Chemist charged customer almost double the MRP On 15th August morning, Oliver Burrows went to Metro Medical, off Waterfield road to purchase some medicines, prescribed by his doctor. Little did he know what was in store for him, that could be just the tip of an iceberg. The MRP of the medical product is Rs 240, whereas he was charged Rs 460 as per their shop label sticker. The shop concerned is Metro Medical, 9A / 9C, Rizvi Mahal, which is opposite Bhabha Hospital, just off Waterfield Road, Bandra West. "I’m sure this medical store must be cheating many people – and I was one of their victims on Independence Day 2014, at around 9am. " When he went home with the medicines, he checked the MRP and compared the price charged as per the shop sticker, he felt cheated. He went back to Metro Medical and showed him the difference in

prices (almost double). The chemist arrogantly told him “Do what you want”. The medicine concerned was ‘Seroflo Rotacaps 250 inhaler’ – a Cipla product. The shop sticker had a bar code – and looked very genuine (to fool the unwary customer) with the price marked as Rs 460/When, Oliver confronted him, he offered a refund. I refused, telling him that this modus operandi must have been used on multiple customers – especially those who are not educated. Poor people are being fleeced of their hard earned money, by unscrupulous medical store owners. They unknowingly pay what is on the bill. I am sure that with this loot money, he has bought a second shop in the same building. >> CONTD. ON PAGE 5

They could turn out to be champs, if you champion their cause Angel Xpress Foundation is a Mumbai-based (registered, 12 A and 80G certified) ngo working towards the betterment of underprivileged children from slums. AXF believes every child deserves an opportunity to find her/his true potential; which can be attained by mentoring from well-educated and fortunate adults from their own vicinity. AXF is currently armed with 100+ volunteers who teach almost 700 children in 5 centers operated out of public parks and promenades in Bandra-W, Santacruz-W, JVPD Scheme, Lokhandwala and Andheri-E. Additionally, nearly 2000 students in BMC schools benefit from AXF’s In-School English Program. While most of the AXF volunteers are stay-at-home mothers and active senior citizens, there are a large number of youth from schools and colleges, who are also getting involved. A good number of donors approach AXF centers to reach out their generosity towards deprived children of our city with money, goodies and pampering. How did it all start? While on a sabbatical from her corporate job, Anubha Sharma decided to volunteer at a street school. She posted a Facebook request for clothes and stationery to which she received a shocking 3000+ responses within a week from willing contributors. She realised that fortunate folk have the desire to give, provided they find a legit platform for the same. Anubha joined hands with Beenaa Advani, (one of the first respondents) to contribute to the cause and thus, AXF was born. “Our main focus is on the giver. We want to create efficiency in society by utilising the otherwise redundant resources and desire to give”, says Anubha. What can you do with AXF/Can you also set up an AXF center? A volunteer at AXF, Manish Shah said, “A lot of our professional lives are spent trying to solve problems that are pale in comparison to what's been undertaken here. It's a privilege to be a part of this initiative.” All you need is • A park/promenade with a shade: located close to a slum as well as an affluent neighbourhood. • Volunteers: Just 12 to 15 adults who can spare 2 to 3 hours / week to teach English, Math, Values, Art, Craft, etc. • Donors: for snack duty, collection of reusable goods (in good condition) sponsoring a child, sponsoring excursions, and celebrating special occasions (with treats). • Or sign up with an existing AXF center if one exists close to your neighbourhood. • Call Anubha/Beenaa at 9930070086 / 9820244562 or mail info@angelxpress.org

THE AXF INFLUENCE AXF often receives children growing up in harsh conditions. The show of affection, care and nurturing along with some laughs and jokes that float around in the midst of all that learning, is almost therapeutic for them. • Kajal, a once aggressive child, witnesses constant domestic violence. With constant grooming, interactions, counselling & mentoring by “Shivani Teacher”, the class bully has now transformed into a center leader who can single-handedly maintain decorum in 70 children. • In a little over a year, girls in “Sonali Teacher’s” class at Santacruz are expressing a desire to become well-educated professionals, rather than marrying at an early age; with bearing and raising children the only purpose of life. • Children at the Santacruz center dote on their “Pramod Sir”, the once-shy Kiran constantly scared from the beatings at home, looks forward to a few laughs in the class.

