Tyron Pereira The Rising Sportstar In a country where cricket has almost cult-like status, and where other games are usually sidelined, new heroes are silently emerging in these ‘lesser’ sports. Until not long ago, hockey was considered the country’s national sport, with India winning more Olympic golds in that event than any other till date. With India continuously showing improved performances on the international scene, and with the advent of the HIL, Indian hockey seems to be moving in the right direction. One such athlete silently excelling is local Bandra boy Tyron Pereira. Standing at 5’6, this 27 year old seems unassuming and shy, but once on the hockey pitch, this lad is transformed into a robust player, with an ingenious game. A versatile sportsperson since his school days, with a lot of hard work, perseverance and discipline, Tyron has

come a long way, now plying his trade with state-run Oil and Natural Gas Company (ONGC) in Delhi, where he captains the side, but he says the fruit of his efforts will be borne the day he gets to don the Indian colours. Studying in St. Andrew’s School, Tyron played for his school football, hockey and basketball teams, and almost landed up pursuing basketball, but after weighing the pros and cons decided to go with hockey. Spotting his outstanding talent then, Hockey Bandra, a local team gave him the exposure to a more advanced level of hockey, and there’s been no looking back since. A protÊgÊ of Joaquim Carvalho, former Indian hockey player, coach and Arjuna Awardee, Tyron picked up the ropes of the game and in 2006, when he was just 16, got himself a call to play with Indian Oil. SPORTS CONTD FROM PAGE 1 Four years later, he moved to Air India for a six month stint where his outstanding performance landed him a posting with his current employer ONGC. In 2012, Tyron was drafted into the Pune Strykers squad for the lucrative World Series Hockey (WSH) league, where he scored in the finals of the tournament, although his team ended second best. Notably, he was the most played player of his team, sitting on the bench for just three minutes throughout the tournament. Such was his influence on the team’s performance. This right midfielder lays special emphasis on discipline. “Discipline is essential to succeed; besides the right attitude and respect. He says, “It’s easy to have the wrong attitude when you think you’re the best, but with that attitude you cannot succeed. It’s necessary to keep practising, keep your focus, and more importantly, keep your head on shoulders.” Earlier in January this year, Tyron was bagged in the HIL auction by Dabang Mumbai for a sum of $3000. Playing alongside Belgian expert Tom Boon, Glenn Turner and the like, Tyron was yet again an invaluable asset to his team. When asked what the Indian team lacks when it comes to winning con-

sistently on the international scene, Tyron says that technology is the biggest differentiating factor, and not fitness. “Indians have the fitness, but most of the time it’s the finer aspects of the game that cost us. The foreign coaches are able to help us with that, and these tiny bits of advice are invaluable,” he says, citing the incident where he tackled Aussie ace Jamie Dwyer, and the next instant got retackled. More recently, this Rizvi graduate captained the Mumbai outfit at the Senior National level tournament held in Pune last month where he helped It’s easy to have the wrong attitude when you think you’re the best, but his team qualify for the National Games to be held in Goa next with that attitude you cannot succeed. His mother has been his constant support throughout, and even though she passed away a few years ago, his fondness for her is evident from the fact that whenever he scores a goal, she is the first person he remembers. With his consistent performances in tournaments across the country, it shouldn’t be long for another Bandra boy to represent the nation and we hope it happens soon. Letters to the Editor SALMAN’S INTERIM BAIL The law will eventually catch up with him. For God’s sake... a crime has been committed. There is a process of law that has to follow. This is not the end of the saga. Look at the larger picture. What a precedent this will set! Vivek Sylva Saviour of those 'with millions' in their pocket. Remember Adv. Harish Salve you will never be able to fight your own final judgement, even with all your millions. Annabelle Josephine

is shown as a Public Hall; Bombay National History Society is marked as “Other Medical Facility” and plenty more incongruities! All the proposed road widening defeats the purpose for what it is planned, hence status quo to be maintained and the DP 2034 should be scrapped! Else, this would lead to theft, loot , rape and murder of Senior Citizens and lack of privacy… as all the homes will become an OPEN HOUSE! Jimmy Fernandes

