Painting it... Bollywood Ishtyle ''Art enables us to find ourselves and lose oursleves at the same time'' ....Thomas Merton If you pass through Chapel Road and wonder what a 24 / 11 feet Anarkali is doing up there on a wall in this day and age, you may want to know it's not a paper poster, but a mural that has been adoringly painted by ' Ranjit Dahiya', a self confessed Bollywood buff who with his paintings wants to bring the essence of original hindi cinema back into our lives. Ranjit is as an artist, who founded the Bollywood Art Project (BAP), a community visual art project under which he hand paints legendary Bollywood actors and the walls he tries to target are those that are located in public spaces which would catch the moving eye. Since people cannot visit star homes or studio sets that easily, at least they can participate this way and anyone can join in. ''Indian Cinema is celebrating 100 years this year and I want to be a part of it. When I came to Mumbai few years ago as a small town lad, I realised there is no place called Bollywood which many of us think there is. Like when you look

Here, only one name comes to mind – Sir Rajjab Ali Jaffrey; or ‘Rajjab Bhai’, as he is fondly called by his college collegues. For more than 25 years, he has been instrumental in keeping Urdu plays alive in this modern world - and Rizvi College in the limelight. He has several accom-

Bar at Elco Arcade?

Ten years ago, on 15th February 2003, the Developers of the Elco Market property had broken their compound wall and destroyed a mini garden (set up by BMC and maintained by Panchratna Building) so that they could have an additional access for

themselves from Prof. Almeida Road. Bandraites will recall that residents & shops at Elco Arcade (Market) always had their access only from Hill Road - and never from this side. This brazen act was fiercely opposed as it would create chaos for the residents of this small bye-lane and Almeida Road. Also, it would destroy the peace and tranquility of what is declared essentially, as a residential area. The site was visited by the then Additional Municipal Commissioner Shri. Sitaram Kunte - and instruction were issued to have the same re-built. The H/West Ward office had even issued an MRTP notice to the Developer to rebuild the wall. Now, in recent months - the developer has decided to open restaurants, food courts, resto bars and pubs in the new extension – ‘Tower’ – as seen in the image. He has started sales of more than a hundred shops, not to speak of Information Technology offices. He has already sold most of the flats in his 15 storied ‘tower’. The BMC have preferred to turn a blind eye. They continue to favour the developer - and pass on the burden of

all inconveniences, harassments and nuisances caused; to residents of Almeida Road and adjacent bye-lanes. Are Bandraites ready to have one more residential area with night and day car valets, bouncers of pubs, drunk customers, immoral activities and even eve-teasers, converging from all over Mumbai; destroying the local peace and tranquility - or what remains of it ? From the nature of small shops that have been constructed, it is clear that it will be more in the nature of down market shops, attracting hordes of bargain shoppers. The restaurants may be joints which survive on the custom enjoyed by second grade bars. The existing shopping arcade has seen many illegal compromises which after the additions and alterations has become a potential fire trap. It’s an accident waiting to happen. The safety norms for prevention of fire in high rises have been compromised - and all of this is a danger to the neighbouring buildings as well. Can Elco Arcade & neighbouring buildings be saved from this mess? Read the ‘Petition Letter’, that has

been signed by residents of approx. 25 buildings on Prof. Almeida Road and surrounding areas. More documented details can be viewed at: www.bandrabuzz.com/elco.html Please express your views on this vital issue (that’s spreading like wildfire), as this can be a milestone to change the unique ambiance of many peaceful areas of Bandra. Your support is important. Jayesh Gaikwad

