BANDRA TALAO TUSSLE The Bandra Talao is a small lake, located near the Bandra Railway Station. In earlier times, it was also called ‘Motha Sarovar’ and at times known as ‘Lotus Tank’. This Talao is more than 200 years old - and is a Grade II heritage structure. Area wise, it is spread across more than 7 acres. Just gazing at the entire waters, gives you a sense of serenity. Today, it is in the eye of the storm. Recently, the ‘credit clash’ between the Congress, BJP and Shiv Sena has heightened – each highlighting their contribution towards making efforts to make this project happen. The Congress beat the BJP-Shiv Sena, who had planned a inauguration in the first week of December – and went ahead with the inauguration on 29th November 2014. This has led the BJP-Shiv Sena to react; calling it “unofficial” - and that

many “changes” will need to be made to the project plans, suggesting that there would soon be an official inauguration of the project by the Mayor of Mumbai, Snehal Ambekar. UPGRADATION OF BANDRA TALAO The much awaited upgradation & beautification of Swami Vivekanand Sarovar (Bandra Talao) is to begin soon, after a delay of around five years. This has been made possible, after the constant, rigorous efforts & follow ups of Ms. Priya Dutt Ex-MP & Mr. Baba Siddique Ex-MLA during their tenure; along with Mr. Asif Zakaria (during his previous term) and now Ms. Karen D’Mello, the current local Municipal Corporator, Ward # 96. MLA Ashish Shelar attends ‘SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN’ to make Grand Dutta Jayanti Utsav 2014 Bandra Police Station Citizen Friendly Bandra Police Station needs to ‘WAKE UP’. Bad experiences of law-abiding citizens at Bandra Police Station (and Khar, too) have reached intolerable limits. Enough is enough. People need security, not excuses. Complaints of police dissuading people from filing complaints are pouring in. Is there a COP-CRIMINAL Nexus? Everyone has had, or knows somebody who has had very bad interaction; at the Bandra Police Station. In view of this, a signature campaign is going on in Bandra, to show the strength of people who agree with this. If you agree, please get a printout of the format below from: www.bandrabuzz.com/bps-sig.html, get it filled and signed – and arrange to send it to Warren Fernandes (MOB: 98203 20994), on or before 5th Jan 2015 Your prompt action, can make citizens in your neighbourhood more secure. Aashirvad Krida Mandal (Vandre) organized a Grand Dutta Jayanti Utsav on 6th Dec 2014 at the Jain Mandir Road. The Mandal President, Rajan Parab told us that the programme commenced with a Satya Narayan Maha Puja, followed by free Bhandara (4,000 devotees of all communities ate food together). Manglesh Mhapsekar added that on 7th Dec there were sports and games for children – and on the final day, i.e. 8th Dec there were cultural programmes presented by children. Among the attendees were MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar, Deuty Mayor Alka Kerkar, MC Taveer Patel, Ex-MC Adv. Deepak Padwal, Shiv Sena Vibhag Pramukh Sudesh Dube,

Shakha Pramukh, Ward # 97 Sandeep Metkar and Oup Shakha Pramuk Ward # 97 Dinesh Parab; along with a host of dignitaries, who came to take the blessings of Bhagwan Duttaji. At this occasion, Ashishji thanked his supporters and wished those present a very Happy New Year. Then, the President Rajan Parab and Mandal Secretary Manglesh Mhapsekar thanked the Youth Brigade; which consisted of around 50 volunteers, that included Reetish Parab, Prasad Jangan, Sarthak Kubde, Anuj Gupta and others. He said that they tirelessly worked towards making this programme a big success. Rajan Parab

Bandra Talao Tussle

The proposed upgradation includes: - Cleaning The Water - Amphitheatre - Lilly Ponds - Flower Beds - Musical Water Fountains - Boating Facilities - Security Cabin - Street Furniture, etc. This upgradation & beautification will help in creating one more open space for the public at large, for which the BMC has made a provision fund of Rs. 5 Crore. It is pertinent that the Bandra Talao be used for recreation by the public at large - and hence the maintenance of the same would be in the public eye; rather than just making it ornamental. Hence, keeping the ‘heritage angle’ in mind, a suspended boardwalk on all sides of the talao is also proposed, for people to walk around - thereby not distributing the large water body. PROJECT INAUGURATION The inauguration of this project was conducted on Saturday, 29th November 2014 in the presence of Ms. Priya Dutt Ex-MP, Mr. Baba Siddique Ex-MLA, Mr. Devendra Amberkar, Leader of the Opposition, MCGM, Ms. Priyatama Sawant, Chairperson, H/East & H/West Ward Committee, local Municipal Councillors; incuding local residents such as Mrs. Savita Mehra - Dr. Peter Dias Road, Mrs. Shyama Kulkarni – AGNI Trustee, Mrs. Bharati Kakkad - Union Park, Mrs. Madhu

