Nobby’s Success Over His Circumstances

Norbert Miranda, Owner of Nobby’s Corner on Manuel Gonsalves Road

Life is like a thread, that gets shorter with each moment that passes by - and I guess that is what makes us value this life, where we are just travellers facing various difficulties. We tend to complain about the various problems we face in our day to day life & tend to lose our present & optimistic attitude towards tackling these obstacles. Well after you hear about Norbert Miranda, you shall value what you have & put a full stop to the unwanted desires. Norbert started off as a kite vendor & with the support of the late Vincy D’Mello he opened up his shop on Manuel Gonsalves Road (150 meters from St. Andrews College) named Nobby’s Corner. He sells various snack items, along with various refreshments. Now, you would be wondering what's so great about him as compared to the vendors near your house? Well like every leaf on a tree has a different story to say, here is the inspiring story on Nobert. He had a normal life like each & every kid has until he reached the turning point of his life. When he was 7 years old, he fell from the roof of his house & landed on a plank of nails & in the hospital went through a wrong treatment that made his hand septic. After 14 days, the senior doc-

tor advised him to cut off his right hand or the infection would spread to the entire body. He used to use his right hand for most of his daily tasks & converting from a righty to a lefty wasn't easy for him, but like a true hero he still continued to smile as he believes that the smile through tears is the greatest smile one can get on his or her face. It is true adversity affects ones life to a great extent, but true hero's rise from these problems. He went to a night school & today it is due to his perseverance & hard work that he was able to educate his daughter & make her get into St. Xavier’s College which is one of the best colleges in Mumbai. Nobert made me realise it is best to smile in each & every situation & show the problems that arise in front of you that you are way stronger than them, as God created you because He had faith in you to tackle these problems. He advises young entrepreneurs that they should have the courage & will power to convert their dreams into reality no matter what comes infront of them. Sidhhant Kapai Pic Courtesy: Ethel Misquitta

Stanislaus inaugurates Major Upgrades with Alumni Help Acoustically Dead Rooms | Safety Showers | Rational Re-Designs eBooks | Wi-Fi | Humidity Control | Colour Correct Lighting Adequate Oxygen Levels I Interactive Projectors

St. Stanislaus School re-opened for the new academic year on 16th June 2014. On the first day of school the new upgraded facilities of the school were also inaugurated and dedicated to the school. Upgrade of these learning spaces would not have been possible without the generosity of many of our alumni who helped make this happen. Design and planning for these spaces has been carried out pro bono by alumnus Conrad Gonsalves (Class of 1967) SCHOOL LIBRARY

The classroom is built of desk units that are light-weight yet stable to allow easy rearrangement as classroom, discussion room and training centre. Chairs of state-of-theart design, allow for use by a wide age group and have a special feature of stacking over the desks to allow for easy maintenance. Green boards of textured resin surfaces, instead of the traditional blackboards will soon be complimented by interactive projectors. Highly absorbent ceiling surfaces make the room acoustically dead and make speech comfortably intelligible. Thermal insulation also keeps temperatures down, with options of air-conditioning when required. WORK EXPERIENCE ROOM & SCIENCE LABORATORIES The block of four separate science and associated laboratories has been relocated to the third floor. This work is in progress and the spaces will have three types, varying depending upon the facilities of gas, water, electricity and lighting. These spaces, though non air-conditioned, will have adequate exhaust air and safety showers and eyewash points. Since they are located on the uppermost floor, the movement of faculty and students will be rationalized and minimized while also providing for additional safety.