Let us all be "Fair" All festivals are man made, to celebrate an aspect of a particular Religion or Community. Being a Secular Nation we must all learn to respect each other. Over the years we have lost out on the very essence of all our religious festivals and feasts. The major reason for this, is the involvement of a very sinister nexus of political & commercial groups in these festivals. May it be Bandra Fair, Ganesh Utsav, Eid, Navratri, Diwali etc. To a great extent they have all lost it's good old charm. Today it's all a ground for commercial exploitation, which is backed by political propaganda. Why do we get to see the city flooded with political posters during all our religious festivals? Most of these posters are with the faces of politicians who have no genuine connect with the occasions whatsoever. Why are all sorts of rules broken in the name of holy festivals? This is openly done so with the unholy blessings of politicians? There is only one answer to this my friends. "Vote Bank Politics"..... We as Bandraites would love to visit Bandra Fair & see posters with the history of our Mount Mary Church & revert to the past glory of the fair, minus the commercial & civic chaos. We would all like to partake in Ganesh Utsav & Navra-

tri where we see posters depicting the teachings from the Holy Gita, minus the loud music and traffic jams. We would love to participate in the festivities of Ramzan & Eid where there are posters with messages of peace from the Holy Quran, minus the loud speakers & road blocks. We would love to celebrate Diwali where messages of prosperity & joy are spread, minus the noise & air pollution from crackers. Let us not fall for this trap of Communal friction. That is exactly the root of this very cheap Vote Bank Politics. This is practiced all across India & by all political parties. We as ALM members should rise above all of this & respect & honour each other. It's time we all learn to take pride & call ourselves Indians first and hold the rule of law above all, only then shall we gain respect for our individual Religions & Communities. There is a solution to each and every issue & the answers lie within us in finding a balance. Let us all find that balance and in doing so we can avoid falling into this devious trap of Communal divide. So lets all get back to resolving the issues plaguing our Society, rather than argue and fight amongst ourselves. Zameer Palamkote

04 AUGUST 2014 SEE THE WRITING ON THE WALL Dear Reader, The Festive season starts… now! With Parsi New Year, Ganesh Chaturthi and many more festive days in the coming months; we are at the threshold of creating community connect in our cosmopolitan suburb – we call Bandra. This festive fervour is what makes Bandra a ‘Mini India’. And, this is what national integration is all about. And, this is what national integration is all about. People from different regions, living peacefully in harmony. But things are not all that rosy here. Bandra’s underbelly is frightful. Illegal structures, sprawling slums, vested interests & hidden agendas are part of the scenario. However, with a high level of activism that rivals most other suburbs; Bandraites always stand up for their rights – and see that justice prevails. Even as local politicians play the ‘divide-and-rule’ game - to break up rival groups; people are much more smarter today, to see through their devilish plans. Bandra Buzz will always be your source of un-biased local news, as we do not (and will not) have any affiliation to any political parties or ideologies. All are welcome to highlight their achievements, events and views. In this way, our dear readers will have a clear picture when deciding to vote at the Assembly Elections, due in a couple of months. This time, make an informed decision. And, why not ? Your elected representative (read… next MLA) should be responsive to your needs – so, see the writing on the wall. As the Bandra Fair issues evolve to a crescendo in mid-September, let us remember – that tweaks to resolve recent problems (security, fire hazard, crowd control, etc.) can give a new lease of life to the social festivities & a devotion that are over 300 years old – and unique to Bandra. Pilgrims come from distant places – and need refreshments and rest. This is primarily the job of the BMC & the Police – who need to co-operate with the collective wisdom of locals. People who support interference by vested interest groups should be boycotted – and made to pay for their misdeeds.

This newspaper declines announcements, poetry and thank-you letters. BJP BETRAYING OUR TRUST The Modi government before it came to power made loud noises about austerity. When they took charge in Delhi, they have betrayed 1.2 billion people of our country, by changing their track & asking for privileges for their members of parliament (MP) at airports and in private airlines - that includes seats of choice, free parking tickets, reserved lounge facilities and on the spot ticket confirmation. While the common man struggles by standing in long queues and paying exorbitant parking fees, these shameless politicians have a free run. They consider the 1.2 billion people of the country their servants, rather than they being the servant of the people. I strongly feel that in the name of special privileges, our MP's under the Modi government are looting the public and tax payer’s money, for their selfish personal gain. They are so shameful, that they do not care or bother for the common people. In the UK & US, their Prime Minister travels in the local train & President stands in a queue and has strong link with common people. It is high time the monopoly of the 800 MP's and their privileges must stop, which is nothing but betrayal of faith of the people, after the general elections. The urgent need of the hour is that the Modi government must stop this selfish poltical stunt & give maximum privilege to the people, rather than talking about “good days” which has proved that it is ‘good days’ for our MP's - & not the common people of the country. Bhagwan Thadani Hon’ble PM Modi ji, are you not concerned when the cost of tomatoes is Rs 80 per kilo… and rising higher? People have already started to clamour: “Hamare Purane Din Le Aao” Ronnie Williams GOVINDA PYRAMIDS With serious injuries and death due to falling from the Govinda pyramids every year, I welcome the order of the Bombay High Court to ban the participation of the boys & girls under 18 years of age in dahi handi celebrations,

