St. Andrew’s Parish to celebrate 400th Anniversary The year 2015 marks the beginning of the 400th anniversary of the formation of the Parish of St. Andrew’s Church in Bandra. The Church of St. Andrew is one of the oldest churches, not only in Bandra but across the city of Mumbai. In fact it is about 50 years older than the Taj Mahal in Agra, with the present structure of the church being built in the year 1600. History and architecture of the church St. Andrew’s Church has a rich history spanning the last four centuries. The stone cross in south section of the church compound is a relic connecting St. Andrew’s with its older sister Church of St. Anne’s, which was destroyed in 1739. It was originally located in the compound of St Anne’s, close to where the present-day Bandra Suburban Railway Station is located and moved by Fr. Francisco de Mello, a vicar of St. Andrew’s around the year 1800. According to local legend, it was said that when some disaster was about to

occur a pink glow would be visible around this cross. The north tower also serves as the belfrey, and houses the three bells that ring out each day at the times of the Angelus, at sunrise, noon and sunset as well as on festive occasions as at the Christmas Mass and the Easter Mass. The bells were also used to sound an alarm and to call the parishioners to assemble. Fairly recently in February 1956, the bells were rung to call for help when there was a fire on the main altar. Numerous parishioners mainly from Chimbai raced to the church and put off the blaze well before the fire brigade arrived. Another interesting feature of the church is the small sun window which has been constructed to permit the rays of the rising sun, at around 7am, to fall directly on the keystone of the sanctuary arch, on two days in the year during the equinoxes, on March 22nd & September 22nd. With inputs from the guide book to St. Andrew’s Church being released on 22nd Nov. Contd on Page 10 >>

100 years old Bandra Fish market has neither a toilet nor water

Bandra

The heritage fish market at Bazaar Road, Bandra (W) has no toilet and no drinking water. The market is over 100 years old and never in these years was a toilet facility provided. There is a BMC tap inside the market but there is never water in it. Around 20-30 fisherwomen sell fish at the market everyday from morning 10am2pm and in the evening from 5pm-9:30pm. According to the shopkeepers at the mutton market, which is right behind the fish market, there was a toilet built initially which was broken as it was filled with garbage. But after that nothing was built and till today, after years together, there has been no toilet. No political party or BMC has taken up the initiative to build a toilet. Currently, there are two toilets behind the chicken shops which are a little beyond the fish market. But those toilets are extremely filthy without light and water. They are always filled with waste which is not flushed away. So, the fisherwomen have to use these dirty toilets in the dark without a single drop of water. A shopkeeper over there commented, “I have my shop since 35 years just opposite the fish market but never ever have I seen a cleanup drive by the BMC or any authority at the market. In fact due to lack of water and toilet, the fisherwomen carry their own water to drink.” Another shopkeeper admitted, “In my 40 years of experience just beside this market, I have never seen the concrete structure of the market being renovated or at least maintained. It is as it is! Just because the British has built it, the structure is strong.” But, how long will this structure remain firm? It may collapse one day as it has become weak and stills were already installed in the past to support the structure. The fisherwomen themselves claimed,

“There is no toilet for us since years inside the market. We come every morning from different places like Khar Danda, Chimbai, Chium, Bandra, and so on. And we have to manage nature’s call as there is no facility.” These fisherwomen work for at least 4-5 hours every day at a stretch and in that even if they get nature’s call, they have to manage somehow. The residents staying just besides the fish market claimed, “We have seen the market grow since years. The government built sheds to shelter the fisherwomen during rains. But the structure is the same and clean toilets are not there at all.” Another resident said, “Cleanliness is not there. The whole market is unhygienic as there is inadequate water to clean, and the garbage is thrown on the road and outside the dust bin. The whole market stinks so the quality of fish is affected.”

