HAPPY HOUSEHOLDS Today, we have an app to find places, bus & train routes, and even restaurants. But, Taskbob now gives you an app to find people or ‘servicemen’ to do your desired work and that too right at your doorstep! We spoke with Aseem Khare, CEO & Founder, Taskbob. What is Taskbob? Taskbob is a reliable one-stop solution for on-demand home services. Taskbob is a platform that provides speedy home services to customers through its cutting-edge mobile application. The one-of-itskind app offers holistic solutions to all the three quandaries faced by customers regarding the delivery time, quality and the price of such home services. Customers simply have to tap on the required service on the mobile app of Taskbob with the assurance of having servicemen at their doorstep. The platform provides instant, reliable and standardized home services ranging from plumbing, carpentry, electrical, home appliance repair, home and car cleaning

to driver services. To avail Taskbob services, one can tap on any of the service icons on the Taskbob Android app. Our aim at Taskbob is to simplify the process right from finding a reliable serviceman to ensuring service is completed satisfactorily and ontime. What was the idea behind launching Taskbob? While doing my previous start-up of helping people pursue interests, I realised that people in India, face much bigger problems. Problems such as finding a house, evading traffic, getting home services done. While getting any home service done, people in India are never sure about the time, quality and the price of getting the service done. Taskbob was thus conceptualised to create a happier India by addressing this everyday problem, of finding reliable and professional home services, of every Indian. TURN TO PAGE 3 >>

NEWS

Left to right: Co-founders at Taskbob Abhiroop Medhekar, Aseem Khare, Ajay Bhatt and Amit Chahalia Challenges faced The biggest challenge we faced initially was to identify and on-board qualified technicians and servicemen. We then developed an in-house screening and training team. The technicians are now thoroughly evaluated with regards to their ability through Taskbob’s in-house developed technical testing protocols. Secondly, there was no transparency of pricing for the services within this sector. Most technicians and serviceman charged depending on the spending capacity of the customer. We wanted to change this completely. We wanted to professionalize these services as well as standardize the pricing. We undertook extensive market research to arrive at a standard cost for each of the services listed on our app. Customer satisfaction, right pricing and on-time quality service has been our primary focus. We aim to provide high quality services that speak for itself. We always welcome suggestions and feedback from all our customers.

Which service at Taskbob is most searched for? Our driver, cleaning and electrician service gets searched the most. Till June, on an average, we used to receive about 350 queries daily, which increased by 50% during last couple of months. Everyone wants to travel in his/her own car but no one wants to drive. Our Driver service comes to their rescue. Whether it’s a lazy morning when you don’t want to drive to work or drop your kids to school or you going for shopping or parties, we always have a Taskbob Driver for you. Our Car detailing service has won many customers’ hearts because we give their cars the look they fell in love with, the showroom look. And we offer 100% cashback in case the customer is not happy with our services. Our Deep Home Cleaning section is doing exceptionally well, especially our recently launched Regular cleaning, which comes very handy when your maid doesn’t turn up.

How is Taskbob different from its competitors? While there are a few players in this space looking to capitalize on the hyperlocal home services market, what is going to be the key from a consumer’s point of view is – which company could consistently deliver a good service to the consumer. We believe that the company taking end to end responsibility of the service quality is what people in India are looking forward to. Unlike our other competitors, we do take that and make sure that all our customers end up being happy after each service. We only select top 10-20% servicemen we interview and thus we have, by far, the most quality servicemen. Further, we invest heavily in training our servicemen. Taskbob also provides an in-house “merchant app” to make the service assignment and completion amongst servicemen operationally efficient, quicker, and seamless. More than 95% out of 22,000 customers are satisfied with our servicemen. We are the highest rated home services app on Google Play Store with a consistent rating of 4.6*. Our service quality is far ahead than other players in this segment. We have a dedicated supply pool of 300 servicemen, which includes Electricians, Carpenters, Plumbers, servicemen for Home Deep Cleaning, Car Cleaning and Drivers, and is largest across all competitors. We have reserved 300 more servicemen, to cater to our rapidly growing customer base. What are your expansion plans? The company has its focus on covering tier1 cities as of now. We plans to fortify our footprint in Mumbai and then broaden our horizon to other cities in our mission to ‘Create Happy Households’. Taskbob is now present all across Mumbai and Thane barring Navi Mumbai. Information on servicemen We believe we can win the trust and loyalty of the consumers only by delivering what we promise and thus, equipping our servicemen with the right skills is of utmost importance to us. Taskbob already has 300 servicemen on board. We have a stringent process in place to rope in servicemen that includes short listing based on experience and expertise, personal interviews, technical & soft skill tests and background checks. The selected candidates then go through