of collaboration and peer learning in computer education. Tables allow for discussion and personal work. With seating for sixty students, the space can alternatively accommodate forty adults. Lighting is colour correct for work on monitors. Air-conditioning provides two air changes per hour; to keep oxygen levels adequate for the high density space, while pressurizing the room, to reduce ingress of SCHOOL MUSEUM dust. While the old library has common stacking and reading spaces, the new arrangement has a dedicated area for stacking which is dust controlled with roof extractors, a central space for reading and referencing with abundant day lighting and a portion for the librarian and assistants from where they can easily monitor the activity and control issuing of books. The carrels are ready for connection to the main server, driven by software which will allow browsing, reading ebooks and future connectivity to other sites as well as Wi-Fi connectivity. Artificial lighting has been designed to augment the natural day lighting when required, using lamps of high efficiency and appropriate colour temperature for comfortable reading. Sellebrity FC makes Bandra Football proud at MDFA! Dadar XI were rewarded for their gritty determination, as Sellebrity FC (Bandra) failed to win the penalty shoot-out in the Mumbai District Football Association First Division League Finals 2014. Dadar XI shot down Sellebrity FC, Bandra 3-2 via the sudden death to lift the First Division title of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League – 2013-14, at the St. Xavier’s Ground, Parel on Sunday evening. In a hard fought final, the Dadar side survived several anxious moments during normal period which ended in a goalless stalemate and later in the tie-breaker that finished deadlocked at 2-all. But the Dadar team were rewarded for their gritty determination as Sellebrity FC once again failed to score from the penalty spot in the sudden death and they managed to score the decisive winning goal through stopper back Anthony Fernandes to trigger celebration among his teammates and supporters. Sellebrity have to blame themselves for the loss. They showed good teamwork and dominated the proceedings against the experienced Dadar side. They also created the better goal-scoring chances, but were not able to transform their superiority into goals and quite rightly paid the penalty. In the final minutes of the match, Sellebrity FC defender Pratik Kadam had the best chance to kill the match but he clumsily headed wide from close with an open goal in front. In the nervy penalty shootout, Alex Ambrose, Kevin Kerr and Anthony Fernandes found success for Dadar XI, while only Joshua Fernandes and Karan Kapoor could convert for Sellebrity FC (Bandra). Earlier, West Zone United overcame Guru Nanak SC 3-0 in the Third Place match. Faizan Shaikh netted a brace and Abdur Samad one for the winning side. Dadar XI received the First Division Winners Trophy and Sellebrity FC (Bandra) received the Runners Up Trophy from chief guest Alwyn Saldanha, a social worker. However both Sellebrity FC (Bandra) and Dadar XI qualify for MDFA's Super Division next season, alongwith West Zone United and Guru Nanak. Vineet Varma

Romantic Rains & Saffron Surge - Creating a Climate Change in Bandra? Dear Readers, It’s just June and as the rising heat gets unbearable to a crescendo, overcast skies are seen over Bandra and her surrounding suburbs. Birds huddle in building ledges or tree branches. Then, showers of blessings are a welcome change of temperature. Early morning joggers at our three seaside promenades are caught unaware – and couples come closer in the romantic rains. Bandraites have voted for change – and now want to see campaign promises put into action. Amid hectic poll activity in March, April and results in mid May, most of us have sneaked in a short summer holiday.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Litterbugs At the Football World Cup 2014, Japanese fans helped clean the litter from the stadium after each match. If they can clean their own litter in a Stadium which is not theirs... why can’t we clean up Bandra, that we say is 'OURS'. Hope this opens our eyes - especially related to the recent incident / report in Bandra, of an amazingly brave citizen who requested the duo to clean up their can of coke! Alastair Quadros They should be given rigorous imprisonment or 6 months community service like they do in the US, to sweep the roads every day. This will teach these litterbugs a lesson for life. Anand Pendharkar Shoddy System in College Admissions The S.S.C results are out! Or are they really? Some have been withheld due to 'missing information'. Thanks to the 'working system', one that is full of loopholes -this is done to suit their convenience. To name one, present is the case of revaluation for students who have passed but have expected higher scores. They apply for it, only to receive the verification post AFTER the closing of the online admissions. Of what purpose is Revaluation then? At what cost is the Board playing with student's career? Solution: Revaluation of passed students should be time barred and the results thereof should be availableBEFORE closing of online admissions. A very clear system is the need of the hour! Now, rejuvenated – we are looking forward towards seeing a better Bandra. The burning local issues are: Hawkers, Slums, Security, BMC-Builder-Police-Politician Nexus. And as our ‘queen of the suburbs’ evolves, newer issues come up – on a daily basis. BandraBuzz is your platform to showcase what’s happening, what is being done – and what should be done to resolve issues. This month, peace marches & protests seem to be the order of the day – as activist in Bandra are in super active mode. If you notice something good or bad in and around Bandra, please share your information as a citizen reporter to bandrabuzz@gmail.com If it is news worthy, we will publish it. Local Talent, Upcoming