This fish market is the largest fish market of Bandra where people from all over Mumbai come to buy fish every day. The fisherwomen have been serving thousands of customers by selling fish since decades yet there has been no cleanliness, no hygiene, and no toilet and water facility ever. These fisher folk have to do their business in filthy conditions and use the only two toilets which are never cleaned and always surrounded by garbage. It is also a question of women’s dignity for they have to urinate in those toilets which do not have proper doors and electricity. Also, with men loitering all around the place, it is a question of the respect of women! Our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself aims to provide toilets for women so that their dignity in society is not hampered. Then, why are the fisherwomen not protected in a respected area like Bandra? Why

is there not a single clean toilet for these women since 100 years? Are we going against the Prime Minister’s goals? We are grateful to the authorities concerned for having built the shed to protect the fisherwomen from the rains. But it is high time now that a toilet needs to be built & water facility implemented inside the market so that the fisher folk can do their business with ease in healthy conditions. Never has a political party done a whole clean up at the market. Therefore we request honourable MLA Adv Ashish Shelar & the political authority of the Bazaar Galli respected Mr. Raja Babar to do something for the betterment of the society & protect the old heritage structure which is an honour of Mumbai. Swachch Bharat Abhiyan begins with clean toilets for women! Let us protect those who give us fish food to eat. Ronald Rodrigues

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan… Keeping India Clean! Our Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has a great idea. But photo ops of ministers, with brooms in their hands; sweeping the roads - is not going to keep India clean, unless they plan to do it every day! It is the job of the BMC and the citizens', not to mess in the first place. We are all part of the problem. To this end, the Hon. Secretary of our Society, St. Sebastian Colony, Mr. Warren Fernandes, came up with the idea of having a Swachch Bharat drive on each road in the society, every saturday. We, St. Roque Road, were the first to kick-start this programme. Saturday, the 17th October, saw the residents of St. Roque Road come out in large numbers to meet and help the BMC … officers, mukadams, and sweepers…in cleaning up the road. Brooms were provided and many of our members were seen sweeping up fallen leaves, stray bits of paper etc. into heaps, and the BMC sweepers collecting them and dumping them into the bins. Heaps of cut branches of trees, thrown on the pavements of our road, were collected by the BMC trucks that were commissioned for the same. Our Corporator, Ms. Karen D’Mello, was present, and was a great help in getting the trucks to clear the garbage away. Some of our people also cleared the grass from between the pavement tiles. Parked cars were moved away to facilitate the cleaning. All in all, it was a great experience, and very importantly, the residents of our road

decided to revive our ALM! (which we are working on, at present). I understand that Warren took up this initiative not only to have a Swacch Bharat drive but a ‘Living in Harmony’ drive, as people came out (business owners and house wives alike), sweeping the roads and clearing the weeds from the paver blocks. Thank you, Warren and Karen, for this great initiative. Patrice Fernandes

Letters to the Editor

It is very difficult to walk on footpaths - if there are any! We are forced to walk on the road and face the wrath of oncoming cars and bikes. Crossing Hill Road, cars don’t bother to stop. Hotel Delight corner and A1 Bakery has parked cars and bikes almost 24x7. Elders are forced to walk on roads facing oncoming traffic and just about manage to save our toes/legs. The paver blocks are uneven, so we are forced to look down all the time, lest we fall and get a fracture!! On the whole traffic is very bad at these junctions. Vera de Rozario

INCREASED DAL PRICING With an alarming increase in the prices of dal the state govt's action on hoarding has had zero impact on the ground reality. Rubbishing the government's claim to have cracked down on black-marketers, I strongly feel that their action is just an eyewash. Checking at various shops I found that the price of dal is still high and beyond the reach of the common man. In suburbs tur dal is being sold for Rs 210 per kg which is nothing but misleading the people. All must protest against the government for its failure to control the price rise. Vikrant Shahri

NO BAN ON CRACKERS The statement made by the Supreme Court that there will be no complete ban on crackers during Diwali. It has been observed that millions burn crackers and there is no such law which can stop them and the Apex Court feel that people must be aware of the dangerous pollution which is created by crackers. Our government has failed to create awareness amongst people. Diwali as it is the Festival of Light but it has become the festival of noise and pollution