which has become political and commercial. It has been observed that the Govinda in the city have become day by day more commercial, with all groups wanting to make money, by risking the lives of the small children on the top, while breaking the handi in the name of Indian culture - and taking advantage of the situation to the maximum extent. With this directive, the Bombay High Court have saved the lives of thousands of small innocent children, who are not fit for such type of dangerous sports, played by the selfish people for their selfish personal and political gain. Lalu Kewalramani BANDRA FAIR Year after year, the Bandra Fair is under attack. Yet again, this year Lillian Pais is sowing the seeds of discontent. We stand by Mount Mary Church & the Bandra Fair with all our might. Let not people having vested interest, try to stop the 300 year old traditional Bandra Fair. Leslie Almeida Some traditions are fun to continue, even if it's lost its essence. Today, the Bandra Fair is no longer what it was when we were kids - it's gone commercial. Yet I would advocate its continuance. Raymond Fernandes I support the "Bandra Fair" festivities. Austin Norris All that I want is that the mela (Bandra Fair) should go on. However, it should be either re-located to a spot where people are not inconvenienced. We want a quieter and cleaner place to stay during the Fair. Daryll D’Souza Last year, BIPA along with the other organisations protested and got the gate for Mount Mary opened from the Cement Road, touching Shah Rukh’s place. The actor does not have a problem with people using the road, but the politicians are trying their tricks, so that we go and beg in front of them. Corrupt police and the BMC too crosses the line, way too often. We know that if they are not with us they are against us. Now, the BJP is brought to power here. So, it is time to put them to the test. The coming MLA elections are near – and we know what to do. Luke Mendes

ltina Securities has been playing a major role in the field of Investor Education and Awareness Programme for the last 30 odd years, through investment seminars, as well as workshops. Mr. Clifton DeSilva is the Director at Altina Securities Pvt. Ltd., a company engaged in the activities of stock broking as a member of the National Stock Exchange, Wealth Management & Equity Research. The company has conducted as well as participated in several investment seminars & workshops both at the national and international levels. The other mode is the print media through which article views on investments are addressed in leading investment publications. To get an insight, into what this is all about; we interviewed Mr. Clifton DeSilva – and he had forthright answers to all our questions. In your Investor Education and Awareness programs, why do you have special emphasis on equities? In the Investor Education and Awareness programmes conducted by us, we focus on all asset classes - but the special emphasis is on equities, because as an asset class, it outperforms over a longer period of time. The equity cult in India is still at a nascent stage & requires development. Therefore, our endeavor is to develop the equity cult; where (if investments are made on well re-

Can you substantiate your statements? There are a host of instances to prove that equities as an asset class outperforms all other asset in the long run. The stock of ‘Wipro’ is a classic example - an investment of Rs 10,000 in the year 1980 in the stock of Wipro is today valued at approx. Rs. 540 crores, without taking into consideration dividend payouts. If the dividend payouts are considered the returns scale higher. Also, an investment of Rs 25,000 in the year 1978, in the stock of Colgate Palmolive in 1978 is worth Rs 3 crores today. In fact, the annual dividend received on the investments of Rs 25,000 is Rs 7.88 lakhs, which is tax free. These are just two examples, but there are several other stocks; that have provided huge returns to stakeholders. What are the comparable returns in other asset classes? An investment of Rs 11,500 in silver, in the year 2004 is valued at Rs 40,000 today - an increase of 3.5 times, over a period of 10 years. An investment of Rs 5,850 in gold, in the year 2004 is valued at Rs 27,000 today - an increase of 4.5 times over a period of 10 years. An investment of Rs 100 in 1980 in the BSE Sensex is valued at over Rs 26,000 today, an increase of 25 times. How are these investor education and awareness programs conducted? As stated earlier, over the last 30 years we have been very active in conducting investor education and awareness programs. These programs are in the form of workshops, seminars, articles and interviews in leading investment publications; as well as industrial tours to different parts of the country, to visit the facilities of successful companies. To our credit, we have organized over 1000 investment seminars/workshops. We have also participated in seminars on investments abroad. All these investment education and awareness programs have been conducted as part of corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs – and are conducted free of cost to the participants.

