do so as it’s well worth the experience.

Bankstown Airport Just 10 minutes from the hotel, this airport has three runways, a passenger terminal and more than 170 surrounding businesses.

Georges River National Park A great place for a family day trip – the Georges River is the ideal destination to enjoy a picnic or barbecue, go walking or fishing or take your boat out for a spin on the river.

Sydney Olympic Park Commonly known as Olympic Park, this large sporting, cultural and leisure complex is 20 minutes away and has been home to the 2000 Olympic Games, AFL and NRL sporting events, large scale concerts, The Royal Easter Show and the recent Invictus Games Sydney.

The Dunc Grey Velodrome The cycling venue of the 2000 Olympic Games, this sporting facility is located at Bass Hill, approximately five kilometres northwest of Bankstown.

Auburn Tennis Club

New netball & football teams join the family BANKSTOWN SPORTS PROUDLY INTRODUCES REGENTS PARK NETBALL CLUB AND REGENTS PARK FOOTBALL CLUB TO OUR SPORTING COMMUNITY.

Bankstown Sports

was formed with a charter to support junior sport in the community, so it is with great pride that we proudly welcomed Regents Park Netball Club and Regents Park Football Club into our sporting community in September. Both of these clubs are now associated local sporting clubs of Auburn Tennis Club. Regents Park Football Club is an amateur club that competes in the Granville and Districts Soccer Football Association. The club’s home ground is Princes Park, Auburn and the team plays by the motto, “Never Quit, Never Fail”. There are about 150 juniors currently playing and, with the support of Bankstown Sports, the club hopes to grow in the 2019 season. Regents Parks Football Club Treasurer, Karim Kassis, says he is looking forward to the new partnership. “Partnering with Bankstown Sports Club is a great opportunity for our club. We hope the exposure will allow us

40

BANKSTOWN SPORTS INTOUCH DEC, JAN & FEB 2019

to attract more young footballers to Regents Park FC,” he says. “It will allow us to link with other partnered clubs and gain insight and support for improving our volunteerbased club. Football is a very popular junior sport and we hope by partnering with Bankstown Sports we can provide our juniors with the latest ideas and strategies by improving the service we provide. We also appreciate the financial support which will allow us to keep up to date with the latest equipment and gear our juniors need.” Regents Park Netball Club has been operating in the local community for more than 40 years, providing opportunities for players of all ages to get involved in the sport. The club caters for players from five years old through to all senior competitions. The Regents Park Netball club had a successful 2018 season with seven out of nine teams qualifying for semi-finals, of which four teams were crowned Premiers.

Looking for new blood The Auburn Tennis and Social Golf Club is looking for new members to join the club in 2019. With 20 current members who play 22 games a year at a variety of locations, the games consist of handicaps that work off a pointbased system. Each year, club members enjoy two golf trips away to the Nowra/ Shoalhaven area. Annual membership is $10 and match fees are $35 per person. For more information please contact;  Chris Wicks  christopherw1929@hotmail.com  0412 916 356

Regents Park Netball Club President, Alan Patterson, says the backing of Bankstown Sports will allow the club to achieve their core goals. “Bankstown Sports’ support will enable the Regents Park Netball Club to continue to focus on its core goal of developing netballers of all ages in skill development, teamwork and leadership,” he says. “Grassroot netball is where it all starts so we want to be able to develop as many players at this level in our area that we can.” Bankstown Sports now supports 45 local associated sporting clubs in the Bankstown, Birrong, Baulkham Hills, Greenacre and Auburn areas. These sporting clubs are run by volunteers and cater for recreational, social and competitive sports for juniors and seniors. Bankstown Bowls

offers a wide variety of food to suit all tastes, including burgers, steak, fish & chips, schnitzels and pasta at great prices. But it’s the twist that Chef Mojo adds to the dishes that keep members coming back, and bringing their guests with them. Everyone loves fish & chips, but the Btown Bistro ramps it up by dipping in a Coopers Pale Ale batter, then deep fries it to crispy perfection for just $16 – and then serves those golden fillets with a house-made tartare sauce and lemon. Or, if you are thrilled by grilled, then barramundi is your best option at just $18. The word on the bird is that the chargrilled Cajun half chicken, at $18, comes

44

BANKSTOWN SPORTS INTOUCH DEC, JAN & FEB 2019

with your choice of chips and salad or vegetables. Meanwhile chicken parmigiana, is $19, and panko crumbed chicken schnitzels are just $17 and both are served with chips and salad. For meat lovers, you can’t go past the grill with a 300g porterhouse steak at $22, with options of mushroom or pepper sauce or gravy. If T-bone Steak is more your style then the 400g is right up your alley for $24 and all are served with chips and salad. And it gets even better, because, for whatever reason you can’t get to the Bankstown Bowls, you can now order selected items on Menulog. And they say patrons at Bankstown Bowls are biased. We say for good reason.

