PEOPLE IN Electric STATE NEED NOT circuit found on WORRY: ASHOK 1 dead Bangalore Beat Bureau

An injured victim of blast being rushed to a hospital in Mumbai yesterday. Union home minister P Chidambaram today said there was no intelligence on the blasts, but added it should not be construed as a failure of a particular organisation.

ʻSERIAL BLASTS NOT TRIGGERED BY TIMER DEVICESʼ Mumbai: At least 17 people died in the coordinated terror attacks in Mumbai last evening, Union home minister P Chidambaram said today, asking people not to speculate on those responsible behind it. He also admitted that there were no intelligence inputs about the triple blasts. He said 131 people had been taken to 13 hospitals with injuries – of which 26

were discharged, 82 were stable and 23 were serious. He said one severed head was also found at the site, which could take the death toll to 18. “There was no intelligence input to central or state intel agency regarding yesterday’s blast – it was unfortunate,” Chidambaram said at a press conference here after visiting the blast sites with Ma-

harashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan. “I request you all, do not speculate. I advise the Maharashtra government not to proceed with pre-suppositions or assumptions,” the home minister said, adding that the people of Mumbai had responded “splendidly”. According to Chidambaram, the sites had now been cordoned off and the

state and central-level teams would continue to work to determine the nature of the explosives. “But it was not a remote trigger blast.” “Ammonium nitrate was used with a timer. The fact that they all took place within minutes of each other – eight to 10 minutes – shows that it was a coordinated terror attack,” he said. Continued on page 4

Govt wonʼt acquire land for Posco: CM Bangalore Beat Bureau

Bangalore: The government will not acquire lands for the Posco steel plant in Gadag district, even if farmers come forwards, said chief minister B S Yeddyurappa here this morning. The government has given up the process of acquiring 5,724 acres of land for the Posco project in the area following protests from Tontadharya Math seer Siddalinga swamiji and Udupi Pejawar Math seer Vishvesha Teertha Swamiji, he said. “If the farmers do not want to give the land for the project, it is OK. We will look for dry lands somewhere else, where the farmers are willing to let go of their lands,” he said. “There is supposed to be two groups, one of them willing to give the land. But the government does not want to take it,” he said. “I have already asked district-level officials across the state to identify lands for the project,” he added.

Many math heads, headed by Thontadarya Math seer Siddalinga Swamiji, today held a meeting and asked the government to give the proposal to drop the project in writing. They alleged that Posco is a blacklisted company.

Mumbai: An electric circuit has been found on one of the bodies recovered after the serial bombings, a top doctor at the J J Hospital said here today. This has given rise to the theory that the blasts, are one of the blasts, could have been triggered by a suicide bomber. The information has been shared with authorities, hospital dean T P Lahane said. The electric circuit, which may have been used to trigger one of the blasts, was found outside the victim's body. At least 17 people were killed and 131 injured in the triple blasts that rocked the city last evening. J J Hospital is one of the 13 hospitals where the victims of the blast were rushed to. Union home minister P Chidambaram too has denied that timer devices would have been used in the serial blasts that rocked the commercial capital.

Bangalore: The main accused in the Miss Karavali MMS scandal has been arrested. Ashwath Gaonkar, who was hiding in Hubli, was picked up by the Bangalore cyberpolice and was brought to the city last night. He was produced before the first additional chief metropolitan magistrate, who remanded to custody today. The cyberpolice said that they have proof of Aswath uploading the

MMS from his home computer. Ashwath uploaded video clips of him and the victim, Lavanya R Naik, having sex on December 28, 2010. In 2009, he had had even sent her obscene photographs. Her parents approached then Karwar SP Raman, who warned Ashwath and let him off. In 2010, he asked Lavanya to marry him. But when she refused, he uploaded the MMS clip on the social websites. It is said Lavanya shifted to Bangalore to avoid embarrassment.

Bangalore: The state government has declared a high alert in the wake of last night’s terror attacks in Mumbai, and security has been increased along coastal and border areas, said home minister R Ashok here this morning. The police are checking all the vehicles coming into the state. The security has also been increased at the Bangalore International Airport and all those who arriving in the city are being thoroughly checked, he added. People in the state should not worry as the government has take enough security measures to prevent any terror attacks, he said. A tight police bandobast has been arranged in areas close to the border, like Hubli-Dharwad, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Belgaum and other sensitives areas, he added.

A high alert has been sounded in Bangalore too, and all the sensitive installations are being guarded, he said. Security has been increased at Vidhana Soudha, Karnataka High Court and other places. Terming serial blasts as a heinous act, he said, “Those who cannot face society have resorted to such attacks. Such acts are not fit for a civil society.” The chief minister this morning said he had called for a high-level meeting of all top officials and home minister R Ashok to discuss security preparedness of the state’s forces.

THE MAYA OF MONEY

M

oney gives one a sense of freedom and ownership. Ownership of something means total control of its existence. When we buy a piece of land, we feel that we own it, although the land continues to exist even after the owner is no more. How can we own something that outlives us? Money also gives the idea that we are powerful and independent, blinding us to the fact that we live in a world of interdependence. We believe that with money we can own anything, that we can put a price tag on anybody’s services. We depend on farmers, cooks, drivers and the services of so many people around us. Even an expert surgeon cannot operate by himself. He depends on others. By paying a few currency notes, we overlook the fact that we depend on them. Instead of feeling grateful we think it is we

