"Cops on Bikes" gets new meaning If you find yourself cycling at Bandstand at 6.30am and do happen to see a policeman on a bicycle riding along side you, don't be confused. He has not joined the ranks of many of our Health & Fitness conscious residents. Policemen patrolling on bicycles is a new initiative of the police to make the police more approachable and keep a police presence in areas not accessible by jeeps and motorbikes. Bandra Buzz was informed by a policeman that two cycles have been allotted to Bandra and Khar respectively, operating in two shifts, the first starting from 6am to 2pm and the second from 2pm to 10pm. The officers patrolling on bicycle are here to address any issue faced by citizens. They are given distinct patrol zones to keep a vigil. Speaking to Mr. Faisal Thakur of 'Pro 9

Bicycle Studio' (Carter Road), we learnt that the Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order), Mr. Deven Bharti had called him over to discuss the project. He (Mr. Bharti) wanted the bicycles to be visible and loud in a tasteful manner to hold attitude and keep the riders spirits high. He further stated that this form of patrolling allows the policemen to be closer to the civilians, the officers were provided with walkie talkies to radio in for support and a collapsible baton, should the need arise. He further told us that they had constructed two types of bikes, beach bikes with 7 gears and thicker tyres for maximum performance on beach terrain. Wayne Lemos TURN TO PAGE 10 >>

OUTREACH

THE WOMAN WHO MAKES DREAMS COME TRUE The thought, is she real!? crossed my mind several times. Looking at her last evening, I wonder again: is this woman real? She has, meanwhile, burst into an old request number: Isn't this a lovely day? Yes it is a lovely day…lovely day…am I glad you came my way, Yes came my way, Oh you sweet ones, oh you dear ones… Songs mingle with stories as we listen to her with rising incredulity. “Did I tell you that I was born on a running train?” says the Lifeline lady confirming her railroad connection...“on my passport Gangapur in Rajasthan is recorded as my birthplace. It was on the train from Mumbai to Delhi that mom gave birth to me…”. The Tata’s had specially built a bus with medical equipment for IMPACT India foundation before the train happened. What is incredible is how she invited a visiting US doctor to travel on that bus to the distant Himalayas! During that very trip the makeshift medical team, the US doctor and Zelma saved a dying boy. Coincident? Could be. A miracle? Perhaps…the experience of saving a life was to start the first chapter of an inspiring journey. How she spearheaded the creation of outreach services of basic health care to the disabled in remote parts of our country. “I was in Delhi to catch my flight back. But the idea of the train, a hospital on wheels haunted me…and naturally the man I most wanted to meet was our Railway minister. Mind, I had no appointment and the Minister’s secretary tried his best to shoo me away" she recalls with a grin. The man had obviously not realized she is made of sterner stuff! Not only did she meet Railway Minister George Fernandes but had the temerity to demand: “I want a train!!” as simply as one asks for a glass of water.

)5(( '$< 75,$/ $XWRPDWLF &ORWKHV 'U\LQJ 5DFN

“A train? What for…” asked the amazed Minister. However, as he had noticed the steely determination beneath her elegant charm, he heard her out. Sharing her concern for the disabled she had gathered an audience on the spot. Her audience that day included the Editor of London Times whose report titled "THE LITTLE GIRL AND THE TRAIN" sent out the implausible story of an Indian woman’s dream for the medical train….and hey Presto, the train chugged in. Slowly but surely, she had her train – to be known as Lifeline Express. From July 1991 the LIFELINE EXPRESS has surgically restored mobility, sight, hearing and corrected clefts. It has completed 163 projects with over one lakh fifty thousand medical volunteers from the world over. Truly a staggering figure. One expects nothing less from this visionary, this mover and shaker whose well deserved achievements can fill several hefty volumes. From being the Chief PR of Voltas India, CEO of IMPACT India foundation, a

world speaker at the UN, she wears many hats with the serene humility of a Saint. “We are not here to give you a cheque and then say goodbye. We want to make sure the project takes off!!” She remembers hearing J.R.D. Tata tell an overseas benefactor. Like Tata, the visionary Indian, she too believes in a prudent philosophy. That making a public agenda of service into a personal mission is the key to its success.

Her motto stick your neck out explains the facility with which she dreams and carries on the work tirelessly. “Let them believe it is their project not yours and the rest is easy.”, she adds. Next minute I find her playing the gracious hostess to perfection. Plying us with food and affection. Her life’s journey has covered more tracks than one can count. She has transformed into a familiar figure supporting numerous with her healing touch. IMPACT India Foundation continues to aid the disabled effectively fighting treatable diseases across many parts of the world Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, South Africa, even in China. Our very special friend, Zelma Lazarus, larger than life, is a miracle worker in an age when miracles have ceased to happen! Gifted with humility with generosity her dedication can shame those without dreams, reciting empty words, or emptier promises. And yes, despite these outstanding human qualities and a touch of discreet divinity, she is, real. That is the miracle!