The best Christmas buffet With Christmas Day just around the corner, it’s time to start planning your big day out. At $79 for adults and $22 for children, we think the club offers one of the best Christmas buffets around. From the cold buffet, start with Australian Tiger prawns with cocktail sauce and Tasmanian smoked salmon on cucumber bites. There is Italian antipasto, Mediterranean salad with mustard, potato and bacon and creamy apple slaw. Add a fresh tomato, buffalo mozzarella and basil salad or Greek salad to your plate. The hot buffet offers Santa’s traditional roast turkey with cranberry sauce, or honey-glazed ham on the bone. If Christmas means crackling, then go for fennel and garlic-roasted pork leg with apple sauce and crackling. Listen to the piano player as you tuck into seafood, including crispy fried prawns, fish fillets and calamari with lemon and condiments. Sides include rosemary-roasted baby chat potatoes and pumpkin, assorted seasonal roast vegetables and saffron rice. For desserts tuck into traditional Christmas pudding or Aussie pavlova and assorted Christmas cake and slices. Or get fresh with the mixed fruit platters, fruits bowls and fruit skewers and finish with freshly brewed tea or coffee.

Sports Report

Bankstown Sports Athletics Club star takes on the world at Youth Olympics

BUDDING ATHLETES, AGED 15-18, ARE SET TO REPRESENT AUSTRALIA AT THE BUENOS AIRES 2018 YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES.

When Jaylah

HancockCameron was selected to represent Australia in the 1500-metre event at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, it was a dream come true. The Bankstown Sports Athletics Clubs representative, who has competed at various State and National Championships for the past two seasons, was one of 88 top young Australian athletes who headed to Argentina for the Games from 6-18 October. Jaylah first got involved with athletics at age eight. In 2015, she began training competitively under the guidance of nationallyacclaimed former Bankstown Sports Athletics Club athlete and current BSAC Coach, Andae Kalemusic. “When I first got the call, I was mostly shocked with the news but as I let it sink in, I started to feel excited to represent my country,” she says. “I set out to achieve this goal at the start of 2017. I was initially trying to make the team in the 800m, as that was my stronger event. As the season progressed, my 1500m results got stronger, eventually

matching my 800m performances, which gave the opportunity to make the 1500m team.” During two years of coaching her 1500m time has dropped from 5:38.00 to 4:19.21 and her 800m from 2:28.99 to 2:06.21. To prepare for the Youth Olympics, Jaylah endured an extensive training program to maintain her strength and reduce the risk of injury. This consisted of 2-hour training sessions three times a week in conjunction with a healthy diet to fuel her body, whilst ensuring adequate hours of sleep. In the lead up to a race, Jaylah aimed to be relaxed and maintain a calm state of mind by utilising a range of warm up techniques. “My favourite part of the 1500m race would be at the very start where you have to fight for a good position to set yourself up for a good race. It is also a great feeling when you are running down the final straight and the crowd gets behind you,” she says.

“I was most excited to wear the green and gold on a world stage, it’s an honour. It was a great experience to meet new people from all around the world and it gave me an idea of what to expect with any future events.” Jaylah says Bankstown Sports’ support has provided the opportunities to achieve her goals. “Bankstown Sports’ support over the last year has been very valuable to me, if it weren’t for the club’s support it would have made it harder for me to meet the qualification requirements for the Youth Olympic Games. I would like to thank Bankstown Sports for their generosity.”

Jaylah placed second in the

1500m race

at the Youth Olympics.

BAULKO CRICKET CLUB, AS IT IS AFFECTIONATELY KNOWN BY ITS MEMBERS, HAS BEEN EMBEDDED IN THE HILLS COMMUNITY FOR THE PAST 100 YEARS AS A PREMIER SPORTING CLUB AND SOCIAL NETWORK FOR CRICKETERS OF ALL AGES. ITS MEMBERS WERE INTEGRAL IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE BAULKHAM HILLS SPORTING CLUB, NOW BAULKHAM HILLS SPORTS CLUB.

On Friday

19 October, Baulkham Hills Cricket Club members past and present gathered at Castle Hills RSL for an evening of reminiscing on the club’s rich history as well as looking forward to what lies ahead. As part of the celebrations former Australian Test cricketer, Len Pascoe was present during the evening and spoke about his journey as a professional cricketer, which not only included playing in the Australian Test team but the excitement and controversies around the birth of the World Series. Pascoe, along with Jeff Thomson, once also shared the new ball for Bankstown in the early 1970s. Comedian, Greg Hayes was the entertainer for the night and had everyone in stitches with his uncanny impressions of sporting personalities, past and present. This year, Baulkham Hills Cricket Club President, Chris Springall, was recognised with a Service to Sport Medal for his outstanding contribution to the club at Bankstown Sports’ annual Service to Sport event. Chris has been involved with the club for more than 35 years and has held a variety of roles including Vice-President, Cricket Coordinator, Junior Coach, Parramatta District Cricket Association Co-ordinator and was a member on the

Chris took an active role on the Centenary Committee, helping with planning for the centenary dinner and other celebrations for the club’s 100th season. Chris was awarded Life Membership of the Baulkham Hills Cricket Club at the 2018 Annual General Meeting of the cricket club. Baulkham Hills Sports Cricket Club’s longest serving member, Terry Webb, got involved with the club in 1964 as a junior player. “I’ve seen the club grow in a variety of different ways, particularly in membership. When I first started playing with the club, there were about a dozen teams. Today, the club has over 30 teams,” he said. “I became a member of the committee in 1974 where I spent 10 years as the Treasurer and then went on to become the Equipment Officer, which I have been doing for the past 32 years. During my 54 years with the club, I have made many great memories. I have met so many great people and have found the most rewarding aspect coaching the players.” Congratulations to Baulkham Hills Cricket Club on achieving this exceptional milestone.
