Pali Naka Hawkers Get Dangerous The corner of HDFC Bank (opp. Irish House) has become a mini Pali Market where it has grown from a single fruit vendor selling from a basket to 6 - 7 carts. Residents have reported that these hawkers regularly get into fights with each other - and one even pulled out a knife on 3rd February. These hawkers sit in a group making a mess, throwing rotting fruits, seeds and skins on the road. Recently a lady has started selling boiled eggs & dal in paper, which is being frequented by auto rickshaw drivers including traffic cops who stop to eat & throw the waste on the road. When residents tried to correct them, they in turn were abused. Besides being filthy, these hawkers are

a danger to many elderly people, a play school which has tiny tots & many school buses drop & pick kids at the junction leading to traffic jams day-inday-out at peak hours. On one hand, the BMC is doing a good job by demolishing the illegal awnings of the shops along Pali Market - but few hours later, everything is back. On the other hand, they are allowing these miscreants all over the place which could lead to serious injuries if unattended to. Concerned authorities, please act immediately to stop this dangerous hawker menance at Bandra’s Pali Naka area.

India’s first Remote Control Car Racing arena is right here at Pali Hill

Bandra

Are you fond of racing? Are you crazy for cars? Or do you simple like playing with cars? Then you can turn your hobby into a sport. You can channelise your past time to a serious interest. For the first time ever in the whole of India, there is a remote control car racing arena available right in the heart of Mumbai at Bandra, Pali area. So if you have been a video game freak playing NFS and PlayStation all day long, then now is the time for you to actually race on the field and experience the thrill. You can drive your own remote control car, control it yourself and win the race to further participate in the World Cup. Are you still lost and wondering what remote control car racing is all about? Well it is never heard of in India for we have always considered playing with remote control cars as playing with toys as kids. But this perception has changed as RC X Racing, founded by Ashwin Fernandes and Karan Khatri, is the first racing arena in India available for remote control cars. So, you can actually race as there is a huge 900 square feet track available which is specially imported from world’s leading Japanese brand Kyosho. And there a variety of top quality cars available right from Ferrari to McLaren which reverberate the feel of an actual F1 race. You can choose and pick your own remote control car, and with a fine designed controller you can control your cars as they travel on the well furnished track. The track is made of fine synthetic material and has a unique design which Ashwin has himself conceptualised. “Whoever has seen our track design has appreciated us, everybody has found it unique and innovative even through simple photographs on social media,” says Ashwin. In a matter of just two weeks, there have been over 200 racers who have enjoyed the car racing at RC X Racing. And the interesting part is that people of all age groups have visited and enjoyed car racing along with their family and friends. He says, “We have people coming from Powai and Kalina who come in the evening after their work and have a great fun time racing. There have been ‘daddys’ coming with their sons to have a good play time together.” Who said racing is only meant for boys? There have been several number of girls who have visited and tried their hands on car racing at this extravagant place. He admits, “Girls are competitive and enjoy racing, they come with their loved ones so that they can have a good time together and try out a different sport rather than the usual snooker or bowling. Remote control car racing is quite different and easy to pick up.” And soon bikes will be added to the bunch of cars so that bike lovers too can race enthusiastically. ‘Remote Control Car Racing is not just a game, it is sport and it can pay you well in life’ is what Ashwin firmly believes as he

has been into remote control car racing since his youth. Well, in India people are not aware but this sport has a huge acclaim all over the globe. In Japan, Remote control car racing is considered as a prestigious sport and a lot of people make their career in this field. “In Japan, this sport is their bread and butter. There are remarkable racers and they are all sponsored by big brands. And this is because they keep practicing this sport every day as their hobby,” he explains. So if you think you are inclined towards cars and have a flair for car racing then Ashwin has opened the doors for you. You can rent a car or even buy a car online or directly from RC X Racing and enhance your interest. Also there is Remote Control Car Racing World Cup that happens every year and four representatives from each nation participate in it. This year RC X Racing has been invited and Ashwin is on the look for the best racers to compete at the World Cup. “I want to position India on the world map in remote control car racing. It is a unique kind of sport but it is fun. I just want more and more people to try it out and you never know, you might just be lucky to make a career instead of following the normal career paths,” claims Ashwin.

