Mary Basilica this August What is it that beckons you when you think, Bandra … Red hot coals-cooked kalejis, bhutta, Hill road shopping, sitting by the sea gazing at the setting sun, the dazzling sea-link. But come September the birthday of Mother Mary on the 8th, the start of Bandra feast… all the arterial roads are channeled towards Bandra’s beloved Basilica, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount. EMIDAR to support St. Catherine of Siena School and Orphange Come 24th August Bandra will see a Monsoon Run with a Difference. This Run will support our local NGO St. Catherine of Siena School for Destitute Children & Orphanage. This run will be of 15 kms & 7.5 kms. ‘We are very proud to support St. Catherine’s Home through the EMIDAR MONSOON RUN, as we are convinced of the great silent work through sports & other means like music & dance they have been doing with destitute & orphanage kids since 1957. They believe that children who for whatever reason have met with grave misfortune should be in no way be deprived of basic amenities & personality development that the more fortunate enjoy.’ Kevin Pereira - Founder EMIDAR Running Promotions, Race Organisers. The orphanage houses over 100 kids who always fill the air with their infectious laughter & smile. Brother Joseph Sebastian - Brother-in -charge is very enthusiastic about the support EMIDAR extends & the event itself. The orphanage & school through sports gives space to empower children. By following sports rules, their children can build sharing & discipline unlike the street freedom they are comfortable

with. Sports helps build sharing, social skills, small wins, positive attitude & better self esteem. ‘Idea of sport for us, is to make children healthy & strong. Daily sports activity helps in a long way to stay away from addiction & substance abuse freely available on the Street’, says Brother Joseph. ‘When EMIDAR approached us we were glad and also immediately connected with their vision of Every Day I Dream About Running. Through the Run we can reinforce our kids with the positive energy that is generated through a sports event’, said Brother Joseph. With grounds, gardens & open areas shrinking, runs like these are welcome to all. EMIDAR is garnering support for St. Catherine through donor bids Rs. 2000, donations & sponsor of a child from the St . Catherine Home to run with them. So Bandraites come 24th August, lets show our support for our local NGO. Registrations are open @ www.emidar.com. For more information about the work of the Welfare Society For Destitute Children. Shawn D’souza scores Jesus Club Inter Parish Football Tournament winner for St. Peter’s The much anticipated Inter-Parish Sunday School Football Tournament was held by St. Peter’s Church for the second year running on the 12th & 13th of July. This two day sporting event had enough skill and participation to get the sleepyeyed FIFA World Cup watchers out and cheering in large numbers. The rain Gods also thunderously responded to the dance of feet and ball. The tournament kicked off with 8 teams from 7 parishes around Bandra fighting to top their group. Girls & boys aged 10-15 had the time of their lives battling it out amidst friendly rivalry. The St. Francis of Assissi squad took lead providing us with an 8 goal ‘goalfest’ on Day 1 – and no lineup was spared – clearly cementing their spot in the Semi-Finals. Mount Carmel’s, St. Peter’s ‘A’ and St. Anne’s were the other sides to make it to Day 2. Day 2 was defined by draws and slim leads with teams matching each other play for play. The crowd fa-

vorites St. Francis of Assissi were knocked out of the tourney with a header hat-trick by St. Peters’ Sean Coutinho. Old friends Mount Carmel’s & St. Peter’s met at the finals – their game in the group stage was a hard fought & exciting 1-1 draw so this definitely was the match to determine a winner. The first half, with all its exhilaration, was goalless thanks to the excellent effort of the goalies – Desandro Oliveira & Conan Almeida. The second half was equally electric from the get go. Finally, a few minutes to full time, Shawn D’Souza sneaked a bolt from inside the penalty box that had the crowd go wild – Peter’s had scored! The game ended with choruses of “Hala Peters” echoing all the way home! Spirits were high & camaraderie fostered – that’s what football is all about! Ad maiorem Dei gloriam! by Priyanka Rebello