Capital Finance International London nominated us for the Best Investor Education Program in India - 2013. What has been the response to these programs? All the initiatives on investor education and awareness program by us have received overwhelming response and our efforts have been recognized, through several awards received by us. Recently, Capital Finance International London nominated us for the best investor education program in India - 2013. What are your future plans? We will continue to conduct investor awareness education programs on a regular basis, with special emphasis on equities - as we strongly believe that the surest way of creating enormous wealth is by investing in great companies with high potential. There is a myth amongst many investors, that equities are high risk investments. It should be noted that when you invest in equities you are buying part of an actual business. The stock is representative of a real enterprise. It is not about playing the market, but about buying businesses. The right business which will prosper over a period of time but by the same token selection of the wrong business could prove a disaster. Invest in the business and not in the price. HDFC Bank started with 1 branch and if an investor invested in the stock at that time he would be a part owner of one branch. Today HDFC Bank is over 1500 branches to the investor is now the part owner of a bank of over 1500 branches without investing any further amounts. Similarly, Maruti started with 1 lakh vehicles. Today, it has a capacity of over 15 lakh vehicles. Investments in growing companies can create enormous wealth.” Recently, Capital Finance International has recognized the efforts of the company in the field of Investor Education and Awareness Programmes - and has nominated Altina Securities for the Best Investor Education Programme in India – 2013. EAT OUT

THE NEW HEALTHY QSR KITCHEN EXPRESS Another food joint opens in Bandra. But this is a food joint with a difference. The Central Kitchen is a well-developed concept in the Sion-Dadar-BKC belt, and has now honored Bandraites with its presence. The Kitchen Express delivers traditional Moghlai and Awadhi cuisine, Thai curries, Lebanese delicacies, Continental cuisine, and sweets for the sweet. Owned by the young and dynamic Tejinder Singh, the outlet caters to the taste-conscious as well as the health-conscious. I tried their baked pav-wada served with tangy and spicy chutney. At just Rs.15, it's a jumbo sized pav-wada, the best part

being it is totally oil-free & yet as tasty as any pav-wada you may ever have tried. Tejinder assures that even gulping down three or four of these jumbos leave you feeling light & having space left for more. The menu also includes other baked food items, but the nothing beats vada-pav. Another specialty on the menu is veg & chicken square cuts, resembling a stuffed paratha, Very tasty, very filling. The Central kitchen is also known for its freshly prepared wraps & rolls, both veg & non-veg. The uniqueness of the wraps and rolls lies in the fact that they are freshly made, authentic Indian style, but

served with a fusion of international sauces. Another item on the menu worth ordering is the Dum Biryanis, which I personally would rate higher than the ones from Hyderabad. Roomali rotis are also available, something which I find often missing on the menus of many other Moghlai restaurants, so that's another plus point. The outlet has also tied-up with Croissants & Croissants pastries would make a sweet ending after savoring the spicy delicacies. Steaming cups of Lavazza coffee are also freshly prepared at about half the

price as compared to similar coffee available elsewhere. There are many other items on the menu (available on Zomato), which will be delivered at your door-step (minimum order Rs. 250), by calling the outlet on 26487688. Orders would be delivered within the western suburbs of Bandra, Khar and Santa Cruz. The outlet is conveniently located near Rizvi College and is open from 10 am to 10 pm. I would recommend you order early to reserve your favorites as sometimes the inventory tends to get sold out early. Cyrus Gonda

“New Business Opportunities await in Georgia” says Bandra boy Satinder Singh, Hon. Consul General dra for over 50 years, so I am more of a Bandra boy. I started my business with my elder brother in 1964. Today, with a lot of hard work and self made initiatives, I have reached the level of being one of the most eminent businessmen in Mumbai. In our community (Sikh), we have very few people who are in ship repair business – and we are one of them. Most of them are in the automobile industry. Today we have been very successful in promoting our business, with the goodwill of our clients in Maharashtra and all over India.