A young entrepreneur, who has thought and acted out of the box, Ashwin Fernandes has created a space for a new sport in the whole of India. RC X Racing is the only racing space in the whole of our nation that has a huge size racing track with top quality cars and spacious environment. Moreover, racing over there leads to socialisation as you can meet people of all walks of life. So if your child is a computer game geek, this racing arena will help him to enjoy his hobby in the open nature, get out of the house a bit and explore his/her horizon. Ashwin concludes, “Some people are glued

to their computer games, but a sport is always fun if played out in the open. You groom yourself when you play out door. And remote control car racing can interest anyone. You play it once, and you will want to play it again.” RC X Racing @ Mac Queens Banquets Mac Ronells Bungalow, St. Andrews Road, Pali Hill, Bandra West, Mumbai - 400 050 Timings : 11am - 11pm (Monday closed) Contact : 9769958811 / 9820134411 www.rcxracing.in Ronald Rodrigues

College. But his wit and hunger for knowledge didn’t stop there; he then gained a Masters Degree in Industrial Psychology from the Mumbai University and today conducts corporate training sessions and gender awareness during his free time. He also uses his public speaking skills to spread awareness about the LGBT community and hosts various events for the same.

It is not about sexual orientation, it is about the choice that you make… Who says gays or anyone from the LGBT community can’t progress in life? Sushant Divgikar won the Mr. Gay India accolade in 2014 and represented India at the Mr. Gay World 2014 and won several awards there too. He was the first Indian to win these honours at a young age as he was just 24 years old then. Later in 2014, he entered the reality show ‘Big Boss Season 8’ as a celebrity contestant. He also hosted a web show called ‘Backseat with Sushant’ which was directed by ex head MTV Cyrus Oshidar. A model, singer, karaoke specialist, dancer, VJ, host and a profound orator, Sushant has paved his way far beyond his sexual orientation to success and self respect. He claims, “I am gay, so what? How does it matter to you? It is my choice; don’t I have the right to choose my style of living?”

Be straight forward, ignore a few and prove yourself to the rest… Discrimination, downfall and mockery are all a part of life. In this competitive world, we often find the ‘Crab effect’ where people try to pull each other down. They just can’t see others succeeding in life. Sushant too faced some kind of discrimination when he entered the entertainment industry. He encourages, “There will always be people who will make fun of you but just ask yourself - ‘Do they matter?’ In fact you should use this mockery positively, prove yourself to them and emerge victorious. Talent speaks for itself so be candid and maintain your self respect.” Unity lacks in the LGBT community… The LGBT community in India is now gaining some kind of space and respect in the society due to various laws and policies implemented by the government. Still India has a long way to go. Corporate and professional industry has still not accepted eunuchs. A lot of gay and lesbian celebrities too are hiding their sexual orientation. He admits, “The LGBT community has a lot of indifference, jealousy and politics within, this should wipe out so that we can stand as one family against the rest.”

Parents and friends play a major role more than the society… Parents are the ones who affect a child’s life profusely be it a kid, teen or even an adult. Often, kids and teens confide in them after going through all their peer groups and close pals. “When a parent accepts you the way are, it gives you confidence to face the unwelcoming society. Friends also act as significant players because as teenagers and youth we are more comfortable with friends than parents,” he highlights.

Do not Fake it to Make it… A celebrity at a young age of 25, Sushant still makes his way in an autorickshaw or a BEST bus. While a lot of celebrities in India find it middle class to travel in a public transport, Sushant believes in being humble and true to himself in every little thing. “Travelling in an autorickshaw does not make you small or poor. You are still the

Buzz

How does it matter if your child is a boy or girl or a homosexual as long as he or she is ‘your own kid’? People accept physically challenged, mentally challenged, deformed or special kids with arms wide open, then why not accept a gay or a lesbian? Is life all about sexual orientation?

