60 year old resident saves Sherly Village Three 4G towers illegally installed by Raj Kaushal were demolished by the efforts of Allan Dominic Pereira along with the BMC and political authorities at Sherly village on November 5, 2015. The whole Shirley gaothan signed a campaign against these towers as they were harmful to their health and illegal. Allan Pereira, 60 years old, took the initiative of noticing, informing and single handedly conducting a signature campaign to fight against this menace. This was pro-active activism at its best. On November 2, 2015 Allan no-

ticed these three Reliance Jio 4G towers on the terrace of Rama 2 building which is just next to his residence at Sherly gaothan, Bandra West. Unaware of the ill effects of these metal towers, Allan was happy that these towers would improve the internet connectivity of their village and provide the youth mainly with faster 4G internet. It dawned only when his friends enlightened him that these towers were harmful to their health; the radiations from these towers were cancer causing, would lead to disruption of eyesight in the long run

and affect the senior citizens by various cardiac health hazards. Then, along with his friend Wilbert D’Silva, Allan immediately informed Stephen Noronha, the Congress President of Block 40. Stephen then brought this to the notice of Asif Zakaria, Municipal Corporator of that area. Immediate action was taken by Asif & Stephen as a letter was filed to the BMC ward officer Tawde and Allan was then guided to conduct a signature campaign against these towers. Nrityanidhi; The Freedom To Every Soul Through Dance

Bandra

Dance is a medium to create a new world…a world of freedom… Shoma Kaikini, a Kathak dancer who began learning dance at the early age of 4, believes that the best way to express yourself is through dance. Having learnt Kathak and Bharatanatyam, she solemnly feels that ‘Dance is profusely effective if done from the heart’. “You don’t just tell a story to the audience by your dance but you take the audience along with you inside the story. You can connect your inner spirit to the inner spirit of the audience just by performing from your own inner spirit,” exclaims Shoma. In the past, when Shoma and her troupe have performed, viewers have often asked them one question - ‘What world was it that you dancers created?’ That is the power of dance and a traditional form like Kathak, which means to tell a Katha (story) definitely leads to creating an unimaginable world! Drama is not the actor crying but the audience crying… Similarly, dance is not the dancer performing but the audience flowing into the escapade of emotions. When you dance, you forget everything, all your worries, all your tensions and focus only on yourself. Shoma says, “We are so caught up with our lives that we focus on everything apart from ourselves. We make time for everyone but don’t know what to do with our own selves.” Dance is the time when you express yourself without bothering about the world. For when you dance, you just go with the flow and Kathak being an expressive form of dance, you tend to forget your whole being and enjoy every moment. Shoma expresses, “Through dance, you can communicate your feelings to the audience, you can make them laugh, and you can make them cry. And traditional dance forms have the power to create a unique magic that mesmerises everyone by its serenity.” However mediocre your art is, how great you are lies in what you are… Having travelled to Mumbai all by herself at the tender age of 19, Shoma was determined to follow her passion which was not just to dance but to ‘create better people through dance’. She quit her education half way in Bangalore and stepped in Mumbai with a dream to set up a dance institution where she could spread love and touch souls not just mere lives. “I never dreamt of being a great dancer but I just wanted to be a better person and create a world with better people around me,” admits Shoma. As a child, she always enjoyed dancing but never enjoyed the atmosphere of her dance classes or the teachers that she came across. It is then that she decided that she needs to create a healthy loving environment for beginners like her and also good

teachers. So, facing all financial odds, she set up her dance institution for girls named ‘Nrityanidhi’ in 2005 and today she has fulfilled both her aspirations of creating a healthy environment and being a good teacher herself. “I had always tried to fit in the crowd when I was young but later I realised that I am what I am and I am unique as a person with a special calling. Believing in myself, I chased my dream till I fulfilled it and things started falling in place,” exclaims Shoma. A home away from home… “Nrityanidhi is not a dance institution but it is a family and it is ‘OUR FAMILY’,” claims Aakruti, a student since 10 years. Shilpa, a student since 5 years, says, “It is the only dance class where you can come anytime, go anytime, dance anytime, anyhow and anywhere! There are no restrictions and we share a personal deep bond with each other.” At Nrityanidhi, with Shoma as the dance teacher, there is tremendous freedom and personal connection with every student. Shoma herself counsels every student and helps them in their personal, financial, professional and emotional issues. Sheetal, a student since 4 years, claims, “At Nrityanidhi, we believe in each other just because Shoma believes in us and thus, we have a strong support system. We are a family beyond blood relations.” We don’t teach how to dance; we teach how to live by changing your entire world and your inner self… Shoma takes in limited students for she aims to give personal attention to everyone. She knows her student as a person first then as a dancer. Often we are pressurised by burdens of life, tensed up with worries and lost in our own fast paced world and forget how beautiful and vast the world is. We are not happy in spite of possessing everything. Shoma believes, “Dance is an escape from these worries as it transcends you into another world where you are happy