Dear Reader, As autumn gradually glides to winter, Bandraites love November – as the weather gets cooler, yet is not too cold as winter. With westerly winds, wonderful walks on our sea-side promenades make memorable moments come alive. Upcoming events increase in frequency, as the festive season approaches. Bandra, Khar & Santacruz have superb social hubs that are now abuzz with serious chatter of positive plans and preparations – as countdown to that ‘special event’. Even as this happens, the naked truth is evident everywhere. The divide between the ‘people-with-plenty’ & the ‘have-nots’ has a very wide gap, that is widening day by day. These extreme lifestyles are poles apart, yet live close enough to create interactions that can vary from ‘domestic help’ to petty crimes, that can soon turn violent. Just take a detailed unbiased tour of Bandra – and you will see the real underbelly of your super suburb. Here, garbage and filthy conditions abound. Bandra Bazar, Bandra Reclamation, Kadeshwari, Ambedkar road slums, Khar-Danda & the areas east of Bandra Railway Station and beyond have neglected pockets of unhygienic conditions that breed disease – dengue in particular. In contrast, we have posh buildings with premium flats having international standard amenities. Addresses at Pali Hill, Carter Road, Bandstand and other prime localities are everybody’s envy. With many top business persons & Bollywood celebrities choosing to live in Bandra, property prices

are beyond the reach of a salaried person – so successful business persons from other areas are buying prime real estate here – and employing those from the ‘have-nots’ category. As everybody has aspirations and dreams of a better life, these employees have a sneak peek of the ‘good life’. Soon, minds work at 90 miles an hour to find a shortcut to being successful. And... before you can blink, robbery & rape is on their agenda. With nothing to lose, plans are put into practice. Bandra Buzz can alert you, if brave citizen journalist inform us as these upheavals evolve. As your favourite neighbourhood newspaper, we will highlight news worthy information that can save situations – provided this is backed by proper proof. Do use this media platform to showcase ‘the naked truth’, so that people benefit & the great divide reduces. The target should be co-existence with a win-win situation. Bandra Buzz wishes you a “Happy Diwali” – that lights up your life with a “Prosperous New Year”. Till next time, take care.

& looking at the present scenario it is impossible to change it. I strongly feel that there must be time limit to burst the crackers particularly during the night time and there must be police supervision if anybody violets the norms and government must take this matter seriously and follow the order of the Supreme Court. TIME AND TIDE WAITS FOR NO MAN, THUS “THE TURNING TIDE”

Bandra

It is common knowledge that the temperature around the globe has been rising at an alarmingly accelerated rate, the summers get even more excruciatingly fierce and we the residents of Bandra, Mumbai do not really have a winter that we can call winter anymore. On the other hand the island nation of Mauritius hopes to find a solution for their rising water levels, based on the 1995 Kevin Costner film Waterworld, considering in the next 50 odd years majority of their land will be submerged underwater. “Time and Tide waits for no man”, and it is quite evident with the environmental change that is unfolding. George Remedios and Calvin Andrade have however, decoded this proverb to its core and have thus started a movement called “The Turning Tide”. Their objective is quite simple, plant more trees through recycling. They started off around three months back and so far have planted around 70 trees throughout Bandra, Khar and Santacruz. This includes their own colonies, a few bungalows and a handful of residential societies. They have set up a fruit orchid behind The Sacred Heart School building in Santacruz and planted saplings in Joggers Park, slowly venturing into public spots. The Turning Tide (TTT) functions not depending on direct monetary donations but aims to address the issue of waste man-

agement/recycling to raise funds for their movement. The saplings that are planted are purchased from a nursery and are paid for; in addition to that they have to bear the cost for commuting and transporting the plants. They appeal to citizens to help them raise funds by providing them with their recyclables, be it in the form of plastic, old newspaper, magazines, cardboard boxes, glass and metal. They can direct the reuse and recycle of the junk in an efficient manner. Their operations are transparent and they encourage donors to take an active part in seeing through their waste being the source of new life. They have joined hands with Hive, a Khar based performance center and installed waste bins, this is another innovative method of collecting waste, the plastic glass and plates are collected and sold to the junkyard and the funds generated through this is then reinvested to purchase plant saplings. It is a solution to not one but two priority issues, recycling and planting of trees. George and Calvin emphasis on the need to have higher number of fruit trees which will aid balance out the ecological structure for birds, the number of bird species in the city has dwindled due to the lack of fruit trees that provide nourishment for them to thrive. TTT are also in the process of filing papers to start an NGO which will enable them to get corporate support. They are constantly on the move and hope for the