Come out of the closet… It is difficult to come out of closet and accept yourself the way you are. He believes, “My father and mother accepted me willingly when I revealed my sexual orientation to them. This boosted my morale to a great extent because the ones who mattered to me had embraced me lovingly, so I didn’t care about the rest of the world who didn’t even know me.” But this is not the case with everyone, a lot of youngsters and teens today commit suicide because they are not accepted by their near ones due to their sexual orientation and their choice of living. Sushant believes that life is worth much more, and nobody can get back your life once you end it. Suicide is a grave end, and death is the only thing in this world that cannot be replaced.

same celebrity. And everybody, be it a celebrity or a star has reached the point of honour and fame only after travelling through these phases of life when faced with poverty. Nobody has become a celebrity overnight,” he admits.

yourself… Having spent his childhood, teenage and his youth in Bandra, Sushant has been a Bandra boy as he studied in AVM School at Bandra West. Further, he completed his graduation in Psychology from Mithibai

A masterpiece of the Almighty filled with spell bound talent, a combination of beauty with brains, a humble celebrity who has tasted the highest point of success yet has his feet grounded, Sushant Divgikar is a true inspiration for all the youngsters who are still hiding their sexual orientation. “Be what you are instead of being what you are not. Don’t live as someone else. You are special and unique in your own way,” concludes Sushant Divgikar. Ronald Rodrigues

Fashion is how you wear and carry it more than what you wear... Mumbai is known to be a sole hub of fashion accessories, clothing and attires. Sushant, being a Fashion Model himself, wears both branded and simple clothes. He picks up clothing from Hill Road and Link Road and from branded stores too. "You should always buy according to your budget. Because at the end of the day it is your pocket that is crunched just for a little showoff. Fashion depends on how you carry yourself more than which brands you carry," he explains.

Are You Drinking Cancer?

News > Bandra Buzz

It surely sounds frightening, but the fact of the matter is that it is TRUE. Several thousands of ‘educated Indians’ have fallen prey to TV and print media ads, that suggest drinking a seemingly cheap famous local brand of Aloe Vera juice - every morning on an empty stomach. This concoction is supposed to detox your body and create better health. Yet, in reality this routine makes your health factor a distant dream. Here is exactly what happens. Aloe has a tendency to penetrate (on our skin, it penetrates to the third layer - i.e. our hypodermis) deep. As the plastic used by local manufacturers is of the cheapest grade (the type used for phenyl and other toilet cleaning detergent bottles), over a period of time, the aloe juice leaches dangerous chemicals from the plastic container, and the juice will soon have dissolved plastic that we unknowingly drink. Hence, in addition to the harsh fertilizer chemicals used to hasten the growth unnaturally, your local aloe juice also contains cancer-causing carcinogens that will surely ruin your good health - contrary to the health benefits you expect. However, the good news is that safe and pure Aloe Vera gel (concentrated juice) is available in India, 100% natural and imported - not re-bottled and from a known, globally certified and trusted source. The

bottle is the best food-grade virgin plastic so no dangerous leaching. No bad side-ef-

fects. No drinking cancer. Yes, just send an SMS: ALOE to 9619353616. Here’s to your

Felix D'souza of St. Cyril road turns 100, celebrates with a party

Bandra

Meet Bandra's very own centurion, Mr. Felix Lyons D'souza who turned a 100 only a few days ago on the 31st of January, celebrating his birthday in the company of a 120 guests in a small celebration at the Chez Nous back-court yards. A 100 years, now most would be curious to know his secret to long life, well he did not smoke, well he did as a Bachelor but then quit on getting married and that was a long while back, when it came to alcohol, Felix was a party drinker, indulging in a drink or two on the occasion of a celebration and his poison of choice was Whiskey, Mrs. Placida Dantas the daughter of Mr. Felix was kind enough to share a few words with the Bandra Buzz. She told us that he was a man of few words "Inhale the future without any expectations, Hold on to the present and exhale the past without regret." that was his anthem, he never kept anything in his mind, that was usually a bone of contention to his wife as he never reacted to a grumble in-

