The search for justice for Mr. Joe continues BY GIANNA DECARLO
EDITOR@BALTIMOREGUIDE.COM
Almost two months after the tragic murder of local shop owner Yogesh Sheth, or Mr. Joe, his family is still struggling and searching for answers. “Whenever something tragic happens, usually people tend to let it go and move on, but that hasn’t happened to us and the Highlandtown community,” said Raj Perekh, who is Mr. Joe’s nephew. Perekh said that Mr. Joe was beloved in the neighborhood and that his death sent shock waves of sadness throughout the community. He mentioned that his uncle’s viewing and funeral at Zannino’s Funeral Home was attended by over 600 people, all of which knew, loved, and appreciated Mr. Joe. He and his sister, Meena Saywack are hosting a rally on July 12th at 5 p.m. at the Mini Market Deli and Grocery at the 300 block of S. Highland Avenue where Mr. Joe worked and was killed. Perekh said that this CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

At his first press conference since he announced that he was diagnosed with cancer, Governor Larry Hogan divulged that he will approve the Purple Line transit lines and reject the Red Line proposal. The 16-mile Purple Line which will connect Baltimore to Washington D.C suburbs via the MARC and Amtrak commuter rail systems. Hogan believes that the Purple line will create over 23,000 jobs over the next six years. He is hoping to reduce the construction costs from the proposed $700 million to $198 million. Hogan is relying on Prince George’s and Montgomery counties to shoulder some of the costs, since they will directly benefit from the Purple Line’s construction. To also cut costs, Hogan said that cars on the Purple line will arrive every 7.5 minutes as opposed to the proposed six minutes. Hogan also announced a list of projects that he believes would improve transportation. He said he would increase spending on roads and bridges by $1.35 billion in the next few years. Some of these plans include $190 million to expand Route 404 on the Eastern shore to four lanes and $200 million for a full interchange at I-495 and I-95 at Greenbelt. Over $200 million will go to fixing structurally deficient bridges. He predicts that 2,000 miles of state roads will be resurfaced. He had said that laying asphalt and creating reliable roads is more important than creating transit lines. “The existing light rail system in Baltimore is second worst in the country as far as productivity and ridership,” Hogan said. “The current proposal makes no sense whatsoever to anyone. It doesn’t make any economic sense at all,” he said. Hogan halted the $2.9 billion Red Line, believing that it was too costly. “We are not opposed to public transportation.
We are opposed to wasteful boondoggles. The Red Line as currently proposed is not the best way to bring jobs and opportunity to the city,” he said. The Red Line would have been a 14 mile, 19 stop, transit line starting at the Woodlawn neighborhood of Baltimore County, continuing through West Baltimore, the Inner Harbor, the southeast, and ending at Johns Hopkins. Allegedly, one of Hogan’s biggest issues with the proposed Red Line was a $1 billion underground tunnel that would run through downtown Baltimore, Fell’s Point, and Harbor East. Hogan has said that he would rather put the money towards causes that are the most beneficial to Maryland residents. “We are not opposed to mass transit, but we do oppose wasteful and irresponsible spending on poorly conceived projects,” he said. Many were upset over Hogan’s decision and how his plans for improvement seemed to ignore the problems of transportation in Baltimore City. “Although the governor has promised to support economic growth in Baltimore, he canceled a project that would have expanded economic development, created thousands of jobs, increased access to thousands more, and offered residents better health care, child care and educational opportunities,” said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, who had been a supporter of the Red line. Supporters of the Red Line are calling for Hogan’s administration to offer alternatives after the denial of the Red Line. The governor invited more skepticism after his Twitter account posted a map outlining the changes that were announced. However, Baltimore City wasn’t on the map, seemingly removed. “The transit and transportation problem in Baltimore City is real, and it has severe economic impacts on our region. Our City desperately needs a reliable, comprehensive, and effective transit system. There were and still remain solutions to achieve this objective. Instead of seeking and working towards those solutions, the Hogan Administration put Baltimore City further behind with no path forward. Look no further than the map published by the Administration on Twitter. See the gaping hole? This is not a solution,” said Senator Bill Ferguson on a Facebook post. The image was later deleted and the Hogan administration offered an apology.