Sugarcane farmers want factories to clear dues Bangalore: Sugarcane farmers from southern parts of the state gathered for a one-day interactive session yesterday and pressed for payments due from sugar factories. They also wanted better price for their produce. Members of the State Sugarcane Growers’ Association of Mysore will discuss with agriculture and horticulture minister A Ravindranath issues of pricing for the next year. They will also hold discussions with Govinda Reddy, secretary, South Indian Sugar Mills’ Association (SISMA). Those who attended yesterday’s session said that the state stood third in the production of sugarcane in the country, after Maharashtra and Punjab. Last year, the state recorded 336 lakh tonnes of sugarcane. The farmers, who had gathered at Legislators’ Home, wanted the state government to make its stand clear on the pricing. They said for every tonne of production of sugarcane they incur a cost of Rs 2,249.57. If grown properly, they can produce 35 to 40 tonnes per acre. Govinda Reddy said, “While we know that sugar farmers are at a disadvantageous position on the pricing front. Last year, farmers got Rs 1,800 per tonne. This year, we have discussed it with ISMA where some farmer representatives, like Kodihalli Cahndrashekar of Mysore, Puttanna Gowda of Mandya and Byatranahalli Madappa were present. This session has been constructive and any differences will be settled at another session that will be held in the city on July 16.” He said sugar prices had reached Rs 35 per kg, but came down to Rs 27. “Despite these variations, we would see that farmers get the right price. Last year, the government allowed export of 46-50 lakh tonnes of sugar. But this year, it will go slow,” he added. Sugarcane Growers’ Association representatives said, “Production was good all over the country last year, including the state. Maharashtra and Punjab too recorded a 10 percent increase. Though it is a good sign, the farmers had to go through harrowing times, because of reduced procurement price. We will discuss the issue with state and central governments.”

who oblige them. If we take a look at why most people with money are arrogant we will find it is because of the feeling of independence that money brings. The awareness of dependence on the other hand makes one humble. The basic human quality of humility is taken away by the false feeling of independence. Human values have eroded to such an extent that we measure people in terms of their net money worth. Can money really reflect the worth of a person? Often we call someone a millionaire or a billionaire. Labeling a person so is not a compliment. We cannot put a value to human life. Wealth can be attained through one's skills, abilities, inheritance or through corrupt means. The means of attaining wealth brings its own consequences. The very motive for cor-

ruption is peace and happiness. Yet peace and happiness remain elusive when the means are corrupt. On one hand, some people blame money for all the ills in society. There are others who even consider it an evil. Just as possessing money brings arrogance, rejecting it too makes one arrogant. Some people who renounce money take pride in their poverty to draw attention and sympathy. However, the ancient sages never denigrated money. In fact, they honoured it as a part of the divine and transcended the grip of its illusion. They knew that when we reject or hate something, we can never transcend it. They honoured wealth as Goddess Lakshmi – the consort of Narayana. In a state of ignorance, people forget that the most reliable thing in the universe is ourselves and therefore start relying on money as a source of security. When people lack faith in the Di-

vine or in their own abilities or in the goodness of society, they suffer from a deep sense of insecurity. This is a predominant problem today. As a result all that appears to provide security is money. They rely on something that is not certain, and end up getting upset. Uncertainty causes craving for stability. The world is of change; the Self is of non-change. We have to rely on the non-change and accept the change. This is like perceiving the real as unreal and unreal as real. In fact, all miseries are unreal. A wise man knows that happiness is real, as it is our very nature. Unhappiness is unreal because it is inflicted by memory. When we see everything as a dream, then we abide in our true nature which is love, joy and peace. Then we understand that money is not all important. There are values, belongingness, love and care which are more important.

wants better control ʻCosmetics units too must be under purviewʼ L Raghunanda Bangalore Beat Bureau

Bangalore: Some 110 units manufacturing cosmetics in the state have to be brought under the purview Karnataka Drug Control Authority, said state drug controller Dr Jagashetty. Over the next two weeks, the government and the authority would decide on a number of laws and amendments that would bring better control over selling and manufacturing of drugs in the state, he said. “The talks are already on.” He hoped two drug examining centres at Hubli and Dharwad, whose construction is going on, would be completed soon. Frequent media reports about spurious drugs and cosmetics are disturbing. “This is because of noncompliance of cosmetic and drug manufacturing industries with the rules in the state. We want to see where we get powers to regulate noncompliance of both cosmetic industries and spurious drug manufacturers. We want to train drug examiners and drug control officers in our department to deal with these cases effectively,” he added. The amendments should be taken up under Form 13 of the Drug Control Act. This means, the authority should be given powers to declare a drug spurious

While there are laws to govern drugs at doctor’s shops and clinics, the authority should be given powers to issue periodic licences to them. “We should also be allowed to examine the samples with these doctors and clinics,” he added.

DAY AFTER: MUMBAIKARS

S Radhakrishna

VENTURE OUT BOLDLY

Mumbai: A day after three three blasts rocked India’s financial and entertainment hub, Mumbaikars with their unshakable spirit ventured out of their homes and resumed their daily chores today. Last evening, at least 17 people were killed and 131 injured as three blasts ripped through Dadar in central Mumbai and Zaveri Bazaar and Opera House in south Mumbai, making it the worst terror attack

since the 26/11 savagery. The city’s lifeline – the Western Railway, Central Railway and the BEST buses – had the usual crowds of office-goers this morning. “Today, on account of very heavy rains in the city and Thane, a few people decided to stay put at home, but a majority are out as usual,” Kiran S V, an executive who works in Worli, barely 3 km from the scene of blast in Dadar,

said. A resident of Mira Road suburb of Thane, she said even her two children went to school “as usual” and everything appeared to be like any other day. Archana Shukla, who works in south Mumbai, said she “never even expected” suburban trains to run empty today. “I am a Mumbaikar and we shall not be scared by these terror attacks. Like me, lakhs of co-com-

muters are in the trains, buses and roads. It actually gives strength to each other,” Archana said. Mehul Shah, a tax consultant from Malad, said he started 15 minutes early for his office, anticipating delays on account of the rains and was happy to notice that thousands of other commuters had also started early for work. Similarly, schools, colleges, shops and commercial establish-

ments were open and working as usual all over the city and suburbs. Meanwhile, train services on the Central Railway were disrupted this morning due to heavy rains since last night. A railway official said that there was waterlogging on the tracks between Thane-Kalwe stations, leading to delays and disruption in services. IANS

stopped: Rahul Gandhi

Bhubaneswar: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi today said 99 percent of the terror attacks had been stopped in the country, thanks to various measures, including improved intelligence. Addressing a press conference here, a day after serial bombings in Mumbai, the Con-

gress MP called for efforts to stop terrorist attacks in the country. “It is very difficult to stop any single terrorist attack,” he said, adding that 99 percent of the attacks have been stopped. “We must stop 100 percent attack.” Referring to Wednesday’s attack, Gandhi said the response

of the government was prompt. “We are responding to it in a quite organised fashion.” Gandhi, the son of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, is on a two-day visit to Orissa beginning Wednesday to streng then the grassroots base of the party. IANS