BANDRA FAIR I, being a Hindu; have been visiting the Bandra Fair since school days. I think it is a tradition which should be kept alive, as it's the beauty of Bandra. Sonia Khanna Walia The Feast really fills the spirits of Bandraites all over the world. People celebrate Bandra Feast in Dubai, Canada, U.S, U.K., Australia and other countries - with all East Indian specialities, like Vindalo, Sorpotel, Fugias, etc. A real good feeling is created. Why would this event stop in Bandra? Stop the spoil sports. Oscar Patel It is great to see the Cement Road without the illegal ramp, this Bandra Fair. Blocking access to devotees going and coming from the shrine during the last few years; via this convenient road, was wrong. This is the victory of People’s Power over evil forces. Noor Hassan GAMBLING AT SKYWALK On the Bandra Sky Walk, I saw a few people gathered in one corner. As I came closer, I could see people gambling and placing bets. It was evening time - around 6pm. I could not see any security on the sky walk – so, I could not complain to anybody. Residents of Bandra need to be aware of this and Bandra Police Marshals should patrol the sky walks to keep anti social elements away. Security is vital, as these are lonely spots. Irfan Shaikh, Social Activist

ATM FRAUD On August 4th at 2.59 pm, I went to the ICICI - Mehboob Studio Branch, withdrew Rs. 2,000 & came home. When I picked up my phone the same evening around 6:30pm to go through my e-mails, I saw a message saying that I had withdrawn Rs. 90000 in 9 transactions of Rs. 10000 between 4.40pm & 5.03pm. I was shocked. I rushed to the same ATM branch and asked them to blocked my card. I was then told I had to go to my bank & fill a ‘Customer Dispute Form’ as well as lodge an F.I.R. with the police. When I went to the Bandra Police Station, the police officer showed me a lady's letter to the same bank where Rs 57,000 was withdrawn. Also, when I went to the bank that evening at 7.30, they told me another gentleman had Rs 20,000 swiped from his account. I guess we all have to be really careful with ATM cards in future - it's crazy, but true. Our hard earned money is not even safe in banks now. Gavin Cason

EDITORIAL

Dear Reader, September sees Bandra play ‘host’ to her neighbouring suburbs and guests from across our vast country. Yes, it is that time of the year to re-connect with long lost cousins, close family and friends; who come to the Mount, as ardent devotees – even in inclement weather conditions. With today’s traffic, this can be a very tiring experience. All entry points: Carter Road, Linking Road, Turner Road, Hill Road, Bandra Reclamation, etc. have crawling cars; that can really test your patience. As you treat them to refreshments and beverages, with nostalgic banter; it breaks your heart, when you kiss them goodbye. The tradition goes back over 300 years. Oldies still cherish memories of the Wig Wam, Well-Of-Death, Whist Drive, September Garden (formerly China Garden), Mini Circus, Magic Mirrors, Family Photo-ops and a lot more of yesteryear’s magical moments. And, today’s youth still remember dreading the time when the cane was bought by their parents and used on them at home. The Carmel Mela is one spot, where the Bandra Fair has continued to create an atmosphere of community connect. With games, events and refreshments for all age groups, this place is packed with happy people, during the entire period of the Bandra Fair. While the old charm has faded, with no vacant plots left for large games and events; some disgruntled recent residents in the Bandra Fair area are not in tune with the spirit of camaraderie - that has been Bandra’s bonding base for centuries. With some fine-tuning and co-operation, we

The whole play area is made up of soft rubber which will not get even a minute scratch to your kid. So, your kid can fall freely as if falling on a ball of cotton! At the heart of the play area, is a slide where you yourself can sit & slide with your kid & relive your childhood! And, if you wish to play with your kid inside the play area, you are free to do so without any hindrance. Staff: When it comes to kids, Safety and Security comes first! And Chuckles has a reliable and responsible staff of young girls who take care of kids with hands that caress and warmth of a mother. Believing in Women Empowerment and Equality of Sexes, Chuckles has no male staff! Neither

is any kid allowed to be even touched by any male stranger. The staff members guard each equipment and ensure that every kid has fun without a mark of hurt. They handle the kids with care, patience, love and a sense of responsibility. Talking and Interacting is the best way to pass time so the staff interacts with parents and kids to make them feel at home and initiate a feeling of belongingness. The staff knows each and every parent and kid personally, and cares for them as a family. Ambiance: Have you ever wondered why kids don’t like to play at home for a long time? Because, a cheerful environment is what kids look for! Chuckles has a colourful beautiful environment with pictures of cartoons, drawings on the walls, decoration, good ventilation, sanitation and soothing music. Nursery rhymes, poetries and birthday songs are continuously played to keep the place lively and educate the kids by the art of listening. Dheeraj says, “Sometimes, kids are seen tapping their feet to the tune of the music while playing. It is a sight worth watching! Food and Toys: After running around and playing, the first thing you need is water and food! And the Cafeteria at Chuckles has a variety of foodstuffs like chips, nachos, pop corn, wafers, different types of tea, coffee that will compel you to grab a bite. ‘Food is not worth eating if not fresh’, so Chuckles provides only fresh packaged food. A perfect blend of fine teas & Indian classical music in the heart of Mumbai EAT OUT

