He also mentioned that the relief operation team had setup two repacking centers --one in Laguna Provincial Hospital in Calamba City and one in Santa Cruz to serve Districts 1 and 2, as well as Districts 3 and 4, respectively. The Governor also extended burial assistance worth Php10,000 for the victims of the said calamity. Lastly, he included in his speech that he’ll be giving anniversary bonus, in addition to the productivity bonus for the year 2013. The Foundation Anniversary was celebrated annually to commemorate the people behind the establishment of the old Laguna as a repartimiento on July 28, 1571.***

As the new academic year started, Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Main Campus initiated its participation for this year’s LiGa ng Kapaligiran, June 2014.

Linis at Ganda ng Kapaligiran or commonly known as Li-Ga ng Kapaligiran is a recognized environmental project of the Extension Services and Linkages Unit of this

University by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The said activity was being participated by different colleges which include College of Teacher Education (CTE), College of Industrial Technology (CIT), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Computer Studies (CCS), College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT), College of Nursing and Allied Health (CONAH), College of Engineering (COE), College of Business Management and Accountancy (CBMA) and College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE). CTE have started doing

activities regarding this matter. Regular classroom beautification and maintenance were being implemented. Meanwhile, CAS had done a tree planting activity at Pila, Laguna. Further activities were already planned by other colleges for the whole academic year. Aside from the abovementioned ones, Li-Ga ng Kapaligiran mainly implies three component projects; (1) maintenance of plant box along the 0.8 km fence, (2) annual competition for the Most Beautiful and Cleanest area, and (3) reforestation activity. The winners will be announced at the end of the school year.***

Flash up gradation Q

uality service mirrors the institution, and a productive institution mirrors the leaders. True as the adage goes for an institution like the Laguna State Polytechnic University-Santa Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC) who was recently recognized as one of the top performing State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in CALABARZON. And for that, it was really two thumbs up not only for the administration, but to the whole institution as well. The growth of LSPU in most aspects as an institution – a prestige and premier university in CALABARZON in particular, is now becoming more evident. Constructions of new buildings equipped with state of- the art equipment and modernized archetype is just one example. Perhaps, it’s just one plot out of several plans that was accomplished by the incumbent administration, yet it created an enormous impact on the progress of LSPU. True to its mission: “LSPU provides quality education through responsive instruction, distinctive research, sustainable extension and production services for improved quality of life towards nation building,” truly, LSPU is really taking a big leap towards achieving its mission. Second, the new and first ever constructed university fitness center which allows students and even faculty to use for free. Infant as it was, fitness center still lack fitness machine and other health equipment, for it had been just less one year of construction, but enough to accommodate students’ needs. Taking back a year ago, the plan of constructing the fitness center for the sports development and wellness of students was first announced on the public during the opening ceremony of the Sports Fest 2013. What a speedy mobilization of the project, wasn’t it? LSPU despite of its effort to continuously develop the campus in terms of infrastructures, equipment had been destroyed by the consecutive typhoons that struck the country. The aftermath of the two consecutive typhoons , typhoon Glenda and Inday brought strong impact on the lives of many Filipinos which resulted of course to destruction of million worth of houses and properties, and worst case scenario of all, the casualties. Due to great devastation of many infrastructures and most of the power lines, the supply of electricity to almost one-third of Luzon was cut and therefore ensued to total black-out. Because of that, almost a week when classes in all levels in mostly affected areas in Luzon were announced cancelled, and LSPU is one of those. Further, the disaster did not hinder the LSPU community to rise back again from its original picture – a clean and green campus, a home offering not just quality education, but also quality service and facility. With the concerted effort and strong will to rise, LSPU community had regained its momentum. The yearly increasing rate of the enrolment and growing number of high calibre professors were an indication of the strong support of the University for their Professional Growth and development. Concurrently, they’re taking their way, which of course give rise to productive and quality service they offered to the students, were just few to mention those indications of improvement of LSPU. Moreover, not only in terms of infrastructure LSPU aimed for but also for the improvement of its curricular offerings which is tantamount to CHED agenda for SUCs. Its penultimate reason for improvement was to produce competent graduates who can find her/his place in the global work market. It was also in this context the mere fact of the forthcoming ASEAN 2015 in which the university was very much aware of. We salute people behind the LSPU’s improvement, from the key officials of the university who worked hard each day for more projects for the welfare and betterment of the students and university. Kudos, to the cohesive effort and determination of the professors, mentors, faculty, staff for providing valuable services to the students. Progress can truly be achieved if everyone in one direction aimed to reach out for the common objective. It’s just one leap and still waiting for another to reach out another absolute gradation we are all looking into.***

Let me start my column by giving you my dear readers this one word. EQUILIBRIUM. It’s not always as simply as solving any other mathematical or scientific problems through using various formula such as the Pythagorean Theorem of Pythagoras in Geometry A2 + B2 = C2 or the Relativity Theory of Einstein in Physics E = mc2. However, it’s not also as complicated as factoring algebraic expressions like y2 – 2xy + x2 = y - x and balancing chemical equations in Chemistry like 2Ca (OH)2 + Al2 (SO4)3 --> 3CaSO4 + Al2 (OH)3. In other words, it’s in the midpoint. Okay. Let me clear one thing. I am not inclined on mathematical or numerical abilities. Actually, mathematics is my frustration. Either way, I’m not taking any Engineering course. I’m actually taking business course. So by now, I bet, one thing is bothering you right now. What’s the point of explaining all of these? As we grow older, we come to the point wherein we realize various things. Maybe that’s the common part of becoming mature. We tend to change our perception and mind set on certain things. However, that doesn’t mean that if we had this turning point of perception, we will also likely to have a better one. Definitely not! Well, if you understand my point, then you are matured enough, and if not, it’s the other way around. Newton’s third law of motion, the Law of Interaction which states that, “In every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction.” It’s also like the causeand-effect relationship of things. Whatever you do to others would somehow happen to you. And since we are now on the digital age, others call it ‘digital karma’.

Likewise, in school, we often experience those scenarios which we felt awkward or should I say biased feeling. We tend to choose one over another; we tend to do one over another and alike instances. For what reason? Can we say it’s because we just want to? Obviously, not! In everything we do, there’s a reason behind. From the early morning news until the late midnight news,

“It

is not what goes inside the mouth that makes it unclean, instead what goes out of the mouth.”

-Matt. 15:11 all we can see are the different maladies that slowly crippling our economy. And the worst thing of it is that, bigger part of this came from the people in the government itself. Corruption of public funds, insurgency, side by side killings, and the rest more. I don’t want to put prejudice on the line. What I’m trying to input here is most of the time we are encountering different stories and issues which are really cliché to all of us. And in order to give new taste or at least just add vigor to my last column in broadsheet, I chose this topic. It’s not what goes inside

the mouth that makes it unclean, instead what goes out of the mouth. A verse quoted from the bible. Indeed, it’s really a good reminder to all of us that words we speak can make us turn into filthy flesh. Word is considered a powerful medium. It can start a flame, it can kill, it can punish, it can grace, it can destroy, it can create, and it can do anything. As a writer, a student journalist in particular, words are great part of me. It is my lifetime buddy. Well, in fact, it’s our lifetime buddy. Whenever I speak of my mind, I used words to manifest my feelings toward certain issue. On our world today, you are not belong when you are not aware with the current trends – from the latest gadgets, applications, fashion statements and the SNS or social networking sites. Today, we have on our SNS the facebook, twitter, Instagram, multiply, and many more. And most common we have is the facebook. Everyone has the access to it. You can post pictures or status, like, comment, share and even chat with anyone, you can do it all in facebook. Let’s go back again on the word I gave you. Equilibrium. This means balance or equal. Sometimes we cannot escape from being chauvinist. We have preferences which resulted of course from being bias on a certain matter. In this world, we can’t deny that fact because we’re still in flesh. Nevertheless, we have to learn how to overcome that attitude. As a writer, I encountered different situations wherein tested my personality as a person. There are instances that I am impulsive and I can speak things which I actually don’t

Have you ever thought about the meaning of freedom? To me, freedom is when each day passes, you were able to do the things you want without being forced by someone. Freedom is when you can voice out what you want to express and let it be heard. It is when you can do all things to achieve something. It is when you were able to make a decision and choose for

yourselves. Freedom is when I can show who is the real me, what I like and what I don’t. Freedom is accepting the things that you have and what you want to have. It allows me to choose what the best are for me. Because of freedom, I can dream an impossible one and can turn it into possible for me. And freedom is your own choice not the others. Now I know that you have the

ability to exercise your free will and make choices independently, but there is always a limitation; limitation when you exceeded the boundaries or when you did too much. With that, can we conclude that freedom is not free? For some instances, yes, freedom is not always free. Even though everyone knows that we are on a democratic country