April 2013

THE TIDE IS TURNING Dear Reader, April’s arrived – and besides the increasing temperature, many burning issues are already at boiling point. Our governing authorities do not seem to see the ground reality of issues that face the very people who they are supposed to represent. With the upcoming 2014 elections, this tide is turning. This time, many unexpected results will be seen in and around Bandra , just because our elected representatives & those at the helm of power - are too busy to even understand the plight of Bandra’s middle class. Can we let ‘Elco Arcade’, be one more watering hole? Can we let goons control Chimbai? Can we see our female folk molested, beaten & robbed in broad daylight? Can we allow hawkers to occupy our footpaths? Should we allow money-power to over shadow social justice? Should we pay this exponentially rising new BMC property tax to offset the hidden agendas of corrupt people in power? Bandra – the hub of activism - will surely rise to the occasion. Bandra Buzz is your perfect platform to showcase local issues. Creating awareness will collectively resolve matters and

make authorities see reason. We believe in people’s power – where the common man is your real hero. Your favourite neighbourhood newspaper is promoting locals who have made a mark in life. Any event or issue that’s news worthy will find a place in our pages. Whistle Blowers are welcome – but documented proof is required. Advertisers can use this local platform to promote their products & services to their target audience. We’re on expansion plans, that will be very reader-friendly – so hold on to your seat belts, a lot in the pipeline. Many Bandraites may have plans to go to places with a cooler climate. Mumbai has plenty of surrounding spots – beach resorts, hill stations, etc. So, get geared up, let’s go on a summer holiday… no more workin’ for a week or two – with worry-free fun & laughter; where the sun shines brightly & the sea ‘n’ sky is a cool cool blue.

Letters to the Editor CHIMBAI CHANGING We, the original Koli residents of Chimbai will not tolerate the high-handedness of some of the new residents in the past months. Our children are better educated & earning well – with many working abroad. They have seen how our sisters have been bruised & abused by their security guards, our nets burnt & now spy cameras focused on the beach & towards our houses. Collectively, we will oppose these intruders. This is Bandra’s last fishing village – an enclave that has existed peacefully for over 500 years. As per govt. laws, local Kolis have the first right to carry on their fishing activities. Those who have recently bought properties, have no right to dictate what happens outside of their property boundaries. More, over, they cannot force anyone to sell their property. This argument of “think logical – and become rich”, does not hold good here. There has been a move to fight these Bollywood ‘Bad Boys’, builders & politicians – along with their henchmen & ‘chamchas’. These recent issues have made us more united. Enough is Enough. We Kolis will act swiftly to see that social justice is achieved. Leena Dharmai ....................................................

I salute her for having the courage to stop a politician for doing wrong. She deserves to be publically honoured, since she has selflessly done voluntary work for so many years, serving the people for free! Shame, to every one who was responsible for her termination. But, this ordeal is actually a blessing in disguise for her. This is a golden opportunity for any honest politician to speak out in defense of this selfless lady. And cause of his sheer talent, he got an oppurtunity to go to 'Le Rochelle' in France to display 31 of his paintings depicting the History of Bollywood. Next came 'Salon du cinema, Paris', a four day festival where he was invited to showcase a 34/ 12 feet mural of 'Amitabh Bachahan of Sarkaar Raj'. A die hard fan of the Big B, as luck would have it, the actor arrived at the festival himself and signed it for him. Ranjit feels that the French appreciated his work both times he visited and were welcoming to his concepts. He also sees a lot of potential in Mumbai, where walls are everywhere just waiting to be painted, if only people would be open to it. His murals bring the area alive and one can go admire them at various spots in Bandra and Powai. They include Pran, Madhubala, Rajesh Khanna and a still from Dil Chahata Hain. The 'Big B from Deewar' which he says is imprinted in every young guys mind while growing up, is displayed on the road to Bandstand, just below the Mount Mary steps. He smiles and informs us that the actor sent someone over to look at it and then he tweeted about it and mentioned Ranjit in his blog. All costs are covered from his own pocket, and each one takes anywhere bet 40 to 50 grand to make.