Above: Ms. Priya Dutt, Mr. Baba Siddique, Mr. Devendra Amberkar & Priyatama Sawant inaugurate Bandra Talao Poplai - Pali Hill, Mr. Cornel Gonsalves - Secretary Salsette Catholic Society and Mr. John Soares - St. Andrews Road; along with many other local residents of Bandra and Khar. Bandra Buzz spoke to locals to get their viewpoints on this project. Here are some interesting interactions: “Ashish Shelar had the Bandra Lake beautification as one of his poll promises. Now, that he is our MLA – should he not be allowed to fulfill his promise? Let us see his capabilities. I am sure he has some innovative ideas.” Karim Khan

“It was Asif Zakaria, when he was the Municipal Corporator of Ward # 96 in his previous term; who initiated the project, pushing it forward with the help of the then MLA Baba Siddique & the then MP Priya Dutt. Can their several years of efforts go in vain?” Geeta Malkani “I am not interested who takes credit for the Bandra Talao beautification project. As long as it becomes a healthy and safe spot for common citizens like us, to relax and get rejuvenated; its fine by me. Please see that our tax money is well spent

– without creating another scam” Behram Daruwalla Even as the Bandra Talao Tussle is going ‘full steam’, the end-result is all that matters. Once completed, the Bandra Talao (which is an important landmark of Bandra) will get surely back its much deserved pride & glory. We ask our readers to send us their valuable feedback on this issue. Letters to the Editor

IT’S OUR 4th ANNIVERSARY

‘NO PARKING’ – EVERYWHERE ? ‘NO HAWKING’ – NOWHERE ? It is surprising that ‘No Parking’ signs are springing up everywhere. Recently, Hill Road (Hawkers Paradise) has new No Parking Signs on BOTH sides of the road. Opposite Nature’s Basket has a No Parking sign, but hawkers are allowed to "park" their stands. If you remember, this was a parking zone a month ago. Our authorities putting No Parking signs on both sides of the road and at close proximity to one another, near Forever Living Products, C’est La Vie Club, Holy Family Hospital, etc. is totally ridiculous and a wrong decision. Where do vehicles park? People will surely protest against such actions – especially when a hawker (who is supposed to have a BMC license – WHO GAVE IT TO HIM, in the first pace?) is blatantly right next to the Police Van on the corner of Hill Road & Prof. Almeida Road. Is the Law blind, silly or cleverly cheating citizens – who have given up on justice and truth – in this corrupt system, we call government? The BMC & Traffic Cops of Bandra Division need to pull up their socks – and do their duty, or else, face the wrath of an angry public protest, starting a social revolution. Where have the NO HAWKING signs gone? Can our Councillors / new MLA get them back? We voted for complete change – now it is our birthright to have it. Hope our precious vote has not gone in vain. Cyrus Khambata ‘THE MOUNT OF FAITH’ SELECTED Our documentary film on Mount Mary Church Bandra, titled ‘The Mount of Faith’, has been selected for the Jaipur International Film Festival. A total 1807 entries for this festival from 90 countries from which a selection of 158 were made and Our film is one among the 158. The awards are in February. Hope that we top even from the final 158. Congrats to the whole team and a big thank you to all our well wishers. Lavy Bernard Pinto

