Anne Dickey This year, Albuquerque and the Balloon Fiesta lost one of its last grand surviving matriarchs, with the death at age 90 of Anne Dickey. Anne was a fixture at Balloon Fiesta from almost the very beginning. She volunteered as a crew person at the 1973 World Championships (the second Balloon Fiesta), bringing her family along for the fun. She served on the Balloon Fiesta Board of Directors in 1980 and 1981. Two of Anne’s sons, Bill and Frank, became pilots and still fly in the Balloon Fiesta; Frank Dickey was the 2009 Balloon Fiesta champion. Even though she was in ill health, in 2015 she was still on the launch field to support Frank and Bill and her other two children, 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, and her many ballooning friends. With her great friend Evelyn Byrd, who left us a few years ago, Anne was one of those people who stayed out of the limelight and quietly did the zillion little, thankless things that keeps a community and an event together and functioning. For many years Ann and Evelyn edited the local balloon club newsletter, helped out at countless ballooning functions within and outside Balloon Fiesta, and cooked enough food to feed an army of hungry tailgaters. In 2001, Anne and Evelyn were jointly recognized with the Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association Sid Cutter Award for service to ballooning. Her devotion, her kindness, and her no-nonsense good sense are much missed by all who knew her.