He recalls once how a ladder almost broke and shrugs it off saying ,''Its part of the game. I chose this.'' His company 'Digital Moustache' has done apps for various clients including Apple which he is a registered developer for. He also does lots of apps for Rural India, many free of charge as he wants to help them out and make it easier for them to understand technology. Rejecting a lucrative offer recently, he adds, ''all this is not for me, I want to paint suddenly when am in a mood and a normal job would not give me the time to do so. I want to give to society in my own way. For me it's bringing Bollywood to people cause I am fascinated by it!.'' Ranjit informs us that he would like to do yesteryears dance queen Helen as his next mural. Right now he is looking forward to his solo exhibition at the 'India International centre' Delhi. And his research on Bolly continues, as he authors a book on the same. He ends our meeting, on a philosophical note, ''I don't want to be caught up in a commercial rut, I paint cause I can't get enough of Bollywood and want to contribute to it. It would be great to meet like minded people who are as passionate about it like I am, then maybe together we could do more. When you love doing what you doing, then everything is easy. In a place like Bandra, ‘Social Messages’ are conveyed through various Mediums, but a social message through Music is the first of its kind. An Aspiring Musician by the name of Agnelo Cardoz does exactly that. This singer/songwriter and guitarist is very dedicated to his music - and practices for almost 7 hours a day. He has big plans for himself - and his type of music. Working at ET Now, Agnelo decided to get serious with music 7 months ago - and ‘got a break’ when he started writing lyrics for Entertainment Now. He has successfully written a Jingle - which features on the channel. Agnelo says, he has a knack of writing lyrics from the news he watches and converts them into music and poems. Agnelo has also auditioned for ‘Indian Idol’, a few years back and plans to make his new found love in music as his career. When asked about what type of music he listens to - and what genre would he like to get into, he says, “Pop and rock is what I gen-

He has also recently written and sung a song on ‘Delhi’s Rape Victim’, bringing out a strong message - and hopes to write more such meaningful music with messages in the future. 12 Simple ways to make your child love reading Books open up a world of imagination and the onus to cultivate the habit of reading and love for books is more often than not on the parents alone. When the first one was born as always I read extensively on how to make sure she shares the same passion as us for books and now here is what I can confidently share: 1. Lead by Example: Kids ape their parents, loved ones(could be grandparents too) all the time. If they see you read and appreciate it they will follow suit. But what happens when you dont enjoy reading or cant manage to get your hands on to a book. Well, reading needn’t be only a book it could be the paper or a magazine too. 2. Start when they are young: Those first books that you invest in are absolutely worth every penny as they will be the first step into the world of books. Among all the rattles and toys your infant owns chunky books should be part of the collection. Don’t underestimate your infants ability to see those bright coloured large objects. They will attract and fascinate him just as much. 3. Integrate books into their lifestyle: Books and reading should be part of their routine and not something that is a recreation if you have a relaxed schedule. It could be while having their meals, at the park, at the library/book store and ofcourse a bedtime/nap time routine. If its woven into their

routine neither you or they will never skip it. Trust me when I say as kids grow older to have them addicted to reading will make putting them to bed so much easier and calming. Does that mean we always need to carry books on the go. Ideally yes but there have been times when I didnt have one and I have read fashion magazines, general interest magazines, menu cards or even business magazines. Ofcourse you try and pick an article that will interest them. But carrying a book is hardly an issue. A great tip here: If you are going to a friends for dinner or to a restaurant or somewhere where you want them to be well behaved then let them pick their books or pick their favourites. Also a weekly trip to any place that has great books like a library or a neighbourhood book store that the kid enjoys and is comfortable in should be part of the routine 4. Gift Books: No points for guessing that anything packed under that glittering wrapping paper is ‘SPECIAL’. Make books part of the special list often. When you gift them books it climbs the chart of desirability pretty quick 5. Reward & don’t penalize: Don’t make reading part of the punishment list. What I mean is never say you are punished so go read a book. Always positivise it by saying because we were a bit naughty so instead of 3 books at Bed Time we will have to cut 1 down and read only 2 today. Wait for the day when they say no please dont cut my