UNAUTHORIZED SRK RAMP Despite knowing the fact that the ramp constructed by Shahrukh Khan is illegal and constructed blatantly in violation of CRZ regulations - and despite repeated reminders from Ex- CM and the present CM and Watchdog Foundation; it is shocking that no action is being taken. Similarly, the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority has deliberately failed and neglected to take action against the said unauthorised construction. This defiance and intentionally contemptuous behaviour shown by you and others smacks of impropriator and does not augur well. Needless to state that such attitude on part of authorities is unknown in administrative circles and calls for an expeditious enquiry by the concerned authorities. This is put you on record that this will be used as an evidence, in the Criminal Complaint filed by Nicholas Almeida in the Metropolitan Magistrate's 12th Court, Bandra, Mumbai. The case is now kept for arguments on 24th December 2014 at 3.00 pm, which please note. We kindly request demolition of the SRK ramp - immediately. Adv. Godfrey Pimenta MR. ASHISH SHELAR I have read the Bandra Buzz, November, 2014 - It is important that Mr. Ashish Shelar provides his email address so issues can be directed to him directly and let's hope he is able to genuinely take action against issues that trouble this area. I sincerely doubt whether Mr. Ashish Shelar is genuinely capable of handling most issues because the nexus between the political heavy weights and the corrupt officials and the powerful criminals is too deep rooted. I dare a simple task like getting high end cars towed away which are parked for months together right under no parking signs and on both sides of the road on 37th Road, Bandra behind National College- belonging to Lucky Motors a.k.a M-Company and now under some other name. I have complained to the top cops over the past few years, complained to BMC, complained to the office of the Home minister so apparently this person has enough clout or else the concerned departments I complained about don't really care about the ordinary citizen. Let us see if Mr. Shelar is able to take up such a simple task by penalising - not a warning to this person. Otherwise all promises and no action is what Mr. Shelar is doing. Anonymous Indian

Dear Readers, December in Bandra is something special. The cool weather adds to the festive ambience – while shopping streets seem special this time of the year. Yes, Christmas is round the corner. With complex plans being put into action – for that ‘special event’, the countdown to the New Year gets closer; each passing second. Bandra has the good, the bad & the ugly. Luckily it is in the same order, so we have a lot more good going around. This year, Bandra has seen a lot of change in the powers-that-be. BandraBuzz has been giving you news coverage – with interesting insights about happenings in and around your neighbourhood. Most people feel that good times are around the corner. But, the million dollar question is: How far is the bend towards that corner. Actually, putting pressure on the right buttons, by the right type of people; can help resolve issues in record time. However, the resolve to do it (by our elected representatives) is important – and the guts to go ahead and DO IT. Let’s co-operate and help them make it happen. This issue has 4th Anniversary Greetings from many of our ‘Well Wishers’; those, who have always stood by us – through thick and thin. We at BandraBuzz thank them for their solid support, even when we started from scratch; with humble beginnings. Their trust in our ability to deliver is highly appreciated. With this issue, we begin our fifth year of existence. We’re happy that this newspaper IS making a difference to the lives of people – from the touching feedback we receive. A fifth publishing year is always special, as it is the five fingers that together form a fist. We all know the difference between the pushing power of a single finger – and the punch of our fist. Well, with our team of contributing writers, photographers, reporters, advertisers, admin, well wishers and most importantly, you – my dear reader; BandraBuzz has created an impact in multiple ways. We continue to insist on giving you un-biased news, views and reviews – and let our readers decide, who and what is right. We can only warn and inform you, but the final decision is yours. May you have a Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year, with many more to come. Till next year, take care. Merck N. D’Silva Editor-in-Chief

7 tola Mangalsutra Stolen at Carter Promenade

On 28th November 2014, around 8.15 pm on Friday night at Carter Promenade – what was supposed to be a long-awaited friend’s wedding reception, turned out to be a life threatening experience for the Phonde family, who reside at Jain Mandir Road. Bandra, besides being the most happening suburb; it is in the city news for all the wrong reasons. Chain snatching, day-light robbery, drug peddling, kidnapping, vehicle / house thefts, molestations, etc. are now more common – with our concerned authorities not taking effective steps to curb crime. Are they really concerned about the common citizen’s safety? In an exclusive interview with Bandra Buzz, a firsthand report was conveyed to our reporter by Suhash Phonde. On that fateful night, Mrs. Manish Phonde (Mahila Shakha Pramukh – 97 Ward) and her daughter Divika were on the bike along with Mr. Subhash Phonde (Sena Karya Karta). On their way to attend a friend’s wedding in Danda the family were followed by two young boys while they were riding