residents to come out, join hands with them and get their feet a little dirty. Societies can reach out to them and provide them with space to plant trees. Up next on their agenda is to plant coconut trees around the Titan clock on Carter road. During the course of our conversation quite a few facts caught my attention for example that only 7% of plastic worldwide is recycled the remaining 93% is dumped underground or set a blazed. But what really took the pie was the various objections people raise while they are trying to do

When will the Chimbai beach be cleant?

07

uzz

Over 1 km of Chimbai beach stretch is filled with tones of garbage of over 2 years. Since 2013, a cleanup has not been done at the Chimbai coast where around 100 houses are there right at the shore with over 150 fisher folk living there. The waste has been deposited by the sea and the people too have been throwing garbage as the BMC garbage truck comes only once a day to collect the garbage from their houses. On January 22, 2015 Daven Kandoria, Vice President (Mumbai) of The National Association of Fishermen had written to the hounourable MLA, Adv. Ashish Shelar addressing the rising garbage at Chimbai seashore. He also mentioned that no clean up drive had been done since more than a year and the condition was extremely bad. He requested the honourable MLA to take some initiative to clean the Chimbai beach. As per the documented authentic mail sent, there was no reply from the respected MLA. At that time, there was no place for the BMC truck to enter the Chimbai coast due to various structures in the way. So in the same mail, Daven suggested honourable MLA to build a ramp so that the trucks could come over to both the sides of the sea shore and clean the whole area. But there was no reply for the suggestion too. On July 31, 2015, Daven again wrote to MLA congratulating him for taking up the Chimbai Beach Cleaning Program and also extended his help in any way possible. However, there was no reply. On August 1, 2015 at 10am, a cleanup drive called Bhoomipoojan Samarambh, Chimbai Jeti Jawal was organised by the MLA himself and pamphlets for the same were distributed prior in the whole Chimbai area. However, on the day of the

Cleanup drive, nobody turned up and the drive was postponed as per sources. In short, there was no cleanliness thing that happened. But in the first week of September 2015, a ramp was built by MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar. So, though the MLA had not responded verbally on mail to Daven, he had taken his suggestion & implemented it. The newly built ramp allows truck to pass easily from one side of the shore to the other & can clean the entire area by directly accessing the long coastline. It has been over a month that the ramp was built yet there has not been a single cleanup done. Daven Kandos claims, “The garbage is still lying and is increasing every day. During monsoons, the water enters the house of the fisher folk living close to the shore and leaves all the garbage in their houses. Fishing is getting affected largely as conditions are unhygienic.” Brian Dharmai, a resident of Chimbai since 40 years complaints, “The coast is filthy. We can’t walk on the shore as there are pieces of glass and garbage all over. Earlier, we used to play at the beach but now we don’t even feel like going to the beach for both the water and the land are dirty. And you can see only plastic everywhere.” Paul Uttankar, a fisherman living at Chimbai for over 60 years, claims, “When I was small, we used to lie down at the beach and enjoy the beautiful sea. But now the whole shore is dirty. There is no clean up ever! It stinks and it is difficult to live here. Our fishing culture is largely affected and is deteriorating.”

