2012 – 2013 Annual Report on Giving School for Children and Family Center

2

Our Mission The mission of Bank Street College is to improve the education of children and their teachers by applying to the educational process all available knowledge about learning and growth, and by connecting teaching and learning meaningfully to the outside world. In so doing, we seek to strengthen not only individuals, but the community as well, including family, school, and the larger society in which adults and children, in all their diversity, interact and learn. We see in education the opportunity to build a better society.

A Message from the Dean Dear Friends, It is a pleasure to send you this report on Annual and Capital Giving for 2012-2013, and as always, I am extremely grateful for your support and generosity. Our fiscal year ended on June 30, 2013, and I am proud to announce that in the 2012-2013 school year we raised a collective $835,684 for the School for Children and Family Center. Gifts and pledges to strengthen and sustain the School for Children’s endowment total $4.3 million since the start of a special endowment campaign two years ago. Collectively, all of these gifts represent strong measures of support that help to solidify our foundation of academic excellence, both now and in perpetuity. It is with heartfelt sentiments that I thank each and every one of you for your wonderful commitment to our exceptional community. In particular, I must also highlight that for the third consecutive year, current parent participation in the School for Children’s Annual Fund was an extraordinary 89%! This continues to be a remarkable achievement, and it greatly encourages and validates the daily efforts of the faculty and staff who work so hard to support our children. These results would not have been possible without the leadership and dedication of our strong network of parent volunteers. In particular, I would like to thank Jeremy Parker SFC ’89 and Jane Ringel, Co-chairs of the Development Committee; Andrea Goren and Pamela Bol Riess, Co-chairs of the Annual Fund Campaign; David Guyer and Sandra Pinnavaia, Co-chairs of the School for Children Endowment Campaign; and all of the solicitors and volunteers who helped with our philanthropy efforts during the year. I would also like to thank the members of the Development Office: Director of Annual Giving, Tiffani Harris; Director of Endowment and Special Gifts, Carla Scheele; and all of our other important colleagues of the College’s Development and External Relations Office. Finally, thank you for your support. Your time, talent and resources are working to ensure a very bright future for our school and students. Sincerely,

Alexis S. Wright Dean, Children’s Programs

Did WhyYou I Give… Know?Through the Eyes of a Family Center Alumna

“From the moment I entered the Family Center, I knew it was the right place to be; there were heartwarming staff members who gave personal attention and love to every single child. The Family Center taught a lot of values that I’ve taken in life: friendship, happiness, and respect. As part of my Bat Mitzvah, I decided to give back to organizations that have meant something to me. I give, so others can have more memories full of happiness and love.” Maya Lender, age 13 10

Securing a Progressive Future In a historic project to support the present and future of the School for Children and its role in Bank Street College of Education, the Bank Street Board of Trustees approved a focused endowment campaign with a goal of $8 million, to be achieved with the partnership of Bank Street families, alumni and current, in phases over four years. As we approach the end of the second year of the most significant effort the School has ever undertaken to secure its mission and future, we are happy to have the opportunity to acknowledge the following leaders who have made commitments, to achieve a total of $4,283,824 in gifts and pledges to since commencing the campaign in September 2011. The campaign continues, as the School and its partners reach out to the Bank Street community. An announcement and celebratory event will kick-off the public phase of the campaign later in the 2013-14 school year. Thank you to our generous community!