through Carter Promenade. When suddenly one of the boy tried to snatch Mrs. Manisha's 7 tola mangalsutra and other jewellery. She retaliated by grabbing his hand, to which the assailant pushed her away resulting in both bikes losing their balance in which Mrs. Manisha’s hand got a severe burn due to the silencer – and her husband fracturing his thumb and wrist. While both the bikes laid on the ground just about 100 metres from the Police Commissioner’s Bungalow one of the assailants forcibly removed the mangalsutra from her neck and fled towards the mangrove bushes of Carter Promenade whereas the other (later identified as Umar Usman Khan) tried to flee on his bike, but an alert and brave Subhash along with the help of some people caught hold of Usman and handed him over to police custody. Meanwhile, the injured and robbed victims Mr. & Mrs. Phonde were rushed to Bhabha Hospital for treatment and an FIR (# 0538426) was registered at the Khar Police Station. Usman was arrested and his

bike was detained. Mrs. Manisha informed us that the cops had assured her of getting her mangalsutra back and were confident of nabbing the other assailant soon. Imagine, if a Mahila Shakha Pramukh had to undergo such trauma, what about the general public? She could have lost her life! We need strictly enforced preventive actions to ensure women safety. The dynamic Bandra Sena Vibhag Pra-

mukh, Mr. Sudesh Dube, Mr. Sandeep Metkar (Shakha Pramukh - Ward # 97) and Mr. Pramod Mahadik (Shakha Pramukh Ward # 96) have strongly condemned this incident and appealed to Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria & Bandra DCP to take strongest possible action against these culprits – to discourage such daring robberies. STUDENTS INITIATE FOR A Aunty Anita CAN Dance - Saala GREATER GOOD Life is mostly froth and bubbles, Only two things stand like stone, Kindness in others’troubles Courage in our own. These immortal words of Mother Theresa hold far more relevance today, than they ever did. They also epitomise the essence of Social Responsibility. The prime human need to be able to provide a helping hand to thesociety. Social Responsibility Forum is such an attempt of NMIMS’ Anil Surendra Modi School of Commerce. It has endeavoured to create a positive impact for awakening people towards societal needs. They recently conducted Cleanliness Drive at the Juhu Beach in collaboration with the NGO YUVA. A signiďŹ cant number of students went and cleaned the beach, and in doing so, attempted to spread awareness regarding individual responsibility to keep the surroundings clean, also keeping up with hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi’s dream of a clean and beautiful India. Currently, SRF is conducting its event Ummeed, which is a curriculum based teaching program. The SRF members and volunteers are teaching underprivileged children in various locations through numerous NGOs. These children lack the basic founda-

tional knowledge and this causes a dysfunctional background for further education. The sole aim of these NGOs and SRF is to bridge this gap. Muskaan is an event where every year on Valentines’ Day that is 14th of February, the members of SRF visit Tata Memorial Centre and meet young souls suffering from the deadly disease, cancer. This is an effort to spread a little cheer, a little happiness in their bleak lives and also to enliven optimism in them that all they need to do is to ďŹ ght the disease strongly and then all will be well. Coming up next is their agship event,AARAMBH which is a 5 km marathon on Bandra,Bandstand starting and culminating at Taj Lands’ End. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Smile Foundation. Smile Foundation is an NGO that aims at improving the lives of children and their families living in slums and backward regions throughout the country. So, come for Aarambh along with your friends and family and run for a social cause at the beautiful Bandstand. This is your chance to contribute to someone’s better future. To register for Aarambh, call us on the 9820919701, following numbers 9819980148 or 8451844429.

Just a few months back, Aunty Anita from Andheri visited her favourite nephew Vivek from Bandra, who just turned 21. At the grand birthday party, she would NOT dance, as her shoulders and knees were aching badly. Vivek called her to his room and gave her an imported juice bottle, along with two tubes to take home. He told her that the very next day he would call her up and explain how to use these – and that it would surely help her, if she followed his instructions. After all, she had severe arthritis for more than three years – and the pain was getting worse. Trusting Vivek, Aunty Anita trudged back to her home in Andheri. Next morning, Aunty Anita got a call from Vivek; who explained to her in detail how her joint condition would gradually improve with some natural supplements and topical applications. She religiously did as Vivek told to her for about three weeks. Then, when she felt some improvement; she immediately called Vivek to tell him the ‘good news’. Vivek assured her that the pain would soon go – and she needed to continue what she was doing, adding that some walking exercise at the local park, just around the corner, would help. Aunty Anita was motivated to do as her nephew told her, because her joint pain had reduced to almost zero. She was now reminiscing about her playful youth – and how she loved dancing at weddings, parties and other special occasions. Yesterday, Vivek saw her dancing at the

