Army veteran and attorney announces run for city council

BY GIANNA DECARLO

EDITOR@BALTIMOREGUIDE.COM

On Saturday, July 18, U.S. Army veteran and attorney, Scott Goldman announced he will run for 1st District Councilman. At his kickoff event at the Admirals Fell Inn in Fells Point, Goldman, a Canton resident, said that if elected, his leadership would usher in a “New Baltimore”, a system that listens to and benefits all people. His policies are inspired by his time in the army and his knowledge of law. Goldman said the Southeast is thriving, but there are still glaring problems and inequities and that Baltimore needs competent leadership that will solve problems rather than hinder progress. “I think anybody who calls Baltimore home can tell you the same thing: that as much as we love this city, we know it can be so much more. On Monday, June 20, the South Baltimore Employment Connection Center opened its doors. The center is a way to battle unemployment and teach important job skills to those in the workforce. Those in the center will learn computer and interview skills, as well as gaining certifications and connecting with potential employers. The staff of the ECC will work with local businesses to create training programs for new employees. “There is no question that the unrest that we’ve seen in Baltimore is a question around economic instability and when we can get people into work that is how we solve the longterm problems in our city,” said Senator Bill Ferguson at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The center was funded by impact grants from the Horseshoe Casino and the Local Development Council. Funds from the casino will also provide jobs for 300 people in the mayor’s YouthWorks program and a 100 people in the summer Headstart program. For businesses, the ECC will offer outreach and recruitment, applicant pre-screening, labor market information, and assessment and testing services. The center is located in the southwest at 1410 Bush Street. The center was built near businesses like STX, a sporting goods manufacturer, because developers believe proximity to jobs was important for the center’s success. Mayor Rawlings-Blake said that her administration has created over 12,000 jobs, cutting unemployment by a third. “This progress did not occur by accident. Our city is growing because we’ve been intentional about our efforts to ensure that no one is left behind,” she said.

Banner route rises from the dead by GIANNA DECARLO EDITOR@BALTIMOREGUIDE.COM

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake reversed a decision that would have eliminated the Banner route from the Charm City Circulator. Announced in June, the initial plans had the Banner route, which travels throughout South Baltimore, eliminated starting July 20 due to lack of funding. On Monday, June 7, Rawlings-Blake said that these changes would no longer be taking place. The mayor said they will find money in the budget to make sure the Circulator remains free and that minimal changes are made. “I had this nagging feeling, knowing that the investments we had anticipated from the state weren’t going to be there. That made me redouble my efforts to take another look at the Banner route and the cuts that we had proposed in this year’s budget to the Circulator as a whole,” she said. A spokesperson for Rawlings-Blake said that $3 million worth of funding will come from setting aside debt payments and lowering the amount of money spent on new buses. The leftover will come from revenue gained from parking garages and the city’s general fund. The mayor’s office said that wait time between buses on the route would increase as a cost-prevention measure for the $11 million funding gap. “The changes won’t take place on July 20. There’s going to be a series of public meetings where we hear from the public while we still work to create efficiencies. The Circulator only works when we get it to be a fiscally sustainable model,” said Rawlings-Blake. Stops at the Green and Orange routes were expected to be cut as well, but will be reevaluated. The CCC’s most popular route, the Purple route which runs through Federal Hill and Penn Station, will be extended to 33rd street. The Charm City Circulator began in 2011, and while popular, the program has amassed a deficit, costing the city over $4 million every year. After June’s announcement, complaint came in from residents as well as councilmen and business owners who believe the Banner route to be a necessity in bringing business to the area and reducing commuting time. A letter signed featuring over a dozen signatures from community association presidents, business directors and CEOs, and more was sent to the mayor. “As residents, families, investors, and other stakeholders in South Baltimore, we are gravely concerned by the proposal to eliminate the Charm City Circulator’s Banner Route. The Banner Route is crucial for connecting city residents and tourists to the Inner Harbor,