After SSC, New Beginnings.. 25th March,2013 hilariously sure did feel like a moment celebrated in history - where we, tenth graders experienced a feeling of eternal freedom after working our best from what we call the ‘Maharashtra State Board Examinations’. A month long examination cannot be compared to the hard work we all contributed for a year and a half. Long hour tuition classes were not just a few, but many which tired us completely. The vast syllabus of subjects seemed fearfully impossible. Initially, we complained as much as we could. ‘The tenth grade is much easier than the ninth, it’s just the vast syllabus. Trust us, you all will do well’ was what we were told by our seniors. ‘Keep faith, the tenth grade will pass sooner than you know’ our parents calmed us, but our teachers were our real heroes. They ensured we studied from the beginning, they focused on completing our syllabus marvellously, moreover they worked with us without any regret, which fostered not just the smart but all

students to prove their mettle. The ending of our ten years of school truly was emotional. Our teachers played the part of our parents, and helped reveal to us our hidden talents. Our friends too stood by us during our good & bad times. We experienced a whole new world. A world where we were nourished and moulded delicately. We were blessed with strength and courage to face life and were made to be valuable good people. That day saw us flicking dust off the collar of a suit, ironing ties and duppatas, adorning jewellery. Yes, it was the last day of our tenth grade - the farewell! There was joy, laughter, sorrow and tears. The final day of our school was a memorable, yet a treasurable one. It was not only a new beginning for us students, who were going to be entering a new phase in our lives; but a beginning for all who were with us, through all these years and aimed only for our lives to be successful. Now, the world is our oyster. Alison Dutt

Over the last few months investors have lost heavily in mid cap and small cap stocks and this is leading to a decline in participation in the stock market by retail investors. There appears to be a steep fall in the average daily turnover contributed by retail investors to daily market volumes. Statistics indicate that average retail volumes fell 33% to Rs 3885 crores in February from Rs 5818 crores in January. The sentiment in the markets were negative for most part of 2012 due to several reasons – at home the policy paralysis contributed to the negative sentiment while the problems in the euro zone were negatives from abroad. However, from September onwards, there was a shift in change in sentiment from negative to positive; based on the shift in stand by the government, which took on its allies who were opponents to reforms - and initiated a spate of reforms in a short period of time.

The retail investors who were showing signs of returning to the markets in a gradual manner appear to be shunning the markets once again and currently there is lukewarm participation in the markets from retail investors. The primary reason in the huge crash in stock prices in the mid cap and small cap segment Some of the drop in prices have been so sharp and in a short period of time that it has not only drained the wealth of the retail investor but also the sentiment. Read the full article at www.bandrabuzz.com/altina.ht ml Some of the mid cap and small cap stocks in the IT sector have been badly mauled. To cite a few examples, the stock of Zylog which was quoting around Rs 600 less than a year back slumped to around Rs 50. Similar with Gloydyne, the stock which was around Rs 450 levels crashed to Rs 13 in less than 6 months time. Altina Securities Pvt. Ltd.

DRACONIAN PROPERTY TAX POLICY The Property Tax bill was passed by the State Government and sent to the BMC which is run by the Shiv Sena/BJP for working on the mechanism for the same. It is unfortunate that as per the new system, residents have to pay as per the various weightages being charged, as per built up instead of carpet area, other basic facilities such as society office, podium, stilt and basement car parking, gymnasium, and open areas etc. I had read an article in the Hindustan Times, wherein it was reported that around 50,000 complaints and suggestions were received by the BMC with regards the Property Tax new policy which was over ruled by the Shiv Sena / BJP ruled BMC. The same elected representatives of the Shiv Sena / BJP who conveniently passed the new policy are now passing the buck and shying away from taking responsibility, that they were the ones who took the decision to pass the new property tax policy in the Coporation even without a discussion and are now very conveniently shedding crocodile tears. I have raised the issue in the Maharashtra Assembly session and have said on record that the

State Government gave a weapon to the BMC - and it has been grossly misused by the Shiv Sena/BJP led Corporation. The Hon’ble Chief Minister has assured (after the issue was raised by me in the Assembly) that a meeting of all the stake holders will be taken in the issue. If any MLC or other elected representative of the Shiv Sena / BJP says that they are fighting on the issue; they are in fact misleading and deceiving the public at large - as the residents are educated and they know as to who were responsible to make the rules and regulations. They know how the policy was passed in the Corporation without even hearing any of the more than 50,000 complaints and suggestions received for the same. It just further highlights the double standards of the Shiv Sena / BJP regime in the Corporation. My stand is very clear - I oppose the new Property Tax policy and have to that effect written to the Hon’ble Chief Minister 6 months back. I have also raised the issue in the recent Assembly session against the passing of the new property tax policy by the Shiv Sena / BJP led Corporation. Baba Siddique MLA