Tasty Treats on Rainy Days

The rains in Bandra makes me feel like I am in a hill station far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and makes you want to warm up with a hot cuppa tea/coffee, with samosas, vada pav, hot spicy sambar with idli/dosa, and for some a bowl of sweet corn soup. Bandra is speckled with numerous eateries and I am sure we all have our favourites, but I am going to tell you where I love to eat these rainy day delights & why. The Punjab Sweet House in Pali market is where I run to for a hot fresh samosa golden brown & crispy on the exterior with a soft potato filling inside which lights up any heart. I love their samosas because it does not have an sweet raisins & cashews, like some other punjabi samosas do. If you cross the road from Punjab Sweet House and walk down the lane opposite it, you will reach my favourite South Indian restaurant here in Bandra, Shree Sagar, which serves my favourite idli-vada submerged in piping hot spicy sambar, like desi dunkin donuts. Their sambar is a close second to the best sambar in all of mumbai that is of Madras Cafe at Matunga. I love their sambar because its not sugary sweet and the vegetables and lentils have had enough time to stew, and spices dont taste raw. Everytime I visit Shree Sagar I just can't get enough of their Sambar and my continuous demand for 'ek aur sambar' six or seven times over, is met by a smile from their very obliging staff. My husband eats their

rava masala dosa without oil, but prefers the palak dosa at Amrut Sagar on Hill Road, I on the other hand only enjoy toast butter at Amrut Sagar. Shree Sagar has an added bonus they do a better coffee than Starbucks, Costa or Cafe Coffee Day. Maharastra Chana Bhandar at Pali market has some mouth watering, eye watering, super green chilli spicy batata vadas, yet feels like a great luxury on a wet and windy day, with some garam garam chai it hits a sweet note and satisfies my spicy cravings for a bread and potatoe sandwhich. I love it sooo much because it reminds me of my days in junior college outside Sinhal's Classes Nana Chowk at which time a vada pav was only Rs. 2, and my mother complained about it being too expensive because in her time it was 50p outside Sofia College. Last but not the least of my rainy day favourites is a mean sweet corn chicken soup, I am a pure non-vegetarian so I cant think of sweet corn soup without chicken and an egg drop. But, I know many people who like mushrooms or baby corn/carrots and french beans in theirs. I can only therefore, recommend Mr. Chow for a good portion size, taste, warmth for their soup. Several of my friends though prefer the sweet corn soup from China Gate, yet some others would recommend Joseph's Kitchen or 5-Spice. Better then the best Sweet corn chicken soup you would get at my house, if I had time I would put up the recipe for you. Write in if you really want

Whisk one egg and add to the thickened soup, stir with a fork. Taste. Add salt as per your taste. Sip spoonfuls of soup sitting by the window with chilly-soya-vinegar, well worth the effort. by Teejay Pic by Ethel Misquitta

BANDRABUZZ.COM BETTER BANG FOR YOUR BUCK Dear Reader, July in Bandra has a variety of mood swings. However, our surrounding sea fronts help to balance out the extreme highs and lows. Yet, it is sunny, hot and humid – and before you can wink, it’s dark, raining and cool; with pools of flooded roads, that create chaos with traffic snarls. Yes, the weather is wonderfully cool, if you are indoors; but hostile if you are travelling on foot, or caught unaware without your rain gear. Shopping sprees on Hill Road and Linking Road, with other adjoining areas are at a peak during dry spells; decreasing during heavy showers to a trickle. And… yes, contenders to the MLA position (in and around Bandra) in the up-