Will CM Fadnavis Take Forward Shyama’s Environment Memoranda? MP Poonam: He missed a good show – but he will support your good thoughts On a clear Friday early evening, Carter Promenade was bustling with activity. The amphitheatre near CCDs was turned into a hi-tech area with whizzing screens, projected lighting and other gizmos – thanks to the organization skills of the Bhamla Foundation team, lead by the pro-active Meraj Husain. Film & Political personalities added glamour to the event – which was essentially an awareness programme, where eminent environmentalist and others knowledgeable on this social topic, spoke their hearts out. Indeed, it was the best platform & location ambience for all things ‘environment’. Conservation Architect David Cardoz started by saying it should be World Environment Day – EVERYDAY. He elaborated,“The Conservation Architectural Movement started for the conservation of our planet and the environment. That’s what we need to understand. We can make another building. It is very difficult to make another ocean, another hill or tree. It takes minutes to cut it down, but it takes years of nurturing to make it grow. I am glad we are here at this wonderful space - Carter Road, because we have different pressures and needs which point towards a coastal road, under the issue of development. I do hope we take cognizance of the fact that

we live in a place where if we cut off we cannot get back what is destroyed. My message,‘ I do hope we take the right decisions and see that whatever is put inside, helps us to

grow and really develop.’ I thank the Bhamla Foundation for having me here.” TURN TO PAGE  10 >>

ENCOURAGING ECO-FRIENDLY ENDEAVOURS Dear Readers, June just glides into our lives with the welcome pitter patter of raindrops. The intense May heat is lessened when it rains, especially when it pours. As I look out of my window, the morning sky is overcast with dark clouds, while the rising sun is trying to play hide-nseek. Bandra is even more beautiful at this time of the year – parks get greener, promenades cooler and a week after the first rains, the air is much more pure. However, our actions are destroying the eco-balance that creates an ideal environment. Just by separating our waste and using the organic compost for a home garden, we can help in our own little way. Just by saving water & electricity at home, the carbon footprint can be improved. Just by using public transport or cycling / walking, pollution is reduced. Wherever possible, solar energy can replace regular electric supply. Collectively, we can make a difference. A growing number of Bandra, Khar & Santacruz residents have already started doing these little acts - that are helping our environment. We need many more to be aware, so that we can save the only planet we have. Let’s GO GREEN. Today – ORGANIC is the buzzword. With toxic chemicals in our food, air & water ruining our well-being, it is imperative to go the organic way. We need to use non-chemical solutions to resolve our health issues. The initial cost may be higher, but in the long run, there are multiple benefits. Challenge yourself to change your lifestyle, for a better tomorrow. This monsoon, keep your immune system strong, the natural way – to fight bacterial infections and other water-borne diseases. We will soon be having interesting info on this topic in upcoming issues. We, at Bandra Buzz are evolving – keeping in mind local needs. Your favourite neighbourhood newspaper needs your interaction to get good info across to those who matter. Only then can we resolve issues. Do use this local platform to highlight happenings, issues, etc. in your area – anything that is newsworthy. Till next time, take care.

Warm Regards, Merck N. D’Silva Editor-in-chief 9820783616

Letters to the Editor ENVIRONMENT QUIZ 2015 The Bandra Environment Quiz 2015 compiled by Darryl D’Monte in your esteemed paper last month, had some superb ‘wrong options’. These were very cleverly worded, to puzzle even ardent & knowledgeable Bandraites. Jasveer Moniz EPIDEMIC AT KADESHWARI – THIS MONSOON? The BMC should look into the public hygiene of Kadeshwari Mandir Road, next to Ganesh Mandir Chowk, Bandra West. Moreover, the water drains too are not been cleaned. Only God can save the people of Kadeshwari from an epidemic. Very soon there will be an epidemic of malaria, dengue and other water borne diseases. With the monsoon, the situation could go beyond control – spreading to other parts of Bandra and beyond. So, action should be taken NOW, to clear the huge rotting garbage dumps, not removed for weeks. I will file a criminal case against all the responsible officers including the Municipal Commissioner for dereliction of duty and negligence. I publicly request our elected representative Councillor Karen D’Mello to solve Kadeshwari’s severe garbage problem or in the alternative, resign and give other deserving candidates a chance of serving the people of Bandra. Adv. Shane Cardoz BANDRA RECLAMATION SLUMS Bandra Reclamation remains the same, after some post-election demolitions. Now, there are more nude children on the road, than ever before. Green flags, mutton shops, even a mosque has appeared. Bikes are parked next to the settlement and autos fill the entire reclamation ground. The topping is that hooligans walk on the road and threaten you! Vehicles can hardly ply on the road. Mr. Shelar - is this a case of “ache din” or “bure din” for Bandra. Why don't you shift them to Govandi or Mankhurd or elsewhere. This menace is growing exponentially - and if not controlled will be worse than an epidemic. Sharad Rochlaney