Pune: Three blasts that rocked Mumbai once again made Punekars shudder with memories of February 13 terrorist attack on the German Bakery last year, that killed 17 persons including some foreigners and injuring over 50. Even as the city was put on a very high alert since last night, after the blasts, with thick security blanket covering all sensitive places identified after the German Bakery blast, the numerical connotation of date “13” too has emerged as a mysterious angle to the latest terror strike on the country’s commercial capital. ATS sources noted that in addition to the Pune blast, many other earlier terror attacks including the ones in Delhi and Jaipur had taken place on the day when the date was 13. A source said it appeared that the attacks with suspected Indian Mujaheedin (IM) connections had coincided with date “13”. After the February 13 on the German Bakery, the Koregaon park area which also houses the Jewish centre – “Chhabad House” is notified as a sensitive zone on the terrorists’ radar. PTI

Teachers to protest on July 16 Bangalore Beat Bureau Mysore: Physical training education teachers have demanded implementation of L R Vidhyanathan report on cadre and recruitment rules for physical instructors. Addressing the media this morning N C Umesh president of Physical Instructors Form said rules should be reframed for physical education teachers and those who have served more than 15 years should be designated as assistant masters. Their other demands include reintroduction of physical education text books to 5th standard to 9th standard which was stopped in 2009, deputation to study BPD and MPD and the government to pay the fee for the same, those who have done MPD should be deputed to junior colleges, recruitment of new teachers by government, unaided school training teachers should get fixed salaries.Umesh said on July 16 they will observe a silent march from Gandhi Square to DC office in which over 800 to 1000 teachers are expected to participate. A protest march will be held at Freedom Park, Bangalore on July 28 in which teachers from all over the state will participate, he said.

the court. The matter has to be decided in the court itself and not by Yeddyurappa, he said. In fact the governor is fully satisfied with the corruption charges against the chief minister and after fully scrutinizing the documents he has accorded sanction to prosecute the chief minister, Siddaramaiah said. Let the courts decide whether the chief minister is involved or not in corruption. Instead why

the chief minister is questioning the governor’s power to prosecute him and file writ petition in the high court praying to quash the governor’s order on prosecution, he said. Mysore: Plastic Surgeons of India in association with Vikram Hospital is celebrating world plastic surgery day on July 15. Addressing the media this morning eminent plastic surgeon Dr Narayan Hegde said plastic surgery is an art of modeling. India is credited to have invented plastic surgery as early as 600 BC. Ancient Ayurvedic practioner Shrushruta is believed to be the first to practice plastic surgery, he said. During the last 50 years there is a significant change in plastic surgery methodologies Dr Hedge said. In India there is 2100 plastic

surgeons which corresponds to 1 plastic surgeon for 6 lakh people. While in the US 1 plastic surgeon is available for 1600 people. “We need to have a relook at this wide gulf and find ways and means to bridge the gap,” he said. In Mysore an average 3000 to 3500 plastic surgeries were performed every year and in order to create awareness among the people, the plastic surgery day will be celebrated on July 15, he said. Dr B N Jairam, senior plastic surgeon of Vikram Hospital, Dr Mohan of K R Hospital, Dr Satish and Dr Ravi H S were present on the occasion.

The home minister also sought to clarify that absence of intelligence inputs did not necessarily mean a failure of the concerned agencies. “When there is no intelligence on particular agency, it doesn’t mean a failure of the agency. There was no intelligence on an imminent attack, but it’s not failure. In the nature of things, whoever prepared the attack, worked in a clandestine manner,” he said. “Maybe, it was a small group. Intelligence is covered every day and every hour,” he said. “This incident comes after 31 months,” he said, referring to the previous blast in the state on November 11, 2008. “In between, there was one terror attack in Pune. In a

sense, the Mumbai police have developed a lot of capacity to deal with terror threats and successfully foiled a large number of terror threats.” Among the three blasts, all in south to central Mumbai, he described the one at Dadar as a lowintensity one, and said the other two at Zaveri Bazaar and Opera House were of medium to high intensity. Asked if the terror attacks were aimed at destabilising activity in the city and the country as a whole, Chidambaram replied: “I don’t consider it as an attack on India’s commercial capital. It is deeply regrettable. But India will continue to grow and prosper.” He also said the investigators would also keep in mind whether the blasts were aimed at destabilising talks with Pakistan. “Indo-Pakistan talks are on a few days That angle will also be kept in mind.” IANS

SC reserves orders on Kerala temple

Pradeep Kumar is new

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today reserved its interim orders on the question of permitting inventory, videography and providing fool proof security to the estimated over Rs 1.50 lakh crore wealth unearthed from chambers of the famed Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala. A bench of justices R V Raveendran and A K Patnaik felt that the massive wealth was perhaps at a “risk” in view of the wide spread publicity given about it in the media. The apex court took on record the affidavit filed by the state government and various other parties giving their suggestions for proper maintenance and upkeep of the temple. Significantly, the Kerala government asserted that the entire wealth found at the shrine be longed exclusively to the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and nobody can lay claim on it. The state government said that it has put in place a security apparatus with an additional director general of police-rank officer monitoring the situation through a 24-hour control room set up for the purpose. It was spending Rs 1 crore on security measures every month. IANS