EDITORIAL

coming elections are already active again. Every issue, local or national; are highlighted. In many ways, this is the ideal time for citizens to get a better bang for their buck – in terms of getting better civic amenities in their neighbourhood; for the tax paid to the government. Now, politicians will do almost anything to gain visibility and brownie points. In Bandra, we can see how MLA contenders are suddenly very very ‘people friendly’ – viewing votes build up as their ultimate goal. A lot of social activities dot the calendar of local politicians – who need to be seen as ‘saviours’ of their area of voters. Road rage, robberies, drugs and other crimes are rising in Bandra – and we need to collectively support those who are standing up against these issues. This is

creating havoc in the lives of peaceful citizens, for no fault of theirs. Bandra Buzz is with you, to highlight your issues - and see that it gets visibility to the right authorities. Please report any incidents, so that corrective action can be taken in time. Your feedback is vital to the vibrancy of your neighbourhood. With many ‘iftar parties’ around Bandra, this month end is the culmination of Ramadan, we wish our muslim bretheren ‘Ramadan Mubarak’. May communal harmony prevail in and around Bandra, as it has been through the recent past. Warm Regards, Merck N. D’Silva Editor-in-Chief 98207 83616

Letters to the Editor UNION BUDGET 2014 The Union Budget 2014 presented by the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is hopeless, useless, bogus and without direction. It is considered as an anti-people budget, with nothing in there for the poor, middle class & other low income groups; including the rural and urban of the country. I strongly feel that the Union Budget is full of false promises - and is misleading people. There is no provision for improvement and safety of the people's living standard. It is ‘big talks’ with no action and positive results - and it is the biggest blunder on part of the people of our country for electing the wrong government. The urgent need of the hour is that the finance minister must stop giving false promises and concentrate on improving the existing conditions of the economy and standard of the common people; which is in a very bad shape and will soon collapse in the coming days. Aslam Khan

BANDRA’S ‘CAMPA COLAS’ We have all seen & read about the ‘Campa Cola’ drama – and imagine the harrowing time that those families displaced must have gone through, mentally & physically. A sad story, that could’ve been avoided. It is a fact that Bandra (and Mumbai) has many ‘Campa Colas’ in prime areas, with political & police patronage and BMC’s generous blessings. These illegal structures are built blatantly, using fear as a weapon. Imagine – a nine storey building is right now being built in the gaothan area of central Sherly Village. This is surely a Campa Cola ‘inthe-making’. Years from today, many of the ‘flat-owners’ will need to move out and the top floors demolished. Meanwhile, the builder has made his money and vanished – leaving the hapless ‘owners’ with worthless documents – and no home. So, why is the H-Ward BMC ‘blind’ to this? Kamlesh Shah

ST. MARTIN ROAD RESURFACING As required by our H/W Ward AMC Mr. Sapkale, to give our complaints under the format provided by him; our ALM has done so. I would like to inform you all that we had given a list of six complaints. We have been promised that all of them will be looked into and action would be taken within seven days. Also any Notices / Correspondence gone into would be provided to our ALM. So far, regarding resurfacing of the by-lane off St. Martins Road, I would like to inform you all that hot mix has been put in some places. The whole road could not be done, as cars are parked in certain places at all times. Mani Patel

SLUM SHIFTING PROMISE It is high time that our new BJP MP keeps up to her election promise of shifting the slums on Bandra Reclamation, Kadeshwari Marg, Ambedkar Road & other prime areas – to clean up Bandra. These are blots on an otherwise wonderful suburb. She should take action, as our elected representative – and humanely shift them to some other place in Mumbai. Unless - of course, she plans to use them as vote banks, too! These are the spots where local criminals live – and that too, without paying for water, electricity and other taxes. Sometimes, I wonder why they are given this privilege – when law-abiding citizens are paying up for everything that they use. This move should be done on a pri-