I remember when Poonam Mahajan had won the MP elections - and a dinner was organised at the Rang Sharda, Mr. Piyush Goyal said, “Vote for Ashish Shelar, because if he wins - we will remove the slums from Bandra Reclamation.” All bull talks - the place is now worse than ‘s*** street’. That should be the new name - actually. BJP, hope you guys open your eyes and start doing something about it. Glen Waller ADULTERATION RACKET With the steady rise in the price of many essential articles, adulteration racket in the city of Mumbai has been growing. Various ingenious and dirty methods are being employed for the adulteration of milk, pulses and cereals, tea etc. Any article which is in demand and sells at a high price, is adulterated. Adulteration has indeed become a ‘Make In India’ activity. Adulteration takes place in dingy hide outs. It looks like the racketeers have made a good study of the business. They are adept at choosing the right ingredient which makes it impossible for the consumer — make out whether adulteration has taken place. What is a matter of concern is that some of the substances added may not be good for health. The adulterators have no scruples and even if a substance poses danger to health, they will use it. Milk is the favourite choice of the criminals. The price of milk keeps rising and the government steps in sometimes and fixes prices. Milk has become the first choice for adulteration because it is just about adding water — water from any source will do. Water from taps is mercifully usually used. The culprits are not bothered about being caught. Once in a blue moon, a minister undertakes some raids accompanied by FDA officials and catches red-handed some culprits. There is some excitement for a while but very soon it all dies down and for the adulteration racket, it is business as usual without any serious action from the government. Bhagwan Thadani

St. Stanislaus High School appoints its first Non-Jesuit woman Principal: Anna Correa For the very first time, the 152 year old legendary institution, St. Stanislaus High School, Bandra - will have a Non-Jesuit Woman Principal: Anna Correa, who previously worked as the School Supervisor. Anna Correa started her inspiring career at St. Stanislaus in the year 1988 and has continued to be a beacon of success for the school. She worked with four very renowned Jesuit Principals: Fr. Joe D'Abreo, Fr. Edmund Carrasco, Fr. Lawrie Ferrao & Fr. Jude Fernandes. Fr. Jude, the previous school Principal, feels that a non-Jesuit Principal for the first time in St. Stanislaus will benefit the school. He was the principal for eight years – and will now take over the reins at St. Mary’s, Mazagaon. With 27 years of teaching experience under her belt, she has been receiving congratulatory messages from her ex-students from all over the world; many of whom have expressed their wish to return back to school. St. Stanislaus boasts of a strong PTA and alumni association, SSESA, who have expressed their support. Fr. Francis Swamy, chairman of the Jesuit School Board, which has over 30

schools in and around the city, said they were looking to collaborate with non-Jesuits, owing to the lack of personnel. 'We want this collaboration, so that non-Jesuits who have been part of our institutions feel equal. Some have worked for over 30 years and we have a lot to learn from them!' Among the various other schooling institutions which have non-Jesuit Principals, are Campion School and St. Xavier's High School, Fort. St. Mary's School (SSC) had attempted to incorporate a non-Jesuit Principal but switched back. Fr. Swamy endorses the excellent job the Principals have been doing - and schools like Campion are proved examples of constant dynamic work. He also expects the same from St. Stanislaus. We at the Bandra Buzz team are assured, confident and supremely positive that Mrs. Anna Correa will remain the steadfast and truly successful 'Principal of Principles!' at St. Stanislaus High School. We wish you our wholehearted congratulations, Mrs. Anna, with every laudable blessing to you for each year ahead! Anushka Dutt

EAT OUT

BANDRABUZZ

Sitting pretty on the verge of Hill Road, it’s hard to miss The Sassy Spoon. But far from the hustle and bustle of the busy street outside, this elegant-yet-casual restaurant greets you with a vibrant yet subtle display of colour as you enter, which has an instant calming effect on your senses. Bandra sees reassurance for women facing Domestic Violence in Dilaasa ‘Dilaasa’ are the pioneers in India, offering assistance to women facing domestic violence. Dilaasa had established guidelines for healthcare, long before the law on domestic violence came into existence in 2005- 2006; located at Bhabha Hospital, Department 101, Bandra (West). Dilaasa offers victims that enter its doors, unconditional support to talk to and validation of their thoughts, operating on a feminist counseling principal, under strict confidentiality. Dilaasa is a department of Bhabha Hospital, a joint initiative of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and CEHAT (a non-profit organisation which has been working on the issue of public health for over twenty years). With doctors as stake holders, stress is put on compulsory treatment for abused women, both medical and psychological - and the victims are further referred for counseling. Dilassa's counselling centres offer group support too and also provide suicide prevention counseling. Recognised for the 'best practiced

model by the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) and also getting recognition from the FVPF (Family Violence Prevention Fund), Dilaasa also features in Aamir Khan's 'Satyamev Jayate' for the work they do with regards to domestic and sexual violence and have been visited by the likes Aishwarya Rai with UN AIDS and Aamir Khan. Dilaasa believes that a women's first visit to them could also be her last, and that is something they take very seriously. Hence do their very best to assist her in every way they can, making every moment count - with a majority of the women that come to their doors being in the age bracket of sixteen to forty years (the approximate reproductive cycle of women). Women can be referred to various protection officers appointed by the government, as of 2005; with the DIR (Domestic Incident Report). 70 % of cases get referred to from health systems like OPD's, wards and the doctors of various hospitals and the remaining others are generally from IEC