REVISED DEVELOPMENT PLAN Following mounting protests, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra subsequently announced that the DP 2034 was being “scrapped.” This was a misnomer however, as the DP 2034, four years in the making, is not being discarded but rather being revised and reworked to correct errors in the ELU (Existing Land Use) maps and incorporate suggestions in the PLU (Proposed Land Use). The BMC has been given four months to come up with a revised DP, which will presumably be put out for public comment again later in the year. Parishioners are advised to remain alert and be ready to scrutinize the revised DP, to make sure that any revised proposals take into account the interests and opinions of those who will be affected. BANDSTAND PROMENADE Please note that our promenade is in a precarious situation as parts of it have been totally eroded by the sea. We had taken up the matter (courtesy MP Ms Priya Dutt) with Maharashtra Maritime Board 2 years ago, when they had kindly accepted to take up this nearly Rs 2 crores project. Subsequently the project was stuck up in various tendering / finalization stages since nearly a year and it was only through the good offices of the MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar, that the project got a green light. Finally the Bhoomi Pujan is taking place and the project will begin immediately so that the bulk of the work can be completed before the onslaught of the next monsoons. Mr P.K. Das, activist and renowned architect, has made a modern step-like embankment designs for the promenade which we have requested MMB to follow. Robin Nath

Better planning and money could have been saved by erudite planners and not a lackadaisical approach on the Planning Board. For example, DP Plans show Jehangir Art Gallery as Vet Hospital; St Thomas Cathedral is shown as a Commercial – Residential area; Prince of Wales Museum is shown as part recreational ground; St Andrews Church, Kala Ghoda

CORRECTIONS In our ‘Just Dump This DP’ report, dated April 2015, page 13; 3rd para – kindly read it is as ‘government sanad’ instead of BMC sanad. In the 4th line of the first para, kindly add ‘Secretary, The Salsette Catholic Co-operative Housing Society / Bandra Gym. Jt. Hon. Gen. Secretary’. Sorry, for the error.

Our Encompassing Environment Dear Readers, May is the time when vibrant colours come alive all around us. Our tree-lined roads are a riot of multiple hues and shades that help us (mentally) beat the heat – with that fresh feeling of wellness. Bandra has her fair share of shady (no pun intended) roads, that create wonderful walking experiences. Will these green ‘oases’ of natural surroundings survive the onslaught of urban development? Our active ALMs, the BMC and our local activists are not leaving any stone unturned to create awareness about keeping Bandra and surrounding areas clean and green. Our mangroves must be safeguarded. Our open spaces need more plants. More roads need to be lined with trees. Waste Segregation needs to be implemented on a war footing. Car-Sharing needs to be promoted. Organic farming can promote better health and vitality. Development Plans that destroy natural surroundings should be stopped. If we want to see climatic change in our cities, our attitude of awareness should show with our actions. Think green. Eat only natural. Save our precious planet. It is the only one that we have on World Environment Day – Friday, June 5th 2015, an awareness programme will be held at the Carter Promenade, Bandra - from 5pm onwards. Here, you can expect to hobnob with celebrities and commoners who are helping make a difference to our world environment. Remembers, when we defy nature, the results are devastating; like the recent Nepal earthquakes and Tsunamis of yesteryears. . Bandra Buzz is evolving to newer levels, to get you all the information you need for better understanding the situation around you; in various aspects of your life. Your active support is the driving force behind this publication. Do use this platform to highlight local talent, entrepreneurs and historical info; that needs to be preserved for posterity. We are using technology, along with your co-operation; for ensuring community connect and social upliftment. An informed person can make wiser decisions – and Bandra Buzz is there at the forefront with local news, views & reviews; that you can use. Let’s make the most of the clear blue summer skies to increase our outreach – in all areas of our life and realize how all-encompassing is our environment. Till next time, take care.