and your spirit is lively. Kathak helps you to let go of everything that you have stored within you through dark experiences of life.” Our aim is not to create dancers but to make better people, to create an identity of yourself… Having won several awards for spell bound performances across the globe, Shoma has created her own style by amalgamating techniques of Kathak and Ballet and various other forms. The feel of the dance is the same be it Bollywood, Hollywood or Sufi. Nrityanidhi is the only institution in Mumbai that teaches the original form of Kathak and also experiments its techniques in other forms. It allows to expand the boundaries of Kathak by maintaining the ground principles yet tapping other styles. Sheetal expresses, “At Nrityanidhi, we learn the rules to break the rules.” Nrityanidhi also offers jobs to their students and financial support to start their own institution to spread the essence to other people who are wandering for fulfillment. Shoma says, “I don’t want to make my students like me, I want to make them better than me for each one is unique and has her own style, her own identity. I just want to help them discover and create that identity.”

Kathak is not a dance of the body but of the spirit… In this time of western dance forms like Hip Hop and Bollywood captivating the audience, traditional dance forms often seem difficult and boring for you and me. But, the fact is that classical forms like Kathak are comparatively easy and act as a stress buster as there are minute graceful movements and a leeway of expressions. ‘You feel it to dance it!’ Shoma says, “Western dance often demands you to turn and twist your body, but in classical dance you can just move your hands in a flow and feel it moving smoothly, and you have already done a step! Similarly, you move your eyes and smile, and you have already done an expression!” ‘Kathak defines Freedom’ or ‘Freedom defines Kathak’. Both stands true, as Shoma and her Nrityanidhi family aim to spread the love of traditional dancing with a higher vision of freeing souls from all bondage to become better human beings.

At a meeting held in CKP Hall, Linking Road, Khar on 7th Nov 2015, MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar spoke at length about his party’s achievements in the past one year (after winning the elections) - and his plans for Bandra, Khar & Santacruz, in the near future. Insights into the reality of local burning issues were incredible. The topics touched were: • Bandra Reclamation • Mahim Causeway Traffic Police Station • Bandra Railway Station • Hill Road Hawkers • Bandstand Promenade • Carter Promenade • Traffic Snarls At Lilavati – Carmels • Linking Road Hawkers - Malls • Patwardhan Park • Khar Station • Pali Pathar Slum • Mount Mary Steps Slum • Kadeshwari Slum • Vincent de Paul Footpath Slum • Gazdhar Bandh • Santa Cruz Pumping Station • Santa Cruz Station

• Sky Walks • Khar Police Station • Khar Subway • Milan Subway • Santa Cruz Police Station • Traffic at Podar School • Better Road Lighting • BMC Water Connections • Illegal Constructions

Ashish spoke briefly about updates in the Mumbai Police Act & Amendment in the Co-op. Societies Act. He mentioned that there were different opinions regarding the Bandra Fair, Coastal Road & Development Plan – and that he always saw that ‘Religious Harmony’ was incorporated in all that he does and plans. He stressed that illegal migrants are being tracked down & action taken against them – as this issue creates multiple problems. Recently, seven illegal migrants have been deported. Ashish emphasised that he has not part in the (slum) ‘vote-bank politics’. Ashish plans to get at least 70% of the issues resolved, before the next election. He explained how many of today’s burning issues were created or abetted in a time span of more than 15 years, by the ‘previous powers-that be’. So, certain issues need sufficient time to get resolved. He requested all present to work towards a better Bandra-Khar-Santacruz. Hemant Nair

Dear Reader, Mid November is action time for Bandra & surrounding suburbs. We have several reasons to be in and around Bandra. ‘Celebrate Bandra’, ‘Andrean Fair 2015’ – and the commencement of 400 years Celebrations of St. Andrew’s Parish are unique events that attract thousands from other parts of the city. Besides, Diwali celebrations are on – with a lot of gaiety in the air. With our bonus pay cheque coming in - shopping on Hill Road, Linking Road and their inner winding roads are at a peak. Yes, this is also the time when the powers-that-be need to introspect. With all the ‘non-sense’ going on at police stations, can citizens feel safe? With rising prices of essential commodities, can the common man / woman survive? With government bans mushrooming on every aspect of our lives – can we believe that we are living in the world’s largest democracy? The need of the hour is that all those in ‘position of power’ should realise that they were elected or promoted to be a ‘Bridge Over Troubled Waters’. Power should not go to their head – and create dictatorial situations. What is happening today is shameful – but there is hope. There is hope, when unbiased media informs, warns and builds bridges, where there are deep valleys. Bandra Buzz is your