material like pamphlets and posters. Women that come to Dilaasa are spoken to and educated in things like the 'Cycle of Violence', where the husband will get abusive, then tries to make up by being nice and then gets abusive again, this pattern continuing till he ultimately drops trying to make up for his abusive behavior and is only abusive and 'Spiral Violence' which is where a woman may suffer abuse in her matrimonial home, which is worsened if she receives no support from her maternal family. Dilaasa also speaks to women about legalities in the matter of domestic violence, the filing of a NC, a Medico Legal Case paper, etc. All services provided by Dilaasa are free, with two main centres at Bhabha Hospital at Bandra and Kurla respectively, with eleven more centres planned in the pipe line. At present Dilaasa has a five core group of Hospitals - Bhabha Hospital (Bandra), Bhabha Hospital (Kurla), MT Agarwal Hospital (Mulund), Cooper Hospital, Rajawadi

Hospital (Ghatkopar). Dilaasa, Department No. 101 K.B. Bhabha Municipal Hospital, Bandra West, Mumbai - 400050 Phone: 022- 26400229 (Direct) 022- 26422775/266422541 Ext. 4376,4511 Timings: 9.00a.m. to 4.00p.n. (Mon - Fri) 9.00a.m. to 12.00 noon Saturday Wayne Lemos

>> CONTD FROM PAGE 03 Social Activist Shyama Kulkarni shared her thoughts, amidst slight showers - saying,“ Maybe, Bhamla Foundation made the first rains possible in Mumbai. What a wonderful function. We need to save the environment 365 days of the year. Today, we have here the public (the common man) and our elected representatives. I wish there were more of them here, but we have at least two of them (Poonamji & Ashishji) here. I would like interaction here between us, so that we don’t pass the buck to them and they don’t blame us. We can work as a public-private (politician) partnership for improvement of the environment. Firstly, from our side - in our homes we need to save water and electricity, segregate our waste, recycle & reuse it. Now, I request you (Poonamji & Ashishji) to take up the following issues with our Housing Minister & the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. There are many new buildings coming up where they should have three things done: 1. Composting Facilities 2. Solar Panels 3. Rain Water Harvesting These 3 points are there in the rule book, but they are not being implemented, (looking towards Ashishji) sir. We request Ashish Shelar & Poonam Mahajan to take it up with the CM. I was hoping he would be here – and that we would get some kind of incentive for housing societies which are eco-friendly, like maybe a reduction in property tax. The next request is to promote bio-gas plants (already being done in Pune & Matheran) in large housing societies for electrifying street lights – where waste is converted to electricity. This is a special request to our elected representatives to follow these important issues. The concept of ‘Sarva Swachh Abhiyan’, promoted by our Hon. PM – is part of saving our environment. However, this should not be used as a photo opportunity. As an example, on 1st

March 2015, around 1000 students from 10 schools in Bandra, cleaned all the roads leading to the Bandra Market. They collected 60 big bags of garbage. This was not a photo opportunity, but their commitment towards keeping their surrounding area clean. I was hoping that the CM would be here on a public platform, but I can’t miss this opportunity to get my message across. I thank the Bhamla Foundation for letting me express my views.” Environmentalist Darryl D’Monte told the audience, “Many people have referred to the magical qualities of this place we are meeting tonight. It is right next to the sea. But I am afraid that the next World Environment Day or the one after, it may not be such a magical place; if the state government goes ahead with the coastal road, just 200 metres off this coast. We do not wish to see this place, which we (a group of concerned citizens) have maintained with sweat and tears, for public use - just like we have ‘Equal Streets’, where people can walk & cycle away from cars. At a time when South Mumbai is no longer as attractive as it used to be, why are we creating a facility, which only 7% of

people who use motorised transport commute to work in cars? It is a 7% solution & we earnestly appeal to Poonamji & Ashishji to resist the coastal road. We would rather keep the coast clear, so that we can all enjoy as we are doing tonight.” MLA Ashish Shelar said, “I thank the Bhamla Foundation for organising such a wonderful function. The Hon. CM was on his way here, when a certain delegation invited him to have an interaction - which was very important for our city & country. He had no choice, but to go there. Poonamji will pass the messages that are given to her. Many environment-related issues have been raised here – housing policies, to have the coastal road or not. I can assure you as your elected representative of this area; that we are all here to work for the betterment of Mumbai city. This will not be compromised at all, for of any reason. This is my commitment. Decisions will be taken in the interest of the city. We accept the logic behind the views & issues that Shyama, Darryl & David have raised. We can surely work together.” TURN TO PAGE 13 >>

CONTD FROM PAGE 1 >> He (Mr. Thakur) further told us that they had constructed two types of bikes, beach bikes with 7 gears and thicker tyres for maximum performance on beach terrain, and street bikes with 18 gears and double suspension, both made from light aluminum - and that the patrol shifts were to be kept to 8 hour shift for health and moral reasons. Also, important to note is that bicycle patrolling is optional and not mandatory duty. It is targeted at officers in the age bracket of 25 to 30 years. In the pipeline soon to come are new uniforms in the making, along with comfortable sports footwear. Currently rain wear was provided too for the officers patrolling on bicycle, to go along with the smart and refreshing blue and yellow bicycles with 'Mumbai Police' written across them.