Morning… without a cup of tea? Arrghhh!... Sounds so incomplete! And so, to refresh your day and give you an energising kick start for your daily activities, The Taj Mahal Tea House is opened

at St. John Baptist Road, Bandra. The country’s most loved indigenous tea brand from Hindustan Unilever welcomes tea connoisseurs and lovers of classical Indian music for a unique experience. The finest set of In-

dian teas selected by the Taj Mahal tea sommeliers, a carefully designed menu and the ambient sound of classical music, together recreate the magic and mystique of tea for every visitor. Bandra being a home of tea lovers, The Taj Mahal Tea House refreshes everyone with their mesmerising variety of tea and soothing ambience. Amidst the oldworldly Bandra lane, The Taj Mahal Tea House is an oasis of calm; a place to find serenity and relieve stress. With its appealing vintage look, the Tea House has a meandering feel and is essentially a wind-me-down place. How can Taj Mahal Tea be complete without a touch of classical music and traditional feel? So, in line with the brand’s legacy, it hosts installations of Ustad Zakir Hussain’s Tabla and Niladri Kumar’s Sitar which serve as an inspiration. A ‘baithak’ space with an acoustic design, a naturally lit patio area and a quaint corner for book reading are all under one roof at the Taj Mahal Tea House. Every element and intricate design at the tea house tells a tale of fine craftsmanship and perfectly complements the flavours of tea served here. Tea is spellbound to taste only if it is refreshing and rejuvenates your mood! And Taj Mahal Tea House provides perfect combinations of refreshing ingredients and flavoured spices. You will find a Kashmiri Saffron tea sitting comfortably with a Royal Jaipuri tea, a Malabari tea, a Parsi Mint tea and even a Bold Spices tea – all of which have been created with the help of authentic tea recipes. For the connoisseur, the tea house has the exquisite teas like the Darjeeling 2nd flush, Jasmine Pearls tea and an inimitable Smoky Mountain tea. And for those who like it cold; the tea menu also has refreshing iced teas, tea lemonades, smoothies and lattes. All of these are brewed to perfection through a live ‘chai

bar’ in the centre of the Tea House, that will instantly make you sit up and say ‘Wah Taj!’ A little something to much in is what we look for, as we gulp down our morning tea! So, complementing the teas is an allday tea-pairing menu that has been carefully crafted by French chef Gregory Bazire. This wholesome menu includes savouries that are best enjoyed with tea such as the Parsi Brun Maska with homemade jam, the Arabic falafel chaat and a delicious breakfast menu that most Indians would love with their cup of tea in the morning. Warm muffins and biscuits baked at the Tea House also lie at your service to go perfectly with the evening chai. “As pioneers of innovation in the Indian tea market, presenting Indian tea lovers with a space that gives them a unique tea drinking experience was a natural next step. Through the Taj Mahal Tea House, we want to further cultivate the love for tea and bring alive the brand’s cultural legacy and association with classical music. Taj Mahal Tea House is our endeavor to take tea connoisseurs on an unforgettable journey into a world of fine and freshly brewed teas,” said Geetu Verma, Executive Director, Food and Refreshments at Hindustan Unilever Ltd. Brooke Bond Taj Mahal Tea has stayed at the forefront of innovation in the Indian tea industry. And now, it has come to your vicinity to make your day with a hot cup of tea! So, if you are tired of your routine work, want to start a new, wish to begin your day with serenity and peace of mind, then gulp down a cup of tea at the Taj Mahal Tea House and get mesmerised by the enchanting ambience! A Personification of Style & Elegance The human face and hair make for some beautiful canvases. And no one transforms them better than Elton Steve Vessoaker. Everything he touches becomes perfection. Fresh off the Lakme Fashion Week Ramp, he chats about what it’s like to don so many versatile hats. “Style is when they're running you out of town and you make it look like you're leading the parade.” William Battie