Pet owners are happier, healthier

Washington: Even people who aren’t struggling with illness can benefit from the emotional support provided by pets, said a study. Researchers also found evidence to dispel the notion people’s relationships with their pets come at the cost of their ties with other humans, according to the study published online by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. “We observed evidence that pet owners fared better, both in terms of well-being outcomes and individual differences, than non-owners on several dimensions,” study co-author Allen McConnell, of Miami University in Ohio, said in a statement. “Specifically, pet owners had greater self-esteem, were more physically fit, tended to be less lonely, were more conscientious, were more extroverted, tended to be less fearful and tended to be less preoccupied than non-owners,” the researcher said. Researchers studied three different groups, the largest of which comprised 217 people, both pet owners and non-owners. The group was 79 percent female, with a median age of 31 and median household income of $77,000 a year. “The present work presents considerable evidence that pets benefit the lives of their owners, both psychologically and physically, by serving as an important source of social support”, the study says, noting that previous research had “focused primarily on pet owners facing significant health challenges”. re you feeling numbness in hand? Have you met with an accident in recent past injuring your hand? Do you feel nagging pain in your wrist with repeated and unending tapping on computer keyboard? The answer to all these questions lies in visiting a good hand care doctor for specialised treatment. Just to treat such cases, exclusively related to hands, a specialty hospital was opened – Bangalore Hand Care Hospital – last week. Founder-proprietor of the hospital, Dr Bharat K Kadadi, says, “Though there are many orthopaedic hospitals, I felt the city needed an exclusive hospital to deal with hand-related injuries and diseases one might frequent.” Dr Bharat K Kadadi, who is a wellknown orthopaedic surgeon, and his wife Dr Maya KT have started the hospital. Dr Kadadi has worked at various leading hospitals in the city, including Suguna and Hosmat, for more than six years now. He is a consulting surgeon at various hospitals in Chennai and Coimbatore. He is specially trained in brachial plexus and related hand injuries at Yamagachi Medical University in Tokyo. “Brachial plexus is numbness of hands and fingers. Patients, who would have suffered hand injury, experience numbness of the hand and fingers. They normally ignore it and go through ordinary treatment. But there could be more serious injury and a patient has to go through specialised treatment if the pain persists. These cases need surgery and one can find relief only after the procedure. It does not take much time to perform the operation and a patient can go home within six hours of surgery.” When Bangalore Beat asked Dr Kadadi on cases related to hand injury which he has operated upon and the common injuries that are surfacing these days, he said, “Nowadays, many people in the city suffer from computer related and stress inflicted disease, like carpal tunnel syndrome, because of the constant use of computers without caring for the hand and body.” “But most of the patients I have treated are those with disfigured hands due to nerve damage. We can treat such patients even if half the hand is lost. If there are donors, it is possible to join the new hand within six hours,” Dr Kadadi said. “The task is not easy and the procedure is complicated. But we can see that everything is fine depending on the donors and how the recipient’s body accepts the organ.”

People drawn to individuals in a similar league London: It’s said that opposites attract when it comes to love. But, a new study has found that more often partners are drawn to individuals who have personality traits much similar to that of their own. Researchers at University of California, Berkeley found that people are attracted to potential romantic partners if they are of their own or similar league and desirability, which they called the “matching hypothesis”, the Daily Mail reported. For their research, the authors of the study turned to online dating sites and measured the popularity of more than 3,000 heterosexual users of a site. Popularity was defined by the number of opposite-sex individuals who had sent unsolicited messages to a user. Analyses indicated that high-popularity users contacted other popular users at a rate greater than would be expected by chance. Similarly, the less popular users of the site also contacted other low-popularity users. The researchers then conducted a follow-up study of more than a million users and found a similar result – when it comes to dating, potential mates stick to someone in their own league. “Individuals on the dating market will assess their own self-worth and select partners whose social desirability approximately equals their own,” the authors wrote. Using data collected in the laboratory and from users of a popular online dating site, the authors found evidence for matching based on selfworth, physical attractiveness, and popularity, but to different degrees and not always at the same stage of the dating process. “The most striking prediction is that undesirable individuals will choose undesirable partners,” they added. Paris: Scientists offered a slender piece of good news about global warming, reporting that cities can be of surprising help in soaking up carbon dioxide (CO2), the principal greenhouse gas. Around 4 percent of the world’s land surface is defined as urbanised, a figure expected to surge as the planet’s human population rises from seven billion this year to as much as 9.5 billion by mid-century. But unlike forests, urban areas are absent in most calculations of “sinks” where vegetation soaks up CO2 naturally thanks to photosynthesis. A new study, though, says the contribution can be significant. British scientists carried out their survey on the central English city of Leicester, which has a population of around 300,000 living in an area of 73 sqkm. They measured the carbon-absorbing capacity of its parks, domestic gardens, abandoned industrial land, golf courses, school playing fields, road verges and river banks. They found that 231,000 tonnes of carbon were locked up this way, 10 times more than expected. It is roughly equal to the average annual emissions of more than 150,000 saloon, also called sedan, cars. “Currently, once land in the UK is considered to be urban, its biological carbon

density is assumed to be zero,” said researcher Zoe Davies of the University of Kent, southeast England. “Our study illustrates this is not the case and that there is a substantial pool of carbon locked away in the vegetation within a city.” Urban “sinks” are not by themselves a solution to the billions of tonnes of carbon emitted globally but can help mitigate their impact, especially if gardeners grow trees, which absorb far more CO2 than grass and shrubs, she said. In the case of Leicester, most of the publicly-owned or -managed land in the city comprises lawns. But if just 10 percent of this land were planted with trees, the city’s car-

bon storage would leap by 12 percent. “If more trees are planted in urban areas for their carbon storage value, they must be the right kind of tree planted in the right place so that they have a long, productive lifespan, and when trees die they should be replaced,” Davies cautioned. Trees have an additional benefit of lowering the temperature locally, providing shade. In contrast, asphalt roads and buildings store solar radiation during the day, encouraging the creation of “urban heat islands” that can add dangerously to the effect of heatwaves on human health. The new study appears in the Journal of Applied Ecology, published by the British Ecological Society. AFP