CITIZENS LOSING FAITH IN POLICE I was shocked to see in the video, the police brutality of hitting the couple by the cops at the Andheri Police station. The group of police men continuously thrashing them with slaps and kicking, resulting in the boy bleeding and the girl screaming for help. The corrupt and inefficient police were caught red handed on the camera. This is evidence and strong proof to expose police brutality. Our inconstant and inefficient state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is silent and not uttering a single word of strong action against them. I strongly feel that if the law-abiding citizens get brutal treatment from the police, the democracy of our country is doomed. Since the people across the country, including city of Mumbai, have lost the faith in the corrupt police force - the urgent need of the hour is that all the cops who were involved in beating this couple must be booked for criminal offense and must be sacked from their respective job by the state chief Minster Devendra Fadnavis, with immediate effect. The day is not far off, when the people on the road will become aggressive towards police brutality - and will return them with thrashing. This will be a disaster and may lead to a ‘war’ between police and common-man on the road. Bhagwan Thadani

CAR BUSINESS ON THE STREETS St. Cyril Road and St. John Road has become a de-facto parking lot for derelict cars. Not only are junk cars parked here, but surprisingly, these junkers are moved ever so often in the dead of night, and replaced by others! It is funny to see different junkers ever so often in the mornings, parked outside every building on the street. On further inquiries, it was know that it is a business known as "Ganatra Automobiles" on Pali Naka that uses St. Cyril road for long term and short term parking of their junkers. An automobile business should not be allowed to park their inventory of junk cars on our public roads. As it is, we are harassed by Gym parkers, and "valet parking" of restaurants that use these streets as their parking lot. In this day and age of increased concerns of safety, it should be up to the police and appropriate authorities, to tow away these junkers immediately, and prevent such businesses from using public roads as their storage facility. The Doers of Carter Road

Bandra

We got walkers, joggers, talkers, lovers and many more soaking in the sunrise and sunset on Carter road, and then we got the members of Navjot Foundation, the term I would like to describe them with is “The Doers”. The foundation established in the year 1997 was the brainchild of retired army officer, G L Singh. After his demise the prerogative was taken up by Mrs. Mira Mamnani, a former RBI employee having dedicated 4 decades of her life at the prestigious institution. She is 72 years of age but does not look or think in the remotest way in comparison to people who belong to her age group.

just need to like studying, all we need is to sow a seed and then they are smart enough to learn and grow. All we do is encourage and support them in their endeavors.” Mrs. Mamnani shares her own childhood experiences and recollects studying and preparing for examinations under street lights. “It’s been a struggle, but the horizon does not end were it appears to, it all depends on how far your vision goes. And as long as this value is inculcated these, children will make it into a better place.” The children bring in their school books and get tutored by the various volunteers present; volunteers play a vital role for the foundation’s functionality. The children have a lot of books to choose from in case they want to practice a specify subject, be

from 5.30pm – 7pm, they have sessions every Saturday between 6pm – 7pm at the Kantwadi Municipal Garden as well. The foundation only accept donations in kind, they do not accept donation in cash or cheque payment. Apart from donations the foundation is always in need of volunteers who can devotee some time for this noble cause and can assist children and be a part of their growth. And growth is what you see through the end number of examples, Rahul Mohta a resident of Khar Danda has been learning with the foundation for the past 9 years and is currently pursuing his further studies at Rizvi college, he aspires

The foundation’s core mission is to, educate and guide underprivileged children, who are part of the municipal school structure. But what they really do is, love, inspire, shower them with affection and to a certain degree even pamper them, considering the day I meet the members, at 8:30am in the morning the children were all jumpy and beaming with joy after having had some ice cream. It’s Diwali so a little bonus is in order I suppose. However, this leeway was not seconded by Dr. Anil Chhabra, a volunteer who was there for the first time and was providing a routine checkup for the children. The age group of the children present for these extra classes is 5 – 15 years; the trustee Mrs. Mamnani says, “The children

it math, grammar, science or drawing and painting. Mrs. Mamnani’s car is like a mobile school which is stocked with books, notebooks, pencils, compass boxes etc. Many of these items are donated to them and they in turn distribute. Any child who comes to learn here is provided with notebooks, compass box and a school bag. Before they wind up at around 8.45 am, they are served breakfast, it’s just not knowledge that the foundation strives for they ensure that the health and nourishment factor is also addressed. There are around 250 children who benefit through the efforts of the foundation. The two venues where they function from is Carter road promenade every morning 7.30am – 9am and in the evenings