ority basis – maybe just after the monsoon. Poonam, do not betray our trust in you. Hyder Ali BJP DAYS NUMBERED The day Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi have come to power two months ago at the Centre, the lives of the common people across the country have become hell - with rising prices of all the essential commodities becoming double or triple - and beyond the reach of the people who are already struggling for survival. I strongly feel that PM Narendra Modi is more interested in improving the relationship with other countries rather than improving the conditions of the Indian people. This is nothing but blunder on part of the PM Modi to boost his false image, without bothering about the reality of the situation. The achievement of the BJP in the last two months is bogus, as they have totally failed to control the rising prices & are making false promises to us. To mislead us to the maximum level and to boost their image, they are bringing down the Congress government, on false information. It is high time PM Narendra Modi must think seriously about solving the domestic problems, rather than thinking about international achievements. It is hoped that this political stunt of the BJP government must stop - and they only concentrate on the price rise; failing which, the day is not far, when people of the country will teach them a very strong lesson & wipe them out from the political map of the country, like it happened to the Congress Party in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Feng Shui CHAT Q & A with Maria Hussian Q: My husband & I are looking for a new bed. Is there anything that we should look for when we go out shopping? C. D’Souza A: For a strong marital relationship and personal support, a solid wood headboard is the best option. Try to stay away from metal headboards or ones with mirrors, bars, or slats. If the bed comes with a footboard, the footboard shouldn't extend higher than the top of the mattress. This could slow down your career or progress in life. The double bed mattress must be just a one solid mattress. Two separate mattress pieces creates a hidden split & can have a negative influence on your relationship.

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” William Arthur Ward As we entered the brightly lit room, we were greeted with a warm welcome by a charming Parsee gentleman. This Parsee gentleman had a strange gripping enchantment that held me instantly. Deep in the heart of the city, the humble and polite Shahbehram Khushrushahi conducts his commerce coaching classes. Forced by his father to take up the commerce stream, Shahbehram Khushrushahi completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree while working with the Central Bank of India. Amazed at the respect the auditors received during his tenure with the bank, Shahbehram Khushrushahi was inspired into securing the ‘chartered accountant’ tag to his name. In the final exam held by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, he stood amongst the top fifty students in the whole of India. After passing the professional exam, he decided to settle in Iran – the country of his ancestors. However, three years later he was forced to return to India due to the revolution in Iran. During the revolution, he witnessed many young girls and boys die in front of his own eyes. On asking him if those events, which he personally experienced in Iran, still haunt him, he replied that he had gotten over this and nothing affected him. These little things made him stronger as a person. He vividly remembers the incident which he experienced during his flight from Tehran to Ahwaz with his senior and a partner of the firm with whom he was employed. During the flight there were times when he could see lightening from the plane window very close to the wings of the aircraft. His immediate senior was awestruck and frightened but the partner was peacefully sleeping. His boss seemed completely unaffected by the lightening. On asking, his boss merely replied that ‘everyday thousands are dying on the streets, what difference would it make if a few more (referring to the passengers on board the aircraft) are killed’. “Nothing affects me” says Shahbehram, “that was the attitude at that time; nothing mattered”.

After he returned from Iran, he went to Nigeria for a job. However, he had to return soon due to domestic issues. After returning from Nigeria, he got married. In 1988, he decided to teach and being a commerce graduated started his stint at coaching. In between, he taught at St. Andrews College. He also taught accounting at Arya Vidya Mandir, Bandra. It was during the time of his teaching at the school, that a student from the school scored full marks. Shahbehram believes that today nobody cares to pay small timers. There is a lot of herd mentality prevalent in the society today. What is unique about the way Shahbehram teaches? A student approached him a month before the HSC board exam, knowing nothing about the subject called bookkeeping and accounting. Shahbehram took up the challenge and coached him. When the results were declared, the said student had passed his exams. The student was overwhelmed with joy and profusely thanked his teacher. “The happiness and relief being expressed by the student gave me great pleasure” says Shahbehram. He feels that the pressure over the teachers has increased manifold over the years. Each student is important to him. ‘From 1988 till present, the text books have become thicker, competition has increased manifold and parents more burdened’ says Shahbehram. He further states that “a good teacher is one who should be able to gain the confidence of his students and should be approachable by any student if the need arises”. During the tenure of a teacher, questions about the manner and method of teaching adapted by the teacher are raised. There are many ways of teaching the same concept by different teachers just as there are many routes leading to the same place used by different people coming from different directions. The method adapted by the teacher could be the best under the circumstances and should not be questioned or debated. Everybody has their own understanding capability and hence the teacher teaches them according to their ability to grasp. by Kabeer Khurana Pic by Ethel Misquitta