Children exposed to passive smoke prone to neurotic problems Boston: Children who grow up exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to suffer from neurobehavioural disorders like learning disabilities, lack of concentration and hyperactivity, according to a new study by Harvard researchers. Researchers, led by the Harvard School of Public Health, have found that children who grow up among parents or family members who smoke, are 50 per cent more likely of having at least two of the three disorders, namely a learning disability, behavioural or conduct problem and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Among kids who lived with a smoker, 20.4 per cent or one in five had been diagnosed with at least one neurobehavioural condition. The study revealed that boys are at a higher risk than girls of getting these disorders. The researchers believed that such disabilities could be prevented if children are not exposed to active or passive smoke. Of the sample size of 55,000 children under the age of 12 being surveyed, about six per cent were exposed to passive smoke, corresponding to about 4.8 million children nationwide. Older children, especially those aged 9

to 11 years, and those living in households with the highest poverty levels were also at greater risks in developing these disorders. ADHD is a long-term, chronic condition. If it is not treated appropriately, ADHD may lead to drug and alcohol abuse among children. A child with neurotic disorder is likely to fail to give close attention to details or tends to makes careless mistakes at school work. A child is likely to develop poor listening skills, lack of concentration, become forgetful, easily distracted, fidgety, talkative and impatient. PTI

Your brain has moral hold on you Washington: Unbeknownst to you, your brain might have a hidden agenda – discouraging you to stray from the narrow path to rectitude. It does so by simulating physical sensations to prompt introspection, capitalising on moments when your emotions might be intense. Mary Helen Immordino of the University of Southern California (USC) Brain and Creativity Institute, found that individuals who were told stories to evoke compassion and admiration for virtue, sometimes reported that they felt a physical sensation in

response. These psycho-physical “pangs” of emotion are very real – they can be ascertained with brain scans – and may be evidence that pro-social behaviour is part of human survival, reports the journal Emotion Review. Immordino’s hypothesis is that the feeling or emotional reactions in the body may sometimes prompt introspection. They can ultimately promote moral choices and motivation to help or emulate others, according to a Southern California statement.

“These emotions are foundational for morality and social learning. They have the power to change the course of your very life,” Immordino said. In one instance, a participant responded to a story of a little boy’s selflessness toward his mother by reporting that he felt like there was a “balloon or something under my sternum, inflating and moving up and out.” While pondering this physical sensation, the participant paused for a moment and considered his own relationship with his parents.

Ultimately, he voiced a promise to express more gratitude toward them. Researchers noted similar reactions in varying degrees in other participants’ tests. Immordino’s team has performed about 50 of these qualitative analyses in Beijing and at USC. She said: “We are an intensely social species. Our very biology is a social one.” “For centuries poets have described socalled gut feelings during social emotions. Now we are uncovering the biological evidence,” she added. IANS

I Will go ahead with India visit: Hillary, post Mumbai

Washington: Hours after the Mumbai blasts, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton made it clear that she would go ahead with her visit to New Delhi next week for the security dialogue saying it is more important than ever to stand with India in the struggle against terrorism. “We condemn the despicable act of violence designed to provoke fear and division. Those who perpetrated it must know they cannot succeed”, she said. Reaching out to India, Clinton said “I will be travelling to India next week as planned. I believe it is more important than ever that we stand with India, deepen our partnership and reiterate our commitment to the shared struggle against terrorism.”

Qaida plotting internet jihad London: Al-Qaida is plotting a jihad on the internet against Britain and the West, and has launched teams to target key computer systems, officials said. Terrorists have even tried to invade Facebook in their “campaign of electronic warfare”, The Sun reported. The Google Earth and Street View applications are being used by the terrorists to plan out atrocities, it said. Security officials in Britain say cyber terrorism will become an ever growing threat. A 123-page counter-terror report said a special unit – called the Tariq bin Ziyad Brigades for Electronic Jihad – attacked computers last year. “Since the death of Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda has called not only for acts of lone or individual terrorism but also for cyber jihad,” it said. Experts now say there are thousands of terrorist-related websites, and a “few dozen are highly influential” and frequented by terrorists. “Use of social network sites and video sharing is now commonplace. There have been a number of attempts by terrorist and extremist groups to invade Facebook,” it said. IANS

US woman bobbitises hubby London: A woman in California allegedly drugged her husband, tied him to a bed and cut off his genitals before throwing them into the garbage, police said. Catherine Kieu Becker, 48, told police her husband “deserved it”, The Sun reported. The 51-year-old husband was in a serious condition in hospital after having surgery. The woman is facing charges of spousal abuse, the daily said. One of the first such incidents that gained notoriety was when John Wayne Bobbitt of New York was attacked by his wife Lorena Bobbitt in 1993. Lorena severed John’s genitals with a knife. The genitals were later surgically re-attached. IANS

Britain is Europeʼs top destination London: More immigrants settle permanently in Britain than in any other European country, a study has said. Nearly 397,900 foreign nationals decided to live in Britain in 2009, says the study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The study said the increase was largely down to family members coming to stay with those already in Britain, and the large number of foreign students, reported the Daily Mail. The OECD report – titled “Trends in International Migration” – found Britain was one of the few countries where migrant workers were less likely to end up unemployed than local people. Andrew Green, chairman of think-tank MigrationWatch UK, said the figures showed Labour made Britain a soft touch for immigration. “Labour’s loss of control of immigration has left us with a situation where our population is growing at the fastest rate for 50 years,” he said. The number of permanent migrants in Britain is exceeded only by the US, where 1.1 million people settled permanently in 2009. France had only 178,700 new settlers and Germany 197,500. IANS

Over 1m sites closed in China London: Over one million websites were closed down in China in 2010, BBC reported. The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said there were 41 percent fewer websites at the end of 2010 than in 2009. China has tightened regulations on the internet in recent years, and launched a crackdown on pornographic websites in 2009. Liu Ruisheng, a researcher from the academy, said that despite the declining number of websites, the number of web pages rose to 60 billion during 2010. "This means our content is getting stronger, while our supervision is getting more strict and more regulated," he said. A number of websites such as BBC's Chinese language service, and social media sites like Facebook, Youtube and Twitter are blocked in China. IANS