Skills for Life composer of our era. Now if it was sheer luck or destiny that they got involved and intertwined in the disciplines that they mastered is another story all together. However what we can conclude is that intelligence and perspectives are diverse and intricate in the case of every child. As Einstein was quoted “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” The next question that comes to our mind is how can it be deciphered what a child is most inclined towards?. The FasTracKids Enrichment Program from United States of America follows Harvard Gardner’s School of Thought that is based around the notion that intelligence is not constant for all, there are 8 different kinds of intelligence patterns and based on these levels it is possible to narrow down the child’s strengths and inklings. When a child displays better grasping power while listening to a story, it indicates that the

FasTrackids conducting experiments on alkalis and acids and learning about the chemical reaction that takes place during digestion.

Little chefs performing in the Helen O’ Grady International Annual Production play “The Chef’s Magic Masala” child is a linguistic learner, similar activities are conducted to conclude the child’s preferred way to process & store information. Along with other methodologies such as Socrates and Montessori and their own method called Educational ZigZagging. The FasTracKids Enrichment Program aims to enhance the child’s confidence, ability to communicate and skills to collaborate as well as enables them to think critically & creatively. These sessions are conducted throughout the year & a student can join at the beginning of each module. The modules & curriculum is sent from the headquarters in the USA. (There are 400 centres worldwide and FasTracKids brings about a change in Early childhood education in 56 countries.) The Helen O’ Grady Speech & Drama Academy from Australia established in 1979 in Australia encourages enthusiasm & energy level in the child, imbibes a positivity and self-esteem, lastly but very critical for a young child, sharpens their verbal communication and social interaction skills. It is important to be able to express ones feeling and voice our opinions confidently. If it can be a challenge for adults to overcome these fears at times, it is safe to

say that it is no child’s play!!. Shy and timid toddlers may need a little direction and motivation to shed behind their inhibitions. The Helen O’Grady Speech & Drama Academy has been helping kids and adults alike to discover and showcase the performer within. Children can join these classes at any point in time since the syllabus is progressive in nature is constant updates are provided from the academy head. The Helen O’Grady Academy is active in more than 30 countries worldwide and more than 50 cities in India. On quizzing Ms Mamta Shah, Director at KidsVitaEductation about the preschools mission and belief she responds “We focus on teaching the children how to comprehend and not memorize by teaching them HOW to think, NOT WHAT to think. The school’s logo is “A good beginning never ends!”, therefore the school provides and facilitates programs which not only helps the child’s present but also their future by equipping them with essential life skills.” Sidhant Nayangara Call : 02226612004 / 8879445083 www.kidsvitaedustation.in Facebook/kidsvitaEdusation

It’s a wonderful experience to be a parent, the joy of hearing your child laugh, watching them take their first steps and that sense of belonging when they call out to you. Parenthood has its fair and equal share of responsibilities and critical decision that need to be made for the child’s best interest. Therefore to reduce the gap of the parent’s wants and at the same time tapping into the child’s potential, KidsVita Education have two unique programs that focuses on fulfilling the child’s growth requirement and channelizing their potential and capabilities to the maximum. Ever wondered what were to be the outcome if Albert Einstein’s parents had forced him to be a devote pianist or if Wolfgang Mozart’s parents enrolled him in an astrology institute to star gaze and learn about our neighbouring planets. They may or may not have been good at what was expected of them, but most importantly we would have probably lost one of the best scientist and music