The growth is two ways because the volunteers also have many reasons to smile, Mr. Rafik a volunteer for the past 9 months is surrounded by children and warmly greeted as soon as he arrives and it’s this joy of giving back is what helps us grow as individuals. rights together as one community. For, together we can make a difference in society.” Allan exclaims, “My village is my family, I can and will always do anything if my village is in danger. I sincerely thank Stephen, Asif and the BMC for all the support.” Asif Zakaria, Municipal Corporator commented, “The residents should always be aware and vigilant about the happenings in their society. If the residents find anything wrong they should immediately inform the authorities so that required steps are taken. Only an application was made for these 4G towers but no permission was granted; there is difference in an application and permission and people should be aware of that.” A fearless, simple, senior citizen, Allan, uprooted the illegal acts of the elite Raj Kaushal in just 4 days. Surely, he has set an example for all of us by strongly beckoning one message- ‘Stand against wrong doing, don’t accept it silently and don’t ignore it either!’

On November 4, 2015, Allan went house to house explaining to the villagers about the harmful effects of these towers. He recollects, “I went walking to every house in the whole village. I am a heart patient and cannot exhaust myself too much but I couldn’t wait in peace until those harmful towers were removed. I had to do it for my village, for my people and for their future.” By the end of that day, Allan collected 67 signatures and submitted it to the political authorities to take action. On November 5, 2015, the BMC authorities along with Reliance officials demolished the towers. The BMC also disrupted the pipes that were dug on the road without permission. Moreover, Raj Kaushal had not informed the villagers about these towers at all. When we approached Raj Kaushal right at his residence he was reluctant to meet us in person though we were waiting for him. Moreover, he spoke to us over the phone when one of his workers called him and informed that we were waiting to meet him. Over the phone when we asked his perspective on the whole issue, he bluntly

said, “I have no comments, I have no perspective at all. ” Raj Kaushal also tried to negotiate and make Allan compromise by saying that these towers were not harmful and were installed in other places without any issue. But Allan claims, “If these towers were for the betterment of the villagers why didn’t Raj Kaushal inform us? Why was it installed without our consent? We have been living in the village for over 100 years and we have the right to know these aspects.” Allan was even threatened by the higher authorities for his daring stand against the elite. After the towers were demolished, Allan has not been allowed till date to enter that building without permission. Moreover, we want to bring to the notice of the BMC that the unearthed ends of the pipes are still on the ground in the building premises. ‘Bravery stands alone but Stands firm’ is what we learn from the senior citizen, Allan, who took this courageous step and saved lives in the coming future. Stephen Noronha urges, “We Catholics should forget all our indifferences and stand together against injustice. We should overcome our internal quarrels and fight for our

Is Diwali a Festival of Ligh

Bandra

Buzz > V

With the much awaited festive season of Diwali being celebrated with joy and excitement by every Indian, somewhere we notice the essence of Diwali being shifted. From a Festival of Light with diyas and lanterns all over the place, Diwali has now turned to become a festival of sound with loud crackers everywhere. Often we read reports on Should crackers be banned? Crackers are harmful to the environment, and so on…but there is more to Diwali and we at Bandra Buzz spoke to people from different backgrounds and got their insights on Diwali…

who makes more sound has more money and high stature in society. We need to rethink and ponder on the ideology of Diwali as its true meaning is lost. However, this year the crackers are less and pollution has reduced. People are aware of the increasing pollution and do not intend to harm the environment.” He always spends his Diwali out of Bombay to avoid the pollution but this year he has been in Mumbai and luckily the bursting of crackers is reduced. He says, “Firecrackers affect senior citizens the most and these seniors can’t do anything about it but silently bear the noise and sudden vibrations.”

Harish, a worker at the firecracker shop at Linking Road said, “This year the sales of firecrackers have been 20%, it is our first year and customers are coming in. The sale is not up to the mark but it is going on at a steady pace and we expect more during Diwali days. But crackers are selling and we have people coming constantly.”

