Murder in Canton shocks community BY GIANNA DECARLO
EDITOR@BALTIMOREGUIDE.COM
At 6 p.m. on Friday, August 28, police were called to the 800 block of S. Clinton St. to investigate a “non-breather” inside the location. The victim, found suffering from multiple gunshots wounds, was pronounced dead at the scene. Identified as Michael Charles Thompson, the victim was a 44-year-old white male. “Homicide detectives responded out and assumed the investigation. Initially, this incident was believed to have been a suicide, however, after further investigation this case has now been officially ruled a homicide,” states the Baltimore Police Department. According to police, the homicide happened sometime between Wednesday, August 26 and Friday, August 28. The front and back doors of the residence were b tho unlocked. Neighbors were concerned that it might have been a breaking and entering gone wrong. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Republican joins councilman race Matt McDaniel, a lawyer from Canton, is running as a Republican for the 1st district councilman position. “Everybody likes to complain and if you think your ideas are better you almost have an obligation to try to help people, and put it out there and give people an option,” he said about his motivations for running. McDaniel said his campaign is based around numbers and how these numbers reflect and impact Baltimore City. For example, he said the announced 2015 budget is worrying for Baltimore’s future. “Looking at the city’s 2015 budget, by 2022 we’re looking at the rosiest projection which is that we’re going to be 250 million dollars in debt, the not so rosy projection is 750 million in debt. To put that into perspective, that’s almost the entire income the city gets from property tax in a year.” He also expressed concerns over reports that the city has only experienced a .3% growth in the past four years. Increasing this growth is one of his major platforms. He said there needs to be an incentive program for buyers that encourages new people to come into and stay in Baltimore. Such incentives include lowering property taxes for new buyers. McDaniel wants to increase “ownership” which means that people take pride in their communities. To do so, residents need to be able to afford to move to the city and own a home, which fosters the pride and sense of responsibility. The tax cuts would also be applied to small businesses to reduce their overhead costs. McDaniel said he wants to see small businesses thrive and become large

businesses because they are supported by the city. He said the Inner Harbor is a good example of supporting growth and development. McDaniel also said that being a lone Republican candidate on the city council will give him a position to call out corruption and financial wastefulness. “We can bring people in front of us and point blank ask them where the money is going. Where is the outrage?” He references the case of former CitiStat director Mark H. Grimes who was just fired even though the mayor knew he wasn’t producing reports since April. “It’s the culture that we need to get out of. It’s so broken and what’s worse about it, if you look out for eight years or ten years and you see that we can’t afford this, it’s mortgaging the future and giving in to incompetence. The status quo is not working and it’s not helping people. All I hear is goals, but where’s the plan?”

As for the controversial issue of the Red Line, McDaniel said that he opposed it but now that the decision is made, people should move on and look for alternatives. “Whether you were for or against it, regardless of that, the issue has been decided. We need new ideas. We need solid proposals.” He believes that the modes of transportation need to be linked together, which is something the Red Line didn’t do. As for crime control, he states the police force has to be more transparent and available to the public and to work with the State’s Attorney to ensure crimes against 1st district residents are tracked and reported back to interested community members. Currently, McDaniel is the only

Republican to announce his run against the five Democratic hopefuls. “The last republican was elected to the city council in 1938. We have had singleparty rule on Baltimore City’s city council longer than there’s been a North Korea,” said McDaniel. He also said he realizes that while he wouldn’t have a chance in other districts, he is hopeful because Governor Larry Hogan won the district during last year’s gubernatorial race. “In my mind, it’s running for economic opportunity, looking at the budget, and being able to advocate on behalf of the first district. I think the message carries through the rest of the city,” said McDaniel. “It’s not just a Canton message, it’s a message I think resonates through every community because people, no matter who they are, they want to succeed. People are ready for change. They’re tired of seeing the city portrayed badly, they’re tired of leaders who they think don’t care or are in it for themselves.” McDaniel said that he will fight against the odds by canvassing the neighborhood and listening to the concerns of the citizens. “People need to know there’s another voice out there. We can’t run like we’re just putting a warm body there. I don’t think these ideas are partisan. I think these are ideas that people want to hear and I think a lot of people are just tired of the status quo. It’s actually looking at the problems and I haven’t heard anyone who would address them.” For more information on McDaniel and his campaign, visit www.mcdanielfor districtone.com.