Updates made to Patterson Park Master Plan by GIANNA DECARLO EDITOR@BALTIMOREGUIDE.COM
Patterson Park residents gathered on Wednesday, June 24th for the second public meeting about the Patterson Park Master Plan. The first meeting, held in March 2015, had neighbors expressing their concerns over purposed changes to the park, as well as providing information on how and why they use the park. The presentation last week unveiled the changes that were made in response to this feedback. The surveys showed that the majority of park use was through the trails. Other common uses were for leisure, events and programming, and special facilities. They also demonstrated that the top priorities for users are environmental performance and maintenance and enforcement. Many gave CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

JUSTICE FOR MR. JOE: rally and petition CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
gathering should be therapeutic and help others receive closure. The deli had served Highlandtown for over 20 years. The family is selling the building later this month. They said that while it is a monument of the neighborhood, the painful memory there is too much to bear. The owner of the jewelry shop next to the Mini Market Deli is selling the building as well in light of the murder and recent robberies. “My parents own the store. My mom is the oldest of 6 and Joe was the youngest, the baby. Since his death my parents have decided to auction the store after 30 years of being a part of the Highlandtown family. My uncle’s death has touched our core and we feel lost.” Mr. Joe’s family is using the hashtag #justiceforjoe to spread the word and their cause. They hope to raise awareness since they worry that the police department is not putting all their effort into the case. Perekh says this worry is made worse when he notices the police sometimes do not return their calls. The lack of communication is limiting their knowledge of the case. While the family hopes that the rally will draw large crowds and wants their frustration to be recognized, Perekh is quick to stress that it isn’t a protest, especially in light of May’s unrest. “The one thing we want to make clear is we don’t want to make a political statement, or protest. This is really a small community coming together for a special man.” Saywack’s husband is a police officer so she personally understands the stress they’re under. Still, they want results. “I will never stop fighting for my uncle. He was the sweetest and most gentle person. I can’t believe he is gone. Until we meet again I will never stop fighting for him. Innocent, hard-working victims need a voice and support, too. Results come in numbers. So please sign my petition to get justice for him,” said Saywack on the Facebook page. Along with the rally, the family is forming a petition that would encourage the police department to pool their resources to solve the killing. “We are also urging local government leaders to support law enforcement in this difficult investigation. The detective should be given all of the necessary resources available to investigate the crime. The crime against Yogesh Sheth was heinous and the criminals should be brought to justice. Businesses play an important role in the community and they should feel safe. We must join together as a community to put a stop to fatal violence against innocent hard-working people,” it reads,
Saywack said that this cause is bigger than just her uncle. For her, it’s a way to end a system of violence that lead to such unnecessary and heart-breaking crimes. Local businesses, many of who knew Mr. Joe and were his neighbors, have supported and signed the petition. “We have to come together as a community we can’t let working people be killed in senseless crimes.” Mr. Joe was killed on May 1st after an attempted armed robbery. Police are working on the case, but it is at a standstill due to a lack of leads. However, Perekh says that the police have evidence linking the suspects to other robberies in the area. They are hopeful that they can get more evidence from the other cases. According to police, the suspects were three black males between the ages of 18 and 22 wearing dark clothing and black masks. The suspects were last seen in a white Honda Accord driving northbound on Eastern Avenue towards Baltimore Street. The car has tinted windows and damage to the passenger side of the vehicle. Anyone with information is to call the Homicide Unit at 410-396-2100. For more information on the rally and petition or updates on the case, visit the family’s Facebook page at www.facebook. com/justiceforjoe1.