“Giving ‘Magic’ the basketball is like giving Hitler an army, Jesse James a gang, or Genghis Khan a horse”.

up blaming others because we’re too craven to admit that we’re

the ones to be blame for it. Why there are squatters in Manila? Because some of them were living in a province and decided to change the state of their lives. If they didn’t get job in Manila their source of money scarce. In the end, they can’t go back to where they once live. They will build small houses along the rivers or inside a private lot. After that, some of them will become snatchers, kidnappers and killers. Our President decided to make housing project for them. There are relocation sites in some provinces circling Manila. But we can’t hide the fact that some Filipinos are hardheaded. They still don’t go to the relocation sites. Maybe they want to make their life story miserable and ungrateful for themselves. Moreover, why there are so many “batang lansangan” roaming around our country? According to a study about trees, trees tend to bear fruits when they were stressed. The more a tree was stressed, the more

Our country was said to be one of the “developing countries” in Asia. Philippines was called “developing” ever since. When can we declare that our country was already “developed?” Our President’s SONA has caught the attention of his very own bashers. There are different rallies outside Malacañan saying their needs and wants. Why don’t they try to become a President for just one year? I hope they can at least do what they always protested to P-Noy. Some of us tend to blame our endless poverty to our former and present leaders. If you become a president and your people don’t cooperate, will you succeed on doing your plans for them? We designed ourselves to that situation. We always end

Lesser is Better I was actually thinking of a nice topic or should I say a more mature subject that I’m going to share. Yeah, I want it to be more mature in a way that everybody would say, “Yup, it’s true!” or someone would exclaim, “I can feel you!”, after reading this article. Of course, this would be my last shot to open up something on a newspaper so I want it to be more memorable as possible. So I guess this topic, which is just a collection of random thoughts, will definitely satisfy your mind. Let’s start.

Let me ask you a simple question. “Have you ever expected something from anyone?” It could be a new gadget from your mom, bags and shoes as a birthday gift, attention from your long-time crush or even that so-called love from a special person. I’m pretty sure you’re answer would be yes, am I right? Who wouldn’t? Frankly speaking, I also expect something from other people. I mean as of now, I was expecting for a good Samaritan who will hand me a brand new IPhone, though it

seems really impossible. Still, it’s just an expectation and there is nothing wrong with that. But seriously, all of us expect and it is definitely a normal thing to feel that way. But sometimes, expectation wasn’t good at all, most especially if you expect more than the usual. Then next thing you’ll know is that expectation turned out to be distraction. When you’re still young, you used to have those kid stuffs like candies, toys, clothes and so much more.

where in Filipinos worked hard for it, still, we have the enough knowledge to limit ourselves from exceeding. Freedom of choice, freedom of self-expression and freedom of choosing religion are just few examples that need to be defended and protected in terms of individual freedom. It is perhaps my main purpose why the idea of freedom is not free came up to my mind. That aforementioned notion is always a matter in our country, institution or even in a small group of people when they go over in freedom as it sometimes became the basic reason when there is discrimination or an act of inequality exists. It is not fair for us when someone abused freedom; to have the power for themselves. Freedom will not always give you the best result for something you desire. It may also cause you something that your parent doesn’t want for you. It is not always there because freedom can make you a different

person. Freedom is not always free as there is sometimes that you won’t able to do something for you. A human life might change when freedom was mishandled especially on today’s generation. As a student, it also matters for us. Maybe, you’ve already

“Freedom

will not always give you the best result for something you desire.” experienced it for the longest time of your life like when you were about to step in college. Some of us, students, were dictated by our parents on what path we were about to take. Some may not have the chance to explore

things for themselves. Some were unhappy when someone ruled over themselves. Maybe this is the most common scenario about the freedom between the student-children and their parents. Another scenario is when you want to explore your teenage life. As a teenager of today’s generation, it is typical for us to experience something new. Teens are usually on the stage wherein they are finding themselves on the society. It is important for us to have our freedom but we must always know your limitation. Being a student too, I also encountered the same thing. I remember when I graduated from secondary and my parents dictated me. It is like they stole something from me – they stole my dreams. Another is when they were very strict to me in terms of my social life. But now, I realized Continue to pg. 9

We are the government the fruits it bears. Filipinos are like trees. The more they were stressed about their lives, the more children they might bear. In result? They can’t feed them. They will set them to “Child Labor”. They will soon be added to the criminals exceedingly roaming around our country. We always rely on our government that we forgotten that they are not responsible

for our daily living. They are not Christ for heaven sake! They’re just also humans. Why don’t we try searching for a job? We are also leaders— leaders of ourselves. We govern our lives. Why don’t we make it in the right path? Destiny is never written in our palms or in the books of some oracles. Destiny is made. We make our own destiny by choosing the right from wrong.

Does President Aquino wants his administration to fail? Of course not! He did everything for us. He needs our help, our cooperation. If we want to develop our lives, don’t bash. Make yourself a worthy one. Pieces of sand maybe microscopic and for others it is called a dirt but when

There’s also then cuddle and loving moments with your mom and dad after their long and tiring day at work. Of course, there are instances that we didn’t get what we want, right? Then you’ll start to cry out loud and show how frustrated you are for you didn’t get what you expect from them. But as you grew older, we used to adapt ourselves in this kind of attitude wherein “expectation” is a man’s nature that expectation is just a part of a life cycle. But the real question is, “why do we expect?” The answer is just two reasons. First, we expect because it is our very own way of being optimistic. Just like what other people would say – be positive, think positive and stay positive. So as part of being a positive person, we are hoping that everything will fall out the way we want it to. That everything we had planned will come up to be a successful one. Just like this, if you are joining an international competition, your mind set is to win and bag the gold medal out of it. Then, that is expectation. If you return a purse with onehundred thousand pesos, you’re actually thinking of a reward as

a return favor for your kindness towards other people. Again, that is expectation. If you are giving your full attention and affection to that special someone, then you’ll be expecting for the same affection you had given. Yet, it’s still an expectation. See? Those cited situations are just few examples of those ‘I-amexpecting’ moments that an average person may encounter. I am also pretty sure that there

we mistakenly treated it as a very serious matter. But in reality, there is nothing special about it. Then next thing you’ll know is that something is really going on. Just like those movies out there showing off how a girl befriended a guy for she consider him as a friend than a lover – instant friend zoned, right? Well, that’s life and that’s how ‘obvious signs’ worked. So be aware of every single sign because it may harm someone else or worst, even you. Expectation is just a normal thing. As I have mentioned in the previous paragraphs, all of us had encountered this kind of scenario. It could happen anytime, anywhere or in any kind of situation we are into. But what I am trying to stress out is just one thing. Do not expect too much, because high expectation could k ill you. Yeah, maybe it will not kill you literally, as if blood is flowing out of your body. But that certain feeling after a failed expectation ---- is so damn hurtful. I am sure that no one wants to be treated in that kind of manner. Let me

“Never

assume, unless otherwise stated.” are more of these stuffs out there where everybody had already experience. Last and foremost, we are expecting because ‘the signs are too obvious’. There are times that we are blinded by someone’s kindness and very caring attitude. It includes sweet conversations, hi and hello and much like that. Apparently, we appreciate and

8 Communicating nowadays is as easy as 1+1=2. Before, people would reach each other through calls and phone messages but it don’t stop there. We usually don’t get proper signals and receive late messages that’s why Computer Programmers and Developers invented a new way and a faster way of communication- thru Social- Networking. Not only for a better way of interaction with other people but also for a more effective strategy to disseminate pieces of information. These social networking sites can be risky to teenagers but if it is used properly, these sites can give positive effects to adolescents. Before Skype and Facebook, the Yahoo Company first introduced the Video Calls. It was a good way of communicating to other places and countries. It was widely used by our OFWs to reach their families here. But aside from these benefits, there’s always somebody who would abuse using this kind of service. This Yahoo Messenger (YM) becomes a way of selling

people’s flesh but worse than that, minors are the common victims. YM was removed on the top social networking sites but the problem on cybersex is still present. For me, the best ways to solve the issue are the following: parents should always check the sites that their children enter or visit. Computer Cafés should not

“Deciding

whether to have an account or not is a prerogative.” let their costumers to log-in to pornographic or adult websites. Lastly, we the teenagers of today, let’s have some pride for ourselves, stop being too much conscious and let the world guide us in our respective paths. Have you ever experienced Hyper-Networking?