Satinder Pal Singh is a distinguished businessman in the shipping industry, who has recently been appointed to represent the Republic of Georgia, East Europe in Maharashtra. Bandra Buzz interviewed Satinder to let locals know about new business opportunities, for those who are willing to work at new destinations and horizons. Could you tell us something about yourself? I had come to Bombay in 1956, as a small 10 year old child. I have been living in Ban-

What is your role as the newly appointed Honorary Consul of Georgia in Mumbai? I have been appointed by the Republic of Georgia as their Hon. Consul General in Mumbai – and more specifically Mumbai. Basically, this is to promote trade, goodwill, culture, etc. between our two countries – i.e. India and Georgia. We have lots of things that we can do from India to Georgia like promoting tourism, culture and lots of industrial entrepreneurship, which Georgia requires, as it is a very upcoming and developing Eastern European country. India has a great potential to do business with Georgia. It would be a great opportunity for young entrepreneurs to take

advantage of the present situation. I wish to promote a lot of goodwill between these two countries, especially all the good things that India can offer, like agricultural products, industrial products – and our great heritage of culture, which we would like to take to Georgia. Especially the movie business, which can help promote a lot of tourism to Georgia – wherein they will benefit. This is my main aim – and I hope to take this a long way for India and Georgia – to sign a lot of trade agreements that will help the progress of both countries. Today Georgia is the 4th non-corrupt country in the world – which is a very big achievement. They have a lot of resources, like iron ore for steel & natural agricultural products, which they can offer India. We can help set up a lot of food processing units, which can give a great impetus to Indian entrepreneurs. How is your appointment as going to help or assist local communities of Bandra-Khar-SantaCruz? Being a Bandraite, it is my foremost outlook that I promote a lot of entrepreneurs from Bandra, to have business ties with Georgia. I plan to promote this through the Rotary Club or the other available clubs, who will co-operate. We could give them all the inside outlook of what Georgia has

to offer. As I am available right here in SantaCruz, I would like to give the best opportunities to ‘my own’ – i.e. people from Bandra. It was nice to know about your intent to outreach to Bandra – but, through this interview, would you like to convey any specific message to the people of Bandra Khar SantaCruz? Staying in Bandra almost my whole life, I find that is one of the best suburbs, where we have very good people residing here. The population is cosmopolitan, who believe in good human values. In the last 30 years, the evolving infrastructure has helped to maintain the status of ‘Queen of the Suburbs’. This is a very important aspect. Most Bandraites are great entrepreneurs, as the business atmosphere is conducive. The local entrepreneurs are very prominent people, who are in business for many decades – creating a lot of goodwill. Here, various groups uplift community values. I am looking forward that Bandra should take the lead – and be a ‘model’ to the surrounding suburbs of Mumbai. Put Your Best Foot Forward After Arnav received his fifth rejection letter, he realized that something was seriously wrong. He was well qualified for the jobs, had his credentials in place too. So what was really coming in the way of him and his dream job? Discussions with close friends and a lot of introspection made him realize that there was a lapse in the way he presented himself during interviews. “In life, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Clichéd as it may sound, this is indeed, the truth. We form impressions about people, in the first few seconds of having met them. These are subconscious judgments that we form, based on their appearance, body language, grooming, etiquette and communication. Since we do not know them, we look for cues that would help us to understand them better. Once we form an opinion, we try hard to validate it, by looking for other clues that will help us reinforce our beliefs. Arnav realized that although he was well qualified, his lazy demeanor and ex-

Yet it does entail being something you are not. It is not being ‘fake’ but being ‘aware’. It involves playing up your strengths and achieving success in your personal and professional life. My bedroom is above our building car park where cars are parked. Is this bad Feng Shui? What can I do to change it? Mrs. Smita Gadgil Place a small mirror on the ceiling of your garage so that it reflects the garage floor. This symbolically places your bedroom on the ground level.

Our family life is really a cause of concern. Everyone is busy with their own lives, each one does their own things even when we are at home and we just don't seem to get together as a family anymore. Can Feng Shui help? Mr. Larry Gomes Yes, to broadly begin with, I suggest that you find the southwest sector of your living room, as this is where family relationships are located. Indeed, all indicators of your relationships are found in the SW of the home. Place a beautifully framed family portrait in the living area or alternatively hang a round faceted crystal in the SW of the living room to fill the room with rainbow colours. This will help the family. Also you may want to consider getting the personalised Feng Shui analysis for your family. Feng Shui can enhance your lives with these accurate, personalized, comprehensive, reliable and easy to understand Feng Shui reports. This can be very important for you to apply the art of Feng Shui effectively to enhance success in your life, improve your health, wealth and feel more at ease in your relationships and surroundings.

Does it really matter which side of the bed we sleep on as a couple? Mrs. Veena Gupta Yes. The woman should sleep on the right side (as you lie in bed), and the man should sleep on the left. You should also try to orient the bed or sleep with your head pointing in one of your four favourable direction based on your KWA number; most preferable the TIEN YI or The YIN NIEN direction. Maria Hussain will answer your questions through this column. All published letters will receive a discount coupon for consultations with Maria Hussain.
