Chairman’s Report To our valued members, What an extraordinary year it’s been. As we finally put the pandemic behind us, I’m delighted to say 2022-23 has been a very positive year for our clubs, as the industry gets back on its feet and continues with the important work we do for our communities. Over the past few years, the Board of Directors has been focused on diversifying the club’s business operations and assets, to ensure its viability through uncertain times. I am very pleased to say the Bankstown Sports Group is in a very strong financial position. We’ve been able to contribute over $3.5m to local grassroots sport and community organisations through ClubGRANTS. This funding included a $50,000 contribution to training and education scholarships for 30 nurses and midwives at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital, in what was our 18th year of support for this cause. We contributed $100,000 towards the purchase of a Hybrid Thulium Laser Machine for the Urology Department at the hospital, enabling more effective treatment of kidney stones and prostate disease. In early 2023, we paid the final balance for our $1.5M commitment to upgrade the facilities at Bankstown Cricket Oval, and we celebrated some major international achievements by Bankstown athletes including cricketer Ash Gardner, hockey star Ash Thomas, NRL player Khaled Rajab, and athletics star Cameron Myers. Our clubs brought in $142.8M in revenue with huge improvements in the key areas of food and beverage, and entertainment. Spending at our restaurants and bars was up 50% on the last COVID affected financial year, as consumer confidence grows, and people return to dining out. Our Events Team is in full swing with school events and dance concerts returning to the Grand Ballroom and The Theatre, and it’s wonderful to see so many of our corporate and charity partners utilising our meeting spaces.

Bankstown Sports Annual Report 2022 - 2023

In 1999, he began his career with Bankstown Sports and over the past 24 years, he has managed operations across all our venues. He has detailed knowledge and experience in all areas of customer relations and business management, and the Board and I believe he is the right person to lead our club into the future.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Board members who give their time to attend monthly meetings and special events, to ensure our clubs can provide the highest quality service for members, and outstanding support for our associated sporting clubs and community groups.

As I reflect on the past year, I am reminded of how lucky we are to have such an outstanding group of people at our clubs, all working towards a common goal to provide the highest quality services and facilities for our local community. The current Executive Team is incredibly strong and resilient, which is evident in our performance results and the positive culture within our organisation.

Finally, I would like to thank our members for their unwavering support. Without you, our clubs would cease to exist. We can’t wait to take you on the next phase of our journey as we continue to grow our clubs and support our community.

“Our key focus in this new arrangement with the Golf Club will be to enhance the experience for current members and strengthen the offering within our Group, for local community”

John Murray OAM We’ve been able to expand our customer service team as our operations grow, with a 5.6% increase in staffing levels, compared to this time last year. And what I feel the most exciting result of the past 12 months is the 1,767,970 people who came through our doors to enjoy our restaurants, bars, function amenities and entertainment offerings. All of our venues have traded well which is a credit to our hardworking staff who go above and beyond to deliver the best possible customer experience. Another exciting milestone this year was our amalgamation with Bankstown Golf Club, a local favourite which is regarded as one of Sydney’s top golfing facilities, with a Group One-rated layout for players of all ages and abilities. Our key focus in this new partnership will be to enhance the experience for current members and strengthen the offering within our Group, for the local community. In May 2023, we announced the appointment of Michael Clancy to the role of Chief Executive Officer of Bankstown Sports Group. Michael has strong roots in our community, attending local schools and playing sport for clubs in Bass Hill and Panania.

CEO’s Report

“John is an inspiration to our clubs and the local community, and I’m proud to have the opportunity to work alongside him”

Our clubs’ focus on community is stronger than ever and one of the most significant contributions we’ve made in the past financial year was to the town of Forbes. Bankstown Sports has had a wonderful relationship with the Forbes Jockey Club spanning almost three decades, with our directors attending their annual August race meeting almost every year. In 2022, when the town was impacted by record flooding, leaving hundreds of residents displaced without food or shelter, Bankstown Sports made a significant contribution to the Forbes Shire Council flood appeal, to help the local community recover and rebuild. A major sporting project that we’re involved in will come to fruition in late 2023, with the upgrade works to Bankstown’s Memorial Oval getting underway.