stead he would try and fizzle it down with a joke. His famous phrase was 'Give a Jalebi smile.' His recipe for anything wrong? 3 Hail Mary's, if anyone came to him about a problem he would say "Don't worry, just say 3 Hail Mary's and whatever will happen will be for the best." Placida joked on that they would always ask him to say those 3 Hail Mary's for them, if something went missing or there was a problem, 3 Hail Mary's was the solution. Felix loved housie, he would play it regularly not only at the Bandra Gym but at Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana and Mahim and other places too. He played housie till the age of 96. He worked at the Hotel Hilltop, Worli till the ripe age of 92, his employers (The Mehra's) fondly wanted him to continue, offering to even bring a car to pick him up but age would choose for it to be time for him to put up his boots, Felix's dedication to work is one to be admired he worked for Mumbai (Bombay) Port Trust for 35 years, leaving at the age of 58, he was then immediately operated on for appen-

dicitis and started working again a week later for the Mehra's group of hotels, over the decades enjoying a fondness with Mr. Rakesh Mehra who holds a great deal of affection for Mr. Felix. Such was the fondness of the Mehra's for Mr. Felix that he even inaugurated a hotel for them. Walking was another thing he did regularly, till the age of 92 Felix traveled by BEST bus, and there are about 80 steps at Worli leading to the hotel which he would walk every day to. A survivor of the Big Ex-

plosion at Ballard Pier in the 1940's in which he was wounded. Felix has one daughter Placida Dantas and 2 grand daughters Désiree and Daniella. Longevity seems to run in the family as Felix also has a younger brother Alex, who is 93 years old residing in the US and he only just stopped driving at the age of 92. Bandra Buzz would like to wish Mister Felix a very Happy Belated Birthday from all of us here. Wayne Lemos

Vency Lobo does the ‘Magic with his Music’ after a tiring day at work at Carter Road Bandra is known to be a land of music, dance and fun. Traditional enjoyment, classical merry making and love for music are deeply rooted in the whole environment of Bandra. And the best part is that both the young and old enjoy this culture and lifestyle of Bandra to the fullest. Amidst this eccentric feature of Bandra, if you walk through the beautiful Carter Road past 9 pm, you will suddenly hear a melodious classy music. Then when you tune your ear towards it, you will soon start following the music to realise that it is a pop song. And when you step in the direction of the song, you will notice a peculiar man all decked up with dazzling clothes and appealing attire playing the accordion. That’s Vency Lobo, the accordion player of Bandra, one whose music will melt your heart and make you fall in love with it. Vency was no born musician. Being a Bandra boy since birth, Vency was astonished when he noticed few sisters learning the accordion in his neighbourhood at St. John Baptist Road. It was the early 80s and Vency was only 25 years old when he began learning the accordion from his teacher Mr. Rego. Vency was a slow learner. He recollects, “It was a very tough organ for me as it needed coordination of both the hands as well as ears. In addition, pressure had to be applied from one end and synchronisation was very important.” He just couldn’t get it and gave up in the first week itself. But, his teacher was firm and gave Vency a simple mantra - ‘Practice before the mirror, see yourself, look at yourself and you will get it!’ Vency practiced for days together, spending long hours standing in front of the mirror with his accordion round his neck. Finally, he learned the chords, and then there was no stopping. From chords he further went to learn songs. With each lesson, he learned a new song. And, soon mastered the accordion completely and started writing his own notes. He compiled notes for various songs and realised that they sounded correct. So much so that