It is interesting to note, as Mr. Thakur stated - that this model of bicycle patrolling had been introduced at an earlier date also, but was a failure at that time. This was primarily due to the lack of support for the

He (Mr. Thakur) told us that they were only week into the trial period and have already learnt quite a bit. For instance, they learnt that the street bike front mudguard was not working to the benefit of the rider - and so the design of the mudguard was changed to best meet the required needs. We here at Bandra Buzz welcome this move as a refreshing and much needed addition to better improve our city environment and expand on the accessibility of the police, and we wish the police and all involved in this project, the very best in this endeavour. Two Rotaract Clubs in the city take efforts to raise awareness for unethical spitting

The menace of spitting wrongly at public places has been plaguing Mumbai city since ages. There seems to be very little done for the awareness of this issue. In such a period of dismay, where Mumbaikars themselves don’t realise the significance of having a cleaner, healthier and a stain-free home, two Rotaract Clubs in the city – Rotaract Club of Bombay Film City (RCBF) along with Rotaract Club of Lala Lajpat Rai College of Commerce and Economics (R.C. Lala) have come up together with a ray of hope. They have collaborated together to start a wonderful project called “ Thuk Thikaan”(meaning a place to spit ). These clubs have members who are under 30 years of age and most of them are below 25 - and still students. Thuk Thikaan basically aims to stop people from spitting at wrong places. Instead, they are encouraged and made aware them about the importance of using a receptacle. Rtr. Yogesh one of the chairpersons of this project says,“It’s not possible to reach out to every Mumbaikar and to explain them the ill-effects of chewing tobacco, since they already are aware about it. But through this project we want them to

at least develop a habit amongst them, not to spit at public places, clean walls etc., knowing the detrimental consequences.” ‘Thuk Thikaan’ is going to happen in phases, out of which the first one has already taken place on 27th April. Clubs RCBF and RC Lala reached out to Andheri and Dadar stations respectively - wherein they interviewed the public as to their views and opinions about what they feel and want to do about unwanted spitting. Rtr. Parshvi Hemani, the second chairman of this project, asserts,“The public in general i.e. the non-spitters are really distressed with the issue. They feel sad to see the pitiful state of the city, but are helpless since the ones to spit on the roads and walls are the once to never listen and instead react harshly. We have done our observations in phase I and now we plan for responsible action.” In the second phase they are going to take the aid of Swabhiman Taxi Rickshaw Union, by planning to stick the ‘Do not spit at wrong places’ posters behind the Rickshaw drivers’ seats for 500 rickshaws. Also they’re going to distribute pots as spittoons to them so that the public travelling in general observes and learn from the same. Priya Nandu

HAPPY PET CARE DURING THE MONSOONS!

The showers are a welcome break from the soaring temperatures. However, the season can be a damper for pets as they are likely to be affected by skin infections, digestive disorders, and a number of other health problems. Rainy season increases the chance of pets falling ill. Here are some tips that will help you take care of your pet during the rainy season.

Symptoms of storm anxiety include shaking, hiding, biting, and excessive chewing. Try distracting your pet by bringing out his toys or turning on the TV to drown out the sounds associated with the storm. Your vet may prescribe medicine to keep your pet calm during storms, in extreme cases. Don’t forget their deworming medication, tick and flea treatments.

WET FUR AND FOUL ODOR: The dirty fur that pets carry around is likely to lead to yeast or fungal infections. Their foot pads need to be cleaned with lukewarm water. Dry the spaces in between their digits (“fingers & toes”) with a towel to avoid fungal infections. Use herbal medicated talcs with ingredients like Eucalyptus and Neem to deal with the foul odor.

GROOMING FOR GOOD HEALTH: Regular baths and grooming with antitick or anti-flea shampoos are highly recommended. It is extremely important to keep their fur dry to prevent skin infections, so dry and brush their fur after every walk. Check their ears and clean them using medicated wipes or ear buds. Be careful not to go too deep, or get it done by a professional groomer.

VACCINATION SCHEDULE: A vaccination plan can keep your cat or dog safe and healthy, as they are the building blocks in the foundation of your pet’s immune system. Stay organized and upto-date this monsoon. HEALTHY DIET: A natural, balanced diet rich in protein, carbohydrates, fiber, calcium, vitamins & fat should be given regularly. You need to consider your pet’s dietary recommendations based on his or her health, age and size. Monsoon pet diet should mainly consist of fiber rich food, like banana, that help pets who suffer from indigestion. Dairy products need to avoided as for some it may be allergic. Always make sure the food is freshly prepared and free from fungi. Addition of multivitamins during the rainy season is highly recommended. Maintaining a good hygiene, keeping the feeding area clean, feeding a balanced diet, providing clean water and regular exercise will keep your pets healthy. SAFETY: Keep your dog indoors during severe rains, and ensure that the sleeping area is warm, dry and comfortable. Some dogs get frightened by rain and thunderstorms.