Clinton said the Indian people have suffered from acts of terrorism before and “we have seen them responding with courage and resilience. We are continuing to monitor the situation including the safety and security of American citizens”. “We reach out to the Indian government to express our condolence and offer support”, she added. “Our hearts are with the victims and their families,” Clinton said. Clinton said neither the US nor Russia are strangers to terrorism, and it has been a mutual goal of both the countries to increase their cooperation in order to prevent terrorists from wreaking their violence on innocent Russians, Americans and others, and to bring those who do so to justice. Canada stands by India, says terrorism is ʻalive and activeʼ Ottawa: Standing by India in the aftermath of the Mumbai bomb blasts, Canada yesterday said terrorism is “alive and active” and the international community should come together to root out this evil. Sending his condolences, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, “On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen (his wife) and I offer our deep and profound sympathy and condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed and injured by these heinous acts of violence, including Canadians who may have loved ones in Mumbai.” The prime minister said the attacks are “a stark reminder that terrorism is alive and active around the globe and can strike at any time. All countries need to work together and take necessary precautions to combat the scourge who perpetrate these atrocities.” Harper, who had visited Mumbai in

November 2009, said Canada “remains united with the government and people of India in their fight against terror. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this difficult time. “We offer our support as India works to bring to justice those responsible for these cowardly attacks against innocent people.” Immigration and citizenship minister Jason Kenney, who had visited Mumbai after the 2008 attacks that killed 166 people, said, “I can tell you having visited Mumbai shortly after, people were still deeply traumatized. “So to see this happen again indicates that the enemies of our democratic values will not relent and it reminds us that the fight against terrorism isn’t a passing thing. It is a long-term fight and regrettably, the people of India are on the front lines.” The immigration minister said, “I am

sure that all Canadians are deeply concerned about these attacks, but I suspect there are tens of thousand of Canadian citizens who have relatives or friends in Mumbai and we want them to know that our consular services are certainly alert to the situation.” Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, who just hosted Bollywood’s IIFA awards here, was also shocked by the terror attacks in Mumbai. “Here in Ontario, we are fortunate to have a community that traces their roots back to India and maintains strong ties with family and friends still there. And on days like this, those ties bring us closer together, through shared grief and resolve to stand up to the forces of hate,” the provincial premier said. The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) also condemned the terrorist attack on India’s commercial capital. IANS

Arthritis genes Kahn sues French discovered writer for charge

Washington; Scientists have discovered eight arthritis genes, a key breakthrough which they say could soon pave the way for the development of effective treatments for a painful form of the condition. An international team, led by Queensland University, claims the discovery will help in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying ankylosing spondylitis, a painful form of arthritis, which fuses bones in the spine and pelvis. AS causes the immune system to attack the spinal and pelvic joints, leading to chronic inflammation. Unlike other forms of arthritis where inflammation leads to bone loss, AS results in bone growth and can consequently cause the spine and pelvis become fused into a fixed position. In their research, the scientists, led by Prof Matt Brown, have identified the eight new genes that help clarify previously unexplained aspects of AS. In particular, these genes help explain why bone formation occurs and why some AS patients also develop the conditions Inflammatory Bowel Disease and/or psoriasis, say the scientists. Professor Matt Brown said the findings shed light on a 40-year-old genetic mystery. In the 1970s it was discovered nearly all AS patients carried a particular gene -- HLA-B27. According to him, “The link between AS and HLAB27 is one of the strongest known genetic associations of any common disease. However, the precise role this gene plays in AS has never been clear until now.” The scientists have discovered that a mutation in a second gene, ERAP1, only appears in HLA-B27 positive AS patients. The finding suggests these two genes work together in AS to disrupt the way the cells in the spinal and pelvic joints interact with the immune system. This, in turn, may help explain the strong immune reaction seen in AS, and is expected to open up new avenues in the search for new drug treatments, say the scientists. “These crucial findings provide the first confirmation that in humans, as has been shown in plant and other animal species, interaction between genes is important in influencing disease risk,” Prof Brown said. The findings are to be published in an upcoming edition of the ‘Nature Genetics’ journal. PTI

London: Former International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn has launched legal action against a French writer who accused him of trying to rape her, a media report said yesterday. Tristane Banon, 32, gave a statement to police on Monday. She had earlier lodged a criminal complaint, the Daily Express reported. The journalist accused the 62year-old former IMF official of acting like a “rutting chimpanzee” during the alleged assault when she went to interview him in a Paris flat in 2003. She claims Strauss-Kahn struggled with her and tried to tear off her clothes. Strauss-Kahn is also facing charges in New York for the attempted rape of a hotel maid.

However, questions have been raised about the maid’s credibility. Banon’s lawyer said her case was “extremely solid and well documented”. “We have physical ¬evidence and text messages. We are not giving up,” the lawyer said. Banon said she did not bring charges eight years ago because at that time everyone told her it would “never succeed”. But following the ¬allegations in New York, she thought there was “perhaps a chance to ¬finally be believed”. Strauss-Kahn’s lawyer in Paris said: “Her claims are imaginary. It never happened. Our legal action was filed, as we had announced, as soon as we learned of the launch of the preliminary inquiry.” IANS

UK flays Mumbai attack London: Britain yesterday de nounced as “deplorable acts of terrorism” the blasts in Mumbai and said it is committed to working with the Indian government to combat the threat of terror in all forms. “I send my deepest condolences to all those who have lost relatives or been injured in the bomb blasts in Mumbai,” said foreign secretary William Hague in a statement. “These were deplorable acts of terrorism. UN chief condemns blasts