Creative director of Nalini’s Salon, Bandra. Hairstylist. Make-up artist. Educator. In the hair and make-up industry alone, Elton plays many roles to perfection with his unique sense of what works and what doesn’t. About to complete his 10th year at Nalini’s, Elton feels they should change the board now. “The sign should read Nalini and Elton’s,” he jokes. Love is in the Hair “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” - Dr. Seuss Elton’s desire to constantly learn, continuously work hard, and his never flagging drive and determination have taken him places. His passion to discover and more importantly, to learn from the best, from innovators, has taken him far. “I have done my advanced hair cutting in London at Vidal Sassoon and my colour training at the Wella World Studio in New York. I have also represented India at the Wella World Trend Vision Competition in 2010, held in Paris and at the P&G Salon at the Wella Studio at the London Olympics in 2012. Besides this, I have had the opportunity to style brides at destination weddings around the world. These include Bali, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, and I will be adding Mexico to that list very soon.” From all the styling he does, Elton loves doing hair and make-up for bridals. “Getting them ready for their big day, it’s the best kind of gratification as a stylist. Each preference, personality, ideas and needs are vastly different from the previous or the next bride. It’s a new chapter for them. And I get to style that chapter and add my touch to it.” Acting the Part “With any part you play, there is a certain amount of yourself in it.” - Johnny Depp The year 2011 saw Elton taking on the mantle of actor in Hindi action thriller film ‘Game’. While the role was small, for Elton, the experience was a remarkable one. “I was a make-up artist, who was threatening the actor in the film because I’d witnessed a murder. To be honest, I thank God my role had me scared all the time, because I was scared while shooting. Actors get treated like royalty on set, and that treatment was extended to me. I enjoyed every moment of it, but I kept thinking, ‘Are you serious, people live like this, ALL the time?’ #Ungender “A gender-equal society would be one where the word 'gender' does not exist.” - Gloria Steinem

Elton spends a lot of time behind the scenes, getting people ready for camera. Elle magazine’s #Ungender had him once again stepping in front of the camera in a gorgeous avatar. The exhibition, held from March 12-26, this year, at High Street Phoenix in Mumbai, was a part of the FOCUS Photography Festival. “#UnGender was basically about breaking stereotypes. The magazine felt I would fit into this theme of androgyny, based on my own personal style statements, which are very gender breaking. They thought I’d be a great representative of this collection of pictures.” While Elton didn’t think much about stepping in front of the camera, it’s true that hindsight’s 20-20. “I didn’t think about it much at first. Neither did I realize how big the impact of it would be till I saw the exhibition in its entirety. When I saw the actual collection and I figured out what the message and the meaning was, it brought things in perspective and then I thought, wow, this is great.” Conducting Angels “I was born with music inside me. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene.” - Ray Charles Come, Sunday, August 16, 2015 and Elton donned a new hat at the St. Andrew’s All Bandra Parish Talent Contest’ - ZONALS 2015, the 60th Presentation. He was the Conductor for the South West Choral Group. And as with most things that have Elton’s touch, the group won and will be performing with the winners from other categories on September 5 and 6, 2015. “That was the most amazing thing I’ve done in a while,” he enthuses. “The only thing that made it come together was 100% hard work. You have to commit to everything and do so many things to make it all perfect. It was incredible to work with people of different age groups.” So will Elton take up the conductor sticks in the future? “I wish things like this can happen again in a year. Without a 100% support, it’s difficult to decide if I should do this again, maybe at Christmas.” Conducting at the Zonals was an exhilarating platform for Elton because he worked with people he had dealt with before, and he had the help of people who could read music, he added. “On

a grander scale, I would be nervous because I don’t read music. Everything I do music-wise is by ear. I arrange parts as I play. So, as much as I would want to, there is still that anxiety with people I don’t know.” LFW 2015 “Fashion should be a form of escapism, and not a form of imprisonment.” - Alexander McQueen That brings Elton to Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2015. Elton took to the ramp to bring to life vivacious Kristy De Cunha’s collection entitled ‘Be Aware of the Rabbit Hole’. Speaking about the same, Elton explains, “You need t o first understand Kristy’s collection. Usually, we hear the phrase ‘beware of the rabbit hole’. Kristy is saying Be AWARE of it because you don’t know when you are going to go spiraling down and into what. Sometimes we have two faces. Her collection is asking us to not be scared of it but to be aware of it. Kristy knew she wanted her show to be as over the top as her designs. We were chatting and bouncing ideas and decided it would be astounding if there were someone singing live at her show. We began to work on a song that would fit in with her work and Lady Gaga’s ‘Do What You Want With My Body’ was apt. We didn’t think Lakmé would actually let us do it but they were as excited as we were. So there I was, on August 26, singing live on the ramp at Lakmé Fashion Week 2015 at Palladium.” Future Continuous “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.” - William Shakespeare From music and dance to hairstyling to actor to conductor and now the ramp. So what’s next on the cards for Elton? “There’s never been a plan. In the sense that, I never said I would do this and then do that. There have always been interesting opportunities that have come my way, from which I haven’t shied away. If someone asks me to try something, I won’t commit to it immediately but I will give it a shot. Let me hear it. Let me see it. I like doing interesting things, things that are tasteful and not random. I’ve been blessed that great opportunities have come my way and I’ve not had to go searching for them.” Ayesha Dominica

Want some Magic in your Life?