If you have done this (more than three hours on social networks per day) and hyper texting (more than 120 text messages per day). I usually do that, oops! Oh yes! I do that regularly. According to Western Reserve School of Medicine, hyper-networking was associated with depression, substance abuse, poor sleep patterns, suicide and poor academic performance. But I only experienced poor sleep patterns and that was also the reason I gained pimples and it’s terrifying. For those who experienced the same and more than that, it’s time to change for a while. Everything that is mistreated and misused has its own big consequences that we must face. Facebook likes and good comments are positively overwhelming. That is the reason we often receive messages like “Ate/ Kuya, palike naman po ng DP ko.” It sounds so pathetic. Do they really need more than a hundred likes? For what? To attain popularity? Another good effect of social media is it unleashes

Privacy Blast potentials. Remember Justine Bieber and Charice Pempengco who were first discovered on Youtube? Now they have almost reached the top. Here comes another but, it is not always a good comment. We sometimes encounter negative feedback and eventually enter in the world of cyber bullying. The most famous victim of it is Paula Jamie Salvosa or popularly known as AMALAYER. After showing her life in Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK),

ABS-CBN Paula gained a lot of good praises from Filipinos worldwide and named her as “Princess of God”. That is how social- media can change our lives. Books turn into E-books, just a click and there you have it. Movies up-to-date and other software are just less than 12 hrs of waiting and BOOM! “Pwede ka nang mag-GM at magpost ng -Movie Marathon blah..blah.. blah..” If you don’t pay for those

benefits, that is illegal my friend! Film producers and book writers lose tons of money because of these sites. So beware if you plan and dream to publish a book or produce a movie these sites can be your no.1 opponent. And here’s a tip, if you really want to publish something, upload it on Wattpad because that site gives a copyright privacy that you are

Just Respect Being a young Christian country, we believed that it is obliged to follow and respect our parents as what the 10 Commandments entails. In so doing, parents are great factors in molding and producing such a morally and intellectually oriented individual. Parents are the roots of the future generation and they have the right to intervene with every decision their children are going to make. We, the younger

race, might see our parents as hindrances to those things that we’d love to do; partying, dating, leisure time and others. They are usually overprotective in every aspect of our lives. But sometimes we see those things in a negative way — no exemptions. However, it is written in Exodus, “Honor your father and your mother that you may have a long life in the land that God has given to you.” A promise of assurance had given that we

young Christians must believe in. This promise isn’t literally what it means but rather it is referring on how our parents molded each of us to enjoy life and spend it to the fullest. An individual is the exact image of his home. As young people, what we do on outside premises is the reflection of how we are being raised by our parents. “We should be an extension of our parents’ noble character.” It is mentioned on

“For I know the plans I have for you , declares the Lord, plans to proper you and not to harm you , plans to give you hope and future” Have you ever noticed how often your mind thinks on the past or in the future? Worrying about the future? Regretting the past? Setting goals? Focusing on negative side? Loosing hope and almost want to quit? The world offers plenty of negative things but there is always a spiritual root in every battle of our life. There are many moments in our life that we can’t stop ourselves from thinking, focusing in our flaws, crying, pursuing for something, because we do not know where life can bring us and when we will be successful. Taking life seriously?

If we don’t passed the exam, we are thinking that we cannot pursue our goal, if we failed to submit projects and assignments

worrying about our grades, if we are scolded by our parents we are lazy to go to school to pursue our dreams for them and if we feel hectic and out of control. The problem is, we are becoming aware of our thoughts and actively focusing why things went wrong or how the things can affect us emotionally, physically and spiritually. That’s life, it’s like a wrestling match, we always keep on struggling just to pursue our goal but still we cannot achieve them. We may say we have a certain goal but often take us in another way, and that’s the way of God for the betterment of our future. Life is a precious and wonderful gift from God. Instead of being stressed and focused on what went wrong, enjoy the simple things. Get out of

from him. Ways back then, it is really a serious sin being disrespectful to parents, but in today’s world it might be the same or otherwise. Hence, always recall the Parable of the Prodigal son. Just like the Father above, our parents are forgiving. No parent would put his child in vain. As these realizations would end, just reflect and think of this. Anne Frank had written on her diary, “Parents can only give good advice or put them [children] on the right paths, but final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.” (Diary Entry; July 15, 1944) Youth, remember to be good children to our parents because we only have two of them. Parents wouldn’t be called parents without us — children. They’ve let us see and live in this world. They’re not asking too much from us; just respect, for parents are representations of God’s love.***

Expecting the best through faith a negative mental rut; replace complaints with praise. Ask God to transform our thinking, ask Him to give us strength to overcome all the fears and defeats in every battle of our life. Being in flesh, we couldn’t deny the fact that we are are always up to expectations.

However, there are words in the Bible which says that we should not expect from other people because only God can make it all so. Sometimes, when we are expecting from others, we are also close to the feeling of devastated when we failed from all our expectations. And that’s

the Love Struck authored by Ronald Molmisa, Head Pastor of Generation 3:16 ministries. Discussions there pertains that we should consider and continue to work on the good deeds of our parents. It is badly true that what we do usually mirrors back to our parents. Just imagine we’re into drugs or other illicit things, isn’t that unfair to our parents? If we always take for granted what our parents trying to initiate unto us “don’t do this… don’t do that…” probably, we would find ourselves on the wrong track. In line to that, it is specified in Proverbs 1: 8-9, “Listen my son, to the teaching of your father, do not ignore your mother’s instruction for they will be your graceful crown, a precious chain around your neck.” This pertains that parents are good source of advices and seat of wisdom. They are more experienced than us. They are the representative of God’s guidance because at some point they know things that would happen even

mean nor like. There are also instances that I am outspoken and becoming so candid in my opinions. Yes, I do understand that we are all entitled to express our own views and thoughts. However, we must also keep in mind that in every right we possess, there’s always equal responsibility for us to be restrained. The accounting equation A + L = C reminds me so. The A which stands for assets that we have or the rights we possess, the L as our liabilities or the responsibilities we should also do in return, and when combined together would have C as the capital or how we became as a person, our totality – our personality. In the end, let’s all be careful of what we say either it’s oral or written. The karma never sleeps. It’s always after us. Like what one infomercial said, “Think before you click, think twice before you speak.”***

that they just want the best thing for me. They just want me to understand that they are my parents and they just want the best for me. Freedom is not free, but our parents just wanted the best things for us. They were always there when we commit mistakes when we decided on our own. Remember, our parents are not only deciding for their own needs, they are also prioritizing us even if we don’t think it that way. Indeed, we are lucky to be in a society where freedom is essential and valued; wherein we can express, do or choose. But, freedom will not always as simple as that. My life without freedom would be equal to being controlled in everything. When I don’t have freedom, I can’t do anything unless someone ordered me to do so. But if you try to think it, freedom will not benefit you constantly the good things. It is not always free but good things will arise in return. Freedom requires responsibility to each person for no one will abuse their own freedom. It was one said by Nelson Mandela, “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”***

But still, you have to minimize your expectation, in order for you to lessen or somehow prevent yourself from unnecessary emotional conflicts. As what the Accounting Principle says, “Never assume, unless otherwise stated”. It kind’a makes sense, right? Well, the principle says it all. That even a simple expectation has its own set of rules and principles to study. But at the end of it, the choice depends on you.***

Especially, when you try to post and impress by using English as medium. Let me say this to everybody, people would really be impressed to someone if he/ she expresses himself intelligently not only by using the universal language but also by using his own mother tongue. Thank God, there are sites that can highlight some wrong English or else, RIP Grammar. Had you ever asked yourselves why do these sites still exist and we could log-in and have many accounts we want for free? There is only one reason, we are their products. If you are getting irritated by Youtube’s advertisements and Facebook’s Game requests, they only sell. According to BBC News, social networking sites are uniquely positioned to make money by matching people to products. Since you generate content on a social networking site that indicates your interests, social and work background, and a great deal of other information about your personal preferences, the social networking sites can target advertisements specifically to you, a service for which advertisers are willing to pay significant amounts of money. The most beneficial thing a website can give is that, it simply educates. Google Inc. is the most popular site and so educational at the same time. It gives links to other sites that you may use in order to find specific pieces of information. That’s why students nowadays don’t read and study mostly anymore they just copy-paste. We are losing too much of our privacy not only because of these social- networking sites but because of their popular demand and people’s less information about these websites they are obviously here to stay. Deciding whether to have an account or not is a prerogative. By using it responsibly and encouraging other people to do the same, you can harness the benefits of social networking while avoiding the drawbacks.***

The most common problem of every student is being lazy. They always take exams for granted, due to the fact that the exam is too far to study. What’s the result? They get a lower score or if they’re lucky enough, they get an average score. You must not rely on this. Why not try to open and read your notes before the exam? The sooner you review the better score you can get.