United Nations: UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon Wednesday strongly condemned the bomb attacks in Mumbai, saying no cause or grievance can justify the indiscriminate violence against civilians. “The secretary-general condemns the attacks that have killed and injured many today (Wednesday) in Mumbai,” said a statement issued here by his spokesperson. Washington: US President Barack Obama has condemned as “outrageous” the attacks in Mumbai and offered support to bring the perpetrators of the “terrible crimes to justice”. “I strongly condemn the outrageous attacks in Mumbai,” Obama said in a statement. “India is a close friend and partner of the United States. The American people will stand with the Indian people in times of trial, and we will offer support to India’s efforts to bring the perpetrators of these terrible crimes to justice,” he added. “During my trip to Mumbai, I saw firsthand the strength and resilience of the Indian people, and I have no doubt that the India will overcome these deplorable terrorist attacks,” he said. Terror struck Mumbai last evening when three near simultaneous blasts ripped through crowded areas in the city. Meanwhile, under secretary of state for political affairs Bill Burns called foreign secretary Nirupama Rao to offer condolences and support. “Undersecretary Burns did speak just a little while ago with Foreign Secretary Rao to convey our condolences and to offer our support, and worth noting as well that Secretary (of State, Hillary) Clinton will have an op-

portunity to reaffirm our commitment to the US-India partnership when she travels there next week,” State Department spokesperson Mark Toner told reporters at his daily news conference. “The US government condemns this senseless violence in the strongest possible terms. We offer our condolences to the families and friends of those affected by this attack and stand in solidarity with the people of India and Mumbai. We offer our full support and assistance to the government of India in their response to and investigation of the attack,” Toner said. Toner said it is too far to speculate at this point of time if there was any involvement of any Pakistan-based terrorist outfits or that of any Pak official as was the case with 26/11. “We don’t (have any information of involvement of Pak officials). It’s far too early to speculate. The Indian government will no doubt begin an investigation of this incident, and we’ll wait for their results. Gonorrhoea now superbug, may become global threat London: For the first time, scientists have found a “superbug” strain of gonorrhoea, resistant to all recommended antibiotics, which they fear could turn a once easily treatable sexually-transmitted disease into a global public health threat. The new strain of the disease, called H041, was found in Japan and leaves doctors with no other option than to try untested medicines to combat it. The analysis of the strain showed that it was highly resistant to all cephalosporin-class antibiotics – the last remaining drugs still effective in treating gonorrhoea, the Daily Mail reported. Magnus Unemo of the Swedish Reference Laboratory for Pathogenic Neisseria, who discovered the strain with colleagues in samples from Kyoto, described it as “alarming”. “Since antibiotics became the standard treatment for gonorrhoea in the 1940s, this bacterium

lead to infertility. And if it spreads to the blood or joints the condition can be life threatening. The infection, which used to be known as “the clap”, is particularly prevalent among young people aged 16-24 years who accounted for nearly half of the 16,500 new cases of gonorrhoea reported in 2008. What is the point of sex? Brain implants

Now we know, say scientists London: What is the point of sex? Since Charles Darwin’s time, this question has troubled scientists around the world. Not, any more. Thanks to biologists at the University of Indiana who claim to have discovered that animals reproduce together, rather than simply cloning themselves, because it helps them to ward off parasites, ‘The Daily Telegraph’ reported. In fact, according to them, the findings support the evolutionary theory that blending of two animals’ genomes creates an offspring with a new genetic code which may make it more resistant to attack. The biologists say they may have provided the best evidence yet after engineering two types of worms, some which could only reproduce by mating with each other and some could only clone themselves. After exposing them to a harmful bacteria, worms that repro-

duced through sex survived fairly well while those that were asexual died rapidly. Co-author Curtis Lively said: “The Red Queen Hypothesis predicts that sex should allow hosts to evade infection from their par-

asites, whereas self-fertilisation may increase the risk of infection. “The coevolutionary struggle between hosts and their parasites could explain the existence of males.” PTI

Even babies need a good workout

London: Parents, please note – even babies need a good workout, at least three hours of exercise daily, according to a report aimed at stemming the rise of childhood obesity. The British government report said babies should be active from birth. It said that they should be encouraged to crawl on “baby gym” mats, take swimming lessons and walk for at least 15 minutes a day. Drawn up by the chief medical officers for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the guidelines come amid fears over growing childhood obesity and links between lack of activity and brain development. “For children that are not yet walking, there is considerable international evidence that letting children crawl, play or roll on the

floor is essential during early years. “This matters to your child now, to development through adolescence and to their disease profile in later life,” Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer for England, was quoted by the ‘Daily Express’ as saying. Recent studies suggest only 30 per cent of children in England aged between two and 15 get the recommended amount of exercise. Critics, however, say the report fails to recognise the difficulties some parents face. Elaine Hindal of Children’s Society said: “Parents, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, need access to good quality, low-cost play facilities, childcare and support from health visitors.” PTI

get better with help of neurons

Washington: How on earth do busy nerve cells pick and respond to relevant signals amid the relentless bombardment of information? Somehow neurons (nerve cells) do manage to accomplish the daunting task, and they do it with more finesse than anyone ever realized, as new research by University of Michigan shows. The findings of mathematician Daniel Forger and co-authors add to basic knowledge about how neurons work. It also suggests ways of better designing the brain implants, used to treat diseases such as Parkinson’s, the journal Public Library of Science Computational Biology reports. Forger and co-authors David Paydarfar at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and John Clay at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke studied neuronal responses, according to a Michigan statement. Among the key findings are that neurons are adept at their job. “They can pick out a signal from hundreds of other similar signals,” said Forger, research assistant professor of computational medicine and bioinformatics. Neurons discriminate among signals based on the signals’ “shape,” (how a signal changes over time), and the authors found that, contrary to prior belief, a neuron’s preference depends on context.