South Baltimore businesses, sporting events, cultural attractions, and historic sites…Its loss would have a profound impact on important quality of life factors for our residents, and stands in direct opposition to the stated goal of bringing 10,000 new families into Baltimore,” it said. Councilman Eric Costello of the 11th district headed the efforts along with Council President Jack Young, leading to the June 6 meeting at Locust Point. “This announcement is the culmination of my months of efforts and tireless advocacy to Mayor Rawlings-Blake and the Administration, dating back to December 2014,” wrote Costello. “The Mayor and her administration share the same understanding that the efficiency of the Circulator System needed to be improved, and these modifications will ensure that the City continues its commitment to public transportation while being good stewards of public tax dollars.” The route goes through the Inner Harbor to Fort McHenry, from Conway St. to Pratt St. The route was initially funded by a federal grant tied to the city’s Bicentennial celebration, which has since run out. “After hearing numerous concerns from citizens, community groups and elected officials, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced on Monday, July 7, 2015 that these changes would not be implemented,” read that Circulator website. “The Banner Route will no longer be eliminated, however, there will be modifications to the service as well as reevaluation to the Green and Orange Routes.” The mayor also called for Governor Larry Hogan’s office and the Department of Transportation to examine the city’s transportation options in wake of the governor’s cancellation of the Red Line system. Anyone with comments or suggestions about the Circulator are encouraged to contact the Department of Transportation at info@ charmcitycirculator.com or through a letter at 417 E. Fayette Street, Room 559, Baltimore, MD 21202.

$30,000 raised for Canton Water Wheel The Healthy Harbor project is installing a water wheel in Canton that will remove trash from important waterways. The project is almost halfway funded. Over $30,000 was donated in July, most of which came from local businesses. Canton Car Wash and 1212 East Apartments each donated $10,000 dollars to the efforts. The biggest donation came from Baltimore Water Taxi, who contributed over $11,000. Baltimore Water Taxi held a weeklong 40th anniversary celebration where 40% of the money raised went towards the wheel. Canton Car Wash’s new location in White Marsh donated a portion of their opening day profits. “We are proud to be major donors of the Canton Water Wheel! 40% of the goal - to build the new wheel near the Boston Street Pier Park in the Baltimore Harbor - has been raised. We always #keepitclean, including the Inner Harbor,” posted Canton Car Wash on their Facebook page. With these donations, the wheel is over 40% funded at $212,810, the majority of which was raised by the Keith Campbell Foundation and the Clayton Baker Trust and Rauch Foundation. Over $7000 has been raised through individual donors. The announcement of the new wheel and the following money-raising campaign was made in June. The Canton wheel will located at the Harris Creek outfall near Boston Street Pier Park. The first water wheel is located in the Inner Harbor and collects debris though water and

solar power. The trash is then distributed to a dumpster barge, making for healthy and cleaner water ways. The harbor’s wheel has had great success. According to numbers from the Healthy Harbor Initiative, the first wheel has removed over 158 tons of trash which included 97,710 water bottles, 4.4 million cigarette butts, and over 79,000 chip bags since its installation last year. “The Inner Harbor Water Wheel is capable of removing 50,000 lbs. of trash every day. On a sunny day, the solar panels can produce 2,500 watts of electricity, enough to power a typical Maryland home,” the Healthy Harbor website says. The funding goal is currently $550,000 which is 30% less than the cost of the Inner Harbor wheel. For more information on the Canton Water Wheel or to donate, visit www.cantonwater wheel.com.

Groupon acquires Baltimore-based OrderUp OrderUp, a food delivery start-up that is based in Baltimore, was bought last week for an undisclosed sum by the online marketplace, Groupon. OrderUp will remain its own brand and continue to have its headquarters in Baltimore at the Canton Can Company where it employs over 80 locals. The acquisition is part of a larger effort called Groupon To Go, a larger online ordering platform. Groupon has 25 million clients across the country and hopes to expand their brand through a food delivery system, which has proven to be a growing and profitable industry. “Online food ordering and delivery represents an untapped opportunity for Groupon and serves as a natural extension of our local marketplace,” said Eric Lefkofky, Groupon CEO, in a press release. “The potential in delivery and takeout is apparent—especially with the growth of mobile—and OrderUp’s operational ability, coupled with Groupon’s engaged customer and