Diary of a ‘pakka Bandra chick’ Yes, I’m a Bandra chick. I know the term is horribly clichéd. But happily, it’s also true. I was born & brought up here. I went to school & college here. I received baptism, my first Holy Communion, confirmation & matrimony here. And perhaps, perhaps I’ll also receive my final anointing here. And while I can never have enough of world travel, there’s something deeply peaceful about coming home, to good old Bandra. Even though Bandra has changed leaps and bounds in the last decade, so much of it remains as it was. As hopefully, it always will be. Despite the name changes, the roads we know & love still go by their old names: Hill road, Linking road, Carter Road, Perry Road (Quick: do a test, do you know all the new names of these roads? An-

swer below, no peeking now!) I love that Bandra is so self-contained. That we can grab a bite (or many bites) at the endless number of restaurants here, that we can watch movies in our Bandra theaters, that we buy shoes (lots of shoes!), clothes & almost everything under the sun here, that we can study, dance, swim, gymn, lose

THE BANDRA DIARIES

Sundays are so special… in Bandra Sundays are extremely special. I look forward to them - not because it is holiday, but because Bandra is beautiful on a Sunday morning. After a hectic week, Sundays usually go by lazing around in bed. This month, I decided to wake up and soak in the Sunday sun. For over a year, I’ve crossed a community park right opposite my house; without paying much attention to it. Without much to do, I came out to buy some groceries - and thought I’d take a walk across the park. I could never imagine, that that one encounter could have such a deep impact on me.

is it Bandra that has always been inclusive of all the sections of society, or this time around was it just the sport The late afternoon chatter and over active children playing around seemed like a common scene at a park. But - when I walked in, they weren’t really kids, at least not all of them. Involved in a game of volleyball were three expats, a bunch of locals from the colony and a group of street kids. And in that one instance I realized this is how we are supposed to be. This is the communion between various people - not based on where they come from, or what they do; but just doing something they love, together. What surprised me wasn’t only the level of comfort between the various groups (evident of the fact

that this wasn’t the first time they were playing together) but more so; that the language didn’t matter, the communication wasn’t through words - but through the spirit of the game. And a question that I asked last time that; ‘is it Bandra that has always been inclusive of all the sections of society, or this time around was it just the sport’. So, the entire month I kept a look out to see another situation which would confirm if Bandra does in fact exist without discrimination. And there were plenty, people playing with street kids at ‘Carters’, others showing compassion towards stray cats and dogs; people here confirmed the belief that there are those who still do things selflessly. And… while most run against time in the fast paced Mumbai life, for a few moments Bandra seems to slow it down, for all the right reasons. There are people everywhere. Walk a little ahead… and you’ll find more; all kinds of people in Bandra - who talk a different language, follow a different culture, eat different food and dress differently. But none of this should stop you from knowing another kind, from learning a bit from their experiences - and enriching your lives. Make a start from knowing your neighbours. You will learn things about yourselves that you never thought you knew. Bharat Gupta

probably the Queen’s Hindi too). That we are (for the most part of it) a future looking group, willing to be educated and stand up for our rights. Willing to start something for our kids kids (many of whom aren’t thought of yet) to enjoy. That culture is given so much importance – viva the zonals, celebrate Bandra & all the other Bandra fests that we have. That we still do paper drives & our radhi walas & bottle walas still come door to door. That the woman singing “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine” (albeit in a “You are my sarsine, my only sar-sine” accent) still goes around. Yeah true traffic has become ridiculous. True the slums at Reclamation make one wonder why the land was reclaimed to start with. True the digging never seems to stop.