Michael Clancy Dear Members, It is my absolute pleasure to bring you an end of financial year update on our clubs and our people, highlighting some fantastic milestones both internally and externally. It has been a busy 12 months with plenty of positive changes within our organisation. Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the wonderful achievements of our Chairman John Murray OAM, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award from ClubsNSW in May, for his tireless efforts working for our community for almost 80 years. John has served our club for more than 60 years, initially as one of the founding members, followed by various roles on our Board including the last 17 years as Chairman. He has passionately supported countless organisations including Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital, Legacy Bankstown, and Guide Dogs Australia, and his fundraising efforts for causes close to his heart are second to none. John is an inspiration to our clubs and the local community, and I’m proud to have the opportunity to work alongside him.

Bankstown Sports Annual Report 2022 - 2023

The Bankstown Sports Group has contributed $1.5M to transform the oval and surrounding parklands into a recreational and cultural precinct that the whole community can enjoy. The current amenities will be updated to include disability access and amenities for women, while capacity at the ground will also be increased. Our amalgamation with Bankstown Golf Club earlier this year is something I’m extremely proud of, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board and management of the golf club for the smooth transition of ownership during this process.

This includes an extension of our Responsible Gaming Policy to include our stance on cashless gaming, all of which is available to members on the club’s website.

have also been added to the general viewing and function spaces, so members and guests can watch live sport from anywhere in the venue.

Our Sport and Community department has been boosted by the appointment of our Sporting and Community Partnerships Manager who oversees the relationships with our clubs and community partners and will work directly with them to get the best outcomes for funding and support.

And the East Terrace has been extended to include an outdoor area with fresh carpet, a new layout, and a 6-metre LED screen, guaranteeing a better and more comfortable experience for our members and guests.

There has been a lot happening at our venues too. The Acres Club is undergoing a facelift with renovations to the outdoor area and children’s play facility. The kitchen has been upgraded and I’m excited to confirm we will have a new, very reputable caterer at the helm, delivering the highest quality food for members and guests.

This acquisition directly aligns with the Bankstown Sports Group business plan to expand on the services and facilities we provide, while also ensuring the long-term future of a venue very dear to the hearts of many in the local community. We continue master planning the site for new facilities and amenities and I’m excited to see this come to life.

The Mona Street Foyer upgrade is almost complete with two new lifts, a new staircase, and a new promotional area, all matching the club’s chic interior design. The Mercure’s foyer area will also be renovated to match, offering a seamless experience for all guests at all entry points. The Rainforest Lounge has been updated with new carpet, modern furniture, and a new LED TV screen embedded inside the rock face. We have also widened the walkway in front of La Piazza to make it easier for patron movements.

Another key aspect we’ve focused on over the past 12 months is the responsible gaming space and how we can better support members and guests at our clubs. We have expanded the Operations Team to include the role of Responsible Gaming Officer, in addition to the other initiatives we already have in place, with many more to come.

There have been some exciting changes to Basement Brewhouse with an improved focus on sports. We’ve introduced new screens to the sunken lounge for a premium viewing experience, while new larger screens

I’m also extremely proud of the new initiatives we have introduced for our staff over the past year. We have focused heavily on mental health and wellbeing, and ensuring all employees have a healthy work-life balance. We’ll have more detail on these initiatives later in this report. I’ve been a part of the Bankstown Sports Group for 24 years and having moved into the role of CEO in May this year, it has been a privilege to lead our clubs for the past few months. We have a fantastic team focused on making our clubs the best they can be for members, guests, and the wider community. I would like to thank the Board for putting their faith in me to lead this organisation. Thank you to our staff for the wonderful work you do on a daily basis. You are the heart and soul of our clubs, and we wouldn’t be where we are today without you. And of course, thank you to our members for your continued support and for loving our clubs as much as we do. I’m proud of the work we have done over the past 12 months and I’m looking forward to a successful year ahead.