merchant base, bring tremendous scale to the space.” Launched in 2009 by two college students, OrderUp has catered to smaller, more collegeoriented areas than its competitors like GrubHub and Seamless. It has since grown to over 40 cities and has made over $10 million in investments. It has delivered over 10 million orders through its Smart phone app. “What does all of this mean? To you, the customer, it means that you’ll have an even wider range of convenient food options anytime hunger strikes, without any changes to what you’re already doing. You’ll still go to the same site (www.orderup.com), use the same app, log in with the same info and have the same amazing experience. Additionally, we’ll continue to launch OrderUp in midsize markets across the United States,” OrderUp wrote on their website. According to the post, OrderUp will be expanding to mid-sized markets, such as Cincinnati and Orlando.

New restaurants offer diverse options

Reader Appreciation Day

Southeast foodies have a lot to be excited about. This summer brings the opening of several new restaurants, all of which offer something delicious to the southeast cuisine scene. First is Hucks’ American Craft Brewer’s Hill opened earlier this month at 3728 Hudson Street, the former location of Elliot’s Pour House. Huck’s boasts that they have “the greatest of craft brews, house-concocted cocktails, and a Chef’s take on the All-American”. The menu will feature traditional food with a gourmet twist, like a Vermont grilled cheese and Maine lobster dip. It is the work of Charlie Gjerde, the brother of James Beard award winner Spike Gjerde, and his sister-in-law Carrie Podles who also owns Papi’s Tacos and Alexander’s Tavern in Fells Point.

Huck’s will offer a 100% domestic beer and wine list to pair with their American comfort food. In Canton, the former space of NcDevin’s Bar & Grill is getting new life thanks to the newly-renovated Quarterhouse Tavern which opened on July 8. Quarterhouse Tavern is offering unique options like a pickled roasted chicken and Canadian favorite, poutine with braised pork cheeks. Naturally, their summer cocktails are just as creative, and if you want something more traditional, they offer over 40 types of wine. Quarterhouse is located at 801 S. Decker Street. For a full menu and more information, visit www.quarterhousetavern.com. Also in Canton, taking the place of JD’s Smokehouse, is Jokers n’ Thieves, a “low country” restaurant which features Southern classics like shrimp and grits, pimento cheese, and smoked brisket. They also offer live music on the weekends. They are located at 3000 O’Donnell Street on the Square and more information can be found at www.jokersnthievesbaltimore.com. The final restaurant is Mayuree Thai Tavern, which has generated plenty of positive buzz since it opened in June. Traditional, flavorful thai food, like chicken satay and curry, is now being offered at this tavern in Canton at 2815 Fleet Street. For more information on Muyuree Thai Tavern, pick up the Baltimore Guide’s Reader’s Choice issue next week.

Fell’s gets chili in July The 31st Maryland State Chili Championship spiced up Fell’s Point on Saturday, June 18. The event, which benefited the Living Classrooms Foundation, brought out over 40 chili experts from all over the county to show off and compete for a spot in the national championship in October. Vendors from Texas, North Carolina, and Florida brought their unique flavors to Baltimore. The contest included 3 catagories: Traditional Red Chili, Chili Verde and Salsa. One of the only rules was that chili could not have any beans or pasta, as this distracts from the flavor. Meat can be shredded, ground, or cut into chunks and powdered seasonings are actually encouraged. Judging was taken seriously by the taste-testers. Tables full of palette cleansers and drinks were available as the contest’s organizers closely supervised. Eager participants gave out samples in plastic cups to hungry visitors while stirring large pots of fragrant meats, vegetables and fresh salsa.

Christian Parker of Virginia won the salsa category, Michael Watkins from Maryland had the best chili verde, and David Ronge of Pennsylvania took home the gold with his red chili. Along with the winners, who received $750 and a bid for the grand prize, one chili was awarded People’s Choice and a $500 prize. This is the first year the event was held in Fell’s Point. Previously, it was held in Germantown. For more information on the Maryland Chili Championship, visit www. chilimd. wordpress.com.