today after spending around 35 years in music, he can play with his eyes closed; his hands, fingers & his whole body automatically moves in the tune of the instrument. Right from jive numbers to carols and hymns, hindi and konkani old hits to spanish and portuguese songs, Vency can play pop music elegantly. And, learning is an ongoing process. So he stills keeps learning. “Though I have spent my entire life in music there is still a lot to learn, I still go for music classes and often discover some new music,” admits Vency. Working as the Senior Auditor of the Central Government for the Indian Navy, Vency works efficiently from 9am - 6pm every day just like any other corporate employee. The only major difference is that you & I after work just want to rush home and rest. The moment we leave from office, we want to travel quickly and reach home to lie on our bed as soon as possible. But Vency even at the age of 58 is way different. He returns from office everyday travelling all the way from CST to Bandra, only to reach home, pick up his accordion and set out at Carters to entertain and spread his music. “I have everything in my life, a good job, a spacious house and good clothing. I can rest all my life, but music refreshes me, I don’t feel tired at all,” he claims. Though you may see a hat bedside him in which people toss money, he clearly exclaims, “I don’t do it for money. I get my one meal a day that is enough for me. I don’t want anything more.” In fact, often Vency distributes chocolates to all the kids at Carters just to get a smile on their face. He says, “Music is my passion. It is something that rejuvenates my whole being. It refreshes me, energises me, calms me, and soothes me. I am addicted to music for it is like a drug in my life. And I am using this drug to spread happiness.” Vency wants to help the cancer patients at TATA Memorial Hospital by collecting funds through his music. He says, “I can’t do much, but I can do something. Little kids are suffering from cancer, I feel for

them and I want to help them.” He is striving to get the permission from the hospital so that he can collect funds freely without any police interference. An inspiration immersed in humility and love, Vency Lobo can make you smile, laugh and cry with his soothing music. An

aged personality of Bandra, still quite young at heart and a master at his talent is just driven by the mission of spreading love and happiness in every little way possible. “All I want to do is spread happiness,” concludes Vency. Ronald Rodrigues

The Republic Day Parade 26th January held at Bandstand went of spectacular, it was truly an event worth bragging about and many will hold memories dear, Peter deSouza the gentleman behind the brain child concept gave Bandra Buzz the whole walk through. With this parade keeping a highlight on our armed forces, in keeping with that the Chief Guest was Vice Admiral R. Hari Kumar, AVSM VSM (Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command), the senior most representative of the Indian Air Force in Mumbai was also in attendance Air Vice Marshal Anil Golani (Air Officer Commanding HQ, Maritime Air Operation), Brigadier R S Rathore (Head of Administration for Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa Headquarters), MLA Adv.

Ashish Shelar graciously filled in as the Guest of Honor at the last minute as MP Poonam Mahajan was unable to attend as her flight was delayed on account of fog, she requested the organizers to approach Adv. Ashish Shelar to take the pledge and he graciously accepted. After the stage ceremony the parade kicked off with the horses riders from the 'Amateur Riders Club', they were followed by the cyclists that were there to spread an eco friendly message along with promoting cycling, the riders were carefully selected and students had to qualify to enter this group, 23 schools from all over Mumbai participated in this parade. The children had to undergo march practice for almost two months

under the N.C.C., Colonel Maxwell Roberts was the N.C.C. Group Commander in charge of getting all the schools ready to march for the parade. And Mr. Elias Correia (St. Stanislaus) was the co-ordinator for marching. The host school of the 2016 Republic Day Event was Rizvi Springfield High School (Head Mistress - Ms. Rajni K. Patil). The main sponsor being Abdul Rehman Vanoo (Chairman of the Hind Foundation). The N.C.C. followed St. Stanislaus that was represented by the N.C.C. Junior Air Division Air Wing (Stanislaus is the only school in Bandra that has the N.C.C.). There were schools from Byculla to Wadala and SantaCruz, Mazagon. So while the organizing committee is known as the Bandra Inter School Republic Day Commit-

tee or 'B.I.R.D.' it has changed to 'Brehan Mumbai' on account of all the schools out of Bandra. The parade also saw two truck floats the first was created by Anjuman-I-Islam's Saif Tyabji Girls' High School and Junior College and its prime focus was 'stopping of animal cruelty' that on the suggestion of Mrs. Poonam Mahajan who does a lot for the prevention of cruelty to animals, Fr. Agnel brought in a truck float focusing on the 'Make In India' initiative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this was followed by Fire Brigade trucks and then there was the chance for students and the general public to interact with the armed forces. Stalls were put up of the Air Force, Army and Navy so

children could experience the weapons first hand and interact with them & the soldiers, the two main weapons present on the road were the Mobile Missile Coastal Battery of the Navy, the L/70 Bofors gun of the army, Mr. Peter deSouza mentioned that the parade hopes to bring to light the fact that the armed forces are an important part of our nation and its because of them that we sleep peacefully at night, and to show school children that the armed forces is about 'protecting' and not about 'fighting'. The students were finally treated to breakfast at the Taj Lands End courtesy of the General Manager Mr. Parveen Chander Kumar that extended hospitality to 900 marchers. A well deserved treat after 2 months of marching practice.