Events, Unauthorised Structures, Security Issues (and practical ideas how to solve them) can be reported. You will be given credit for your efforts. Activist Anil & Super Samaritan Sandra helps homeless accident victim Andrew This is the case of Andrew - the homeless accident victim and traffic volunteer from Bandra, who hit the headlines, when his picture was featured as headline news in Mumbai Mirror. Most people read about it, but did nothing to help this helpless man. It was just another news story. However, Anil Joseph walked his talk – with prompt action. When we came to know about Anil Joseph’s outreach of helping humanity in his own way, we asked him what exactly was his method of rehabilitating Andrew. He spoke to us, saying: “I just visited Andrew Benjamin in Navi Mumbai at the beautiful National Burns Center hospital. I went early to avoid the ‘Chembur rush’. Andrew is in good spirits. He says the pain in the leg is much less now. He has a nice calm quite room to himself, the window of which opens up to lovely greenery. He told me the doctors have carried out fresh x-rays and that the doctors feel he may need to be operated and a steel rod installed, after which it would take 6 to 8 weeks to heal. Thanks to his angel with a heart of gold - Sandra Shroff. Being Chairman of this hospital, the doctors assured us that he is getting the best possible correct medical treatment. For this, I told her, she has earned my respect and I personally owe her a debt of gratitude. I had called up many affluent people I know, seeking help for Andrew, including people (certain religious men from churches too); and all wanted to know more about

him, his nature - is he a drunk on drugs, any bad habits… and police case, if any, related to accident etc. - and then offered piece meal assistance less than I could easily have done myself. Then, I called Sandra. She asked no questions... just told me to take him to the hospital and assured me of his treatment first… and then a roof over his head, to avoid the monsoon, while he recuperated. With divine help, we’ll rehabilitate him once he is back on his feet – and will keep visiting till he is fine.” When we asked Naresh Karmalker, an active Bandraite; his immediate comment was: “Anil, bless you for your compassionate heart and your never-flagging zest for helping humanity.” Anil, keep up the good work. Bandraites are proud of you. J. Laheji

PEOPLE & POLITICOS REACT OVER RAIL FARE HIKE 23rd June witnessed angry protesters gathered in large numbers outside Bandra Railway Station along with Congress supporters, Corporators & party workers from Bandra Taluka Congress (I) - led by Mr. Baba Siddique, the local MLA. The atmosphere was tense. Protesters demanded for an immediate rollback in Rail Fares. Shouting slogans against the Modi Sarkar for not keeping up their promise and holding placards, they vent their feelings to condemn the rise in rail fares. Police bandobast ensured that peace was maintained. The crowds asked: Is this the ‘Acche Din’, promised during BJP Election campaigns? Leaders, with black bands on their arms; told the crowds that the common man has been fooled by the media hype – and the public needs justice. Such steep hikes cannot be part of the middle class budget – and needs to be resolved at the earliest. Survival was at stake. Here is how people reacted to rail price hike by Modi gov. Suneel Mendez: With all due respect, were they really genuine protestors at Bandra Raiway Station? Did the Congress bring inflation down in their 14 year reign? What was their health care policy? Did they have a petrol price reduction scheme? Were teacher’s salaries increased? Only film stars salaries rose to 100 crore per movie! For that matter, when a middle class salaried man gets an increase; it is maximum Rs. 1000-3000 and his salary saturates max to Rs. 50,000 per month. What does the Dinesh Gupta: I think you must appreciate the fact that minister’s salary saturate at? Can you count the number Modi took this difficult decision to raise the ticket rates, of zeros?!! After the figure ahead of zero?!! instead of just basking in the afterglow of the popular support given to him. Herbert Barretto: It was better late than never. Shane Cardoz: For what is the Congress protesting? How Sujit Liddle: This is politics. They are doing exactly what are they concerned? The Congress has robbed the Indian the BJP would have done in their place, if they were in the people in its various scams to the tune of more than opposition. 10,000 crores. It is the height of shamelessness. The Congress leaders themselves are not concerned for the people. John Vendokaran: Yes, this is a topsy turvy game. Now that Congress is in the opposition, they will protest; which Uday Weling: I see a big change. The platforms: Andheri otherwise BJP would have done. Sab ek hi jath ki hai. ‘Hum till Bandra... looked a wee bit cleaner... lesser litter. The Citizens bewakoof hai’. Sudhir Kamath: It’s now reversed to a max of 14.2% hike. Incidentally, it was passed by the previous government and was put on hold till elections got over - and was routinely implemented by the present government. AAP organized a Peace March to protest provocations against minority communities & vulnerable sections of society 8th June 2014 saw a group of AAP protesters, who started their Carter Promenade Peace March from CCD, Carter Road to the end of the promenade near Otters Club. Then, an encouraging speech by Preeti Menon got the protesters on the right mindset of communal harmony. This was followed by lighting of candles in honour of the Pune Hate victims and the girls raped in Bah and all over India. Bandra Buzz spoke to Preeti Menon after the Carter Promenade Peace March, and she gave us an insight into what exactly the protest was all about – and her message to Bandra and her neighbouring areas. Preeti said, “Our society has become more and more intolerant by the day. We feel that there is a deliberate attempt to create unrest in society. Attempts are made by provoking a minority community and by attacking vulnerable sections of society. I think it is very important for the conscious and educated people – there are enlightened people living in Bandra, who