Through sci-fi novels and comic books local author creates fantastical world of BY GIANNA DECARLO EDITOR@BALTIMOREGUIDE.COM

Author, Matt Galeone. | Photo courtesy of Matt Galeone

Don’t you hate those mornings when you have to battle an alien empire and a genetically manipulated army all while fighting for survival in a dystopian future? For Adam Darvin, the protagonist of “The 15th Chair” a science-fiction novel and newest release by Matt Galeone, this is just another day. Darvin is just one of many characters of Galeone and his novels. Galeone lives near Patterson Park on S. Bouldin Street. Although Patterson Park isn’t much like Darvin’s horror-filled home, Galeone is a master at creating new fantasy worlds. The book’s complex characters and fastpaced stories have attracted a large audience who relate to Darvin’s struggled and victories. So much so that publisher 1st Ride Enterprises is adapting his first trilogy, “The Champion of Clarendon Ditch”, as a comic book slated for release in the fall. The original trilogy features Darvin who is both burdened and blessed with mysterious powers as he and his cobbledtogether family traverse a dangerous world. Galeone uses the books to explore the connections between good and evil through the relationships of the characters and their interactions. Darvin’s bravery mimics the stoic superheroes of the past but with a personal and human element, such as his compassion and connections towards others. Galeone was inspired by the superhero Saturday morning cartoons of his childhood and the games he would make up with his action figures. Throughout his life, writing was always something he returned to and could rely on. He worked a corporate job for a while, using it as a safety net before writing his first trilogy in 2013. “It kind of amazed me as it happened,” he said about the first time he finished a book. “To hold the pages like that, to have this moment

and go ‘this wouldn’t have existed without me’. It was unbelievable and powerful moment.” Another source of pride is the comic book, which is how Galeone always pictured the trilogy when he was writing it. For him, the book’s location and visual details will translate well to illustrations. He will have hands-on and direct involvement with the comics creation. He had always wanted to be a comic book writer so for him, his career as a writer have come full circle. His works are comparable to the The Hunger Games trilogy, he said. They mostly appeal to a young adult audience but can be enjoyed by all ages. He jokes that his 70 year old aunt became a sci-fi fan through his series. “I think a lot of science fiction can start for the young adult audiences but can appeal to older adults very easily,” he said. Much of the series’ universal appeal comes from Galeone’s fascination with the development of small, closely-knit social groups in an urban environment. The characters form these groups in order to survive, mirroring the dynamics of twenty-somethings in modern day. “It’s kind of a second coming of age, especially in Gen X/Y. There is new stage of life where you create a little family, you’re lost and trying to turn into an adult in the city. You’re on your own, but you’re not alone. This is what is being called an urban tribe.” Galeone helps his own “urban tribe” by giving back to the community. He has donated copies of his book to Friends of Patterson Park and has been a speaker at the Crossroads Homeschool Coop. “I always try to focus on local, community organizations,” he said. Galeone says that starting to write the series didn’t come easily, saying that he would slave away to bring his vision to life. However, the more he wrote and the more invested he became in the plot and characters, the easier it became. He said that as a writer, one must understand their characters and their motivations. Sincerity is needed in writing for the audience to connect. “My favorite moments when I write are the moments I didn’t plan on writing. There’s those quiet little moments between the characters that weren’t in my notes and not in my outline, but they just occurred as I wrote. Sometimes stuff kind of just comes out of you. GOLDMAN: taxes and education CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

in Afghanistan, and there through the violence and the poverty, everyday I met people with ambition and hope for their country but their government was holding them back. It pains me to think that here in Baltimore that story is all too familiar.” Goldman references a time when a water pipe near his house broke. He said he called 311 and they ignored the problem for over three months as his basement and the streets flooded. “We have to face it, our city government has become too much like that broken water pipe. We see these problems, we look at them, and the city leaders just shake their heads and drive away. I believe we can do better than that,” he said. His idea of Baltimore includes what he calls “smart development” where consideration is given to how businesses can educate, house, and transport people before breaking ground on new buildings. “Development is a means to progress.” Goldman said that developers should strive to maintain the culture and diversity of the area. He said that the Admiral Fell Inn is a good example of smart development. Also, he said creating proper green spaces should be part of the process. “I spent my entire career solving problems and getting things done and that’s why I’m running for city council, to get things done for you.” His “New Baltimore” would also increase community policing as a way to rebuild the decreasing trust between the police force and the citizens. “You can’t just fight and arrest your way out of crime. You have to build trust between the community and people,” he said, saying that the community deserves more information from police and in return will be willing to tip them off to crimes. One of his more significant platforms is lowering property taxes. “I’m a good Democrat, I don’t mind paying taxes, as long as I get what I pay for,” he said. Goldman also added that residents in the county who pay half in taxes still receive better city services. He said he would rethink taxes in a progressive way. For example, he believes in tax breaks for those in struggling neighborhoods and tax penalties for owners of vacant properties. Also, he wants to create long term mandatory tax breaks for those moving to the area. Goldman said new residents should have the comfort of knowing their costs will decrease instead of worrying if they’ll increase. Also, he wants to eliminate minor