TALENT

Do you believe that Miracles are true? Do you believe in Magic and Wizards? Well, you will be awestruck to meet two spellbound wizards wandering in your vicinity, right here in Bandra! Ian Fernandes and Azhar Pirani, two young magicians, have fascinated and captivated entire Bandra under their magic spell with their magic wand. And, the exciting part is that they don’t have a magic wand or a magic hat or some weird mantra! All that they do is perform magic tricks with whatever they see around like a simple pen, paper, ring, coin, glass, rubber band, pin…Basically, they do magic tricks with anything they find and anywhere they can! Right from the streets of Bandra to profound clubs, they have done their magic everywhere! Emerging from the gallies of Chapel Road, Ian and Azhar, both have been doing magic tricks since 8 years. Magic attracted them, fascinated their minds and triggered their curiosity during their college days. 25 year-old Ian says, “I was fascinated when my Grandpa showed me a magic trick with a coin. I was both bewildered and curious with that trick and from that day, I started with magic. And, till today I love doing that simple trick in a number of different ways.” From that day, Ian’s quest for magic tricks began. He read several magic books, watched videos, learned psychology and hypnotism to study the human mind. And, today he is a profound mind reader and uses this mind game in his magic to divert people’s mind and mesmerise them by his skills. Ian also spent five years of his youth on the ship as a magician, thus visiting different countries and meeting people of varied cultures. Yet, ‘destiny finds its own way’ and today he has resigned from his job at the ship and is back to his homeland, to his very own Bandra; back to his passionMagic! He says, “Though I have visited many countries, India is where magic began. So, I want to expand magic in this already magical country.” Azhar; a quiet, introvert, 26 year-old

magician, lets his magic do the talking! He was fascinated during his college days when one of his friend vanished a cigarette. Curiosity rung in his mind & he wanted to know how his friend had done it! But, unfortunately, his friend refused to reveal the trick. And, that is it! At that moment itself, Azhar decided to find out the trick behind it. And his search began, his journey led him through magic books, videos, research, practice & finally he figured out not one but a hundred of magic tricks done in a hundred different ways. He says, “I perform magic tricks not for my personal appraisal but I love the audience reaction. They are surprised, puzzled, shocked, happy, awestruck, curious and above all fascinated by magic.” Juggling through various professions like BPO jobs, corporate offers, model co-ordinator, Azhar finally decided to do what makes him happy- Magic! Both these magicians along with another Bandra boy, Javion Rodrigues, who works as their Business Head, have established their own start-up company named - ‘Urban Shaman’ denoting City Wizards. Although it is a 2 month-old company, these guys are highly positive and extremely passionate about what they do and

SAUCY, CHEESY, DELECTABLE

have already made considerable business. And, they are growing and expanding and improving and entertaining. They perform magic tricks while they walk, talk, travel, hang out, busy doing something or even when they have nothing to do. They perform at various street corners, malls, clubs, pubs, weddings, celebrations, birthday parties, events, orphanages, old age homes, social platforms and even at tea stalls or hotels; just to fascinate whoever they meet! Often, they randomly walk up to a pub or a club on a lazy evening, just to practice their tricks and entertain the crowd. For they believe that - ‘The more you do it, the more you work on it; the more you’ll learn, the better you’ll become.’ Improving their skills and adding spellbound innovations to magic every day, becoming the ‘Best Magicians of Asia’ is their goal! They stand out from the rest for they use their own creativity and techniques to transform a simple magic trick into an incredible game. They don’t use the usual props like hats, flowers and birds but give a magical touch to everything that they see around. They like to keep it organic, practical and simple! And the best part of them is that they are among the few magicians who

are not much hesitant to reveal their tricks, provided you are interested in Magic and willing to take the effort to learn and practice. Ian says, “I have practised for hours together before the mirror to improve myself, polish my skills and become better.” Azhar adds, “Anyone can perform Magic tricks if he is keen and willing to work towards it.” Javion says, “Urban Shaman is open to help young people and all those who are interested in learning magic. In fact, we are planning to teach people magical tricks through classes or sessions in the future. We want to expand, spread magic and make your lives magical.” In this era of start-ups & young entrepreneurs, these 3 Bandra boys have given up the corporate routine life & taken the risk to do something different. They believe that a lot of talent & potential is hidden in every person and you need to make the most of it. They live by the principle - ‘Do what you LOVE’. TALENT