The best way to prevent tick infestation is to avoid taking your dog for a walk on grass and also keep their sleeping area free of mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and bugs. You must remember to use anti-tick preparations such as dog collars, shampoos, lotions or powders. Since their ears, paws and fur are more prone to infection, the long hair of dogs like the Cocker Spaniel, ShihTzu, Lhasa Apso, etc. can be trimmed. The ears and paws also need cleaning so use cotton swabs to remove all the fine dirt. Test whether you have done a good cleaning by seeing if your dog is licking itself. The less it licks, the cleaner is its body. Cutting nails is fraught with danger as it is very easy to damage them. Since the nails collect dirt get them trimmed professionally to avoid infection. Do remember that prevention is better than cure. The pet care tips mentioned above are not very hard to practise. It is very important that you give more to your loving, faithful friend, Happy Monsoon!

Fine Tune Your Environment with Feng Shui Expert & Advisor, Maria Hussain day of the year, it’s about being a part of the solution by taking action and doing something consistently – however big or small.

Feng Shui, when authentically practiced, allows us to determine how the environment is impacting and influencing all our aspects of life such as health, wealth, career, relationships, fame, reputation, knowledge, family life, children and most importantly ourselves and our happiness. Therefore, being environmentally conscious and supporting the land that can give so much to us is an important consideration. Feng Shui is translated as Wind and Water. Feng translates as wind and signifies the intangible components of life; those aspects that you can ‘feel’ having an effect on you but those that you cannot see or hold onto. Shui translates as water. This includes lakes, rivers, waterfalls, rain and even swamps. In fact in modern day, towns, cities, streets, roads and bridges are also considered to be flowing water. Some consider water to be the source of everything. Without water there is no life. Wind and Water, singularly or together create forces that impact either positively or negatively on the environment and all living things. Hence, through the professional and skilful application of Feng Shui, we can alter our experience by modifying the forces at play. In this way we can enrich our life. Today, concern for the natural environment has been escalating on a global scale. We are aware of the problems associated with the different type of wastes disposal, the greenhouse effect, depletion of the ozone layer, the problems created for our wildlife due to the felling of our old forests and the dumping ground our oceans have become. We must STOP this assault NOW! World Environment Day isn’t just one

Here are ten easy tips that we can begin with: • Save water by turning off the tap when you are brushing your teeth, having a shave or simply washing your face. This, is a simple and effective step. • Install shower heads with low flow in your bathrooms – a great way to save water. • Use towels to dry your hands and face rather than paper or tissues which you use once and throw away. • Using a hand razor instead of disposables goes a long way to cutting back on waste. • As you leave the house; switch off all the lights and appliances at the wall unit. • Stop using plastic bags – keep them in the console of your car so that you remember more easily. • Plant a new tree – make it one that bears fruit like a plum or orange tree and in this small way reduce your carbon footprint. • Organise an annual neighbourhood cleanup providing a positive focus on the earth through our immediate environment. Organise an annual Seaside clean-up with friends to help reduce the garbage clogging our oceans and waterways. • Walk to work or…ride your bicycle to and from work a couple of times a week. Great for your health and of course, the earths health as well. • Minimise your refuse by starting a compost bin. Together, by improving our knowledge of the environment, implementing small, positive changes into our daily lives and incorporate good Feng Shui principles….we can make a difference. So, join in and do your part so that collectively we support the sustainability of our planet as a healthy living environment in the future. In this way we can ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for ourselves and future generations.

Books, Boots and Broken Drains Monsoon in Bandra of the 80’s Bombay is a city sewn together from seven islands, (See Map circa 1660), like several pieces of velvet. When the South-west monsoon wind whistles over the waters of the Arabian Sea, those wrinkles show up. But the monsoon reminds me of brand new books not wrinkled velvet. Wrinkling the plastic to cover each crisp collection of pages in thick water-resistant sheets; the arrival of the monsoon and the new school year are inextricably linked. The seven islands linked by reclaimed rivulets. Our Bandra sat atop the seven islands, like a comfortable crown, being linked by the reclaimed Mahim Causeway. Bandra lying outside the perimeters of the original ‘Bombay’ should frankly file for cessation! I watched a bit of Bandra reclaimed firsthand. When the plans came through for a pleasure-park along the sea front, our home on the wrong corner of Carter Road became the perfect spot to witness how Bombay was originally sewn into one city from several. Just before the monsoon we watched trucks of refuse tip their contents piling high along the crumbling sea defence wall, defying the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and the sea itself. I dreamt of a tsunami that first night. The sea will come to reclaim its stolen space. But we put up with the stink from that refuse, because our local councillor Sir (Oliver Andrade) a gentle soul, who encouraged Bandra residents to be healthier, had promised a fine park to walk in. I was too young to care about the protesters arguing to save Mangroves or those for healthier lungs. All I could see was my Bandra becoming bigger, growing a belly like our pregnant dog. I was scared. If you push the sea, where will it go? The rain swept, the wind wept. I braved the rain to Bandra Book Centre (now called Navjivan; nothing survives the ‘Name Change Brigade’, here’s hoping Bandra doesn’t have to morph to Vandre.), which I loved calling BBC on the circular corner of Linking Road. I was going somewhere important. [I nursed an ambition to work at the real BBC then]. My red boots splashing, I brought home my books. The first day walking home from school the rain pelted at my heavy bag. A drain shattered under the weight of water and I was swept homeward, past the billowing sea