Lifetime Achievement Award - John Murray OAM 80 YEARS OF VOLUNTEERING We are incredibly proud of our Chairman John Murray OAM, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award this year from ClubsNSW for his tireless efforts working for our community for almost 80 years. John has been volunteering for the CanterburyBankstown area since the age of seven. He has served our club for more than 60 years, initially as one of the founding members, followed by various roles on our Board, including the last 17 years as Chairman. During that time, he has been actively involved in fundraising for our associated sporting clubs and local community partners, including Bankstown City Aged Care, Lions Club, Bankstown Legacy, Youth Off The Streets and Guide Dogs Australia. Bankstown Sports Annual Report 2022 - 2023

Away from the club, John has also been a volunteer member of the Rural Fire Service. He helped to raise $1.5M for Rett Syndrome after his granddaughter was diagnosed with the disorder and raised money for the Leukaemia Foundation and The Lisa Farmer Foundation. In 2018, he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in recognition for his service to the community of Bankstown. And in 2023, he was acknowledged at the Clubs and Community Awards for his incredible efforts. Despite being in his 80s and living 40 minutes away from the club, he visits weekly, attends special events for our local sports and community groups, and always pops his head in to say “hi” to the team! John is a role model, a leader, and the perfect example of what registered clubs in New South Wales stand for. 10

Athletics

Bankstown Sports Athletics star Cameron Myers broke several middle-distance records in 2022-23 and made his international debut. He also became the fastest ever 16-year-old miler on record.

Bankstown Sports Athletics Club has a long history of hosting major events at its home ground, The Crest, and has always done a fantastic job. In moving with the times and the ever-changing expectation of real-time results and multi-media capabilities at events, in late 2022, Bankstown Sports Club was thrilled to be able to assist the club with a new digital screen.

Hockey In February 2023, Bankstown Sports provided funding for a major lighting upgrade at the Bankstown Sports Hockey Club fields at The Crest Sporting Complex.

Along with the screen, Bankstown Sports also funded a top-class gymnasium, and rehab and recovery centre for both senior and junior athletes to make use of.

Initially, a thorough maintenance review was undertaken on all field lights, followed by the installation of new lighting, where required.

Cricket

This upgrade has made it easier for the club to facilitate evening training sessions and more night time competition games, whilst also ensuring the safety of players, coaches, and their families.

In early 2023, Bankstown Sports finalised its share of the funding for the upgrade of the Bankstown Memorial Oval Cricket Ground. The first phase of this redevelopment includes an upgrade of the lights at Bankstown Oval and update to the Mark and Steve Waugh Pavilion to improve the female amenities and disability access, as well as facility updates for younger community members.

In early 2023, Norwest Strikers goalkeeper Ash Thomas made his debut for Australia in the FIH Pro League in Europe.

Beyond the initial investment in local cricket, the ground and adjoining facilities will also be utilised for festivals, concerts, night markets and other community events.

Yasmin made the finals in all her events and won silver and bronze in the relays. Australia broke the Oceania record in the 4x50m Medley Relay, coming second to Japan.

G4S promotes teamwork, empathy, communication, social skills, and physical literacy.

This event is an international multi-sport competition for elite athletes with intellectual impairment. Bankstown Sports also covered the cost of club jackets, polos, airfares for representative swimmers to travel to championship meets, computer software upgrades, swim caps, coaching costs, and trophies for the end of year presentation.

Soccer In March 2023, Strathfield Strikers FC hosted their annual Female Football Festival at Strathfield Park with ten clubs from across Sydney taking part. Little Wings The Bankstown Sports Group has been a proud supporter of the Little Wings charity for 8 years. From humble beginnings in a small, single plane hangar at Bankstown Aerodrome, it’s been wonderful to see the organisation transform and expand its operations across multiple cities, with a 110% increase in demand for its services. 2023 has been a huge year for the organisation. In May, the team acquired some additional space at Bankstown Aerodrome, increasing their capacity to support sick children and their families across NSW needing treatment in Sydney. And in June, Little Wings launched their second base in Newcastle with a hangar at Cessnock Airport. This new home means the organisation can support more seriously ill children who require treatment at John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. In 2022-23, Bankstown Sports provided Little Wings with funding to go towards their day-to-day operations which enabled them to directly support 75 families residing in rural and regional NSW. We also sponsored their International Women’s Day event and provided in-kind room hire throughout the year for events.