Q: There is a beam over my bed. I sleep directly under the beam. I suffer from insomnia & headaches. I have read somewhere that it is not good to sleep under a beam? Uma G A: Placing your bed under a beam is a Feng Shui bedroom disaster! A beam that lies above the head, or for that matter, even overhanging shelves or cupboards, can cause headaches & migraines. Exposed beams cre-

ate a downward flow of energy or chi in the space directly below them. The result is an overwhelming sense of pressure. Move the bed…If there's no option to remove the bed or beam, hide the beam with a false ceiling or paint the beam white. This will symbolically make it disappear as it will blend into the ceiling colour. Or, Place or stick two large clear quartz crystals at either end of the beam. The pointed ends of the crystals need to be facing each other. Or, Hang tiny lights along the edge of the beam, so that it symbolically push the energy of the beam upwards. ‘Bhamla Foundation’ recreates the Spirit of Ramadan On Sunday, July 13th 2014 it was pouring. With every drop of rain that hit my head, I could feel it trickling down my the crevices of my brain, lubricating and refreshing me - keeping me alert, robust and enthusiastic at National College, Linking Road, Bandra; where the Asif Bhamla Iftar Party was held. Somehow, the freshness of the air and the spirit of Ramadan enticed me. The feast hall had a subtle whiff of Islamic air. It was a great sight seeing so many people seated together in a grand dinner. I saw it as a rare occasion of unity and brotherhood in a rather diverse country like India. The iftar meal consisted of a sliced banana, khajoor, barbeque, war, juice, biryani and a samosa. With each plate, came a sweet little business card of ‘Silver Point Caterers’. Joshua, Mr. Asif Bhamla’s team assistant and The Nationalist Student’s youngest Congress President, seated beside me; told me about Asif Bhamla and his wonderful social activities. Asif Bhamla was a very gracious host to a crowd of about 500 people. Among

others present, were: Kripa Shankar, Ashish Shelar, Farhan Azmi, Meraj Husain, Honey Khan, Sachin Iyer, Sanjay Patil, Yusuf Abrani, Abis Rizvi, Raza Murad, etc. The scenes of brotherhood between all communities present was heart-warming & interactions were infectious. Incidently, it was Asif Bhamla’s birthday, too. So, later his NCP team got birth-

STOCK MARKETS TO SCALE NEW HIGHS An insight into the Union Budget 2014 The Union Budget can be considered as a reform oriented budget; but not a big bang budget, as was expected by the stock markets. However credit needs to be given to the Finance Minister Arun Jatitley, considering the fact that he had only six weeks in office - and the time was not sufficient enough to incorporate all the reforms that were on the agenda. The budget has provided some relief for tax payers by hiking the exemption limits from Rs. 2 lakhs to Rs. 2.5 lakhs and for senior citizens from Rs. 2.5 lakhs to Rs. 3 lakhs. Also, the limit under Section 80C has been enhanced from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 1.5 lakh, while home loan borrowers have been given relief by raising the exemption limit in the case of housing loan interest, from Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 2 lakh. The budget has also raised the FDI limits in Insurance and Defence to 49% and while GST is expected to roll out by April 2015, DTC will be reviewed. In the infrastructure space, the road sector is being given a boost; with the outlay on the road sector being substantially scaled up. The banking sector (PSUs) is also being given a boost with infusion of further capital to the tune of Rs. 2.4 lakh crore by 2018.

Entrepreneurship is also being encouraged and the government is earmarking Rs . 10,000 crore for start ups. The encouragement of entrepreneurship will help in creating new jobs. The government also plans to focus on financial savings, with a view to discourage savings into physical assets and divert them into financial assets. Financial prudence is also a key area, with the fiscal deficit for FY 15 targeted at 4.1% of GDP. A substantial amount of revenue would be garnered from the disinvestment programme, which has targeted an amount of Rs. 63,425 crore. The overall budget is aimed at expanding the economic activity and in this regard the budget has drawn up a road map for the next five years, with special thrust on infrastructure which in turn will spur economic growth, bring down inflation - and give space to the Reserve Bank of India to lower interest rates. This in turn will spur investment and consumption - the two themes of the ‘Indian growth story’. With the expectations of the resumption of the Indian growth story, the stock markets are expected to scale new highs. by Altina Securities