CANTON MURDER: Victim was targeted CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
“Whoever did this possibly knew him, no signs of forced entry, nothing taken from the home, so right now we believe this was a targeted incident in this community,” said T.J. Smith, the director of media relations for the BPD, at a press conference. Court documents show Thompson had pleaded guilty to one count of child pornography and one count of the possession of drugs with the intent to sell in 2010. He served a year in jail. Thompson was listed on the Sex Offender Registry at his current address as late as May 2014. According to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, he was no longer on the list due to a ruling made by the Maryland Court of Appeals in June 2014. The decision ruled that sex offenders
were unconstitutionally being retroactively punished for their crimes by being on the registry and thus were removed. Court records indicate that Thompson was attempting to get the charges expunged from his record earlier this year. His past came as a surprise to many neighbors who knew him. “We’re not sure if anything in the victim’s past has anything to do with what happened to him, but our investigators look at every angle and the past will be part of it. But at this time, we’re trying to catch a murderer,” said Smith. Anyone with information is asked to call the Metro Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-866-7LOCKUP. Local police forces are preparing for protests and unrest during hearings about the Freddie Gray case which start on Wednesday, September 2 at the Circuit Court in downtown Baltimore City. The first court hearing on Wednesday will determine whether the indictments against the six officers will be upheld or if State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby will be recused. Activists and organizations such as the Baltimore People’s Power Assembly are planning on protesting outside the city courthouse during the hearings. They will protest further if they are not satisfied with the court’s decision. “We demand that the officers be indicted, convicted, and jailed! No change of venue!” states the Power Assembly’s event on Facebook. The organization Baltimore BLOC is encouraging residents to commit “nonviolent acts of civil disobedience this week and next” and to purposefully obstruct areas. The protests are allegedly scheduled in

locations where the majority of the population is white. Canton, the Inner Harbor, Fell’s Point and Hampden were specifically named. The majority’s of April’s unrest occurred in West Baltimore, where 25-year-old Freddie Gray died while in police custody due to a severe spinal injury. Earlier this week, the Baltimore Police announced they were canceling officer leave to maximize officer numbers in light of any unrest. Interim Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said this is just a precautionary measure and not unusual for the department to do. The Baltimore Sheriff’s Office also announced an increased police presence. “Our intelligence is not predicting unrest. We do know that there will undoubtedly be some level of protests or presence by a lot of folks,” Davis said. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said the city will “treat a protest like a protest and a riot like a riot”. An official trial for the officers charged in Freddie Gray’s death is scheduled for October 13.

Baltimore Children’s Choir helps children find their voice BY GIANNA DECARLO
EDITOR@BALTIMOREGUIDE.COM
The Baltimore Children’s Choir is coming to Highlandtown. Their goal is to reach a wider range of potential singing superstars. The choir, which was originally called the Handel Children’s Choir, has a branch in the Tuscany-Canterbury neighborhood in north Baltimore. According to Joey Shortall, the artistic director of the Children’s Choir, this location wasn’t reaching far enough. He said that they often auditioned children from other areas, but there was a lack of consistent transportation for them. “One of the things we’re really working at is to reach children throughout Baltimore city. When we looked at the current make-up of most children’s choirs they were all based in the Towson/Timonium area or off 83 and not really reaching the east or west side of Baltimore city,” said Shortall. With this knowledge, the Highlandtown chapter at Abbott Memorial Presbyterian Church at 3426 Bank St was formed. “Our big mission is to help develop student’s musical skills through music theory lessons, CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