Scott Goldman | Photo by Gianna DeCarlo privilege fees, calling them “petty.” He said that he visited local schools to figure out how to improve education in the city. Goldman said that better schools which provide greater opportunities should be a priority. He said the teachers he spoke to wanted more control over budgeting and programs, as well as community liaisons. The council needs to provide support and supervision for schools. “We need to change the government, not just the people in it. Baltimore is still strong. This city is still great. Good effective government can make us even better,” he concluded. Before Goldman took the stage, Corey Harris, who served in Afghanistan with Goldman in 2013, spoke. “It wasn’t always easy to be there as far as dealing with the Afghans, some days it was like herding cats. But Scott always remained patient and focused. If he can stay levelheaded in an environment like that, Baltimore shouldn’t be a problem,” said Harris. Also, Celia Neustadt, the founder and director of the Inner Harbor Projects voiced her support for Goldman. “One thing we’ve learned over the last couple of months is that the fate of all residents of Baltimore are intricately connected,” She said. “I have hope that Scott can affect change on this level and it’s really the first time I’ve felt this and I think it’s important for me to say this. He doesn’t pretend to know all the solutions to all the issues that plague Baltimore city, just like nobody can know all the solutions. But he’s really a student of policy and I think he’s more than a ‘capital P’ politician. Scott is going to be somebody who listens and studies Baltimore.” Goldman enters a highly-populated field of candidates for the position. The election for 1st district councilman will take place in April 2016.

BIRDS HOUSE

by Andy MindzAk

Missing pieces in the O’s line-up With the trade deadline approaching and the Baltimore Orioles sitting in second place behind the New York Yankees by four games, there are some players out there for the O’s to go after as they certainly have some needs to fill. Corner Outfielder: The Orioles haven’t had the moves of David Lough and Alejandro De Aza pay off like they thought, and Travis Snider, while serviceable, is not what you would look for out of a true corner outfielder. There have been talks about the Milwaukee Brewers’ Carlos Gomez as a possible trade option which might be a decent move. His numbers are a bit down from last year but he is still a quality player and would certainly help out. There has been quite a bit of buzz around Cincinnati’s Jay Bruce as being a possible trade option for several teams, and Baltimore might be one of those spots, although I wouldn’t mind him going somewhere else. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind a guy who has 30 HR power, but the O’s already have a guy who can hit 30 HR and strikeout 180 times a season in Chris Davis, so I don’t think

they need another player like that. Starting Pitcher: There are a few good options out there with names like Johnny Cueto, Cole Hamels, and Jeff Samardzija. The asking price for Hamels might be a bit too high so I would assume he is out of the picture. Cueto is a top notch ace and has been for a few years but his asking price could also be high. Samardzija might be the cheapest arm however his contract is up at the end of the season, so he would essentially be a rental. What makes this year’s trade deadline so tricky is that the Orioles have free agents of their own in Chris Davis, Matt Wieters and Wei-Yin Chen and two of their top young prospects in Dylan Bundy and Hunter Harvey dealing with injuries. While it would be nice to see them go after a player to help their chances of making the playoffs this year they might need to think about the future as well. This team has a good shot with the roster they have to take the AL East. Once you get to the playoffs, anything can happen, and with the AL East being a rather weak division this year, the Orioles can still get in with the hand their holding right now.
