Thursday, November 28 The Film Festival Programmers Talks During the past decade the role of film festivals has changed drastically from showcases of national cinema, to sites of international business in production, sales and development of new talents and film. Combined with the increasing stress on demand of world premieres in key festivals, the changes have also tremendously impacted not only the programming decisions, but also the whole production and distribution cycle influencing the film sector as a whole from producers to the sales agents and festivals as well. The pioneering Film Festival Programmers School will bring to Tallinn the representatives of both key and specialised film festivals in the world - Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Pusan, Sitges, Puchon, Karlovy Vary and Nippon Connection to discuss the most pressing issues in the festival cycle landscape and to provide attending filmmakers the possibility to meet and network with the programmers for future collaboration. The workshop hits the spot by following the debate on preserving the voice of smaller films within megafestivals by the Chief Editor of Screen International, Wendy Mitchell, in Autumn 2013. The topics include: • programming politics in the increasing competition for premieres • how to achieve a balanced distribution of films across the festival calendar • keeping the identity and focus of sidebars within a bigger festival landscape • the relationship and possibilities for specialized genre and niche festivals • how much is enough for a festival to be a festival? • how to communicate smaller films in the programme of “megafestivals”. Talk #1: Programming politics in the age of competition for premieres 10:00 - 11:15 A Nordic Hotel Forum, room Sirius Panelists: Paolo Bertolin (Venice Film Festival & DohaFilmInstitute), Chanil Jeon (Busan Film Festival), Lenka Tyrpakova (Karlovy Vary Film