22 schools celebrated Maharashtra Divas 54th Maharashtra Day was celebrated with students of 21 schools at St. Andrew’s School grounds on 1st May. These schools belonged to the Bandra Inter-School Republic Day Committee. The presentations from these schools brought out the rich history of the state through dance, rendition of Marathi songs and enactment of various Maharashtrian festivals and the plight of the farmers. The Navy was invited to introduce students to the Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji who propelled the great Maratha force. Our Chief Guest at this event was Commodore N. N. Rao who hoisted the tri-colour flag from the terrace of St. Andrew’s School with the National Anthem being sung by the gathering. Other navy personnel were present to highlight the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji played in the formation of the naval forces in India. Principals of the 22 BIRD schools were also present although it was Open Day at their schools. The heat did not deter the students and the gathering from enjoying this patriotic event. Each performance was enthralling and brought out the message of ‘Gaurav Maharashtracha’. Our MLA Mr. Ashish Shelar garlanded the bust of Chhatrapati Shivaji. The speech by Commander Mohan Narayan (Retd) Chief of Naval History, explained to us how Shivaji’s General, Kanhoji Angre played a decisive role in fighting the Mughals and the British invaders. Fr. Jude Fernandes S.J. addressed the gathering, high-

lighting how the BIRD Committee had worked together in sowing the seeds of patriotism. As a finale to this event we had the Navy Bugler blow the bugle as a mark of respect to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the formation of Maharashtra. Fr Jude Fernandes S.J.

‘Marathi Mulgi’s’ unique celebration of Maharashtra Day On 1st May 2015, the Parish Community of St. Andrew’s Church, as part of their 400 years celebrations, invited me to speak on Maharashtra. I felt that a Quiz Competition would be much more interesting than a boring speech. And… the interaction was interesting. Ten groups were formed. They had to answer the submitted questions in 15 minutes. I was happy and proud that most of the groups got more than 75% correct. Wearing a traditional nine yard sari with green bangles, a ‘rath’ and ‘gajra’; made me feel like a proud Maharashtrian. I

am thankful to the organizers for arranging such a unique way of celebrating ‘Maharashtra Day’. Many of us are not aware that the maximum number of social reformers, come from our state. Starting with Vinoba Bhave, Baba Amte, Gokhale, Ranade, Jyotiba Phule, etc. – are some reformers we all know. However, few know that Savitribai Phule fought for women’s Reforms long before it was thought of by others. That is why it is “Jai Maharashtra”. Shyama Kulkarni

‘Studio Perfecta’ now ‘Eats & Treats’ For the last 30 years now, Studio Perfecta has been a famous landmark on the iconic Hill Road. This studio has seen the evolution of photography, right from the blackand-white images on paper then to digital colour photography today. While today almost everyone can take high resolution pictures with a touch on their phone screen, back then the story was much different. From dishing out instant photographs at the annual Bandra fair for a single rupee to gaining front row access at fashion shows to capture the right shot, Mike, owner of this longevous studio has seen it all. It all started as an electrical works shop back then in the day 58 years ago. Bandra Electrical Works as it was called provided expertise in all kinds of electrics and circuits. Later, it expanded to house sports equipment, toys and seasonal decorations. All long-time Bandraites will surely remember Tony Electricals and General Stores as the first and only toy shop then, standing on the verge of Hill Road. Coming back to what it is today, Mike, this third generation entrepreneur, along with his wife Louella, have now set up Eats and Treats, alongside their photo studio. As the name suggests, this take-away joint provides a quick bite to all; with eats like rolls, burgers, croissants, puffs and the like to tingle your taste buds. Besides, delicious pastries are also on the menu for those with a sweet tooth. And although it opened shop only earlier this month, this new outlet has already attracted plenty of customers.

The newly opened Eats and Treats on Hill Road offers Rolls, Burgers, Croissants, Puffs, etc. at affordable prices

While some are locals who are amazed at the transformation of this Hill Road landmark, others include shoppers, students, or just someone stopping by to grab a quick bite. But what is conspicuous is the fact that the eats are highly relished. And while Eats and Treats makes you want to eat your heart out, Studio Perfecta stands testimony to the bustling Hill Road. Please let me know my compatibility analysis with her.– Kyle D’sa