swelling onto the land where pink shrimp were drying. Everything was the sea. My books, in their clear covers were wet; my red gumboots were full of murky sea water. A broken drain grate floated by. But the monsoon had arrived bang on time. The MRF Rain Day was right, for once! Rain follows no calendars anymore, and plays havoc with the stock exchange. London rain is not like Bombay rain. And Bombay rain is not like Bandra rain. In Bandra it never pours it soars. Because of the lie of the land, the island that was Bandra juts out a bit. Now due to reclamation at every single shore, the city is so much larger than before. Here in this city of walls, where once Londinium was one tiny suburb within the confines of one set of walls not seven, London too is enlarged. To safeguard this city from flooding the Thames Barrier was constructed. The rain here is often called diamond dust, it is that fine. My children who have never seen a Bombay monsoon call a heavy downpour here “Bombay rain”. They have heard me you see, musing about my lost monsoon. Especially in June, when my birthday is around the corner and I know the low lying, dense rain clouds are gathering speed across Carter Road. I long for that pelt of pebble-like water. I long for my lost red gumboots, I long for broken drains. Anwesha Arya lives and writes in Rye, East Sussex where she can see the London Channel from every room, but longs for her view of the Arabian Sea.

As far as Bandra (friends, I regularly walk here on Carter Promenade) & our city is concerned, our duty (towards our environment) begins in our own minds & homes. It is after 5th June when our time starts to act towards preserving our planet. Many things should be done & I am available to help you. I stay in Bandra – and with Asif’s co-ordination, can help do a lot. With relaxation for builders, every new tower coming up; adds to the infrastructure challenge. The consequences will have to be faced by us & generations to come. I request our activists here to act now. This month a select committee of parliament with respect to the reality business in Mumbai, will be visiting Mumbai to hear our grievances and suggestions. I would request my friends here to please prepare a memorandum. I happen to be a member of this select committee. I would see that your issues are taken up at the highest level – and get incorporated in the act that is going to come. Poonamji is always with me, shoulder to shoulder. Although Shelarji, Poonamji and I may have political differences, this is not politics. This is our life, blood & sweat from our daily hard work. We are the same family, with one platform. The SAT 2016 Redesign The College Board recently announced that March 2016 will see SAT undergoing a major facelift. The new SAT aims at testing college readiness amongst students, where assessment and instruction work together to be open and clear so that students and educators know what to expect.

Since this is the biggest change in the SAT in 30 years, it is understandable that many students, especially current 10th graders, might be anxious about it. The table below shows the changes and what they would mean for aspirants who are looking to write the new SAT.

Change

What it means

Relevant Words in Context

• Interpret meaning based on content • Master relevant Vocabulary • Engage in close reading

Command of Evidence

• Interpret, synthesize, and use evidence found in a wide range of sources • Support the answer you choose • Integrate information conveyed through both reading passages and informational graphics

Essay Analyzing a Source

• More closely mirror college writing assignments • Cultivate close reading, careful analysis, and clear writing • Promote the practice of reading a wide variety of arguments & analyzing an author’s work

Math Focused on 3 Areas

• Problem Solving and Data Analysis (quantitative literacy) • Heart of Algebra (mastery of linear equations) Passport to Advanced Math (familiarity with more complex equations)

Analysis in Science and Social Studies

Students will apply their reading, writing, language & math skills to answer questions in science, history, & social studies contexts.

No Penalties for Wrong Answers

• One point for each correct answer • Zero points for unanswered items • Zero points for wrong answers

These changes seem student friendly, and the redesigned SAT seems more relevant to students curriculum, with its focus on producing evidence and arriving at critical conclusions. Prep Zone works closely with the College Board to deliver the SAT Redesign to students who wish to write the same.