The St. Andrew’s All Bandra Parish Talent Competition completes its 60th anniversary this year. This annual extravaganza serves the dual purpose of bringing hidden talent all over Bandra out into the open and encouraging a roaring community spirit among the parishes of our suburb. A friendly but keen competition exists between four zones, which battle it out in six main areas – instrumental, vocal, elocution, poster, dance and dramatics. The re-

sult is four weekends full of extremely entertaining and high quality performances by competitors who span a wide range of age groups. On 16th August, the first Zonal Sunday this year, we saw the young musical talent of Bandra perform, with the under 16 contestants in the vocal and instrumental categories taking the stage. The audience also enjoyed the choral competition, with the four choirs giving their best in a closely-run

race. On 23rd August, the contestants above 16 years shone brightly in the vocal and instrumental categories, while the afternoon was taken up by the vocal harmonies of the duet and quartet competition. The bar rises higher every year, and these two melodious Sundays were greatly enjoyed by all the music lovers in the audience. On 30th August the elocution and dance competitions will take place, while our finale weekend, on the 5th and 6th of Sep-

tember, as per tradition will showcase the winners of the previous Sundays along with the dramatics. All 4 zones are already hard at work on their plays and the finale promises to be a huge success. Make sure you book your tickets for a truly entertaining evening of music and drama. Tickets for the finale are available at St. Andrew Church every evening from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues Memorial Debate Perhaps one of Bandra's most anticipated events, The "Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues Memorial Debate", is back with a bang in its 17th year, hosted by one of Mumbai's finest technical institutions, Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues College of Engineering. Inaugurated in the year 1999, the competition in its initial years served as a podium for students within the local vicinity of Mumbai to engage in a friendly têteà-tête; it has since then evolved to a more compelling force, serving as a host to students from various disciplines, institutes across the nation to come together and showcase their oratory skills. Students are expected to engage in a cogent, scintillating yet passionate ‘Battle of Words’, articulating a diversity of topics

ranging from socio-economic and political trends gripping the nation to more banal issues. The debate aims to provide a forum for today’s youth to articulate views and engage in a dialogue on a myriad of affairs that affect our lives, directly or otherwise. The quality of thoughts and ideas expressed by students over the past debates has been lauded by all those who have witnessed the events, some of them being Former MP Priya Dutt, Mrs. Shraddha Jadhav, Mr. Kumar Ketkar, Ms. Mahrukh Inayet, Mr. Madhur Bhandarkar, Mr. Ashok Pandit, Mr. Mahesh Bhatt, Mr. Prakash Jha, Mrs. Dolly Thakore, Mr. Arnab Goswami, Mrs. Bachi Karkaria and other eminent personalities from the fields of Education, Social Ac-

tivism and Media. Similar to its preceding years, the Father Conceicao Rodrigues Memorial Debate will play host to 32 teams from some of the most established institutions across the nation due to be held on the 11th and 12th of September. Reality is often veiled under several layers of thread made of human perception. Like a mist, covering the hillside, the perceptions of our minds often covers parts of the truth that is truly before us. Now, the question arises, should we remove that mist? But it’s soothing, it’s appeasing, it’s becalming. Is the truth more important? Or is it true when they say “ignorance is bliss”? Seeking answers to these questions we introduce our theme: “Appeasing mists shrouding the hills of reality” This year’s

theme is as eloquent as it is mellifluous. The inspiring message here being that the reality as we see it is simply an amalgam of warped distortions; that to find the true essence of truth, of light... we must delve deeper into the abyss and embrace the darkness. Being one of the most anticipated Inter-Collegiate events in the literary circles of the city, a lot of effort is put into providing a platform to the youth of the country to put forth their views in a disciplined and rational manner through this debate. It is our intention to keep this tradition alive in an attempt to encourage today's youth to think rationally and engage themselves in the more crucial matters of the nation. Maxwell Dsouza

Here is a step by step organising of this mega contest Ever since December 1970 when the Sir J. J. College of Commerce organised the First Secretary of the Year Contest , it has become a much sort after event taking place every once in two years, now organised by the Indian Association of Secretaries and Administration Professionals (IASAP) on an All India basis. This year too the Mumbai Headquarters of IASAP under the stewardship of AllIndia President, Yvonne Alphonso and her team on the Governing Council organised this mega event. A lot of planning and preparation preceded the contest for IASAP Members and also Non-Members by way of circulars, posters, advertisements spreading the message to the business community. Simultaneously the other six chapters at Tamil Nadu, Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi, Bangalore and West Bengal were also gearing up to organise the contest in their respective cities.