Prabha Pandey, a writer urges, “Being a Bandraite, I want to know what is happening with the cleanliness issue at Chimbai! We all just want to know that when is the garbage going to be cleared. How long have we to bear this nuisance and stay in such unhealthy conditions? Our children who once played out in the open at the beach now have to play at home. Because of the extensive garbage, they cannot go out and experience the beauty of nature. Is this how Bandra’s precious nature is treated?” Rehan Merchant, a socially inclined Bandraite, brought to our notice a tweet to Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 3, 2015 from MLA Ashish Shelar’s twitter handle saying that the Chimbai beach had been cleant and also two pictures were posted. As Rehan Merchant practices photography he claimed, “The photographs are two different photographs. They are shot from two different positions. The beach is not cleant at all. In fact there was no ramp built on September

3, 2015 so how did the cleaning take place? There is definitely some error.” Moreover, health hazards have increased and the residents are affected considerably. The MLA has done a great job by building the ramp but what next? When will the garbage be cleant? If one cleanliness drive was postponed when is it going to happen next? Now that the trucks can easily enter the beach and access every area, what is stopping the authorities from taking the initiative to clean the shore line? Garbage continues to enter the houses of Chimbaikars. As Chimbai is not in the limelight & is a hidden village at the shore of the sea, the people of Bandra have not witnessed the filth lying there. Nobody has strived to improve their conditions in past 2 years except some efforts from Mr. Shelar by building the ramp. And since the ramp is built the only question all Bandraites ask is –When will the Chimbai beach be cleant? Ronald Rodrigues

Healthy customised Cakes, pastries, brownies, chocolates and much more‌

Bandra

Do you want to eat chocolates and cakes but are health conscious at the same time? Are you afraid that eating pastries and brownies will increase your weight and aect your health? Then don’t worry at all! Because Naina Chhibbar has got customised cakes, cupcakes, tea cakes, slice cakes, chocolates, muďŹƒns, brownies, pastries, marzipans, cookies, chocolate pizza and much more‌ And all this is homemade out of whole wheat to maintain your health. And Naina makes these items the way you want it! You just have to demand what you want, how you want and when you want and Naina will try her best to deliver it!

Eat bindaas and yet be healthy Naina believes that health should not come in the way of food. So, she prefers making tasty irresistible items with healthy ingredients so that people are not hesitated from grabbing a bite. Naina does not use maida at all, all her items especially her cakes are made out of pure nutritious whole wheat. She prefers eggless items over egg, jaggery or brown sugar over normal sugar and rice oil over butter so that the fat and cholesterol content is less but the taste is same. Whole wheat contains good proportion of carbohydrates which is good for health and strengthens the body. Naina also makes gluten free cakes for diabetic customers and uses ingredients according to their need. And if at all you wish maida or egg cake, Naina makes that too. No compromise on Quality and Ingredients ‘Fresh is healthy and tasty’ - Naina ďŹ rmly follows this as all her ingredients are fresh and delightful. She uses fresh fruits, vegetables, dry fruits, cream, juices, nuts and even fresh toppings. Her pineapple and cinnamon preparations are spellbound and you will feel the freshness just by the aroma. She does not compromise on any of her ingredients and quality at all. She remembers, “I had made a cake which didn’t bake properly but was tasting ďŹ ne. Yet I threw the whole cake and gave it to the birds to eat as it was not perfect.â€? Taste it and feel it “Take a bite and you will feel what is in itâ€?,

says Naina as she challenges everyone that she literally puts everything that she mentions. In today’s market, often we are fooled when we eat an almond cake with just half an almond or a vanilla chocolate with just vanilla essence but no actual vanilla in it! Naina names her items only after she adds those ingredients in it. You can feel the pieces of fruits, dates and nuts in every bite that you take. Her items are as soft, as crisp and as tasty as any normal cake made of maida and other ingredients that may harm your health. Order anything as you wish From small orders like a birthday cake to 5000 chocolates for a party, Naina makes everything. She supplies cakes to gyms, shops, eateries, makes decorative chocolates for corporate gifting and other items for various events. Also she has her exhibition at the Lil Flea event every year as she testiďŹ es, “For the ďŹ rst time I displayed my items at Lil Flea last year and I got tremendous response. Everything was sold. In fact people wanted more.â€? Since Dussehra, Diwali and Christmas are soon to arrive, you can contact Naina for your delicacies and she will make your work easy by lightening your burden of preparing sweets. Super woman A mother of two teenage daughters, a housewife of a supportive husband, daugh-