NEW VENTURE

Local News on the go: New App launched We met up with two young enthusiastic entrepreneurs; Punit and Andrea, who eagerly expressed their views on the app startup they have been working on since January 2015. Their answers to our probing questions make for interesting reading. What is Local Press Co? Punit: Local Press Co is an app that allows individuals to report and follow local news stories from in and around their neighbourhood. In essence, users can do three things on the app – report, follow and validate local news. The app also allows for engagement in the form of share, subscribe, comment etc. What problem does it solve? Andrea: Local news often affects our day to day lives. Unlike conventional news, however, it seldom gets covered by traditional media outlets. Fortunately, some stories see the light of day owing to the advent of social media. But, the coverage on social media comes with its own problems. You never know what to trust and how to separate news from the plethora of content. Punit: Exactly. With Local Press Co, we aim to cover the stories that typically get missed and feature them on a platform

that’s dedicated to news alone. We solve the problem of verifying news stories by crowdsourcing the validation as well. How did you come up with the concept? Punit: The concept is actually a by-product of the problem. We simply listed down all the problems that we thought existed & tried to conceptualize a product that would solve them all. Over time, we sort of fine tuned our approach & the end result is the product you will hopefully download & use What's unique about Local Press Co? Punit: I think the fact that we still haven't come across a direct competitor with a similar approach puts us in a pretty good position. As for what makes us unique, I think it’s the fact that we have managed to build on the concept of citizen journalism by leveraging a crowdsourced news approach on a mobile first platform. Andrea: Also, news posted by people on social media can’t really be verified in any way. On the app, however, the vouch & dismiss actions add a level of user validation. Tell us about the team Punit: Well, I am the founder and Andrea is the only other stakeholder in Local Press

Co. We have been working on the app for over 6 months now. From a responsibility perspective, I manage the tech and finance aspects and Andrea takes care of the online marketing and content. Apart from the two of us we have 3 other members that form a part of our core team. Rahul Nanda, who happens to be a social media influencer himself, handles our entire social media outreach. Disha works as a Content Editor and is responsible for overlooking all the news on the app and Aanchal is lending a hand as a Marketing Intern. Future plans Punit: Post launch we will focus on validating our proof of concept and integrating the feedback that we receive. We also plan on raising funds within the next three months. You can stay tuned for features like video reports, trending news and community based news. Bandra is always buzzing whether it’s an event, outreach program or even recognizing local achievers. Do check out the Local Press Co app available on iOS and Android Stores for your daily dose of Bandra news and more. Amit Shenoy

Sanctity of Heritage Crosses compromised by Vandals Stephen Noronha offers owners and caretakers a practical solution to an age old issue

Look around Bandra and her surrounding suburbs – and we see several heritage crosses being misused for undesirable ac-

tivities. The Cross at Chimbai road, near Vailankanni statue has eatables being prepared & sold right in front of it. The red

base cross at Carter road that leads to Sherly is another place where young boys & girls meet up to drink alcohol, resting on the cross base - and have fun at people who come to the promenade. In Santacruz, a heritage cross is being used to hang clothes for sale. Can we let these heritage structures, which are part of our city’s culture; be brazenly vandalized. When the issue of BMC cross demolitions arise, those concerned run from pillar to post. Most crosses are cleaned and the rosary recited in May & October – but between these periods the issue of public vandalising is ignored. Yet, some people murmur about this issue – but do nothing about it.

Now, Stephen Noronha, President of Block # 40, Congress (I) & Special Executive Officer from Rajan has offered owners and official caretakers to build a fence around each cross, FREE of cost. If written permission is given with a request to Stephen Noronha (98203 63773) is given; he will do the fencing – along with all necessary BMC permission procedures. The expenses for these jobs would be from the corporators fund, backed by Ex-MLA Baba Siddique. This will ensure that the sanctity of our heritage crosses (some are more than 100 years old) are safeguarded. Stephen’s parting message is: “United We Stand, Divided We Fall” Amit Gupta

Sajid's Nepal Earthquake Outreach Congress Block President (# 39) & social worker helped garner funds

On a hot summer Sunday early evening, when most people prefer to relax and sip some tea, only die-hard activists would want to literally 'beg' for money at Bandra Railway Station - all for a good cause. It was to provide some relief for our brethren in neighbouring Nepal. Thousands are suffering untold misery because of this natural calamity. A series of earthquakes has rocked this Himalayan nation - and they need help. Sajid Shaikh was very pro-active to garner a team of around 100 volunteers from among the INC, to come and collect funds from the public for using it as aid

Today there is a need for Indian actors to adapt seamlessly into any acting environment. My training workshops help them achieve this as they include creative techniques from across the world - UK, US and Australia." Dalip says of SIIDA ,“SIIDA is an internationally led training institute tailored specifically for Indian actors and directors. With a world class faculty and a focus on acting and directing for both theatre and film, the courses offer multi-collaborative sessions with leading Indian, Australian and British film and theatre professionals imparting unique acting/directing techniques that have been largely unexplored in India.”

for the earthquake victims. He appealed on the mobile P.A. System to commuters who passed by, to give their contribution. Ex-MLA Baba Siddiqui, along with his Corporators: Karen D'Mello, Asif Zakaria & Tanveer Patel - along with Kavita Rodricks and other key INC team members came to support this outreach, on humanitarian grounds. Seeing the enthusiasm of the Nepal earthquake outreach, commuters who alighted at Bandra Railway station and those who stood at the rickshaw queue; were happy to give donations towards a worthy cause.