have always been socially active in many ways – They should come forward and initiate peace processes. There are many provocations – and we need to stop them. We should act against them, by ensuring that there is peace – and that there is faith in vulnerable sections that the majority community will stand by them. So, whether it is the Dalit girls who were raped and killed in Banau or the boy who was lynched in Ahmednagar or Mohsen Sheikh - we must stand by these people. We must show that we will fight for their justice. If we do that, others will refrain from such acts. Therefore it is very important for Bandraites, who are an enlightened community, to come together and fight this (evil mindset).” You can view the Carter Promenade Peace March by AAP volunteers at bandrabuzz.com/aap.html. The march ended with all present standing at attention and singing the national anthem. Viva la communal harmony. Karim Khan

Mandal Volunteers gather at Shiv Sena Shakha marking the Rajyabhishek of Shivaji Maharaj

Mr. Sudesh Dube, Upvibhag Pramukh of Shiv Sena The Great Maratha King Chatrapati Shivaji was honoured at a massive function on Monday, 9th June 2014 at Upvibhag Pramukh Mr. Sudesh Dube’s office, Hill Road, near Vodafone Bandra Store. This venue witnessed an emotional ceremony to mark the Rajyabhishek (coronation) of Shivaji Maharaj on 6th June 1674 at Raigad. Ramdas Gamree (BJP, Vidhan Sabha Secretary). Mr. Balwant Rao Dalvi then gifted a sword to Mr. Sudesh Dube. Speaking to the gathering, Sudesh said that he was proud of the ‘Shiv Durg Premi Organisation’ that undertook an annual pilgrimage from Bandra to Raigad Fort non-stop for the past 13 years. Normally, in June there is heavy rain in Raigad, but the pilgrims spirit was not dampened. He was happy that the values & principles of Shivaji Maharaj and the Hindu religion were being passionately promoted in our modern world. Concluding his speech, Sudesh said that he always prayed for the safe return of the volunteers – and may their numbers increase in the

future. The video clips of ‘Shivaji Maharaj Abhishek’ 2014 can be viewed at: bandrabuzz.com/shiv-sena.html Then, Mr. Balwant Rao Dalvi spoke about how he had visited the Raigad Fort along with his friends around 14 years back, to witness the Abhishek at the original spot – and was surprised to find very few people attending. Hence, he took an oath to form an organization to help volunteers visit the Raigad Fort and promote Shivaji Maharaj Abhishek – and his values. The ‘Shiv Durg Premi Organisation’ has since done 13 annual trips, without a break, to commemorate Shivaji anointed as King. He further added that his organisation is ever grateful to their main mentor and

guide MLC Ashish Shelar, who is the BJP Mumbai President - for his guidance and financial support, providing a free bus for the Raigad trip, 500 books for poor children in Raigad districts and free ‘T’ shirts to the pilgrims. Finally, Mr. Sudesh Dube launched the 2014 Souvenir, that had stories and letters by famous historians on the great Shivaji Maharaj’s works and values. He told the audience that the Shiv Durg Premi Organisation was set up in 2000, with Mr. Balwant Rao Dalvi as its President, Mr. Sunil Mahadik as Treasurer and Sunil Joshi as Secretary.