Peter deSouza graciously took us further back to the origins of the Republic Day Parade stating that the whole concept started in 2013 and this one now in 2016 was his third, the first one was small in comparison and held on Hill Road, after that got recognized by the Governor things started to move, Stanislaus had celebrated its 150th Anniversary and at that time they came up with the idea of a joint parade, as they had earlier had a parade with the Armed Forces inside the school with the N.C.C., since they had the military at that time an idea struck Peter "Why not do this with other schools on the road." for that they needed an occasion to do a joint function. So Peter along with Fr. Jude and Mr. Elias Correia then went and

gave presentations to all the schools of Bandra, normally each school has their own program, the idea stuck and they did their first program on Hill Road from Globus to St. Stanislaus. This enjoyed a overwhelmingly positive response with many parents and schools passing complements, this brought up the idea of having the next program on a larger and grander level 'Bigger and Better' as Peter says, and after looking at various roads they settled on Bandstand. The last program in 2014 was very different, there they had the Army Band and the Rapid Action Force Marching, a cultural event was held at the midway garden, this unfortunately got a lot of complaints and the number of people that were unable to view it

greatly outnumbered the number of people that were able to view it. In 2015 Peter got the principals invited by the Ministry of Defense to Delhi to witness the parade there, where they sat adjacent to Obama's block, having viewed the parade in Delhi it was then further decided to have the next one (2016) in Bandra on similar lines. Where the flag hoisting would be held at the start, truck floats would also introduced for 2016, taking the place of the stage performance held in 2014, the 2016 formula allowed for everyone to have a chance to see the festivities. They certainly did a grand job of 2016, that's for sure. Wayne Lemos

Bandra

Bandra was home to a little photography exhibition hosted on 27th and 28th January 2016, held at the Bus depot near the railway station, the exhibition organised by the C.R.H. (Committee for the Right to Housing) was of a collection of photos taken of slums (also called Informal Communities according to C.R.H.), what was interesting was that these photographs on exhibit were taken by the children living in the slum areas themselves. The goal was to attempt to depict pictures which narrated deprivations, neglects and even celebrations in their communities, the hope was the exhibition would raise a little public awareness and hopefully that the proper authorities would turn a glance of positive concern towards these communities that many felt were being ignored, the sad result of this ignorance is the lack of quality of life that the children have to live, from lack of playgrounds to density related problems, lack of water and sanitation among others, the children were trained in photography at a workshop held in Dec. 2015 and thereafter went out and documented their settlements giving us the photos that were up on exhibit. The settlements covered were ďŹ ve in all Behrampada, Indira Nagar, Garibnagar, Shastrinagar and Dnyaneshwar Nagar.

Bandra Buzz visited the exhibition outside Bandra Station on 28th January only to discover it was not present anymore. When we contacted Shweta Damle (the Host at the exhibition) we found out that the authorities had asked them to vacate, that is in spite of having the required permissions, the authorities stated that their presence was a hindrance to traďŹƒc and hence needed to vacate. Shewta invited us to visit and view the photos and discuss the exhibition and the aims and goals of the project and we intend to do so in the near future, Shewta also told us that they planned on

having another exhibition in the future, if they get all the permissions, and this one she said they wanted to have at the Railway Hall so more people could attend and it would pose no inconvenience to traďŹƒc and authorities, this time they wanted to advertise for it a little more, for the exhibition held on the 27th and 28th of January it was only advertised a bit on Facebook, postings on Bandra prominent pages to let people know would also be in the cards for the next exhibition to let more people especially those in and around Bandra know about it.