baltimore children’s choir: singing in Highlandtown CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9
through vocal pedagogy, and they’ll receive choral instruction,” said Shortall. “With our older singers, they’ll receive a ten to 15-minute personal coaching every other week to help their voices along. It’s not necessarily a voice lesson, but a healthy opportunity for them to sing.” Something unique about the Highlandtown chapter is that the associate director is bilingual, something that will increase the lines of communication between the choir and the community. “One of the things that I felt was important when we decided to move here and pursue this opportunity is really trying to open that door,” said Shortall. The choir allows children from kindergarten age to those in the 12 grade. Shortall said that the kindergarteners through 1st graders are called “Music Makers” and work with instructors who introduce them to music and “learning general music lessons, a lot of exploring music through movement.” The “Treble Choir” are 2nd through 5th graders and the “Concert Choir” are students from 6th to 12th grade. The choirs will come together in the next few months to put on winter and spring
showcases. The choirs also do community outreach by performing at local senior centers and schools. The Highlandtown choir and the TuscanyCanterbury choir will come together for the Young Voices of Maryland festival in February 2016. He said it’s more about fostering a love of music than molding somebody into a future Grammy winner. “We’re really trying to encourage getting to perform, getting to do solos, trying something else and doing the best you can. I work at creating a safe environment. Singing is so much a part of you, it’s opening yourself up. It’s not like hiding behind an instrument, it a part of you. If someone makes a mistake, we move on.” Shortall said the one thing he doesn’t tolerate is laughing when someone makes a mistake. He doesn’t want the students to feel discouraged. He retold a story about his first years teaching where a young boy was nervous about his first concert. He was comforted by knowing he would be performing amongst his friends and has since thrived as a vocalist. “There’s always positive reinforcement.” Shortall stresses that you just need to be

passionate and willing to work in order to be a part of the choir. “If you love to sing, you’re pretty much in. I want to hear your voice, and what you can do and what I can do to your voice, to see how receptive you are and what does and doesn’t work for you. That’s how I approach it. You don’t have to have the best voice ever, it’s really about if you can work with it.”
The Baltimore Children’s Choir is holding auditions at Abbott Memorial Presbyterian Church on September 3 and 10, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Rehearsals for accepted performers will begin on September 17. Shortall is hoping to have a choir of 15-20 children. For more information on the program, visit www.baltimorechildrenschoir.com.

East Baltimore Eats BY RACHEL LIPTON
Small Plates & Brunch at Cava Mezze There aren’t too many places in Baltimore where you can get the same brunch experience that you can get in NYC or DC, but that’s okay. Baltimore doesn’t want to be another city, we are embodied with our own quirkiness that can’t be found elsewhere. However, sometimes on the weekend I do want the brunch experience that can be found in larger metropolises. Fortunately, Cava Mezze recently opened in Harbor East. Ignoring my usual 90-day rule, I grabbed some friends and we headed over to Cava Mezze for all-youcan-eat brunch and one cent mimosas. When we were seated, we obviously each started with a mimosa, the options were orange juice or grapefruit. Normally with a bottomless mimosa, I find that they are a little watered down (like at Little Havana) and for better or worse, these, fortunately, were not watered down at all and very strong. The menu at Cava Mezze is all small plates (perfect for sharing). We told our awesome waitress, Angelina, what types of things we enjoyed and left the ordering to her. The French Toast was made with thick challah, honey, berries, and cream. This happened to be one of my favorite things we ordered because the bread was slightly doughy like bread pudding. The other hit all around the table was the Nutella Waffle. It’s a Belgian waffle sandwich with Nutella slathered between the waffle and then topped with whipped cream, chopped walnuts, and bananas. I’m a huge hash fan (the corned beef hash at Woodberry Kitchen is awesome) so I requested the Gyro Hash. This came with beef and lamb gyro meat, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, Greek yogurt, mushrooms, and a fried egg. The gyro meat was awesome (I know this because I frequent Brusco, their sandwich joint next door) but the dish was a little dry. Perhaps another egg or some more yogurt would have done the trick. The Pasta and Eggs incorporated homemade pappardelle pasta (which was delicious) with a poached egg, feta, and kefalograviera cheese. When you cut into the egg, the yolk ran and made an almost creamy sauce for the pasta. It was similar to a carbonara and delicious. We all loved the Breakfast Burrito which was crumbled chicken sage sausage, eggs, feta, tomato, onion, harissa, and then drizzled
with Greek yogurt. Harissa is typically a spicy tomato based paste, but the burrito wasn’t spicy. It did have a nice kick which we really enjoyed and the Greek yogurt was a fun substitute for sour cream. Another group favorite was the Grilled Cheese. Kefalograviera cheese was between two slices of pita and then topped with arugula. The sandwich was very cheesy and I preferred the pita to traditional bread. We actually ended up ordering two of this because everyone liked it so much! The final thing we tried was the Skillet Cake which was a chocolate chip pancake with a hint of Greek coffee, then topped with butter, and drizzled with maple syrup. Cava Mezze also serves lunch and dinner, specializing in small plates and Mediterranean flavors. Some favorites include the mini pita, which are filled with flavorful chicken or gyro meat, marinated tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki sauce. The more adventurous eater can try the ouzo-scented cuttlefish with Lazaro-style herbs or the grilled octopus with capers and parsley. There are many dishes that are meant to be shared, like the 5 dip platter featuring hummus, taramosalata, roasted eggplant, tzatziki, and feta cheese with jalapenos. Spicy lamb sliders, lollipop chicken, and a housemade cheese platter if perfect for any group. Cava Mezze is located at 1302 Fleet St., in Harbor East.