Bandra Gymkhana, with his cousin Christopher. And, they were ‘jiving’ to the tune of ‘Walk of Life’ ! She met Vivek and asked him to send some more of the stuff that helped her joints get back to normal. Later, she met her longlost friends - and could not stop telling them about her new experience – that eased her joint pain. After all, she was pain-free. They were thrilled to hear her testimony – and invited her to their Christmas, New Year and Republic Day Dance Parties. Those who saw her dance, whispered, “Aunty Anita CAN Dance – Saala ! Now, Aunty Anita needs to decide ‘where to go and enjoy a good dance’ – and she loves the joy of living. If you are experiencing joint pain or just want to avoid arthritis, kindly visit: www.forevermerck.com (or Call / SMS 9820783616) for more info how you can be free from joint pains, just like Aunty Anita.

Also, I truly believe that it’s the local people who make the place interesting. Asians are generally warm and friendly making the stay more enjoyable. Indians usually stick to Indian food when they are travelling and miss out on amazing food that each country offers. Asian food is probably one of the best cuisines in the world and if you are a foodie, there is no other part of the world which offers such great food at great prices. And last, but most importantly, Indians love to shop and it doesn’t get better than Asian countries for shopping. From Electronics, Apparels, Home Décor, Handicrafts, Gift Items, they has everything you want at affordable prices. What are the future goals for Travel Guru Asia? We plan on covering most of the interesting destinations across Asia. In 2015, we will be launching tours to Russia, Mongolia, Japan, South Korea and North Korea.

Next summer, we will also launch the amazing train tour ‘Trans Mongolian Express’ which starts in Beijing, China and travels via Ulaan Bataar, Mongolia and cities in Russia. The highlights of this tour include places like

Rain does not dampen the Stanislaus Spirit

The unseasonal heavy downpour that descended on Mumbai in the early hours of December 13 caught every one by surprise. However, most perturbed was the Sports Director of St. Stanislaus High School, Bandra, Hycinth Cardoz, for the Annual Sports Day was slated for that afternoon. He called up the Principal of the school, Fr Jude Fernandes, requesting the Sports Meet to be postponed to the following Saturday as the carefully prepared ground now resembled a water-logged bog. Fr. Jude, optimistically told him to wait a couple of hours. At 8 o’clock the school ground staff arrived and started work on a war footing, sponging off the excess water, covering the damp patches with sand, re-marking the

tracks and finally laying down the red carpet all ready for the arrival of the guests. So it was that at 1:30 p.m. the 151st Annual Athletic Meet of St. Stanislaus High School took off without any dampening of the Stanislaus Spirit. The chief guests were the parents of Shawn D’Souza, the Sports Captain of the School and the guests of honour, were the parents of the Assistant Sports Captain, Sharan Murali. The other distinguished guests were senior Inspector Bandra Police, Ramchandra Dhavale and Sr. Blanche, principal of St. Joseph’s High School, Mr. Vikram Singh, Vice-President of the St. Stanislaus ExStudent’s Association. The guests were greeted by a guard of honour comprising of the Scouts Squad of the school, trained by Mr

Elias Corriea, Assistant District Scout Commissioner. The highlight of the day was the March Past, with the four Houses, Britto, Loyola, Xavier, Kostka named after Jesuit saints, competing for the coveted March Past Trophy. The march past was judged by special judges from the Army and Air force wings. The days of rigorous marching practice, under the guidance of the Sports Master, Rostan D’Silva and all the House teachers, paid off as the boys put up a splendid display, to the beat of the St. Stanislaus School Band. Besides the athletic events, the special feature of this years Athletic Meet was an exhibition Kabaddi Match. Among the numerous sports that Stanislites participate in Kabaddi