2. List down the pointers to review together with the schedule of the exam.

4. just the two of us feeling

We are all familiar with these Axe deo commercials that whoever smelled its fragrance will get madly, passionately lock in the user’s charms. Infatuation focuses on the physical traits. You had a crush on him/her because he/she has dimples, fair white skin, muscled pack body, sexy, he’s handsome and she’s beautiful or even because he/she can dance gracefully and can reach high notes while singing. We mistakenly claimed that we love that someone but when we figured out something wrong with his/her personality like bad breath, we easily get turned off.

Infatuated people often isolate themselves from others. They tend to lose interest in things that used to motivate them. They focus more on their partners and forget what they used to do before like gimmicks with their friends and family gathering.

5. the-need-you here sickness If love’s not true, it can easily melt away if the two partners experience being away from each other. The foundation of their relationship is not solid because they focus on physical aspects. If they didn’t see, hold or talk to their partner, little by little their feelings vanished until they quit. True love can’t be destroyed by distance. If you do really love each other, you’ll find ways to stay in love with each other no matter how long you can’t be together.

2. the kisap-mata complex Infatuation starts and ends fast. Why? Because infatuated people tend to change their feelings based on their temporary emotions. First, the sparks between his/her crush were too intense. There are stars in their eyes when they see each other. But after a couple of days or weeks, they will end up saying this line: “He/she changed!” the result? Ayawan na! Ayawan na! Ayawan na! Infatuated people tend to abandon their partners when they get bored.

text | Jan Carisse

6. kung-ayaw-mo, huwag-mo problem Relationship of the infatuated people can easily be ruined by small fights. Because of endless lover’s quarrel, their feelings die and can’t be easily exhume by sincere apologies. If one of them wanted to end their relationship, there’s no big deal.

3. The Crazy-for-You Syndrome Infatuation can make a person disorganized, distracted and ineffective. It’s as if you take your own brand of heroin in short--- sabog ka! If you’re under the influence of infatuation you happened to see things in a strange way. You look up in the sky and you will see his/her face there. When you eat, you see his/her smile on your plate. What matters to you is you’re always happy.

7. akin-ka-lang attitude Infatuated persons are the possessive one. Jealous becomes part of the relationship. They get scared that someone or something caught their partner’s attention and pull them away from them.

Yung mag good morning message ka tuwing umaga. Then right after class, dadaan pa kayo sa mallpara gumala at mag-food trip. Haaaaay. Tapos... tapos.... tapos... FRIENDS LANG KAYOOOO?! Huwat?! Aba’y matinde. Ano to lokohan ?! Mabaog na mga paasa!!!

Reviewing the lesson helps your mind to recall every question which may appear on the test. For example, if your past quiz is more on identification then try to apply the stress-free way, list down what could be the possible problem and know the type of examination that your teachers uses.

5. Midnight Memorizing. Memorizing your lessons at midnight is really helpful. Although it’s a little bit odd, why don’t you try? It is true that waking up at the wee hours is difficult especially when you’re having a good time in sleeping but there are good benefits when your mind freshens up and begin to start doing things appropriately. It can also relax your mind and the topic you reviewed will retain in your memory which will help you to have focus. Make sure that you have enough time to sleep and then set your time.

6. Read again before the exam starts.

After a long time of reviewing and memorizing, about 100% of your previous lessons have got into your mind, you are relaxed and free from any distractions. Afterwards, try to read again before the exam starts as well as don’t be nervous to avoid mental block during the examinations. Try not to read on the road because these will make you dizzy, as much as possible eliminate external distractions such as phones and televisions. Internal distractions should also be reduced like fear or worry that makes you rigorous.

Capturing a Perfect Shot Have you ever felt of taking pictures in with its perfect shot? A shot which marked the eye of the viewer? If you’re feeling inspired and motivated, take pictures like a professional and capture its perfect shot. It’s not how you seizure it but it gives you inspiration to take photos with love and care. There’s still plenty of time to perfect your technique and be competitive enough to do your shot properly. Let me give you some tips in creating your photos productively and shoot like an expert. According to RI Staff

One of the greatest problem of the world is poverty, is it right to establish it through tourism or just stop to avoid criticism? Should extend it more or just quit? Most of the people were motivated to travel in different reason, some are just for leisureliness but others travel to observe and experience the situation of being poor. Unfortunate people are widespread along the different parts of the country. However, it began year 1884 called slumming and later on turned to slum tourism. It goes around the South Africa to show whites in the local government on how the population lived. Present day international tours began to visit disadvantage areas mostly known as slums. Last 2008 a British film director produced

Photographer Monika LozinzkaLee, here are some ways to get jump on the competition and be productive in photography. 1. Avoid Clutter People have a tendency to want to have it all, and photography is no exception. You see nice surroundings, people, cool buildings and you get excited and try to fit them all in the frame when you really should be selecting a focal point. That’s the difference between photography and certain other art forms, like painting. When you’re painting you start with an empty canvass.

With its photography, its oppositeit’s a subtraction process. So I always tell people to avoid urge to include everything in your shot. Prioritize then subtract. 2. In matters of Resolution, Aim high If you think you will at any point and want to make prints from your digital photos, be sure to set your camera to the highest resolution. You’ll get fewer images, but they will be of better quality and allow you more freedom if you want to crop or resize your photos. It’s better to start big and reduce your files,

Moreover, aside from a typical tourist or volunteer, we can also consider a media as a slum tourist in which they present the life of ill-starred person and a family it tells about how they did to survive from a tough and consistent situation they faced. Media transmitted it through television or any kind of channel and received by government, then concerned citizens immediately send a help. because you can start small and big. 3. Don’t fight the light Unless you’re trying to for a silhouette, don’t point your camera toward the light. Instead, make sure the light is off to the side or behind you. For example, when you shoot outdoors, don’t aim directly into the sun. 4. Flash Forward New photographers sometimes have the misconception that they should reserve their flash for lowlight situations. But when you photograph people outdoors in bright light, even on the brightest of days, you’re going to end up with deep shadows if you don’t use a flash. The flash evens out the light and helps minimize contrast. 5. Crunch the Numbers Understand the effect of ISO sometimes called ASA on your photos. The ISO (International Standard Organization) number refers to a camera’s light sensitivity. In low light, digital camera will default to ISO. That can create what’s known as digital noise in an image, which can make your photos look grainy. A lower ISO will give you sharper photos, but you have to rely on better light conditions.

6. Find quality in quantity Shoot more than one photo of your subject. This is especially true in the digital era, not only because digital files can become corrupt. If you only took one shot and something goes wrong with technology, all is lost.

“Every

time they will pass that place, they will remember the trees they have planted.”

7. Have Fun Most digital cameras come with a 50-page manual. It can be overwhelming, I recommend that people start by reading just the things they think they’ll use. You don’t need to know everything and you can learn a lot by experimenting.

Learn to experiment with different techniques. 8. Shoot Straight Avoid placing the subjects in the center of the frame. It’s much more visually interesting if you push your subjects to the left or the right and always try to look for interesting angles. 9. Carry a Spare Always carry spare batteries. The same goes with digital cards, you don’t want to caught empty-handed and miss a great shot. 10. Just Smile This should be an easy one. Just be kind and respectful. Remember that not everyone wants to have their picture taken. If you hear no, and it’s definitely no, don’t try to push someone, especially if you’re working in a culture other than your own. Just say thank you and walk away. The best way to communicate is a smile. Do you want to develop your skills in photography? Give yourself a try and take photos better. Probably, it will help you to get your pictures creatively and have some insights on how you shoot like a professional.***

The War Has Begun

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a science-fiction film that gave critical and commercial success. It was released last June 2014 and a sequel of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, it was one of the box-office hit over $189.3 million gross. It showcased the act Mark Bomback, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver with great emotions. The plot revolves around from the collapse of civilization and every country in the world. Desperate leaders Malcolm (Jason Clarke) and Dreyfus (Gary Oldman) debate different strategies for dealing with threats of the apes was the upsurge of the new government of the generation of apes lead by Ceasar (Andy Serkis). Andy Serkis leads the ape rebellion against humans in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, when koba give shoots on Ceasar’s chest which marked as the start of war. It was really like watching a wellevolved ape, an ape riding in a horse with a lethal weapon, hats off Matt Reeves. Although it’s hard to think that apes begin to overpower the human in the film, it was still entertaining. This movie was smart, exciting, and visually brilliant film. A sequel that gave an excellent development of the first film, while also complimenting the entire series in the process. This monkeybusiness will surely lead to Oscars. | Jhene Tuiza