“The Pillow Book” explores relationships through dreamy surrealism by GIANNA DECARLO EDITOR@BALTIMOREGUIDE.COM
“The Pillow Book” is a book by Sei Shōnagon, a court lady to the Empress Consort Teishi of Japan. The book was completed in the early 11th century and created a new genre of journaling which has since been dubbed, naturally, as a “pillow book”. A pillow book is an exhaustive documentation of sights, feelings, experiences, observations, sensations, and anything tangible that affects you. This complete awareness of the self and the senses is the inspiration behind “The Pillow Book,” a play by Maryland writer Anna Moensh, that is being performed by the Cohesion Theater Company. Director Jonas Grey describes “The Pillow Book” as “a puzzle”. It is a series of scenes that appear to be disconnected until the conclusion, when the bigger picture becomes clear. These scenes, Grey says, all focus on the possibilities and history behind the play’s central relationships. Grey said that the three primary relationships tell the story, so pay attention. “It’s important that we present the life of the couple. In the story, we present moments of the couple’s life and their past. The relationships are incredibly interwoven and deep,” said Brad Norris, the co-founder of Cohesion. “It’s not a ramshackle of scenes. When you reach the end, you really think that you’ve seen a story.” Norris encourages the audience to see the play without any preconceived notions, to witness the play unfold and then make their own decisions once they see the whole story, however fragmented it may appear . Scenes are broken up so fantastically that you cannot tell what happened first, who did it happen to and even what is a dream and what is a reality. It doesn’t help that all of the characters in “The Pillow Book” are named either Deb, Deborah, or John. Grey said that one of the biggest challenges was rehearsing the play, since it was all out of order and seemingly nonsensical. He said for the first week, the actors performed the story in a linear, traditional, way. They only began to mix it up once they understood the characters and central themes. Grey said that he wouldn’t be surprised if people see the show multiple times because they would be able to discover something new about it each time. It’s “very Momento”, he said, referencing the 2000 film where a man
with memory loss must piece together his life with small clues. “If you see this play three times, you will understand it,” he jokes. He conceptualized the play as a broken mirror, or a pane of glass that’s been shattered, breaking off into infinitesimal cracks which cannot ever been repaired. “We have worked hard to portray the premise that a single event in a person’s life can alter that person’s life dramatically”, he explained. Grey says that Moench’s language contributes to the dreamy, otherworldly quality of the play. “There is some ridiculously beautiful language in the play. There are these moments of poetry,” he said, saying that even the dialogue between characters is gorgeous while remaining realistic. Cohesion is partnering with The Strand Theatre Company, an initiative in its inaugural season that is devoted to bringing the diverse voice of female playwrights to the stage. For Norris, this collaboration is in stride with Cohesion’s mission of community and teamwork. “Working with The Strand is a true privilege and we are hopeful that this is just the beginning of a long and rewarding collaboration between our companies,” he said. The playwright, Moench, lives in Brooklyn now but is visiting Southeast to see Cohesion’s interpretation of her play in her hometown. “The Pillow Book” had only been performed one other time in New York, directed by David Chapman. Grey said that it’s fascinating how different Chapman’s interpretation is from his own. This is a testament to both the play’s vagueness and universality. Though they use the same source material, every person, director or audience, can read the experience of Deb, John, and Deborah in different, and uniquely personal, ways. Performances of “The Pillow Book” will be held at The Church on the Square at 1025 S. Potomac Avenue. Performances began on Thursday, June 25 and will run until July 12. PATTERSON PARK: updating the master plan CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3
suggestions to improve the park such as providing additional trash cans, better lighting, and more planned events. A prevailing thought was limiting automobile access to the park. In Scenario D, the Master Plan had increased vehicular access and restricted parking near the entrance at S. Linwood Avenue. This will most likely be scrapped, since one of the values of the Master plan is to have “restricted motor vehicular presence”. The final plan will have reorganized traffic routes and vehicular circulation. On the flip side, the plan will increase walking trails improve foot access since walking the trails was a main reason people visited the park. There is a brightspot for vehicle drivers, since there are talks of opening metered reverse-angle parking on the south side of E. Pratt St. and the east side of Linwood. This would open up over 30 parking spaces. Some ideas that were greatly supported were the construction of an orchard and community gardens. This is conducive with the overall goal of the Master Plan to make the park more environmentally friendly and diverse. Also, the suggestions that the Audubon Society be moved to the Casino building received a positive reaction. One topic that was hotly debated during and after the March meeting were scenarios presented that would have moved the Dominic “Mimi” DiPietro Family Skating Center to an off-site location. The reasons given were that the renovations the ice rink needed would’ve been expensive and that another location could provide better
parking. However, if the surveys have any clout, the ice rink is there to stay. Keeping it in Patterson Park received overwhelming support from many who utilized its services. Another approved idea was combining the senior center and recreation center into one building with a green roof. 69% of respondents said they have used the rec center and 65% had said that the area needed a rec center. A general theme of the plan is to renovate existing structures and utilize them for more events. Other structures will be removed to make more space. Ideas that were rejected were off-leash dog areas in the Southeast corner of the park, a playground on Ellwood Street, and a sand volleyball area. Ideas that got mixed responses were the removal of the recreation center altogether, relocation of the community garden, and a permanent band shell. Once the final plan is implemented they will develop maintenance, enforcement, and governance plans, as well as a partnership committee that will connect the community with park events and news. The larger goal is to establish a park manager and management positions to oversee park life and construction. For the future, the Master Plan committee will continue accepting the feedback. Surveys are given out at the park and through the Friends of Patterson Park. A final plan will be announced in the fall. The next public meeting will be help October 20. For more information on the meeting and the updated and future plans, visit pattersonparkmasterplan.weebly.com.