Appreciation Night The Bankstown Sports Group is blessed to have so many wonderful volunteers running our local sports clubs, dedicating countless hours of their time each week to ensure people of all ages in the community have a team to be part of.

In 2022, Bankstown Sports committed $50,000 to the program which will help over 30 individuals to grow their professional development and learn new skills to better support patients in the local community.

They are always the first ones to arrive on game days, and the last ones to leave.

In early 2023, Bankstown Sports contributed $100,000 towards the purchase of a Lisa Laser Machine for the Urology Department at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. This machine enables more effective treatment of kidney stones and prostate disease, and it is the only machine of its kind in Australia! This new technology will improve patient outcomes for men and ensures a better quality of life, post procedure. 22

Their cars are packed full of sporting equipment, team uniforms, sign on sheets and scorecards. They are sausage sizzle masters and make an epic bacon and egg roll. And they are a skilled complaints management team, able to assist with – or diffuse – any situation.

Bankstown Sports Annual Report 2022 - 2023

In December 2022, we had the privilege of celebrating the 11,000 participants across our 40+ sporting clubs at Lady Banks Rooftop, thanking them for another fantastic year on and off the field. This was the first Volunteer Appreciation Night we have been able to hold in over two years and what an amazing evening it was! It is no secret that the very fabric of our Club is the sporting volunteers who show up, week after week, month after month to keep our grassroots sports teams running. Thank you to our volunteers, your contribution to our community is unmatched!

ReLove

e l b i s on p s e R

In June 2023, a group of Bankstown Sports staff took some time out to volunteer at ReLove, an organisation which supports people living in crisis by providing furniture and other household items, free of charge.

Gaming

This charity collects unwanted goods from businesses and the community, cleans it up, and gives it to families impacted by domestic violence, people experiencing homelessness, and people seeking asylum.

Bankstown Sports takes the issue of responsible gaming very seriously and is continually looking for ways to ensure members and guests are safe, supported, and remain within their limits. We have a wide range of responsible gaming practices across our seven venues, including Multi-Venue Self-Exclusion, Voluntary Pre-Commitment, access to counselling and support services, welfare check procedures and comprehensive staff training.

Our team spent the day working alongside ReLove volunteers, helping clients choose the items they wanted, packing furnishings for delivery, and setting up a number of homes. In addition to this, Bankstown Sports contributed $50,000 to support the organisation to continue the work they do within the Canterbury-Bankstown community.

As an industry leader, the Bankstown Sports Group aims to go above and beyond when it comes to welfare support for its members and the local community, from our partnership with the Salvation Army, having appropriately trained staff, and bringing in specialised expertise, when required.

Kegs of Kindness In late 2022, our very own microbrewery Basement Brewhouse launched its Kegs of Kindness initiative, supporting local community organisations with the proceeds from the sale of selected beers and ciders.

The first organisation to sign up for our Kegs of Kindness initiative was the Conviction Group, a non-profit organisation delivering educational programs which encourage young people to re-evaluate their perspectives on health issues and improve their decision-making. The second organisation we supported was The Sweet Dreams Foundation which provides transitional housing and support services to people who have escaped domestic violence, coercive control and/or other circumstances of abuse.

We recently expanded our team to include a full-time Responsible Gaming Officer. Quenten Roberts has been involved in the liquor and gaming industry for over 30 years and brings a wealth of knowledge around gambling compliance and best practice.

Our third Kegs of Kindness partner was Together We Can, an organisation which provides care services for the aged and those with a disability. And most recently, we supported Beyond The Badge which supports veterans and first responders seeking new careers.

One of his first major projects was the rollout of the ClubsNSW “Club Gaming Code of Practice”, which came out on 1 July this year. It involved the introduction of player welfare checks if a member has been gambling for longer than three hours, initiating exclusion of gamblers experiencing serious gambling related harm, educating staff on the importance of player welfare and gambling harm minimisation. Annual audits through the ClubsNSW system are performed to ensure compliance.

For the 2022-23 financial year, the Kegs of Kindness initiative has raised $22,000 for local community organisations

BariStars

Following the introduction of new proposed gambling reforms in 2022 with a focus on cashless gaming, the Bankstown Sports Group has continued to look for ways to ensure members and guests are safe, supported, and remain within their limits.