Do you believe in long distance relationship? These song composed and sang by Jireh Lim proved that no matter how far you are with your love one distance didn’t matter most only need to do is trust and always have your communication. Love doesn’t need a distance it’s just a battle between what you feel and what is right. “Dito ay umaga at dyan ay gabi ang oras natin ay magkasalungat aking hapunan ay iyong umagahan ngunit kahit na anong mangyari balang araw ay makakapiling ka” This line showed that the lovers will wait for the right time that they will be together and express their love to each other. It doesn’t matter how long it takes as long as they love each other and fight for the struggles in their relationship. Probably, being in a long distance relationship is hard but if the couples are loyal and always have their communication appropriately distance is not a problem. Love will keep them together no matter how it takes. | Cristina Trinidad

BOOK REVIEWS

Whenever we love someone, we do not consider how long it will take and how long it will last. In other words, time never matters as long as we’re in love. That was proven in the novel The Fault in Our Star written by one of the best-selling and award winning authors, John Green. Actually, it was serendipity when I first discovered the book. I just saw it on one social networking site and the cover got my attention because it’s so attractive. The story is all about the two star-crossed lovers who are cancer patient, but still fighting in the name of love. The female lead character named Hazel Grace Lancaster while the male lead character named Augustus Water. The two never lost faith in love though they both know they have cancer and would die sooner. Hazel and Augustus met at a Support Group where they also met friends who have same case as them. At first, Hazel wasn’t like attending to any Support Group but since her mom asked her, she compulsively attended to it. The story goes with the experience of the two lead characters as Augustus joined Hazel to Asterdam just to see Hazel’s favorite author, Peter Van Houten, the writer of the Imperial Affliction. In the end, a huge turning points of the story happened. Want to know what? Just read the book and you’ll know.

My True Friend

She’s Dating The Gangster

This story gave importance about the real meaning of the word “True Friend”. This Thai masterpiece was one of the most inspiring movies that I’ve ever watched from its solid cast into its striking lines that captured my heart. Every person has their own best friend and as they go on watching this film they can relate their own experience on it. Moreover it tells the viewers to love their friends as much as they love themselves. They must share their affection and take good care of their friendship. “Friends must not leave friends” This was a powerful line which is relevant to the story that catches my attention and inspired me a lot. From the title itself, I know that this will be a good one especially when I notice their identity as a group of fighters. The best part of this movie was when Mario Maurer (Gun), the leader of the group was stabbed by their rivals and died afterwards; realize the significance of a person which is their true friend. “Remember though we are fighters, were not gangsters. Men’s fight until there’s a winner but never to kill.” –Gun. | Banjo Ventolero

“Love does not love the perfectness of a person but it loves an imperfect person perfectly.” –the said quotation marks as you come to hear the melody sung by John Legend. The said song tackled mainly on the heartfelt emotion expressed by a person deeply strung his heart on his loved one. Unlike other songs, this acoustic is more ‘direct’ in expressing such emotions. “Cause all of me loves all of you… Love your curves and all your edges, love your perfect imperfections.” conceptualized the way how true love abounds physical features. Today, most of infatuated being is hooked by the looks, not on the ‘real cook’: the personality. Through this song, these efface the said misconception about love and lust. Love is really a give-and-take turn: you should not give it all and have it none yet you could give some to have some. “Cause’ I give you all…of me, and you give me all…of you” rhythms the mutual sense of commitment. Love will really be fruitful once you’ve learn to take a risk for it, and taking risk out of something exposes how a person is committed enough –not only on the relationship but also on his decision-making about love against all. Love encompasses a lot of failures, a lot of trials and a lot of pain but at the end of the day you should “risk it although it’s hard…” Truly, “All of me” utter how all things work together: with tender-loving-care.

The Religious Beliefs Ilog ng Kabanalan Bundok ng Kahilingan text | Cristina G. Trinidad

K

The Religious Relics

Ping-as at maihahalintulad mo talaga sa isang paraiso. Tinawag itong Mt. Ping-as sapagkat noon ay may nagpiping-as sa krus at sinasabing nagmilagro ito at nagpagaling ng may sakit. Simula Sta. Ping-as.

Our Lady of Sorrows of Turumba”). Dito matatagpuan ang St. Peter of Alcantara Parish na mas kilala sa tawag na Diocesan Shrine of the Our Lady of Turumba, ito ang Pakil’s Roman Catholic Church at tahanan ng Our Lady of Sorrows de Turumba. Nang pumasok kami sa loob nakita ko ang mga Kasaysayan ng Pakil Church, Facade of Parochial Office, Original Painting of Our Lady of Turumba, Retablo of the Turumba Chapel, Retablo-mayor, Façade, Pulpito, Minor retablo with Crucified Christ.

The Blessed Arc

Such an inspiring question to begin with. Yung totoo Par, ilang taon mo pinag-isipan ‘to? One year, five years, ten years? Hahaha! Trip mo ba yung ‘fertility sword’ Par? Watta word di’ba? And lastly, may dalaw din kami monthly. Baka isipin mo pang may pinag-huhugutan ako eh. Mahirap na Parekoy. Hahaha! Next question please!

TANONG: Please! Sana sagutin mo ‘to Mr. Cymark! SAGOT: At last! After that four freaking questions, may humabol pang magandang tanong. Haaaaay. Una, simplicity is the key. As long as kaya mong dalhin ang sarili mo, natu-turn on ako sa’yo. Lastly, nakaka-turn on ang babaeng malambing at malakas ang sense of humor. Yung tipong walang dull moments sa pagitan niyong dalawa. So all in all, di kami natingin sa kung ano ang itsura ng isang babae, though meron pa ring iilan na ginagawa yun, masasabi kong marami pa rin kaming matitino. Hahaha!

text | Maria Kristelle Jimenez

Okay. Okay. Inhale….. Hoooooh….. Exhale…. Bahong hininga! Hahaha! Lapit ka nga dito kaibigan. Halika, lapit ka pang konti. Lapit pa. Ayan, ganyan. Nakikita mo ‘to? Ito oh. Itong Caliber 45 at balisong na hawak ko. Ang tulis ‘no? Parang bagay d’yan sa bandang leeg pababa sa tiyan mo. Hahaha! Ano daw?! As the saying goes, you’ll never know dude!

Hahaha! Biro lang Par. Pero seroyso, may pinag-dadaanan ka ba ngayon? As in broken-hearted ka ba ngayon? Kumbaga sa mathematical problem, masasabing ‘given’ na yung sakit at hirap as isang relationship. Pero kung sa tingin mo ay hindi mo na kaya yung sakit, ‘then let it go, let it go, can’t hold it back anymore’. Uyyyyy, aminin mo Par, kumanta ka ‘no? Hahaha! Hugot pa more! Well, that’s life. Good luck sa’yo Angel! Remember, just love, love and be loved.

Li-Ga ng Kapaligiran is an environmental project of the Extension Services and Linkages Department of the Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Campus. This project is recognized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) through its Regional Director, Dir. Julian Amador last January 2008. It is formulated to build cleaner and greener vicinity inside LSPU system and within the community. “Nap at Kin! Nasaan na kayo?! Hirap na hirap na si Mommy oh! Wala pa si Darla oh! Nagbe-bleeding love na ‘ko eh! Tulong! Nap at Kin! Nap at Kin! Nap, Kiiiiin!” How sad! Hahaha! Whoooooh!