Fr. Joe Pereira - Yogic Priest & KRIPA Founder receives ‘Life-Time Achievement Award’ from President of India

It was ‘The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’, 26th June, 2014. At a well attended function by Cabinet Ministers, State Ministers, Representatives from the United Nations and distinguished guests, The Hon'ble President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee awarded Fr. Joseph Hilary Pereira the prestigious ‘National Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement by a Professional’, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Mr. Bosco D’Souza, National Programme Director - KRIPA, was selected for the National Award for outstanding services in the field of Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drug) Abuse under the category – "Former Addict who has done outstanding work in the field of awareness generation of de-addiction or rehabilitation." He too received his award from the hands of the President of India. Indeed, it was a red letter day for people of Bandra and beyond. To get an insight of the man behind the news headlines, from a local perspective; Bandra Buzz exclusively interviewed Fr. Joe at his KRIPA Office, in Bandra. Fr. Joe, how did it feel to get the lifetime achievement award from the hands of the President of India? At the first announcement, I was abroad – and I felt that I would not even make it to come and receive that award, because in 2009 when the government gave me the Padma Shree; I thought that it was the height of recognition. Then, they told me that this was a special recognition by the field of social justice and empowerment. I felt that this was a smaller group of

people, but yet they had requested the President to honour us – because this field of addiction has really been very special in the country. Here, KRIPA Foundation has been the largest organization. Therefore, I did not touch on my trip in Europe – and rushed back to take this award. I was really touched by the Government of India. Especially with the new change, I was wondering whether this would really go through. They were not sure till the very last point, as everything had to be whetted by the Prime Minister. I was happy to realise that when he saw my name, he said, “Mai unko jaantaa hoo. Acchaa aadmi hai. Bahoot acchaa kaam kartaa hai, Gandhinagar mae bhe aayaa hai.” This made me feel a little happy about it. How is KRIPA empowering alcoholics & drug addicts? Also, some brief points on your worldwide outreach. The principle of healing that we have here in KRIPA, has been inspired by Mother Teresa. We can only help another, not from our power or position of wealth or possession; but rather by our poverty. And that poverty of the recovering people is that they themselves offer their recovery to enlighten another person struggling with that. So, it’s the concept of a wounded healer. It’s like Jesus, who was a wounded healer. We, all over the world have been spreading this principle. We don’t need professionals: doctors, psychi-

atrists, analysts, etc. for a recovering person. Rather we need this love, where you say that, I am gifted by this gift of recovery – and I would like to share it with you. My brokenness and pain, when I share it with others; I am a wounded person, but when I share it with another person, that person gets healed. This has worked all over the world. I have been controlling and restraining my growth all over the world. For instance, I’ve just come back from China – and at the final day, Guruji’s daughter Geeta Iyengar openly spoke to the 1,500 people there, saying what China needs is more of Fr. Joe. Then, with the Indian ambassador Ashok Kanta there, we are planning to access these rehab centres; which are not really rehab centres, but more like prisons. Then, I’m going to Brazil. I’ve been called to South Africa. I am restraining myself because I have still to build a strong team to go abroad. I have already started to do that. In six different countries we have nominated people who are well qualified for this work. So, that’s my worldwide outreach. What is your vision of KRIPA – when it is 50 years old? Twenty years sobriety from them and they are off with their lives in this work (of helping others). So it is growing … only I attribute this to Mother Teresa. She has grown from 500 to 700 (centres) after her