You can’t make all of the right moves all of the time. While the Baltimore Orioles did pull off a steal with the Adam Jones / Chris Tillman trade for Erik Bedard several years ago, the O’s caught the short end of the stick in a trade that happened back on July 2nd, 2013. When July 2, 2013 rolled around, the Orioles were sitting pretty in second place with a 47-37 record. One player who wasn’t exactly helping their cause was starting pitcher Jake Arrieta, who by July 2nd, had accrued a record of 1-2 with a 7.23 ERA and was currently in the minors with AAA Norfolk before the Orioles decided to cut loose their former 5th round draft pick from the 2007 June Amateur Draft. Along with Arrieta went hard-throwing reliever Pedro Strop who was also having a miserable 2013 season, pitching to a similar 7.25 ERA. In return the Orioles picked up catcher Steve Clevenger and veteran pitcher Scott Feldman. While the Orioles still have Clevenger, as he is a backup to Matt Wieters, Scott Feldman only hung around with Baltimore for the latter part of the 2013 season before signing with Houston as a free agent that winter. Feldman wound up going 5-6 in 15 starts for the O’s in 2013 and posted an ERA of 4.27. Not great, but at Jake Arrieta | Photo by Keith Allison courtesy of the time it was more useful than Arrieta’s 7.23 WikiMedia Commons ERA. Things are a bit different now. Arrieta finished the 2013 season strong in their past 11 games, completely dropping Chicago, going 4-2 in nine starts with a 3.66 them out of the AL East division race and ERA and has improved every year since. In fighting to keep their hopes alive for a Wild2014, Arrieta had a great season as he went Card berth. Arrieta’s Cubs? They have a two 10-5 with a 2.53 ERA over the span of 25 game lead for the final Wild-Card spot in the starts. This year he has been out of his mind National League. It isn’t time just yet to stop and wonder as we evidenced on Sunday night as Arrieta tossed a no-hitter against the Los Angeles about what could have been had the O’s kept Dodgers, giving him win number 17 on the Arrieta. Thanks to their recent slide, they are season. Overall, he is 17-6 this year with a now 11 games out of first in the AL East and 2.11 ERA along with three complete games only three games out of last place ahead of and two shut-outs. To put things in perspective, the Boston Red Sox. If the O’s want any shot the Orioles have yet to throw a complete at all of making the postseason, they need to game this year. Oh, and Arrieta’s 17 wins hit reverse immediately and keep their foot on lead all of baseball and his 2.11 ERA is the pedal the entire rest of the season. Otherwise, Baltimore fans will be saying second only to Zack Greinke’s mark of 1.61. What makes that no-hitter even worse was goodbye to several other players as they leave the fact that the Orioles have gone 1-10 in for free agency.