The term ‘Li-Ga ng Kapaligiran’ is derived from the local term ‘linis’ (clean) and ‘ganda’ (beauty) which is the essence of the said project. Through this, the entire LSPU system conducts its environmental-social aids in propagating the pros of maintaining the cleanliness, orderliness and preservation of surrounding in the spirit of service to Motherland and Humanity. This is subordinated into three stages, wherein it is cooperatively done not only by the Li-Ga ng Kapaligiran faculty but also by the entire LSPU system. These are as follows: (1) Construction of plant box along the 0.8 km fence, (2) Annual competition for the Most Beautiful and Cleanest area, and (3) Embarking on Reforestation Activity which is participated by the different colleges. This different colleges such as the College of Teacher Education, College of Industrial Technology, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Computer Science, College of Hospitality Management and Tourism, College of Nursing and Allied Health, College of Engineering and College of Criminal Justice Education work in accordance for the welfare of the biodiversity. It is planted with uniform ornamental plants and landscaped with various stones and crafts with the assistance of the Bureau of Fire Department of the Municipality of Santa Cruz for the painting of walls within the 0.8 km scale. This is made for the prevention of soil erosion since roots of a plant is reliable for the stranglehold of the soil deposits. Also, dilapidation of the fence will be prevented given that the plants will serve as a barricade against the fence’s railing. An annual classroom beautification is also commenced as a part of the Li-Ga’s scheme. The highspirit colleagues would compete for the recognition as the cleanest and greenest field among others. This platform is good in view of the fact that having an eagerness of winning will help in making a stiff action for the sustainability of the hygiene and loveliness of our environment. The cleaning and greening of the designated areas is continued while it is being monitored by the invited Board of Judges regularly until the final evaluation is made. Last year the CIT department thinks out of their box to create a beneficial project by means of

collecting plastic bottles and selling it to generate funds that they can use for school activities. They ask their students to bring ten bottles each so that they can have more bottles than what they can collect inside the university. Now, they are no longer asking the students to contribute money for their fund. The said project is then followed by the CTE department with the same reason. With the help of CTE Student Organization they will be promoting a contest, each class that whoever collects the most number of bottles is the winner and will receive a prize according to the needs of the classroom like an electric fan or so on. Aside from the purpose of generating funds, this project will also help to reduce plastic waste that can harm the environment. It can be more beneficial this way rather than throwing it away or refilling the bottles because it is not advisable to use the bottle for more than

prior recognition of the relentless effort they’ve exerted. For the levitation of the scheme, a reforestation activity is made annually seeing that the Li-Ga’s mission expanded to a more significant activity. Aside on the aforementioned inside-the-campus activity, Li-Ga ng Kapaligiran starts to branch off within the community. The said branching is functional since it widens the ecological awareness of every person of the community. Since climate change is considered as a global obstacle for our ecology, an action should be made for the limitation of the changing milieu. Each college headed by their Dean will organize a tree planting activity to replenish the bare forests. The matter of action could be made by a single faction, yet a half-fraction of dedication and a half-fraction of cooperation will ignite the entire system. Tree Planting: On the last tango Ever since we stepped in school, they have always thought us how to save our very own Planet Earth and continuously develop our community and ourselves as well. We’ve started from recycling papers, bottles,

cans, planting small plants and simply appreciating the beauty of a natural world we breathe in. It’s nice to see that we actually grew in a developing world, where everyone still seeks for freedom. ‘Freedom’ in a sense that there

will be no more worries when it comes to our environment. Many years from now, we are still working on it. The Laguna State Polytechnic University, Sta. Cruz Campus is one of the schools

It is, indeed, a very crucial situation: raging of wind, tremendous flow of water, trees were dancing, and roof of houses are floating. It is tormenting trauma in the mind of every person. Nowadays, we suffer many threatening disaster that made us to build a strong unity in our nation. Each family member helps each other in order to survive in everyday needs like foods, clothes, etc. When there is a disaster, our resources became more limited rather than the ordinary days because of the facilities were been destroyed like fish cages, poultry, etc. in order to this, the government should make an effort to reach a program to help every individual in their critical situations. Hit by the strong typhoon is one of the worst situations that could happen in our life. We can’t stop it, all we need to do is to accept and face it with full

of care in everything, care for structures and care for someone

because we cannot tell the future, there’s so many predictable gest during the typhoon. Showing care for someone is like a stepping stone for them to keep strong and not to give up to the fear that they have in their hearts. Moreover, to be loved during the disaster is the weapon that we can use to keep surviving and still hoping that there is someone waiting for you just to make sure that you are okay even your means of communication are cut-out. They have trust in you that you are safe during the strong rage of the winds. Show your effort to someone you love until you have a time to do something, it’s not final yet to express your affection. Express your love not just that you are hit by the typhoon, express it every time that you have an opportunity and don’t be afraid to be rejected or what else could happen unless you are regretting it in the rearmost.

While watching the segment, I feel some twists of blues and reds on my palette –for I feel sad for knowing the situation of my coFilipino, at the same time I feel the gladness seeing how media helps in giving aids for others. For the last time as a student, Tree Planting is an activity done before they graduate, it is supported by the Department of Natural Resources (DENR). as one of the major pollutant inside Philippine’s ecosystem. In fact, it will take a millennium of decomposing a small plastic bottle. Every day, Filipinos dispose at least 10, 000 bottles and many of it are disposed improperly. Within a year, a line of plastic bottle could encircle the earth four times its circumference. Plastic is considered now as a big ton of waste for a faction of humans, who only do a fraction of help for his ecosystem. Knowing this gives me a heavy heart, for I have been also a factor of the breakage of our ecosystem. Improper disposal of plastic bottles may lead to ozone layer thinning, climate change, soil acidity, land pollution and water pollution. Converting plastic bottles into plastic chairs is a big benefit of recycling a ‘malleable menace’. Plastic chairs are given for public schools that are deficient in some classroom facilities. This is a big help especially for those who aim high for their aspirations. Also, the sales of these plastic bottles are produced into school supplies such as notebook, pencils, and art materials which

Flooded areas, impassable roads, million worth of destructed properties, thousands of casualties affected -- those are just few of the effects brought by different calamities, most especially the typhoon. For many years, Laguna has been regarded as one of the areas that recorded great number of destruction every time a typhoon hits its area of responsibility. While the 2012 Monsoon Floods is one of the major disaster that most Lagunenses will remember a for long time— the heavy rain it bought caused widespread flooding across the southern islands of Luzon particularly the flood-prone areas along Laguna Lake, damaging properties and affecting hundreds of thousands of lives — it also served as a catalyst for the government to create a long-term project that will ease flooding in Laguna.

I now once though that, it is not about the entertainment factor which makes a variety show a hit, whereas the quintessence of it is a far-reaching hands and feet to serve his countrymen. Each and one of us is worth helping for, and showing a prick of patriotism is good enough to show how ‘pliable’ and ‘flexible’ our mind in doing such things. I would end my statement with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “Be a change you want to see in this world.” Together, we could make a life-changing statement. Laguna Lake. Definitely, the project was called the Laguna Lakeshore Expressway Dike which aims to provide highstandard highway that will speed up the traffic between the southern part of Metro Manila and Laguna, as well as a dike that would mitigate flooding in the western coastal communities along Laguna Lake. Although the said project was severely criticized by activist group and some controversy arose about whether or not the dike had indeed been a government priority prior to the 2013 flooding for it was not included as one of structural mitigation measure that year, the project was finally greenlighted for implementation pursuant to the approval

during the June 19, 2014 board meeting. At Php 123 billion this made the above-mentioned project the biggest PublicPrivate Partnership (PPP) project under the Aquino Administration. The construction of the project is expected to start 2015 and end in 2021. The project reportedly, has two components – a 47-kilometer road dike with two (2) sections as follows: Bicutan-Calamba and Calamba-Los Baños; on top of which will be a six-lane expressway and reclamation of 500-700 hectares of raw land and horizontal development of the same mixed use. 20 Move On ? By Harlene Gabrielle

Why is it so hard to move on? Is it because of the pain we feel? Or the person behind the reasons why? To move on is to let go. To step forward and never look back. To be happy without the person you once knew. To forget and leave what’s in the past. But how can I do this? Tell me … How can I move on? If all the roads lead me back to you.

Emotionally Broken Man by Jan Aldous Olviga Viriña

Tears running through my cheeks. Yes! It happened these past few weeks. I can feel the arising coldness. I’m afraid; coz losing you is my extreme weakness. Sometimes I thought, it isn’t right, To love you more and hold on tight. I can sense that I would fall apart, Yet, you are here; within the space in my heart. I’m sorry I am wrong, But when I’m with you I am strong. Even you’re leaving me behind; I can’t resist getting you out of my mind. I can feel in my veins the electricity. Every time you look at me; there’s intensity. I can sense the boldness in my feeling; That my only way to love you is just by showing. Gravity pulls me down to earth naturally. Yet there’s a massive force driving me; To fall for you my sweet baby. But what hurt is; only you could say is “SORRY”.

Look my love unto the moon above And feel the light the way it cast. You’ll be surprised and will be touched, That thought it’s far yet shared its love. And that is what I want to be For two of us long lastingly. We must not learn to forget the love we once had. And let it stay unto our heart. A love that shall never die. Our love that will never lie. My love will only grow longer, For the promise of love last forever.