Stage 1 – Contest form submission which counted for evaluation. Stage 2 – Witten test , simultaneously administered to 15 contestants in Mumbai and contestants at the six chapters. Stage 3 – Training session on Group Discussion and Personal Interview techniques. Stage 4 – Preliminary round moderated by three eminent judges. The topic for discussion on “Swachh Bharat and how effective it is”, followed by a personal interview, which was mutually rewarding for both contestants and judges! The names of the six finalists were then announced. Stage 5 – Six finalists underwent a public speaking training session . Stage 6 – The finale - extempore round and announcement of the Winners, who will vie for the All-India title at the National Convention in September at Hyderabad Kudos to Yvonne and her team for organising this very much looked forward event on the Administrative Professionals’ calendar!

Light Up The Dark World Of A Fellow Human An eye donation is the greatest gift, a human being can give to another human being. It can help in giving vision to people who have corneal blindness. Our eye is like a camera and the ‘Cornea’ is like the lens of the camera, that allows light to enter inside and focus it onto the ‘Retina’ of the eye. When the front part of the eye loses its transparency and doesn’t allow light to enter properly, a person loses sight due to corneal blindness. An eye donation entails donating the eyes of individuals who are dead. The process of removing the eyes involves no disfigurement of the face. Eye transplantation is done by an eye bank. The services provided by an eye bank are usually free of cost. They do not charge anything for removal, storage or distribution of eyes to the needy.

They may charge a nominal cost for investigations done on the eyes, to ensure that they are of good quality before transplantation. Two prominent eye banks which service area in and around Bandra are: EBCRC (2416 2929) and Lilavati Hospital. The cornea from the eyeball is then transplanted at an eye hospital such as Eye Life, which has an ophthalmologist - who is fellowship trained for performing complex corneal transplant surgery. Legally, a ‘consent letter’ with signatures of two next of kin and the death certificate are required to undertake an eye donation. The importance of pledging ones eye for donation is that you receive a pledge card with information about the eye bank that you can contact in time of death of a relative or friend. Also, it gives an opportunity to discuss about your

willingness for eye donation with your relatives and friends; so that they can take the step of informing the eye bank, after your death. Eyes can be retrieved from a body up to 6 hours after death. There is no age limitation for donating eyes. People who had spectacles or eye diseases or even had undergone eye surgeries, can donate eyes provided the cornea of their eyes is healthy. If the eyes of all 62,000 of those who die in India daily are donated, it will take us only 11 days to completely eradicate the burden of treatable corneal blindness from the face of India. However, it is a shame that often we have to import eyes from Sri Lanka. An Eye Donation can light up the dark world of a fellow human being. All that is required at your end is the commitment to contribute to this cause of voluntary eye donation, by spreading awareness about it - and counselling the next

of kin of the deceased members, about the importance of the cause. Let us all pledge to donate our eyes after death and also motivate our near and dear ones to participate in this noble act. In view of the ‘International Eye Donation Fortnight’, you can pledge to donate your eyes for donation after death at Eye Life, an Eye Hospital for Personalized Eye Care at Linking Road, Khar West. You can also request for a free talk on “Eye Donation” and “Eye Care in the Smartphone Era – How to take care of your Eyes” for a group of at least 20 people. Bandraites experience Industrial Tour to Seimens India

throughout our visit. We were late due to a car bumping into our bus. Not a word or indication of irritation. Our delayed lunch upset the workers canteen time. Yet, they sat down in order patiently waiting. We were given safety clothes right down to chip loaded shoe strap and guiding leaders were always there to help us. Remember this was a very high voltage area with very heavy machinery. Even static electricity was a problem, due to delicate electronic components. Now it is easy to believe that for Siemens it is really and truly ‘Customer First’ policy. As one visitor proclaimed at the feedback time: We have become brand ambassadors of anything electronic of Siemens! We need to record the joyful, enjoyable & yet well managed visit by Altina Securities Pvt. Limited. The Top Management itself joined us & became one like us. Thank you, Clifton DeSilva - Director of Altina. I am glad the bus was packed to the full from. It just indicates the desire for knowledge that people have - and the hunger to learn from others who are industrial leaders in the country and worldwide. With gratitude for being part of this visit arranged and managed so beautifully by Altina Securities.” Indeed, it was an incredible experience. Sujata Singh