Your relationship with her is at -60. She drains you to a large extent. But you are very good for her and you support her. Since both personalities also differ as well as the relationship quotient is in the negative; if you both marry, you need to bear in mind that you both need to nurture this relationship with utmost care. Avoid confrontations and disagreements at all costs. She needs you to support her and it is your love and programming that will shape her future to a large extent. Maria, I have been reading your articles in Bandra Buzz with much interest. I find your replies easy to understand and implement. Thank you for this column. I have recruited a new personal assistant who handles alot of my confidential business details too. His DOB is 1.11.84 and my DOB is 26.10.53. -Aslam Khan Thank you for your kind words. The most interesting part is that it is a +80 quotient but personalities differ. He is of metal element. While you are very productive for him (earth produces metal); he may drain you off slowly. So, if ego hassles are taken care of; this relationship is very lasting. He will actually hold on to you when you need him the most. You should consider trusting him. Is Salman Khan’s Interim Bail Justified? With this verdict, he has managed to dodge jail time; while thousands of poor under trials are wasting away behind bars in India a country which proudly claims to be the world’s largest democracy Recently, film star Salman Khan, convicted by the Sessions Court for the infamous 2002 hit-and-run case in Bandra, was sentenced to five years of imprisonment. Within 72 hours of the conviction, coming 13 years after the crime was committed, the Bombay High Court granted the actor an interim bail. The court suspended the sentence pending the hearing of appeal. This judicial decision to grant an interim bail has raised several disturbing questions: - Is justice only for the rich? – Are we so star struck, as to get blinded to the truth? … or has crores of rupees exchanged hands? First, let’s consider the inordinate delay that has taken place in delivering the first sentence. And then, just when it seemed that justice was done at last, there followed ‘relief’ from the High Court for the convicted actor. The granting of bail does indeed seem to make a mockery of the justice system. A man responsible for the death of another, however unintentional, cannot go unpunished. Neither can he escape the prison dragnet. Moreover, the accident

committed by Salman in an inebriated state, ruined the lives of four other poor families. They deserve justice. The judicial system as it operates, and as it is exemplified rather blatantly in the case of Salman, seems — inexplicably — to deny justice to the victims. The debate over the Salman case has become a fierce talking point — and with good reason. Under the pretext of fairness, the film star with his attendant celebrity status and the money power that enables him to engage ‘super-smart’ lawyers at great cost, has managed to wriggle out of the judicial noose. The anger and rage such unbridled access to privilege and influence — and consequently immunity — evokes is understandable. And justified as well. However, we need to distinguish between the loopholes in the judicial system and the particular case of Salman Khan, the popular and rich actor. Even though both

feed into each other, it is a matter of judicial principle that bail is the rule and the accused must be given a fair chance to prove his or her innocence. It is this principle that rules the process of appeals which is protracted, stretching into years, and even decades. In order to be fair, the judicial system seems to provide an escape route to the accused, and helps him or her evade punishment as long as it is possible by resorting to all the judicial procedures of appeal in the name of fairness. However, in this prolonged judicial exercise, the real sufferer — most often — is not the accused but the victim of the crime. In the Salman Khan case, it is the family of the man that Salman killed and others he injured who have been left to fend for themselves, without relief and justice. Thousands of other victims’ families are lost in the judicial maze. The ends of law are defeated by these very judicial

processes that are meant to deliver justice: an ideal Kafkaesque metaphor of the absurdity of the system. But there is also another disturbing dimension to the judicial system. Most often, the system is weighted in favour of those with money and powerful connections. For instance, while Salman has managed to dodge jail time, thousands of poor under trials are wasting away behind bars. The absence of money and resources deny them even the initiation of processes of justice. The clash of opinions around the Salman case provides us now with an opportunity to critically examine the structures and the imperfect workings of the judicial system. This is a debate that has been put on the backburner for far too long. Rather than allowing the debate to taper off — like such debates often do — we must ensure a critical discourse around the judiciary. And restore faith in the institution which is often the only recourse left to the majority of people. Bhagwan Thadani