But there’s a reason why people are far removed as Canada still celebrate Bandra. We are after a rather unique and blessed bunch to live here and call it home. Cheers to Bandra & cheers to us all! Girls will always be girls... in Bandra Caught up with my college gal pals over brunch after decades, actually a year, but it seemed like ages. Over mojitos and onion rings at 'Indigo Deli, Bandra', we reminisced our good ole days and how long we had come since then. We had travelled quite a distance metaphorically, Fashion Street was now Oxford Street, Pandora Charm bracelets had replaced Linking Road junks. After complimenting each other on just about anything and giving me grief for not owning a 'smart' phone yet, we all settled down at my fave deli and ordered everything that sounded like Food! With the topic concerning our respective career paths not lasting for more than three minutes, we flew straight into college years. Difficult professors, ex crushes, hate phone calls to rival groups and everything that came close to those wonder years, was dragged out of the closet - and we let out moans and groans vis a vis the immaturity we had displayed back then. 'Oh Ta di da!' we were so much wiser and urbane now, or were we? Firstly neither were we sitting with coins in our pockets and calculating the price of a shared pizza,

nor were we at our beloved canteen foyer or 'Croissants' in Bandra; which was the only cool hang out place back then. Secondly we were all grown up now. We no more turned up the max volume knob and made 'scenes' in public places. Finally we were all

“

What's with these prices, when did Bandra become so expi? I refuse to pay more than 50 bucks like we used to. Who chose this place?'' I managed to duck the menu thrown at me. so satisfied with our respective personal life choices - or so it seemed like, until the cocktails arrived. Congratulating myself on my choice of place, I demanded that our steward make us an extra strong ''group pitcher''. And as he bolted off looking terrified, the first truth of the day came swirling at me, ''You haven't changed at all, you still give hell to waiters''. And then the next and the next... flying like bullets across the table,

a quick burial of eloquence..... - ''If only I could have stayed single,'' was confession number one from my friend who had eloped a decade and a half back. - ''Oh if only I didn't have to go home. I would give anything up to just sit on your car bonnet till midnight at Carters - every day like we did,'' came another. - 'What's with these prices, when did Bandra become so expi? I refuse to pay more than 50 bucks like we used to. Who chose this place?'' I managed to duck the menu thrown at me. Our annual trips to the hills, six of us cramming in a 200 sq ft room, hitching lifts in anonymous cars (didn't seem dangerous back then), zooming away 'dilchahtahain' style at our own whim; we sadly realized - that we had travelled the world since then, but nothing could turn back the teen clock. A minute of nostalgic silence encircled us and then as always, one of us broke the solemness. ''All the single ladies, all the single ladies', out of pitch but with gusto we all went. After that, even a bunch of embarassed onlookers and the 'shhhhshhhh' that followed from the

neighbouring brunchers, could not stop that train. As one of the gals got up and did a quick gig, the other knocked her full glass across the table, and the remaining just applauded on choking with laughter. I looked around at my glowing girl band and it was only when I noticed a few masacaras trickling down, chilli sauce smudged on a zara top and noone bothering to wipe either off.......that it all clicked right then!!! Yes! Somewhere we were still the sweet teens who had walked into the college campus week after week, headed straight to the bunking spot, shared pineapple Energee drinks and let out ''We give a damn'' to anyone who raised so much as an eyebrow. The only difference was that this time around they were 'green apple mojitos'!

Sweaty summers can cause cancer April has arrived… and ‘Profuse Perspiration’ has hit us. Bandra’s hot summer has started. Early mornings & late evenings are best spent outdoors – and the Reclamation, Bandstand & Carter Promenades are the place to be in. Alternately, you can go to the public park in your locality or an open terrace. Winds are welcome – especially cool breeze. Bathing at least twice a day, helps soothe your senses. However, our summer days are sweaty. Mumbai’s humid air is also polluted – so the toxins we breathe is equivalent to almost 20 cigarettes per day, even for non-smokers. This lines our internal system, decreasing the nutrition absorption capacity – causing us to be easily tired. One way that our body detoxifies is through body sweat. Sometimes, we find this very embarrassing – especially at social or corporate events. An air-conditioned environment provides some relief from the intense heat. But the moment you come out, it feels even worse. So, we try to mask the sweaty smell from our armpits with perfumed sprays, little realizing that… For more details visit bandrabuzz.com/wellness.html MND