will be a new feature. Many ex-Stanislites turned up for the exstudent’s race and it was heartening to see a Stanislite from the class of ’69 also competing and completing the 200 metre race. The School motto, so proudly quoted by every student past and present - “Born for Greater Things” was clearly visible, in action, all through the meet. Finally, as the school flag was lowered and the Chief Guest declared the 151st Athletic Meet closed, both athletes and spectators dispersed with a sense of achievement and the words of the school anthem echoing in their hearts...’With grateful hearts we sing your praise, Dear School our joy and pride.... I WENT TO SEE MY DARLIN’… recalling memories In the era before television, the hours after sunset in Bandra, were broken only occasionally, by the call of a wandering salesman or the odd wail of a beggar. On some nights, however, a burst of song would fill the neighbourhood. A woman in a dress would belt out a tune that began, "I went to see my darling, last Saturday night." Most people didn't know that this tune was actually called "I Ain't Nobody's Darling" - and had been composed in 1921, by an American named Robert King. They had even less idea, that the same song was frequently heard in Christian neighbourhoods all across the city; or that it would still be sung 40 years later. Over the years, this mysterious woman has become the stuff of urban mythology. Thousands of senior citizens, who know nothing about her, have heard her distinctive singing - the melody clear and true; even though most of the words, apart from the first line of the refrain - were gibberish. Bandra residents who are 50+ today, recall a woman wandering through Christian localities of Bandra & Byculla in the 1960s, cupping her hands for the bullhorn effect; turning her face towards the sky and singing in a loud and raspy voice. Oldies remember her, wearing the same tattered white dress, standing outside the building gates on Prof. Almeida Road, St. Cyril Road, St. Andrews Road, D’Monte Park Road, St. Paul Road and surrounding areas - every week; singing a tuneless song in disjointed English in the mid-'80s. More recently, there are reports that the woman who sang "I Went to See My Darling" has been replaced by a man with a harmonium. Where did he learn his signature tune? Where did he learn to play the harmonium? Where does he come from? Where does he go? And for how many years more will we see him? These are million dollar questions. Stories about this beggar woman (many called her Lollipop or Cotton Mary), are as hazy as her listeners' memories of her. She spoke a curious combination of English and Hindi, that bordered on the incomprehensible. She was unclear about where exactly she lived, indicating only that she lived on the seashores of Bandra. She didn't even seem to be sure of her name. Sometimes, she'd said that her name was Carol Anthony – and at other times Lollipop. Lollipop said her mother was “Anglo-Indian” and that her father was a "Madrasi". She insisted she was Cotton Mary's child and that her mother would wear skirts and dresses - sometimes even lipstick – before heading out to sing, with her in tow. Lollipop looks like any other homeless person, until she breaks into song. When

she does, her strong voice filling the street; there's no mistaking her for anyone else. Some of these tunes have been familiar on Mumbai's streets for at least five decades. The woman who many knew as Cotton Mary would appear around Christmas and Easter in Bandra, Parel, Byculla and other Christian neighbourhoods, singing ditties that were popular with the city's Englishspeaking Christian and Anglo-Indian communities. Songs like ‘Irene Goodnight’, ‘You Are My Sunshine’, ‘Daisy, Daisy’ and ‘Its a Long Way to Tipperary’ are thought to have originally come to Mumbai with homesick Allied soldiers, stationed here during the Second World War. While many of them continue to be sung at singsong sessions of Christian parties, almost no Mumbaikars have heard any other version of "I Went to See My Darling", except for the ones by Cotton Mary and Carol Lollipop. Patricia Nath, who grew up in Bandra in the early 1960s, remembers her entire family joining Cotton Mary in sing-a-longs. "My father played the harmonica - my mother and my sisters, we'd all join in," she said. Nath says that "the original Cotton Mary" performed tunes with perfectly correct lyrics. "She told my mother and older sister that she had learnt them while working as a domestic help with an English family," said Nath. When the family left India, Mary was abandoned by her husband and forced to take up singing for her supper, literally. "In Bandra, I know many people would invite her to come up and have a meal, depending upon what time of day it was," said Nath. "So she would begin at about 10 in the morning and start going from street to street, taking whatever she got - whether it was food, clothes or money."

Carol Lollipop sang songs taught to her by her mother, Mary. But it seems likely that by the late 1960s and '70s, other street performers were also singing these tunes. They looked similar - the women wore dresses; the men carried harmoniums; both genders were accompanied by young children - and sang the same songs. The difference lay in the lyrics. The duplicates sang gibberish. The ‘Cotton Mary’ seen in Thane, singing nonsensical lyrics was clearly different