The program came about thanks to a donation from the Estate of Bishop Bede Heather, which facilitated the purchase of a mobile coffee trailer.

Bankstown Sports Annual Report 2022 - 2023

Having a dedicated Responsible Gaming Officer not only sets a high standard of expectations for our operations, but also enables the club to move forward with future changes to legislation and community expectations. Another initiative introduced by our clubs sees gaming floor management and team leaders required to not only have RCG training, but Advanced RCG training to improve customer interactions and identify at risk patrons. Bankstown Sports has also recently revised our Responsible Gaming Policy which is available on our website. We have introduced a Gaming Plan of Management, to ensure Bankstown Sports exceeds both government and public expectations when it comes to gaming machine operations, and we have adopted what is called third party self-exclusion where family members who raise concerns with the club can apply to have a person excluded for gaming reasons.

Cashless Gaming Policy

Launched in November 2022, BariStars is an initiative from CatholicCare’s Disability Services, providing training and employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Bankstown Sports Club provided a mobile coffee cart, coffee machine, and a grinder for training purposes, while Vittoria Coffee gifted BariStars with two additional coffee

Quenten spends a lot of time on the gaming floor checking on patrons, building relationships, identifying people that may require assistance when it comes to gambling issues, and building a culture of responsible gaming with club staff. We want people to feel comfortable and supported if they approach our team for assistance.

Recently, ClubsNSW called for submissions from clubs to participate in cashless gaming trials, proposed by the state government. An Independent Panel has been established to oversee Gaming Reform which includes a cashless gaming trial to reduce the impact on gaming harm and incidents of money laundering.

machines and two grinders for the mobile trailer, along with a six-month supply of coffee beans, tea, cups, sugar, napkins, and syrups. 24

Bankstown Sports Annual Report 2022 - 2023

Bankstown Sports has expressed interest in being part of this trial and is currently preparing a detailed application. The Bankstown Sports Group supports any initiative that will minimise the risk of harm to anyone in our community, and any proposals outlined by both sides of government to move to cashless gaming in the new digital era.

To ensure momentum, the Lady Banks team continues to explore and add calendar and cultural events that attract new facets of the diverse and celebrated community.

by steering a powerful conversation between Ellie Cole OAM (Paralympian), Elle Halliwell (Australian journalist, speaker and Author), Anyier Yuol (Entrepreneur, Diversity Advocate) and Bankstown local, Jessica Zeit (Lebanese Film Festival Co-Founder) as they discussed the International Women’s Day 2023 theme of #EmbraceEquity.

Following on from the success of the inaugural International Women’s Day event in 2022, the Lady Banks team tasked themselves to raise the bar for 2023. The primary objective was to expand on its repertoire of being an event space that offers positive experiences, supported by the desire to dial up the number of unique events that attract a diverse mix of clientele. The result? Lady Banks hosted a sell-out event that saw guests enjoy a beautifully curated menu, stellar service and a quality networking opportunity all set against an incredible backdrop. During the course of the three course lunch event, multi-award winning journalist, broadcaster, social commentator, author and diversity advocate, Antoinette Lattouf, took centre stage and treated paying guests

Lady Banks Rooftop presents Melbourne Cup This year’s Melbourne Cup event heralded a technological leap for the venue and the guests viewing experience. As a rooftop venue, natural light is in abundance and while a pleasure, it can impact screen or projector clarity during daytime events. The solution came from Viewsonic in the shape of the brand’s All-in-one LED Display Solution Kit. Selected for its exceptional image quality and high mobility, this ready to use solution impressed guests with an expansive 135” display. Adding an extra element of theatre to the event, the screen was unfolded publicly for the first time in Australia, in front of Lady Banks’ audience eager to watch the annual race that stops the nation.

Miso Oishii

Mercure Sydney Bankstown

Home to a melting pot of diverse cuisine and eateries, Bankstown Sports Club is pleased to welcome the latest addition to its portfolio of dining experiences, Miso Oishii - a quick fix sushi stop for those looking for some delicious Japanese cuisine. Nestled alongside well-established Bankstown Sports Club favourites, Canton Kitchen and Lucky Cheng’s, Miso Oishii is both the first Japanese eatery to grace the Club, and a welcome sibling to the original brainchild of Jason Chan, Canton Kitchen.