Ugh.

MAY EXPIRATION. Taga-palakpak.

Football or soccer is the world’s most popular sport; it is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries. It is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball on a rectangular field with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by using any part of the body besides the arms and hands to get the football into the opposing goal. The goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms while it is in play and then only in their penalty area.

The first monument of Jose Rizal as a sportsman was built in Sta. Cruz Sports Complex, Sta. PERSONALITY SKETCH

The Game Maker: Coach Zymoneth Ligoy story

text | Banjo Ventolero photo | Emerson Ranes

A player, a fan and an enthusiast; Neth Ligoy, a thirty year old coach of the College of Engineering women’s volleyball team during the LSPU-Intramurals and LSPU-SCC lady spikers during LSPU Inter-campus. Coach Ligoy is an alumnus of Cavite State University (CavSU) in Indang. She is a former national athlete when she was still playing for her team as a Center Spiker or Middle Blocker. With her five foot six inches height and slender body she definitely has that looks of being a volleyball player before.

Outside the volleyball court, she is a loving wife of Mr. Sherwin Ligoy, also a coach from their Department in football. She also admitted that her boyfriend (before) is the one who inspired him to go here in our university. She may be an athlete and a coach but when it comes to her personal life she always make sure that there is a time for it. From being a national athlete to a national coach, Coach Ligoy, on her three years of coaching the LSPU lady spikers may be considered as one of the finest coaches of today’s generation in CALABARZON. By just having all her learning’s and experiences before, she shared how she came into this kind of business. “Hilig ko talaga ang paglalaro ng volleyball, siguro blessings nadin na isinama ako ng boyfriend ko dito para magturo. Nagkataon namang walang coach ang women’s volleyball team kaya ako na ang kinuha nila para mag coach” an opportunity that she did not refused to grabbed which made her what she is right now. ‘Di ko padin siya tinuturing na competition” pertaining to the question about the competition in Intramurals and Inter-campus against their rivals. She also added that in the world of volleyball she idolize “Wendy Anne Semana, Leila Barros and Mary Jean Balse”, “Wala akong ina-idolize na coach, nagsesearch ako sa internet para makakuha ako ng info. para sa sarili ko at para maituro ko sa mga batang hawak ko”. But as a coach, it is usual for her to experience some hindrances that probably causes the performance of her team nonetheless she considered it as a motivation to perform better in every competition. “Kung titignan niyo yung facilities natin, yung pinag-tetrainingan naming ay ito sakto lang naman pero may support padin ang school” referring to the problems that she encountered in coaching. “Natutulungan din naman, everytime na may competition, lumalabas kami ng campus kapag training for exposure” her words about the support of the university to their team every time the competition was about to start.

not be given concern in the country. Same thing in the university, it cannot be denied that athletes shared this kind of situation. To name a few, it was noticeable of the lack of sporting facilities, equipment for trainings resources for each of them. Evidently, there were inappropriate size and quality of the venue every time Intramurals and LSPU Inter-Campus was being held yearly. Another one was the sports kit which was the basic need of an athlete. It is tough for the sports persons in the country to overcome the expectations of people who support and believe

for this kind of treatment. In some instances, they blamed their supporters although they don’t know the story behind those things. The worse thing could happen possibly, when they were not able to form a team on the particular sports they were supposed to play. All they need is the support for them to improve their skills and for them to sustain their performance well. Guess this is the right time for them to be given concern by for the school, national and international sports for us to boost the quality of sports in the country. Athletes though may be lacking in many aspects, they may not have best quality

a player should were supposed to have; they were still able to achieve, the best thing could ever have; winning. We know that as players, it is a triumph, a victory if they surpass all the struggles

they’ve experienced since the start of their journey. Particularly, we recognize the warriors of LSPU who continuously bring the pride and glory in the regional and national scenes.

Though, lacking for these vital needs, real sportsman victoriously worked hard and continue to play; sh/e cannot be moved, for sports truly runs in his blood. ***

be successful even though they retired or stopped their career as an athlete. Even amateur and campus players do. Some of the Filipino players I know who succeeded after their career in sports were, Benjie Paras who took show business as a career as well as Onyok Velasquez and Efren “Bata” Reyes who also pursued coaching players of billiards; Robert Jaworsky who turned to be a Philippine senator and now a coach; Rudy Hatfield who is now ministering people and such more. See? An athlete can prove that there’s still more in them. Others also venture for businesses so after they retire they would have an investment for the future. See how our Pambansang Kamao, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao spent his reward to invest for the future. You may think that I’ve given much example for professional athletes, but how about those athletes from schools, what comes after they’ve graduated? It’s just simple as this; those athletes who graduated from college and retired from playing were already successful. Do you wonder why? Just think of how they were able to apply and get hired for their desired job because they already have their diplomas. Think how they were able to balance their studying and playing at the

same time. If I would be able to illustrate how one does two things at the same time, you would never understand, lest you do it. Some were doing doubled as that. Some players have their part time jobs while studying and playing. Some have to work for their families while studying and playing and many other cases. But what benefit did they get from playing? Simple, they get scholarship from it because they play for the school. The school

Health Care and Death Benefits Acts of 2011 filed by Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago was not yet a success. Beside all the benefits given by the schools and the government for the athletes and their success in their field after retiring, the memories of friendship and sportsmanship from the people behind their success cannot be paid off and erased from their heart and soul. The memories of loss, hard work, depression, enjoyment, and victory will still remain. Going back to my father’s story, I was indeed inspired by him while I was writing this article. It is because while he was telling it to me, his eyes were glistening. It was like he was replaying the moment when he first touched the spear on the javelin throw. It’s a strange feeling I felt when my father tells something about himself that I could be proud of. In the end, what comes after depends on how an athlete discovers his full potential not only on the sports he had endeavored but how he had felt it as if he was still on the field hitting or jumping and running for victory. It is on how he inspired other people with his own story, the story of his own career on playing because it’s the only thing that would not die in the heart of every athlete.***

What comes after?

Salute to a coach like her, even though she doesn’t have the best things for her team, still, she manages to bring the pride and glory to the university. With her story, it was really proven that in life, if you want to achieve something no one can stop you to pursue such things that you love. It is not a problem if you don’t have the ability because if there’s the will a n d the passion you can get it! You can be like it! ***

From The Pedigree of Baseball Players: text | Cyrile Francia photos | Maan Tengco

Drawn with passion in playing and driven through a sports-oriented family, Mr. John Kenneth Yano Roman, a fifth year BS Electronic and Communication Engineering student urged to make a distinction by representing their athletic crop in playing baseball. Ascents. Throws. Tussles. It’s his last year of playing on the campus field but not on his entire sports career. Though their college team did not make it through the finals of baseball last Intramurals 2014, his spirit after the game was still remarkable. He’s humble and a true-blooded sports man whose able to accept defeat after loss. “Di naman kasi sa pagkatalo nakukuha yan, ang mahalaga experience, at saka manalo man o matalo inaaccept nalang namin kasi part ng laban yun e.” Alongside, he isn’t just an average pitcher on the field. He recently achieved 2nd place on baseball together with his team on the yearly conducted Philippine Athletic State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) and baseball champion on the last year established inter-campus. Baseball. It’s not just an ordinary sport to him. Since elementary, it has been his passion. He tried basketball and other sports but baseball is something different from the others. “Na-welcome ako sa baseball kasi nung nag-try ako ng basketball nung high school, hindi ko naramdaman na na-welcome ako.” He also added that he achieve something on baseball rather than on playing basketball. But he devotes time for basketball even if he’s achieving much for baseball. Evidence to this is his involvement on the yearly conducted barangay LIGAs in Gatid, Sta. Cruz, Laguna where he lives in. Playing these games also served as his bonding with his cousins who were also players of baseball inside the campus. His cousins who were baseball and softball players who also played for our campus were: Lois Samonteza. Kenneth’s friends and supporters yelled so loud when I asked him if he had cousins who were playing for the school and they shouted that all of them were cousins. It’s a different feeling I felt as his friends were very supportive of him. As what he told me, Lois is currently a softball player from the College of Engineering (COE). Lois’ team made it through the finals and became the champion of softball for this year’s Intramurals. He added also that he was so proud of what his cousin has achieved for their department.