from the English-speaking woman heard in Bandra, Byculla and Mazagon. Nath said that the original Cotton Mary disappeared in the late 1960s. But after a few years, the familiar tunes wafted in one day and the Naths saw Cotton Mary outside their window, dressed as before - in a skirt, blouse and hat. They called her up and when she was at their doorstep, they realised it was a man in women's clothes. "He said his name was Anthony," recalled Nath. "She apparently said she had earned lots of money singing, so when she didn't show up for a couple of years, it seems this boy decided to try his hand. Why he did so in ‘drag’ remains unexplained. But it does offer a connection to the sari-clad Lollipop, whose body language is distinctly masculine”. While Lollipop's recollections are a cocktail of memory and delusions, she was the inheritor of a street singing tradition that's fast disappearing in the roar of our city traffic. Who can forget her lingering lyrics? How she picked up two pieces of broken tiles, fashioned them into cymbals and began to sing "I Went to See My Darling", finally fading away on a cold wintery night. The Best Help You Could Ever Give If there is one section of the living in Mumbai which gets the least attention and deserves the most, it is the silent, suffering birds and animals of our city. When we sweat in the heat, can you imagine their plight? Mumbai has very few ponds and fountains for them to quench their thirst. Our municipality must be having the worst record in the world when it comes to providing basic facilities for these creatures of God. We may not all be able to devote full-time attention to the cause of these birds and animals, but the least we can do is support those who have volunteered to give all their time and energies for this noble cause. Are you aware that there is only ONE government animal hospital in this megapolis we call Mumbai, that too started with funds donated by a Parsi lady? Are you aware that it is currently bursting at the seams and can do no more when there is so much still let to do? In this context, there are private organisations set up and efficiently run by animal lovers. But while they put in their full time, effort, dedication, expertise and love, one thing they fall short of is funds. One such worthwhile cause to donate not only money and material but also your time, is Animals Matter To Me (AMTM); a Charitable Animal Welfare Trust, established in Mumbai in 2010, which works towards the cause of animal welfare and towards offering and providing high quality medical care to all species of animals that are unfortunate enough to live on the streets of Mumbai. What exactly is it that this organisation does? They conduct vaccination drives, awareness programs, adoptions drives, sterilization programs and feeding programs for animals and birds across the city. AMTM also has a rehabilitation facility in Marve, Mumbai (you are most welcome to visit them anytime), where animals that are injured or abandoned receive medical care, food and shelter to help get them back on their feet. Their rehabilitation facility currently houses over 50 animals including cats, dogs, de-beaked birds and many other species. They also run a 'hospital on wheels', that is used largely to transport rescues and to give prompt medical treatment to injured animals under the supervision of their in-house vet. (It's the coolest and funkiest ambulance on the streets of Mumbai.)

Registered Office Address: AMTM INDIA B-601 Blue Meadows, Shyam Nagar, Near Icchaa Poorthi Ganapati Temple, Jogeshwari East, Mumbai 400060. AMTM Rehab Address: AMTM Rehab Center, Bungalow no. 14, Chikkuwadi Road, opp. Tulsi bungalow, near Tab cab godown, lane opp. Jarimari Temple Lane, close to Malvani St. Anthony School & Church, Marve Malad (West), Mumbai 400095 Tel 022 28895572

What do they need from YOU? As you probably know, running a charity requires a lot of funds to keep the good work going. They have received a lot of support from their patrons over the years, who include individuals as well as corporate houses. The support they have received in the last four years has helped them reach where they are today and they request your support to keep the momentum going. They have now made it more convenient for donors to contribute to this noble cause with the recent addition of their online gateway. You can visit the link below to make your contribution. You could also make your special days more meaningful by spending the day with them. We all have special days in our lives, which we like to spend in a unique way. They have a suggestion. How about making your day more memorable by spending it with our furry friends??? Use it as a great occasion to raise awareness about stray welfare issues. Spend quality time with various species admitted. They offer play time with the animals, a tour of the center with a fun and informative presentation and much more! You can also sponsor your favorite specie, be it an animal, bird or a reptile. You can click great pictures and can invite your family and friends to join in too.

1) Adoptions of strays and abandoned species and give them a loving home. You will receive selfless love in return - Guaranteed. 2) Volunteering at the rehab facility for cleaning, upkeep and helping admitted species at rehab. They always need helping hands. 3) Fundraising for rehab and their other various activities. 4) CSR projects with various corporate houses and companies willing to help the cause. 5) Spay, neuter and release programs, feeding programs, school and college awareness programs, conduct rehab guided tours. 6) You can donate old newspapers, old clothes, old furniture, any old stuff you want to get rid off, they will use them and turn your old stuff into usable items for fundraising and usage in rehab facility. 7) Spread a word and make the lives of speechless souls beautiful.