ter-in-law of a helpful mother-in-law and an entrepreneur herself, Naina Chhibbar manages work, home, children, in-laws, along with this business. Therefore she works from home and makes all these items single handedly. She has her children’s responsibilities so she does not plan to buy a shop. She says, “I often run around reaching my kids to school and then rushing home straight into the kitchen and bake till late night. So I am always on my toes. But my family has supported me a lot and I owe everything to them. Having done no course in cooking at all, Naina has learnt everything just by trying

and experimenting new items. Cooking is an activity where we often make mistakes and every ingredient is important. You can’t put it more neither can you put it less! Everything has to be perfect. And Naina too has faced all these diďŹƒculties yet today after one and a half year of her business named Divine by NC , she says, “I am learning and improving each day. My business is growing slowly and I am becoming more passionate about cooking.â€? Divine by NC 9819361991 / 26045015 Ronald Rodrigues

not been leeched and monopolized by electronic music and the greed of authorities. His rational is quite relevant and true considering that most weddings and shows have electronic music at its crux, hampering and reducing the avenues for musicians and a band to perform. The reasons that have led to such a situation are quite evident partly because of the changing culture and majorly because of the lack of support from the people who form the rules. Coming back as to why the quote by Bob Marley “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no painâ€?, is apt for Joe Vessaokar is because his solace and belief is that when people are grieving and want to bid farewell to their loved ones, they deem ďŹ t their art and presence, which is the performance of a live band at such times. Therefore he is content with being a catalyst of reliving pain and consolation. Sidhant Nayangara

God is in the details, and details are perfected with discipline, Joe wakes up at 5 am and starts practicing, thereafter he plays at St. Peters or Mount Carmel Church for the morning mass. He tutors young aspiring musicians and also teaches music at schools, he often practices outside his house much to the delight of his neighbors. His word of advice for young musicians is to work and master the right technique, gain knowledge from veterans and to get a ďŹ rm and sound foundation. “Practice every day because learning never ends and the way you play is only a reection of how you practice.â€? He states. Having performed at shows, festivals, wedding and funerals, Joe feels that at funerals one has to play by investing pure feelings and emotions, he further emphasis that it’s the only aspect of his art that has

“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain. said the revolutionary song writer and performer Bob Marley, and this quote is apt for the person in discussion Mr. Joe Vessaokar. Born in the year 1950 into a family that has music in its DNA, Mr. Vessaokar is a trumpet and clarytone musician par excellence. He attributes his skills to the 55 years of dedicated practice & experience that he has garnered along the way. Noting down the plethora of achievements in his musical journey in an inverse chronological order so far, performed live at the Mahindra Blues Festival 2014 with his band Joe and the Topcats which he formed in 2012, performed live at Baajaa Gaajaa music gathering in Pune, member of the Bombay Chamber Orchestra playing alongside musician from India and UK, part of the supporting musicians team for Bollywood composers such as the great R. D. Burman, Kalyanji Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal. First Indian national to have performed in Tazirbu, Libya on the occasion of World War 2 soldiers day memorial in 1985, founder and coordinator of Joe and his Swing band in 1980, joined Len and his

Rebels band in the year 1973 and was, member of Sebastian Vessaokar Band which was formed in the year 1940 by his father Sebastian Vessaokar. Going back to his roots, Joe’s grandfather Martin Vessaokar was part of one of Bandra’s foremost bands by the name of St. Paul’s Bandit was formed in the year 1890 and based out of Chapel Road, making him the third generation of musicians. One of 6 brothers all of whom mastered at least one music instrument and four sisters who concentrated on the vocal aspect, Joe himself started o with the drums during his budding years while playing for his father’s band, eventually ďŹ nding his true calling in the wind section of acoustics. He recalls never falling short of inspiration and the sources where not constrained to his own household, because back in his childhood many families in Bandra encouraged and nurtured musical aspirations. He joyfully proclaims how Waroda, Chapel and Bazar road used to be a hub of music and always on its toes, alive with tunes of poetry and prose. 400-year celebrations While the church structure is more than 400 years old, it was only in 1616 that the church was conferred the status of a parish. This is the major milestone that will be celebrated by the parish through the year, starting this November and culminating in December 2016. The parishioners of St. Andrew’s, led by parish priest, Fr. Caesar D’Mello are planning a host of cultural activities, inter-religious dialogues, spiritual and social outreach programmes, and youth engagement events. There will also be a commemorative stamp and a historical volume documenting the growth of this parish unveiled during the year. One of the first big highlights of the year is the eagerly-anticipated Andrean Fair which will be held from the 27th to the 29th of November 2015. The Andrean Fair is one of many cultural events started at St. Andrew’s that has stood the test of time. Originally launched in the 1960s as a fund-raiser, this event has always been a huge hit in and around Bandra, with three days of fun and entertainment for people of all ages from 5 to 85. This year, the Andrean Fair will be brought out in a brand new avatar, having been revamped and restyled for the 400th anniversary. It will feature a mouth-watering cuisine, a flea market, popular bands and artists, including a few star performers from Bandra. You can catch the pre-event buzz on facebook.com/standrewbandra and read all the details on the fair in the next edition of Bandra Buzz.