Altina Securities as a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility is committed to its twin objectives of promoting entrepreneurship as well as financial literacy. These objectives are achieved through investment seminars, workshops, mentoring sessions; industrial tours etc. and all these initiatives are free of cost to participants. Over the past few years Altina Securities has organized several industrial tours some of which include Tata Motors Ltd - Pune, Autoline Industries Ltd. – Pune, Terminal Technologies Pvt. Ltd. – Pune, Rewale Engineering Pvt. Ltd. – Pune, Bharat Coach Builders Pvt. Ltd. – Taloja, Flamingo Pharmaceuticals Ltd. – Taloja, Chances Resorts & Casino – Goa, Quadros Motors Pvt. Ltd. Goa. These industrial tours expose aspiring entrepreneurs to the various ways companies’ different sectors of the economy function. Recently Altina Securities organized an industrial tour to the facilities of Siemens India at Nashik. A batch of 30 participants were able to get an overview of the products and services of the company, as well as the way the company is managed. All the participants were highly impressed on the way Siemens is managed and how they were keen to adopt some high quality management practices. Many Bandraites got an opportunity to see state of the art German facilities of Siemens India (Nashik) Yes, this was Altina Securities CSR testimony of exposing entrepreneurs to econ-

omy function. Charles Crasto expressed his testimonial, in these words: “The Industrial visit to Siemens at Nashik was very educative. Excitement was in the air continuously, as we were shown one technological success after another. Most of us were nontechnical, as far as engineering was concerned. And yet, it was a marvel how those at Siemens who showed us around, made it simple to understand. We feel safer now when we travel by Indian Railways, as we learnt of the Siemens technology behind that safety. We were proud at the ‘Make in India’ mark for our heavy industries, like iron foundries & cement plants.

It is some kind of a joke when one depicts & describes Indian workers. One has just to see the perfect discipline & friendly behaviour of the workforce at Siemens, Nasik, to relearn & correct this. Another Indian image of Indians not being clean was given a beating. The industrial manufacturing place was as clean as our homes, if not cleaner. Safety was another grand marker. Not a single accident in two & half years! How's that! It was technology of safety & training that did it. Everything was designed for safety. ‘Customer First’ was another proud claim of the posters to the employees. We visitors were treated as ‘Visitors First’

5th August, 2015 was a date when I experienced my Cinderella transformation.. when I walked into VOUS salon, I was welcomed with enchanting interiors of ‘a palais seeming purple wall with glamorous frames and a stunning chandelier’, warm smiles of the parlor experts alongside assured targets to change me from being just a college girl with no purpose of impressing any individual, moreover myself. Keratin treatment is no good for you as it causes cancer, the advised treatment is cystine which is a protein infusion – This was conveyed to me from the knowledgeable owner of VOUS – Sneha who does not advise the use of the treatment in her parlor. My thick and rough hair caused due to this reason and tired looking appearance was a task to work on. The hair stylist analyzed the condition of my hair and assured me that my hair will further be in for a delightful treat! VOUS offers an incredible result out of the use of its Moroccan oil and Moroccan serum, after a very soothing head massage I received, my stresses were given ease and I felt calmed. While my hair was being styled, I was already being pampered with my first man-

icure, ever. I gained information on how a manicure makes your nails soft and well shaped, also, after the cuticles of my nails were cleaned, it lead me to feel a sensation of neatness. The surprise given to me by VOUS was the most super as when I looked into the mirror to see my hair, I had been given bouncy teasing curls on the ends which was my favorite kind of hairstyle that I had desired since my younger age, I truly felt as though it was my birthday and told one of the VOUS experts the same, She sensed the happiness on my face and even wished me Happy Birthday! What an unforgettable experience… But my makeover did not end there; the best was definitely saved for last. Yes, this was when Sneha applied the Express makeup over my face, not only was she thoroughly skilled but the dedication and care she takes to make every customer feel confident about themselves is worth a generous applause! Wondering when and where had Sneha become equipped to start on her dream?? From Toni and Guy’s Academy in Singapore at the ripe age of 18, Sneha established ‘VOUS’ at Nepansea Road by the time she was just 21, how ambitious and focused! Sneha, you are blessed and a blessing. A wholehearted thank you to you and your brilliant team! Anushka Dutt

For a guy who cuts his hair just once in 2 years and rarely takes care of his skin, VOUS salon did its magic on me with the neat clean up and hair styling! I felt so fresh, amazingly bright and vividly energetic! I felt the orange juice penetrating in my skin and rejuvenating my cells with a sense of distinct chilling effect. The sooth-

ing massage by Zaie, an extremely kind and talented beautician, relieved my stress to a great extent. I could sense my skin glowing and my hair in shape in just 45mins! All I can say- I look human now! Thank you VOUS for this makeover, I am coming again!… Ronald Rodrigues