“Di naman kasi sa pagkatalo nakukuha yan, ang mahalaga experience, at saka manalo man o matalo inaaccept nalang namin kasi part ng laban yun eh.” Arlene B. Roman. An honest smile had shone on Kenneth’s face when he was telling me stories about his cousin Arlene. It is because Arlene was his inspiration in playing baseball for she was the one who influenced him in playing the game. She was a former softball player in our campus and she also became an umpire in the College of Computer Studies (CCS). At present, she was a fortified player from the Philippine Team. She was indeed a woman whom anyone could look up too and a pride of our school. She was a sports career woman because she never left sports hanging after she graduated from our university. Jason Alon and Wilson Jara. The first year of Kenneth’s playing on the field did not become so hard because he got his cousins on his back. They were his seniors on baseball and they were the ones who taught and inspired him to play the game. Spectacular, isn’t it? They were indeed pure-blooded baseball players playing for the sake of our university. They were the one whom everyone could look up to; especially those players who had their own pack of sports-oriented relatives. Looking back, though Kenneth idolized all his cousins through playing, still there is this one man whom he idolized so much. This man is the one who truly gave him the inspiration to play and to continue the fights of his life. The man I was referring to, is the man who could also play as what he plays, specifically, it is his father, a superintendent in an Electric Company in abroad who work hard just for them to finish their studies. Last year, he had experienced to almost fail on one of his subject because of playing. But because of his father, he is able to stand again. “Para sa mga baguhang manlalaro ipagpatuloy nyo lang ang paglalaro para sa unibersidad, pero wag nyong uunahin ang paglalaro kaysa sa pag-aaral” his advice to those aspiring players who wanted to prioritize playing than studying. Without a doubt, an athlete like him is one of a kind. He is one of the best players in the College of Engineering. Furthermore, their family which has a lineage of baseball players was indeed an asset for our university and a pride that only LSPU had.*** THE GEARS - THE OFFICIAL STUDENT PUBLICATION OF LAGUNA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY - STA. Off the Block Hit it through the block! It symbolized the student and professional athletes that beyond every problem, deficiency and lack of support, they were still able to stand and bring home recognition. The usual scenario for every Filipino athlete competing not only for themselves but also for the team they represent, still, cannot manage to get their needs. A problem in the world of sports was passed from generations to generation through the athletes. A problem that was probably adapted off from the legendary athletes to this generation’s set of athletes. This could be problem that may be hard to resolve if sports would

On the recently concluded Intramurals 2014, her team finished as the second placer in women’s volleyball game. As a coach, she is definitely one of the finest as she was considered also by her players as their mother inside and outside the court. Coaching is a hard thing to do but for coach Ligoy it is her passion, passion when it comes to the sport she loves and passion when it comes to the things that she adopted to be with. When she was in the hard court, you can see her willingness not only to train her players and her entire team but also her eagerness and presence in each games to show her players what winning does mean for her. Proving to this is her achievements in terms of coaching. She, together with the LSPU-bomberinas has won the gold medal in State Colleges and University Athletic Association (SCUAA) National Level last 2012 in Zamboanga. They also prevail in regional level of SCUAA held in Batangas City last year, 2013.

My father used to be an athlete when he was studying. It was a lucky throw of spear that made him bang into distinction and recognition. While watching senior javelin throwers from afar, my father gets interested with the sport and without undue hesitation, he dashed off; finally, he threw the spear with all his might. He had just thrown the spear far away from his senior’s javelin spear despite of his insufficient knowledge about the sport’s techniques and strategies. From this scene, the coach immediately eyed for this small man in place of the veteran players and became the youngest of his batch in the provincial meet to compete against other

of his college contenders. After that spectacle, maybe you were asking me now if my father became a professional javelin thrower. My answer was ‘no’. He did not. For most of the athletes inside the campus, only some of them pursue the career of being a professional athlete. As a student journalist, I came to realized how fast career on sports fades just like castle sand in the sea shore. After it was built with hard work, patience and practice, will it just fade away and tarnish? What will happen to those striving athletes after college? Where will they used their talents on playing, if there’s no more competition? What comes after? As I was surfing the

internet about the professional athletes who retired from playing the sports they’ve endeavored, I saw how some of the netizens associated them with the word ‘depressed’, depressed individuals who cannot do anything than to play. They’ve trained very hard, work for outstanding stamina, run for endurance and break a leg for success but profit for none in the future. Because, once they graduated from their career, they died. It was once said that players die twice. First is when they retire from playing and the other is dying itself – you know literally what dying is. But I cannot comprehend to this allege. Some professional players continued to

There are numerous sports which became popular here in the Philippines, Volleyball, badminton, tennis, and soccer are some of it. But I don’t know how to play any of these. I don’t play any sports. Maybe some of you were thinking that this is weird but I am an exception. I know the rules of some sports, but I cannot play it. I am contented on just watching and staring at the players during the game and sitting on one side. I accepted that I’m not born to play. There are people saying, “You should know how to play at least one sport because it is good for your health” and sometimes “You don’t get anything by just watching”. I prefer not to respond because I know sports are good for our health but who told that there is no benefit in just watching? With the goal to entertain ourselves, support our favorite team, remove stress and have fun with friends or family, we get several benefits. The question is, how could it happen if I was just watching? There are benefits in our physical health. According to the research, 70 kilo grams can burn over 100 calories. I guess you are wondering how and why. In fact, while watching basketball or soccer match, I am not just sitting obtusely as most sports fans do. I do sitting, standing, screaming and waving my hands to give

encouragement. I feel that I am part of the playing team whom I support. I clap and shout even if they didn’t notice me. Sweats are flowing out on my face and body. But, how about those who cannot attend live games but rather prepare to just watch it in television. Don’t worry because I could imagine how you scream, jump, clap and say ‘yes!’ if there

brain. One proof is I receive information, I can remember it. To tell you the truth, even one week after the game, I still remember how the game was played, the flow of the game, who won the game, which lose, in what score and what strategies were done by the players to defeat their opponent. Watching sports does not only about understand the game better, but while watching, I experienced different brain activity in motor areas which is related to planning, monitoring and performance. These also help me to absorb and digest information that I’ve got. Watching sports is good for relationship, in particular, our social and emotional. As I watch sports with my classmates and friends, I am more likely to have better communication skills. I sit through the game and cheer or groan along with the others. It is also good for the couples to watch sports games because couples who share common interest live longer lives. They are healthier in most aspect of life, including cardio vascular and neurological system, because they experience lesser stress than couples who are completely opposite. I, as a student journalist, who watches and writes sports news needs to watch every unfamiliar game so that I could make news easily. It also gives

“Now,

I’m still watching, but I'm not just watching on one side.” are points for your favorite team in front of the monitor even if some says, “you look crazy”. In, fact, people who watch sports even in television increases their heart and breathing rate because of the activities they’re doing on their place and the traffic nerve impulses to their nerve also increases. Sports also have benefits in our mental health. Watching sports games can improve the ability to communicate and help you to stay organize. Watching can be an exercise for the

is just like a mother rewarding her children after they had given something for their mother to be proud off, even if it’s just a simple kiss. The players were not left for nothing. All those hardships from practicing and competing have rewards. Even professional players do. The Republic Act 9064 or the Sports Benefits and Incentive Act of 2001 were a great help for the professional athletes. However, an additional benefit for them like the Senate Bill 2741 or the Professional Filipino Athletes Retirement

Not just sitting me information on what should to write and not to write on my article. It gives me an idea of how a particular sport is being played and I can easily understand the mechanics of the game. It helps me to visualize the written sports news that had happened even if I don’t watch it because I am familiar with the words used. I can give an idea on how the team won and lose because I encounter lots of sports game. Lastly, watching sports tests my flexibility to watch and write different sports that I don’t even play. Watching is not a just. I learned from what I’ve already watched. I improved from this. I became healthy in physical,

mental, social and emotional through this. I am not telling this for you not to play sports and just watch alone. I am telling this for the sake of those who can’t play any sports and to those who don’t have enough time to play any sports. Watching sports makes you healthy, but playing is better than watching. Yes, I admit it, but I enjoy watching than playing. I salute to those sports fans that go abroad just to watch Pacquiao, who shout for NBA tournament, for those who spend money to buy tickets for the game and for those who spend their spare time even though they are busy in study and work. They sit, stand, jump, cheer, and scream just to show support for

their team. But, did those players ever appreciate it? It’s obviously not. A team needs someone to watch over them playing and the same goes to the sports fans and watchers, they need something to watch over. Players, especially, underdogs, need their fans to motivate them to get the crown and the watchers also need players to motivate them in moving and exercising. Now, I’m still watching but I’m not just watching on one side. I watch to be healthy, to support my favorite team and to get strategies from them because it’s my vision to play and try sports.***