We aimed to show the contrast between Gender Equality and Gender Bias.We had an interactive session with Mr. Rohit Roy, critically acclaimed TV and stage actor of Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand and Unfaithfully Yours fame, on how women empowerment is essential, but supporting women is not equal to suppressing men. We also had Mr. Amit Deshpande, the founder of Vaastav foundation an NGO dedicated to men’s right activism, who told us how in today’s society men are vulnerable when it comes to false allegations, because of the misguided bias towards

First ‘Youth Conclave’ - Ensuring Our Future

22nd October, 2015 saw another ‘Red Lettered Day’ for the B.E.I.A. The association with a view to expand its activities, organized the first conclave for the youth at Mogli Gardens, Kurla. Education is not just received within the four walls of a classroom, but through experience received from daily life. These practical experiences and knowledge was shared by eminent speakers, who have been successful in their own walks of life. It was indeed ‘history-in-the-making’. The event opened in a thorough Indian manner with the lighting of the ‘samaya’ followed by the prayer made by Rev. Fr. Ryan Alex, director of the diocese, youth center. Fr. Ryan Alex also addressed the gathering speaking on the values of life. The seed has been sown, as Fr. Don Rodrigues puts it - and the watering will surely go on by the association - as this is surely the first time, but not the last. The speaker Mr. Noora Bhai spoke on intercommunal harmony. He pointed out that life began from the ‘Stone Age’ and today, even with progress in society, we have turned ‘Stone Hearted’; which is leading to disharmony in society. Retired senior police inspectors, Dr. Rolfie Pereira (A.S.P.), spoke on Drugs and Addiction, while Mr. Brandon Bracko (D.S.P.), spoke on the Nigerian and Bank Frauds taking place. It is truly said “Money makes the world go round’ and our youth were given an in-

sight into ‘Wealth Creation’ by Ms. Sharionelle Pereira. Mr. Ladislaus Pereira spoke on education, informing the youth that education is a sword - which today can be used effectively for a better tomorrow. The more educated you are, increases chances for a better life. He told the youth that they do not have to waste time in getting one degree at a time, but one can study for two degrees at a time from different universities. ‘Politics is a dirty game’, is a phrase always dinned into us - but, as Mr. Brian Miranda, (Municipal Corporator) puts it; an educated politician can help bring about change in society. All you need is zeal and faith in oneself, in the fight against the wrongs happening in society. Mr. Godfrey Pimenta spoke on the issues and problems faced by East Indians around the city, while Mr. Nicholas Almeida in his own imitable style, called upon the youth to lay out course of action which is the need of the hour. The youth applauded the speakers, but felt that they should be given more time for imparting more information. The youth are thirsty for knowledge and hence the B.E.I.A. will surely hold more sessions for our future generations, said Adv. Vivian D’Souza - President B.E.I.A. Mrs. Theresa Aguiar, Hon General Secretary - B.E.I.A., rounded off the session with special thanks to Mr. Moses Gomes, Trustee - Michael High School, for the use of their premises and to all the eminent speakers of the day. Coming back to the BJP government’s response, there are two issues that arise and need to be addressed 1. Who is the competent authority to decide whether a controversial play is blasphemous or not. It will obviously be the most respected authority within that faith, who study the Holy Books and interpret the Holy Book for the faithful. In case of the Catholics, it is the Archdiocese. 2. Secondly the government should have a