Amar, a resident of Hill Road says, “Every year during Diwali, we give some donation and food to the poor kids at Carter Road through an NGO but this year the NGO didn’t respond. We are bursting fewer crackers this year. In the past years, during our time Diwali meant only crackers but nowadays with the whole eco friendly and pollution issue new laws have been coming in and we are abiding by it. Therefore, we are celebrating Diwali but with less crackers to avoid creation of pollution.” Austin D’mello, senior citizen residing at Pali, says, “From a Festival of Light Diwali has now become a Festival of Sound. People want to show their money and status by making louder sound than the rest. The one

Anika, mother of two, says, “Diwali is a time to cherish and strengthen bonds with family and friends and celebrate the joy of relationships together. Crackers are not the way to celebrate Diwali. My 4 year old kid never asks me for crackers as I have already told him about the ill effects. I have never bought crackers for him and he never even demands for it.” Mr and Mrs Patel, regular visitors at Carter Road, claim, “Diwali, this year, has witnessed more of sweets and celebrations. The noise of crackers is there but it is less compared to previous years. On the first day of Diwali, there were less crackers and we hope in the coming days of Diwali too there will be less noise and more of happiness.”

Anisha Fernandes, an animal lover, exclaims, “Crackers should be banned. There is not one thing good about crackers. They are harmful for kids, senior citizens, and for the environment on the whole. Moreover, animals are affected the most and the poor creatures can’t do anything about it.” Anisha has 3 cats as pets and is fond of animals more than humans. She says, “Due to bursting of crackers my pets are petrified, they run helter skelter looking for a place to hide away from the sound.” If that is the case of pets in her house then how worse will be the state of dogs and cats on the streets? She firmly believes that Diwali is a Festival of Lights but we have made it a Festival of Sound and money. We are burning money just to show off our wealth. And we don't seem to care at all about the environment or the ill effects of firecrackers!”

Rohit, a youth from Reclamation, says, “This year there are crackers but the number is gone down. May be people are a little concerned about the environment. But we need to demolish this practice of bursting crackers right from the roots itself; it is a menace to the society.”

Kimberly Pereira, a studying youth from Pali says, “During Diwali, we see crackers bursting in the sky and they look beautiful in the night. But this year the crackers on the ground have reduced and we find it just flying in the sky.

Muzaar, a rickshaw driver at Bandra says, “I usually drive in and around Bandra but during Diwali there is lot of traďŹƒc as people are out for shopping and the rush increases. However, in terms of crackers, this year there have been less crackers.â€?

So, with public testimonials portraying that the crackers have gone down during this Diwali, we all need to make an eort to celebrate the festival without causing any inconvenience to others. We agree that it is a celebration and festival of excitement so let

My son is a very strong minded 16 year old teenager. His bedroom is in the South East area of our home. How can I enhance this room for him? - R. K. Gupta Remove obstacles that keep the door to his room from opening in fully. As easy as it sounds, clearing items from behind the door has proven to be one of the simplest ways to increase the flow of prosperity and abundance in life. His room is indeed in the wealth and prosperity sector of your home. Clean away the clutter and all useless unwanted broken items that diminish vital energy surrounding him. I would sug-

gest you get his personality report done to help him analyse himself to manifest his goals and enhance the prosperity in his life. My daughter is in grade XII. This is a crucial year for her. She plans to go abroad for undergraduate studies. Please help. – Mrs. Mohini Shah I suggest you activate the Education Corner which lies in the Northeast of the Bagua grid. Get a compass, stand in the middle of the room, and find the NE area of your child’s study room or bedroom. Activate this corner with a Crystal Globe, which should be twirled clockwise daily. The NE is a Big Earth corner, and twirling a globe which represents Big Earth will activate the energies of this sector to bring scholarly luck to anyone pursuing their studies. My child aged 13 is a rebel. He is always on the edge & does not listen to me. His studies and academic grades are suffer. Please give me some tips. - Mrs. F. Apte As it is said…Terrible Teens…Hmm. Do consider looking at the windows of your home. In Feng Shui the main door is the mouth of the parent and the windows have been given the place of mouth of the child. If the windows of your home are too large as compared to the room size there

are many chances that you may have a rebellious child. Use heavy curtains to partially block off the large window area to bring about a good balance in the room. Or plant thick tall trees near the window to reduce the visual effect of the large windows. The south west relationship corner needs attention and you may hang a wind chime in your child's room. Also activate the west section with round shiny objects and artefacts. This is the sector for creativity and children and activating this section will bring about good concentration in studies, improved grades from your child and encourage creativity.