Following some behind-the-scenes movement within the hospitality industry, the hotel adjacent to Bankstown Sports Club ceased trading as Travelodge Hotel Bankstown and transitioned to the Mercure Sydney Bankstown, officially opening for business under its new name on 1 July 2022.

In translation, Oishii means ‘yummy’ in Japanese and the Miso Oishii menu is just that! Charmingly simple, the service is fast, the food is fresh and the menu offers a collection of standout dishes ranging from a comprehensive variety of Maki Rolls and Nigiri, to Katsu for those who would like something warm and a little more filling. Following the success of his steerage of Lucky Cheng’s and his introduction of Canton Kitchen, Miso Oishii is another feather in the bow of Bankstown Sports Club’s authentic Asian cuisine offering, this time with a little twist of fun and frivolity which is key to the Miso Oishii brand.

Over the past 12 months, several soft refurbishments have been carried out to update the look and feel of the guest rooms, with new carpet and fresh paint. There are also plans for a new guest lobby to tie in with the refreshed Mona Street Foyer inside Bankstown Sports, which will improve the flow from the club to the hotel. Mercure Sydney Bankstown General Manager, Jack Hamilton, says guests have embraced the changes.

Ultrafade

“We want to position the Mercure as a market leader in the Bankstown area. We want to set the standard for hotel expectations in the region and be the chosen accommodation choice for travellers of all kinds.”

We are delighted to introduce Ultrafade to our Bankstown Sports family! Joining us earlier this year and located right near Restwell reception, the team work to transform their customers’ locks into true masterpieces – it’s a sight to behold as they colour, cut, fade and style with artistic flair and imagination!

“We have retained the majority of staff that were employed by Travelodge which has made the transition for management – and our guests – seamless”.

At the core of this collaboration with Ultrafade was a shared passion for delivering exceptional experiences and igniting new energy in our newest part of the club, our New York Walkway. Their dynamic team of elite stylists have infused a fantastic atmosphere in our venue and have provided a unique and highly demanded service to Bankstown. Bankstown Sports Annual Report 2022 - 2023

Our

Venues

Bankstown Golf Club

The focus in the first few months since the amalgamation has been on modernising the clubhouse, namely updating the carpet and giving the building a fresh coat of paint. In the second half of 2023, we will transition the catering from the current operators to move under Bankstown Sports Group management, and we will also look to update the furniture inside the venue.

Bankstown Bowls Club

Birrong Sports Mario and Carla continue their fantastic work at The Italian Bistro with a 43% increase in trade compared to last financial year. The restaurant also had record Mother’s Day trade.

Our members are enjoying the recent facility upgrade which included a fresh coat of paint and some new carpet, off the back of a new catering team starting in the bistro.

Looking ahead, we’re working on plans to further upgrade the outdoor space at the club.

We also reached an agreement with Tabcorp to set up a small digital TAB within the venue.

Baulkham Hills Sports

The Acres Club Plans have been developed to build a new undercover deck out the front of the club which will allow patrons to enjoy a meal, a drink, or a function in any weather event. There will also be two new kids’ play areas, a total kitchen redevelopment, and a brand-new caterer.

When the Venue Manager at Baulkham Hills Sports Club decided to move on, rather than looking externally for a replacement we decided to look within the organisation to see who may be the best fit to take over the role. Sam Chan, who had been working at Birrong Sports Club has made the move to the Hills Shire to take up the vacancy. Adam Green, who had previously worked at Auburn Tennis Club then moved to Birrong Sports.

Auburn Tennis Club Auburn Tennis Club continues to thrive with its strong team of long-standing staff. Their commitment to upholding our values and delivering exceptional service creates a welcoming environment for our members and guests from the neighbouring tennis courts.

Tony Choueifati moved from Bankstown Bowls to Auburn Tennis Club. And Kate Hynek who was a Senior OSM at Bankstown Sports was promoted to Venue Manager of the Bowls Club. These managers are now getting to experience another venue with new staff and different operational needs which is fantastic for them, and also strengthens the Bankstown Sports Group as a whole.