specific mechanism to deal with controversial plays / films / advertisements / books / paintings etc. that incite religious sentiments. Does the government issue a ban based on the feedback of the competent authority of the affected religion or is the court the correct forum to approach. More importantly, having taken a very blind and unconcerned approach to the hurt caused to the Catholic community by the play, will the government have a similar approach when the Hindu beliefs / deities are questioned? I can’t help thinking the BJP’s government’s approach is meant to shake the faith of the non-Catholic devotee’s (read Hindu) in Mother Mary as also question the respect given to the Nuns who are actively involved in the education sector. While I strongly believe that it is fundamentally wrong to segregate society on religious lines and constantly remind them of their minority status, no government in power can take a hands off approach when anybody attacks the fundamental tenets of a religion. As Minority Affairs Minister, Mr. Eknath Khadse’s, primary function is to give respect to all religions and thereby ensure peace and harmony. He should ensure that people of different faiths, majority and minority alike, have the liberty to practice their religion in peace and the effort should

be when the next elections come around, there will be no need for a Minority Affairs Minister as the people will be assured that they can practice their religion in peace and they will be convinced the government of the day will protect that right…..Rather, Mr. Khadse’s attitude has been extremely disappointing to say the least, he first says there he nothing he can do in the matter, and later when approached by Christian / Catholic organizations, promises to see the play and decide for himself whether it should be banned. Is the Minority Affairs Minister supposed to see a controversial play / film etc. and decide whether to ban it or not. Would the Minister have the necessary understanding of that particular faith to make a proper decision? By this act, the BJP government has created a lot of animosity in the heart of the law-abidding, peace loving Catholic of Mumbai. The BJP should not forget their election assurances of “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas” and “Respect for All, Appeasement of None”, which have won them many a admirer among the minorities. As a law abiding, God fearing Indian Catholic, I demand respect for my religious beliefs….I don’t ask that you share my beliefs, but I do demand that my beliefs be respected. Sunita Colaco

opened, to enable the Catholic community to approach the courts? To add insult to injury, there is even a subsequent article saying that the play opened to ‘critical acclaim’. If anyone can attack the Catholic faith, which essentially preaches peace to the extent of turning the other cheek, how much more critically should one question faiths that allow you to kill in the name of religion???....Read Babri / Dadri or even the bomb blasts that are supposedly a reaction to the riots? All religions are about the Leap of Faith and how trust and belief go beyond the twin barriers of rational thinking and scientific approach. India is essentially a nation of fervently devout believers, and it would create a lot of friction in society if we cannot respect each other’s religion. The focus should not be on questioning the basic tenets of any religion, rather we should show by our actions how great our religion

Bandra

By permitting the play Agnes of God to be staged, the BJP government has not only hurt the sentiments of the Catholic community, but has opened a Pandora’s box, setting a very dangerous precedent. The question is not whether the “thinking Catholic” is open to questions being asked about the Immaculate Conception. The question is that if the BJP government has permitted the play, Agnes of God, to question the very foundation of the Catholic faith, then tomorrow, would they also “wash their hands of” if someone put up a play questioning the basic tenets of Hinduism or Islam? The title itself - Agnes of God - is a snide and derogatory reference to ‘Mother of God – Mother Mary’. How many of us would tolerate any insult to our own natural Mother…..How much more respect, should we therefore accord, to a divine person (Mother Mary), who without question, accepted God’s plan for Her and gave birth to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour and went through the unimaginable pain of having her Son crucified before her eyes? Infact, by clarifying on the day the play opened, just a few hours before it was due, that the BJP government would not take any action, the government has deliberately denied the Catholic community a chance to approach the courts. Should the clarification by the government not have come a week or two before the play

INDIAN ARTISAN CHOCOLATES

occur a pink glow would be visible around this cross.