Choosing the proper window material is everything.
Even in moderate temperature swings, poor-quality vinyl windows can warp, lose whatever energy efficiency they once had, and invite drafts and leaks. Significant home improvements are supposed to last, but can you imagine the expense and frustration of replacing your windows a second time, after just a couple of years? We custom-build our windows from our own Fibrex® material. Why did we make our Fibrex® material twice as strong as vinyl? To serve homeowners who want their windows to last.*

BIRDS HOUSE
Coming close to another AL East Championship win If you’re going to end the weekend reaching first place in the AL East, the Baltimore Orioles did it in style by shutting out the Cleveland Indians in a doubleheader on Sunday, the first time in 41 years they have done that. First it was Ubaldo Jimenez’s turn as he faced off against Trevor Bauer, who has been having himself a nice 2015 so far. Jimenez did more than his part as he tossed eight scoreless innings while allowing only four hits and striking out seven as the O’s won 4-0. Jimmy Paredes hit the eventual decisive home in the third inning as he took Bauer deep for a two-run shot which turned out to be the only support Jimenez would need. Before I talk about the second game, I first should probably apologize to Ubaldo Jimenez. I mentioned earlier in the year that he was not worth his 4 year $50 million deal and all he has done so far was completely prove me wrong. This season, Jimenez is 7-3 with a 3.09 ERA and has 89 strikeouts in 87 1/3 innings pitched. What is most impressive to me has been his control this year. Over those
87 1/3 IP, Jimenez has walked only 27 batters, good for rate of 2.8 walks per 9 innings, by far his best rate and drastically improving upon his BB/9 IP of 5.5 last year. So, yeah, sorry about that Ubaldo! Chris Tillman, who has been struggling a bit this year, pitched a great game as he threw seven shutout innings and allowed only four hits while striking out six. The O’s teed off on Cleveland pitching as they hit three home runs to help back Tillman in victory. Chris Parmelee, Chris Davis and Travis Snider all homered as the O’s went on to win 8-0. Now the Orioles sit at 41-34 with a halfgame lead over the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays. If they have any shot of repeating as AL East champs, they will need to keep pitching well like they have all year. For the 2015 season the O’s own a very respectable team ERA of 3.67, good for tenth in all of baseball and 5th in the AL. We all know they can hit, but if their pitching staff keeps this up, we could have another busy October this year, and that would be just fine by me!

Water Meter Updates
New water meters and water pipes are being installed in Canton as part of a larger program to improve Baltimore’s infrastructure. The Department of Public Works’ BaltiMeter system will upgrade to wireless water meters for more precise readings. Some received notices in the mail informing them of the installation. This is a relief to many who have been overcharged on their water bill due to faulty meters. The meters are being currently being installed in various streets, including O’Donnell Street and the 800 block of Eastern Avenue. Another plan is to rebuild the city’s aging piping system as part of the infrastructure improvement. Even after the upgrades, some on the affected blocks are still experiencing problems with flooding and brown water. For any related issues, residents are encouraged to call 311.