“We found that neurons can prefer one signal – call it signal A – when compared with a certain group of signals, and a different signal – call it signal B – when compared with another group of signals,” Forger said. This is true even when signal A and signal B are not at all alike. “We found that the optimal stimulus is context-dependent. So the best signal will differ, depending on the part of the brain where the implant is placed,” he said. “Our results determine the optimal signals to stimulate a neuron,” Forger said. “These signals are much more effective and require less battery power than what is currently used,” he added. Such efficiency would translate into less frequent surgery to replace batteries in patients with brain implants, according to Forger. IANS

ctor-turned-director Pankaj Kapoor admits that the story of his directorial debut “Mausam” was specifically conceived for his actor son Shahid, but he had no specific names in his mind for the female lead. “The film was specifically written keeping Shahid in mind. It’s not that I had written the script and then decided on Shahid,” Pankaj told reporters at the launch of the first look of “Mausam” at PVR here Monday. “I had other scripts and we wondered whether Shahid could be part of them or a fresh script should be written for him? We decided to write a fresh script and that’s how the birth of ‘Mausam’ took place,” he added. “Mausam”, a love story, will see Shahid as a pilot and he has teamed up with Sonam Kapoor in it. “While writing, there was no girl in my head, it was the character that was in my head. I think Sonam was the very first actress who was approached for the role,” Pankaj said. The 57-year-old, known for his work on television like the comedy show “Office Office” and his performance in movies like “Maqbool”, “Dharm” and “Blue Umbrella”, says he has been longing to direct a film. “I had wanted to direct a film for a long time. I have directed on television for five years. So there was this desire to direct. I was writing for a long time. There were talks about my directing a film for a long time and here came a moment where we decided to go for this film,” said Pankaj. He claims his movie will set new standards in filmmaking. “It has its own comment to make. Though the endeavour is to make an entertaining film, which reaches to almost everyone and yet have a certain level of presentation that appeals to one and all. It will be able to set some kind of a standard of work,” he said. He maintains that being an actor himself had helped him extract exactly what he had conceived from the lead pair.

horeographer-director Farah Khan was assigned the task of choreographing a song with Asin Thottumkal, Zarine Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez along with their partners Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and Riteish Deshmukh for “Housefull 2” and she says it was not easy. The song for the film, produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by Sajid Khan, was shot in in Petersborough in England. “...Doing a song with two heroes and two heroines in ‘Housefull’ was gruelling enough. Here I’ll have to ‘sambhalo’ three pairs. And during the song the pairs get inter-changed also. It’s quite a challenge. ‘Lekin kya karoon’? I can’t say no to the two Sajids in my life. One is my brother. The other is my husband’s producer and also like my brother. Main to phans gayi,” said Farah. As a source said: “It’s bad enough handling dance steps of two leading ladies. But three? Asin is an expert dancer and she is opposite the biggest star of the film (Akshay). So she’d be within her rights to expect the best steps. “On the other hand Zarine, Salman’s blue-eyed babe thinks she’s the hottest item girl after ‘Character dheela’. Unka to haq banta hai. Jacqueline, of course, is the new ‘It’ girl and therefore a star in her own right. Besides she shot ‘Apni to aise taise with Farah for the two Sajids’ Housefull.”

ollywood actress Priyanka has kept her distance from item numbers and plans to continue doing so, even as rumours arre swirling of her of agreeing to a saucy dance sequence for “Tezz”. But the 28-year-old’s spokesperson has denied that Priyanka has signed up for any item song. “The rumors of Priyanka doing an item number in the film are baseless and unsubstantiated. She has not had discussions with anyone related to the film with regards to the same,” Priyanka’s spokesperson told IANS. The grapevine was abuzz that the “Desi girl” will dance to a Sajid-Wajid number in Priyadarshan’s “Tezz”, starring Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgn and Kangna Ranaut. But it isn’t true. Meanwhile, she has given a nod for doing a cameo in Shah Rukh Khan’s mega-budget superhero film “RA.One”, which is set for a Diwali release.

aniel Radcliffe’s role in the Harry Potter franchise turned him into a star, but the actor will not play the same character again as he feels the boy wizard’s story has ended in a “perfect way”. “I’m the only person in the world that doesn’t want there to be an eighth Harry Potter book,” he told Star magazine. “Believe me, I’ve given 10 years – I can! I think it’s been an amazing 10 years and I would be quite happy for it to finish at this point because the stories were rounded off in such a succinct and perfect way,” said the actor who will be seen in the last installment “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2”, which is releasing on Friday. The 21-year-old, who started his journey with the franchise in 2001 with “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, however, admits he pwill always be “proud” of his work on the movie series, reports contactmusic.com. “Every opportunity I will get for the rest of my life, I would not have got if it wasn’t for Harry Potter. ctor Shahid Kapur, who had the rare experience of flying multirole jet fighter aircraft F-16 to adapt traits of a fighter pilot for his forthcoming film “Mausam”, takes pride in being the only film actor to have flown that ultimate flying machine. “I was quite fortunate that I flew an F16 fighter plane. I don’t think any other actor has ever flown a F-16. Even when actor Tom Cruise had done ‘Top Gun’ he had flown an F15. I was very fortunate to get that opportunity. It was a very exciting experience for me,” Shaid told reporters at the first look of the film at the PVR here Monday. The actor had flown the American fighter aircraft at the AeroIndia defence exhibition in Bangalore earlier this year. Sharing his overwhelming experience, Shahid reveals: “Honestly I was not fond of flying in a plane but when I actually sat in it and flew it I was so excited that I started shouting. It was probably the most exhilarating experience one could have. I am someone who loves speed anyway. “So, the fact that I was sitting in a F-16 and I was a co-pilot was unbelievable. I also went through G force. If you know when you fly such a plane you can go up to G9. G1 is when you feel your body weight; G2 is when you feel two times your body weight. He (The co-pilot) took me up to G6. That’s something I would take through my grave with me.” “I think it was required to understand my part better and it helped me to understand what all goes to become a fighter pilot,” he added. Shaid closely followed the mannerisms of the Indian Air Force pilots in the bases

he visited and maintains that he is completely in awe of their attitude. “I visited some air force bases to meet some air force pilots; I sat on the aircraft, I put on the G-suit, observed how they walk with the helmet. All things like that which actually gives you some kind of perspective of what it is to be representing the country and to be the part of the arm force and to be an Air Force pilot.