death. We have grown - from one place here in Bandra, to 77 projects in India and 10 abroad. Within this year we will be 13 abroad. So, it is with Mother Teresa’s grace that the more you reach out to the afflicted and the marginalized, God just blesses this work. Do you have any message to the youth of Bandra? Yes, to the youth of Bandra; I would say, let’s join together because the youth of Bandra should become models of good living, good fun. Keep drugs and mind-altering substances out. Encourage sports. Especially, I really want them to join our group called ‘Friends of KRIPA’. There are people all over the world forming groups called ‘Friends of KRIPA’, where we can project a happy youth a fun-loving youth. In Zurich, we have a clean disco, where we have lovely functions together – minus drugs and alcohol. So, I would like Bandra to lead the country in that kind of a ‘Clean Youth’ campaign. Friends of KRIPA working to bring our youth to do something very constructive, both in sports, in education and in service to the poor. I get people ready to work in Dharavi. I am getting foreigners to work in Dharavi. But, I want youth from Bandra to work in Dharavi – and reach out to teenage prostitutes, street children, etc. So, there is a lot of scope. Bandra youth please wake up – and come and join ‘Friends of KRIPA’. We wish KRIPA, under the visionary Fr. Joe many more empowering years – that is helping to make our world a better place. by Bandra Buzz

Safety Awareness Camp stimulates citizens With the increase of slums and unwanted elements it is becoming a hazard day by day. With politicians turning a blind eye to the influx of Bangladeshi’s and the police not being able to take a stand because of the political pressures it has become more and more obvious that we have to take care of ourselves and our families. Today the demography of the Queen of the Suburbs has changed and will not reverse unless we snatch it back. The long felt need of the residents of the northwestern tri-suburb of Bandra, Khar & Santacruz (BKS) in Mumbai got fructified at last when Zicom in association with “Wake Up Bandra Foundation” had successfully organized a ‘Safety Awareness Camp’ at the Holy Family Hospital at Bandra on Saturday, June 28, 2014. The main objective was to create awareness on safety and security and prepare responsible and vigilant citizens. The camp was attended by more than 60 people which included a posse of police officials, residents from Bandra, Khar, Santacruz heads of NGOs and media persons. Ms. Cynthia Gokhale, Head Marketing Communication, Zicom Electronic Security Systems Limited welcomed the gathering and briefed the audience on the importance of safety in everyday’s life. “Everybody takes safety and security for granted. About 92% of the homeowners in Mumbai though very much concerned about the safety of their children and members of their family yet are unable to know as to how to protect them in times of crisis. So, as part of our CSR initiative, we reach out to the people and educate them on the importance of safety and thereby raising the awareness level,” said she. USEFUL TIPS Mr. Vazim Shaikh and Ms. Uzmaa Sayed

from Advanced Security Training Society Trust, a Trust run by Zicom for educating citizens on Safety and Security, made an interesting tour d’ horizon on the crime scenario in Mumbai through a slick video presentation and demonstration. Their following useful tips can avert many future mishaps: • Do not go to lonely places • Do not wear gold chains visibly open • Do not carry all important documents daily • Do not use mobile phone while crossing the road • Maintain a safe distance, if accosted by a stranger • Walk in the middle of the pavement (sidewalk) • Always shout ‘chor, chor, chor’ (thief, thief, thief) so that the public instantly gets the message and helps in catching the thief or assailant. • Do not take the risk of opening the door in your home immediately. Installation of

video door phone is an ideal solution. • Do not fail to inform the nearby police station of any untoward incident. THE 4 D’S Continuing their presentation on the vital role of technology, Vazim Shaikh and Uzmaa Sayed said people should not become a slave to technology and instead technology should become a slave to people in meeting their daily requirements and making our life easy and safe. Technology is used to accomplish four vital objectives to avert losses: Deter, Detect, Delay and Disrupt. SAFE PLACE Hailing the initiative to organize the ‘Safety Awareness Camp’, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr. Shivajirao Kolekar said, “Despite sporadic incidents of crime, Mumbai is a safe place to live in. It is perhaps the only city in India where women can travel at wee hours in train lonely and