What was also interesting was the ability to learn and skill sets that the children displayed thereafter with this exhibition, this clearly shows that they are intelligent creative expressive minds, ready to absorb like a sponge only in need of a positive environment, the issue that they are pointing out via photos is this deprivation of just that & that a little attention from the right places could radically change things for the betterment of quality of life of these children aiding in a chance at a better future for them. Letters to the Editor

Dear Reader, In the euphoria of a brand new year, a full first month has slipped by - and we will soon be on the threshold of spring - with that ‘love in the air’ feeling in mid February, peaking on the 14th - Valentine’s Day. On this day, Bandra and her surrounding suburbs are all lovey-dovey - with couples flooding coffee shops, restaurants and clubs. Traffic snarls start from early evening. Candle-Lit Dinner Dates are the long-awaited prize for loving partners, who want to seal the deal. Before all this, we have Carnival Festivals being held in at least three venues: Bandra Gym, Stanislaus Back Ground and the Rest Ranwar Ground. These events give ample opportunity for community connect - and are a joy to watch. Here, King Momo, creatively themed floats, public parades, marching bands, etc. - that take entertainment to a new level. For the rest - who are not fortunate to be part of all this, it is routine work as usual. Hectic shopping, traffic jams, mundane meetings are the order of the day. Yet, with warmer weather & clear skies, many like to take a break from their busy schedule; by going to a park, or either Reclamation, Bandstand or Carter Promenade - to enjoy the wide open spaces of the great outdoors.

Most of this traffic then continues on to St. Sebastian Road. Here speed breakers are required at the junction of St. Sebastian Rebello Road and Dr. Peter Dias Road. I have sent a similar letter to the Inspector of Police, Traffic and we also have a signature campaign going on for this vital local issue, to garner more public support and get the concerned authorities to take appropriate action for the safety of citizens. For signature campaign forms and more info please call 9820320994. Warren Fernandes

CHIMBAI KHALLA Chimbai Khalla behind St. Paul Road and Dilkhush building was an open green area owned by the Collector and used by fisher folk for drying fish. In the mid 1990s, much of this area got encroached by illegal builders aided by local politicians. Today most of this open public space is occupied by illegal structures and poses a major security, health and fire hazard. There are a few small open blocks still not encroached thanks to the active intervention of ALM members. Over the past several years, ALM members with the help of concerned authorities have saved these spaces at least a dozen times. We are now really concerned that once again unscrupulous elements have begun construction and in spite of complaints to various authorities work continues unhindered. This can only mean that these slum lords are being protected by unknown elements. We seek the help of our MLA - Adv. Ashish Shelar in demolishing the work under construction and also take action to protect these areas by planting trees. We also seek help in resolving the illegal garbage dumping on junction of St. Paul and Dominic road opposite Dilkhush Building. Most of the residents from Chimbai Khalla are using this as a garbage dump. Concerned citizens are expecting immediate action on these issues. Glen D’Costa, Chairperson - ALM 102

SPEED BRAKERS NEEDED A speed breaker & traffic/pedestrian light is needed at Chapel Road, outside Mt. Carmels, due to the following reasons: • Accident Prone Area: Many accidents, including loss of lives have taken place due to speeding and non-stop traffic coming from the Sea-Link. The latest accident is of my mother, Mrs. Priscilla Fernandes on 20th November 2015 whose skull was fractured and she is still house-bound. • Risk to lives of Mt. Carmel Parishioners: Mt. Carmel Church has approximately 6000 parishioners and it is becoming very difficult to cross the road here, when they come to worship. The lives of all these people are at risk. • Risk to lives of School Children: St. Aloysius school has approx. 1000 children and the lives all these children are at risk while crossing the road in front of the school.

LET LOVE SPRING FORTH

Meanwhile, a lot of good work is being done towards a better Bandra-Khar-Santacruz by our activists and social workers - some doing it selflessly, others with an eye on the upcoming BMC Corporator Elections 2017. This is prime time to get your local civic issues solved, as the need for visibility and goodwill by to-be-contestants is the prime factor, now - before the battle begins. Till next time, take care.