yet safely. As a result of constant vigilance and public cooperation following 26/11/2008 terrorists’ attack, the crime rate in Mumbai had dropped significantly and efforts are on to further bring it down.” Ms. Anandi Thakur, President of Khar Residents Association commended the service of police in her neighborhood & pleaded for the cooperation and support from the public in discharging their duties in times of crises. She disclosed a message on her mobile phone that that she received from a police station which gives full protection to those who travel by cab by tracking it till the passenger safely alights at his/her destination. She said that such positive measures taken by Mumbai police would make it a lovable place to commute anywhere. Mr. Pramoud Rao, Managing Director of Zicom presented gifts to the police officials as a token of appreciation of their dedicated service in protecting people. He narrated an incident of chain snatching involving his neighbour and after that some 2500 cooperative housing societies had come forward and installed CCTV cameras in their society premises. He also urged installation of cameras facing the road as they would further help in reducing the crimes and making the area safe. LIVELY Q & A A lively interactive session followed thereafter in which the participants sought clarifications from the police officials on incidents happened in and around their Co-operative housing societies. Each police officer responded to the questions with aplomb and assurance. The event ended with a small tea party which provided an opportunity for the participants to interact with police officers and heads of NGOs. by Dereyk Talker

Bandra Police protects Police Department family staying in illegal Kadeshwari structure The Bandra Police is protecting family members of the Police department, viz. Dattatrey Kambli and family, who are trespassers of Mary E. Pereira stable (alias Kala Sahib Chawl), Kadeshwari Mandir Road. It’s incredible to note that – The Bandra Police serves a notice under Section 149 of Criminal Procedure Code on Co-Owners (Clifford Cardoz and Ors, of Mary E. Pereira Stable (alias Kala Sahib Chawl), out of which one is Advocate Shane Cardoz - and the other his grandfather Late Shri John Cardoz, who expired about 60 years ago. This matter was taken up in High court of Bombay for quashing, whereby their Lordships Justice Shri A. M. THIPSAY and Shri P.V. HARDAS was surprised and shocked and asked the police department that on what basis such notice can be served on respectable family members, without any past complaints and on a man who is dead for the last 60 years. The Hon’ble Judge requested the police to

withdraw the notice, to which the police answered that the department cannot withdraw the notice, since the Advocate could slap a defamation case on the police department. It was therefore dismissed by the Hon’ble Bombay High Court, stating that the said notice under Section 149 of Criminal Procedure Code on the Co-Owners of Mary E. Pereira Stable, Bandra west; is illegal, arbitrary and unconstitutional. The family Members of the Police Department Mr. Dattatrey Kambli and family claims to be from the Police department and are supported by the police family and forcing the co owners of the Mary E. Pereira stable to stop proceeding against them before the Collectors office, against cancellation of the illegal photo pass acquired by the Kambli family, criminal courts for the assault committed on the co-owners and the BMC for illegal construction done by the Kambli family on Mary E. Pereira Stable.

The co-owners had already carried out demolition with the help of the BMC for the illegal structure but with the help of the ruling political parties and the Police department managed to reconstruct the illegal structure, which is part on the co owners property and part on the public footpath. The Cross Organisation on the basis of complaints made by the local residents against the structure of the Kambli family which part is on the public footpath has filed a PIL bearing no.60 of 2013 for demolition of the said illegal structure, which is pending hearing in the Hon’ble High Court of Bombay. All legal documents can be viewed on bandrabuzz.com/adv-shanecardoz.html The Kambli family are threatening people to file false cases against the coowners of the Mary E. Pereira Stable, advised by the Police Department. Moreover, the Kambli family keeps attacking the co-

owners. When the co-owners go to the police, to make a complaint, the police threatened the co owners with cross complaints. The Bandra Police Station are instigating and supporting the Kambli Family. During every festival the Kambli family creates a ruckus - and no complaints are recorded by the police department. Moreover on Ganesh Chaturti, the Kambli family comes with a mob in front of the door of the co-owners family; park their vehicles - and for an hour or more - beat drums, which are unbearable for the ears and crosses the level of noise pollution. They take this opportunity in the name of the religion. The co-owners of Mary E. Pereira request the Bandra Police Station to be unbiased and take strict action against the Kambli family, even though they are members of the Police Department. by Adv. Shane Cardoz
